what has simultaneously been one of Wall Street’s most bizarre and yet transformative phenomena, the rise of meme stocks -- loosely defined as publicly traded securities with incredibly strong social media followings -- quickly captured the world’s attention. Reportedly, at the heart of this movement’s ethos is the universal desire to restore equity from injustice. But its latest venture could undo whatever good it initially sparked.\nKicking off the meme stock spectacle was of course GameStop (NYSE:GME), the video game and consumer electronics retailer. For years, GameStop had struggled for relevance as the underlying industry shifted toward e-commerce revenue channels. Then, the pandemic struck, derailing what was a slight hint of a comeback as GME entered 2020. Not surprisingly, short traders saw a profit-taking opportunity, given GameStop’s many non-pandemic related headwinds.\nHowever, chatter spread on social media forum, regarding bearish traders’ overexuberance toward the GME short play. Through coordinated action, the little guys on the opposite side of the trade attempted a short squeeze, or the deliberate bidding up of a stock to force short traders to cover their position, thereby inducing more bullishness. Such moves, though extremely risky, can be extraordinarily lucrative.\nAs Jamie Cohen, a digital culture expert with a PhD in cultural and media studies stated in an interview with Time, this was more than just about profiteering. Rather, it was about fighting back against a corrupt system that average everyday individuals felt contributed to their disenfranchisement.\nAn article from TechCrunch.com added weight to this underlying morality of meme stocks, reporting that social media users relished their newfound contrarianism. To them, this was to some degree revenge, delivering a magnitude of comeuppance that the Occupy Wall Street movement years earlier could not.\nLater, AMC Entertainment (NYSE:AMC) surged on a similar justification. As well, many meme stock participants saw a higher purpose in their market activism, essentially protecting their favorite childhood institutions from the ravages of corporate greed.\nIndeed, the movement had some level of moral credibility, until it wandered into the lap of Geo Group (NYSE:GEO). (See Geo Group stock chart)\nMeme Stocks Take a Questionable Turn\nAs a private prison, Geo Group doesn’t enjoy many overt backers. Even in the best of times, GEO was a controversial investment. Today, it’s considered nearly odious. For instance, both former President Trump and current President Biden championed criminal justice reform during the 2020 electoral campaign. Early this year, Biden signed an executive order to phase out private prisons.\nJust from a purely economic perspective, then, an investment in GEO would make little sense. As they did with GME earlier, short traders sniffed an opportunity. This time, though, some of them must have imagined that the Reddit crowd would leave them alone. Unlike other meme stocks, GEO offered no discernible moral value.\nYet once again, the bears got caught flatfooted. Though short traders managed to drive down GEO to around the $5 level, the social media crowd sprang into action. At one point, shares closed up near $9 before settling around the $7 range.\nWhile this signifies another victory for traders on Reddit, it’s also possible that it could represent a turning point. For prior meme stocks, the moral directive was clear. By bidding up heavily shorted stocks, social media users could save companies, which in turn would save jobs and in some cases entire industries.\nWhat if a Company Doesn’t Deserve to be Handed a Lifeline?\nFor that question, Reddit traders can point to the capitalist ethos. However, by doing so, they surrender the moral high ground, basically making them no better than the short traders they earlier claimed to loathe.\nMore critically, research over the years from sources such as McKinsey & Company reveals that young consumers are willing to pay more for sustainable goods and support brands that practice environmental and social responsibility. Logically, this suggests that younger investors’ advocacy for meme stocks can only go so far.\nPerhaps it might even reverse.\nWall Street's Take on Geo\nThe analyst rating consensus on GEO stock is a Moderate Buy, based on 1 Buy and 1 Sell rating. The average analyst Geo price target is $11.63, implying a 52.6% upside.\nAt the same time, bloggers are more enthusiastic about the stock. According to Tipranks' Blogger Sentiment measure, GEO blogger sentiment is 77% bullish, above the sector average of 70%.\n\nShowing the Cards Too Early\nThe biggest threat to meme stocks might not even be the underlying morality or lack thereof. Instead, it’s that the activists are exposing themselves as predictable and one-dimensional.