Earnings are upon us. Unlike last year, when investors were monitoring the extent of the COVID-19 pandemic and the benefits of a vaccine, this quarter is all about big picture macroeconomic factors. Inflation, interest rates, supply chain challenges, and labor shortages headline this quarter's list of important themes. Although these topics have their relevance over the short term, they shouldn't detract from a company's long-term growth trajectory.
\n
With that, we asked some of Fool.com contributors which growth stocks were great buys now. They reached into their goody bags and pulled out three treats. Here's what makes Fisker (NYSE:FSR), United Parcel Service (NYSE:UPS), and Emerson Electric (NYSE:EMR) all great buys now.
\n
\n
An EV stock to park in your portfolio
\n
Scott Levine (Fisker): Revving up to present its third-quarter earnings report on Nov. 3, Fisker is an electric vehicle company that is a fairly new option for investors, having made its market debut almost exactly one year ago. Those who follow the EV industry closely will surely recognize the company's name; however, it's also likely that many investors are unfamiliar with the EV start-up considering the flurry of EV companies that have gone public through special purpose acquisition company deals recently. Add to this the fact that Fisker doesn't have any vehicles on the road yet, and it's probable that Fisker is not on many growth investors' radars. But it certainly should be. Between the company's disruptive approach to financing and the stock trading at around $14 -- 55% below its 52-week high -- it certainly warrants consideration.
\n
One of the biggest challenges facing EV makers is the hesitancy that prospective customers have regarding charging their vehicles. Helping to allay these concerns, Fisker offers customers who find that they're not as charged up about going electric as they thought they'd be the option to return leased vehicles at any time without penalty. Management's willingness to implement an innovative approach to vehicle leasing suggests that it's not only cognizant of a potential roadblock to its success, but that it's not willing to yield to convention.
\n
As of early August, Fisker has 17,500 reservations for its Ocean SUV, indicating that there's already interest in the company's offering. By 2025, management is targeting annual sales of 200,000 to 250,000 -- a year in which it expects to expand its product offerings to four vehicles and which it expects to recognize a sizable improvement in its financials. While the company expects to generate free cash flow of negative $300 million in 2022, it forecasts free cash flow of $1.9 billion in 2025. That's the type of growth that can electrify investors' excitement.
\n
UPS has long-term upside but may face near-term setbacks
\n
Daniel Foelber (United Parcel Service): America's largest package delivery company, UPS, reports Q3 earnings on Tuesday. In addition to watching the usual suspects like the top and bottom line, margins, and other financial figures, investors will likely have their eyes peeled and their ears perked to gain insight into management's thoughts on supply chain constraints and the labor shortage.
\n
Investors following the package delivery space know that FedEx and UPS report earnings about six weeks apart instead of at the same time. This staggered schedule is convenient because it provides more frequent insight into industrywide headwinds and tailwinds.
\n
FedEx's most recent earnings report illustrated the sheer magnitude that the tight labor market and challenging supply chain are having on its margins. Its quarter wasn't pretty, and FedEx stock fell hard, dragging down UPS with it. To combat inflation, FedEx is raising prices next year. Investors should listen to UPS management's commentary on these topics to see how it expects to navigate market challenges, and the extent that it, too, will raise prices (if at all).
\n
In addition to these short-term talking points, growth investors will likely monitor UPS' e-commerce growth, rebound in business-to-business sales, and international performance. UPS is a value stock that has been transforming into a growth stock over the last few years because it's leaned into previously untapped markets. Its investments to grow its e-commerce offering have made it a preferred shipping and logistics partner for small and medium-sized businesses.
\n
Investors should gird their loins if UPS expects a sizable impact to its short-term performance due to macroeconomic factors. But as long as the big picture remains intact, UPS is one of the best industrial stocks on the market today.
\n
Emerson Electric is about to enter a growth phase
\n
Lee Samaha (Emerson Electric): It's been a long time coming, but energy-related spending is making a comeback. That's great news for companies with substantive process automation businesses like Emerson Electric. In total, oil and gas make up around 19% of Emerson's sales with chemicals and refining contributing another 11% and 6%.
\n
Process automation is the processing of raw materials into an initial product. As a result, spending in the industry tends to be lumpy and contingent on customers feeling confident in the long-term outlook for their end markets. As such, the COVID-19 pandemic caused a stalling of investment within the processing industry.
