This year, that Santa Claus Rally window is set to start on Monday, Dec. 27 — or the latest a Santa Claus rally has started in 11 years, due to the timing of the holidays this year.</p>\n<p>According to data from LPL Financial, the Santa Claus Rally period encapsulates the seven days most likely to be higher in any given year. Since 1950, the Santa Claus Rally period has produced a positive return for the S&amp;P 500 78.9% of the time, with an average return of 1.33%.</p>\n<p>“Why are these seven days so strong?” wrote Ryan Detrick, LPL Financial chief market strategist, in a note. “Whether optimism over a coming new year, holiday spending, traders on vacation, institutions squaring up their books — or the holiday spirit — the bottom line is that bulls tend to believe in Santa.”</p>\n<p>And if history is any indication, the absence of a Santa Claus Rally has also typically served as a harbinger of lower near-term returns.</p>\n<p>\"Going back to the mid-1990s, there have been only six times Santa failed to show in December. January was lower five of those six times, and the full year had a solid gain only once (in 2016, but a mini-bear market early in the year),\" Detrick added.</p>\n<p>“Considering the bear markets of 2000 and 2008 both took place after <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> of the rare instances that Santa failed to show makes believers out of us,\" he said. A bear market typically refers to when stocks drop at least 20% from recent record highs. \"Should this seasonally strong period miss the mark, it could be a warning sign.\"</p>\n<p>And this year, investors do have considerable additional concerns to mull heading into the new year. Though stocks closed out Thursday's session at fresh record highs before the long holiday weekend, December still marked a volatile month to start, with renewed concerns over the Omicron variant and the potential for tighter monetary policy from the Federal Reserve weighing on risk assets. Others, such as boating, grew out of surges in wealth that the stock market rally provided. As the summer travel season heats up, Americans are making new choices in where they go, when they go, how they get there and who joins them.</p><p>\"The world is never going back to the way it was,\" said Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky on an earnings call in May. \"And that means that travel is never going back to the way it was either.\"</p><p>One major trend is travelers have become more flexible about when and where they go, especially as remote work allows people to blur when they are on and off the clock. Airbnb stock rose May 24, when the company updated booking features, including an option to search for listings without fixed dates or locations.</p><p>And consumers aren't the only ones changing their habits. While tourism-dependent destinations suffered last year, the less-packed streets also showed locals the benefits of quieter communities.</p><p>Residents and local officials in normally packed hot spots like Italy and Hawaii are considering limiting the number of tourists. Such a seismic change could make visiting these places prohibitively expensive for many people. If the mix of travelers tilts more heavily toward the wealthy, travel stocks will nudge further toward luxury.</p><h2>Leisure, Travel Industry Stocks</h2><p>Shares across the sector have rebounded from last year's pandemic lows. The stocks' recent chart action is mixed. But many travel stocks have outperformed the market the past week and could present buying opportunities for investors.</p><p>Airline stocks&nbsp;like <b>American Airlines</b>, <b>United Airlines</b> and <b>Delta Air Lines</b> surged earlier this year on the Reddit stock short squeeze. Then they sold off because business and overseas travel remained weak. Since then, they've consolidated and are approaching buy points.</p><p>Cruise stocks like <b>Carnival</b>, <b>Royal Caribbean</b> and <b>Norwegian Cruise Line</b> are showing similar patterns.</p><p>Meanwhile, shares of boat makers <b>MarineMax</b> and <b>Brunswick</b> as well as RV makers <b>Winnebago</b> and <b>Thor Industries</b> need to regroup after some failed breakouts. They are no longer in buy zones but could form new bases if earnings and sales growth remain strong.</p><p>Hotel leader <b>Marriott</b> has been less volatile and is forming a base, though earnings and sales have yet to fully recover.</p><p>Airbnb stock has had a more difficult year. It surged after going public in December but began to slump in March as competition from <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/EXPE\">Expedia</a></b> rival Vrbo rental service reduced the availability of hosts. A mixed Q1 earnings report and the end of a post-IPO lockup period also weighed on Airbnb stock, which popped up 6% Thursday on higher volume but remained 35% off its 2021 high.</p><h2><b>When Luxury Means More Privacy</b></h2><p>Luxury travel, once the purview of only the ultrarich, may have won over those who might have had the means but not the need to travel lavishly. As travelers sought to avoid crowds during the pandemic, those with the means turned to options like private jets.</p><p>Arnie Weissman, editor-in-chief of Travel Weekly, says the pandemic opened luxury travel to a wider customer base. \"Some people developed a taste for it, and it's likely to continue.