Ford stock rose.
\n
The No. 2 U.S. auto giant said Thursday that it expects adjusted pretax earnings for the second quarter to surpass its own expectations and be \"significantly better\" than a year ago.
\n
That's despite the semiconductor shortage, which Ford said April 28 would halve its planned Q2 production and reduce full-year adjusted EBIT to $5.5 billion-$6.5 billion.
\n
Ford did not offer specific Q2 guidance on April 28 or Thursday. It will report for Q2 and offer outlook for the rest of the year July 28.
\n
On Wednesday, GM forecast adjusted earnings before taxes of $8.5 billion-$9.5 billion in the first half of 2021, up from an earlier view for $5.5 billion, due to strong demand for its SUVs and trucks. GM remains cautious for the full year.
\n
Also Thursday, Ford touted 100,000 reservations for the F-150 Lightning, its first all-electric pickup truck and Tesla Cybertruck rival. That's up from 20,000 reported May 20 after a launch event, and 70,000 on May 26.
\n
Meanwhile, its new compact Maverick truck has 36,000 reservations, just a week after unveiling. Ford also reported 20,000 reservations for the all-electric E-Transit commercial van and 190,000 for the new, full-size Bronco SUV.
\n
CEO Jim Farley will further address Q2 financial guidance at a Deutsche Bank auto industry conference Thursday afternoon.
\n
Ford Stock
\n
Shares rose 1.3% to 15.22 in Thursday's stock market. Ford stock, on the IBD Leaderboard, is extended from a cup-without-handle 13.72 buy point, cleared late May on its bold EV shift. Despite navigating its way through Black Monday in 1987, the dot-com bubble, the Great Recession, and more recently the coronavirus crash, the average annual total return for the benchmark S&P 500 since 1980, including dividends, is north of 11%.
\n
Not surprisingly, we see this optimism readily apparent in Wall Street's ratings on stocks. According to FactSet, more than half of all stocks carry a consensus buy rating, 38% have the equivalent of a hold rating, and just 7% are rated as sells. Yet, history shows that far more than 7% of stocks will eventually head lower.
\n
Based on Wall Street's consensus price targets, the following five ultra-popular stocks are all expected to lose value over the coming 12 months.
\n

\n
\n
Palantir Technologies: Implied downside of 12%
\n
Since its direct listing in late September 2020, data-mining company Palantir Technologies (NYSE:PLTR) has been a favorite among growth and retail investors. But if Wall Street's one-year consensus price target proves accurate, Palantir will head in reverse by up to 12%.
\n
The likeliest reason Wall Street is tempering expectations on Palantir is valuation. Specifically, Palantir ended June 17 with a market cap of nearly $48 billion, but is on track to bring in perhaps $1.5 billion in full-year sales in 2021. That's a multiple of about 32 times sales. Even if Palantir continues to grow its top-line at 30% annually, it could take years for this price-to-sales multiple to come down to anywhere close to the average for cloud stocks.
\n
Another possible concern is the growth potential for its government-focused Gotham platform. Big government contract wins in the U.S. have been primarily responsible for Palantir's exceptional growth rate. However, there remains an outside chance that President Joe Biden may curb funding to some of the federal agencies that employ Palantir's services.
\n
Over the long run, I'm optimistic and believe Palantir's platform is unlike anything else available. But tempering near-term expectations given its valuation premium may be warranted.
\n

\n
\n
Moderna: Implied downside of 11%
\n
Biotech stock Moderna (NASDAQ:MRNA) is arguably the biggest beneficiary of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. It's one of only three drugmakers to currently have their COVID-19 vaccine approved on an emergency-use authorization (EUA) basis in the United States. But if Wall Street's consensus 12-month price target is correct, it's stock is also on its way to a double-digit decline.
\n
Why the lack of love from Wall Street? The answer looks to be analysts looking to the future. While Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine is a mainstay in the U.S., and it's likely to play a clear role in other markets, time might prove the company's enemy. Over time, new vaccines are expected to come onto the scene, which'll eat away at Moderna's potential pool of patients.
\n
The other worry is that no one is exactly certain how long COVID-19 vaccine immunity will last. If it's a year, Moderna is unlikely to be the only drugmaker supplying booster shots. Meanwhile, if it's longer than a year, it means reduced sales opportunities for the company.
\n
Based solely on Wall Street's earnings per share consensus in 2021 and 2022, Moderna appears reasonably priced. But with the company staring down a potentially significant haircut in revenue next year as new drugmakers enter the space, caution is advised.
\n

