However, Warren Buffett has often called insurance the industry that's most important to the company he's run for more than five decades, <b>Berkshire Hathaway</b>.&nbsp;In fact, insurance has been a cornerstone of Berkshire's growth since its 1967 acquisition of National Indemnity.</p><p>One insurer that has continually crushed it is <b>Progressive</b> (NYSE:PGR). Progressive is a well-run company with healthy profit margins. Not only that, but since 2015, Progressive has outperformed the broader market, providing investors with a total return of 379% compared to the <b>S&amp;P 500</b>'s total return of 128%. Even after that run of success, its stock trades for a bargain price.</p><p>Despite all that, Buffett and Berkshire don't own Progressive. Should you?</p><h2>A money-making machine</h2><p>Progressive continues to crush its competition by maintaining very attractive metrics on the policies that it underwrites.&nbsp;The company has done a tremendous job of growing its top and bottom lines since 2015, with revenue and net income growing by compound annual growth rates of 15% and 35%, respectively -- a testament to the insurer's skill at underwriting profitable insurance policies.</p><p>One reason is an underappreciated focus on technology. While many companies have been coming out with telematics programs in recent years, Progressive was the company on the cutting edge. The company's Progressive Snapshot product, also known as usage-based insurance, was added in 2011, and is just <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> of the drivers of Progressive's growth over the decade.</p><h2>Extreme weather couldn't bring it down</h2><p>Progressive's growth was on full display in the first quarter, with strong top- and bottom-line figures. The insurer increased total revenue by 22.8%, bringing in $11.4 billion in total.</p><p>This revenue growth was boosted by two things. First, net premium growth was up 10.5% from last year to $10.4 billion. Second, net gains from investments were $585 million, up from last year's net loss from investments of $553 million when asset prices plummeted in the early stages of the pandemic. Total expenses were up in the period as well, with losses and loss adjustment expenses increasing 15.5% to $7.1 billion. This was due largely to extreme weather events in the quarter. Despite this, net income was up 111% from last year to $1.5 billion.</p><p>Winter storms in Oregon and Texas as well as tornadoes in Texas and Alabama caused significant losses to its property line of coverage in the first quarter. This was elevated due to $144.6 million in catastrophe losses, after reinsurance, which added 30.6 points to the combined ratio and brought this ratio on its property line of coverage to a brutal 115%. Combined ratio is a key metric in the insurance industry that measures a company's profitability and operating performance. A ratio below 100% means that the company is profitable, while a ratio over 100% means that the company is spending more on claims and operating expenses. The property line of coverage saw a $70 million loss in the quarter.</p><p>However, investors need not worry. The company was buoyed by its bread and butter -- personal lines of auto and home coverage -- which brought in a $962 million profit, along with its commercial lines, which brought in another $228 million in profits. And despite the hit from its property line, its total combined ratio was a stellar 89.3% in the quarter. Even better, Progressive hasn't had an annual combined ratio over 100 since 2000, showing the insurer's ability to write profitable policies across two decades.</p><h2>A company worth holding in a variety of market environments</h2><p>Several financial observers have sounded the alarm on inflation lately, including former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers and Buffett himself during Berkshire's annual investors meeting.</p><p>During inflationary times, insurance companies can perform better because they put excess cash to work to generate investment income. While Progressive is less reliant on investment income than competitors, it would still benefit from higher interest rates. Not only that, but its position as a leader in personal auto insurance coverage and its impressive underwriting ability make this the best insurance company to own. This skill in underwriting is the reason Progressive has been a cash cow and has outperformed the S&amp;P 500 as well as industry competitors <b>Allstate</b> and <b>Travelers</b> for years now.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://g.foolcdn.com/image/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fg.foolcdn.com%2Feditorial%2Fimages%2F627112%2Fprogressive-vs-comp-5-17-21.png&amp;w=700&amp;op=resize\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"455\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>PGR total return data by YCharts</span></p><p>Going back five years, Progressive's total return swamps the S&amp;P 500 and other competitors in the property and casualty insurance space. Progressive is a well-run company with healthy profit margins. Not only that, but since 2015, Progressive has outperformed the broader market, providing investors with a total return of 379% compared to the S&P 500's total return of 128%. Even after that run of success, its stock trades for a bargain price.Despite all