It is a high-tech shoe. The story behind this company is that a very well-regarded soccer football player in European terms, in New Zealand, a national star, wanted to make a better running shoe. Sheep outnumber humans at a ratio of something like 7-to-1 in New Zealand, so his shoe uses composite materials, part wool, part high-tech materials. Tim Brown, teamed up with an engineer named Joey Zwillinger, to help them design the shoe, which is reminiscent of how Nike got started decades ago. This brand, Allbirds, is an emerging global brand in the sneaker industry. I'm going to run through all this pretty quickly here.</p>\n<p>It is a next-generation runner's shoe. The revenue growth rate of this company is 32%. That's not quarter over quarter, as I presented with&nbsp;<b>UiPath</b>. This is actually a compounded annual growth rate for the last few years, which is pretty fast for a sneaker company.</p>\n<p>It works on a direct-to-consumer plus a store footprint model. They've got about 22 stores globally. The rest is e-commerce. They have a gross margin of 52% -- actually, just for fun, I've lined up the same bullet points that I used with UiPath for totally different type of company -- 52% percent in this case is pretty good. I often talk, if you listen to<i>Industry Focus</i>by any chance, on that show, about manufacturers. Rule of thumb, across different manufacturing industries, you need to get above 50% to be able to scale and show eventual profit on the bottom line if you're a growth company, especially a consumer-facing company that is outsourcing its manufacturing distribution. They do that. So I like that margin profile.</p>\n<p>I talked about these two co-founders, Joey or Joe Zwillinger and Tim Brown, not Tom Brown. Speaking of Freudian slips, I can correct that in real-time, they own 13% of shares. The strategic edge here is brand strength. Don't ignore brand strength. I did this personally with&nbsp;<b>Yeti</b>, which had very similar characteristics to this company, and I thought, \"What is this small upstart challenger brand going to do?\" Yeti is becoming a very well-known brand in its own space. Numerous other examples that I can cite, but really briefly here, just to show you a couple of more things.</p>\n<p>This is their growth rate that I talked about, that 32% annual compounded annual growth rate. Digital is growing at about the same rate because it propels most of the sales. You see here the progression of their gross margin. That expense, I think is going to increase a little bit. They have one statistic that really interests me, in that -- let me see if I can find it really quickly, because I changed this up a little bit for time, I'm omitting some things. Bear with me. I will get it. Here we go. 100% of all their purchasing cohorts have contribution profits that make it profitable within the first month of purchase. What that means is, after you account for the materials, the cost of the shoe, the buying cohorts that come in, 100% of them are contributing positive. Basically, think of it similar to gross margin to this company. Basically, they just have to figure out their fixed cost as they scale. There's a clear path to profitability with the company. Then I will finish up here just by showing you this is pre-IPO. They just went public, had a spectacular debut. I think the stock nearly doubled. Just to show you the balance sheet is pretty solid even before their IPO. You see here there's about $160-odd million of working capital. The company has roughly $200 million in annual revenue.</p>\n<p>Here we go, just looking at the income statement, you can see they're not far from scaling into profitability. This is by choice. Over the past five years, UMC's stock price skyrocketed nearly 480% as TSMC's stock rose about 250%.</p>\n<p>Have investors been paying attention to the wrong Taiwanese chip foundry all this time?</p>\n<h3>The key differences between TSMC and UMC</h3>\n<p>TSMC controlled 52.9% of the pure wafer foundry market in the second quarter of 2021, according to TrendForce. <b>Samsung</b> ranked second with a 17.3% share, followed by UMC with a 7.3% share.</p>\n<p>TSMC manufactures chips of all sizes, but it generated 49% of its revenue from its smallest 5nm and 7nm nodes in its most recent quarter. TSMC and Samsung are the only two foundries that manufacture 5nm and 7nm chips, but TSMC's chips have a higher transistor density than Samsung's -- which makes its manufacturing process the most advanced in the world.</p>\n<p>That's why the world's top fabless chipmakers, including <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AEIS\">Advanced</a> Micro Devices</b>, <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AAPL\">Apple</a></b>, and <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/QCOM\">Qualcomm</a></b>, all outsource their highest-end chips to TSMC. That's also why there's a major traffic jam at TSMC's plants.