The company warned three months back that it expected greater impacts from supply-chain issues in the September quarter than it saw in the June quarter, but the global crunch appears to have intensified since Apple last faced investors -- a recent Bloomberg News report indicated that Apple was planning to cut its iPhone 13 production targets for the year due to component shortages.
\n
In perhaps a sign of its confidence, Apple plowed ahead with numerous device launches in the past two months. The company held its traditional September iPhone launch event, which also featured Apple Watch and iPad introductions, and then it unveiled new MacBook Pros and AirPods a month later.
\n
Potential supply constraints threaten to muddy an already uneventful iPhone launch and come at a crucial time for Apple as it heads into the holiday season. Even in less dramatic times for the global consumer-electronics industry, Apple has sometimes struggled to meet holiday-quarter demand for popular gift-giving items like its AirPods.
\n
Still, one analyst saw a potential positive for Apple amid the global disruption. If the company indeed faces component shortages that will impact its ability to get devices to consumers, its rivals could be feeling the crunch even more deeply, according to Morgan Stanley's Katy Huberty. Apple gets \"preferential treatment\" from its suppliers in tight situations, she argued, positioning it potentially to win market share during this stretch.
\n
D.A. Davidson analyst Tom Forte wrote that he was \"heartened\" to see relatively quick lead times for the products Apple announced in October. He'll be monitoring for the revenue and profit impacts of supply issues on Apple's earnings call.
\n
HP Inc., one of those Apple rivals, painted a mixed picture recently as executives called out continued strong demand for the company's personal computers but noted that they expect shortages to persist into next year. The company faces a growing backlog.
\n
It has been more than a year since Apple last issued a traditional financial outlook along with its earnings report, and it's unlikely that the company will go back to its old guidance-giving ways amid uncertainty about supply dynamics. Still, investors will be looking for some signals of how the latest iPhone line has performed in its first few weeks of availability as well as for broader indications of Apple's ability to manage supply-chain disruptions in the months ahead.
\n
What to watch for
\n
Earnings: Analysts tracked by FactSet expect that Apple earned $1.24 a share in its fiscal fourth quarter, up from 73 cents a share in the year-earlier period. According to Estimize, which crowdsources projections from hedge funds, academics and others, the average earnings estimate calls for $1.33 a share.
\n
Revenue: The FactSet consensus calls for September-quarter revenue of $84.99 billion, up from $64.7 billion a year prior. The average projection on Estimize is for $87.09 billion.
\n
Analysts tracked by FactSet are looking for $41.16 billion in iPhone sales; $7.25 billion in iPad sales; $9.15 billion in Mac sales; $9.40 billion in wearables, home and accessories sales; and $17.70 billion in services revenue.
\n
Stock movement: Apple shares have fallen the day after each of the company's last four earnings reports. Shares have added 12.2% so far this year as the Dow Jones Industrial Average , which counts Apple as a component, has risen 16.6%.
\n
Analysts remain generally upbeat about Apple's prospects: Of the 43 tracked by FactSet who cover Apple's stock, 32 have buy ratings, nine have hold ratings, and two have sell ratings. The average price target listed is $167.32, which is 12.5% above recent levels.
\n
What analysts are saying
\n
Snap Inc.'s (SNAP) pain could be Apple's gain.
\n
The smartphone giant has been orienting itself as a champion of privacy, which is hurting social-media companies on Snap that have relied on the ability to track user activity and target advertisements accordingly.
\n
Users have gradually been upgrading their device operating systems to newer versions of Apple's iOS that allow for the ability to opt out of third-party tracking, and Snap expects a significant impact from the changes. Its shares suffered a record fall after its September-quarter report, suggesting to at least one analyst that Apple may be poised to benefit by appealing to advertisers itself.
\n
While Apple has clamped down on the ability for third parties to track user activity for marketing purposes, the company is also trying to build out its own advertising business, and Evercore ISI analyst Amit Daryanani wrote that the disruptions felt by Snap could help \"newer players in the market like Apple at the expense of more established competitors,\" though admittedly Apple's measurement tools may not be ideal for some in the ad market.
\n
\"Apple's recent actions may be focused on privacy, but it also creates a very favorable environment as they look to build an advertising business that we think could eventually generate $20 billion in annual revenue,\" he wrote.
\n
Advertising sits within Apple's services business, along with the App Store, which has increasingly become an area of contention. Apple takes up to 30% of in-app purchases made through its payment system, and some high-profile developers have asked for an alternate payment option. Following a lawsuit from Epic Games, a federal judge recently ruled that Apple had to allow app developers to link to other payment options, but the company is appealing that decision.
\n
App Store fees are a lucrative part of Apple's business, and the company may face questions during its earnings call about its growing antitrust pressures as well as the financial impacts of possible App Store payment changes.
\n
\"The injunction could equal a 1% revenue and 4% EPS impact for Apple in 2023 and beyond,\" Jefferies analyst Kyle McNealy wrote last month. \"Any impact will take time and won't be seen until the Jun'22 Q at the earliest,\" he continued, calling the judge's ruling \"largely a win\" for Apple since the judge declined to call the company an illegal monopolist.
","source":"lsy1603348471595","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; Operating","content":"
Apple Inc told the developer of an application that allows users to emulate the retro Disk Operating System, or DOS, that their app would be removed from the tech giant’s marketplace for allegedly breaking guidelines.
\n
What Happened: Chaoji Li — the developer of the emulator that can be used for playing DOS games among other use cases — recounted his experience with the Tim Cook-led company in a detailedblog post, firstnotedon AppleInsider.
