That said, since its inception, it's down 2.1% through Dec. 16. This performance lags that of the broader market, as the <b>S&amp;P 500 </b>index has returned 9.5% and the tech-heavy <b>Nasdaq Composite</b> has gained 4.7% over this period.</p>\n<p>The Roundhill Ball Metaverse ETF is an index fund that's designed to track the performance of the Ball Metaverse Index, which consists of a portfolio of worldwide companies involved in the metaverse. That is, the computer gaming and tech giant provides the tools other companies need to create their own metaverses. Most notable among these tools is its recently launched Omniverse platform. The \"Omniverse brings together Nvidia's expertise in AI [artificial intelligence], simulation, graphics, and computing infrastructure,\" CEO Jensen Huang said last month in the company's release of its stellar fiscal third-quarter results.</p>\n<p>Roblox (No. 2) and Unity Software (No. 5) are gaming engines that can be used to create virtual worlds. They're both relatively new to the public markets: Roblox went public in March 2021 via a direct listing on the New York Stock Exchange and Unity held its initial public offering (IPO) in September 2020. Both companies are rapidly growing revenue, but neither is profitable from an accounting standpoint.</p>\n<p>Microsoft has been building Mesh, its mixed-reality platform that will power Microsoft Teams and other applications. Users will be able to access Mesh on the company's enterprise-focused augmented-reality headset HoloLens 2, as well as virtual reality (VR) headsets, mobile phones, tablets, or PCs using any Mesh-enabled app.</p>\n<p>Last week, Meta Platforms took its first leap into the metaverse via its public launch of Horizon Worlds to adults in the U.S. and Canada. Horizon Worlds is a free social VR platform in which users equipped with the company's Oculus Quest 2 VR headsets can interact.</p>\n<h2>A solid way to invest in the metaverse</h2>\n<p>The Roundhill Ball Metaverse ETF looks like a solid way for investors to get exposure to the metaverse. The drawback of ETFs is the same as their advantage: diversification. Indeed, investors willing to do some work and select individual stocks should have a decent shot at outperforming this fund.</p>\n<p>If you're looking for a larger company that's profitable, it's probably hard to go wrong with Nvidia, Microsoft, Amazon, or Apple. Meta Platforms (the former Facebook) isn't as good a bet. It has higher regulatory risk than the other big U.S.-based tech companies, in my view. Moreover, it has nearly all its (revenue) eggs in one basket because it generates almost all of its revenue from digital advertising.</p>\n<p>Risk-averse investors should steer clear of Tencent Holdings because it's headquartered in China. That leaves a considerable gap between the level to which Instagram is monetizing U.S. users versus international users.</p>\n<p>Investors shouldn't expect international revenue per user on Instagram to reach the level of revenue per user in the U.S. But what they should expect is for Instagram monetization to catch up to monetization levels of the core Facebook app in each market. And Instagram revenue per user may surpass revenue per user on Facebook, just as it's done in the U.S. where Instagram has been selling ads the longest.&nbsp;As Instagram works on monetizing users in international markets as well as it does in the U.S., it'll fuel revenue growth for Meta.</p>\n<h2><b>Still room for user growth</b></h2>\n<p>Facebook ended the third quarter with 2.9 billion monthly active users. Over time, with regular dividend hikes, even a yield that is modest when you buy the stock can become more impressive. But to capitalize on that, investors have to remain patient.</p>\n<p>Over the past five years, <b>Anthem&nbsp;</b>(NYSE:ANTM), <b>Microsoft </b>(NASDAQ:MSFT), and&nbsp;<b>Enbridge </b>(NYSE:ENB) have increased their dividend payments by more than 40%. And what's exciting is that there's still room for those payouts to climb even higher.</p>\n<h2>1. Anthem</h2>\n<p>Managed healthcare company Anthem serves more than 117 million people through all of its affiliated businesses. One of the ways it grows is through acquisitions. And in November, it announced it was buying Integra Managed Care, which serves 40,000 Medicaid members and has a focus on helping adults with long-term care needs. Last year, Anthem closed its purchase of Beacon Health Options, a behavioral health business that today serves more than 40 million people across the country.