</p>\n<p>UMC doesn't manufacture any chips beyond the 14nm node. Three years ago, it abandoned its efforts to develop smaller chips and focused on manufacturing less advanced chips for the automotive and Internet of Things (IoT) markets instead. UMC noted that developing more advanced chips would be too capital-intensive and that its market opportunity was smaller than its market for older chips.</p>\n<p>UMC has the capability to manufacture 14nm chips, but it isn't generating any meaningful revenue from that higher-end node yet. Instead, it generated 58% of its revenue by manufacturing 65nm, 40nm, 28nm, and 22nm chips last quarter, while the rest came from even older nodes.</p>\n<p>UMC's plants have been operating at maximum capacity this year, but it faces less pressure to aggressively build new plants like TSMC because other foundries -- like <b>GlobalFoundries </b>and <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/CAAS\">China</a>'s <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/00981\">SMIC</a></b> -- can also manufacture comparable chips for the automotive and IoT markets.</p>\n<h3>Which company is growing faster?</h3>\n<p>TSMC's revenue grew 4% in 2019 and jumped 25% in 2020, and analysts expect its revenue to rise 18% this year. They expect its revenue to grow another 18% in 2022 as the chip shortage drags on.</p>\n<p>UMC's operating revenue declined 2% in 2019 as it retreated from higher-end chips. But its revenue rose 19% in 2020 as demand for its mid- to lower-end chips accelerated, and analysts anticipate 18% sales growth this year followed by 10% growth in 2022.</p>\n<p>UMC's underlying technologies and revenue growth rates are less impressive than TSMC's, but its shift toward lower-end nodes enabled it to generate stronger earnings growth. TSMC's net income increased 50% in 2020, but UMC's net income nearly tripled.</p>\n<p>Analysts expect TSMC's net income to rise 12% this year, even as it starts executing an ambitious three-year $100 billion plan to boost its capacity. Not only can investors possibly beat the market (or at least put up quality returns) over the long haul, but they can do so with minimal effort, increasing the return on time spent. <b>Berkshire Hathaway</b>&nbsp;is the most famous modern conglomerate, run by <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> of the most well-known investors ever: Warren Buffett.</p>\n<p>One smaller company with similar characteristics to Berkshire Hathaway is <b>Nelnet</b> (NYSE:NNI), a conglomerate focused on financial services based in Lincoln, Nebraska. The stock is currently trading around its all-time highs above $81 per share, but it's still cheap relative to the value of all its assets, providing a great buying opportunity for long-term investors.</p>\n<h2>Slowly melting loan book</h2>\n<p>Nelnet's legacy business is a book of around $20 billion in student loans. It was barred in 2010 from originating new loans when the federal government took the business in-house, but it still has an existing portfolio that will generate cash over the next decade. And the best part about this loan portfolio? Nelnet doesn't take on any material default risk, since all loans are backed by the U.S. government.</p>\n<p>At the end of the second quarter, Nelnet estimated that through 2025, including the last two quarters of this year, this loan book will generate $1.39 billion in cash for the company. After 2025, it will become a much smaller part of the company, but it is still estimated to add another $830 million in cash over the life of the portfolio. Nelnet is using this cash stream to reinvest into its other businesses and return cash to shareholders through dividends (the stock currently yields a little over 1%) and share repurchases.</p>\n<h2>Education software and payments</h2>\n<p>Nelnet's second-largest business is Nelnet Business Services. This segment does tuition payment processing and software for administrative departments at K-12 schools and colleges and is growing at a steady clip. In 2020, NBS produced $66 million in operating income, and that was in a down year with COVID-19-related school closures and postponements. In the first half of this year, NBS had $48 million in operating income, giving the segment a 39% operating margin. Compare that to 2016, when NBS did $34 million in operating income for the full year. This segment is growing steadily for Nelnet and is likely on pace to blow by $100 million in annual operating profits within the next few years.</p>\n<h2>Other investments</h2>\n<p>Nelnet has a lot of smaller businesses and investments that round out the company. One is its loan servicing business, which did $15 million in operating income last quarter. This business requires winning contracts from the federal government, and there is a risk Nelnet won't win future contracts and this entire segment will go away. But with two competitors calling it quits this year, and only <b>Navient</b>&nbsp;remaining as a scaled student loan servicer, it is unlikely that Nelnet will lose this business.