purposes.The U.S. government will share the majority of its donated Covid-19 vaccine doses through COVAX, the World Health Organization-led program that provides shots to countries in need, the White House announced Thursday.The Biden administration has committed to donating at least 20 million doses of Covid vaccines produced byPfizer-BioNTech,ModernaandJohnson & Johnsonas well as 60 million doses of AstraZeneca's vaccines, which has not yet been authorized for use in the United States.The U.S. plans to allocate 75% of the vaccines through the COVAX global vaccine sharing program, the White House in an email. Of the first 25 million doses, about 6 million will go to countries in South and Central America, 7 million to Asia and 5 million to Africa, the White House said. Still, it’s not clear that any new rally will have much lasting power. An even more serious U.S. market decline cannot be ruled out over the coming couple of months.</p>\n<p>For now, the recent decline appears to have been quite modest by historical standards, smaller even than what satisfies the semi-official definition of a correction as a 10% decline. Before Thursday’s big rally, the Dow Jones Industrial AverageDJIA,0.85%had fallen around 1,200 points from its previous all-time high, or 3.4%. The S&amp;P 500SPX,0.98%was 4.0% below its high, and the Nasdaq CompositeCOMP,1.13%was down 7.8%.</p>\n<p>Consider how the Nasdaq-focused market timers reacted to these declines. As you can see from the chart below, their average recommended equity exposure (as represented by the Hulbert Nasdaq Newsletter Sentiment Index, or HNNSI) fell to minus 10.7%. That means that the Nasdaq-focused market timers are now recommending that their clients allocate an average of 10.7% of their equity trading portfolios to going short. As recently as April 29, this average exposure level stood at plus 83.6%.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d550f647619d600d419397967f7bb778\" tg-width=\"1260\" tg-height=\"928\"></p>\n<p>That reflects a remarkably quick rush for the exits — 94.3 percentage points in just 10 trading sessions. In fact, out of the 5,000+ trading days since 2000, there have been only 18 — 0.3% — in which the HNNSI’s decline over the trailing 10 days was greater.</p>\n<p>To appreciate the contrarian significance of this, consider that, on average following those past few occasions when the HNNSI declined by this much and this fast, the Nasdaq Composite was 5.3% higher in one month’s time.</p>\n<p>Why, then, haven’t the contrarians become more bullish? The answer is also evident in the chart: The HNNSI’s plunge over the past 10 days stopped well short of the excessive bearish zone, defined as being in the bottom 10% of the historical distribution. That zone is represented by the beige-shaded box at the bottom of the chart.</p>\n<p>The last time the HNNSI fell into that zone was in March 2020. That was when the market’s “wall of worry” became incredibly strong and was able to support an impressive rally. That wall today is not as strong.</p>\n<p>The sentiment picture that the recent data are painting shows the market timers to be trigger-happy. They are quick to jump on the bullish bandwagon when the market rallies, and then jump on the bearish bandwagon when the market declines. As a result, both rallies and declines tend to be short-lived.</p>\n<p>A longer-lasting rally will require more extreme bearishness among the market timers, and for them to stubbornly hold onto their bearishness in the wake of the rally’s initial liftoff. Except for that to happen, the market to itself most likely would have to suffer a worse decline than we’ve experienced in recent days. Still, it’s not clear that any new rally will have much lasting power. An even more serious U.S. market decline cannot be ruled out over the coming couple of months.\nFor now, the recent decline appears to have been quite modest by historical standards, smaller even than what satisfies the semi-official definition of a correction as a 10% decline. Before Thursday’s big rally, the Dow Jones Industrial AverageDJIA,0.85%had fallen around 1,200 points from its previous all-time high, or 3.4%. The S&P 500SPX,0.98%was 4.0% below its high, and the Nasdaq CompositeCOMP,1.13%was down 7.8%.\nConsider how the Nasdaq-focused market timers reacted to these declines. As you can see from the chart below, their average recommended equity exposure (as represented by the Hulbert Nasdaq Newsletter Sentiment Index, or HNNSI) fell to minus 10.7%. That means that the Nasdaq-focused market timers are now recommending that their clients allocate an average of 10.7% of their equity trading portfolios to going short. As recently as April 29, this average exposure level stood at plus 83.6%.