</p>\n<p>Deals like these have helped Anthem grow not just revenue but also its bottom line. In the trailing 12 months, the company has generated a profit of $5.5 billion on revenue of $133.9 billion. Back in 2016, Anthem's profits were just $2.5 billion on revenue of just under $85 billion.</p>\n<p>Powered by that growth, the company has significantly bolstered its dividend payments. At current share prices, the stock yields just over 1% (slightly below the <b>S&amp;P 500</b>'s average yield of 1.3%). While that may be modest, for long-term investors what makes this attractive is the potential for management to further boost those payouts. Anthem's $1.13 quarterly dividend today is 74% higher than the $0.65 that it was paying five years ago. Over that period, the dividend has grown at a compound annual rate of 11.7%. And with a payout ratio of just 20%, management has plenty of room to raise the dividend from here.</p>\n<p>As such, there's plenty of incentive for investors to just buy and hold shares of this healthcare stock for many years.</p>\n<h2>2. Microsoft</h2>\n<p>Tech giant Microsoft's dividend doesn't feature a terribly high yield today, either -- just 0.7%, which many income investors may scoff at. But the stock offers the best of both worlds: dividends and long-term growth. Microsoft is now worth $2.5 trillion, and its market cap has risen by nearly 450% in five years while the<b>&nbsp;</b>S&amp;P 500 has increased by 107%.</p>\n<p>Whether you're bullish on remote work, cloud computing, or video games, Microsoft has you covered with its Microsoft 365 business software suite, its Azure platform, and Xbox console. The sheer diversity the company offers is what makes it an incredibly stable and safe investment. And if it runs out of growth opportunities, it can just buy a business, as it did with LinkedIn back in 2016, when it paid $26 billion for the professional networking platform.</p>\n<p>It certainly has the financial flexibility for such moves. Over the past 12 months alone, Microsoft brought in more than $60 billion in free cash flow. That was also more than three times the $16.9 billion it paid out in dividends during that time.</p>\n<p>In five years, Microsoft has increased its dividend payments by 59%, from $0.39 to $0.62, for a compound annual growth rate of 9.7%. Yet its payout ratio sits at just 25%.</p>\n<p>Given the company's strong growth -- sales rose 22% to $45.3 billion in the quarter that ended Sept. 30 -- there's plenty of reason to expect that the dividend will only get bigger.</p>\n<h2>3. Enbridge</h2>\n<p>Enbridge is the only stock on this list with an above-average yield. At 7.1%, it almost looks too good to be true, which may lead income investors to worry that a dividend cut is around the corner. But that's not the case. This pipeline company is among the safest investments in the oil and gas industry.</p>\n<p>On Dec. 7, Enbridge announced it would be raising its dividend by 3% -- its 27th annual payout hike in a row. It will distribute 3.44 Canadian dollars per share next year, which is 43% higher than the CA$2.413 that it was paying in 2017, giving the dividend a compound annual growth rate of 7.3%.</p>\n<p>With a payout ratio of more than 100% of earnings, at first glance, the current dividend looks unsustainable. But Enbridge is a great example of a company where looking at the payout ratio alone can give you a misleading impression about the safety of its dividend. The company targets its payout to be in the range of 60% to 70% of its distributable cash flow (DCF) -- a common metric to use for that purpose in the oil and natural gas industry. DCF excludes non-cash items that do factor into earnings, but that don't impact a company's ability to make dividend payments.</p>\n<p>For 2022, the company anticipates that its DCF per share will fall in the range of CA$5.20 to CA$5.50, which would put its payout ratio based on that metric at a very sustainable 64%. Enbridge also projects that its DCF will grow at an annual rate of 5% to 7% through 2024. Over time, with regular dividend hikes, even a yield that is modest when you buy the stock can become more impressive. But to capitalize on that, investors have to remain patient.\nOver the past five years, Anthem (NYSE:ANTM), Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), and Enbridge (NYSE:ENB) have increased their dividend payments by more than 40%. And what's exciting is that there's still room for those payouts to climb even higher.