\"</p><p>Kim-Marie Evans, who writes the blog \"Luxury Travel Moms\" and plans travel for high-net-worth clients, told IBD she booked a trip for a family to Anguilla.</p><p>They stayed in a four-bedroom villa at the Four Seasons. AT&amp;T: High dividends are calling</b></h2><p>AT&amp;T is a Dividend Aristocrat that has been a bargain this year, but it may not stay that way for long. The telecommunications giant has lagged the <b>S&amp;P 500</b> index and is up a little more than 5% over the past 12 months, but up more than 9% in 2021. The company has raised its dividend for 36 consecutive years and currently has a yield of 6.64%.</p><p>Revenue was a reported $43.9 billion in the first quarter of 2021, up 2.7% year over year. Net income grew to $7.9 billion, up 60% over the same period in 2020, and the company's free cash flow was listed as $5.9 billion, up 51% year over year. The dividend payout is safe, with a ratio of 63.5%.</p><p>All three segments of the company's business have seen growth. In communications, the company had 64.8 million postpaid phone subscribers, up 0.76% sequentially. Revenue was $28.1 billion, up 5.2% year over year. The WarnerMedia segment had revenue of $8.5 billion, up 9.8% year over year. The company's Latin America segment had $1.3 billion in revenue compared to $1.28 billion in the same quarter of 2020.</p><p>The biggest concern about AT&amp;T is its debt. It has $160.6 billion in long-term debt, up 4% sequentially. Its annualized net debt-to-adjusted EBITDA is 3.13, compared to 2.63 last year. On the first-quarter earnings call, CFO Pascal Desroches said that the company plans to focus on paying down that debt this year.</p><h2><b>2. W.P. Carey: A raise every quarter</b></h2><p>W.P. Carey has seen its stock rise more than 24% over the past 12 months and more than 7% this year. The company's dividend offers a yield of 5.6%, with a twist: The company has raised its dividend for 79 consecutive quarters, including a bump from $1.046 to $1.048 per share in March. The diversified real estate investment trust (REIT) has 1,274 properties across 25 countries, including industrial, warehouse, retail, office, and self-storage properties.</p><p>The company has seen growth in adjusted funds from operations (AFFO) the past three quarters, though its fourth-quarter AFFO of $212.6 million is down 4% year over year. Its AFFO in 2020 was $4.74 per diluted share, down 5.2% from 2019. The company was pretty much unfazed by the pandemic -- its low came when it received 96% of contractual rent in May, but in the fourth quarter, that number was back up to 99%, followed by 98% in January.</p><p>It has not only raised its quarterly dividend for 23 consecutive years, but its AFFO payout ratio (trailing 12 months) is 88.19, conservative for a REIT.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b9522ac8783b80e9beb8eb160a591309\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"486\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">Data by YCharts.</p><h2><b>3. Sabra Healthcare: A growing trend that's hard to ignore</b></h2><p>Sabra Healthcare, a REIT that specializes in medical facilities, cut its dividend last year from $0.45 to $0.30, and has yet to raise it again. But even with that trim, the yield on the company's dividend it 6.6%. The pandemic made for a challenging year for REITs that focus on nursing homes, and Sabra -- which owns nursing homes, senior living facilities, and specialty hospitals -- is continuing to deal with the headwinds. Many people are still reluctant to live in nursing homes, and in the fourth quarter, total occupancy&nbsp;dropped to 80.2%, down 8.6% year over year.</p><p>Other discouraging numbers: The company's AFFO per share for the year was $1.74, down from $2.08 the year before. And for the fourth quarter, the company issued bleak guidance of $0.38-$0.39 of AFFO per share, compared to $0.42 in the fourth quarter of 2020.</p><p>So why is Sabra worth watching? I think the paltry 4% rise in the company's stock this year presents an opportunity because the company's fundamentals are still strong. Sabra collected 99% of its rents from the beginning of the pandemic through February of 2021. As for the dividend, it is well covered with a payout ratio of 73% of normalized AFFO per share. The company also did a good job of lowering its debt, knocking down its net debt-to-adjusted EBITDA ratio from 5.7 to 4.9.</p><p>The long-term prognosis for nursing homes is still a growth trend, as our population continues to age. The pandemic reversed the growth of occupancy for nursing homes, but not forever. In the meantime, the company's dividend is a nice reward for waiting for a turnaround.</p><h2><b>4. Williams Companies: A boon to investors</b></h2><p>Williams Companies' stock is up more than 31% over the past 12 months, and more than 21% this year. The company's dividend, which offers a current yield of 6.73% is enticing. The company has raised its dividend the past five years.</p><p>The company delivers 30% of the country's natural gas through its more than 30,000 miles of pipelines. Last year was a difficult <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> for oil and gas companies, with oil and natural gas prices down, but Williams Companies still improved its numbers over 2019 by reducing capital expenditures. Its adjusted EBITDA of $5.1 million was up 2% year over year, while its adjusted funds from operations of $3.6 million were up 1% year over year. The company's cash dividend payout ratio, while still precariously high at 87.39%, is down from where it was in 2019.