\n
However, oil services companies like Halliburton are talking about an extended upcycle in oil and gas spending. Meanwhile, Emerson's process automation rival Honeywell International noted that its refining catalyst and absorbents orders surged by 30% in the second quarter. That's important because it suggests refining investment is coming back, and as Honeywell's management noted, that usually flows through into increased spending in process automation down the line.
\n
Everything points to a cyclical recovery in Emerson's process automation. Meanwhile, the company's commercial and residential solutions segment's (climate technology, energy efficiency, refrigeration) orders were up a whopping 43% in the trailing three months to June, so future revenue growth is assured. And finally, the recent deal to take a 55% stake in industrial software company Aspen Technology adds another string to the bow of Emerson's software expansion strategy. All told, Emerson looks well set for growth in the coming years.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Earnings Season Is Here! 3 Great Growth Stocks to Buy Now
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nEarnings Season Is Here! 3 Great Growth Stocks to Buy Now\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-10-25 09:10 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
It's that time of year again! That's the type of growth that can electrify investors' excitement.\nUPS has long-term upside but may face near-term setbacks\nDaniel Foelber (United Parcel Service): America's largest package delivery company, UPS, reports Q3 earnings on Tuesday. In addition to watching the usual suspects like the top and bottom line, margins, and other financial figures, investors will likely have their eyes peeled and their ears perked to gain insight into management's thoughts on supply chain constraints and the labor shortage.\nInvestors following the package delivery space know that FedEx and UPS report earnings about six weeks apart instead of at the same time. This staggered schedule is convenient because it provides more frequent insight into industrywide headwinds and tailwinds.\nFedEx's most recent earnings report illustrated the sheer magnitude that the tight labor market and challenging supply chain are having on its margins. Its quarter wasn't pretty, and FedEx stock fell hard, dragging down UPS with it. To combat inflation, FedEx is raising prices next year. Investors should listen to UPS management's commentary on these topics to see how it expects to navigate market challenges, and the extent that it, too, will raise prices (if at all).\nIn addition to these short-term talking points, growth investors will likely monitor UPS' e-commerce growth, rebound in business-to-business sales, and international performance. UPS is a value stock that has been transforming into a growth stock over the last few years because it's leaned into previously untapped markets. Its investments to grow its e-commerce offering have made it a preferred shipping and logistics partner for small and medium-sized businesses.\nInvestors should gird their loins if UPS expects a sizable impact to its short-term performance due to macroeconomic factors. But as long as the big picture remains intact, UPS is one of the best industrial stocks on the market today.\nEmerson Electric is about to enter a growth phase\nLee Samaha (Emerson Electric): It's been a long time coming, but energy-related spending is making a comeback. That's great news for companies with substantive process automation businesses like Emerson Electric. In total, oil and gas make up around 19% of Emerson's sales with chemicals and refining contributing another 11% and 6%.\nProcess automation is the processing of raw materials into an initial product. As a result, spending in the industry tends to be lumpy and contingent on customers feeling confident in the long-term outlook for their end markets. As such, the COVID-19 pandemic caused a stalling of investment within the processing industry.\nHowever, oil services companies like Halliburton are talking about an extended upcycle in oil and gas spending. Meanwhile, Emerson's process automation rival Honeywell International noted that its refining catalyst and absorbents orders surged by 30% in the second quarter. That's important because it suggests refining investment is coming back, and as Honeywell's management noted, that usually flows through into increased spending in process automation down the line.\nEverything points to a cyclical recovery in Emerson's process automation. All told, Emerson looks well set for growth in the coming years.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":487,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":858517301,"gmtCreate":1635081923386,"gmtModify":1635081924155,"author":{"id":"4087911896933810","authorId":"4087911896933810","name":"Pei_jie","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b373728bbc2a67fa3c6e741ae5b9caae","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false},"themes":[],"htmlText":"wow","listText":"wow","text":"wow","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/858517301","repostId":"858240774","repostType":1,"repost":{"id":858240774,"gmtCreate":1635065710519,"gmtModify":1635065710785,"author":{"id":"3576799808429265","authorId":"3576799808429265","name":"mina6","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/01a65d46516f8333de1f63757e2c2314","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$微软(MSFT)$好","listText":"$微软(MSFT)$好","text":"$微软(MSFT)$好","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8bf79fd6fc0e27f902e741c0fb332951","width":"1080","height":"1920"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/858240774","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":0,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":475,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":824326434,"gmtCreate":1634282244693,"gmtModify":1634282244931,"author":{"id":"4087911896933810","authorId":"4087911896933810","name":"Pei_jie","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b373728bbc2a67fa3c6e741ae5b9caae","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Yes.. class=\"t-img-caption\">Courtesy Everett Collection
\n
The Nasdaq-100 Index has performed very well against the broader S&P 500 index in recent years and it is down only 6% from its record intraday high set on Sept. 7. Even so, more than a quarter of stocks in the Nasdaq-100 are in bear markets -- down at least 20% from their 52-week highs.
