Fool","summary":"There's been a lot of investor excitement about electric vehicle (EV) companies. And gains from some","content":"
There's been a lot of investor excitement about electric vehicle (EV) companies. And gains from some stocks have been exceptional over the last two years. Now, the landscape for the sector seems to be clearing so investors can get a better idea of who the players are, and over what time frame EV makers will be bringing out new offerings.
\n
Beyond just looking at the exciting new products and potentially huge market, investors should research details that will help compare and contrast the EV makers. If you're interested in diving in now, the three charts below will provide a look at some data worth considering before you make an investment.
\n
Returns have been unpredictable
\n
Many have bought into the EV sector looking for large, market-beating returns. While shares of EV leaderTesla(NASDAQ:TSLA)skyrocketed last year, as the field of publicly traded names has grown, returns have been inconsistent. And investors need to be prepared for plenty of volatility along the way. The chart below shows the most recent six-month returns from a mix of U.S.- and China-based EV makers:
\n
DATA BYYCHARTS.
\n
Even the strong returns from Tesla and Lucid Group(NASDAQ:LCID)stocks have included big swings in just the past two months. And though Chinese EV makers Nio(NYSE:NIO) and XPeng(NYSE:XPEV)have been growing sales quickly, their stocks have backtracked since June 2021.Lordstown Motors(NASDAQ:RIDE), maker of the Endurance all-electric work truck, has struggled, and shareholders have paid the price this year. The lesson is that there will be winners and losers, and EV stock moves can be quick and extreme.
\n
There's plenty of demand
\n
Just looking at share-price movement doesn't tell the full story, of course. While Nio and XPeng shares haven't moved higher in the last half-year, both company's sales skyrocketed over the first nine months of 2021, as shown below:
\n
DATA SOURCE: COMPANY FINANCIAL FILINGS. CHART BY AUTHOR.*XPENG 2021 COMPARISON WITH FINAL THREE QUARTERS OF 2020.
\n
Tesla has almost doubled its deliveries over the first nine months of 2021 compared to the year-ago period. But XPeng andNio deliveries are growing much faster, though the two Chinese companies are growing off of a much smaller base. And as both are already richly valued, with recent market capitalizations of around $36 billion and $48 billion, respectively, investors have sold off shares in recent months. Global demand is strong and growing, but that won't automatically result in growing share prices.
\n
Profitability will take time
\n
Investors in any business need to focus on the bottom line. Early stage growth companies aren't necessarily expected to become profitable quickly, however. Especially with a high-fixed-cost business like automotive manufacturing, profits will only come with scale. As the chart below shows, few EV makers are bringing in profits yet:
\n
DATA SOURCE: COMPANY FINANCIAL FILINGS. CHART BY AUTHOR.
\n
Tesla led the industry with a reported profit of more than $1.6 billion in the third quarter of 2021 .
\n
BYD is perhaps a less well-known Chinese EV company, and it sells more than just electric cars; it also makes batteries, electric buses, and traditional internal combustion vehicles. And gains from some stocks have been exceptional over the last two years. Now, the landscape for the sector seems to be clearing so investors can get a better idea of who the players are, and over what time frame EV makers will be bringing out new offerings.\nBeyond just looking at the exciting new products and potentially huge market, investors should research details that will help compare and contrast the EV makers. If you're interested in diving in now, the three charts below will provide a look at some data worth considering before you make an investment.\nReturns have been unpredictable\nMany have bought into the EV sector looking for large, market-beating returns. While shares of EV leaderTesla(NASDAQ:TSLA)skyrocketed last year, as the field of publicly traded names has grown, returns have been inconsistent. And investors need to be prepared for plenty of volatility along the way. The chart below shows the most recent six-month returns from a mix of U.S.- and China-based EV makers:\nDATA BYYCHARTS.\nEven the strong returns from Tesla and Lucid Group(NASDAQ:LCID)stocks have included big swings in just the past two months. The lesson is that there will be winners and losers, and EV stock moves can be quick and extreme.\nThere's plenty of demand\nJust looking at share-price movement doesn't tell the full story, of course. While Nio and XPeng shares haven't moved higher in the last half-year, both company's sales skyrocketed over the first nine months of 2021, as shown below:\nDATA SOURCE: COMPANY FINANCIAL FILINGS. CHART BY AUTHOR.*XPENG 2021 COMPARISON WITH FINAL THREE QUARTERS OF 2020.\nTesla has almost doubled its deliveries over the first nine months of 2021 compared to the year-ago period. But XPeng andNio deliveries are growing much faster, though the two Chinese companies are growing off of a much smaller base. And as both are already richly valued, with recent market capitalizations of around $36 billion and $48 billion, respectively, investors have sold off shares in recent months. Global demand is strong and growing, but that won't automatically result in growing share prices.\nProfitability will take time\nInvestors in any business need to focus on the bottom line. Early stage growth companies aren't necessarily expected to become profitable quickly, however. Especially with a high-fixed-cost business like automotive manufacturing, profits will only come with scale. As the chart below shows, few EV makers are bringing in profits yet:\nDATA SOURCE: COMPANY FINANCIAL FILINGS. CHART BY AUTHOR.\nTesla led the industry with a reported profit of more than $1.6 billion in the third quarter of 2021 .\nBYD is perhaps a less well-known Chinese EV company, and it sells more than just electric cars; it also makes batteries, electric buses, and traditional internal combustion vehicles. But its \"new energy vehicles\" -- which include plug-in hybrid electrics -- made up more than 90% of the nearly 100,000 new energy passenger vehicles it delivered in November.\nLucid and Rivian Automotive(NASDAQ:RIVN)are getting a lot of attention recently, but they've barely started shipping product; the losses there will continue for some time until those companies reach scale. Investors hope that Nio and XPeng reach profitability soon, as both are growing sales and expanding product offerings. The truck and SUV electric vehicle(EV) maker went public last month at $78. RIVN stock immediately shot up to a peak price of over $172 per share on Nov. 16. Since then its has drifted lower, and a month later it closed Monday at $88.98.