\n
\n
GameStop: Implied downside of 71%
\n
This will probably come as a shock to no one, but Reddit favorite GameStop (NYSE:GME) is fully expected to fall flat on its face. Even though Wall Street's consensus price target for the company has quintupled in recent months, it still implies up to 71% downside over the next year.
\n
The biggest issue for GameStop is that its valuation has completely detached from its underlying fundamentals. While it's not uncommon for stocks to trade on emotion for short periods of time, operating performance is what always dictates the long-term movement in the share price of a stock. When it comes to operating performance, GameStop has been a dud.
\n
Although the company's first-quarter fiscal results highlighted a 25% net sales increase from the prior-year period, total sales for the company have been falling precipitously for years. That's because video game retailer GameStop recognized the shift to digital gaming too late, and it's now stuck with its massive portfolio of brick-and-mortar gaming stores. Even though e-commerce sales have been a bright spot for the company, slashing costs and closing stores remains its No. 1 priority.
\n
With sufficient cash, bankruptcy isn't a concern for GameStop. But without any true top-line growth and the company still losing money, it's an impossible sell at its current price tag.
\n

\n
\n
Ocugen: Implied downside of 18%
\n
Volatile clinical-stage biotech stock Ocugen (NASDAQ:OCGN) may also be in for an unpleasant next 12 months. The company behind an experimental COVID-19 vaccine (Covaxin) and a trio of internally developed eye-blindness candidates is expected to shed 18% of its value, if Wall Street's consensus price target is correct.
\n
Arguably the biggest issue for Ocugen is the clinical update the company issued on June 10 concerning Covaxin. Even though partner Bharat Biotech led a large clinical study in India that yielded an overall efficacy of 78%, along with 100% efficacy in preventing severe forms of COVID-19, Ocugen announced on June 10 that it would forgo seeking an EUA in the U.S. and would instead file for a biologics license application. In other words, Ocugen's path to a quick emergency approval in the U.S. just flew out the window.
\n
What's more, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's requested additional information and data on Covaxin. This is a fancy of saying that Ocugen will very likely have to run a clinical study in the U.S. prior to submitting Covaxin for approval. That means added costs and an even longer wait before Ocugen has a chance to penetrate the lucrative U.S. market.
\n
Though it's impossible to predict how long COVID-19 vaccine immunity will last, Ocugen's chances of being a significant player in the U.S. COVID-19 vaccine space are dwindling.
\n