</p>\n<p>In 2020, Nelnet sold 48% of its stake in ALLO Communications, a broadband/fiber business, to SDC Capital Partners. Nelnet owns 45% of the business after the transaction, which is valued at $180 million. Under its venture arm, Nelnet owns 20% of sports highlights and film software company Hudl, which is sitting on its balance sheet at $78 million but would likely be worth many times that if Hudl started trading publicly today. Lastly, since 2013, Nelnet has invested $725 million into solar projects, real estate, and venture investments. All these projects are held at cost on Nelnet's balance sheet.</p>\n<h2>Valuation</h2>\n<p>So what's Nelnet worth to the market today? The measly sum of $3.1 billion. That's right, this group of high-quality businesses and a loan book that is <i>guaranteed</i> to spit out $1.39 billion in cash over the next five years can be bought for a market cap of $3.1 billion. Berkshire Hathaway is the most famous modern conglomerate, run by one of the most well-known investors ever: Warren Buffett.\nOne smaller company with similar characteristics to Berkshire Hathaway is Nelnet (NYSE:NNI), a conglomerate focused on financial services based in Lincoln, Nebraska. The stock is currently trading around its all-time highs above $81 per share, but it's still cheap relative to the value of all its assets, providing a great buying opportunity for long-term investors.\nSlowly melting loan book\nNelnet's legacy business is a book of around $20 billion in student loans. It was barred in 2010 from originating new loans when the federal government took the business in-house, but it still has an existing portfolio that will generate cash over the next decade. And the best part about this loan portfolio? Nelnet doesn't take on any material default risk, since all loans are backed by the U.S. government.\nAt the end of the second quarter, Nelnet estimated that through 2025, including the last two quarters of this year, this loan book will generate $1.39 billion in cash for the company. After 2025, it will become a much smaller part of the company, but it is still estimated to add another $830 million in cash over the life of the portfolio. Nelnet is using this cash stream to reinvest into its other businesses and return cash to shareholders through dividends (the stock currently yields a little over 1%) and share repurchases.\nEducation software and payments\nNelnet's second-largest business is Nelnet Business Services. This segment does tuition payment processing and software for administrative departments at K-12 schools and colleges and is growing at a steady clip. In 2020, NBS produced $66 million in operating income, and that was in a down year with COVID-19-related school closures and postponements. In the first half of this year, NBS had $48 million in operating income, giving the segment a 39% operating margin. Compare that to 2016, when NBS did $34 million in operating income for the full year. This segment is growing steadily for Nelnet and is likely on pace to blow by $100 million in annual operating profits within the next few years.\nOther investments\nNelnet has a lot of smaller businesses and investments that round out the company. One is its loan servicing business, which did $15 million in operating income last quarter. This business requires winning contracts from the federal government, and there is a risk Nelnet won't win future contracts and this entire segment will go away. But with two competitors calling it quits this year, and only Navient remaining as a scaled student loan servicer, it is unlikely that Nelnet will lose this business.\nIn 2020, Nelnet sold 48% of its stake in ALLO Communications, a broadband/fiber business, to SDC Capital Partners. Nelnet owns 45% of the business after the transaction, which is valued at $180 million. Under its venture arm, Nelnet owns 20% of sports highlights and film software company Hudl, which is sitting on its balance sheet at $78 million but would likely be worth many times that if Hudl started trading publicly today. Turning buildings into data</h3>\n<p>Savills World Research estimates that the total value of buildings worldwide could be as high as $230 trillion; most of it is \"offline,\" as these buildings were built years before the internet. These buildings are isolated from the digital world, and are only viewable in photo images and \"blueprints,\" documents that map a space's dimensions and features.</p>\n<p>Matterport is bringing buildings into the digital world. Using a combination of special cameras and its smartphone app to record physical spaces, Matterport's patented software then converts them into 3D models that can be viewed, measured, and interacted with.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/14069bd7e6693ec12952c4ec8c1e363c\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"632\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"></p>\n<p>Image Source: Getty Images</p>\n<p>Matterport was founded in 2011, but only went public last month via a SPAC. To date, the company has captured 4.9 million spaces, totaling 15 billion square feet. Management estimates that this is 100X more than its closest competitor, giving Matterport a significant first-mover's advantage.