2022 Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2022) is underway in Las Vegas.

In contrast to last year's fully virtual event, this year's CES is going the hybrid route, with some exhibitors coming in person while others appearing only virtually. One thing that is definitely not virtual -- but real -- is the effect that the CES presentations seem to be having on tech stock prices, and semiconductor stocks in particular.

As chipmakers demo their wares today, shares of Intel(NASDAQ:INTC)(a "featured exhibitor" at CES 2022) are enjoying a nice 1.4% pop in afternoon trading, as of 4 p.m. ET. In contrast, Intel rivals Nvidia(NASDAQ:NVDA)and Advanced Micro Devices(NASDAQ:AMD)are moving in the opposite direction -- down 5.8% and 5.7%, respectively.

So what

So did Intel buy itself a pass on the chipmaker stock price declines, along with its "featured exhibitor" status at CES?

Not exactly. But investors do seem to be taking a shine to Intel's products unveiled at the show, and seem to be thinking that they position Intel's stock (if not necessarily Intel's business) to outperform its rivals in the coming year. AsIGN Entertainmentreported yesterday, "Intel is planning to take on AMD and Nvidia in the GPU market this year, with its first generation of Arc series GPUs codenamed Alchemist slated to release sometime early this year."

Granted, AMD and Nvidia are also focusing heavily on graphics this year (graphics being the historical roots of each of these companies). Yesterday, for example, data analytics company Lynxhighlighted the more than two dozen new chips that AMD will bring to market in 2022, with emphasis on the Radeon RX 6000S and RX 6000M chips for gaming laptops. And IGN seemed particularly impressed by the prospect of Nvidia bringing to market a new "RTX 3090 Ti" chip with "24GB of GDDR6X VRAM and 40 teraflops of GPU performance."

Translating the tech-speak into English, IGN helpfully explained that this chip, when it comes to market, will be "roughly 11% faster than its non-Ti RTX 3090 variant."

Now what

At least one analyst still thinks the advantage lies with Intel, however. In a note out this morning, Northland Capital Markets said it isupgradingIntel stock to outperform based on its view that Intel has laid out for investors a coherent strategy to reverse its decline "for the first time in many years," reportsStreetInsider.com.

Beyond just Intel's efforts to compete with AMD and Nvidia in graphics, Northland believes that Intel is upping its game in basic chip technology, to the point that it could "significantly reduce the AMD/INTC performance gap if not eliminate it in 2023." Northland sees Intel collaborating with Taiwan Semiconductor on production of next generation 3 nm and even 2 nm semiconductors, and refocusing its internal efforts on "manufacturing [static random access memory chips] which dominate modern CPU die area."

More significant for investors, Northland simply thinks that Intel stock at less than 10 times earnings is a better bargain than "high multiple stocks" such as AMD (which costs 43 times earnings today) and Nvidia (which costs 93 times earnings). In contrast to its pricier rivals, which may suffer from "multiple compression" this year (i.e., investors may not want to pay high multiples of earnings to own the stocks, resulting in falling stock prices), low-priced Intel stock could rise as much as 14% in value over the course of the next year.

Investors who watched their Intel shares underperform the market all year long in 2021 can only hope that Northland is right about that, and that Intel will finally reverse its slump in 2022.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Why Intel Popped, but AMD and Nvidia Dropped
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nWhy Intel Popped, but AMD and Nvidia Dropped\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-01-06 10:42 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
What happenedIt's Jan. 5 and at long last, the 2022 Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2022) is underway in Las Vegas. In contrast to last year's fully virtual event, this year's CES is going the hybrid ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"AMD":"美国超微公司","INTC":"英特尔","NVDA":"英伟达"},"source_url":"https://www.fool.com/investing/2022/01/05/why-intel-popped-but-amd-and-nvidia-dropped-today/","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1126735044","content_text":"What happenedIt's Jan. 5 and at long last, the 2022 Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2022) is underway in Las Vegas. In contrast to last year's fully virtual event, this year's CES is going the hybrid route, with some exhibitors coming in person while others appearing only virtually. It’s now seesawing back and forth between the mark for the thrill of it.

