After being one of the beneficiaries of the “Reddit rally” along withGameStop(NYSE:GME) andAMC Entertainment(NYSE:AMC) in late January, PLTR has been nearly halved from its closing high.

Shares in fact are down more than 15% year-to-date and threatening to hit their lowest levels since November.

From that perspective, Palantir simply needs to give investors some good news on Tuesday — any kind of good news.

But the second is that Palantir still is relatively new to the public markets. The company onlyexecuted its direct listingat the end of September. Tuesday’s earnings release is just the company’s third so far.

Obviously, investors knew of Palantir before it went public. The prospectus filed with the direct listing included historical financial data.

Still, there are big questions that still surround Palantir — including exactly what kind of company this is. As investors review the Q1 numbers and listen to the post-earnings conference call, they’re going to have those questions in mind — and they’ll be looking for answers.

A Software Company or a Consulting Firm?

There’s one core question that is paramount for PLTR stock. Is Palantir a software company or a consulting firm?

It’s too simplistic to say that PLTR is too cheap if it’s the former and too expensive if it’s the latter, but there is some truth to that argument. Even after a pullback, and even backing out net cash, PLTR still trades for about 25x this year’s consensus revenue estimate.

That’s a software multiple, pure and simple. In fact, it’s a somewhat high software multiple. Companies in that ballpark includeSnowflake(NYSE:SNOW),Datadog(NASDAQ:DDOG), andCrowdStrike(NASDAQ:CRWD)

It might seem ridiculous to question the operating model this way 18 years after the company’s founding, and obviously, Palantir does offer software. Most notably, its Foundry platform is the key to its go-to-market strategy going forward.

But the question is to what extent human intervention is needed to make the Big Data platform work. AsNew Yorkmagazine put it inan intriguing profileof Palantir last year:

Palantir, it turns out, has run headlong into the problem plaguing many tech firms engaged in the quest for total information awareness: Real-world data is often too messy and complex for computers to translate without lots of help from humans.

One quick-and-dirty way to answer this question is to look at gross margins. Not coincidentally, for Palantir they’ve been all over the place.

In 2020, excluding stock-based compensation (which was inflated by the direct listing), gross margins were 80.5%. The year before, they came in at just 71.1%.

Gross margins thus are going to be a point of focus in Q1. Another 80%-plus print would suggest that Foundry is doing what Palantir, and PLTR bulls, believe it can: cement Palantir as a top-tier software company. That in turn could lead PLTR stock to be revalued as such.

What Else Can Move PLTR Stock

Of course, investors will be looking at more than just one metric.

Revenue will be a point of focus. After the fourth quarter, Palantir guided for45% year-over-year growthin Q1. That’s about in line with the 47% increase posted for full-year 2020.

Historically, most software companies guide conservatively (and as a result post beats relative to Wall Street expectations). So even after the pullback in PLTR stock, Palantir needs to hit 45% at least. It probably takes something closer to 50% to get investors truly excited.

That said, a big beat or miss is somewhat unlikely. Palantir serves most large-cap companies under large-scale contracts, and the company gave Q1 guidance halfway through the quarter. Its visibility toward quarter-end should have been quite clear.

That leaves earnings. Analysts are looking for 4 cents per share from Palantir, and here too a beat seems likely. But how Palantir drives a beat will be important (while a miss looks dangerous for PLTR stock).

Again, gross margins will be key, but the same is true for spending.

As an analyst noted late last year, Palantir’s operating expensesdeclined in 2020. Again excluding share-based compensation, sales and marketing spend dropped 23%, and research and development 14%. (General and administrative expense did increase 15%.)

The cut in spending seems strange given Palantir’s strong growth. The novel coronavirus pandemic may have played a role, admittedly. The more normalized environment of the first quarter should give some more color on this front.

All told, this is not likely to be a quarter where a beat on its own sends PLTR stock higher. Given the number of questions here, “how” might be more important than”how much?”

Palantir fell about 6% in morning trading.