\n1. Anthem\nManaged healthcare company Anthem serves more than 117 million people through all of its affiliated businesses. One of the ways it grows is through acquisitions. And in November, it announced it was buying Integra Managed Care, which serves 40,000 Medicaid members and has a focus on helping adults with long-term care needs. Last year, Anthem closed its purchase of Beacon Health Options, a behavioral health business that today serves more than 40 million people across the country.\nDeals like these have helped Anthem grow not just revenue but also its bottom line. In the trailing 12 months, the company has generated a profit of $5.5 billion on revenue of $133.9 billion. Back in 2016, Anthem's profits were just $2.5 billion on revenue of just under $85 billion.\nPowered by that growth, the company has significantly bolstered its dividend payments. At current share prices, the stock yields just over 1% (slightly below the S&P 500's average yield of 1.3%). While that may be modest, for long-term investors what makes this attractive is the potential for management to further boost those payouts. Anthem's $1.13 quarterly dividend today is 74% higher than the $0.65 that it was paying five years ago. Over that period, the dividend has grown at a compound annual rate of 11.7%. And with a payout ratio of just 20%, management has plenty of room to raise the dividend from here.\nAs such, there's plenty of incentive for investors to just buy and hold shares of this healthcare stock for many years.\n2. Microsoft\nTech giant Microsoft's dividend doesn't feature a terribly high yield today, either -- just 0.7%, which many income investors may scoff at. But the stock offers the best of both worlds: dividends and long-term growth. Microsoft is now worth $2.5 trillion, and its market cap has risen by nearly 450% in five years while the S&P 500 has increased by 107%.\nWhether you're bullish on remote work, cloud computing, or video games, Microsoft has you covered with its Microsoft 365 business software suite, its Azure platform, and Xbox console. The sheer diversity the company offers is what makes it an incredibly stable and safe investment. And if it runs out of growth opportunities, it can just buy a business, as it did with LinkedIn back in 2016, when it paid $26 billion for the professional networking platform.\nIt certainly has the financial flexibility for such moves. Over the past 12 months alone, Microsoft brought in more than $60 billion in free cash flow. That was also more than three times the $16.9 billion it paid out in dividends during that time.\nIn five years, Microsoft has increased its dividend payments by 59%, from $0.39 to $0.62, for a compound annual growth rate of 9.7%. Yet its payout ratio sits at just 25%.\nGiven the company's strong growth -- sales rose 22% to $45.3 billion in the quarter that ended Sept. 30 -- there's plenty of reason to expect that the dividend will only get bigger.\n3. Enbridge\nEnbridge is the only stock on this list with an above-average yield. At 7.1%, it almost looks too good to be true, which may lead income investors to worry that a dividend cut is around the corner. But that's not the case. This pipeline company is among the safest investments in the oil and gas industry.\nOn Dec. 7, Enbridge announced it would be raising its dividend by 3% -- its 27th annual payout hike in a row. It will distribute 3.44 Canadian dollars per share next year, which is 43% higher than the CA$2.413 that it was paying in 2017, giving the dividend a compound annual growth rate of 7.3%.\nWith a payout ratio of more than 100% of earnings, at first glance, the current dividend looks unsustainable. But Enbridge is a great example of a company where looking at the payout ratio alone can give you a misleading impression about the safety of its dividend. The company targets its payout to be in the range of 60% to 70% of its distributable cash flow (DCF) -- a common metric to use for that purpose in the oil and natural gas industry. DCF excludes non-cash items that do factor into earnings, but that don't impact a company's ability to make dividend payments.\nFor 2022, the company anticipates that its DCF per share will fall in the range of CA$5.20 to CA$5.50, which would put its payout ratio based on that metric at a very sustainable 64%. Enbridge also projects that its DCF will grow at an annual rate of 5% to 7% through 2024. Its platform revenue (primarily Roku's share of subscription and advertising sales on its platform), which accounts for more than 85% of its total revenue, increased 82% year over year.