</p>\n<h3>2. Matterport has many uses</h3>\n<p>The massive global supply of buildings translates to an addressable market that management estimates to be $240 billion. Matterport's potential upside will be determined by how well it can capture that market.</p>\n<p>Digitizing property unlocks a variety of uses for Matterport's customers. Existing customers are using the technology to give consumers digital access to properties. Prospective homebuyers can tour digital versions of houses on <b>Redfin</b>, and renters can preview properties before booking them on <b>Airbnb</b>. Insurance companies can document property claims better than photos could. Retailers are even starting to use Matterport to construct virtual representations of their stores, where online customers can browse and purchase from within 3D storefronts.</p>\n<p>Matterport has collected more than 3 billion data points to date, and management hopes to begin using that data to provide data-based insights to its customers. This could include measuring dimensions within buildings, breaking down trends, or simply answering customer questions. Imagine wanting to replace windows in a commercial building and being able to determine measurements without setting foot on location!</p>\n<p>From maintenance to real estate to retail, there are many ways that companies can use digital spaces. The many buildings in the world and the potential applications of this technology could lead to years of potential growth opportunities for Matterport.</p>\n<h3>3. Fueling many years of growth ahead</h3>\n<p>Matterport sells camera hardware for capturing spaces and offers its technology on a subscription-based model. Revenue in 2020 was $86 million, with 38% being hardware sales. The company's subscriptions have higher gross margins than its product sales, and management expects subscription revenue to outpace hardware sales over time, increasing Matterport's overall profitability. The business is not currently profitable, however, having lost $11.6 million from operations in 2020.</p>\n<p>Matterport's business is positioned to grow revenue for the foreseeable future thanks to the multiple ways the company is expanding. It released a smartphone app in 2020, for example, which has made it much easier to get started on the platform.</p>\n<p>It offers a \"freemium\" model, where users can try Matterport for free before becoming paid customers to unlock the full platform. Enterprise customers that have converted from free to paid subscribers include <b>Shopify</b>, <b>Starbucks</b>, Hermes Paris, and Andersen Windows &amp; Doors. Management disclosed that 13% of the Fortune 1000 are currently using the free model.</p>\n<p>Its subscriber growth increased six-fold in 2021's Q1 over 2020, growing total revenue 108% to $26.9 million year-over-year. Management is guiding for 2021 full-year revenue to grow 43% from 2020 to $123 million. The increase in subscribers could indicate strong revenue growth over the coming years, because customers spend 29% more after subscribing to Matterport's platform.</p>\n<h3>Is Matterport a buy today?</h3>\n<p>Matterport is newly public and is still just under $4 billion in market cap, giving investors long-term potential if the business can successfully grow. Matterport trades at a price-to-sales ratio of 30 using 2021 estimated revenue, a similar P/S ratio to that of other high-growth software stocks. If active money management is in decline, someone forgot to tell the ETF industry.</p>\n<p>Amped up by a meme-crazed market and emboldened by the success of Cathie Wood’s Ark Investment Management, stock pickers are storming the $6.6 trillion U.S. exchange-traded fund universe like never before -- adding a new twist in the 50-year invasion from passive investing.</p>\n<p>Passive funds still dominate the industry, but actively managed products have cut into that lead, scooping up three-times their share of the unprecedented $500 billion plowed into ETFs in 2021, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. New active funds are arriving at double the rate of passive rivals, and the cohort has boosted its market share by a third in a year.</p>\n<p>“Historically, people have thought about ETFs as being indexed-based,” said Todd Rosenbluth, head of ETF and mutual fund research at CFRA Research. “Then Ark became a household name, and then investors came to realize that not only were those products worth looking at, but so were others.”</p>\n<p>None of this is supposed to happen in an industry built on the magic of indexing. That’s 12% of total flows going to a slice of the market with only 4% of assets. In the rush to tap the burgeoning demand, issuers have now launched 156 actively managed products in 2021, compared with 77 passive funds.