It hasn't.</p>\n<p>\"Six percent inflation is not the right level of inflation, we can all agree on that,” said Nela Richardson, chief economist for payroll processor ADP, citing recent consumer price increases, at a 30-year high, that have wiped out rising wages and far outstripped the Fed's 2% target.</p>\n<p>The Fed still expects that high pace of price increases to be \"transitory,\" but \"wealthier consumers have the luxury of time,\" Richardson said. \"Low-income less-skilled consumers do not. As much as I understand the transitory argument, waiting it out is not the best option for some people.\"</p>\n<p><b>'A LOT OF CONTINUITY'</b></p>\n<p>Biden said Tuesday he would make a decision on the Fed in around four days. Powell's current term ends in February and whether Biden chooses him or Brainard - both have been interviewed - the nominee will need to go through a confirmation hearing and vote in a closely divided Senate.</p>\n<p>But a process that began as a somewhat clear-cut choice - stick with the Republican Powell for continuity and bipartisanship or tap the Democrat Brainard to reward supporters and pursue a broader remake of the central bank - has turned trickier.</p>\n<p>Both are practiced central bankers who have worked together for years and shared in remaking Fed policy to put more emphasis on jobs and allow some higher inflation to do so. Both will have to wrestle in coming months with the same dilemma of how far to let those inflation risks run before taking action.</p>\n<p>\"No matter how this comes out there would be a lot of continuity in Fed policy. Both of these players have long track records,\" St. Louis Federal Reserve President James Bullard said Tuesday on Bloomberg Television.</p>\n<p>But politically the landscape for Biden has changed from one where the Fed could keep its prime focus on jobs to one where the fortunes of the president and his party may need a dose of inflation fighting as well.</p>\n<p><b>INFLATION A 'VERY BIG CONCERN'</b></p>\n<p>Objectively much is going right. The economy added more than half a million jobs in October&nbsp;and analysts expect strong employment growth ahead given the near-record number of openings reported by firms and the willingness to offer higher wages.</p>\n<p>Households are still sitting on large cash balances as a result of pandemic stimulus programs - and are willing to spend based on retail sales</p>\n<p>that continued strong in October. Families with children are receiving monthly payments that have cut poverty rates and should, ostensibly, ease the sting of higher food and gas prices.</p>\n<p>Yet Biden seems to have gotten little or no credit for that. In a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll inflation was cited by strong majorities of Democrats and Republicans as a \"very big concern for me,\" an opinion that did not vary by much across education levels, income or among parents, many of whom receive the monthly child tax credits.</p>\n<p>Republicans have zeroed in on the issue as a potent one for next year's midterm elections, and some Democratic lawmakers and economists as well have called on the Fed for tougher action.</p>\n<p>The Biden administration, like many at the central bank, also believes the current run of inflation is a temporary byproduct of ramping up the global economy after the pandemic.</p>\n<p>But a Biden adviser said fears about inflation and the economy in general were the main reason for Biden’s decline in the polls in recent months - and that it was incumbent on Democrats to show they understand the issue and are trying to solve it.</p>\n<p>How that plays into the Fed choice remains unclear.</p>\n<p>Brainard, at the margin, may be the more \"dovish\" choice, willing to show more patience in raising rates. Still, she's also a Phd economist schooled in the downside of letting inflation spiral and unlikely to let it happen on her watch.</p>\n<p>Powell, a private equity lawyer but convert to the strategy of pushing broad employment gains, may have an easier road to confirmation, with announced support already among Senate Republicans and Democrats.</p>\n<p>The president himself has begun putting inflation more center stage.</p>\n<p>\"Many people remain unsettled about the economy, and we all know why,\" Biden said last week. \"They see higher prices. That's the biggest haul for a US firm since Facebook brought in $16 billion in 2012.</p>\n<p>The initial public offering is the largest globally of the year, and the 12th largest listing ever, according to data provider Refinitiv.</p>\n<p>Shares started trading at $106.75, a 37% leap, before closing the day up 29%. That valued Rivian at almost $86 billion, more than both <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/GM\">General Motors</a>, which has a market value of $85 billion, and <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/F\">Ford</a>, whose market cap is $80 billion.