\n\nThat reflects a remarkably quick rush for the exits — 94.3 percentage points in just 10 trading sessions. In fact, out of the 5,000+ trading days since 2000, there have been only 18 — 0.3% — in which the HNNSI’s decline over the trailing 10 days was greater.\nTo appreciate the contrarian significance of this, consider that, on average following those past few occasions when the HNNSI declined by this much and this fast, the Nasdaq Composite was 5.3% higher in one month’s time.\nWhy, then, haven’t the contrarians become more bullish? The answer is also evident in the chart: The HNNSI’s plunge over the past 10 days stopped well short of the excessive bearish zone, defined as being in the bottom 10% of the historical distribution. That zone is represented by the beige-shaded box at the bottom of the chart.\nThe last time the HNNSI fell into that zone was in March 2020. That was when the market’s “wall of worry” became incredibly strong and was able to support an impressive rally. The president addresses a joint session of Congress Wednesday evening.It’s a huge week for earnings with about a third of the S&P 500 reporting, including Big Tech names, such as Apple,Microsoft,Alphabet and Amazon.As many have already done, firms like Boeing, Ford,Caterpillar and McDonald’s, are likely to detail cost pressures they are facing from rising materials and transportation costs and supply chain disruptions.At the same time, the Fed is expected to defend its policy of letting inflation run hot, while assuring markets it sees the pick-up in prices as only temporary. The central bank meets on Tuesday and Wednesday.The central bank takes the main stage“I think the Fed would like not to be a feature next week, but the Fed will be forced from the background because of concerns about inflation,” said Diane Swonk, chief economist at Grant Thornton.The central bank is not expected to make any policy moves, but Fed Chairman Jerome Powell’s press briefing following the meeting Wednesday will be closely watched.So far, the barrage of earnings news has been positive, with 86% of companies reporting earnings beats. Corporate profits are expected to be up about 33.9% for the first quarter, based on estimates and actual reports, according to Refinitiv. Revenues are about 9.9% higher.There is important inflation data Friday when the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge is reported.The personal consumption expenditure report is expected to show a 1.8% rise in core inflation, still below the Fed’s target of 2%. Other data releases include the first-quarter gross domestic product on Thursday, which is expected to have grown by 6.5%, according to Dow Jones.“I think the Fed has no urgency to shift monetary policy at this point,” said Ian Lyngen, head of U.S. rates strategy at BMO. “The Fed needs to acknowledge that the data is improving. We had a strong first quarter.”“The Fed needs to acknowledge that but at the same time they’re keeping extremely accommodative policy in place, so they’ll have to make a note to the fact that the easy policy is warranted,” he said.Lyngen said the Fed will likely point to continued concerns about the pandemic globally as a potential risk to the economic recovery.Powell is also expected to once more explain that the Fed will let inflation rise above its 2% target for a period of time before it raises rates so that the economy can have more time to heal. “It’s going to be a challenge for the Fed,” said Swonk.The base effects for the next several months will make inflation appear to have jumped sharply because of the comparison to a weak period last year. The Dow was off just shy of 0.5% at 34,043.Tax hike prospectsStocks were hit hard on Thursday when after a news report said that Biden is expected to propose a capital gains tax rate of 39.6% for people earning more than $1 million a year.Combined with the 3.8% net investment income tax, the new levy would more than double the long term capital gains rate of 20% or the richest Americans.Strategists said Biden is expected to propose raising the income tax rate for those earning more than $400,000.“I think a lot of people are starting to price in the risk there going to be a significant increase in both corporate and capital gains taxes,” said Lyngen.So far, companies have not provided much in the way of commentary on the proposed hike in corporate taxes to 28% from 21% but they have been talking about other costs.David Bianco, chief investment strategist for the Americas at DWS, said he expects larger companies will do better dealing with supply chain constraints than smaller ones. Big Tech is also likely to fare better during the semiconductor shortage than auto makers, which have already announced production shutdowns, he said.