</p>\n<p>“At the end of day, the ETF is just a wrapper, it’s just a way to package and distribute an investment strategy,” said Ben Johnson, director of global ETF research at Morningstar. “More investors are getting hip to the fact that the notion of an actively-managed ETF is not an oxymoron.”</p>\n<p>Fifty-Year Battle</p>\n<p>The active surge is the latest development in a money-management battle that’s been raging since July 1971, when a team at Wells Fargo &amp; Co. created the original index fund.</p>\n<p>Today, the passive juggernaut is slashing industry costs, opening up investing to the masses and forcing discretionary traders to adapt or die. The flagship fund at Ark was one of the best-performing in America last year with a 149% return.</p>\n<p>Inspired by this and her enticing thematic approach -- which focuses on trends like robotics or space travel rather than market segments -- investors have sunk $14.5 billion into Ark funds in 2021.</p>\n<p>Passive Attack</p>\n<p>The mini boom for active ETFs comes not a moment too soon for the stock-picking industry.</p>\n<p>Passive funds -- mutual and exchange-traded -- now manage $11 trillion and are on course to hold 50% of all registered U.S. fund assets within five years, according to BI calculations.</p>\n<p>Critics say the rapidly swelling index industry is blowing bubbles in stock markets, weakening corporate governance and more. And in some ways, it can also hit returns.</p>\n<p>Take Tesla Inc.’s entry into the S&amp;P 500 in December. While discretionary managers could buy Elon Musk’s firm in advance, index funds ended up adding it at an inflated valuation -- and were forced to offload billions of dollars in other stocks to make space in portfolios.</p>\n<p>“Index funds systematically buy high and sell low,” wrote Rob Arnott of Research Affiliates and his colleagues in a June paper. They argued investors would have been better off holding the company pushed out of the index to make way for Tesla.</p>\n<p>The main advantage stock pickers enjoy over their passive peers is more flexibility in deploying their cash. That’s something they’ve been able to bring to ETFs for years -- Wood’s first fund launched in 2014 -- but it was a rule change in 2019 that paved the way for the current jump in activity.</p>\n<p>It made launching ETFs easier, and enabled new structures that could hide the strategy underpinning a fund. That helped lure multiple major Wall Street players to the industry after years of holding out, including the likes of Wells Fargo and T. Rowe Price.</p>\n<p>Talk of discretionary management’s decline is still rampant, but the woes aren’t as bad as they may seem. Even as U.S. active funds -- mutual and ETF -- saw $209 billion exit last year, they closed 2020 with about $13.3 trillion under management. Over the past five years, UMC's stock price skyrocketed nearly 480% as TSMC's stock rose about 250%.</p>\n<p>Have investors been paying attention to the wrong Taiwanese chip foundry all this time?</p>\n<h3>The key differences between TSMC and UMC</h3>\n<p>TSMC controlled 52.9% of the pure wafer foundry market in the second quarter of 2021, according to TrendForce. <b>Samsung</b> ranked second with a 17.3% share, followed by UMC with a 7.3% share.</p>\n<p>TSMC manufactures chips of all sizes, but it generated 49% of its revenue from its smallest 5nm and 7nm nodes in its most recent quarter. TSMC and Samsung are the only two foundries that manufacture 5nm and 7nm chips, but TSMC's chips have a higher transistor density than Samsung's -- which makes its manufacturing process the most advanced in the world.</p>\n<p>That's why the world's top fabless chipmakers, including <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AEIS\">Advanced</a> Micro Devices</b>, <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AAPL\">Apple</a></b>, and <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/QCOM\">Qualcomm</a></b>, all outsource their highest-end chips to TSMC. That's also why there's a major traffic jam at TSMC's plants.</p>\n<p>UMC doesn't manufacture any chips beyond the 14nm node. Three years ago, it abandoned its efforts to develop smaller chips and focused on manufacturing less advanced chips for the automotive and Internet of Things (IoT) markets instead. UMC noted that developing more advanced chips would be too capital-intensive and that its market opportunity was smaller than its market for older chips.</p>\n<p>UMC has the capability to manufacture 14nm chips, but it isn't generating any meaningful revenue from that higher-end node yet. Instead, it generated 58% of its revenue by manufacturing 65nm, 40nm, 28nm, and 22nm chips last quarter, while the rest came from even older nodes.</p>\n<p>UMC's plants have been operating at maximum capacity this year, but it faces less pressure to aggressively build new plants like TSMC because other foundries -- like <b>GlobalFoundries </b>and <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/CAAS\">China</a>'s <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/00981\">SMIC</a></b> -- can also manufacture comparable chips for the automotive and IoT markets.