</p><p>The company raised its quarterly dividend 5.3% last year to $0.40 per share, and has already raised it 2.5% this year to $0.41 per share.</p><h2><b>5: TFS Financial: Dividends you can bank on</b></h2><p>TFS Financial, based in Cleveland, is a holding company whose subsidiaries make most of their money from offering mortgage loans, though they also have savings and checking accounts. The company's shares are up more than 10% this year and more than 37% over the past 12 months. Its dividend yields 5.73% with a cash dividend payout ratio (TTM) of 45.9%.</p><p>In 2020, TFS Financial reported annual revenue of $509 million, up only 1.9% year over year, but marking the sixth consecutive year it grew revenue. It also reported annual net income last year of $83 million, up 3.8% over 2019.</p><p>The company has stressed its commitment to its dividend, which has climbed 300% over the past 10 years.</p><h2><b>Making the best of a good situation</b></h2><p>All five of these stocks are worth watching because of their dividend growth and high yields. However, of the quintet, W.P. Based on an April report from eMarketer, the company effectively controls $0.40 of every $1 spent online in the United States. It's also pivoted its online retail popularity into signing up more than 200 million people to its Prime program worldwide. The fees Amazon collects from Prime help it to undercut its competition on price. And it certainly doesn't hurt that Prime members tend to spend many multiples more than non-Prime shoppers during the course of the year.</p>\n<p>But it's the company's cloud infrastructure service, Amazon Web Services (AWS), that has truly budded into a star. Since the operating margins associated with cloud infrastructure are considerably higher than what Amazon nets from retail and advertising, AWS' growth is leading to a surge in operating cash flow. Eliquis, which was co-developed with <b>Pfizer</b>, has blossomed into the world's leading oral anticoagulant, with sales expected to surpass $10 billion in 2021. Meanwhile, dozens of additional clinical trials are underway for cancer immunotherapy Opdivo, which generated $7 billion in sales last year. This offers plenty of opportunity to expand Opdivo's label and pump up its pricing power.</p>\n<p>Another reason Bristol Myers Squibb is such an intriguing stock is its November 2019 acquisition of cancer and immunology company Celgene. Buying Celgene brought the blockbuster multiple-myeloma drug Revlimid into the fold. Revlimid has sustainably grown its annual sales by a double-digit percentage for more than a decade, with label expansion, longer duration of use, and pricing power all playing a role. This key treatment, which topped $12 billion in sales last year, is protected from a full onslaught of generic competition until early 2026. Like Amazon, it's a stock that was added to Berkshire Hathaway's portfolio by either Combs or Weschler and not Buffett.</p>\n<p>While there's no denying that Teva has its fair share of hurdles to overcome, the company's turnaround-focused CEO, Kare Schultz, has been a blessing. Since taking the helm less than four years ago, Schultz has helped shave off more than $10 billion in net debt, and he's overseen the reduction of roughly $3 billion in annual operating expenses. There's more work to do to improve Teva's balance sheet, but the company is very clearly on much firmer ground than it was back in 2016-2017.</p>\n<p>Schultz also has the potential to play peacemaker for a number of outstanding lawsuits targeting Teva's role in the opioid crisis. That's meant less in the way of interest income for banks. But the latest update from the nation's central bank suggests that interest rates could begin creeping up in 2023, a year earlier than previously forecast. Bank of America is the most interest-sensitive money-center bank. According to its first-quarter investor presentation, BofA would generate $8.3 billion in net interest income on a 100-basis-point shift in the interest rate yield curve. Translation: Bank of America's profits should rocket higher beginning in 2023-2024.</p>\n<p>At the same time, BofA has done an outstanding job of controlling its costs and improving its operating efficiency. Companies in the industry generate $180 billion in annual revenue worldwide. When compared with other entertainment sectors, that's bigger than the film industry ($100 billion) and the sports industry ($75 billion) combined. While gaming hardware being sold by <b>Sony</b>, <b>Microsoft</b>, and <b>Nintendo </b>makes up a significant percentage of that revenue, the vast majority (roughly $167 billion) is related to software sales.</p><p>There are numerous software companies in this sector, many of them private. Among the highly successful public companies on the software side are names like <b>Activision</b> <b>Blizzard</b>,&nbsp;<b>Electronic Arts</b>,&nbsp;<b>Take-<a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/TWOA.U\">Two</a> Interactive</b>, and <b>Ubisoft</b>.</p><p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/TWOA\">Two</a> video game-related investments I particularly like are <b>Sea Limited </b>(NYSE:SE) and <b>Unity Software </b>(NYSE:U). Here's why.