“Next week is tech week. I think we’re going to get down on our knees and just be in awe of their business models and their ability to grow at a behemoth scale,” Bianco said.He said he’s not in favor of Wall Street’s popular trade into cyclicals and out of growth. He still favors growth.“We’re overweight equities really because we’re concerned about rising interest rates,” Bianco said. “I’m not bullish in that I expect the market to rise that much from here.”“We stuck with growth and dug deeper into bond substitutes, utilities, staples, real estate,” he said, adding he is underweight industrials, energy and materials. “Energy is doomed. It’s being nationalized via regulation. As momentum slowly fades away, we believe that the upside in Virgin Galactic stock is limited and it's better to avoid it at this stage.</p>\n<p><b>From Hero to Zero</b></p>\n<p>Virgin Galactic went from one of the hottest SPACs on the market to one of the worst-performing stocks in recent months. After publishing ourarticleon the company titled&nbsp;<i>Virgin Galactic: This May Not End Well</i>&nbsp;on February 15, the company's stock began to rapidly depreciate and now it's down over 50% since that time. The major reason behind the decline was the decision of Virgin Galactic to postpone its test flight from February to May.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e2534069a5396714f1d462dd4b161875\" tg-width=\"1280\" tg-height=\"443\"><span>Chart: Seeking Alpha</span></p>\n<p>At this stage, Virgin Galactic's major goal is to make space tourism a reality and the company has a long-term goal of launching 400 space flights in a year. The company also says that it has 600 firm reservations, which cost $250,000 each. However, despite such an ambitious goal, there's no guarantee that Virgin Galactic will be able to achieve it since the company is still in the pre-revenue stage and it burns a significant amount of cash every quarter in order to stay afloat. While in&nbsp;Q3&nbsp;Virgin Galactic had $742 million in liquidity, in&nbsp;Q4&nbsp;its cash reserves declined to $666 million. In Q3 its adjusted EBITDA and a net loss were -$66 million and -$77 million, respectively, and in Q4 its adjusted EBITDA and a net loss were -$60 million and -$74 million, respectively. With such a poor financial performance and weak outlook, investors of Virgin Galactic should forget about the improvement of earnings, as the cash burn will likely continue.</p>\n<p>The major problem of Virgin Galactic is that after being in the business for a couple of decades the company still hasn't entered a commercialization stage and with each postponement of its flights' investors begin to worry whether the business will be able to create any value at all in the long term. Earlier this year Virgin Galactic once again delayed its plan tooffercommercial space flights to 2022, but no one can say with certainty whether that's going to happen or not. We should not forget that the company experienced a major setback in 2014 when its spaceship broke apart in the air and it took it a few years to restart its space program. On top of that, Virgin Galactic hasn't done any test flights for more than two years, as its latest test flights were conducted in late 2018 and early 2019. Therefore, it's safe to assume that if Virgin Galactic decides to postpone its upcoming test flight again, then it's unlikely that it'll be able to offer commercial space flights in the next couple of years.</p>\n<p>Another downside of Virgin Galactic is that it competes in an industry that's only in its infancy and therefore the ability to monetize its operations is minimal at this stage, while the risks are enormous. According to variousreports, the space tourism business is going to be worth only $1.3 billion by 2025, so it's hard to justify Virgin Galactic's current ~$5 billion valuation, especially since it doesn't make any money at all. Considering this, it's safe to say that despite the ambitious goals the company is extremely overvalued at the current price.