\nIf there was a substantive ethos driving the meme stock narrative, the challenge for the Wall Street short trader is to crack it. On the other hand, if the only factor for meme-ing something is a stock’s short interest, the absence of creativity in the playbook would presumably hand the advantage over to the bears.\nUltimately, this social media-driven phenomenon appears as a modern-day adaptation of George Orwell’s satirical novella Animal Farm. What started out as a seemingly sincere attempt at restoring financial equity might have ironically devolved into little more than a cynical cash grab.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":826,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":165721102,"gmtCreate":1624158468006,"gmtModify":1631889075514,"author":{"id":"3580796057108749","authorId":"3580796057108749","name":"Hotpillows","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Busy week indeed[害羞] [害羞] [害羞] ","listText":"Busy week indeed[害羞] [害羞] [害羞] ","text":"Busy week indeed[害羞] [害羞] [害羞]","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":6,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/165721102","repostId":"1199331995","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":687,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":162897906,"gmtCreate":1624054660405,"gmtModify":1631889075520,"author":{"id":"3580796057108749","authorId":"3580796057108749","name":"Hotpillows","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Nicee[财迷] [财迷] ","listText":"Nicee[财迷] [财迷] ","text":"Nicee[财迷] [财迷]","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/162897906","repostId":"2144774740","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":460,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":166223135,"gmtCreate":1624013194127,"gmtModify":1631893022174,"author":{"id":"3580796057108749","authorId":"3580796057108749","name":"Hotpillows","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Oh no[惊讶] ","listText":"Oh no[惊讶] ","text":"Oh no[惊讶]","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/166223135","repostId":"1176081814","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":580,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":168836501,"gmtCreate":1623970632303,"gmtModify":1631893022195,"author":{"id":"3580796057108749","authorId":"3580796057108749","name":"Hotpillows","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Nice[财迷] ","listText":"Nice[财迷] ","text":"Nice[财迷]","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/168836501","repostId":"1133589209","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1133589209","pubTimestamp":1623938567,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1133589209?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-06-17 22:02","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Why Ford's Stock Is Moving Today","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1133589209","media":"benzinga","summary":"Ford Motor Company shares are trading higher after the company issued strong second-quarter guidance","content":"
Ford Motor Company shares are trading higher after the company issued strong second-quarter guidance ahead of its fireside chat Thursday at the Deutsche Bank Auto Conference.
\n
Here are some key takeaways:
\n
\n
Ford sees adjusted EBIT as being significantly better year-over-year.
\n
Ford highlighted strong customer reservations for four new vehicles: a full-size Bronco SUV, a battery-electric F-150 Lightning pickup, a Maverick compact truck and all-electric E-Transit commercial van.
\n
Ford said improvement in autos is being driven by lower-than-anticipated costs and favorable market factors. Despite navigating its way through Black Monday in 1987, the dot-com bubble, the Great Recession, and more recently the coronavirus crash, the average annual total return for the benchmark S&P 500 since 1980, including dividends, is north of 11%.
\n
Not surprisingly, we see this optimism readily apparent in Wall Street's ratings on stocks. According to FactSet, more than half of all stocks carry a consensus buy rating, 38% have the equivalent of a hold rating, and just 7% are rated as sells. Yet, history shows that far more than 7% of stocks will eventually head lower.
\n
Based on Wall Street's consensus price targets, the following five ultra-popular stocks are all expected to lose value over the coming 12 months.
\n

\n
\n
Palantir Technologies: Implied downside of 12%
\n
Since its direct listing in late September 2020, data-mining company Palantir Technologies (NYSE:PLTR) has been a favorite among growth and retail investors. But if Wall Street's one-year consensus price target proves accurate, Palantir will head in reverse by up to 12%.