</p><h2>1. Sea Limited is a platform company</h2><p>When Sea first began, it was a video gaming company called Garena, short for \"Gaming Arena.\" It's a virtual place to play and watch video games across southeast Asia (and now South America as well). The most famous video game the company introduced is <i>Free Fire</i>, a battle royale mobile game. It's a free game, but many addicted customers spend within the game anyway, buying additional weapons or character improvements. That's why Sea's \"free game\" brought in more than $2 billion in revenue in 2020.</p><p>As CEO Forrest Li said on a conference call, \"<i>Free Fire</i> was once again a key driver of Garena's outperformance. According to App Annie, it continues to be the highest-grossing mobile game in Latin America and Southeast Asia in the fourth quarter, as well as the full year of 2020. It has maintained the top ranking for six consecutive quarters.\"</p><p>The popularity of the game continues to astound. As Li put it, \"We're also pleased to share that <i>Free Fire</i> was once again the most downloaded mobile game in the world in 2020, according to App Annie. This is the second year in a row that <i>Free Fire</i> was ranked first globally.\"</p><p>One major difference between Sea and all its competitors is when these companies were founded. Li created Sea in 2009, which is important because it's after the introduction of the iPhone in 2007. Not surprisingly, Sea has always focused on mobile games. The major American (and French) games companies were all started back in the 20th century, and have always focused on creating games for the various hardware platforms. But what's really killing the competition is how Sea took advantage of its head start and locked in its popularity with its mobile audience, using the revenue generated to fund expansion into new revenue opportunities such as opening up an e-commerce site, Shopee, and creating a mobile payments platform, Sea Money. Now the network effect is helping to cement its position as the top internet company in Southeast Asia.</p><h2>2. Unity Software is a distributor, not a developer</h2><p>Unlike Sea and the rest of the software brigade, Unity Software does not develop any video games itself. Instead, Unity provides a suite of advanced software tools to help other companies more efficiently create video games. Unity also provides distribution for smaller studios that create fun games for our smartphones. Unity enjoys a duopoly with competitor Epic Games in that regard.</p><p>While Epic Games is best known publicly for its popular <i>Fortnite </i>game, in the industry Epic is best known for its Unreal engine, the software that competes with Unity in providing tools for game developers. While Unreal is known for its high-end computer graphics, Unity's focus has been on simpler tools that do the same thing. Because of its simplicity, Unity is generally winning on the mobile side. In the fourth quarter, Unity management reported that 71% of the top 1,000 mobile games were made on its platform. That's amazing dominance in mobile, the fastest-growing segment of the gaming industry.</p><p>As a distributor, Unity will make a lot of money in the gaming industry with much less risk than content creators face. Studios can spend millions of dollars introducing a new game and quickly go out of business if the game fails to achieve any popularity. A distributor like Unity makes its profits as the entire industry advances, earning a share of all sales from the games using its platform, whether they succeed or not.</p><p>It's the platform, in other words, that gives Unity its killer advantage. And this platform also has a powerful moat. Software developers are trained on specific tools. For a new threat to Unity to emerge, the technological advance would have to be so amazing that industry veterans would spend the time to \"go back to school\" and learn a whole new system. Right now, most software developers have a favorite between Unity and Epic's Unreal. Some are equally adept with both technologies. But few would be interested in spending months learning a third system unless they really had to do it.</p><p>What makes Unity a particularly exciting investment is that it's the leading software engine in the creation of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) games. While this is a tiny segment of the industry right now, it's expected to be massive in the next decade or two because its applications stretch beyond just gaming. For instance,&nbsp;<b>Autodesk</b> is now using Unity's tools in the architecture vertical, and <b>Volkswagen</b> used Unity's software to build an online showroom for its automobiles.</p><h2>Investor takeaway</h2><p>While there will be many winners in the gaming industry, Sea Limited and Unity are particularly strong investments because these companies enjoy powerful network effects. Indeed, both of these companies are so strong right now that they are using their leadership roles in gaming software in order to seize market share in other industries as well. The company refinanced $9.8 billion of debt in the quarter. Additionally, the company increased its revolving credit facilities by $5.3 billion to a total of $14.8 billion, which remain undrawn.</p><p>Total company backlog at quarter-end was $364 billion.