</p>\n<p>On top of that, another major concern is heavy insider selling in recent months. The datashowsthat in the last 12 months Virgin Galactic insiders purchased only $239,260 worth of the company's shares, while at the same time they sold over $772 million worth of shares. Just recently it was announced that Virgin Galactic's founder and CEO Richard Branson alonesold$150 million worth of shares at an average price of over $25 per share, while the company's other major backer Chamath Palihapitiyasoldhis personal stake in the business as well. In addition, Cathie Wood has beentrimmingher Virgin Galactic stake from her ARK Space ETF(BATS:ARKX)and the company currently has only 1% weight in the ETF's portfolio.</p>\n<p>Considering all of this, we stick to our opinion that Virgin Galactic is nothing more than a gambling stock at this time. The company already trades at a significant premium to the overall space tourism industry even though it doesn't make any revenues at all. As a result, it's safe to assume that the cash burn will continue, and if the company once again delays its test flight in May, it might be forced to push its commercialization plans for a later date. In addition, as the company's major backers are trimming their stakes in the business, we find it hard to justify buying Virgin Galactic's shares, especially at the current overvalued price. Also, since the stock currently has a short interest ofonly16%, it's very unlikely that we'll see another short squeeze happening anytime soon, as the momentum is not there anymore and short-sellers are not shorting a significant number of shares. The president addresses a joint session of Congress Wednesday evening.It’s a huge week for earnings with about a third of the S&P 500 reporting, including Big Tech names, such as Apple,Microsoft,Alphabet and Amazon.As many have already done, firms like Boeing, Ford,Caterpillar and McDonald’s, are likely to detail cost pressures they are facing from rising materials and transportation costs and supply chain disruptions.At the same time, the Fed is expected to defend its policy of letting inflation run hot, while assuring markets it sees the pick-up in prices as only temporary. The central bank meets on Tuesday and Wednesday.The central bank takes the main stage“I think the Fed would like not to be a feature next week, but the Fed will be forced from the background because of concerns about inflation,” said Diane Swonk, chief economist at Grant Thornton.The central bank is not expected to make any policy moves, but Fed Chairman Jerome Powell’s press briefing following the meeting Wednesday will be closely watched.So far, the barrage of earnings news has been positive, with 86% of companies reporting earnings beats. Corporate profits are expected to be up about 33.9% for the first quarter, based on estimates and actual reports, according to Refinitiv. Revenues are about 9.9% higher.There is important inflation data Friday when the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge is reported.The personal consumption expenditure report is expected to show a 1.8% rise in core inflation, still below the Fed’s target of 2%. Other data releases include the first-quarter gross domestic product on Thursday, which is expected to have grown by 6.5%, according to Dow Jones.“I think the Fed has no urgency to shift monetary policy at this point,” said Ian Lyngen, head of U.S. rates strategy at BMO. “The Fed needs to acknowledge that the data is improving. We had a strong first quarter.”“The Fed needs to acknowledge that but at the same time they’re keeping extremely accommodative policy in place, so they’ll have to make a note to the fact that the easy policy is warranted,” he said.Lyngen said the Fed will likely point to continued concerns about the pandemic globally as a potential risk to the economic recovery.Powell is also expected to once more explain that the Fed will let inflation rise above its 2% target for a period of time before it raises rates so that the economy can have more time to heal. “It’s going to be a challenge for the Fed,” said Swonk.The base effects for the next several months will make inflation appear to have jumped sharply because of the comparison to a weak period last year. The consumer price index for April could be above 3%, compared to 2.6% last month, Swonk added.“The Fed is trying to let a lot more people get out onto the dance floor before it calls ‘last call,’” she said. “Really what Powell has been saying since day one is if we take care of people on the margins and bring them back into the labor force, the rest will take care of itself.”Stocks were slightly lower in the past week, and Treasury yields held at lower levels. The 10-year yield,which moves opposite price, was at 1.55% Friday.The S&P 500was down 0.1%, ending the week at 4,180, while Nasdaq Composite was down nearly 0.3% at 14,016. The Dow was off just shy of 0.5% at 34,043.Tax hike prospectsStocks were hit hard on Thursday when after a news report said that Biden is expected to propose a capital gains tax rate of 39.6% for people earning more than $1 million a year.Combined with the 3.8% net investment income tax, the new levy would more than double the long term capital gains rate of 20% or the richest Americans.Strategists said Biden is expected to propose raising the income tax rate for those earning more than $400,000.