\n
The likeliest reason Wall Street is tempering expectations on Palantir is valuation. Specifically, Palantir ended June 17 with a market cap of nearly $48 billion, but is on track to bring in perhaps $1.5 billion in full-year sales in 2021. That's a multiple of about 32 times sales. Even if Palantir continues to grow its top-line at 30% annually, it could take years for this price-to-sales multiple to come down to anywhere close to the average for cloud stocks.
\n
Another possible concern is the growth potential for its government-focused Gotham platform. Big government contract wins in the U.S. have been primarily responsible for Palantir's exceptional growth rate. However, there remains an outside chance that President Joe Biden may curb funding to some of the federal agencies that employ Palantir's services.
\n
Over the long run, I'm optimistic and believe Palantir's platform is unlike anything else available. But tempering near-term expectations given its valuation premium may be warranted.
\n

\n
\n
Moderna: Implied downside of 11%
\n
Biotech stock Moderna (NASDAQ:MRNA) is arguably the biggest beneficiary of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. It's one of only three drugmakers to currently have their COVID-19 vaccine approved on an emergency-use authorization (EUA) basis in the United States. But if Wall Street's consensus 12-month price target is correct, it's stock is also on its way to a double-digit decline.
\n
Why the lack of love from Wall Street? The answer looks to be analysts looking to the future. While Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine is a mainstay in the U.S., and it's likely to play a clear role in other markets, time might prove the company's enemy. Over time, new vaccines are expected to come onto the scene, which'll eat away at Moderna's potential pool of patients.
\n
The other worry is that no one is exactly certain how long COVID-19 vaccine immunity will last. If it's a year, Moderna is unlikely to be the only drugmaker supplying booster shots. Meanwhile, if it's longer than a year, it means reduced sales opportunities for the company.
\n
Based solely on Wall Street's earnings per share consensus in 2021 and 2022, Moderna appears reasonably priced. But with the company staring down a potentially significant haircut in revenue next year as new drugmakers enter the space, caution is advised.
\n

\n
\n
GameStop: Implied downside of 71%
\n
This will probably come as a shock to no one, but Reddit favorite GameStop (NYSE:GME) is fully expected to fall flat on its face. Even though Wall Street's consensus price target for the company has quintupled in recent months, it still implies up to 71% downside over the next year.
\n
The biggest issue for GameStop is that its valuation has completely detached from its underlying fundamentals. While it's not uncommon for stocks to trade on emotion for short periods of time, operating performance is what always dictates the long-term movement in the share price of a stock. When it comes to operating performance, GameStop has been a dud.
\n
Although the company's first-quarter fiscal results highlighted a 25% net sales increase from the prior-year period, total sales for the company have been falling precipitously for years. That's because video game retailer GameStop recognized the shift to digital gaming too late, and it's now stuck with its massive portfolio of brick-and-mortar gaming stores. Even though e-commerce sales have been a bright spot for the company, slashing costs and closing stores remains its No. 1 priority.
\n
With sufficient cash, bankruptcy isn't a concern for GameStop. But without any true top-line growth and the company still losing money, it's an impossible sell at its current price tag.
\n

\n
\n
Ocugen: Implied downside of 18%
\n
Volatile clinical-stage biotech stock Ocugen (NASDAQ:OCGN) may also be in for an unpleasant next 12 months. The company behind an experimental COVID-19 vaccine (Covaxin) and a trio of internally developed eye-blindness candidates is expected to shed 18% of its value, if Wall Street's consensus price target is correct.
\n
Arguably the biggest issue for Ocugen is the clinical update the company issued on June 10 concerning Covaxin. Even though partner Bharat Biotech led a large clinical study in India that yielded an overall efficacy of 78%, along with 100% efficacy in preventing severe forms of COVID-19, Ocugen announced on June 10 that it would forgo seeking an EUA in the U.S. and would instead file for a biologics license application. In other words, Ocugen's path to a quick emergency approval in the U.S. just flew out the window.