It’s a remarkable feat for a company that needed a cash infusion from rival Microsoft in 1997 to stay afloat. But $3 trillion is Monday’s news. So where does the company go from here?

There’s the obvious — more iPhones that get people into the company’s ecosystem and accessories like the Apple Watch and AirPods to keep them hooked. But the company will also need to take big risks on its way to $4 trillion.

“Apple needs to assume that the sort of market power that they've enjoyed with the App Store and in the price of the iPhones, that's going to disappear,” explained Duke University Fuqua School of Business professor Campbell Harvey.

Thankfully for Apple, it already has a track record of jumping into established device and services categories and outshining its competitors with ease. Need proof? Look no further than the iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods to name a few of its products Apple developed by cribbing notes from competitors before leaving them in the dust.

But the company’s most anticipated upcoming products — its mixed reality headset and long-rumored Apple car — will be different from anything Apple has offered before.

Headsets are clunky and uncomfortable, Apple needs to change that

I’ve used headsets ranging from the Oculus Quest 2 to Sony’s PlayStation VR, and besides making me sweat like an animal after 15 minutes, the on-screen content is relatively pixelated.

But Apple has a knack for taking problematic products and making them hits. The iPhone wasn’t the world’s first smartphone when it launched in 2007. And the Apple Watch and AirPods weren’t the first smartwatch and wireless earbuds when they debuted in 2016. But they’ve all gone on to be bestsellers, because Apple improved on the design and capabilities of its competitors.

Facebook parent Meta is already plunging into the world of AR/VR and the metaverse. Apple will need to catch up. (Photo by Dmitry Feoktistov\\TASS via Getty Images)Dmitry Feoktistov via Getty Images

When it comes to headsets, however, Apple will not only have to improve comfort and image quality — it will also have to ensure plenty of apps can take advantage of the hardware. After all, while current consumer headsets are largely geared towards gamers, Apple is looking for volume sales, and that means offering apps that appeal to non-gamers too.

And even when Apple launches its headset, it might be some time before the mainstream gets on the bandwagon, if it ever does, according to Loup Ventures’ Gene Munster.

“The initial headsets’ demand when they first come out is going to be muted at best,” Munster explained. “I think it will grow into something that we use all the time. But to put that into perspective we're talking about a $2,500 to $3,000 headset that is still going to be uncomfortable for a lot of people to wear.”

However, the headset could evolve into an essential product. Apple has managed this before with the Apple Watch, which had a chilly reception before the company shifted its focus to fitness and saw sales explode. And if Apple can do the same with the headset, Munster explained, it could eventually rival the iPhone’s sales.

Apple’s car will drive its future

While it’s easy to see where Apple’s headset fits into its product portfolio, the rumored Apple car is about as far afield from its base expertise as it gets. But if Apple can pull off a car of its own, it could dictate the company’s future as much as the original iPhone did.

The car’s journey has had its fits and starts with Apple originally opting for its own electric self-driving vehicle, then switching to producing just the self-driving technology to power a car, and back to an electric self-driving car of its own again.

Apple will enter a crowded EV space with fellow tech giant Sony entering the fray. (Photo by Alex Wong/Getty Images)Alex Wong via Getty Images

As Tesla has proven, building a car brand is no easy task. What’s more, Apple is entering a crowded space with companies like Rivian (RIVN) bringing its trucks to market and contenders like Vinfast bringing its electric cars to the U.S. Traditional automakers like Ford (F) and GM (GM) have also jumped into the EV space. Even Sony is getting in on the game, revealing a second electric vehicle prototype and plans for an electric vehicle company at CES 2022.