\n
Before looking at those stocks, let's take a quick look at the Nasdaq-100 Index . It is made up of the largest 100 non-financial stocks in the full Nasdaq Composite Index and is weighted by market capitalization. The Nasdaq-100 has greatly outperformed the S&P 500 index (which is also weighted by market cap) in recent years.
\n
Using exchange-traded funds that track both -- the Invesco QQQ Trust for the Nasdaq-100 and the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust, here is a 10-year chart showing total returns, with dividends reinvested:
\n
FactSet
\n
One reason for QQQ's outperformance over the past 10 years has been its heavy concentration in giant tech companies. As of the close on Sept. 27, the top five companies held by QQQ (Apple Inc., Microsoft Corp., Amazon.com Inc., Tesla Inc. and two common-share classes of Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL)) made up 41.3% of the portfolio. Meanwhile the top five positions of SPY (the same, except replace Tesla with Facebook Inc. (FB)) made up 22.6% of its portfolio.
\n
Another important difference between the indexes is the Nasdaq-100 includes American depositary receipts of some non-U.S. companies, while the S&P 500 excludes ADRs. Even so, more than a quarter of stocks in the Nasdaq-100 are in bear markets -- down at least 20% from their 52-week highs.\nBefore looking at those stocks, let's take a quick look at the Nasdaq-100 Index . It is made up of the largest 100 non-financial stocks in the full Nasdaq Composite Index and is weighted by market capitalization. The Nasdaq-100 has greatly outperformed the S&P 500 index (which is also weighted by market cap) in recent years.\nUsing exchange-traded funds that track both -- the Invesco QQQ Trust for the Nasdaq-100 and the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust, here is a 10-year chart showing total returns, with dividends reinvested:\nFactSet\nOne reason for QQQ's outperformance over the past 10 years has been its heavy concentration in giant tech companies. (FB)) made up 22.6% of its portfolio.\nAnother important difference between the indexes is the Nasdaq-100 includes American depositary receipts of some non-U.S. companies, while the S&P 500 excludes ADRs. Some of the ADRs held by QQQ are included in the list below.\nHere's a comparison of average annual returns for the two ETFs over many periods:\nSource: FactSet\n\n\n\n\n\nOne thing to keep an eye on is the relative cost of the indexes/ETFs. QQQ looks a bit expensive relative to where it usually trades against SPY. Here's a comparison of current forward price-to-earnings ratios with averages:\nSource: FactSet\n\n\n\n\n\nSo QQQ now trades for 129% of SPY's forward P/E valuation. It has traded for 118% of SPY's forward P/E on average over 10 years and 123% based on the 15-year averages.\nThe Nasdaq-100 bear list\nThere are actually 102 stocks in the Nasdaq-100 because Alphabet and Fox Corp. have two common-share classes apiece. But with significant increases recently in the cost of labor and materials, you can expect upward price pressure for a while. Combine that with low interest rates, and you are losing buying power unless your investments grow quickly enough to stay ahead of inflation.
\n
Read:U.S. wholesale prices surge again and show inflation still rampant, PPI finds
\n
So defensive stocks are worth thinking about. One way to have built-in protection from inflation is with real-estate investment trusts. Greg Kuhl, co-manager of the Janus Henderson Global Real Estate Fund , named three areas within the real-estate sector he believes are especially appropriate right now.
\n
The Janus Henderson Global Real Estate Fund is rated five stars (the highest ranking) by Morningstar, within the investment data firm's Global Real Estate mutual fund category. It generally holds between 50 and 60 stocks. (Kuhl also co-manages the Janus Henderson U.S. Real Estate ETF (JRE), which was established in June to follow a similar strategy, limited to 20 domestic stocks.)
