stocks during Thursday's regular trading day, as investors turned away from growth stocks in anticipation of tighter monetary policy next year.
\n
At 8:00 a.m. ET, Dow e-minis were down 117 points, or 0.33%, S&P 500 e-minis were down 24 points, or 0.52%, and Nasdaq 100 e-minis were down 153.5 points, or 0.97%.Investors' main focus this week has remained fixed on the Federal Reserve's updated outlook on monetary policy for next year, with the central bank's projections delivered mid-week suggesting the Fed could hike interest rates three times next year.
\n
Stocks making the biggest moves premarket:
\n
Darden Restaurants – The parent of Olive Garden, Longhorn Steakhouse and other restaurant chains beat estimates by 5 cents with quarterly earnings of $1.48 per share and revenue that also topped forecasts. Same-restaurant sales jumped 34.4%, higher than the 32.6% consensus estimate compiled by StreetAccount, and Darden issued an upbeat forecast. Separately, Darden announced that CEO Eugene Lee will retire in May 2022, to be replaced by current President and Chief Operating Officer Ricardo Cardenas. Darden fell 5% in the premarket.
\n
Winnebago – The recreational vehicle maker added 3.4% in premarket trading after a sizable bottom-line beat for its fiscal first quarter. Winnebago earned $3.51 per share, compared with the consensus estimate of $2.26 and revenue that also came in above analyst forecasts.
\n
FedEx – The delivery service’s shares rallied 5.9% in the premarket after beating estimates on the top and bottom lines for its latest quarter. FedEx earned an adjusted $4.83 per share, beating the $4.28 consensus estimate, with higher shipping rates helping to make up for increased expenses.
\n
Rivian Automotive, Inc. – The electric vehicle maker lost $1.23 billion for the third quarter stemming from expenses to begin production of its electric pickup truck. It was Rivian’s first quarterly report since going public, and revenue was $1 million from its first deliveries. The stock tumbled 7.9% in premarket trading.
\n
Bottomline – Bottomline shares soared 15.1% in the premarket after the fintech company agreed to be acquired by private equity firm Thoma Bravo for $57 per share in cash, or $2.6 billion.
\n
Cerner – The healthcare information-technology company’s stock soared 18.9% in premarket trading after the Wall Street Journal reported that Oracle(ORCL) was in talks to buy Cerner in a potential $30 billion deal. Oracle fell 4.6%.
\n
Johnson & Johnson – Johnson & Johnson shares fell 2.1% in the premarket after the CDC recommended that adults receive the Pfizer(PFE) or Moderna(MRNA) Covid-19 vaccines rather than the J&J shot. The CDC cited new data showing higher levels of a blood clotting condition than previously thought, although that condition remains rare.
\n
Affirm Holdings, Inc. – The “buy now pay later” company’s stock fell 2.3% in the premarket after the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau said it was launching an inquiry into firms that offer such plans.
\n
Novavax – The drug maker’s stock rose 1.3% in premarket action on a Financial Times report that the European Medicines Agency may approve its Covid-19 vaccine for emergency use as early as next week.
\n
U.S. Steel – The steel maker’s stock slid 4.4% in the premarket after the company issued lower-than-expected current-quarter guidance, with higher expenses and cautious customer buying patterns offsetting improved steel pricing.
\n
Steelcase – The office furniture maker reported lower-than-expected profit and revenue for the third quarter, with Steelcase saying its results have been impacted by supply chain issues and higher costs. the Zacks","content":"
United Community Banks (UCBI) came out with quarterly earnings of $0.79 per share, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $0.78 per share. This compares to earnings of $0.32 per share a year ago. These figures are adjusted for non-recurring items.
\n
This quarterly report represents an earnings surprise of 1.28%. A quarter ago, it was expected that this bank holding company would post earnings of $0.65 per share when it actually produced earnings of $0.83, delivering a surprise of 27.69%.
\n
Over the last four quarters, the company has surpassed consensus EPS estimates four times.
\n
United Community Banks, which belongs to the Zacks Banks - Southeast industry, posted revenues of $174.22 million for the quarter ended June 2021, surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 2.29%. This compares to year-ago revenues of $149.54 million. The company has topped consensus revenue estimates four times over the last four quarters.
\n
The sustainability of the stock's immediate price movement based on the recently-released numbers and future earnings expectations will mostly depend on management's commentary on the earnings call.
\n
United Community Banks shares have added about 0.8% since the beginning of the year versus the S&P 500's gain of 13.4%.
\n
What's Next for United Community Banks?
\n
While United Community Banks has underperformed the market so far this year, the question that comes to investors' minds is: what's next for the stock?
\n
There are no easy answers to this key question, but one reliable measure that can help investors address this is the company's earnings outlook. Not only does this include current consensus earnings expectations for the coming quarter(s), but also how these expectations have changed lately.