</p>\n<p>The only automakers Rivian is trailing are Tesla, <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/TM\">Toyota</a>, Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz owner Daimler.</p>\n<p>What's driving the hype? After some choppiness, electric vehicle stocks are hot again. Late last month, Tesla became the first automaker to be worth more than $1 trillion. Shares in Lucid Motors, which recently started deliveries of its luxury <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AIRI\">Air</a> sedan, have popped almost 350% this year.</p>\n<p>There is a huge market opportunity as the world tries to wean itself off its dependence on fossil fuels. According to the International Energy Agency, there were 10 million electric cars on the road at the end of 2020. By 2030, that number could reach 145 million or higher if governments meet ambitious climate targets.</p>\n<p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/ISBC\">Investors</a> see Rivian as a prime candidate to cash in on this shift. The company has a deal to deliver 100,000 vehicles to Amazon by 2025. It could try to secure agreements with other logistics companies, too.</p>\n<p>\"Rivian's order flow and backing from Amazon are key validating signals for investors,\" said Asad Hussain, senior emerging technology analyst at PitchBook.</p>\n<p>But Rivian is far from a mature company. It only started producing and delivering vehicles in September (yes, two months ago). And it faces huge challenges to scale up manufacturing in an environment that's confounding even the biggest players.</p>\n<p>The company's valuation \"implies a ridiculous amount of production\" over the next decade, David Trainer, the CEO of research firm <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/NGD\">New</a> Constructs, told me.</p>\n<p>Rivian needs to produce well over 1 million vehicles by the end of the decade to justify its rich valuation, according to Trainer. Tesla, which started production in 2008, delivered just under 500,000 cars last year.</p>\n<p>\"It's taken Tesla over a decade to get to a level that Rivian is supposed to double,\" Trainer said.</p>\n<p>Plus, it will face major competition, as traditional automakers like Volkswagen (VLKAF) and <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/BGC\">General</a> Motors (GM) invest billions in producing their own electric cars. Trainer said that valuations for companies like Tesla and Rivian seem to indicate that the legacy brands are \"all going to go out of business, even though many of them have established electric vehicle sales.\"</p>\n<p>The takeaway: The market is flush with cash as a result of unprecedented stimulus from central banks and governments. That's helped drive market indexes to ever higher peaks and produced a record year for initial public offerings as investors search for new places to park their money. But amid all the euphoria, it's important to keep an eye on the fundamentals.</p>\n<p>Is this the biggest spike in consumer prices since 1990?</p>\n<p>Prices for consumers continue to push higher, frustrating shoppers and worrying the policymakers tasked with keeping inflation under control.</p>\n<p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/JE\">Just</a> how significant is the problem? Fresh data out Wednesday showed that over the past 12 months, prices climbed 6.2% -- the biggest increase since November 1990.</p>\n<p>The elevated CPI reading could undermine the Federal Reserve's insistence that the phenomenon is transitory and will recede as pandemic-related disruptions ease.</p>\n<p>Unpacking the definition of \"transitory\" has become Wall Street's favorite sport. Dissent among investors has been growing as companies keep hiking prices to try to offset higher costs for labor, shipping and materials.</p>\n<p>\"Our core view remains that the underlying supply-demand imbalances will, as Chair [Jerome] <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/POWL\">Powell</a> said last week, largely work themselves out, leaving inflation near the Fed's goal,\" <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/GS\">Goldman Sachs</a> strategists said in a note to clients this week. \"But it is now clear that this process will take longer than initially expected, and the inflation overshoot will likely get worse before it gets better.\"</p>\n<p>This just in: <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/TSN\">Tyson</a> Foods, Conagra and Kraft Heinz have notified retail customers in recent weeks that they'll raise prices in January for some frozen and refrigerated meats. Products that will see increases include <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/BLL\">Ball</a> Park hot dogs and burgers and Jimmy <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/DF\">Dean</a> frozen breakfast, according to supplier letters viewed by CNN Business.</p>\n<p>Stores could choose to pass those higher prices on to shoppers so they don't lose money.