\n
What's more, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's requested additional information and data on Covaxin. This is a fancy of saying that Ocugen will very likely have to run a clinical study in the U.S. prior to submitting Covaxin for approval. That means added costs and an even longer wait before Ocugen has a chance to penetrate the lucrative U.S. market.
\n
Though it's impossible to predict how long COVID-19 vaccine immunity will last, Ocugen's chances of being a significant player in the U.S. COVID-19 vaccine space are dwindling.
\n

\n
\n
NVIDIA: Implied downside of 3%
\n
Don't adjust your computer, laptop, or smartphone screens -- that really says NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA). Following its incredible run higher (NVIDIA has doubled over the past year), graphics processing unit giant NVIDIA closed 3% above Wall Street's consensus price target, as of June 17.
\n
One reason for tempered expectations at this point has to be valuation. Even with NVIDIA crushing expectations and seeing strong PC gaming demand, sales growth is expected to slow from an estimated 49% in fiscal 2022 to a high single digit percentage in each of the next two fiscal years. In fact, the company closed at nearly 20 times projected sales for the current fiscal year. That's a bit optimistic given an expected sales growth slowdown.
\n
Perhaps the other reason Wall Street expects NVIDIA to go sideways is the company's cryptocurrency mining chip segment. While sales of crypto chips could hit $400 million in the current quarter, demand is entirely dependent on the hype surrounding digital currencies and the favorability of technical charts. Despite navigating its way through Black Monday in 1987, the dot-com bubble, the Great Recession, and more recently the coronavirus crash, the average annual total return for the benchmark S&P 500 since 1980, including dividends, is north of 11%.\nNot surprisingly, we see this optimism readily apparent in Wall Street's ratings on stocks. According to FactSet, more than half of all stocks carry a consensus buy rating, 38% have the equivalent of a hold rating, and just 7% are rated as sells. Yet, history shows that far more than 7% of stocks will eventually head lower.\nBased on Wall Street's consensus price targets, the following five ultra-popular stocks are all expected to lose value over the coming 12 months.\n\nImage source: Getty Images.\nPalantir Technologies: Implied downside of 12%\nSince its direct listing in late September 2020, data-mining company Palantir Technologies (NYSE:PLTR) has been a favorite among growth and retail investors. But if Wall Street's one-year consensus price target proves accurate, Palantir will head in reverse by up to 12%.\nThe likeliest reason Wall Street is tempering expectations on Palantir is valuation. Specifically, Palantir ended June 17 with a market cap of nearly $48 billion, but is on track to bring in perhaps $1.5 billion in full-year sales in 2021. That's a multiple of about 32 times sales. Even if Palantir continues to grow its top-line at 30% annually, it could take years for this price-to-sales multiple to come down to anywhere close to the average for cloud stocks.\nAnother possible concern is the growth potential for its government-focused Gotham platform. Big government contract wins in the U.S. have been primarily responsible for Palantir's exceptional growth rate. However, there remains an outside chance that President Joe Biden may curb funding to some of the federal agencies that employ Palantir's services.\nOver the long run, I'm optimistic and believe Palantir's platform is unlike anything else available. But tempering near-term expectations given its valuation premium may be warranted.\n\nImage source: Getty Images.\nModerna: Implied downside of 11%\nBiotech stock Moderna (NASDAQ:MRNA) is arguably the biggest beneficiary of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. It's one of only three drugmakers to currently have their COVID-19 vaccine approved on an emergency-use authorization (EUA) basis in the United States. But if Wall Street's consensus 12-month price target is correct, it's stock is also on its way to a double-digit decline.\nWhy the lack of love from Wall Street? The answer looks to be analysts looking to the future. While Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine is a mainstay in the U.S., and it's likely to play a clear role in other markets, time might prove the company's enemy. Over time, new vaccines are expected to come onto the scene, which'll eat away at Moderna's potential pool of patients.