“I think a lot of people are starting to price in the risk there going to be a significant increase in both corporate and capital gains taxes,” said Lyngen.So far, companies have not provided much in the way of commentary on the proposed hike in corporate taxes to 28% from 21% but they have been talking about other costs.David Bianco, chief investment strategist for the Americas at DWS, said he expects larger companies will do better dealing with supply chain constraints than smaller ones. Big Tech is also likely to fare better during the semiconductor shortage than auto makers, which have already announced production shutdowns, he said.“Next week is tech week. I think we’re going to get down on our knees and just be in awe of their business models and their ability to grow at a behemoth scale,” Bianco said.He said he’s not in favor of Wall Street’s popular trade into cyclicals and out of growth. He still favors growth.“We’re overweight equities really because we’re concerned about rising interest rates,” Bianco said. “I’m not bullish in that I expect the market to rise that much from here.”“We stuck with growth and dug deeper into bond substitutes, utilities, staples, real estate,” he said, adding he is underweight industrials, energy and materials. “Energy is doomed. It’s being nationalized via regulation. I do like industrials, they are well-run companies, but I do think infrastructure spending expectations for classic infrastructure are too high.”He also said industrials are good businesses, but the stocks have become overvalued.Bianco said he likes big box stores, but smaller retailers are facing big challenges that were already impacting them prior to Covid. He also finds small biotech firms attractive.“I like healthcare stocks. Those valuations are reasonable. People have been paranoid about politicians beating on them since 1992. In fact, fund flows are a contrarian indicator: the U.S. stock market in the past has performed better when there is a net outflow of cash.</p><p>The evidence is summarized in the chart below, which plots net inflows of cash to U.S. stock funds (both open-end and exchange-traded funds) by year over the past decade. Notice that in all but two of the years since 2010 there have been net outflows.</p><p><b>Reversal</b></p><p>Net flows into U.S. equity (open-endded funds and ETF), in billions</p><p></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0c9c4ef1e3533acd3d248af32cdf728f\" tg-width=\"780\" tg-height=\"308\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p><p>This 2010-2020 period was extremely strong for U.S. stocks. Yet over this time U.S. stock funds experienced a net outflow of $741 billion. (Data are from TrimTabs, a part of EPFR, a division of Informa Financial Intelligence.)</p><p>This year so far is seeing a major reversal of this longer-term trend. For the first four months of this year, according to TrimTabs, U.S. equity funds have received net inflows of $142.3 billion. If this pace were to continue for the full year, there would be $427 billion of net inflows in 2021 — retracing more than half the total outflow from 2010 through 2020.</p><p>One study that puts this huge year-to-date inflow in a bearish light appeared last December in the Review of Finance. Entitled “ETF Arbitrage, Non-Fundamental Demand, and Return Predictability,” the study was conducted by David Brown of the University of Arizona, Shaun William Davies of the University of Colorado Boulder and Matthew Ringgenberg of the University of Utah. The researchers found that, on average, the ETFs with the biggest outflows outperformed the ETFs with the biggest inflows for up to a year after these extreme flows.</p><p>Another academic study that reached a similar conclusion has been circulating since January. Entitled “Competition for Attention in the ETF Space,” the study was conducted by Itzhak Ben-David and Byungwook Kim of Ohio State University, Francesco Franzoni of the University of Lugano in Switzerland and Rabih Moussawi of Villanova University. The researchers focused on the specialized ETFs that are created to capitalize on investor fads and market trends, and which typically receive a big influx of cash soon after launch. They found that these ETFs over their first five years after launch lag the market on a risk-adjusted basis by 5% per year on average.