</p>\n<h3>Which company is growing faster?</h3>\n<p>TSMC's revenue grew 4% in 2019 and jumped 25% in 2020, and analysts expect its revenue to rise 18% this year. They expect its revenue to grow another 18% in 2022 as the chip shortage drags on.</p>\n<p>UMC's operating revenue declined 2% in 2019 as it retreated from higher-end chips. But its revenue rose 19% in 2020 as demand for its mid- to lower-end chips accelerated, and analysts anticipate 18% sales growth this year followed by 10% growth in 2022.</p>\n<p>UMC's underlying technologies and revenue growth rates are less impressive than TSMC's, but its shift toward lower-end nodes enabled it to generate stronger earnings growth. TSMC's net income increased 50% in 2020, but UMC's net income nearly tripled.</p>\n<p>Analysts expect TSMC's net income to rise 12% this year, even as it starts executing an ambitious three-year $100 billion plan to boost its capacity. But they expect UMC's net income to more than double this year as it maintains stable capex levels and avoids the spending war between TSMC and <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/INTC\">Intel</a></b> (NASDAQ:INTC), which has set an ambitious goal of reclaiming its lead in the process race from TSMC by 2025.</p>\n<h3>The tortoise or the hare?</h3>\n<p>TSMC is still growing rapidly, but it's paying a high price to maintain its lead against Samsung and Intel. UMC is also generating robust growth, but it's maintaining a lower profile, serving lower-end markets, and isn't allocating tens of billions of dollars toward the construction of new cutting-edge plants.</p>\n<p>TSMC's stock looks reasonably valued at 21 times next year's earnings, but UMC trades at just 13 times next year's earnings -- even though it's already outperformed its larger rival over the past 12 months.</p>\n<p>UMC is essentially the tortoise of the foundry sector to TSMC's hare. If active money management is in decline, someone forgot to tell the ETF industry.</p>\n<p>Amped up by a meme-crazed market and emboldened by the success of Cathie Wood’s Ark Investment Management, stock pickers are storming the $6.6 trillion U.S. exchange-traded fund universe like never before -- adding a new twist in the 50-year invasion from passive investing.</p>\n<p>Passive funds still dominate the industry, but actively managed products have cut into that lead, scooping up three-times their share of the unprecedented $500 billion plowed into ETFs in 2021, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. New active funds are arriving at double the rate of passive rivals, and the cohort has boosted its market share by a third in a year.</p>\n<p>“Historically, people have thought about ETFs as being indexed-based,” said Todd Rosenbluth, head of ETF and mutual fund research at CFRA Research. “Then Ark became a household name, and then investors came to realize that not only were those products worth looking at, but so were others.”</p>\n<p>None of this is supposed to happen in an industry built on the magic of indexing. Yet a market roller coaster brought on by the pandemic is helping discretionary asset managers turn ETFs to their own advantage.</p>\n<p>Equity conditions in general have become conducive to an active approach, leadership shifting in a stop-start economy, an unpredictable macro backdrop, and increased market breadth.</p>\n<p>Read more: Active Funds Crushed Equity Benchmarks in May Like Never Before</p>\n<p>At the same time, investors are showing an unusual willingness to make concentrated bets, from riding the meme-stock madness to following the kind of thematic vision laid out by Wood.</p>\n<p>They’ve poured $62 billion into active ETFs year-to-date. That’s 12% of total flows going to a slice of the market with only 4% of assets. In the rush to tap the burgeoning demand, issuers have now launched 156 actively managed products in 2021, compared with 77 passive funds.</p>\n<p>“At the end of day, the ETF is just a wrapper, it’s just a way to package and distribute an investment strategy,” said Ben Johnson, director of global ETF research at Morningstar. “More investors are getting hip to the fact that the notion of an actively-managed ETF is not an oxymoron.”</p>\n<p>Fifty-Year Battle</p>\n<p>The active surge is the latest development in a money-management battle that’s been raging since July 1971, when a team at Wells Fargo &amp; Co. created the original index fund.</p>\n<p>Today, the passive juggernaut is slashing industry costs, opening up investing to the masses and forcing discretionary traders to adapt or die. Active launches may be booming, but the bulk of cash flooding U.S. stocks is still destined for big, cheap funds that do nothing but track the market.</p>\n<p>Read more: Wall Street Surrenders to the $500 Billion ETF Rush</p>\n<p>“Active ETFs are doing better than they have in past, but passive is still king,” said James Seyffart, an ETF analyst for Bloomberg Intelligence. “A lot of that active flow in the big months from late 2020 to early 2021 is to Cathie’s funds.”