\nThe other worry is that no one is exactly certain how long COVID-19 vaccine immunity will last. If it's a year, Moderna is unlikely to be the only drugmaker supplying booster shots. Meanwhile, if it's longer than a year, it means reduced sales opportunities for the company.\nBased solely on Wall Street's earnings per share consensus in 2021 and 2022, Moderna appears reasonably priced. But with the company staring down a potentially significant haircut in revenue next year as new drugmakers enter the space, caution is advised.\n\nImage source: Getty Images.\nGameStop: Implied downside of 71%\nThis will probably come as a shock to no one, but Reddit favorite GameStop (NYSE:GME) is fully expected to fall flat on its face. Even though Wall Street's consensus price target for the company has quintupled in recent months, it still implies up to 71% downside over the next year.\nThe biggest issue for GameStop is that its valuation has completely detached from its underlying fundamentals. While it's not uncommon for stocks to trade on emotion for short periods of time, operating performance is what always dictates the long-term movement in the share price of a stock. When it comes to operating performance, GameStop has been a dud.\nAlthough the company's first-quarter fiscal results highlighted a 25% net sales increase from the prior-year period, total sales for the company have been falling precipitously for years. That's because video game retailer GameStop recognized the shift to digital gaming too late, and it's now stuck with its massive portfolio of brick-and-mortar gaming stores. Even though e-commerce sales have been a bright spot for the company, slashing costs and closing stores remains its No. 1 priority.\nWith sufficient cash, bankruptcy isn't a concern for GameStop. But without any true top-line growth and the company still losing money, it's an impossible sell at its current price tag.\n\nImage source: Getty Images.\nOcugen: Implied downside of 18%\nVolatile clinical-stage biotech stock Ocugen (NASDAQ:OCGN) may also be in for an unpleasant next 12 months. The company behind an experimental COVID-19 vaccine (Covaxin) and a trio of internally developed eye-blindness candidates is expected to shed 18% of its value, if Wall Street's consensus price target is correct.\nArguably the biggest issue for Ocugen is the clinical update the company issued on June 10 concerning Covaxin. In other words, Ocugen's path to a quick emergency approval in the U.S. just flew out the window.\nWhat's more, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's requested additional information and data on Covaxin. This is a fancy of saying that Ocugen will very likely have to run a clinical study in the U.S. prior to submitting Covaxin for approval. That means added costs and an even longer wait before Ocugen has a chance to penetrate the lucrative U.S. market.\nThough it's impossible to predict how long COVID-19 vaccine immunity will last, Ocugen's chances of being a significant player in the U.S. COVID-19 vaccine space are dwindling.\n\nImage source: Getty Images.\nNVIDIA: Implied downside of 3%\nDon't adjust your computer, laptop, or smartphone screens -- that really says NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA). Following its incredible run higher (NVIDIA has doubled over the past year), graphics processing unit giant NVIDIA closed 3% above Wall Street's consensus price target, as of June 17.\nOne reason for tempered expectations at this point has to be valuation. That's a bit optimistic given an expected sales growth slowdown.\nPerhaps the other reason Wall Street expects NVIDIA to go sideways is the company's cryptocurrency mining chip segment. While sales of crypto chips could hit $400 million in the current quarter, demand is entirely dependent on the hype surrounding digital currencies and the favorability of technical charts. Crypto is just as well known for its long bear markets as it is for the big gains it's delivered over the past decade. If another lull strikes, a fast-growing ancillary segment for NVIDA could easily become a drag.\nFor what it's worth, I see no fundamental reasons to sell NVIDIA if you're already a long-term shareholder. But if you're on the outside looking in, I don't exactly see $746 as an attractive entry point, either.