\n
The case for REITs
\n
During an interview, Kuhl, who is based in Chicago, said investors who allocate some of their money to real estate benefit from \"dividends, diversification and defensive growth.\"
\n
Real-estate investment trusts in the U.S. are generally set up to be income-producing investments, but the Janus Henderson Global Real Estate Fund's strategy is to maximize total return over the long term. (If you are interested in high current income from the real-estate sector, this article includes a list of REIT stocks with high yields that are well-supported by cash flow.)
\n
The fund's quoted 30-day SEC yield was 1.42% as of July 31. That is low, but it is in line with the weighted dividend yield of 1.36% for the S&P 500 , according to FactSet, and a yield of 1.24% for 10-year U.S. Treasury notes .
\n
The Janus Henderson Global Real Estate Fund's annual expenses are 1.03% of assets under management, while the new Janus Henderson U.S. Real Estate ETF's expense ratio is 0.65%.
\n
The fund has outperformed its Morningstar category and the S&P 500 real-estate industry group by wide margins. But it has underperformed the S&P 500. Here's a comparison of average returns for the fund, its Morningstar category, the S&P 500 REIT industry group and the SPDR S&P 500 ETF $(SPY.AU)$:
\n
\n
\n
\n

\n
Average return -- 3 years
\n
Average return -- 5 years
\n
Average return -- 10 years
\n
\n
\n
Janus Henderson Global Real Estate Fund -- I Shares
\n
13.4%
\n
11.2%
\n
11.2%
\n
\n
\n
Morningstar Global Real Estate category
\n
8.5%
\n
6.5%
\n
8.2%
\n
\n
\n
S&P 500 real-estate industry group
\n
11.8%
\n
7.5%
\n
9.6%
\n
\n
\n
SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust
\n
17.7%
\n
17.2%
\n
16.9%
\n
\n
\n
Sources: Morningstar, FactSet
\n

\n

\n

\n
\n
\n
\n
For diversification, weighting some of your portfolio toward REITs can move you a bit away from the tech-related concentration of an S&P 500 index fund that is weighted by market capitalization. Looking at the SPDR S&P 500 ETF, the five largest holdings (Apple Inc. $(AAPL)$, Microsoft Corp. $(MSFT)$, Amazon.com Inc. $(AMZN)$, Facebook Inc. (FB) and Alphabet Inc. $(GOOGL)$(GOOGL)) together comprise 22% of the portfolio.
\n
The real-estate sector makes up only 2.6% of the S&P 500's market capitalization, according to FactSet. So exposure to REITs reduces concentration risk, and a global approach goes even further, because different markets go through different cycles.
\n
Defensive growth may be the most attractive attribute of the REIT space. \"You will not get tech-stock-growth from these companies,\" Kuhl said. \"What you should expect from real estate is mid-to-high single-digit earnings growth, driven by contractual rent increases in the leases -- inflation or better.\"
\n
So tenants tend to pay more each year. Then there is an added bonus for landlords in a market such as this one. \"You get mark-to-market,\" Kuhl said, \"if a lease ends and the owner has pricing power, the new lease might be 15% to 20% higher. There is quite a bit of growth there. \"
\n
REITs can also boost growth by acquiring and developing land.
\n
Three REIT types for inflationary times
\n
Kuhl pointed to three REIT subsectors that are attractive now for \"nice returns with lower volatility\" and gave one stock as an example for each.
\n
Industrial logistics
\n
This category includes warehouses and sorting facilities used by retailers and transportation companies. Prologis Inc. $(PLD)$ is the largest holding of the Janus Henderson Global Real Estate Fund and the Janus Henderson U.S. Real Estate ETF.
\n
Prologis owns logistics facilities in 19 countries. The company ranked high in this quality scoring of REITs based on a framework provided by Frank Haggerty, a senior portfolio manager at Duff & Phelps Investment Management in Chicago.
\n
Single-family rental
\n
The COVID-19 crisis has fed demand for housing as some people have moved away from big cities. But household formation has also been a long-term driver of demand as construction in the U.S. hasn't kept pace.
\n
Kuhl said that years ago, the idea of a national company handling single-family rentals, including leasing homes, showing them to potential renters and maintaining them, was treated with skepticism by some professional investors. But Invitation Homes Inc. (INVH) has \"done a great job operationally,\" he said, adding that it seeks to cater to younger families by owning and renting out houses in highly rated school districts.
