It's also providing some of the best returns, with the stock up over 2,000% since the Oracle of Omaha started buying it 33 years ago. Modern investors looking to navigate the next decade would be well-served to learn how Buffett made this profitable calculation.
\n
At a recentYahoo Finance Plus webinar, Bill Smead, chief investment officer at Smead Capital Management, began the lesson by explaining how Buffett manages growth and value in the Berkshire portfolio.
\n
\"To Buffett and [Charlie] Munger, all investing is value investing. They want to buy the bird in the hand, which is worth two in the bush. They want to buy something for well less than they think it's worth. So the ideal thing in investing is based on the mathematics of common stock investing. If you buy a stock for $30 and you pay cash, the worst thing that could possibly happen to you is it goes to zero. But the best thing that could possibly happen to you is exponential,\" says Smead.
\n
Smead explains how Buffett and Munger differ from legendary value investor Benjamin Graham and why value and growth aren't mutually exclusive. Graham would \"buy 200 cigar butts at half the price that they're worth, and through the market's movements [would] get wealthier doing that,\" says Smead.
\n
Buffett, on the other hand, wants to \"buy a business that is growing over the decades at a time when other people are scared to death or don't understand why it's going to be such a good thing over the next 20 or 30 years — and then enjoy a double whammy, which is the re-evaluation.\" Smead explains this is \"the price that people are willing to pay for each dollar of earnings growth as well as the earnings number [itself] grows.\"
\n
Coca-Cola a risky bet
\n
Berkshire first bought Coke stock from 1988 to 1989,scooping upover 23 million shares. WhenBuffett first started buying in the first quarter, many investors were still skittish from the Black Monday crash in October 1987. Buffett going big on the stock was considered risky, especially because it was not a typical Berkshire investment.
\n
Buffett defended the position in the 1988 annual Berkshire letter to shareholders with what would become one of hismost famous aphorisms. \"In 1988 we made major purchases of Federal Home Loan Mortgage ... and Coca Cola. We expect to hold these securities for a long time. In fact, when we own portions of outstanding businesses with outstanding managements, our favorite holding period is forever,\" said Buffett.
\n
Berkshire more than quadrupled the position to 100 million shares by 1994 and to this day hasn't sold any. After two stock splits, the share count is now 400 million, but Berkshire's cost basis has remained $1.3 billion since 1994. As of year-end 2020, the investment was worth $21.5 billion, a return of 1550%, not including dividends. (Berkshire owns 9.3% of all Coke shares outstanding as of 2020 year-end.)
\n
But the 1987 crash hangover had faded for Buffett, and the world was changing. The Soviet empire was beginning to crumble, and the Berlin Wall was about to topple — which it finally did in November 1989.
\n
Smead relates his own experience as a broker in the 1980s to Buffett, saying, \"Buffett [was buying] Coca-Cola in '89 at about 18 times earnings. Well, I started in the investment business in 1980 as a stockbroker at Drexel Burnham Lambert. And my first stock that I was pitching to people was Coca-Cola — $30 a share. It was at six times earnings paying a 5% dividend. When Buffett bought in eight years later, he paid six times what I was trying to pay for it.\"
\n
Smead explains how investor sentiment changed throughout the 1980s, as memories of the tumultuous 1970s faded and morphed into optimism over abull marketthat would become one of history's longest and most profitable.
\n
\"I would be destitute and living in a tent in downtown Phoenix or Downtown Seattle if I kept pitching [Coca-Cola] stock because no one would buy it. Virtually, no one wanted it. Common stock ownership in 1981 was 8% of U.S. household assets — off the charts low. No one wanted that company,\" he says.
\n
Smead explains how the changing political environment would also change the macro picture, providing new opportunities and markets for companies. \"[A] number of countries that used to be closed were going to open their doors. And the Coca-Cola corporation was going to be able to sell their beverages to a huge part of the population that they had never sold it to before. And in emerging markets and less wealthy countries, that 'clean, something to drink' was very valuable.\"
\n
New investment opportunities post-COVID
\n
In the present day, the pandemic has thrown the macro picture into upheaval again, presenting investors with a new set of challenges. Smead assesses the demographic changes afoot and sets the stage for what he believes are new, secular investment opportunities.
\n
\"We looked at the prior time when the 30- to 45-year-old-age group was dramatically larger than the previous group, the ones that preceded them. And that was the baby boomers taking the place of the silent generation in the 70s and 80s ... And we now have 90 million millennials — not too long from now, 95 million — that are going to take 65 million Gen Xers place in the 30- to 45-year-old age bracket. So that just creates a huge amount of demand for necessities,\" he says.
\n
Smead references research from Fundstrat Global Advisors that ranks the industries it expects millennials to disrupt as their spending eclipses that of boomers. \"At the top of that list is mortgage interest and finance charges. So long before it was in the news, long before it was popular to think about, we have been over-owning the homebuilders, knowing that we have years of building homes to make up the differential between demand for homes, that population will drive the existing homes for sale,\" Smead says.
\n
Smead expectsstock pickers to outperformpassive investors over the coming decade. He also sees the footwear and household furnishings and equipment industries to outperform based on the same demographic trends relating to homebuilders.
\n
\"[T]he irony of the pandemic is: It's actually catalyzed one of our most important themes, which is the necessity spending of the millennial age group,\" says Smead.
","source":"lsy1584348713084","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Why Warren Buffett invested in Coca-Cola and its lesson
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nWhy Warren Buffett invested in Coca-Cola and its lesson\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-04-30 17:56 GMT+8 Yahoo\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Coca-Cola (KO) is Warren Buffett's oldest stock position at Berkshire Hathaway. But the global automotive microchip shortage will hit production in the coming months.

