Wall Street Journal","summary":"The OCC said lender has failed to fix issues first identified in 2018.\n\nRegulators fined Wells Fargo","content":"
\n The OCC said lender has failed to fix issues first identified in 2018.\n
\n
Regulators fined Wells Fargo. $250 million for lack of progress in addressing longstanding issues in its mortgage business.
\n
The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, one of the bank’s top regulators, said the lender had failed to fix problems itfirst identified in a 2018 order, in which the bank was found tohave harmed home lending customers. That order asked the bank to offer restitution to customers and improve risk-and-compliance management practices.
\n
The newest penalty is a setback for Wells Fargo five years after the bank first became embroiled in scandal for creating perhaps millions of fake customer bank accounts. Chief Executive Charles Scharf has spent the last two years trying to make nice with regulators, but a long list of penalties remain in place. The bank indicated in recent regulatory filings that its overseers were losing patience.
\n
“Wells Fargo has not met the requirements of the OCC’s 2018 action against the bank. This is unacceptable,” said Acting Comptroller of the Currency Michael J. Hsu in a statement.
\n
The regulatory rebuke specifically faults the bank for failing to develop a program for customers to avoid losing their homes, such as through loan modifications. That has caused errors that harmed borrowers, the OCC said. The penalty asks the bank to fix that program and improve its risk-management systems. It also bars the bank from acquiring mortgage servicing from other lenders.
\n
Mr. Scharf has long indicated that the bank’s transformation will take multiple years, and so far has included an overhaul of its business lines and leadership team.
\n
“Progress will come alongside setbacks,” he said. “That said, we believe we’re making significant progress, the work required is clear, and I remain confident in our ability to complete it.”
\n
The bank said that, as one example of its progress, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau allowed its initial penalty for the fake accounts to expire on Wednesday, five years after it was first put in place.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; That order asked the bank to offer restitution to customers and improve risk-and-compliance management practices.\nThe newest penalty is a setback for Wells Fargo five years after the bank first became embroiled in scandal for creating perhaps millions of fake customer bank accounts. Chief Executive Charles Scharf has spent the last two years trying to make nice with regulators, but a long list of penalties remain in place. The bank indicated in recent regulatory filings that its overseers were losing patience.\n“Wells Fargo has not met the requirements of the OCC’s 2018 action against the bank. This is unacceptable,” said Acting Comptroller of the Currency Michael J. Hsu in a statement.\nThe regulatory rebuke specifically faults the bank for failing to develop a program for customers to avoid losing their homes, such as through loan modifications. That has caused errors that harmed borrowers, the OCC said. The penalty asks the bank to fix that program and improve its risk-management systems. It also bars the bank from acquiring mortgage servicing from other lenders.\nMr. Scharf has long indicated that the bank’s transformation will take multiple years, and so far has included an overhaul of its business lines and leadership team.\n“Progress will come alongside setbacks,” he said. “That said, we believe we’re making significant progress, the work required is clear, and I remain confident in our ability to complete it.”\nThe bank said that, as one example of its progress, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau allowed its initial penalty for the fake accounts to expire on Wednesday, five years after it was first put in place.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":72,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":888012268,"gmtCreate":1631413036754,"gmtModify":1631890809101,"author":{"id":"3584302643245457","authorId":"3584302643245457","name":"5adf60a7","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3584302643245457","authorIdStr":"3584302643245457"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Ok","listText":"Ok","text":"Ok","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":3,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/888012268","repostId":"2166772293","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2166772293","kind":"highlight","pubTimestamp":1631410204,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/2166772293?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-09-12 09:30","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Can Coinbase Stock Turbocharge Your Portfolio?","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2166772293","media":"Motley Fool","summary":"It would be a mistake to blindly dismiss the opportunity this cryptocurrency stock offers.","content":"
During its brief history as a publicly-traded company, cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase Global (NASDAQ:COIN) has surpassed expectations by an incredible margin. For example, analysts believed the company would report earnings of $2.33 per share in the second quarter of 2021. Coinbase actually delivered earnings of $6.42, outperforming estimates by 176%.
\n
But according to TipRanks, analysts are extremely divided on Coinbase stock, which trades at about $260 per share as of this writing. The company generated 88% of its total revenue in the second quarter by charging fees for trades. But even though institutional investors have far more assets on the platform and trade more often, 95% of this transactional revenue came from retail investors.