</p><p><b><u>Segment Results</u></b></p><p><b>Commercial Airplanes</b></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/962725d1d62cf11f0d613a85e2304bc0\" tg-width=\"1442\" tg-height=\"326\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p><p>Commercial Airplanes first-quarter revenue decreased to $4.3&nbsp;billion, driven by lower 787 deliveries, partially offset by higher 737 deliveries (Table 4). First-quarter operating margin improved to (20.1) percent, primarily due to higher 737 deliveries and lower period costs.</p><p>Boeing is continuing to make progress on the safe return to service of the 737 MAX worldwide. In addition, we are working closely with the FAA and our customers to address electrical issues identified in certain locations in the flight deck of select 737 MAX airplanes. Since the FAA's approval to return the 737 MAX to operations in November 2020, Boeing has delivered more than 85 737 MAX aircraft and 21 airlines have returned their fleets to service, safely flying more than 26,000 revenue flights totaling over 58,500 flight hours (as of April 26, 2021). The 737 program is currently producing at a low rate and continues to expect to gradually increase production to 31 per month in early 2022 with further gradual increases to correspond with market demand. The company will continue to assess the production rate plan as it monitors the market environment and engages in customer discussions.</p><p>The company also resumed 787 deliveries in late March, following comprehensive reviews to ensure each airplane meets the company's highest standards. During the quarter, the 787 program consolidated final assembly to Boeing South Carolina and transitioned to the previously announced production rate of 5 aircraft per month.</p><p>Commercial Airplanes continues to work closely with global regulators on all aspects of 777X development, including its rigorous test program, and the company still expects to deliver the first 777X in late 2023. As previously announced, the combined 777/777X production rate is transitioning to 2 aircraft per month.</p><p>Commercial Airplanes secured orders for 100 737 aircraft from Southwest Airlines, 25 737 aircraft from United Airlines, 23 737 aircraft from Alaska Airlines, and four 747 freighter aircraft from Atlas Air. Commercial Airplanes delivered 77 airplanes during the quarter and backlog included over 4,000 airplanes valued at $283 billion.</p><p><b>Defense, Space&nbsp;&amp; Security</b></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/08af8bb2fe784a99f9d68fc882dc46c6\" tg-width=\"1440\" tg-height=\"246\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p><p>Defense, Space &amp; Security first-quarter revenue increased to $7.2 billion and first-quarter operating margin increased to 5.6 percent, primarily reflecting higher KC-46A Tanker revenue due to orders for 27 aircraft and the absence of charges related to the program, partially offset by a pre-tax charge of $318 million on the VC-25B program largely due to COVID-19 impacts and performance issues at a key supplier.</p><p>During the quarter, Defense, Space &amp; Security was awarded Lots 6 and 7 contracts for 27 KC-46A Tanker aircraft for the U.S. Air Force, a contract for 11 P-8A Poseidon aircraft for the U.S. Navy and the Royal Australian Air Force, and contracts for six Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey rotorcraft for the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Air Force. Defense, Space &amp; Security completed first flight and delivery of the F-15EX for the U.S. Air Force, successfully conducted the Space Launch System Green Run hot fire test, and began production of the T-7A Red Hawk Advanced Trainer. Other highlights for the quarter include first flight of the uncrewed Loyal Wingman aircraft for the Royal Australian Air Force and the first flight of the Japan KC-46 Tanker aircraft.</p><p>Backlog at Defense, Space &amp; Security was $61 billion, of which 31 percent represents orders from customers outside the U.S.</p><p><b>Global Services</b></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2013953631e1c36324d1a9ebb93ef24c\" tg-width=\"1435\" tg-height=\"249\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p><p>Global Services first-quarter revenue decreased to $3.7 billion and first-quarter operating margin decreased to 11.8 percent primarily driven by lower commercial services volume due to COVID-19.</p><p>During the quarter, Global Services was awarded a ground support equipment and logistics contract for the Royal Moroccan Air Force, as well as a contract for F/A-18 and AV-8B avionics equipment repair for the U.S. Navy. Global Services also delivered the 50th&nbsp;737-800 Boeing Converted Freighter and inducted the EA-18G Growler for the U.S. Navy Modification Program.</p><p><b>Additional Financial Information</b></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/de0925fbfc4862b053be330863fd24e3\" tg-width=\"1441\" tg-height=\"485\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p><p>At quarter-end, Boeing Capital's net portfolio balance was $1.9 billion. The change in loss from other unallocated items and eliminations was primarily due to increased deferred compensation and share-based plan expense as compared to the first quarter 2020. Interest and debt expense increased due to higher debt balances.