NIO (ticker: NIO) is a highly valued, high-growth stock. Now NIO bulls have to decide whether solid earnings will trump the growth hiccup or whether the chip shortage can hurt the company in the long run.

NIO lost 23 cents a share on an adjusted, non-GAAP basis, from $1.2 billion in sales. Wall Street was looking for a comparable 84 cent loss from $1.1 billion in sales. NIO’s corporate gross profit margin came in at 19.5%, about 3 percentage points better than analysts projected and up from negative 12% a year ago. First quarter results look solid.

The stock isn’t moving though. NIO reported numbers at 5:30 p.m. eastern time and not a lot of stock is trading after hours. NIO shares closed down 5.3% in Thursday trading. TheS&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average rose about 0.7%.

“NIO started the year of 2021 with a new quarterly delivery record of 20,060 vehicles in the first quarter,” said CEO William Bin Li in the company’s news release. “The overall demand for our products continues to be quite strong, but the supply chain is still facing significant challenges due to the semiconductor shortage.”

Management called the chip situation “very severe” on its conference call and projected 21,000 to 22,000 vehicle deliveries for the second quarter and sales of about $1.3 billion. The Street is projecting $1.2 billion in sales. But the unit delivery guidance is a little lower than Deutsche Bank analyst Edison Yu had expected.

For the full year, Yu is modeling 95,000 deliveries. With about 42,000 deliveries likely for the first half of 2021, the resolution of the global chip shortage will go a long way to deciding whether or not NIO can reach Yu’s number.

Yu rates NIO shares Buy and has a $60 price target for the stock.

The overall quarter feels a little like Ford Motor‘s (F) quarter, which was reported Wednesday. Ford reported sales and earnings far better than Wall Street projected. Unit volumes were below the company’s internal projections, but improving vehicle mix boosted sales beyond Street projections. Ford prioritized making higher-end vehicles in the face of limited chip supply. Looking ahead, Ford said the impact of the chip shortage would be at the high end of the company’s initial $1 billion to $2.5 billion cost guidance.

Ford stock close down 9.4% Thursday, the day after the Wednesday evening report. The NIO second-quarter guidance isn’t as surprising as Ford’s. And NIO doesn’t have full-year guidance. But calling NIO’s stock price reaction is difficult.