\n
Specialty residential
\n
This category includes companies that operate manufactured housing communities. These aren't mobile homes but rather permanent structures built at relatively low cost. Most of the communities are age-restricted and in areas that are desirable to younger retirees, such as Florida, Arizona and California.
\n
The residents own their homes, but not the land under them. They pay a monthly fee that includes rent for the land as well as well as maintenance and other services. The contracts have built-in inflation protection for the operators.
\n
\"These are high-quality communities with lots of amenities,\" Kuhl said. \"People are there for the atmosphere and socialization.\"
\n
He named Sun Communities Inc. (SUI) as an example of a specialty residential operator that has purchased many communities and expanded them. \"They have done really well using excess land to build out new street grids, infrastructure and new amenities,\" he said. This is the third-largest holding of the Janus Henderson Global Real Estate Fund.
\n
Largest holdings
\n
Here's a list of the 10 largest holdings of the Janus Henderson Global Real Estate Fund as of July 31, plus Invitation Homes, a large holding but outside the largest 10:
\n
\n
\n
\n
Company
\n
Total return -- 2021
\n
Total Return -- 5 Years
\n
Share \"buy\" ratings
\n
Closing price -- Aug. 18
\n
Consensus price target
\n
implied 12-month upside potential
\n
Dividend Yield
\n
\n
\n
Prologis Inc. But with significant increases recently in the cost of labor and materials, you can expect upward price pressure for a while. Combine that with low interest rates, and you are losing buying power unless your investments grow quickly enough to stay ahead of inflation.\nRead:U.S. wholesale prices surge again and show inflation still rampant, PPI finds\nSo defensive stocks are worth thinking about. One way to have built-in protection from inflation is with real-estate investment trusts. Greg Kuhl, co-manager of the Janus Henderson Global Real Estate Fund , named three areas within the real-estate sector he believes are especially appropriate right now.\nThe Janus Henderson Global Real Estate Fund is rated five stars (the highest ranking) by Morningstar, within the investment data firm's Global Real Estate mutual fund category. It generally holds between 50 and 60 stocks. (Kuhl also co-manages the Janus Henderson U.S. Real Estate ETF (JRE), which was established in June to follow a similar strategy, limited to 20 domestic stocks.)\nThe case for REITs\nDuring an interview, Kuhl, who is based in Chicago, said investors who allocate some of their money to real estate benefit from \"dividends, diversification and defensive growth.\"\nReal-estate investment trusts in the U.S. are generally set up to be income-producing investments, but the Janus Henderson Global Real Estate Fund's strategy is to maximize total return over the long term. (If you are interested in high current income from the real-estate sector, this article includes a list of REIT stocks with high yields that are well-supported by cash flow.)\nThe fund's quoted 30-day SEC yield was 1.42% as of July 31. Including year-to-date gains, we're talking about an increase of approximately 3,300,000%! Riding Buffett's coattails has long been a profitable venture.
\n
As we push into the fourth quarter, five Warren Buffett stocks look particularly attractive and can confidently be bought hand over fist by investors.
\n

\n
Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett. Image source: The Motley Fool.
\n
General Motors
\n
One of the best deals long-term investors are going to find in Berkshire Hathaway's portfolio at the moment is auto stock General Motors (NYSE:GM).
\n
Like most automakers, GM has had to contend with two big hurdles over the past 18 months. First, the pandemic caused consumers to scale back on major purchases, which reduced short-term auto sales at the dealership level. And second, supply chain issues in the wake of the pandemic have caused GM and other automakers to lower or halt production on certain models. While these concerns are tangible, they're not a long-term worry. This means whatever short-term pain General Motors is experiencing is an opportunity for patient investors to pounce.
\n
The real excitement for GM has to do with the electrification of consumer and enterprise auto fleets. In an effort to combat climate change, we're liable to see a multi-decade vehicle replacement cycle that almost exclusively emphasizes electric-powered vehicles. For its part, General Motors is investing $35 billion in electric vehicle (EVs), autonomous vehicle, and battery research through 2025. By mid-decade, the company expects to have launched 30 new EVs globally.
\n
While General Motors has long been a key player in its home market, the U.S., it's no slouch in the world's biggest auto market, either. GM is on pace to sell about 3 million vehicles in China this year (based on sales through the first six months), and has the deep pockets and infrastructure capable of gobbling up EV market share in the world's second-largest economy by gross domestic product.