</p>\n<p>On the radar: The cost of goods leaving <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/CAAS\">China</a>'s factories surged by a record rate last month, according to data out Wednesday. There are signs of that inflation already feeding through to consumers. Chinese CPI rose 1.5% in October, double the rate seen the previous month.</p>\n<p>The end of an era for an <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AFG\">American</a> business icon</p>\n<p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/BGC\">General</a> Electric (GE), the industrial conglomerate founded by Thomas <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/EIX\">Edison</a> in 1892 and a 20th century icon of America's business might, is breaking up.</p>\n<p>The company announced Tuesday that it will split into three separate public companies, spinning out its aviation, healthcare and energy businesses. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/ISBC\">Investors</a> applauded the move, sending its stock up 2.7%.</p>\n<p>Step back: The dissembling of the sprawling company built by Jack Welch, who led GE from 1981 to 2001, shows how much the corporate world — and the market — has changed over the past two decades.</p>\n<p>At its peak in early 2001, GE's stock was worth more than $500 billion, making it <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> of the most valuable companies on the planet. But the 2008 financial crisis dealt a body blow to GE Capital, and the company made a disastrous bet on the fossil fuel industry when the world was turning toward renewable and cleaner energy solutions. GE has had to sell off assets to clear its enormous debt load.</p>\n<p>What's left of the company is worth just $122 billion.</p>\n<p>Big picture: The overhaul at GE is part of a larger trend. Investors are pushing firms to simplify their businesses. Japan's Toshiba is also considering a plan to divide itself into three separate companies. Last week, $IBM(<a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/IBM\">IBM</a>)$ (IBM) spun out its infrastructure services business under the name Kyndryl.</p>\n<p>The powerful conglomerate could rise again. That's the biggest haul for a US firm since Facebook brought in $16 billion in 2012.</p>\n<p>The initial public offering is the largest globally of the year, and the 12th largest listing ever, according to data provider Refinitiv.</p>\n<p>Shares started trading at $106.75, a 37% leap, before closing the day up 29%. That valued Rivian at almost $86 billion, more than both <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/GM\">General Motors</a>, which has a market value of $85 billion, and <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/F\">Ford</a>, whose market cap is $80 billion.</p>\n<p>The only automakers Rivian is trailing are Tesla, <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/TM\">Toyota</a>, Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz owner Daimler.</p>\n<p>What's driving the hype? After some choppiness, electric vehicle stocks are hot again. Late last month, Tesla became the first automaker to be worth more than $1 trillion. Shares in Lucid Motors, which recently started deliveries of its luxury <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AIRI\">Air</a> sedan, have popped almost 350% this year.</p>\n<p>There is a huge market opportunity as the world tries to wean itself off its dependence on fossil fuels. According to the International Energy Agency, there were 10 million electric cars on the road at the end of 2020. By 2030, that number could reach 145 million or higher if governments meet ambitious climate targets.</p>\n<p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/ISBC\">Investors</a> see Rivian as a prime candidate to cash in on this shift. The company has a deal to deliver 100,000 vehicles to Amazon by 2025. It could try to secure agreements with other logistics companies, too.</p>\n<p>\"Rivian's order flow and backing from Amazon are key validating signals for investors,\" said Asad Hussain, senior emerging technology analyst at PitchBook.</p>\n<p>But Rivian is far from a mature company. It only started producing and delivering vehicles in September (yes, two months ago). And it faces huge challenges to scale up manufacturing in an environment that's confounding even the biggest players.</p>\n<p>The company's valuation \"implies a ridiculous amount of production\" over the next decade, David Trainer, the CEO of research firm <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/NGD\">New</a> Constructs, told me.</p>\n<p>Rivian needs to produce well over 1 million vehicles by the end of the decade to justify its rich valuation, according to Trainer. Tesla, which started production in 2008, delivered just under 500,000 cars last year.</p>\n<p>\"It's taken Tesla over a decade to get to a level that Rivian is supposed to double,\" Trainer said.