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":828,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":165721102,"gmtCreate":1624158468006,"gmtModify":1631889075514,"author":{"id":"3580796057108749","authorId":"3580796057108749","name":"Hotpillows","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Busy week indeed[害羞] [害羞] [害羞] ","listText":"Busy week indeed[害羞] [害羞] [害羞] ","text":"Busy week indeed[害羞] [害羞] [害羞]","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":6,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/165721102","repostId":"1199331995","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1199331995","pubTimestamp":1624065374,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1199331995?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-06-19 09:16","market":"us","language":"en","title":"U.S. IPO Week Ahead: Billion-Dollar Deals Come To Market In A 12 IPO Week","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1199331995","media":"Renaissance","summary":"12 IPOs are scheduled to raise $5.6 billion in the week ahead led by two billion-dollar deals.Chinese freight platform Full Truck Alliance plans to raise $1.5 billion at a $19.7 billion market cap. This comes as Singapore banks have risen about 13 to 17 per cent year to date to outperform the Straits Times Index by 4 to 8 per cent.\n\"We think the increasing pace of Covid-19 vaccine roll-outs across the region, as a gauge of a timeline to regional economic reopenings and hopes of credit cost write-backs in FY2021, contributed to the rest of the share price optimism,\" said CGS-CIMB on Wednesday.\nThe brokerage is expecting net interest margin upside as early as FY2023 amid the US Federal Reserve's signal on sooner-than-expected rate hikes.\nJust two days after the Fed signalled last week for at least two interest rate hikes by end-FY2023, St Louis Fed president James Bullard said he sees an initial rate hike happening as soon as late FY2022, in expectation of inflation picking up faster than expected.\nWhile the Fed would only raise interest rates on the back of maximum employment and persistent 2 per cent inflation, Mr Bullard views the strengthened economy and corresponding inflation forecasts of 2.5 to 3 per cent through to FY2022 in the US as not merely transitory.\nFor Singapore banks, this implies a possible rerating cycle as early as Q2 to Q3 this year, in case hikes start in FY2022.\nCGS-CIMB has kept its overweight rating on the sector - staying invested to \"reap the economic rebound ahead\" as social distancing measures are eased across the region, while share price momentum from rate hike expectations sets in.\nUOB is its top pick among the trio; the bank is a \"key beneficiary\" of Asean economic reopenings, which should close its valuation gap with peers given investors' concerns on asset quality.\nMeanwhile, the Monetary Authority of Singapore is due to announce its decision on whether or not to lift its dividend cap on banks before the upcoming second-quarter results.\nWhile current conditions are ripe enough to expect dividend restrictions to be eased, there may be some profit-taking, said CGS-CIMB.\nA key downside risk is asset quality deterioration as a result of prolonged economic closures.\nDBS and OCBC shares were trading in positive territory on Thursday afternoon, up 0.6 per cent and 0.4 per cent respectively to S$29.49 and S$11.86 as at 1.35pm. And the transportation industry contributes roughly half of all the business for integrated oil and gas companies, which handle all three aspects of the process from exploration to production to refining, according to Giacomo Romeo, integrated oil and gas analyst with Jefferies Group.
\n
Electric passenger vehicles such as the Tesla (TSLA) -Get Report Model 3, Nissan’s (NSANY) Leaf, Hyundai’s (HYMTF) Kona Electric and others are expected to account for 86% of all passenger vehicles on the road by 2050,up dramaticallyfrom just 1% last year. Meanwhile, electric vans are expected to soar to 84% of all vans from 0% last year, while 79% of buses and 59% of heavy trucks will be electric, up from 2% and 0%, respectively, according to IEA’s report “Net Zero by 2050: A Roadmap for the Global Energy Sector.”
\n
Catalysts driving this growth in the U.S. are expected to come from car manufacturers increasing both the total number of electric vehicles and the number of models they offer, government agencies offering incentives to consumers to purchase electric vehicles and support from President Biden to increase the use of electric vehicles, according to Edmunds. The automotive research firm released a report this year that found the U.S. electric vehicle market is on track to post record sales this year, with EVs expected to represent 2.5% of U.S. vehicle sales this year, up from 1.9% in 2020.