</p>\n<p>Wood has become the poster child for active management in ETFs. The flagship fund at Ark was one of the best-performing in America last year with a 149% return.</p>\n<p>Inspired by this and her enticing thematic approach -- which focuses on trends like robotics or space travel rather than market segments -- investors have sunk $14.5 billion into Ark funds in 2021.</p>\n<p>Passive Attack</p>\n<p>The mini boom for active ETFs comes not a moment too soon for the stock-picking industry.</p>\n<p>Passive funds -- mutual and exchange-traded -- now manage $11 trillion and are on course to hold 50% of all registered U.S. fund assets within five years, according to BI calculations.</p>\n<p>Critics say the rapidly swelling index industry is blowing bubbles in stock markets, weakening corporate governance and more. And in some ways, it can also hit returns.</p>\n<p>Take Tesla Inc.’s entry into the S&amp;P 500 in December. While discretionary managers could buy Elon Musk’s firm in advance, index funds ended up adding it at an inflated valuation -- and were forced to offload billions of dollars in other stocks to make space in portfolios.</p>\n<p>“Index funds systematically buy high and sell low,” wrote Rob Arnott of Research Affiliates and his colleagues in a June paper. They argued investors would have been better off holding the company pushed out of the index to make way for Tesla.</p>\n<p>The main advantage stock pickers enjoy over their passive peers is more flexibility in deploying their cash. That’s something they’ve been able to bring to ETFs for years -- Wood’s first fund launched in 2014 -- but it was a rule change in 2019 that paved the way for the current jump in activity.</p>\n<p>It made launching ETFs easier, and enabled new structures that could hide the strategy underpinning a fund. That helped lure multiple major Wall Street players to the industry after years of holding out, including the likes of Wells Fargo and T. Rowe Price.</p>\n<p>Talk of discretionary management’s decline is still rampant, but the woes aren’t as bad as they may seem. Even as U.S. active funds -- mutual and ETF -- saw $209 billion exit last year, they closed 2020 with about $13.3 trillion under management. In this&nbsp;<i>Backstage Pass</i>video,&nbsp;<b>recorded on</b>&nbsp;<b>Nov. 8</b>, Motley Fool analyst Asit Sharma shares his thoughts on Allbirds.</p>\n<p><b>Asit Sharma:</b>This is a shoe made by a company called Allbirds. It is a high-tech shoe. The story behind this company is that a very well-regarded soccer football player in European terms, in New Zealand, a national star, wanted to make a better running shoe. Sheep outnumber humans at a ratio of something like 7-to-1 in New Zealand, so his shoe uses composite materials, part wool, part high-tech materials. Tim Brown, teamed up with an engineer named Joey Zwillinger, to help them design the shoe, which is reminiscent of how Nike got started decades ago. This brand, Allbirds, is an emerging global brand in the sneaker industry. I'm going to run through all this pretty quickly here.</p>\n<p>It is a next-generation runner's shoe. The revenue growth rate of this company is 32%. That's not quarter over quarter, as I presented with&nbsp;<b>UiPath</b>. This is actually a compounded annual growth rate for the last few years, which is pretty fast for a sneaker company.</p>\n<p>It works on a direct-to-consumer plus a store footprint model. They've got about 22 stores globally. The rest is e-commerce. They have a gross margin of 52% -- actually, just for fun, I've lined up the same bullet points that I used with UiPath for totally different type of company -- 52% percent in this case is pretty good. I often talk, if you listen to<i>Industry Focus</i>by any chance, on that show, about manufacturers. Rule of thumb, across different manufacturing industries, you need to get above 50% to be able to scale and show eventual profit on the bottom line if you're a growth company, especially a consumer-facing company that is outsourcing its manufacturing distribution. They do that. So I like that margin profile.</p>\n<p>I talked about these two co-founders, Joey or Joe Zwillinger and Tim Brown, not Tom Brown. Speaking of Freudian slips, I can correct that in real-time, they own 13% of shares. The strategic edge here is brand strength. Don't ignore brand strength. I did this personally with&nbsp;<b>Yeti</b>, which had very similar characteristics to this company, and I thought, \"What is this small upstart challenger brand going to do?\" Yeti is becoming a very well-known brand in its own space. Numerous other examples that I can cite, but really briefly here, just to show you a couple of more things.