\n
Long story short, a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 8 no longer makes sense for a company whose growth rate could sustainably pick up for decades.
\n

\n
\n
Bristol Myers Squibb
\n
Value stocks have always been a big theme for Warren Buffett, and that's exactly what investors are going to get with pharmaceutical stock Bristol Myers Squibb (NYSE:BMY).
\n
Like most healthcare stocks, Bristol Myers' products are highly defensive. This is to say that a stock market decline or even an economic contraction won't adversely affect demand for its pharmaceuticals. Since we don't get to choose when we get sick or what ailment(s) we develop, drugmakers like Bristol Myers usually offer highly predictable cash flow.
\n
One company-specific reason investors can buy this Warren Buffett stock hand over fist for the fourth quarter is its organic growth opportunity. Eliquis, which was developed with Pfizer, has become the most-popular oral anticoagulant in the world and should bring in more than $10 billion in sales for Bristol Myers Squibb this year. There's also cancer immunotherapy Opdivo, which I believe offers even more long-term opportunity. Although Opdivo flamed out in advanced lung cancer trials a few years back, it's being examined in dozens of clinical trials and has a very good chance to generate billions in added annual revenue via label expansion opportunities.
\n
Bristol Myers' acquisition of cancer and immunology drugmaker Celgene in late 2019 gets high marks, too. Buying Celgene brought multiple myeloma drug Revlimid into Bristol's portfolio. Revlimid brought in over $12 billion in sales last year, and has a track record of maintaining double-digit annual sales growth. This key therapy is protected from an onslaught of generic competition until the end of January 2026.
\n
There aren't many better values right now than Bristol Myers Squibb at less than 8 times Wall Street's forward-year earnings forecast.
\n

\n
\n
Teva Pharmaceutical Industries
\n
In terms of valuation, no Warren Buffett stock is cheaper than brand-name and generic-drug company Teva Pharmaceutical Industries (NYSE:TEVA). Including year-to-date gains, we're talking about an increase of approximately 3,300,000%! Riding Buffett's coattails has long been a profitable venture.\nAs we push into the fourth quarter, five Warren Buffett stocks look particularly attractive and can confidently be bought hand over fist by investors.\n\nBerkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett. Image source: The Motley Fool.\nGeneral Motors\nOne of the best deals long-term investors are going to find in Berkshire Hathaway's portfolio at the moment is auto stock General Motors (NYSE:GM).\nLike most automakers, GM has had to contend with two big hurdles over the past 18 months. This means whatever short-term pain General Motors is experiencing is an opportunity for patient investors to pounce.\nThe real excitement for GM has to do with the electrification of consumer and enterprise auto fleets. By mid-decade, the company expects to have launched 30 new EVs globally.\nWhile General Motors has long been a key player in its home market, the U.S., it's no slouch in the world's biggest auto market, either. GM is on pace to sell about 3 million vehicles in China this year (based on sales through the first six months), and has the deep pockets and infrastructure capable of gobbling up EV market share in the world's second-largest economy by gross domestic product.\nLong story short, a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 8 no longer makes sense for a company whose growth rate could sustainably pick up for decades.\n\nImage source: Getty Images.\nBristol Myers Squibb\nValue stocks have always been a big theme for Warren Buffett, and that's exactly what investors are going to get with pharmaceutical stock Bristol Myers Squibb (NYSE:BMY).\nLike most healthcare stocks, Bristol Myers' products are highly defensive. This is to say that a stock market decline or even an economic contraction won't adversely affect demand for its pharmaceuticals. Since we don't get to choose when we get sick or what ailment(s) we develop, drugmakers like Bristol Myers usually offer highly predictable cash flow.\nOne company-specific reason investors can buy this Warren Buffett stock hand over fist for the fourth quarter is its organic growth opportunity. Although Opdivo flamed out in advanced lung cancer trials a few years back, it's being examined in dozens of clinical trials and has a very good chance to generate billions in added annual revenue via label expansion opportunities.\nBristol Myers' acquisition of cancer and immunology drugmaker Celgene in late 2019 gets high marks, too. Buying Celgene brought multiple myeloma drug Revlimid into Bristol's portfolio. Revlimid brought in over $12 billion in sales last year, and has a track record of maintaining double-digit annual sales growth. This key therapy is protected from an onslaught of generic competition until the end of January 2026.\nThere aren't many better values right now than Bristol Myers Squibb at less than 8 times Wall Street's forward-year earnings forecast.