\n
Now analysts are starting to accept that the company never deserved that high a valuation. They are coming out with their initial assessments and recommendations.
\n
Given that it still has a market capitalization of almost $84 billion, a number of these analysts are skeptical. After all,General Motors(NYSE:GM) has a market cap of $79 billion, or slightly lower than Rivian. And even Ford Motor(NYSE:F) has a market valuation of $78 billion, also below Rivian’s $84 billion market cap. Both of these companies have huge production figures and are even delivering some EVs.
\n
Of course, Rivian’s market cap is nowhere near that of Tesla(NASDAQ:TSLA), which has a market value of $902 billion. Tesla is expected to come out with its own Cyber truck production and deliveries late in 2022, but it already has SUVs (Model Y).
\n
Where Things Stand For Rivian
\n
On Dec. 16, Rivian delivered its first quarterly results and produced a shareholder letter for investors with some good news. It now raised $19.9 billion in cash on its balance sheet, including $1.2 billion in senior secured debt. That gives it net cash of $18.7 billion before expenses and costs during the quarter, about what I projected in my last article on Rivian.
\n
This is a huge cushion for the company, which it can use to ramp its truck and SUV manufacturing volume up over the next year. For example, Rivian said that its free cash flow (FCF) was negative $1.154 billion during the quarter. This includes $685 million in negative operating cash flow and capex spending of $469 million.
\n
Here is why that is important. This implies that the annual run rate of cash burn is 4 x $1.15 billion, or $4.6 billion annually. Obviously, that burns through a good portion (about 23% of its available cash) annually.
\n
In other words, the company has to get FCF positive within the next few years, or it will face a crisis. As it stands now, assuming demand for its truck (S1T) and SUV (S1V) models is high, the company should be able to make it.
\n
Rivian clearly has had cash burn during the quarter and more will probably be burned this fourth quarter. I suspect that its cash balance is now down at least $3 billion to $16.9 billion or slightly lower. This helps to sustain its $84 billion market value, but the company needs to quickly get to being FCF positive.
\n
Where This Leaves RIVN Stock
\n
I want to see a full quarter of production costs and also its final balance sheet at the end of Q4 before I can put a clean value on RIVN stock. However, it was not hard last month to figure out that the stock was likely overvalued.
\n
However, I suspect that now the stock is getting close to a realistic valuation. In fact, I would not be surprised to see the stock fall below the $78 IPO price from November 2021.
\n
If that were to happen, it would be a good time to take another look at RIVN stock, in terms of how realistic valuation really is. At least then, there is some objective measure or tether of value that we can judge its value. This is despite the fact that we still don’t know how well its trucks and SUVs will sell.
","source":"lsy1606302653667","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Rivian Still Isn’t at a Buy Point … Yet
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nRivian Still Isn’t at a Buy Point … Yet\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-12-22 09:55 GMT+8 InvestorPlace\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
RIVN stock now has a more realistic valuation but until we get a full quarter of sales and cash flow we can't properly value Rivian\nRivian(NASDAQ:RIVN) has had a hard landing back to reality in terms ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"RIVN":"Rivian Automotive, Inc."},"source_url":"https://investorplace.com/2021/12/rivn-stock-now-has-a-more-realistic-valuation-but-we-cant-value-it-properly-until-the-company-has-a-full-quarter-of-sales/","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1152327733","content_text":"RIVN stock now has a more realistic valuation but until we get a full quarter of sales and cash flow we can't properly value Rivian\nRivian(NASDAQ:RIVN) has had a hard landing back to reality in terms of its valuation in the past month. The truck and SUV electric vehicle(EV) maker went public last month at $78. RIVN stock immediately shot up to a peak price of over $172 per share on Nov. 16. Since then its has drifted lower, and a month later it closed Monday at $88.98.\nNow analysts are starting to accept that the company never deserved that high a valuation. They are coming out with their initial assessments and recommendations.\nGiven that it still has a market capitalization of almost $84 billion, a number of these analysts are skeptical. Since its recent all-time high (ATH) in October, its price has dropped by a dramatic 43%. Many reasons have been presented on why the stock has fallen. We exhort investors not to read too much into them. We believe nothing material has changed from its fundamental thesis. The stock has had a remarkable run in 2021 relative to its gaming peers or e-tailer peers. Therefore, profit-taking of this extent should not be surprising as fear struck growth stocks.