Still, Apple’s own car will immediately be desirable because it’s made by Apple. In October, the company began selling a polishing cloth for $19, which sold out in days. It’s now seesawing back and forth between the mark for the thrill of it.It’s a remarkable feat for a company that needed a cash infusion from rival Microsoft in 1997 to stay afloat. But $3 trillion is Monday’s news. So where does the company go from here? There’s the obvious — more iPhones that get people into the company’s ecosystem and accessories like the Apple Watch and AirPods to keep them hooked. But the company will also need to take big risks on its way to $4 trillion.“Apple needs to assume that the sort of market power that they've enjoyed with the App Store and in the price of the iPhones, that's going to disappear,” explained Duke University Fuqua School of Business professor Campbell Harvey.Thankfully for Apple, it already has a track record of jumping into established device and services categories and outshining its competitors with ease. Need proof? Look no further than the iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods to name a few of its products Apple developed by cribbing notes from competitors before leaving them in the dust. But the company’s most anticipated upcoming products — its mixed reality headset and long-rumored Apple car — will be different from anything Apple has offered before.Headsets are clunky and uncomfortable, Apple needs to change thatI’ve used headsets ranging from the Oculus Quest 2 to Sony’s PlayStation VR, and besides making me sweat like an animal after 15 minutes, the on-screen content is relatively pixelated. But Apple has a knack for taking problematic products and making them hits. The iPhone wasn’t the world’s first smartphone when it launched in 2007. And the Apple Watch and AirPods weren’t the first smartwatch and wireless earbuds when they debuted in 2016. But they’ve all gone on to be bestsellers, because Apple improved on the design and capabilities of its competitors.Facebook parent Meta is already plunging into the world of AR/VR and the metaverse. Apple will need to catch up. (Photo by Dmitry Feoktistov\\TASS via Getty Images)Dmitry Feoktistov via Getty ImagesWhen it comes to headsets, however, Apple will not only have to improve comfort and image quality — it will also have to ensure plenty of apps can take advantage of the hardware. After all, while current consumer headsets are largely geared towards gamers, Apple is looking for volume sales, and that means offering apps that appeal to non-gamers too.And even when Apple launches its headset, it might be some time before the mainstream gets on the bandwagon, if it ever does, according to Loup Ventures’ Gene Munster.“The initial headsets’ demand when they first come out is going to be muted at best,” Munster explained. “I think it will grow into something that we use all the time. But to put that into perspective we're talking about a $2,500 to $3,000 headset that is still going to be uncomfortable for a lot of people to wear.”However, the headset could evolve into an essential product. Apple has managed this before with the Apple Watch, which had a chilly reception before the company shifted its focus to fitness and saw sales explode. And if Apple can do the same with the headset, Munster explained, it could eventually rival the iPhone’s sales.Apple’s car will drive its futureWhile it’s easy to see where Apple’s headset fits into its product portfolio, the rumored Apple car is about as far afield from its base expertise as it gets. But if Apple can pull off a car of its own, it could dictate the company’s future as much as the original iPhone did.The car’s journey has had its fits and starts with Apple originally opting for its own electric self-driving vehicle, then switching to producing just the self-driving technology to power a car, and back to an electric self-driving car of its own again.Apple will enter a crowded EV space with fellow tech giant Sony entering the fray. (Photo by Alex Wong/Getty Images)Alex Wong via Getty ImagesAs Tesla has proven, building a car brand is no easy task. What’s more, Apple is entering a crowded space with companies like Rivian (RIVN) bringing its trucks to market and contenders like Vinfast bringing its electric cars to the U.S. Traditional automakers like Ford (F) and GM (GM) have also jumped into the EV space. Even Sony is getting in on the game, revealing a second electric vehicle prototype and plans for an electric vehicle company at CES 2022.Still, Apple’s own car will immediately be desirable because it’s made by Apple. In October, the company began selling a polishing cloth for $19, which sold out in days. No, a polishing cloth isn’t the same as a car, but brand loyalty can go a long way.Innovation will be keyFor Apple to pull any of this off, and more, it will have to continue to invest heavily in research and development. In 2021, the company spent a staggering $21.9 billion on R&D. For comparison, Microsoft, the closest company to Apple in market cap, spent $5.6 billion.“I think part of the stock price today being so high, is that investors actually have the confidence that Apple is going to do something really innovative again in the future,” Harvey said. That, he explained, will be key to preventing Apple from becoming complacent with its current profit drivers, its iPhone and services, and ensure it stays ahead of the competition.“Do you really believe that in 10 years people will be carrying around a clunky iPhone? Or anything like what we've got today?” Harvey asked. It’s clear that Apple understands how to change with the times. It successfully pivoted from selling computers to iPods to iPhones to Apple Watches. Higher interest rates, which counter inflation, are also sparking fears of an economic slowdown and causing investors to rotate from dividend stocks toward lower-risk bonds.