</p>\n<p>Roku is also hitting a tipping point in its operating leverage -- its adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) is soaring even faster than revenue. Adjusted EBITDA in the third quarter of 2021 surged 132% year over year, climbing from $56.2 million in the year-ago period to $130 million.</p>\n<p>Of course, there are risks Roku investors should be aware of. If competition intensifies, the company's long-term growth potential could become more uncertain. Tesla’s website, which still takes fully refundable $100 deposits for the Cybertruck, says “you will be able to complete your configuration as production nears in 2022.” I would not be surprised if this timeline slips further.</p>\n<p><b>SEMI</b></p>\n<p>Musk unveiled the Semi truck four years ago, in November 2017. Musk has suggested the Semi is on hold until Tesla can make or source a new type of battery cell in high volume. The new, larger 4680 battery cells were one of the big highlights of Tesla’s “Battery Day” last year. Tesla is making the 4680s on a pilot line in Fremont, but also plans to procure them from long-time supplier Panasonic. In its third quarter earnings release, Tesla said that “the 4680 in-house cell project continues to progress. We are producing an increasing number of battery packs for testing purposes, and so far, the test results meet our current expectations.” That sounds promising, but volume production remains a work in progress.</p>\n<p><b>ROADSTER</b></p>\n<p>The big reveal at the Semi event in November 2017 was chief designer Franz von Holzhausen driving the next-generation Roadster out of the back of the Semi. Adobe has recently&nbsp;reported&nbsp;that Black Friday activity online dropped year-over-year for the first time ever. Online sales reached $8.9 billion, lower than 2020’s $9 billion.</p>\n<p>Without context, these numbers may look concerning. But once again, there is nothing typical about this COVID-19 crisis. Black Friday likely suffered from (1) consumers buying earlier than usual, to avoid delayed deliveries in late November and December, and (2) supply chain constraints causing shortages and missed sales opportunities.</p>\n<p><b>Apple could do better than average</b></p>\n<p>The demand scenario described above is at least modestly optimistic, in my view, even if not without challenges on the supply side. Even so, I think that Apple has a good chance of performing better than average in the next few weeks.</p>\n<p>For starters, the Cupertino company is&nbsp;one of the best in the world at managing inventory&nbsp;and supply chain. Consider, however, that CEO Tim Cook&nbsp;has already warned of an impact&nbsp;of $6 billion to revenues in the holiday quarter caused by the production and logistics bottlenecks.</p>\n<p>Second, the demand for Apple’s products and services seems unshaken.I have discussed a few times that the iPhone, for example, is likely to have its best years of sales ever in fiscal 2021 and 2022. Not even the tough comps introduced by the first 5G-capable model will likely be enough to steal the thunder of a well-received iPhone 13.</p>\n<p><b>But how about AAPL stock?</b></p>\n<p>Keep in mind that financial performance, especially in the short term, does not always correlate with share price movements. In fact, any impact that the holiday P&amp;L results may have on Apple stock would likely not happen until late January 2022, when the company reports fiscal Q1 earnings.</p>\n<p>For the immediate term, Apple investors should keep in mind that the stock’s&nbsp;seasonal patterns have been historically unfavorable&nbsp;around this time of the year. The chart below shows that AAPL has clearly underperformed in November through January. Will this time be any different? You might decide that one or more of this ETF's holdings are worth further exploration or that you want to buy the ETF itself.</p>\n<h2>Roundhill Ball Metaverse ETF: Performance and the basics</h2>\n<p>This ETF only began trading on June 30, 2021, so it's too soon to make any judgments about its performance. That said, since its inception, it's down 2.1% through Dec. 16. This performance lags that of the broader market, as the <b>S&amp;P 500 </b>index has returned 9.5% and the tech-heavy <b>Nasdaq Composite</b> has gained 4.7% over this period.</p>\n<p>The Roundhill Ball Metaverse ETF is an index fund that's designed to track the performance of the Ball Metaverse Index, which consists of a portfolio of worldwide companies involved in the metaverse. It had 40 holdings as of Dec. 16. Data to Dec. 16, 2021.</p>\n<p>Below is a brief look at how the top five companies in this ETF are involved in the metaverse.