\n
Empirical research shows a strong correlation between near-term stock movements and trends in earnings estimate revisions. Investors can track such revisions by themselves or rely on a tried-and-tested rating tool like the Zacks Rank, which has an impressive track record of harnessing the power of earnings estimate revisions.
\n
Ahead of this earnings release, the estimate revisions trend for United Community Banks was favorable. While the magnitude and direction of estimate revisions could change following the company's just-released earnings report, the current status translates into a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy) for the stock. So, the shares are expected to outperform the market in the near future. You can see the complete list of today's Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) stocks here.
\n
It will be interesting to see how estimates for the coming quarters and current fiscal year change in the days ahead. The current consensus EPS estimate is $0.63 on $170.4 million in revenues for the coming quarter and $2.71 on $691.33 million in revenues for the current fiscal year.
\n
Investors should be mindful of the fact that the outlook for the industry can have a material impact on the performance of the stock as well. In terms of the Zacks Industry Rank, Banks - Southeast is currently in the top 30% of the 250 plus Zacks industries. Our research shows that the top 50% of the Zacks-ranked industries outperform the bottom 50% by a factor of more than 2 to 1.
","source":"yahoofinance","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
United Community Banks Tops Q2 Earnings and Revenue Estimates
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nUnited Community Banks Tops Q2 Earnings and Revenue Estimates\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-07-21 08:15 GMT+8 Zacks\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
United Community Banks (UCBI) came out with quarterly earnings of $0.79 per share, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $0.78 per share. data and looking toward Friday’s highly anticipated employment report.
\n
In the last session of 2021’s first half, the indexes were languid and range-bound, with the blue-chip Dow posting gains, while the Nasdaq edged lower.
\n
All three indexes posted their fifth consecutive quarterly gains, with the S&P rising 8.2%, the Nasdaq advancing 9.5% and the Dow rising 4.6%. The S&P 500 registered its second-best first-half performance since 1998, rising 14.5%.
\n
“It’s been a good quarter,” said Robert Pavlik, senior portfolio manager at Dakota Wealth in Fairfield, Connecticut. “As of last night’s close, the S&P has gained more than 14% year-to-date, topping the Dow and the Nasdaq. That indicates that the stock market is having a broad rally.”
\n
For the month, the bellwether S&P 500 notched its fifth consecutive advance, while the Dow snapped its four-month winning streak to end slightly lower. The Nasdaq also gained ground in June.
\n
This month, investor appetite shifted away from economically sensitive cyclicals in favor of growth stocks.
\n
“Leading sectors year-to-date are what you’d expect,” Pavlik added. “Energy, financials and industrials, and that speaks to an economic environment that’s in the early stages of a cycle.”
\n
“(Investors) started the switch back to growth (stocks) after people started to buy in to (Fed Chair Jerome) Powell’s comments that focus on transitory inflation,” Pavlik added.
\n
“Some of the reopening trades have gotten a bit long in the tooth and that’s leading people back to growth.”
\n
(Graphic: Growths stocks outperform value in June, narrow YTD gap, )
\n
“The overall stock market continues to be on a tear, with very consistent gains for quite some time,” said Tim Ghriskey, chief investment strategist at Inverness Counsel in New York. “Valuations, while certainly high by historical standards, have been at a fairly consistent level, benefiting from the economic recovery.”
\n
The private sector added 692,000 jobs in June, breezing past expectations, according to payroll processor ADP. The number is 92,000 higher than the private payroll adds economists predict from the Labor Department’s more comprehensive employment report due on Friday.
\n
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 210.22 points, or 0.61%, to 34,502.51, the S&P 500 gained 5.7 points, or 0.13%, to 4,297.5 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 24.38 points, or 0.17%, to 14,503.95.
\n
Among the 11 major sectors in the S&P, six ended the session higher, with energy enjoying the biggest percentage gain. Real estate was the day’s biggest loser.
\n
Boeing Co gained 1.6% after Germany’s defense ministry announced it would buy five of the planemaker’s P-8A maritime control aircraft, coming on the heels of United Airlines unveiling its largest-ever order for new planes.
\n
Walmart jumped 2.7% after announcing on Tuesday that it would start selling a prescription-only insulin analog.
\n
Micron Technology advanced 2.5% ahead of its quarterly earnings release, but was relatively unchanged in after-hours trading following the chipmaker’s quarterly results.
\n
Advancing issues outnumbered declining ones on the NYSE by a 1.35-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq, a 1.19-to-1 ratio favored decliners.
\n
The S&P 500 posted 20 new 52-week highs and no new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 70 new highs and 36 new lows.
\n
Volume on U.S. exchanges was 10.85 billion shares, compared with the 11.05 billion average over the last 20 trading days.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html;