Ford trades for less than 7 times estimated 2022 earnings. NIO is expected to become profitable on a full-year basis in 2022. Both quarters combined add up to new fiscal 2021 EPS expectations of about $5.10.\n\nData by YCharts\nApple's after-hours share price of $136 divided by a conservative $5.10 in fiscal 2021 EPS suggests a current-year P/E of only 26.8x. This is roughly in line with AAPL's pre-pandemic valuation multiple, and lower than those of tech peers whose stocks are sometimes considered \"value,\" like Facebook (FB) and Alphabet (GOOG)(NASDAQ:GOOGL). See chart above.\nJust like that, following a killer earnings report, Apple stock starts to look cheap once again – despite shares having climbed about 90% in the past 12 months alone.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":172,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"hots":[{"id":151519198,"gmtCreate":1625098100414,"gmtModify":1631890355151,"author":{"id":"3582775015485523","authorId":"3582775015485523","name":"Elleysss","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/fc575791aab67b344dbb075f41c1af57","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3582775015485523","authorIdStr":"3582775015485523"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"will it continue to go high?","listText":"will it continue to go high?","text":"will it continue to go high?","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":7,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/151519198","repostId":"1178516480","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1178516480","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1625094708,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1178516480?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-07-01 07:11","market":"us","language":"en","title":"S&P 500 notches fifth straight record closing high, fifth straight quarterly gain","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1178516480","media":"Reuters","summary":"NEW YORK (Reuters) - The S&P 500 nabbed its fifth straight record closing high on Wednesday as inves","content":"
NEW YORK (Reuters) - The S&P 500 nabbed its fifth straight record closing high on Wednesday as investors ended the month and the quarter by largely shrugging off positive economic data and looking toward Friday’s highly anticipated employment report.
\n
In the last session of 2021’s first half, the indexes were languid and range-bound, with the blue-chip Dow posting gains, while the Nasdaq edged lower.
\n
All three indexes posted their fifth consecutive quarterly gains, with the S&P rising 8.2%, the Nasdaq advancing 9.5% and the Dow rising 4.6%.

What’s more, NIO is worth about 50% more than Ford.

NIO’s conference call wrapped up about 10 p.m. eastern time. After the chip shortage, analysts focused questions on EV competition in China and NIO’s production expansion. NIO is putting in place capacity to produce hundreds of thousands of vehicles in coming years.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
NIO rose more than 5%, after falling nearly 4% before
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nNIO rose more than 5%, after falling nearly 4% before\n
\n\n
\n\n\n\n\n\n

\n\n
\n
Tiger Newspress
\n
2021-04-30 22:29
\n
\n\n\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
NIO rose more than 5%, after falling nearly 4% before.

NIO Earnings Looked a Lot Like Ford’s. Now NIO bulls have to decide whether solid earnings will trump the growth hiccup or whether the chip shortage can hurt the company in the long run.NIO lost 23 cents a share on an adjusted, non-GAAP basis, from $1.2 billion in sales. NIO’s corporate gross profit margin came in at 19.5%, about 3 percentage points better than analysts projected and up from negative 12% a year ago. Ahead of that, stock futures are pointing south, but by a less hefty amount than seen as of late.
\n
Perhaps helping out were the dip buyers who picked off beaten-down technology stocks on Tuesday, helping the Nasdaq erase a nearly 2% drop. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA had its biggest one-day drop since the February rout.
\n
But could the worst be over?
\n
Providing our call of the day, Fundstrat Global Advisors’ founder Thomas Lee zeroes in on a couple of “panic events” that he believes could signal market capitulation. That occurs when investors dump their holdings, often driven by a correction, leading to a potential bottom for stocks.
\n
In a note to clients that published on Wednesday, Lee explained those events, starting with a 40% surge over two days for the Cboe Volatility Index, or the VIX VIX. Such action, he noted, has only been seen 20 times since 1990.
\n