</p>\n<p>Plus, it will face major competition, as traditional automakers like Volkswagen (VLKAF) and <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/BGC\">General</a> Motors (GM) invest billions in producing their own electric cars. Trainer said that valuations for companies like Tesla and Rivian seem to indicate that the legacy brands are \"all going to go out of business, even though many of them have established electric vehicle sales.\"</p>\n<p>The takeaway: The market is flush with cash as a result of unprecedented stimulus from central banks and governments. That's helped drive market indexes to ever higher peaks and produced a record year for initial public offerings as investors search for new places to park their money. You can listen to an audio version of the newsletter by clicking the same link.\nLondon (CNN Business)Rivian, the electric vehicle maker backed by Amazon (AMZN) and Ford (F), made its Wall Street debut on Wednesday, surrounded by mania that befits a market that appears to be defying gravity.\nWhat's happening: The company priced its stock above the expected range at $78 apiece, allowing it to raise an estimated $11.9 billion. That's the biggest haul for a US firm since Facebook brought in $16 billion in 2012.\nThe initial public offering is the largest globally of the year, and the 12th largest listing ever, according to data provider Refinitiv.\nShares started trading at $106.75, a 37% leap, before closing the day up 29%. That valued Rivian at almost $86 billion, more than both General Motors, which has a market value of $85 billion, and Ford, whose market cap is $80 billion.\nThe only automakers Rivian is trailing are Tesla, Toyota, Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz owner Daimler.\nWhat's driving the hype? After some choppiness, electric vehicle stocks are hot again. Late last month, Tesla became the first automaker to be worth more than $1 trillion. Shares in Lucid Motors, which recently started deliveries of its luxury Air sedan, have popped almost 350% this year.\nThere is a huge market opportunity as the world tries to wean itself off its dependence on fossil fuels. According to the International Energy Agency, there were 10 million electric cars on the road at the end of 2020. By 2030, that number could reach 145 million or higher if governments meet ambitious climate targets.\nInvestors see Rivian as a prime candidate to cash in on this shift. The company has a deal to deliver 100,000 vehicles to Amazon by 2025. It could try to secure agreements with other logistics companies, too.\n\"Rivian's order flow and backing from Amazon are key validating signals for investors,\" said Asad Hussain, senior emerging technology analyst at PitchBook.\nBut Rivian is far from a mature company. It only started producing and delivering vehicles in September (yes, two months ago). And it faces huge challenges to scale up manufacturing in an environment that's confounding even the biggest players.\nThe company's valuation \"implies a ridiculous amount of production\" over the next decade, David Trainer, the CEO of research firm New Constructs, told me.\nRivian needs to produce well over 1 million vehicles by the end of the decade to justify its rich valuation, according to Trainer. Tesla, which started production in 2008, delivered just under 500,000 cars last year.\n\"It's taken Tesla over a decade to get to a level that Rivian is supposed to double,\" Trainer said.\nPlus, it will face major competition, as traditional automakers like Volkswagen (VLKAF) and General Motors (GM) invest billions in producing their own electric cars. Trainer said that valuations for companies like Tesla and Rivian seem to indicate that the legacy brands are \"all going to go out of business, even though many of them have established electric vehicle sales.\"\nThe takeaway: The market is flush with cash as a result of unprecedented stimulus from central banks and governments. That's helped drive market indexes to ever higher peaks and produced a record year for initial public offerings as investors search for new places to park their money. But amid all the euphoria, it's important to keep an eye on the fundamentals.\nIs this the biggest spike in consumer prices since 1990?\nPrices for consumers continue to push higher, frustrating shoppers and worrying the policymakers tasked with keeping inflation under control.\nJust how significant is the problem? Fresh data out Wednesday showed that over the past 12 months, prices climbed 6.2% -- the biggest increase since November 1990.\nThe elevated CPI reading could undermine the Federal Reserve's insistence that the phenomenon is transitory and will recede as pandemic-related disruptions ease.\nUnpacking the definition of \"transitory\" has become Wall Street's favorite sport. Dissent among investors has been growing as companies keep hiking prices to try to offset higher costs for labor, shipping and materials.