\n
Coinbase needs to better monetize institutional investors, but for now, let's accept the business model for what it is. Based on the numbers we've seen, it must grow its retail investor user base to grow its core business, and it has a couple of ways to do this.
\n
First, Coinbase can grow the list of cryptocurrencies that it supports. For those unaware, there are thousands of cryptocurrencies, and each one requires particular support infrastructure. You can't just throw them up on the platform.
\n
To the company's credit, it added 22 new crypto-assets in the second quarter alone, a quarterly record. And perhaps this is part of the reason it has seen strong user growth. It had 8.8 million monthly transacting users in the second quarter, versus just 1.5 million in the same quarter last year.
\n
Second, Coinbase can launch internationally. Right now the company is working on entering Germany and Japan. It's a challenge, because every country has its own regulations regarding cryptocurrencies. However, with such a small user base, Coinbase has a shot at outsized growth by widening its net overseas.
\n
\n
Exercising optionality
\n
Many investors rightly approach Coinbase stock with great caution. Cryptocurrency has historically been volatile, motivating people to trade often. Remember: The company disproportionately profits with frequent transactions. Therefore, if trading decreases with increased cryptocurrency stability, its business model could fall apart.
\n
However, consider two things. First, potential Coinbase investors are being compensated for this risk with a cheaply valued stock. The company is very profitable and trades at just 22 times trailing earnings, according to data from YCharts, an almost unheard-of valuation for a fintech stock.
\n
Second, Coinbase is plowing its cash back into the business. According to management, its capital allocation strategy has 70% of capital invested to improve the core business, 20% used for strategic investments, and 10% spent innovating with new products. Experienced investors will recognize this last item as the desirable trait called optionality.
\n
Here are two examples of Coinbase's optionality. First, the company supports popular cryptocurrency Bitcoin. But it now has a feature called Bitcoin Borrow, allowing users to borrow money using Bitcoin as collateral. It also recently launched Coinbase Card from Visa so users can spend their cryptocurrency on everyday purchases.
\n
A more compelling example of this optionality is Coinbase Cloud. Cryptocurrencies live on blockchains, but they're not the only thing that can be built on the underlying blockchain technology. Various decentralized applications can also be built on blockchains, and Coinbase wants its cloud product to become the de facto way these are built. Management envisions Coinbase Cloud becoming like Amazon Web Services but for cryptoccurency. This could be an enormous opportunity if cryptocurrency becomes a bigger and enduring movement.
\n
A portfolio turbocharger?
\n
In summary, Coinbase stock is a risky investment, because its primary source of revenue has questionable longevity. However, one can't dismiss the company completely, because its current growth gives it the optionality afforded by its significant financial resources. Its non-transaction-based revenue has increased more than 15 times over just the past 12 months, so it's clear Coinbase is mitigating risks to its core business by developing other revenue streams.
\n
The cryptocurrency space is still young so it's hard to predict what it will look like in five to 10 years. However, if you believe cryptocurrency is still in the early innings, then Coinbase stock looks like it might be worth adding to a diversified portfolio.
\n
However, I wouldn't make a large bet on Coinbase stock today. The announcements will come just days after a federal judge ruled that Apple $(AAPL)$ could no longer prohibit app developers from offering alternate payment options beyond Apple's own in-app payment service, in a signal of the increasing backlash against the dominance of big technology companies.
\n
But the average iPhone user is likely unconcerned with the machinations of in-app payments, and they will be Apple's target audience as the company rolls out its new lineup. The phones are expected to feature improvements to camera and video functions but have a similar design to last year's models.
\n
The rumored upgrades mark perhaps more incremental improvements to the iPhone, unlike a year ago, when Apple brought 5G connectivity to its handsets for the first time and changed the phone's design. The iPhone 12 lineup has been selling well, and analysts seem generally upbeat about potential demand for the iPhone 13 family as well, despite what could be a lack of blockbuster feature upgrades.
\n
\"Given an improved economy, expanded 5G coverage, and low 5G smartphone ownership, we expect the iPhone 13 family to receive an enthusiastic reception,\" wrote Monness, Crespi, Hardt & Co. analyst Brian White.