\n
Moreover, the recent significant correction in growth stocks across the market has also hit SE stock hard. But, we are not concerned. Significant volatility will always be a factor influencing the performance of growth stocks like SE in the short term.
\n
Notably, we observed that the consensus target price on SE stock had been revised upwards since its FQ3 report card. Moreover, the gap between its price target and its current stock price has been greater than its last significant correction in April/May.
\n
Our internal DCF valuation model also points to a stock that is now significantly undervalued. Thanks to the market's myopia, we have been presented with another fantastic opportunity since April/May to add SE stock with great fervor again.
\n
We discuss why we think investors should not miss this incredible opportunity to add exposure to an outstanding growth stock.
\n
SE Stock YTD Performance
\n
SE stock YTD performance (as of 17 December'21).
\n
As a result of the significant correction recently, SE stock's YTD return has dropped to 6.9%, thus underperforming the market. Notably, its YTD gain was as high as 80% in October/early November. Despite that, the stock is still outperforming its e-tailer and gaming peers, as shown above.
\n
Sea Stock Estimates Have Consistently Been Revised Upwards
\n
Sea Limited revised revenue mean consensus estimates. Data source: S&P Capital IQ, Seeking Alpha
\n
Readers can quickly observe that the company's revenue consensus estimates for FY21-23 have consistently been revised upwards over the last five months. These revisions lend credence to the robust growth prospects of the company over the next two years. Therefore, profit-taking of this extent should not be surprising as fear struck growth stocks.\nMoreover, the recent significant correction in growth stocks across the market has also hit SE stock hard. But, we are not concerned. Significant volatility will always be a factor influencing the performance of growth stocks like SE in the short term.\nNotably, we observed that the consensus target price on SE stock had been revised upwards since its FQ3 report card. Moreover, the gap between its price target and its current stock price has been greater than its last significant correction in April/May.\nOur internal DCF valuation model also points to a stock that is now significantly undervalued. Thanks to the market's myopia, we have been presented with another fantastic opportunity since April/May to add SE stock with great fervor again.\nWe discuss why we think investors should not miss this incredible opportunity to add exposure to an outstanding growth stock.\nSE Stock YTD Performance\nSE stock YTD performance (as of 17 December'21).\nAs a result of the significant correction recently, SE stock's YTD return has dropped to 6.9%, thus underperforming the market. Notably, its YTD gain was as high as 80% in October/early November. Despite that, the stock is still outperforming its e-tailer and gaming peers, as shown above.\nSea Stock Estimates Have Consistently Been Revised Upwards\nSea Limited revised revenue mean consensus estimates. Data source: S&P Capital IQ, Seeking Alpha\nReaders can quickly observe that the company's revenue consensus estimates for FY21-23 have consistently been revised upwards over the last five months. The research firm then identified the eight riskiest names based on those measures.\n“Our view is that these are among the riskiest stocks to own today, so investors who own these names should have disproportionate upside to their base cases to compensate them for these risks,” Parker said.\nTake a look at five of the riskiest technology stocks, according to Trivariate.\nRISKIEST TECH STOCKS, ACCORDING TO TRIVARIATE\n\n\n\nTICKER\nCOMPANY\nPRICE\n%CHANGE\n\n\n\n\nMCHP\nMicrochip Technology Inc\n145.62\n-3.0686\n\n\nTWLO\nTwilio Inc\n367.61\n1.84\n\n\nSQ\nSquare Inc\n237.05\n0.39\n\n\nNVDA\nNVIDIA Corp\n745.55\n-0.0992\n\n\nAAPL\nApple Inc\n130.46\n-1.0092\n\n\n\nApple is on Trivariate’s list of riskiest stocks. HSBC’s prior target was $54.\nNio said earlier in July that it delivered a record 8,083 vehicles in June, bringing its total for the second quarter to 21,896. The company had forecast deliveries between 21,000 and 22,000 for the period. June’s number follows a decline in May as the global chip shortage hurt Nio’s business.\nFor 2021, Nio has delivered more than 41,900 cars, which is almost as high as 2020′s total of 43,728.\nHSBC said that Nio’s established place in the electric vehicle market gives it a first-mover advantage as vehicle sales expand.\n“We see Nio’s strong brand traction, solid product offering and solid reputation among existing car owners to likely drive its continuing volume growth,” analysts led by Yuqian Ding wrote in a note to clients. “With existing SUV models and the to-be-introduced sedan series and its in-house autonomous driving software, we see Nio likely establishing itself in the premium EV segment.”\nUnderlying HSBC’s bullish call on Nio is the firm’s belief that electric vehicle sales across China will continue to rise. Ding noted that through May NEV sales, or new energy vehicles as they’re called in China, rose 236% year over year compared to 38% year-over-year growth in the overall auto market.\n“Generation Z, in our view, is likely the most tangible car buyer group for the coming decade and they are more electric vehicle friendly,” he said.\nHSBC lifted its 2025 and 2030 electric vehicle penetration estimates to 22% and 45%, up from 19% and 39%, respectively. Under its bull case scenario, the firm envisions EVs encompassing 71% of the market by 2030.\nHSBC also holds buy ratings on Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd and BYD.\nShares of Nio were down slightly on Friday. The company revealed the update ","content":"
Apple (AAPL) has unveiled the latest version of iOS, dubbed iOS 15. The company revealed the update on Monday during its virtual Worldwide Developers Conference 2021, or WWDC.