\n\nImage source: Getty Images.\nTeva Pharmaceutical Industries\nIn terms of valuation, no Warren Buffett stock is cheaper than brand-name and generic-drug company Teva Pharmaceutical Industries (NYSE:TEVA). Shares of the company can be scooped up by investors right now for under 4 times forecasted earnings per share in 2021.\nHow does a profitable company in a defensive sector get pushed to such a low multiple? The truth is Teva has had a lot of things go wrong over the past five years. It overpaid for generic-drug company Actavis, which ballooned its debt, and it's found itself in the crosshairs of litigation on more than one occasion. In fact, most U.S. states are litigating against Teva regarding its role in opioid crisis. The uncertainty surrounding these cases is primarily responsible for keeping Teva's valuation in check.\nThankfully, Teva has a secret weapon: CEO Kare Schultz. Schultz was hired in late 2017 as a turnaround specialist, and through nearly four years with the company he's worked wonders. Considering Teva's debt position, Schultz is angling to offer free or discounted products, rather than pay cash. With most other drugmakers settling their opioid lawsuits, it seems to be just a matter of time before this gray cloud clears up and Teva returns to a fair valuation multiple.\n\nImage source: Getty Images.\nVisa and Mastercard\nThe final two Warren Buffett stocks to buy hand over fist for the fourth quarter are being lumped together for good reason: They're chief competitors and two of the most dominant companies in the payment-processing landscape, Visa (NYSE:V) and Mastercard (NYSE:MA).\nThe reason Visa and Mastercard have performed so well for so long is because they're cyclically tied companies. Although economic contractions and recessions are inevitable, they usually only last for a few months to a couple of quarters. Comparatively, periods of economic expansion last years. Payment processors Visa and Mastercard are simply benefiting from these disproportionately longer periods of expansion.\nThis dynamic duo also outperforms because they strictly stick to payment processing and aren't direct lenders. At the very least, it could improve studios' negotiation power over revenue split and other terms against AMC.\nAs AMC battles to bounce back from lost revenue during the pandemic, news like this from Disney will not help.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":170,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":824326434,"gmtCreate":1634282244693,"gmtModify":1634282244931,"author":{"id":"4087911896933810","authorId":"4087911896933810","name":"Pei_jie","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b373728bbc2a67fa3c6e741ae5b9caae","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Yes.. For example, should you buy individual stocks or funds that hold many companies? While exchange-traded funds and mutual funds should probably form at least part of your portfolio, they may not quite provide the same excitement as finding a company you believe in and putting skin in the game. But buying individual stocks means taking on more risk than with diversified funds. If you're wondering what the best stocks for beginners are, take a look at larger companies with long track records, solid fundamentals and strong balance sheets. You should pay attention to valuation metrics, such as a company's price-earnings ratio, but sometimes stocks are expensive for a reason. Here are nine stocks to consider for a starter portfolio.
\n
Lowe's Companies Inc. (LOW)
\n
Housing market fundamentals have been a shorter-term tailwind for Lowe's, but Dan Eye, chief investment officer at Fort Pitt Capital Group, says there's more to the story that makes the company a good longer-term play. The company is executing a turnaround strategy to become a better retailer. \"Their strategy is working, and Lowe's is showing success in improving operations, increasing profitability, upgrading their online infrastructure and utilizing their labor force more efficiently,\" Eye says. The company is narrowing its operational performance gaps with rival Home Depot Inc. (HD) and offers a relative valuation discount that is an attractive entry point for Lowe's, he says. Additionally, the many aging homes in the U.S. will likely need more upgrades and repairs, he says.
\n
Lincoln National Corp. (LNC)
\n
In the insurance space, there are few companies as venerable as Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (BRK.B,BRK.A). But it also owns a multitude of other businesses, and Chuck Lieberman, chief investment officer at Advisors Capital Management, says its conglomerate nature may be holding its share price back more than if it were broken into parts. Also, Warren Buffett's eventual departure is a risk, he says. \"Personally, I'd rather own Lincoln Financial, another household name in life insurance and annuities, which is much cheaper, very nicely profitable, has a good dividend, and which still buys back lots of shares,\" he says. The holding company provides financial advice and retirement plan services in addition to annuities and life insurance.