that, Buffett and Berkshire don't own Progressive. Should you?A money-making machineProgressive continues to crush its competition by maintaining very attractive metrics on the policies that it underwrites. The company has done a tremendous job of growing its top and bottom lines since 2015, with revenue and net income growing by compound annual growth rates of 15% and 35%, respectively -- a testament to the insurer's skill at underwriting profitable insurance policies.One reason is an underappreciated focus on technology. While many companies have been coming out with telematics programs in recent years, Progressive was the company on the cutting edge. The company's Progressive Snapshot product, also known as usage-based insurance, was added in 2011, and is just one of the drivers of Progressive's growth over the decade.Extreme weather couldn't bring it downProgressive's growth was on full display in the first quarter, with strong top- and bottom-line figures. The insurer increased total revenue by 22.8%, bringing in $11.4 billion in total.This revenue growth was boosted by two things. First, net premium growth was up 10.5% from last year to $10.4 billion. Second, net gains from investments were $585 million, up from last year's net loss from investments of $553 million when asset prices plummeted in the early stages of the pandemic. Total expenses were up in the period as well, with losses and loss adjustment expenses increasing 15.5% to $7.1 billion. This was due largely to extreme weather events in the quarter. Despite this, net income was up 111% from last year to $1.5 billion.Winter storms in Oregon and Texas as well as tornadoes in Texas and Alabama caused significant losses to its property line of coverage in the first quarter. This was elevated due to $144.6 million in catastrophe losses, after reinsurance, which added 30.6 points to the combined ratio and brought this ratio on its property line of coverage to a brutal 115%. Combined ratio is a key metric in the insurance industry that measures a company's profitability and operating performance. A ratio below 100% means that the company is profitable, while a ratio over 100% means that the company is spending more on claims and operating expenses. The property line of coverage saw a $70 million loss in the quarter.However, investors need not worry. The company was buoyed by its bread and butter -- personal lines of auto and home coverage -- which brought in a $962 million profit, along with its commercial lines, which brought in another $228 million in profits. And despite the hit from its property line, its total combined ratio was a stellar 89.3% in the quarter. Even better, Progressive hasn't had an annual combined ratio over 100 since 2000, showing the insurer's ability to write profitable policies across two decades.A company worth holding in a variety of market environmentsSeveral financial observers have sounded the alarm on inflation lately, including former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers and Buffett himself during Berkshire's annual investors meeting.During inflationary times, insurance companies can perform better because they put excess cash to work to generate investment income. F1 will likely not be a blockbuster franchise as the sport is not as popular as soccer or football worldwide, but it should generate a steady stream of cash each year while also giving EA Sports the potential to expand its esports and mobile capabilities.</p>\n<p>The second acquisition was Glu Mobile for $2.1 billion. The mobile-focused studio generates over $500 million in annual bookings, so the acquisition looks like it was made at a reasonable valuation. Plus, it brings over 500 mobile game developers under EA's umbrella.</p>\n<p>Historically, EA has struggled with the mobile market. It made up only 12.6% of bookings over the last 12 months, even though it makes up 50% of the overall gaming market. If EA can leverage Glu's expertise, the company's mobile segment could grow substantially over the next few years through Glu's franchises and a revamp of EA's existing mobile titles.</p>\n<h2>3. Returning cash to shareholders</h2>\n<p>Over the last year, EA repurchased 5.6 million shares of its stock, bringing the total share count down to an estimated 287.6 million. The company has a strong history of reducing its shares outstanding (and therefore increasing the earnings attributed to remaining shareholders) as a way of returning cash to investors. Its share count has steadily come down since 2012, where it stood at 331 million, to below 288 million today.</p>\n<p>EA has also started paying a $0.17 quarterly dividend on top of its consistent buyback program. The yield is small, at about 0.5%, but with $4.5 billion in net cash (cash minus debt) and almost $2 billion in annual cash flow, EA has a clear path to grow its dividend in conjunction with its buyback program over the next decade.</p>\n<h2>4. Reasonable valuation</h2>\n<p>EA has a market cap just north of $40 billion. But if you take out the $4.5 billion in net cash -- which it won't need to fund operations -- that comes down to around $36 billion. Guidance for the next fiscal year is for $1.75 billion in operating cash flow, meaning that currently, EA's stock trades at a price-to-operating cash flow (P/OCF) of 20.5. This is not dirt cheap, but totally reasonable if you believe EA can consistently grow its business while also returning cash to shareholders through buybacks and dividends.