</p><p>The tenuous relationship between performance and fund flows is evident also in the accompanying tables. The first lists the 10 ETFs with the best year-to-date returns. The second table lists the 10 ETFs with the largest net inflows. In fact, fund flows are a contrarian indicator: the U.S. stock market in the past has performed better when there is a net outflow of cash.The evidence is summarized in the chart below, which plots net inflows of cash to U.S. stock funds (both open-end and exchange-traded funds) by year over the past decade. Notice that in all but two of the years since 2010 there have been net outflows.ReversalNet flows into U.S. equity (open-endded funds and ETF), in billionsThis 2010-2020 period was extremely strong for U.S. stocks. Yet over this time U.S. stock funds experienced a net outflow of $741 billion. (Data are from TrimTabs, a part of EPFR, a division of Informa Financial Intelligence.)This year so far is seeing a major reversal of this longer-term trend. For the first four months of this year, according to TrimTabs, U.S. equity funds have received net inflows of $142.3 billion. If this pace were to continue for the full year, there would be $427 billion of net inflows in 2021 — retracing more than half the total outflow from 2010 through 2020.One study that puts this huge year-to-date inflow in a bearish light appeared last December in the Review of Finance. Entitled “ETF Arbitrage, Non-Fundamental Demand, and Return Predictability,” the study was conducted by David Brown of the University of Arizona, Shaun William Davies of the University of Colorado Boulder and Matthew Ringgenberg of the University of Utah. The researchers found that, on average, the ETFs with the biggest outflows outperformed the ETFs with the biggest inflows for up to a year after these extreme flows.Another academic study that reached a similar conclusion has been circulating since January. Entitled “Competition for Attention in the ETF Space,” the study was conducted by Itzhak Ben-David and Byungwook Kim of Ohio State University, Francesco Franzoni of the University of Lugano in Switzerland and Rabih Moussawi of Villanova University. The researchers focused on the specialized ETFs that are created to capitalize on investor fads and market trends, and which typically receive a big influx of cash soon after launch. They found that these ETFs over their first five years after launch lag the market on a risk-adjusted basis by 5% per year on average.The tenuous relationship between performance and fund flows is evident also in the accompanying tables. As a result, cash burn will continue and it's unlikely that the business will be able to create shareholder value anytime soon. In addition, we find it hard to justify opening a long position in Virgin Galactic since in recent months the company's major backers have significantly trimmed their stakes in the business selling millions worth of shares. As momentum slowly fades away, we believe that the upside in Virgin Galactic stock is limited and it's better to avoid it at this stage.</p>\n<p><b>From Hero to Zero</b></p>\n<p>Virgin Galactic went from one of the hottest SPACs on the market to one of the worst-performing stocks in recent months. After publishing ourarticleon the company titled&nbsp;<i>Virgin Galactic: This May Not End Well</i>&nbsp;on February 15, the company's stock began to rapidly depreciate and now it's down over 50% since that time. The major reason behind the decline was the decision of Virgin Galactic to postpone its test flight from February to May.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e2534069a5396714f1d462dd4b161875\" tg-width=\"1280\" tg-height=\"443\"><span>Chart: Seeking Alpha</span></p>\n<p>At this stage, Virgin Galactic's major goal is to make space tourism a reality and the company has a long-term goal of launching 400 space flights in a year. The company also says that it has 600 firm reservations, which cost $250,000 each. However, despite such an ambitious goal, there's no guarantee that Virgin Galactic will be able to achieve it since the company is still in the pre-revenue stage and it burns a significant amount of cash every quarter in order to stay afloat. While in&nbsp;Q3&nbsp;Virgin Galactic had $742 million in liquidity, in&nbsp;Q4&nbsp;its cash reserves declined to $666 million. In Q3 its adjusted EBITDA and a net loss were -$66 million and -$77 million, respectively, and in Q4 its adjusted EBITDA and a net loss were -$60 million and -$74 million, respectively. With such a poor financial performance and weak outlook, investors of Virgin Galactic should forget about the improvement of earnings, as the cash burn will likely continue.