\n
“Price and choice of models are the biggest barriers to buying EVs for consumers,” said Jessica Caldwell, executive director of insights for Edmunds. “You always pay more for EVs and once people start shopping for a car, they start with the intent of buying an EV, but when they begin to compare they see they can get a bigger one with more features than an EV. People equate bigger with better and think it’s a nicer car and more worthy.\"
\n
Recently, consumers’ preference hasswung to larger vehiclesand those tend to be gas-powered. But this year, for the first time, consumers will have the option of purchasing electric trucks, which expands the consumer EV categories beyond just passenger cars and SUVs, Caldwell noted.
\n
By 2030, EV sales worldwide are expected to reach 31.1 million and represent approximately 32% of all new car sales, up from 2.5 million EVs sold last year, according to Deloitte Insights’ “Electric Vehicles Setting a Course for 2030” report.
\n
However, oil and gas companies, especially Royal Dutch Shell (RDS.A) -Get Report and British Petroleum (BP ADR), likely won't go the way of the dinosaurs as demand for their fossil fuels takes a deep dive, analysts say.
\n
“I’m not sure the transportation industry will get to 100% EV,” said Jamie Hamilton, director and leader in the UK automotive sector strategy and operations for Deloitte. “Passenger cars may get there in the next five to 10 years depending on prices coming down and charging infrastructure rollouts, but freight and heavy vehicles may not” due to their weight.
\n
Dinosaurs Learn a New Dance
\n
The oil and gas industry is exploring a number of workarounds to avoid the financial hit from a potential decline in oil and gas demand brought on by electric vehicles. They received a taste of what a big dip in transportation demand would look like when COVID-19 hit and people hunkered down at home versus heading into the office or traveling.
\n
“Most of the oil and gas industry already had an eye on the changes going on in the larger market for some time, so the growth of EVs is not a surprise. But with the decline in driving and commuting with COVID, this was more stark than people predicted,” said Kate Hardin, executive director of Deloitte Energy, Resources and Industrials research center. “That took commuting down by 40% to 50% in some communities.”
\n
Hardin said there has been a lot of discussion among large oil and gas companies to explore new business models, such as developing solar energy, battery technology and energy storage.
\n
Many fossil fuel companies are investing in power generation, such as renewable energy including solar and wind, Romeo said. Currently, the oil and gas industry is investing 15% of its total capital into power generation, and that is expected to increase to 25% after 2025.
\n
However, the power generation business has returns of 10% at best, while the downstream business of refining fossil fuels has returns of 10% to 15% and the upstream business of extracting and producing the fuels about 20%, Romeo said. While the oil and gas business generally has higher returns, Rome said it is also far more volatile than the power generation business.
\n
Additionally, the cost of capital for the oil and gas business is higher than that for the renewables industry, due to increasing environmental, social and governance (ESG)- related concerns in the oil and gas business, and declining interest from investors.
\n
“There is always a balance that has to be weighed,” Romeo said.
\n
One-Stop Shop Strategy
\n
The larger oil and gas companies are also evaluating the design and use of their retail gas stations as consumers’ needs and behavior are expected to change.
\n
Companies with a large network of gas stations are considering transitioning them to EV charging stations, and those that have convenience stores as part of their stations expect to make even more money off of them once they are converted. That’s because charging an EV typically takes significantly longer than filling an internal combustion engine vehicle with gas.
\n
Companies in Europe and the U.S. actually get more revenue from their non-fuel business at their retail stations than they do from fuel, Romeo said.
\n
“Oil companies see [that] as people charge their cars, they will spend more time in retail stores drinking coffee, shopping for groceries,” Romeo said. “BP and Shell are already talking about this.”
\n
However, people will also be using retail charging stations less often because they can charge their cars at home, at work or at other places that have charging stations.
\n
Other Survival Strategies
\n
Biofuels, which are produced from organic material such as corn, other vegetables and animal fats, are another area that oil and gas companies are exploring. For the aviation industry, biofuel is currently being mixed in with traditional jet fuel, but Boeing BA, for example, plans to fly its fleet using 100% biofuel by 2030, according to Reuters.