\n
Here's what to watch for at Tuesday's event, which kicks off virtually at 1 p.m. ET.
\n
iPhone
\n
The iPhone has been the centerpiece of Apple's fall events and should be again this year.
\n
The company is expected to roll out four new phones, just as it did last year, featuring a similar design. One possible change from a visual standpoint is a smaller notch on the top of the phones, but otherwise the devices shouldn't look too different from their predecessors. MacRumors predicts that some rumored changes, like the disappearance of the Lightning charging port or the return of a fingerprint sensor, won't actually manifest in the upcoming models.
\n
Apple isn't likely to change the sizes of its phones this year, according to MacRumors, which is looking for the company to roll out a 5.4-inch iPhone mini, a 6.1-inch iPhone, a 6.1-inch iPhone Pro and a 6.7-inch iPhone Pro Max.
\n
The biggest improvements could come to the camera. Apple is reportedly planning to introduce a video version of its Portrait Mode setting, according to Bloomberg News, which would let users capture videos with blurred backgrounds. The company is also looking to add a ProRes recording capability that would allow for high-resolution footage as well as new photo-diting functions that would let people make pictures warmer or cooler, without affecting the white tones, per the report.
\n
There's also been talk of potential satellite capabilities in the next iPhones. Shares of satellite-communications company Globalstar Inc. surged after a report indicated that Apple was including low-earth orbit $(LEO)$ satellite communications so that users would be able to place calls or send messages without 4G or 5G cellular connections, but a second report suggested that Apple may limit this feature to emergency communications.
\n
Augmented reality
\n
Apple's landing page for the Sept. 14 event contained an Easter egg for iPhone users, allowing them to click on the Apple logo and view it in augmented reality on top of their surroundings. That suggests to Global X research analyst Pedro Palandrani that the company could be planning a significant AR announcement.
\n
The \"easy answer\" is that Apple would introduce a new AR feature for the iPhone, but there's \"not much to do there at this point,\" Palandrani told MarketWatch. \"I wouldn't be surprised if we get to see some Apple glasses,\" he continued, referring to the oft-discussed possibility that Apple would develop a form of AR glasses. Facebook Inc. (FB) recently unveiled its own pair of smart glasses.
\n
Whether Apple would be able to sell the hypothetical smart glasses immediately remains a question for Palandrani, given supply constraints impacting the broader consumer-electronics industry.
\n
\"Maybe they don't have the ability at this time to mass manufacture that type of device,\" he said, but in the near term, it's \"certainly a possibility.\"
\n
Evercore ISI analyst Amit Daryanani wrote that he sees \"a LONG SHOT that we finally get an AR/VR product announcement.\"
\n
Apple Watch
\n
Apple could be planning a design change to its next Apple Watch, as rumors indicate the company is looking to slightly increase its screen sizes and make the casing style more similar to what's seen on the iPhone 12 line.
\n
The Apple Watch 7 could come in 41-millimeter and 45-millimeter screen sizes, according to Bloomberg News, up from 40 millimeters and 44 millimeters currently. Bloomberg isn't anticipating any meaningful health upgrades, noting that a body-temperature scanner may not show up until next year's models come out.
\n
The devices are expected to have a flat-edged look, according to MacRumors, similar to what the iPhone 12 line sports. There were indications that Apple faced production issues with the Apple Watch 7, mainly due to the new design, but MacRumors cited a recent report from noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who said that Apple has resolved its issues and still looks to be on track with its planned launch.
\n
AirPods
\n
Apple could also be set to launch a refreshed version of its entry-level AirPods headphones. Beyond the base model, Apple offers a Pro version of the earbuds and a set of high-quality, over-the-ear headphones, and Apple may borrow some features from those as it jazzes up its regular AirPods.
\n
To start, the company is expected to change up the design a bit, putting a shorter stem on the new AirPods, similar to what's seen on the AirPods Pro. A CNet roundup notes that Apple is rumored to be planning for the introduction of spatial-audio technology to the basic AirPods.
\n
Apple may intend to leave out noise-cancelling functions on this upcoming AirPods model, per a report from Bloomberg News that came out late last year.