</p>\n<p>The major problem of Virgin Galactic is that after being in the business for a couple of decades the company still hasn't entered a commercialization stage and with each postponement of its flights' investors begin to worry whether the business will be able to create any value at all in the long term. Earlier this year Virgin Galactic once again delayed its plan tooffercommercial space flights to 2022, but no one can say with certainty whether that's going to happen or not. We should not forget that the company experienced a major setback in 2014 when its spaceship broke apart in the air and it took it a few years to restart its space program. On top of that, Virgin Galactic hasn't done any test flights for more than two years, as its latest test flights were conducted in late 2018 and early 2019. Therefore, it's safe to assume that if Virgin Galactic decides to postpone its upcoming test flight again, then it's unlikely that it'll be able to offer commercial space flights in the next couple of years.</p>\n<p>Another downside of Virgin Galactic is that it competes in an industry that's only in its infancy and therefore the ability to monetize its operations is minimal at this stage, while the risks are enormous. According to variousreports, the space tourism business is going to be worth only $1.3 billion by 2025, so it's hard to justify Virgin Galactic's current ~$5 billion valuation, especially since it doesn't make any money at all. Considering this, it's safe to say that despite the ambitious goals the company is extremely overvalued at the current price.</p>\n<p>On top of that, another major concern is heavy insider selling in recent months. The datashowsthat in the last 12 months Virgin Galactic insiders purchased only $239,260 worth of the company's shares, while at the same time they sold over $772 million worth of shares. Just recently it was announced that Virgin Galactic's founder and CEO Richard Branson alonesold$150 million worth of shares at an average price of over $25 per share, while the company's other major backer Chamath Palihapitiyasoldhis personal stake in the business as well. In addition, Cathie Wood has beentrimmingher Virgin Galactic stake from her ARK Space ETF(BATS:ARKX)and the company currently has only 1% weight in the ETF's portfolio.</p>\n<p>Considering all of this, we stick to our opinion that Virgin Galactic is nothing more than a gambling stock at this time. The company already trades at a significant premium to the overall space tourism industry even though it doesn't make any revenues at all. As a result, it's safe to assume that the cash burn will continue, and if the company once again delays its test flight in May, it might be forced to push its commercialization plans for a later date. In addition, as the company's major backers are trimming their stakes in the business, we find it hard to justify buying Virgin Galactic's shares, especially at the current overvalued price. Also, since the stock currently has a short interest ofonly16%, it's very unlikely that we'll see another short squeeze happening anytime soon, as the momentum is not there anymore and short-sellers are not shorting a significant number of shares. In addition, we find it hard to justify opening a long position in Virgin Galactic since in recent months the company's major backers have significantly trimmed their stakes in the business selling millions worth of shares. As momentum slowly fades away, we believe that the upside in Virgin Galactic stock is limited and it's better to avoid it at this stage.\nFrom Hero to Zero\nVirgin Galactic went from one of the hottest SPACs on the market to one of the worst-performing stocks in recent months. After publishing ourarticleon the company titled Virgin Galactic: This May Not End Well on February 15, the company's stock began to rapidly depreciate and now it's down over 50% since that time. The major reason behind the decline was the decision of Virgin Galactic to postpone its test flight from February to May.