The changes to the operating system that powers millions of iPhones around the world include new notification settings, improvements to Messages, changes to Photos, and more. Here are the biggest changes coming to your iPhone with iOS 15.

Big changes to FaceTime

The FaceTime app is getting an overhaul to make video chats feel more natural for users by adding spatial audio, which allows audio to sound like it's coming from the direction in which a speaker is positioned in a call. If they're on the left, the sound will sound like it's coming from the left, and vice versa.

The company is also adding a feature that focuses specifically on your voice, blocking out background noise, as well as a means to take in even more of the sound around you. The new FaceTime Links option lets you plan a FaceTime call via Calendar invites or share links via text messages. The company is even allowing users without iOS devices to join FaceTime chats via web links, which Apple says will be encrypted just as they are on the iPhone or iPad.

Apple also debuted a new feature called SharePlay that lets you bring music and shows into your FaceTime calls, allowing you to listen and watch with friends and family. Shared controls will also let anyone in the call pause and play whatever you're listening to or watching. You'll also be able to watch shows via iOS's picture-in-picture mode or you can extend them to your TV via AirPlay.

Apple says SharePlay will work with Disney+. Twitch, Hulu, TikTok, ESPN+, and other services. Then there's a new screen sharing feature that lets you literally share what you're seeing on your screen with your friends, so you can show them what you're looking at online, or give them a hand with a quick instructional walkthrough if you're having trouble using an app.

Messages and Notification updates

Messages, meanwhile, is getting updates in the form of a feature called Shared with You, that allows you to view all of the news articles, and videos your friends have shared with you over time in your Messages, rather than losing them amidst your stream of back and forth texts.

The Photos app is also getting a Shared with You section to see photos that friends have shared with you. Apple says the only photos that will appear in your Photos app will be those that include your face, to prevent your library from becoming cluttered with screenshots and memes.

Notifications in iOS are also getting updates with improved icons and a feature called Notification summary. This will allow you to schedule when certain notifications appear and are ordered by priority. Notifications from people won't be in the summary, though, to make sure you still get messages the moment they're sent your way.

There's also a Do Not Disturb mode for Messages that will let people know that you're not taking texts at the moment, whether you're in a meeting or having dinner. Of course, people can still cut in by calling or alerting you that it's important.