</p>\n<p>Nvidia is a \"pick-and-shovel\" play on the metaverse. That is, the computer gaming and tech giant provides the tools other companies need to create their own metaverses. Most notable among these tools is its recently launched Omniverse platform. The \"Omniverse brings together Nvidia's expertise in AI [artificial intelligence], simulation, graphics, and computing infrastructure,\" CEO Jensen Huang said last month in the company's release of its stellar fiscal third-quarter results.</p>\n<p>Roblox (No. 2) and Unity Software (No. 5) are gaming engines that can be used to create virtual worlds. They're both relatively new to the public markets: Roblox went public in March 2021 via a direct listing on the New York Stock Exchange and Unity held its initial public offering (IPO) in September 2020. Both companies are rapidly growing revenue, but neither is profitable from an accounting standpoint.</p>\n<p>Microsoft has been building Mesh, its mixed-reality platform that will power Microsoft Teams and other applications. Users will be able to access Mesh on the company's enterprise-focused augmented-reality headset HoloLens 2, as well as virtual reality (VR) headsets, mobile phones, tablets, or PCs using any Mesh-enabled app.</p>\n<p>Last week, Meta Platforms took its first leap into the metaverse via its public launch of Horizon Worlds to adults in the U.S. and Canada. Horizon Worlds is a free social VR platform in which users equipped with the company's Oculus Quest 2 VR headsets can interact.</p>\n<h2>A solid way to invest in the metaverse</h2>\n<p>The Roundhill Ball Metaverse ETF looks like a solid way for investors to get exposure to the metaverse. The drawback of ETFs is the same as their advantage: diversification. Indeed, investors willing to do some work and select individual stocks should have a decent shot at outperforming this fund.</p>\n<p>If you're looking for a larger company that's profitable, it's probably hard to go wrong with Nvidia, Microsoft, Amazon, or Apple. Meta Platforms (the former Facebook) isn't as good a bet. It has higher regulatory risk than the other big U.S.-based tech companies, in my view. Moreover, it has nearly all its (revenue) eggs in one basket because it generates almost all of its revenue from digital advertising.</p>\n<p>Risk-averse investors should steer clear of Tencent Holdings because it's headquartered in China. Market size projections for the metaverse vary widely, so suffice it to say this space is poised to be massive.\nLet's take a look at the Roundhill Ball Metaverse ETF (NYSEMKT:META), the world's first metaverse exchange-traded fund (ETF). You might decide that one or more of this ETF's holdings are worth further exploration or that you want to buy the ETF itself.\nRoundhill Ball Metaverse ETF: Performance and the basics\nThis ETF only began trading on June 30, 2021, so it's too soon to make any judgments about its performance. That said, since its inception, it's down 2.1% through Dec. 16. This performance lags that of the broader market, as the S&P 500 index has returned 9.5% and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite has gained 4.7% over this period.\nThe Roundhill Ball Metaverse ETF is an index fund that's designed to track the performance of the Ball Metaverse Index, which consists of a portfolio of worldwide companies involved in the metaverse. The \"Omniverse brings together Nvidia's expertise in AI [artificial intelligence], simulation, graphics, and computing infrastructure,\" CEO Jensen Huang said last month in the company's release of its stellar fiscal third-quarter results.\nRoblox (No. 2) and Unity Software (No. 5) are gaming engines that can be used to create virtual worlds. They're both relatively new to the public markets: Roblox went public in March 2021 via a direct listing on the New York Stock Exchange and Unity held its initial public offering (IPO) in September 2020. Horizon Worlds is a free social VR platform in which users equipped with the company's Oculus Quest 2 VR headsets can interact.\nA solid way to invest in the metaverse\nThe Roundhill Ball Metaverse ETF looks like a solid way for investors to get exposure to the metaverse. The drawback of ETFs is the same as their advantage: diversification. Indeed, investors willing to do some work and select individual stocks should have a decent shot at outperforming this fund.\nIf you're looking for a larger company that's profitable, it's probably hard to go wrong with Nvidia, Microsoft, Amazon, or Apple. Meta Platforms (the former Facebook) isn't as good a bet. It has higher regulatory risk than the other big U.S.-based tech companies, in my view.