\n
Apple's main gripe, according to the blog post, appears to be the fact that the app “executes iDOS package and image files and allows iTunes File Sharing and Files support for importing games. Executing code can introduce or changes features or functionality of the app and allows for downloading of content without licensing.’
\n
Li claims that they had disclosed the file-sharing access functionality to Apple reviewers in update notes.
\n
The developer wrote that it would not be possible to cut critical functionalities of iDOS2 in order to be in compliance with Apple’s policy.
\n
“That would be a betrayal to all the users that have purchased this app specifically for those features.”
\n
Why It Matters: As of press time, Benzinga confirmed that iDOS2 was available for sale in both Apple’s Japan and India stores.
\n
As per the iDOS2 developer, existing users should be able to download the app from purchased history but should users encounter a message that says “removed by developer,” it wasn't Li's doing.
\n
The App Store has been the center of controversy after Apple and Alphabet Inc GOOGL GOOGremoved Epic Games’ Fortnite from their respective marketplaces forviolating guidelines surrounding in-app purchasesin August last year.
\n
The controversy also enveloped Microsoft Corporation which in Maydefended one of its executivesthat testified on behalf of Epic.
\n
The iPhone maker is alsofacing antitrust investigationsin Germany for its anti-competitive practices surrounding the App Store
\n
Price Action: On Thursday, Apple shares closed nearly 1% higher at $146.80 and rose almost 0.3% in the after-hours trading.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; The company warned three months back that it expected greater impacts from supply-chain issues in the September quarter than it saw in the June quarter, but the global crunch appears to have intensified since Apple last faced investors -- a recent Bloomberg News report indicated that Apple was planning to cut its iPhone 13 production targets for the year due to component shortages.
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; The results are key for the stock to continue the momentum it has recently shown.
\n
Apple Q3 Consensus Estimates:Analysts, on average, estimate Apple will report third-quarter earnings per share of $1 on revenue of $72.93 billion.
\n
The Street estimates are conservative, Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives said in a note last week.
\n
The analyst predicates his positive expectations on the iPhone strength seen during the quarter, with a particular uptick in demand out of China.
\n
Famed Apple analyst and Loup Funds managing partner Gene Munster pencils EPS of $1.04 and revenue of $73.3 million.
\n
In the year-ago quarter, the company reported EPS of 64 cents and revenue of $59.69 billion. In theprevious quarter, the metrics were at $1.40 and $89.6 million, respectively.
\n
Munster Sees Accelerating iPhone Momentum:Apple's flagship iPhone is likely to benefit from early 5G adoption, an aging base of iPhones three years old or older and the positive impact from stimulus checks in the U.S., Munster said.
\n
He expects 33% year-over-year growth in iPhone revenue to $35.2 billion vis-à-vis the consensus estimate of $34.2 billion.
\n
Last week, UBS analyst David Vogt raised his iPhone unit forecast from 42 million to 44 million and the ASP estimate by 2% to $825. In the U.S., the analyst sees aggressive promotions from U.S. carriers helping iPhone numbers. Upside to estimates is limited by macro supply chain issues and not demand, the analyst said.
\n
Mac, iPad Bear Brunt Of Component Shortage:Mac and iPad revenue growth is likely to moderate from the frenetic pace seen in the March quarter, as component shortages serve as a drag. Munster expects Mac sales to rise 13% to $8 billion and iPad sales at $7.2 billion, a slowdown in growth from 79% in the March quarter to 9%.
\n
Services Growth Settles Around Mid-Teens:The Services segment, which accounts for roughly one-fifth of Apple's revenues, may have grown revenue by 18%, according to Munster.
\n
This is a slowdown from the 27% growth witnessed in the March quarter.
\n
\"Long-term, we expect growth to remain around 15% consistently as Apple continues to layer on more Services, including recently announced Apple Fitness+ and its podcast marketplace,\" Munster wrote in a note.
\n
Looking Ahead:For the September quarter, analysts are modeling in EPS of $1.11 and revenues of $81.03 billion. Full-year EPS and revenues are estimated at $5.18 and $354.61 billion, respectively.
\n
UBS analyst Vogt models iPhone unit sales of 227 million for fiscal year 2021.
\n
Munster is of the view Apple will remain a growth story for the foreseeable future. Over the next two-plus years, the company will benefit from the digital transformation that is in play, 5G enthusiasm and growing anticipation of new business segments, he said.
\n
The three biggest untapped markets, Munster said, are AR/MR, wellness, and the opportunity around autonomy with the Apple Car.
\n
Apple shares will approach $200 over the next couple of years, he added.
\n
Wedbush named Apple as its large cap tech name to play the 5G transformational cycle, with the one-two punch of its massive services business and iPhone product cycle translating into a $3-trillion market cap in 2022.
\n
Apple Shares Wakes Up From 1H Slumber:Apple shares ended the first half of 2021 up merely 3.6% despite stellar fundamental performance. The company underperformed most of its FAANG peers.
\n
The shares picked up momentum at the start of the July, and on July 15, hit an all-time intraday high of $150. After a minor pullback, the stock is closing in on its record high.
\n
Apple shares gained 0.29% Monday, closing at $148.99.
","source":"lsy1606299360108","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Can Apple's Q3 Results Support The New Buoyancy In The Stock?
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nCan Apple's Q3 Results Support The New Buoyancy In The Stock?\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-07-27 10:30 GMT+8 Benzinga\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Apple, Inc.(NASDAQ:AAPL) is scheduled to report third-quarter results Tuesday after the market close.