\n
\"Based on similar instances of VIX spikes since 1990, “unless we are entering a recession, the VIX spike is simply a panic/reset. And this washes out investor sentiment,” said Lee.
\n
His data show that since 1990, the S&P 500 has experienced four bear-market instances and 16 bull-market instances when the VIX has seen a similar two-day surge. Ahead of that, stock futures are pointing south, but by a less hefty amount than seen as of late.\nPerhaps helping out were the dip buyers who picked off beaten-down technology stocks on Tuesday, helping the Nasdaq erase a nearly 2% drop. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA had its biggest one-day drop since the February rout.\nBut could the worst be over?\nProviding our call of the day, Fundstrat Global Advisors’ founder Thomas Lee zeroes in on a couple of “panic events” that he believes could signal market capitulation. That occurs when investors dump their holdings, often driven by a correction, leading to a potential bottom for stocks.\nIn a note to clients that published on Wednesday, Lee explained those events, starting with a 40% surge over two days for the Cboe Volatility Index, or the VIX VIX. Such action, he noted, has only been seen 20 times since 1990.\n\n\"Based on similar instances of VIX spikes since 1990, “unless we are entering a recession, the VIX spike is simply a panic/reset. And this washes out investor sentiment,” said Lee.\nHis data show that since 1990, the S&P 500 has experienced four bear-market instances and 16 bull-market instances when the VIX has seen a similar two-day surge. The median forward return in those bullish follow-ups has been 1.6%, 6% and 8.7% on a one, three and six-month basis.\nThe second “panic event” also happened on Tuesday, when the NYSE Tick index, which compares the number of stocks moving up versus down, collapsed to its worst reading since 1999, dropping 2,069 points, said Lee.\n\nHe said all nine other worst TICK readings took place during bull-market periods, with the exception of 2001, though he doesn’t think markets are repeating that year, given stocks were already in a downtrend two years before that.\nHere, he highlights (circled in blue) what happens after those low TICK readings:\n\nWhile many investors might view [Tuesday’s] plunge and the surge in the VIX as a negative sign, it might surprise you but these are actually bullish signals. Foremost, keep in mind that bull markets ‘ride an escalator, and fall down an elevator,’ meaning, in a bull market, stocks rise steadily and then plunge suddenly. Thus, a VIX surge and massive negative NYSE tick reading is positive,” said Lee.\nIf a capitulation is en route, he said, investors should rotate out of tech and into so-called “epicenter recommended areas,” referring to economically sensitive companies.\nHere are 10 from his list of dozens such stocks: Advance Auto Parts AAP, motorcycle maker Harley-Davidson HOG, Wyndham Hotels WH, Prosperity Bancshares PB, Bank of New York Mellon BK, amusement-park company Six Flags SIX, energy companies Exxon Mobil XOM and GE GE, airline JetBlue JBLU and department store Kohl’s KSS.\nInflation day and ether surges\nEconomists expect consumer prices, due ahead of the open, to climb in April for the 11th straight month, and the annual rate could reach above 3.5% for the first time since 2011. It's also providing ","content":"
Coca-Cola (KO) is Warren Buffett's oldest stock position at Berkshire Hathaway.
\n
\"We looked at the prior time when the 30- to 45-year-old-age group was dramatically larger than the previous group, the ones that preceded them. And that was the baby boomers taking the place of the silent generation in the 70s and 80s ... And we now have 90 million millennials — not too long from now, 95 million — that are going to take 65 million Gen Xers place in the 30- to 45-year-old age bracket. It's also providing some of the best returns, with the stock up over 2,000% since the Oracle of Omaha started buying it 33 years ago. Modern investors looking to navigate the next decade would be well-served to learn how Buffett made this profitable calculation.\nAt a recentYahoo Finance Plus webinar, Bill Smead, chief investment officer at Smead Capital Management, began the lesson by explaining how Buffett manages growth and value in the Berkshire portfolio.\n\"To Buffett and [Charlie] Munger, all investing is value investing. They want to buy the bird in the hand, which is worth two in the bush. They want to buy something for well less than they think it's worth. So the ideal thing in investing is based on the mathematics of common stock investing. If you buy a stock for $30 and you pay cash, the worst thing that could possibly happen to you is it goes to zero. But the best thing that could possibly happen to you is exponential,\" says Smead.\nSmead explains how Buffett and Munger differ from legendary value investor Benjamin Graham and why value and growth aren't mutually exclusive. Graham would \"buy 200 cigar butts at half the price that they're worth, and through the market's movements [would] get wealthier doing that,\" says Smead.\nBuffett, on the other hand, wants to \"buy a business that is growing over the decades at a time when other people are scared to death or don't understand why it's going to be such a good thing over the next 20 or 30 years — and then enjoy a double whammy, which is the re-evaluation.\" Smead explains this is \"the price that people are willing to pay for each dollar of earnings growth as well as the earnings number [itself] grows.\"\nCoca-Cola a risky bet\nBerkshire first bought Coke stock from 1988 to 1989,scooping upover 23 million shares. WhenBuffett first started buying in the first quarter, many investors were still skittish from the Black Monday crash in October 1987. Buffett going big on the stock was considered risky, especially because it was not a typical Berkshire investment.\nBuffett defended the position in the 1988 annual Berkshire letter to shareholders with what would become one of hismost famous aphorisms. \"In 1988 we made major purchases of Federal Home Loan Mortgage ... and Coca Cola. We expect to hold these securities for a long time. In fact, when we own portions of outstanding businesses with outstanding managements, our favorite holding period is forever,\" said Buffett.