\nChart: Seeking Alpha\nAt this stage, Virgin Galactic's major goal is to make space tourism a reality and the company has a long-term goal of launching 400 space flights in a year. The company also says that it has 600 firm reservations, which cost $250,000 each. However, despite such an ambitious goal, there's no guarantee that Virgin Galactic will be able to achieve it since the company is still in the pre-revenue stage and it burns a significant amount of cash every quarter in order to stay afloat. While in Q3 Virgin Galactic had $742 million in liquidity, in Q4 its cash reserves declined to $666 million. In Q3 its adjusted EBITDA and a net loss were -$66 million and -$77 million, respectively, and in Q4 its adjusted EBITDA and a net loss were -$60 million and -$74 million, respectively. With such a poor financial performance and weak outlook, investors of Virgin Galactic should forget about the improvement of earnings, as the cash burn will likely continue.\nThe major problem of Virgin Galactic is that after being in the business for a couple of decades the company still hasn't entered a commercialization stage and with each postponement of its flights' investors begin to worry whether the business will be able to create any value at all in the long term. Earlier this year Virgin Galactic once again delayed its plan tooffercommercial space flights to 2022, but no one can say with certainty whether that's going to happen or not. We should not forget that the company experienced a major setback in 2014 when its spaceship broke apart in the air and it took it a few years to restart its space program. On top of that, Virgin Galactic hasn't done any test flights for more than two years, as its latest test flights were conducted in late 2018 and early 2019. Therefore, it's safe to assume that if Virgin Galactic decides to postpone its upcoming test flight again, then it's unlikely that it'll be able to offer commercial space flights in the next couple of years.\nAnother downside of Virgin Galactic is that it competes in an industry that's only in its infancy and therefore the ability to monetize its operations is minimal at this stage, while the risks are enormous. According to variousreports, the space tourism business is going to be worth only $1.3 billion by 2025, so it's hard to justify Virgin Galactic's current ~$5 billion valuation, especially since it doesn't make any money at all. Considering this, it's safe to say that despite the ambitious goals the company is extremely overvalued at the current price.\nOn top of that, another major concern is heavy insider selling in recent months. The datashowsthat in the last 12 months Virgin Galactic insiders purchased only $239,260 worth of the company's shares, while at the same time they sold over $772 million worth of shares. Just recently it was announced that Virgin Galactic's founder and CEO Richard Branson alonesold$150 million worth of shares at an average price of over $25 per share, while the company's other major backer Chamath Palihapitiyasoldhis personal stake in the business as well. In addition, Cathie Wood has beentrimmingher Virgin Galactic stake from her ARK Space ETF(BATS:ARKX)and the company currently has only 1% weight in the ETF's portfolio.\nConsidering all of this, we stick to our opinion that Virgin Galactic is nothing more than a gambling stock at this time. The company already trades at a significant premium to the overall space tourism industry even though it doesn't make any revenues at all. As a result, it's safe to assume that the cash burn will continue, and if the company once again delays its test flight in May, it might be forced to push its commercialization plans for a later date. In addition, as the company's major backers are trimming their stakes in the business, we find it hard to justify buying Virgin Galactic's shares, especially at the current overvalued price. Also, since the stock currently has a short interest ofonly16%, it's very unlikely that we'll see another short squeeze happening anytime soon, as the momentum is not there anymore and short-sellers are not shorting a significant number of shares. In fact, out of the 5,000+ trading days since 2000, there have been only 18 — 0.3% — in which the HNNSI’s decline over the trailing 10 days was greater.</p>\n<p>To appreciate the contrarian significance of this, consider that, on average following those past few occasions when the HNNSI declined by this much and this fast, the Nasdaq Composite was 5.3% higher in one month’s time.</p>\n<p>Why, then, haven’t the contrarians become more bullish? The answer is also evident in the chart: The HNNSI’s plunge over the past 10 days stopped well short of the excessive bearish zone, defined as being in the bottom 10% of the historical distribution. That zone is represented by the beige-shaded box at the bottom of the chart.</p>\n<p>The last time the HNNSI fell into that zone was in March 2020. That was when the market’s “wall of worry” became incredibly strong and was able to support an impressive rally.