On the date of publication, Vince Martin did not have (either directly or indirectly) any positions in the securities mentioned in this article.
","source":"lsy1606302653667","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Palantir Technologies Could Have an Unpleasant Surprise on This Week’s Earnings
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nPalantir Technologies Could Have an Unpleasant Surprise on This Week’s Earnings\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-05-10 22:46 GMT+8 InvestorPlace\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
PLTR stock is struggling into a suddenly key earnings report. There are two reasons why first-quarter earnings on Tuesday look key forPalantir Technologies(NYSE:PLTR) stock. The first is that PLTR is ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"PLTR":"Palantir Technologies Inc."},"source_url":"https://investorplace.com/2021/05/pltr-stock-unpleasant-surprise-this-weeks-earnings/","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1167387222","content_text":"PLTR stock is struggling into a suddenly key earnings report. There are two reasons why first-quarter earnings on Tuesday look key forPalantir Technologies(NYSE:PLTR) stock. The first is that PLTR is sliding into the report. While the actual name remains a secret, the background and skillset of Greg Abel suggests the board will choose him.
\n
The primary reason is Abel’s extensive experience with capital allocation. During his time running Berkshire Hathaway Energy, and later as vice chairman overseeing non-insurance operations, Abel oversaw many acquisitions. He is also much more comfortable in the spotlight and about 10 years younger than Ajit Jain, the vice chairman in charge of insurance operations, which would give him a longer run at the helm. Jain, by contrast, is a brilliant handicapper more comfortable evaluating insurance risks (though he is also one of the best executives in the world, having overseen acquisitions of his own).
\n
The role of chairman will likely fall to Buffett’s son, Howard, whose primary duty will be to ensure Berkshire’s culture remains intact. Responsibility for managing Berkshire’s investment portfolio should fall to Todd Combs and Ted Weschler, who joined Berkshire in 2010 and 2011, respectively.
\n
Integral to the C-suite changes is the important question regarding Berkshire’s future capital allocation.
\n
Berkshire’s earning power all but guarantees it will have enough cash to invest in worthwhile projects at the subsidiary level and ample cash to make opportunistic acquisitions. That means cash will need to be returned to shareholders.
\n
Here Berkshire has two main options and a blended third.
\n
The quickest way to return capital to shareholders is via dividends. But dividends are tax-inefficient and impose a single standard on all shareholders, two reasons why Buffett has resisted paying one in the past. A better way is through share repurchases which, assuming they are made at prices below intrinsic value, instantly increase per-share value for remaining shareholders. However, share repurchases are price-dependent.
\n
This leaves a blended option as the most logical course of action. Berkshire could set a regular dividend equal to, say, 25% of normalized operating earnings. Then if share repurchases aren’t available or an acquisition doesn’t materialize, infrequent special dividends could be declared.
\n
A dividend during Buffett’s remaining tenure is unlikely if share repurchases remain an option. But the day will come, perhaps soon, when Berkshire simply cannot allocate all the capital it generates and will need to pay a dividend. Longtime shareholders will recognize the need for such a change in policy, and others will rejoice at the prospect of Berkshire as a dividend-paying stock.
\n
What the company’s new leaders are unlikely to do is break up Berkshire Hathaway. More so than other conglomerates, this firm is truly more than the sum of its parts. The conglomerate gains in tax efficiency, diversification, and capital allocation. Dismantling Berkshire to “unlock” value via higher price-earnings multiples would destroy these advantages and incur unnecessary taxes. Most important, it would tarnish the reputation Berkshire has carefully nurtured as a permanent home for generational family businesses.
\n
Buffett put it succinctly in his 2018 Chairman’s letter, published in 2019: “Truly good businesses are exceptionally hard to find. Selling any you are lucky enough to own makes no sense at all.”
\n
Yet the next generation of Berkshire’s leaders are likely to hear loud calls from Wall Street (and perhaps some shareholders) to break up Buffett’s life’s work. The crux of the argument over breaking up Berkshire comes down to what constitutes value.
\n
Berkshire was built on the notion that value – the sum of all future cash flows discounted to the present – is independent of the stock market’s appraisal of that value. The underlying cash flows of Berkshire’s many subsidiaries would not change upon being separated into pieces (in fact they could be lower considering duplicated costs), which means that their value would not increase after a breakup. The subsidiaries already take advantage of opportunities for organic investment and bolt-on acquisitions that come their way, and Berkshire has taken care of the reinvestment problem by allowing excess cash to be sent to headquarters.