\n
Johnson & Johnson (JNJ)
\n
For relatively safe beginner stock picks, Robert Johnson, finance professor at Creighton University, recommends picking ones that have increased their dividends for many consecutive years. \"Some refer to these as 'ruler stocks' because if you laid down a ruler on a graph of dividends over time, the ruler would point to the northeast and most of the points would be very close to the ruler,\" he says. One company with a strong dividend track record is Johnson & Johnson. As a company that produces consumer staples, it's considered a defensive play because it tends to do better than other types of investments during an economic downturn. Of course, that also means it can lag other stocks when the economy is doing better. But for a stable source of income year in and year out, you could do a lot worse.
\n
Alexandria Real Estate Equities (ARE)
\n
Depending on their age, beginner investors may have more risk tolerance than those closer to retirement. That doesn't mean you should put all your money in cryptocurrencies, but it does mean that not every single company in your portfolio necessarily has to be a household name. Peter Zabierek, CEO of Sugi Capital Management, recommends looking for stocks with less correlation than some of the megacap equities that are in the same indexes and exposed to the same risks. Alexandria Real Estate Equities falls into that category, he says. Additionally, this real estate investment trust that provides lab space for rent to biotech companies has strong long-term demand drivers, he says. \"Pandemic or no, funding has soared to the biotech arena,\" he says. \"While you might have trouble offering the unicorns Series A funding, you can invest in their landlord. Great management team, solid balance sheet and a 2.3% dividend yield. I love it.\"
\n
JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM)
\n
As the economy improves, the Federal Reserve is likely to start tapering its bond purchases, which will push interest rates higher even before the central bank actually raises its key policy rate. Long-term interest rates tend to rise faster than short-term ones. That means banks will be able to earn more interest on long-term loans than they have to pay out in short-term rates on savings accounts and certificates of deposit. Within this positive outlook, three experts pointed to JPMorgan Chase as a solid long-term holding. Vinny Yu, co-founder of Javlin Invest, says the bank offers higher returns and lower volatility than competitor Wells Fargo & Co. (WFC).
\n
UnitedHealth Group Inc. (UNH)
\n
With health carespending making up around 18% of U.S. gross domestic product, it might be wise to have some exposure to the industry in a starter portfolio. Loreen Gilbert, CEO of WealthWise Financial Services, points to UnitedHealth Group, one of the biggest health care companies in the world. The company, which provides health services as well as coverage and benefits services, has experienced headwinds during the pandemic, including testing and treatment costs, people deferring non-COVID care, and the general economic downturn. But despite lingering negative effects, in the second quarter, it raised its full-year net earnings outlook. In the same quarter, the company increased its revenues by 14.8% from the prior-year quarter, although its earnings slipped.
\n
Alphabet Inc. (GOOG,GOOGL)
\n
Megacap technology-related companies were investing stalwarts even before the pandemic, making up a big chunk of the S&P 500. During the pandemic, they became a place for investors looking for relatively safe names. It may sound odd to list tech-related businesses as relatively safe assets, but these companies, with their huge market capitalizations and strong financial performance, are far from being risky startups. Investors looking for growth packaged in a large company with a strong balance sheet can turn to Google's parent company, Alphabet. Although there are regulatory risks hanging over the company as well as other huge tech stocks, Morningstar said in a recent post that decisions on antitrust cases will take a long time, and even a breakup of Alphabet would benefit shareholders.
\n
Apple Inc. (AAPL)
\n
One tidbit of wisdom that beginner investors may be told is to invest in things they know and use every day. By that measure,Apple would probably rank highly in beginner portfolios, considering how many iPhones are out there. And when people combine their use of the iPhone with other Apple products, such as iPads, Macs and Apple Watches, it makes them that much less likely to switch to a competitor. Apple increased its net sales in its most recent quarter by more than 36% as all of its categories, including iPhone, Mac and wearables, saw gains. \"Our record June quarter operating performance included new revenue records in each of our geographic segments, double-digit growth in each of our product categories, and a new all-time high for our installed base of active devices,\" Chief Financial Officer Luca Maestri said in a statement accompanying the earnings results.
\n
Microsoft Corp. Its suite of products includes household-name software, such as Excel and PowerPoint, and users devoted to that ecosystem may be less likely to switch. Microsoft is also a strong player in cloud services, which remain a crucial part of modern life, especially as the new normal for work includes more time out of the office. Its Azure cloud services business saw more than 50% year-over-year revenue growth in the company's most recent quarter.