\n\"Our core view remains that the underlying supply-demand imbalances will, as Chair [Jerome] Powell said last week, largely work themselves out, leaving inflation near the Fed's goal,\" Goldman Sachs strategists said in a note to clients this week. \"But it is now clear that this process will take longer than initially expected, and the inflation overshoot will likely get worse before it gets better.\"\nThis just in: Tyson Foods, Conagra and Kraft Heinz have notified retail customers in recent weeks that they'll raise prices in January for some frozen and refrigerated meats. Products that will see increases include Ball Park hot dogs and burgers and Jimmy Dean frozen breakfast, according to supplier letters viewed by CNN Business.\nStores could choose to pass those higher prices on to shoppers so they don't lose money.\nOn the radar: The cost of goods leaving China's factories surged by a record rate last month, according to data out Wednesday. There are signs of that inflation already feeding through to consumers. Chinese CPI rose 1.5% in October, double the rate seen the previous month.\nThe end of an era for an American business icon\nGeneral Electric (GE), the industrial conglomerate founded by Thomas Edison in 1892 and a 20th century icon of America's business might, is breaking up.\nThe company announced Tuesday that it will split into three separate public companies, spinning out its aviation, healthcare and energy businesses. Investors applauded the move, sending its stock up 2.7%.\nStep back: The dissembling of the sprawling company built by Jack Welch, who led GE from 1981 to 2001, shows how much the corporate world — and the market — has changed over the past two decades.\nAt its peak in early 2001, GE's stock was worth more than $500 billion, making it one of the most valuable companies on the planet. But the 2008 financial crisis dealt a body blow to GE Capital, and the company made a disastrous bet on the fossil fuel industry when the world was turning toward renewable and cleaner energy solutions. GE has had to sell off assets to clear its enormous debt load.\nWhat's left of the company is worth just $122 billion.\nBig picture: The overhaul at GE is part of a larger trend. Investors are pushing firms to simplify their businesses. Japan's Toshiba is also considering a plan to divide itself into three separate companies. It hasn't.</p>\n<p>\"Six percent inflation is not the right level of inflation, we can all agree on that,” said Nela Richardson, chief economist for payroll processor ADP, citing recent consumer price increases, at a 30-year high, that have wiped out rising wages and far outstripped the Fed's 2% target.</p>\n<p>The Fed still expects that high pace of price increases to be \"transitory,\" but \"wealthier consumers have the luxury of time,\" Richardson said. \"Low-income less-skilled consumers do not. As much as I understand the transitory argument, waiting it out is not the best option for some people.\"</p>\n<p><b>'A LOT OF CONTINUITY'</b></p>\n<p>Biden said Tuesday he would make a decision on the Fed in around four days. Powell's current term ends in February and whether Biden chooses him or Brainard - both have been interviewed - the nominee will need to go through a confirmation hearing and vote in a closely divided Senate.</p>\n<p>But a process that began as a somewhat clear-cut choice - stick with the Republican Powell for continuity and bipartisanship or tap the Democrat Brainard to reward supporters and pursue a broader remake of the central bank - has turned trickier.</p>\n<p>Both are practiced central bankers who have worked together for years and shared in remaking Fed policy to put more emphasis on jobs and allow some higher inflation to do so. Both will have to wrestle in coming months with the same dilemma of how far to let those inflation risks run before taking action.</p>\n<p>\"No matter how this comes out there would be a lot of continuity in Fed policy. Both of these players have long track records,\" St. Louis Federal Reserve President James Bullard said Tuesday on Bloomberg Television.</p>\n<p>But politically the landscape for Biden has changed from one where the Fed could keep its prime focus on jobs to one where the fortunes of the president and his party may need a dose of inflation fighting as well.</p>\n<p><b>INFLATION A 'VERY BIG CONCERN'</b></p>\n<p>Objectively much is going right. The economy added more than half a million jobs in October&nbsp;and analysts expect strong employment growth ahead given the near-record number of openings reported by firms and the willingness to offer higher wages.</p>\n<p>Households are still sitting on large cash balances as a result of pandemic stimulus programs - and are willing to spend based on retail sales</p>\n<p>that continued strong in October. Families with children are receiving monthly payments that have cut poverty rates and should, ostensibly, ease the sting of higher food and gas prices.</p>\n<p>Yet Biden seems to have gotten little or no credit for that.