\n
Instead, Berkshire’s future value creation will likely come by minimizing the downside (maintaining insurance underwriting discipline and resisting mediocre capital allocation moves) to allow infrequent but meaningful advantages to accrue and accumulate to the benefit of ongoing shareholders.
\n
Value can be created by time arbitrage (a long-term business owner in an often short-term-thinking market), being a permanent home for family businesses (private-market discounts), by acting as an alternative source of financing when credit markets dry up (as Buffett did in the financial crisis when he invested $14.5 billion over the course of three days in Goldman Sachs, Wrigley, and General Electric), and through opportunistic share repurchases.
\n
Of course, the ultimate fate of Berkshire Hathaway rests with its shareholders. Berkshire will undoubtedly not look the same in 25, 50 or 100 years, but it should thrive without Warren Buffett because of the unique corporate culture that he and Charlie Munger so painstakingly nurtured for the last half-century.
\n
That is perhaps the highest praise one can give a man who took a blank canvas and turned it into one of the finest and most highly valued pieces of artwork the business world has ever seen.
","source":"lsy1603348471595","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Berkshire Hathaway after Buffett: Who will be CEO, what else will change — and what won’t
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nBerkshire Hathaway after Buffett: Who will be CEO, what else will change — and what won’t\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-05-03 14:57 GMT+8 MarketWatch\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
The next CEO will need a plan to return cash to shareholders\nWarren Buffett turns 91 on Aug. 30. (AAL) has seen a dramatic decline in passenger demand in the past year as the COVID-19 pandemic prompted many would-be travelers to stay home. The company's passenger volume in 2020 was less than half the 215 million people it transported a year earlier. On top of these financial pressures, American Airlines also faces an antitrust probe by the U.S. Department of Justice into its partnership with JetBlue Airways Corp. (JBLU) over concerns that the agreement may inflate passenger fares.
\n
Investors will look for how American Airlines addressing these challenges when the company reports Q1 FY 2021 earnings before the market open on April 22. Analysts predict that adjusted losses per share (EPS) will widen significantly year-over-year (YOY) as revenue falls for a fifth consecutive quarter.
\n
A key metric that investors may focus on in the earnings report is American Airlines' passenger load factor, a measure of airline efficiency that reflects the percentage of American Airlines' seating capacity that is being used. Analysts expect load factor to fall YOY and to be slightly lower than the latest reported quarter, which is Q4 FY 2020.
\n
American Airlines' stock has experienced multiple periods of intense volatility in the past year. In June 2020, shares surged ahead of the market, only to fall behind the next month. The stock largely traded sideways until it began a long rally in late October 2020. American's shares outperformed the market between December and mid-March, although they have fallen back somewhat in recent weeks. As of April 20, American Airlines has provided a 1-year trailing total return of 84.2%, far ahead of the S&P 500's total return of 46.5%.
\n
Source: TradingView.
\n
American Airlines Earning History
\n
American Airlines' stock has been buoyed in recent months by its recent earnings history along with investor optimism about new COVID-19 vaccines and an emerging economic recovery. While the company posted four consecutive quarters of adjusted losses per share in FY 2020, American Airlines' losses narrowed significantly in Q3 and Q4. After American's Q3 earnings report in October, the stock initially dipped and then more than doubled over the next five months through the end of March 2021. But now, analysts predict that American's earnings recovery will reverse. They see Q1 FY 2021 adjusted losses per share widening YOY, and also on a sequential basis relative to Q4 FY 2020.
\n
American Airlines has also reported four straight quarters of YOY revenue declines, also the first in several years. Revenue dipped by 19.6% YOY for Q1 FY 2020, a reflection of the impact of the pandemic on the later portion of that quarter. Revenue then plunged 86.4% in Q2 FY 2020, followed by a 73.4% drop in Q3 and 64.4% in Q4. Analysts expect the size of the decline to be less in Q1 FY 2021, but still down 52.2% YOY.
\n
\n <colgroup span=\"1\"></colgroup>\n <colgroup span=\"1\"></colgroup>\n <colgroup span=\"1\"></colgroup>\n <colgroup span=\"1\"></colgroup>\n
\n
\n
American Airlines Key Stats
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n