\nBerkshire more than quadrupled the position to 100 million shares by 1994 and to this day hasn't sold any. After two stock splits, the share count is now 400 million, but Berkshire's cost basis has remained $1.3 billion since 1994. As of year-end 2020, the investment was worth $21.5 billion, a return of 1550%, not including dividends. (Berkshire owns 9.3% of all Coke shares outstanding as of 2020 year-end.)\nBut the 1987 crash hangover had faded for Buffett, and the world was changing. The Soviet empire was beginning to crumble, and the Berlin Wall was about to topple — which it finally did in November 1989.\nSmead relates his own experience as a broker in the 1980s to Buffett, saying, \"Buffett [was buying] Coca-Cola in '89 at about 18 times earnings. Well, I started in the investment business in 1980 as a stockbroker at Drexel Burnham Lambert. And my first stock that I was pitching to people was Coca-Cola — $30 a share. It was at six times earnings paying a 5% dividend. When Buffett bought in eight years later, he paid six times what I was trying to pay for it.\"\nSmead explains how investor sentiment changed throughout the 1980s, as memories of the tumultuous 1970s faded and morphed into optimism over abull marketthat would become one of history's longest and most profitable.\n\"I would be destitute and living in a tent in downtown Phoenix or Downtown Seattle if I kept pitching [Coca-Cola] stock because no one would buy it. Virtually, no one wanted it. Common stock ownership in 1981 was 8% of U.S. household assets — off the charts low. No one wanted that company,\" he says.\nSmead explains how the changing political environment would also change the macro picture, providing new opportunities and markets for companies. \"[A] number of countries that used to be closed were going to open their doors. And the Coca-Cola corporation was going to be able to sell their beverages to a huge part of the population that they had never sold it to before. And in emerging markets and less wealthy countries, that 'clean, something to drink' was very valuable.\"\nNew investment opportunities post-COVID\nIn the present day, the pandemic has thrown the macro picture into upheaval again, presenting investors with a new set of challenges. Smead assesses the demographic changes afoot and sets the stage for what he believes are new, secular investment opportunities.\n\"We looked at the prior time when the 30- to 45-year-old-age group was dramatically larger than the previous group, the ones that preceded them. And that was the baby boomers taking the place of the silent generation in the 70s and 80s ... And we now have 90 million millennials — not too long from now, 95 million — that are going to take 65 million Gen Xers place in the 30- to 45-year-old age bracket. So that just creates a huge amount of demand for necessities,\" he says.\nSmead references research from Fundstrat Global Advisors that ranks the industries it expects millennials to disrupt as their spending eclipses that of boomers. \"At the top of that list is mortgage interest and finance charges. So long before it was in the news, long before it was popular to think about, we have been over-owning the homebuilders, knowing that we have years of building homes to make up the differential between demand for homes, that population will drive the existing homes for sale,\" Smead says.\nSmead expectsstock pickers to outperformpassive investors over the coming decade. He also sees the footwear and household furnishings and equipment industries to outperform based on the same demographic trends relating to homebuilders.\n\"[T]he irony of the pandemic is: It's actually catalyzed one of our most important themes, which is the necessity spending of the millennial age group,\" says Smead.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":376,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":109653193,"gmtCreate":1619694037512,"gmtModify":1631892648507,"author":{"id":"3582775015485523","authorId":"3582775015485523","name":"Elleysss","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/fc575791aab67b344dbb075f41c1af57","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3582775015485523","authorIdStr":"3582775015485523"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"i love Samsung.","listText":"i love Samsung.","text":"i love Samsung.","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/109653193","repostId":"1198618278","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":197,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":109650909,"gmtCreate":1619693822201,"gmtModify":1631892648516,"author":{"id":"3582775015485523","authorId":"3582775015485523","name":"Elleysss","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/fc575791aab67b344dbb075f41c1af57","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3582775015485523","authorIdStr":"3582775015485523"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Will see Apple rise again.","listText":"Will see Apple rise again.","text":"Will see Apple rise again.","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/109650909","repostId":"1198510299","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1198510299","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1619686706,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1198510299?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-04-29 16:58","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Apple's Earnings Smasher: No Room For Bearishness","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1198510299","media":"seekingalpha","summary":"Apple delivered flawless fiscal second quarter results across its product portfolio and geographical segments.The earnings smasher was further enabled by easy comps and lingering stay-at-home tailwinds.Apple is approaching all-time highs. Both quarters combined add up to new fiscal 2021 EPS expectations of about $5.10.\n\nData by YCharts\nApple's after-hours share price of $136 divided by a conservative $5.10 in fiscal 2021 EPS suggests a current-year P/E of only 26.8x. This is roughly in line with AAPL's pre-pandemic valuation multiple, and lower than those of tech peers whose stocks are sometimes considered \"value,\" like Facebook (FB) and Alphabet (GOOG)(NASDAQ:GOOGL). See chart above.\nJust like that, following a killer earnings report, Apple stock starts to look cheap once again – despite shares having climbed about 90% in the past 12 months alone.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":172,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"lives":[]}