","source":"lsy1603348471595","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Here's what Apple is expected to announce at its iPhone 13 launch event Tuesday
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nHere's what Apple is expected to announce at its iPhone 13 launch event Tuesday\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-09-13 15:05 GMT+8 MarketWatch\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Apple looks to refocus on the iPhone after App Store legal blow\nApple is set to unveil new devices at a Tuesday event.\nFresh off a legal sting in its battle over App Store payment practices, Apple Inc...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{},"source_url":"https://www.marketwatch.com/story/heres-what-apple-is-expected-to-announce-at-its-iphone-13-launch-event-tuesday-11631480093?mod=home-page","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"2167630550","content_text":"Apple looks to refocus on the iPhone after App Store legal blow\nApple is set to unveil new devices at a Tuesday event.\nFresh off a legal sting in its battle over App Store payment practices, Apple Inc. will be looking to refocus attention back on its technology with its upcoming iPhone reveal.\nThe smartphone giant is expected to unveil its iPhone 13 lineup -- as well as new smartwatches, headphones and possibly more -- during its annual fall event Tuesday. There were indications that Apple faced production issues with the Apple Watch 7, mainly due to the new design, but MacRumors cited a recent report from noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who said that Apple has resolved its issues and still looks to be on track with its planned launch.\nAirPods\nApple could also be set to launch a refreshed version of its entry-level AirPods headphones. Beyond the base model, Apple offers a Pro version of the earbuds and a set of high-quality, over-the-ear headphones, and Apple may borrow some features from those as it jazzes up its regular AirPods.\nTo start, the company is expected to change up the design a bit, putting a shorter stem on the new AirPods, similar to what's seen on the AirPods Pro. A CNet roundup notes that Apple is rumored to be planning for the introduction of spatial-audio technology to the basic AirPods.\nApple may intend to leave out noise-cancelling functions on this upcoming AirPods model, per a report from Bloomberg News that came out late last year.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":61,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":832382462,"gmtCreate":1629591941056,"gmtModify":1633683954821,"author":{"id":"3584302643245457","authorId":"3584302643245457","name":"5adf60a7","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3584302643245457","authorIdStr":"3584302643245457"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Ok","listText":"Ok","text":"Ok","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":6,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/832382462","repostId":"1107075259","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1107075259","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1629509852,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1107075259?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-08-21 09:37","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Ignore Elon Musk’s dancing distraction and face the dangers ahead for Tesla","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1107075259","media":"MarketWatch","summary":"Investigations into automated-driving systems and the statements made about it by the electric-car company and its chief executive deserve more attention than their latest fanciful technology aspirations and timelines.$Investors$ should ignore Elon Musk’s latest dance and focus instead on the growing issues Tesla is facing because of its chief executive’s exaggerated claims about his company’s technological capabilities. At $Tesla Motors$’s AI Day late Thursday, self-named Technoking Musk said th","content":"
\n Investigations into automated-driving systems and the statements made about it by the electric-car company and its chief executive deserve more attention than their latest fanciful technology aspirations and timelines.\n
\n
Investors should ignore Elon Musk’s latest dance and focus instead on the growing issues Tesla is facing because of its chief executive’s exaggerated claims about his company’s technological capabilities.
\n
At Tesla Motors’s AI Day late Thursday, self-named Technoking Musk said that the company is working on a humanoid robot as “Tesla is arguably the world’s biggest robotics company because our cars are like semi-sentient robots on wheels.”
\n
After a white-suited human did a brief dance for the believers in the audience and on a livestream, Musk came on the stage and showed only computer-generated images of a 5’8″ humanoid robot thathe claimed Tesla will produce a prototype of sometime next year. He inferred it could be used for manufacturing or boring repetitive tasks, like grocery shopping and will have a full self-driving computer.
\n
As always with Musk and Tesla, the timeline is highly doubtful to anyone with basic knowledge of the technology in question. Fortunately, the antics did not fool everyone on Wall Street, some of whom may be getting tired of his shenanigans.
\n
“Unfortunately, as we have seen with robotaxis and other future sci-fi projects for Musk, we view this Tesla Bot as an absolute head scratcher that will further agitate investors at a time the Street is showing growing concern around rising EV competition and safety issues for Tesla,” said Dan Ives, a Wedbush Securities analyst, in a note to clients early Friday.
\n
The safety issues Ives mentions are what investors should be attuned to right now, because it appears the government is finally stepping up and taking note of a problem this column has long pointed out: Musk repeatedly oversells the current and near-term potential for his automotive autonomy advanced technology.