There's also a new focus mode that allows you to set certain notifications for things like work or when you're out of the office. If you're at work, for example, only notifications for work apps will come through. Out of the office, you'll get notifications for non-work apps.

Live Text, Photos, and more

A new Live Text feature can now capture text from photos and paste them as text directly into emails or other apps. If you see a phone number in a shot, you can tap it and call it. Apple is also adding object recognition for photos, so they'll be able to identify pets and landmarks. The company revealed the update on Monday during its virtual Worldwide Developers Conference 2021, or WWDC.The changes to the operating system that powers millions of iPhones around the world include new notification settings, improvements to Messages, changes to Photos, and more. Here are the biggest changes coming to your iPhone with iOS 15.Big changes to FaceTimeThe FaceTime app is getting an overhaul to make video chats feel more natural for users by adding spatial audio, which allows audio to sound like it's coming from the direction in which a speaker is positioned in a call. The company is even allowing users without iOS devices to join FaceTime chats via web links, which Apple says will be encrypted just as they are on the iPhone or iPad.Apple also debuted a new feature called SharePlay that lets you bring music and shows into your FaceTime calls, allowing you to listen and watch with friends and family. Shared controls will also let anyone in the call pause and play whatever you're listening to or watching. You'll also be able to watch shows via iOS's picture-in-picture mode or you can extend them to your TV via AirPlay.Apple says SharePlay will work with Disney+. Twitch, Hulu, TikTok, ESPN+, and other services. Then there's a new screen sharing feature that lets you literally share what you're seeing on your screen with your friends, so you can show them what you're looking at online, or give them a hand with a quick instructional walkthrough if you're having trouble using an app.Messages and Notification updatesMessages, meanwhile, is getting updates in the form of a feature called Shared with You, that allows you to view all of the news articles, and videos your friends have shared with you over time in your Messages, rather than losing them amidst your stream of back and forth texts. The Photos app is also getting a Shared with You section to see photos that friends have shared with you. Apple says the only photos that will appear in your Photos app will be those that include your face, to prevent your library from becoming cluttered with screenshots and memes.Notifications in iOS are also getting updates with improved icons and a feature called Notification summary. Out of the office, you'll get notifications for non-work apps.Live Text, Photos, and moreA new Live Text feature can now capture text from photos and paste them as text directly into emails or other apps. If you see a phone number in a shot, you can tap it and call it. Apple is also adding object recognition for photos, so they'll be able to identify pets and landmarks. It's something similar to Google's own Google Lens, though Google has years of experience behind its app, so it will be interesting to see how Live Text stacks up.On the Photos side of things, there are changes to Memories that allows you to customize the look and audio behind your memories, with Apple pulling songs from its Apple Music library.Apple has also announced that it will soon allow you to put your ID in your Apple Wallet. That means, in certain states, you'll be able to use your Apple Wallet to present your license. That's a major change, and goes along nicely with the ability to use your Apple Wallet to show your car insurance when you get pulled over.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":267,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":630933049,"gmtCreate":1642658575793,"gmtModify":1642658576632,"author":{"id":"3585109808495850","authorId":"3585109808495850","name":"77663629","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3585109808495850","authorIdStr":"3585109808495850"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$8I Holdings Ltd(8IH.AU)$Never buy downtrend stock","listText":"$8I Holdings Ltd(8IH.AU)$Never buy downtrend stock","text":"$8I Holdings Ltd(8IH.AU)$Never buy downtrend stock","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":5,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/630933049","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":2191,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"9000000000000406","authorId":"9000000000000406","name":"RosalindElinor","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/bb7edeb4d97549dc1aea13d6eb260019","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"idStr":"9000000000000406","authorIdStr":"9000000000000406"},"content":"The stock market is risky and investment needs to be cautious.","text":"The stock market is risky and investment needs to be cautious.","html":"The stock market is risky and investment needs to be cautious."}],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":600319446,"gmtCreate":1638066139557,"gmtModify":1638066139870,"author":{"id":"3585109808495850","authorId":"3585109808495850","name":"77663629","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3585109808495850","authorIdStr":"3585109808495850"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"More discount coming","listText":"More discount coming","text":"More discount coming","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":3,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/600319446","repostId":"2186764328","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":414,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":842751465,"gmtCreate":1636247732197,"gmtModify":1636247733347,"author":{"id":"3585109808495850","authorId":"3585109808495850","name":"77663629","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3585109808495850","authorIdStr":"3585109808495850"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Not bad Buffett.