\n
Faced with these challenges, it might seem like a bad idea to buy dividend-paying tech stocks. Apple
\n
Apple only pays a forward dividend yield of 0.5%, but its lowpayout ratioof 15% indicates there's still plenty of room for much higher payments. Apple's stock price has risen nearly 270% over the past three years, but it still doesn't look terribly expensive at 29 times forward earnings.
\n
Apple is an inflation-resistant company for two simple reasons. First, it has the clout to negotiate more favorable prices from its suppliers. Second, it probably won't lose a lot of its loyal customers if it charges higher prices for its hardware since they're already firmly locked into its software ecosystem.
\n
Apple has also consistently executed big stock buybacks, which have reduced its outstanding shares by nearly 22% over the past five years. Spending more cash on those buybacks, which boosts the value of its remaining shares, is a better strategy than letting its cash stagnate in an inflationary environment.
\n
Apple will face a near-term slowdown as it grapples with supply chain constraints, but its long-term outlook is still bright. Its services ecosystem continues to expand, and it will eventually expand into new next-gen markets like augmented reality, virtual reality, and connected cars.
\n
2. Verizon
\n
Verizon pays a forward dividend yield of 5%. The telecom giant has raised that dividend annually for 15 straight years, and it's spent less than half of its earnings per share on those payments over the past 12 months. The stock also trades at just nine times forward earnings.
\n
At first glance, Verizon seems like a lackluster investment. It's declined more than 10% over the past three years as the S&P 500 has risen nearly 70%.
\n
However, Verizon's stock will likely remain stable as rising inflation and higher interest rates rattle the markets. As the largest wireless carrier in the U.S., Verizon can likely pass on most of its higher costs onto consumers without significantly increasing its churn rates. It's also a more streamlined company than AT&T, which is still trying toundo the damageof the debt-fueled expansions of its media and pay-TV ecosystems.
\n
Verizon's stable returns, sticky ecosystem, high dividend, and low valuation will all make it an ideal safe-haven stock in an inflationary market.
\n
3. Qualcomm
\n
Qualcomm, one of the world's largest mobile chipmakers, pays a forward dividend yield of 1.5%. It's raised its annual payout over the past two years, and it's only spent about a third of its earnings on its dividends over the past 12 months.
\n
Qualcomm's two main businesses are both well-insulated from inflation. Its Snapdragon system on chips (SoCs), which bundle together a mobile CPU, GPU, and baseband modem, power most of the world's high-end smartphones. They can also be found in virtual reality headsets, cars, and drones. The secular growth of those markets will give Qualcomm plenty of pricing power.
\n
Its licensing business, which leverages its portfolio of wireless patents to earn a cut of every smartphone sold worldwide, also generates a stable stream of high-margin revenue. It then plows a large portion of that excess cash into big buybacks and dividends.
\n
Qualcomm's stock has already risen more than 200% as investors have recognized those long-term strengths, but it still looks cheap at 17 times forward earnings.
\n
4. Texas Instruments
\n
Texas Instruments manufactures a wide range of analog and embedded chips for consumer electronics, cars, industrial machines, and other markets. These chips aren't as powerful as Qualcomm's mobile chips, but they're just as essential and less capital-intensive to produce.
\n
Unlike Qualcomm, which outsources the production of its chips to third-party foundries, TI manufactures its own chips in-house. That business model insulates it from the ongoing chip shortage, and its cost-cutting migration from 200mm to 300mm wafers over the past few years enabled it to significantly reduce its own manufacturing costs and boost its gross margins.
\n
TI's business is naturally resistant to inflation since it has much better control over its own supply chain and operating expenses than other chipmakers, and it generates plenty of excess cash for buybacks and dividends. It reduced its number of outstanding shares by 46% between 2004 and 2020, and it's raised its dividend annually for 18 straight years. It currently pays a forward dividend yield of 2.4%, which is supported by a sustainable payout ratio of 52%.
\n
TI's stock has more than doubled over the past three years, but it still trades at 23 times forward earnings.