</p>\n<p>Overall, there are a lot of reasons to like Electronic Arts prospects over the next decade. It has a high-growth franchise in <i>Apex Legends</i>, has acquired some great assets from Codemasters and Glu Mobile, and should continue to repurchase stock and pay a dividend. Yes, on March 11 of this year, CPNG stock closed at $49.25, nearly 41% above its $35 initial offering price.</p>\n<p>Therefore, the public market did its “job,” facilitating the IPO pop that early (and privileged) investors seek when taking a gamble on new ventures.</p>\n<p>But last week, Coupang shares closed down at $32.04, a worrying 8.4% below the initial offering price. Thankfully, a late surge going into the weekend left CPNG stock at $36.43. It trades this morning closer to $35. Is this the discount that prospective buyers are looking for?</p>\n<p>To get to the bottom of this, we must first acknowledge why the much-hyped CPNG stock has gone volatile. For its&nbsp;first earnings report&nbsp;as a publicly traded entity, Coupang brought a mixture of encouraging and eyebrow-raising results.</p>\n<p>On the plus side, Coupang rang up total net revenue of $4.2 billion for the quarter ended March 31, which was up 74% from the year-ago quarter. The novel coronavirus pandemic hit South Korea early and hard, so the robust comparison is to be expected. Nevertheless, that’s an impressive growth rate.</p>\n<p>On the not-so-pleasant end, though, Coupang suffered a net loss of $295 million, comparing very poorly to the $105 million net loss in the same period one year ago. Despite the red ink on its financials, management vowed to keep expanding.</p>\n<p>Is this confidence or is this unnecessary risk-taking?</p>\n<p><b>Coupang Competes in a Tough Market</b></p>\n<p>On the surface, it’s difficult to avoid the temptation of not giving CPNG stock the benefit of the doubt. For instance, Coupang co-founder and CEO Bom Kim is already a superstar. It’s not the easiest thing in the world to secure investment capital from SoftBank. Plus, Amazon doesn’t have a clear road into South Korea because of Coupang.</p>\n<p>Those are high honors that shouldn’t be ignored. But they also don’t make the investment narrative for CPNG stock.</p>\n<p>According to a<i>Bloomberg</i>report, Kim plans to build on the company’s lead in fast deliveries and broad selections. More specifically, “Coupang aims to add 50% to its e-commerce infrastructure in a single year, compared with what it built since its founding in 2010.”</p>\n<p>Obviously, this is going to rack up the net losses, with the idea that in the future, Coupang will become profitable. However, my concern is that it may not be such an easy road.</p>\n<p>From the company’s Form&nbsp;10-Q filing&nbsp;with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Coupang noted:</p>\n<blockquote>\n “We also earn subscription revenue from memberships to our Rocket WOW membership program, which provides customers with access to benefits such as access to Rocket Fresh, no minimum spend for Rocket Delivery, and free shipping on returns, which is also included in net other revenue.”\n</blockquote>\n<p>In particular, I’m hung up on the free shipping on returns. For one thing, the economic situation in South Korea is precarious, with&nbsp;household debt to GDP&nbsp;ballooning to 101.3% in the second quarter of 2020. Pre-pandemic, this figure was below 100%. And throughout 2011, it was no higher than 83%.</p>\n<p>Well before the pandemic,young Koreans were getting heavily into debt. This implies two headwinds for Coupang: in the future, perhaps in the near future, retail sales will decline and product returns will increase. That’s a double-whammy that CPNG stock could do without.</p>\n<p><b>CPNG Needs Sensible Leadership</b></p>\n<p>In no way am I a hater of Coupang. I covered this company when it was a private entity and I acknowledged its many positive qualities. At the same time, I also noted that the leadership team was taking financial risks,eschewing profitability concerns for outright growth.</p>\n<p>That could work in a credible bull market. Returning cash to shareholders</h2>\n<p>Over the last year, EA repurchased 5.6 million shares of its stock, bringing the total share count down to an estimated 287.6 million. The company has a strong history of reducing its shares outstanding (and therefore increasing the earnings attributed to remaining shareholders) as a way of returning cash to investors. Its share count has steadily come down since 2012, where it stood at 331 million, to below 288 million today.</p>\n<p>EA has also started paying a $0.17 quarterly dividend on top of its consistent buyback program. The yield is small, at about 0.5%, but with $4.5 billion in net cash (cash minus debt) and almost $2 billion in annual cash flow, EA has a clear path to grow its dividend in conjunction with its buyback program over the next decade.</p>\n<h2>4. Reasonable valuation</h2>\n<p>EA has a market cap just north of $40 billion. But if you take out the $4.5 billion in net cash -- which it won't need to fund operations -- that comes down to around $36 billion. Guidance for the next fiscal year is for $1.75 billion in operating cash flow, meaning that currently, EA's stock trades at a price-to-operating cash flow (P/OCF) of 20.5.