</p>\n<p>This is their growth rate that I talked about, that 32% annual compounded annual growth rate. Digital is growing at about the same rate because it propels most of the sales. You see here the progression of their gross margin. That expense, I think is going to increase a little bit. They have one statistic that really interests me, in that -- let me see if I can find it really quickly, because I changed this up a little bit for time, I'm omitting some things. Bear with me. I will get it. Here we go. 100% of all their purchasing cohorts have contribution profits that make it profitable within the first month of purchase. What that means is, after you account for the materials, the cost of the shoe, the buying cohorts that come in, 100% of them are contributing positive. Basically, think of it similar to gross margin to this company. Basically, they just have to figure out their fixed cost as they scale. There's a clear path to profitability with the company. Then I will finish up here just by showing you this is pre-IPO. They just went public, had a spectacular debut. I think the stock nearly doubled. Just to show you the balance sheet is pretty solid even before their IPO. You see here there's about $160-odd million of working capital. The company has roughly $200 million in annual revenue.</p>\n<p>Here we go, just looking at the income statement, you can see they're not far from scaling into profitability. This is by choice. This eco-friendly shoemaker is building a recognizable brand, and its business is trending toward profitability. In this Backstage Passvideo, recorded on Nov. 8, Motley Fool analyst Asit Sharma shares his thoughts on Allbirds.\nAsit Sharma:This is a shoe made by a company called Allbirds. It is a high-tech shoe. The story behind this company is that a very well-regarded soccer football player in European terms, in New Zealand, a national star, wanted to make a better running shoe. Sheep outnumber humans at a ratio of something like 7-to-1 in New Zealand, so his shoe uses composite materials, part wool, part high-tech materials. Tim Brown, teamed up with an engineer named Joey Zwillinger, to help them design the shoe, which is reminiscent of how Nike got started decades ago. This brand, Allbirds, is an emerging global brand in the sneaker industry. I'm going to run through all this pretty quickly here.\nIt is a next-generation runner's shoe. The revenue growth rate of this company is 32%. That's not quarter over quarter, as I presented with UiPath. This is actually a compounded annual growth rate for the last few years, which is pretty fast for a sneaker company.\nIt works on a direct-to-consumer plus a store footprint model. They've got about 22 stores globally. The rest is e-commerce. They have a gross margin of 52% -- actually, just for fun, I've lined up the same bullet points that I used with UiPath for totally different type of company -- 52% percent in this case is pretty good. I often talk, if you listen toIndustry Focusby any chance, on that show, about manufacturers. Rule of thumb, across different manufacturing industries, you need to get above 50% to be able to scale and show eventual profit on the bottom line if you're a growth company, especially a consumer-facing company that is outsourcing its manufacturing distribution. They do that. So I like that margin profile.\nI talked about these two co-founders, Joey or Joe Zwillinger and Tim Brown, not Tom Brown. Speaking of Freudian slips, I can correct that in real-time, they own 13% of shares. The strategic edge here is brand strength. Don't ignore brand strength. I did this personally with Yeti, which had very similar characteristics to this company, and I thought, \"What is this small upstart challenger brand going to do?\" Yeti is becoming a very well-known brand in its own space. Numerous other examples that I can cite, but really briefly here, just to show you a couple of more things.\nThis is their growth rate that I talked about, that 32% annual compounded annual growth rate. Digital is growing at about the same rate because it propels most of the sales. You see here the progression of their gross margin. That expense, I think is going to increase a little bit. They have one statistic that really interests me, in that -- let me see if I can find it really quickly, because I changed this up a little bit for time, I'm omitting some things. Bear with me. I will get it. Here we go. 100% of all their purchasing cohorts have contribution profits that make it profitable within the first month of purchase. What that means is, after you account for the materials, the cost of the shoe, the buying cohorts that come in, 100% of them are contributing positive. Basically, think of it similar to gross margin to this company. Basically, they just have to figure out their fixed cost as they scale. There's a clear path to profitability with the company. Then I will finish up here just by showing you this is pre-IPO. They just went public, had a spectacular debut. I think the stock nearly doubled. Just to show you the balance sheet is pretty solid even before their IPO. You see here there's about $160-odd million of working capital. The company has roughly $200 million in annual revenue.\nHere we go, just looking at the income statement, you can see they're not far from scaling into profitability. This is by choice.