\n
Estimate for Q1 FY 2021
\n
Q1 FY 2020
\n
Q1 FY 2019
\n
\n
\n
Adjusted EPS
\n
-$4.26
\n
-$2.65
\n
$0.52
\n
\n
\n
Revenue (billions)
\n
$4.1
\n
$8.5
\n
$10.6
\n
\n
\n
Load factor
\n
63.5%
\n
72.7%
\n
82.2%
\n
\n
\n
\n
The Key Metric
\n
As mentioned, American Airlines investors are likely to look to the company's load factor as well. This key metric for the airline industry is a measure of the percentage of available seating capacity that is filled with passengers. Higher load factors indicate a higher percentage of seats that are occupied by passengers. Airlines experience roughly fixed costs to send an aircraft into flight regardless of the number of passengers on board, so there is an incentive to fill as many seats as possible in order to better distribute those costs. For this reason, a higher load factor is a sign of greater efficiency and profitability. In the past year, however, there have been strong pressures against load factor, primarily because the COVID-19 pandemic has turned the above logic on its head. Fuller planes are seen as worse from a public health perspective during a pandemic. As fewer passengers travel and load factor drops, companies like American Airlines face a profitability crisis.
\n
American Airlines' load factor has fallen sharply during the pandemic. In the three years prior to 2020, the company regularly reported a load factor in the 80s. This metric first began to fall in Q1 FY 2020, when the company reported a load factor of 72.7%. That dropped to a low of 42.3% in Q2 and then recovered somewhat through the second half of the year, reaching 64.1% for Q4. (JBLU) over concerns that the agreement may inflate passenger fares.\nInvestors will look for how American Airlines addressing these challenges when the company reports Q1 FY 2021 earnings before the market open on April 22. Analysts predict that adjusted losses per share (EPS) will widen significantly year-over-year (YOY) as revenue falls for a fifth consecutive quarter.\nA key metric that investors may focus on in the earnings report is American Airlines' passenger load factor, a measure of airline efficiency that reflects the percentage of American Airlines' seating capacity that is being used. Analysts expect load factor to fall YOY and to be slightly lower than the latest reported quarter, which is Q4 FY 2020.\nAmerican Airlines' stock has experienced multiple periods of intense volatility in the past year. In June 2020, shares surged ahead of the market, only to fall behind the next month. The stock largely traded sideways until it began a long rally in late October 2020. American's shares outperformed the market between December and mid-March, although they have fallen back somewhat in recent weeks. As of April 20, American Airlines has provided a 1-year trailing total return of 84.2%, far ahead of the S&P 500's total return of 46.5%.\nSource: TradingView.\nAmerican Airlines Earning History \nAmerican Airlines' stock has been buoyed in recent months by its recent earnings history along with investor optimism about new COVID-19 vaccines and an emerging economic recovery. They see Q1 FY 2021 adjusted losses per share widening YOY, and also on a sequential basis relative to Q4 FY 2020.\nAmerican Airlines has also reported four straight quarters of YOY revenue declines, also the first in several years. Analysts expect the size of the decline to be less in Q1 FY 2021, but still down 52.2% YOY.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAmerican Airlines Key Stats\n\n\n\n\n\nEstimate for Q1 FY 2021\nQ1 FY 2020\nQ1 FY 2019\n\n\nAdjusted EPS\n-$4.26\n-$2.65\n$0.52\n\n\nRevenue (billions)\n$4.1\n$8.5\n$10.6\n\n\nLoad factor\n63.5%\n72.7%\n82.2%\n\n\n\nThe Key Metric \nAs mentioned, American Airlines investors are likely to look to the company's load factor as well. As fewer passengers travel and load factor drops, companies like American Airlines face a profitability crisis.\nAmerican Airlines' load factor has fallen sharply during the pandemic. Analysts now estimate that American's progress in turning around its load factor will essentially halt. In Q1 FY 2021, they estimate that load factor will fall slightly, to 63.5%, on a sequential basis. That number also will be down sharply from 72.7% in the same quarter a year earlier.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":283,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"hots":[{"id":376974009,"gmtCreate":1619085522201,"gmtModify":1634288683212,"author":{"id":"3581371468059703","authorId":"3581371468059703","name":"Williamcts","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0860e2d6d272f328abd7aa6ef6864480","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581371468059703","authorIdStr":"3581371468059703"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Cool","listText":"Cool","text":"Cool","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/376974009","repostId":"2129808947","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":283,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":108201768,"gmtCreate":1620025811554,"gmtModify":1634208423122,"author":{"id":"3581371468059703","authorId":"3581371468059703","name":"Williamcts","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0860e2d6d272f328abd7aa6ef6864480","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581371468059703","authorIdStr":"3581371468059703"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Like the informative ","listText":"Like the informative ","text":"Like the informative","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/108201768","repostId":"1135819410","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1135819410","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1619999342,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1135819410?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-05-03 07:49","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Uber, Pfizer, PayPal, T-Mobile, ViacomCBS, General Motors, and Other Stocks for Investors to Watch This Week","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1135819410","media":"Barrons","summary":"It’s another packed week of earnings reports, with 130 S&P 500 companies on deck to release their fi","content":"
It’s another packed week of earnings reports, with 130 S&P 500 companies on deck to release their first-quarter results. Here were the main metrics expected from the report, compared to consensus data compiled by Bloomberg:
\n
\n

Initial jobless claims, week ended April 17: 610,000 expected vs. 576,000 during the prior week

\n

Continuing claims, week ended April 3: 3.640 million expected vs. 3.731 million during the prior week

\n
\n
Last week's new claims came as a welcome surprise after more than a year of elevated initial filings. At 576,000, new claims broke below the Great Recession-era high of 665,000 filed in March 2009 for the first time in more than a year. And claims have dropped precipitously from their all-time high of 6.1 million from last spring.
\n
But the labor market recovery has still been choppy, and the general downtrend in new jobless claims over the past several months has come with some bumps higher. Other reports have also underscored the stop-and-start nature of the rebound, with the Federal Reserve's latest Beige Book last week noting that many regions continued to experience labor shortages as well as hiring challenges over the past several weeks.
\n

\n
And even within the jobless claims report, some metrics have remained stubbornly elevated and pointed to persistently high levels of unemployment. Nearly 17 million Americans were still receiving unemployment benefits across all programs as of late March, including more than 12 million Americans on the federal Pandemic Unemployment Assistance and Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation program, which each expire in September.