\n
\n
NVIDIA: Implied downside of 3%
\n
Don't adjust your computer, laptop, or smartphone screens -- that really says NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA). Following its incredible run higher (NVIDIA has doubled over the past year), graphics processing unit giant NVIDIA closed 3% above Wall Street's consensus price target, as of June 17.
\n
One reason for tempered expectations at this point has to be valuation. Even with NVIDIA crushing expectations and seeing strong PC gaming demand, sales growth is expected to slow from an estimated 49% in fiscal 2022 to a high single digit percentage in each of the next two fiscal years. In fact, the company closed at nearly 20 times projected sales for the current fiscal year. That's a bit optimistic given an expected sales growth slowdown.
\n
Perhaps the other reason Wall Street expects NVIDIA to go sideways is the company's cryptocurrency mining chip segment. While sales of crypto chips could hit $400 million in the current quarter, demand is entirely dependent on the hype surrounding digital currencies and the favorability of technical charts. Crypto is just as well known for its long bear markets as it is for the big gains it's delivered over the past decade. If another lull strikes, a fast-growing ancillary segment for NVIDA could easily become a drag.
\n
For what it's worth, I see no fundamental reasons to sell NVIDIA if you're already a long-term shareholder. But if you're on the outside looking in, I don't exactly see $746 as an attractive entry point, either.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
5 Ultra-Popular Stocks Wall Street Views as Overvalued
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n5 Ultra-Popular Stocks Wall Street Views as Overvalued\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-06-21 21:01 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Generally speaking, it pays to be bullish on Wall Street. That robust growth was supported by a growing list of customers, including Target, Home Depot, P&G, PayPal, and Twitter.
\n
Many retailers didn't want to feed Amazon's most profitable business unit, while some tech companies didn't want to tether themselves to Microsoft's sprawling software ecosystem. For those enterprise customers, Google Cloud seemed to be an attractive alternative.
\n
However, Google Cloud controlled just 7% of the global cloud infrastructure market in the first quarter of 2021, according to Canalys. AWS controlled 32% of the market, while Azure ranked second with a 19% share.
\n
Google Cloud also isn't profitable yet. Its operating loss widened from $4.3 billion in 2018 to $4.6 billion in 2019, then widened again to $5.6 billion in 2020. AWS is consistently profitable, while Microsoft doesn't disclose Azure's exact revenue or operating profits.
\n
These numbers suggest Apple would likely secure the cheapest cloud hosting rates from Google, which needs to gain more partnerships to keep pace with AWS and Azure. That might be great news for Apple, but bad news for Google Cloud's operating profits.
\n
The key takeaways
\n
The Information claims Apple's increased cloud spending could make it Google Cloud's \"largest\" corporate client, but $300 million only equals 2% of Google's total cloud revenue last year. Apple is still likely hosting a lot of its iCloud services on AWS and Azure, so the report doesn't necessarily mean Google Cloud will become Apple's preferred cloud provider.
\n
Instead, this report indicates it's smarter for Apple to pit the three cloud platform kings against each other to gain favorable hosting prices than it is to build its own cloud infrastructure. It also suggests that Google Cloud -- which likely has significantly less pricing power than AWS and Azure -- could remain unprofitable for the foreseeable future.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Apple Could Become Google's Biggest Cloud Customer
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nApple Could Become Google's Biggest Cloud Customer\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-07-02 22:30 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Alphabet's (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Google compete against each other in mobile operating systems, smartphones, smart speakers, streaming media services, digital payments, ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"AAPL":"苹果","GOOGL":"谷歌A","GOOG":"谷歌"},"source_url":"https://www.fool.com/investing/2021/07/02/apple-could-become-google-biggest-cloud-customer/","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"2148803897","content_text":"Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Alphabet's (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Google compete against each other in mobile operating systems, smartphones, smart speakers, streaming media services, digital payments, and other growing markets. Who is buying stocks and cryptos from me when I’ve trimmed and sold for the past month or so? Sure, there are banks and institutions and hedge funds and family offices investing and trading, just as always. On the other hand, remember two years ago when I got back from a hedge fund investment conference in Abu Dhabi and everybody was desperate for returns:
\n
Amid low interest rates and other investors’ focus on options, credit and currencies, “the lack of focus on traditional stocks and funds that invest in publicly traded stocks makes me think that there is probably more opportunity in such assets than people realize. And funds that were looking everywhere but in the stock market for big gains are … well, pretty much in the markets now and long a bunch of stocks and even long a few cryptos.
\n
And now that those stocks and cryptos and most other assets have gone parabolic in the past year — coming on top of the 10-year bull market — the billion-dollar fund managers are joined by 23-year-old TikTok influencers doing bitcoin trading astrology.
\n
Yes, for real, and she’s very popular. She’s even been right about some of bitcoin’s action in the past few months! If you’re selling cryptos and fintech stocks right now, you’re selling to her and her followers. And also to my friend’s son, who just graduated from a tiny, rural school and whose unemployed uncle gave him $500 to “buy some cryptos. And make sure you get some fintech. I don’t know the symbol, but just look it up and you’ll do fine over the long run.” Bearish anecdotes everywhere I look, as I wrote recently.
\n
Mr. Market
\n
The other thing to remember about who’s on the other side of your trade is always to remember that there are smart, cutthroat traders and investors who went to the best schools and have access to more research and real-time data and instant trading access to all kinds of derivatives to layer into their bets. And the only thing they do all day, every day, is figure out how to take your money in mostly legal ways. They’re not playing around. They have no sympathy for you, even if they might empathize with you to better understand your motivations to better take your money.
\n
Mr. Market is mean. He’s not nice. He can be cruel. He can force liquidations that create other liquidations. He can shut off access to capital. He can take down 200-year-old banks in a day. In one day.
\n
Sometimes the markets lead the economy and not the other way around. Ironically, when we were young, we were taught that the Great Depression started when the stock market crashed on Black Friday in 1929. But then when we get older, we were taught that it wasn’t actually the crash that created the Great Depression, rather the economy was already crashing and the stock market just didn’t realize it as it continued on its merry way toward a terrible Blow-Off Top of a nine-year Bubble-Blowing Bull Market that culminated with the Dow Jones Industrial Average up 400% from the 1921 lows to the 1929 highs.
\n

\n
Learning from Soros
\n
But looking back, it’s clear that both theories are equally right and wrong — the market crashed because the economy wasn’t as good as the market thought it was, andthe economy crashed because the markets shut down access to capital for investment and growth.
\n
It was “reflexive,” to borrow a term from the great hedge fund manager George Soros.
\n
He wrote, and the concept is important to understand:
\n
“I continued to consider myself a failed philosopher. It cannot go on forever because eventually the participants’ views would become so far removed from objective reality that the participants would have to recognize them as unrealistic. Nor can the iterative process occur without any change in the actual state of affairs, because it is in the nature of positive feedback that it reinforces whatever tendency prevails in the real world. Instead of equilibrium, we are faced with a dynamic disequilibrium or what may be described as far-from-equilibrium conditions. Usually in far-from-equilibrium situations the divergence between perceptions and reality leads to a climax which sets in motion a positive feedback process in the opposite direction. Such initially self-reinforcing but eventually self-defeating boom-bust processes or bubbles are characteristic of financial markets, but they can also be found in other spheres. There, I call them fertile fallacies—interpretations of reality that are distorted, yet produce results which reinforce the distortion.”
\n
Stay flexible
\n
Far-from-equilibrium conditions was what we had in 2010-2013 when we loaded up on Revolutionary stocks and started buying cryptos like bitcoin. (You for sure don’t want to be a permabear!) We have to be flexible. We have to let our analysis and risk/reward scenarios dictate how much risk we’re taking and when. They forget that markets can grind for years on end without making new highs, or without even making higher highs. I haven’t heard anybody say that lately.