\n
Just a day before Thursday’s “AI Day” spectacle, two U.S. senators asked the Federal Trade Commission to investigate both Tesla’s and Musk’s “repeated overstatements of their vehicles’ capabilities”in regards to the marketing of Tesla’s “Full Self Driving” product. Tesla charges thousands of dollars at purchase (or as little as $100 a month) for software that is nowhere near full self-driving, a practice that has already led toa recent review by California Department of Motor Vehiclesanda German ruling that Tesla could not market the product as such.
\n
“Language matters,” said Selika Talbott, a professorial lecturer in the department of public administration and policy at American University in Washington DC. “The use of this terminology is false and misleading and unsafe for the general public. The notions of assisted driving and autonomous vehicles and their differences are not fully understood by the general public.”
\n
“Tesla has highly assisted technology in their vehicle, but at no point should anyone behind the wheel think that vehicle can drive itself, because it can’t,” Talbott said.
\n
The week began with news of a federal investigation into Tesla’s Autopilot system after cars using the feature crashed into stopped emergency vehicles. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is looking into a series of crashesby Tesla cars that had the advanced driver-assistance system enabled. NHTSA said that itopened an inquiry into 11 Tesla crashesthat involved emergency vehicles, while still investigating a series of collisions involving cars enabled with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and tractor-trailers.
\n
The latest outcry on Capitol Hill follows a stream of news reports and/or social media posts and YouTube videos of drivers engaging in extremely risky behavior while testing the so-called self-driving features of their Tesla. In May, Steven Michael Hendrickson,a 35-year-old father of two in Fontana, Calif., died when his Tesla hit an overturned semitruck. Earlier he had posted videos of driving without his hands on the wheel of his car on the freeway, but the NHTSA was still investigating the role of Autopilot in the crash.
\n
“The vehicles that Tesla is producing are driver-assisted systems,” said Bryan Reimer, a research scientist at the MIT Center for Transportation and Logistics. “They are assisting the driver, and the driver needs to maintain vigilance.”
\n
It is important to note the difference between Tesla’s dual products with misleading names. “Autopilot” is an ADAS system, a highly advanced version of cruise control meant for highway driving that enables “your car to steer, accelerate and brake automatically within its lane under your active supervision, assisting with the most burdensome parts of driving,” according to Tesla’s website. Tesla also offers the “FSD” package, now available by a subscription of $99 to $199 a month, which it describes as “access to a suite of more advanced driver assistance features, designed to provide more active guidance and assisted driving under your active supervision.”
\n
If only Musk described these systems in a similar manner to the official website. In analyst conference calls and in Tesla’s multi-hour long presentations to its fan base, Musk has been proclaiming that with this software, full autonomy is around the corner.
\n
“We basically have to solve real-world vision AI and we are,” he said in an earnings call in April. “And the key to solving this is also having some massive data set. So just having well over one million cars on the road that are collecting data… But I am highly confident that we will get this done.”
\n
But for all of Musk’s bluster and huge fan base, investors are starting to note that the company’s tactics involving full self-driving technology are dangerous, as opposed to the other companies that are testing autonomous vehicles.
\n
For example, Alphabet Inc.’sGOOGGOOGLWaymo, the company with the most hours of autonomous vehicle driving, is currently operating a small scale robotaxi service in parts of Arizona around Phoenix that are not densely populated, without human drivers. It is the only one of its kind in the U.S. In California, Waymo has permits from the DMV to conduct AV testing with a human driver behind the wheel.
\n
“Waymo cannot just start selling their AVs to anyone, and they can’t just drive them on the roadway, our regulatory system does not allow for that,” Talbott of American University said. “You can test them but no publicly available self-driving car is on the market for purchase because it doesn’t exist.”
\n
With FSD testing being done in the real world with untrained drivers, Tesla is conducting the equivalent of clinical trials of a new drug without any professional hourly or daily monitoring of the patient.
\n
“They are calling it beta, it is a beta system, they are exposing people to substantive risk,” Reimer said.
\n
Musk’s latest bot is yet another distraction, much like the flame thrower in 2018 sold by his Boring Company, his unwanted assistance to try and help the boys stuck in a cave in Thailand, and other projects.