\n
Biofuels have high returns on investment too, Romeo noted. One company, Finland-based Neste (OTC: NTOIY), recently moved away from traditional refining to become the world’s largest renewable diesel producer, generating 30% returns compared to 12% for its traditional refining business.
\n
Integrated oil and gas companies, which handle all three aspects of the process including exploration, production and refining, are also investing in hydrogen and batteries. Because renewable energy sources such as solar and wind do not provide a constant stream of energy, the energy they generate needs to be stored in either hydrogen or batteries for later use.
\n
Storing energy can be profitable since it allows companies like Shell and British Petroleum to act as energy traders that leverage supply and demand. Shell, for example, plans to increase its power trading business from 255 Terawatts per hour (TWh) now to 560TWh in 2030, Romeo said.
\n
The battery energy storage market is expected to reach $19.7 billion by 2027, according to Fortune Business Insights. However, that’s a drop in the bucket compared to the global oil and gas exploration and production market, which is expected to reach an estimated $2.1 trillion this year, according to IBISWorld.
\n
Which Oil Companies Could Still Thrive
\n
Potentialwinners in making the transitionas electric vehicles eat into their fossil fuel business include Shell.
\n
“I like Shell -- I believe they see energy transition from the right angle,” Romeo said. “They view themselves as an energy center that delivers lower-carbon energy solutions. They don’t seek to own capacity but instead, they plan to deliver de-carbonization solutions to their customers via a combination of renewable power, carbon credits, and other offsets.”
\n
Edmunds’ Caldwell believes the traditional oil and gas companies have some staying power, despite recent moves by states and nations to limit the sale of new gas-powered vehicles over the next several decades.
\n
“Gas-powered vehicles are not going away overnight. The bans are on new vehicle sales and not ownership of gas-powered vehicles. I think there will be a long window for the oil and gas industries to pivot. It is not a flip of the switch and they’re gone,” Caldwell said.
","source":"lsy1610613172068","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
What the Growing Ascendance of Electric Vehicles Means for Oil and Gas Stocks
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nWhat the Growing Ascendance of Electric Vehicles Means for Oil and Gas Stocks\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-06-24 15:01 GMT+8 The Street\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
As Tesla and other carmakers ramp up the number of EVs on the road, oil and gas companies are trying out a host of strategies to compensate.\n\nElectric vehicles (EVs) are poised to run over the oil and...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"BP":"英国石油","TSLA":"特斯拉","RDS.A":"荷兰皇家壳牌石油A类股","NSANY":"日产汽车","HYMTF":"Hyundai Motor Co., Ltd."},"source_url":"https://www.thestreet.com/investing/what-growing-ascendance-of-evs-means-for-oil-and-gas-stocks","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1170018171","content_text":"As Tesla and other carmakers ramp up the number of EVs on the road, oil and gas companies are trying out a host of strategies to compensate.\n\nElectric vehicles (EVs) are poised to run over the oil and gas industry -- at least that’s what it seems like at first glance.\nBy 2050, the vast majority of transport vehicles on the road across the globe are expected to be electric, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). And the transportation industry contributes roughly half of all the business for integrated oil and gas companies, which handle all three aspects of the process from exploration to production to refining, according to Giacomo Romeo, integrated oil and gas analyst with Jefferies Group.\nElectric passenger vehicles such as the Tesla (TSLA) -Get Report Model 3, Nissan’s (NSANY) Leaf, Hyundai’s (HYMTF) Kona Electric and others are expected to account for 86% of all passenger vehicles on the road by 2050,up dramaticallyfrom just 1% last year. Meanwhile, electric vans are expected to soar to 84% of all vans from 0% last year, while 79% of buses and 59% of heavy trucks will be electric, up from 2% and 0%, respectively, according to IEA’s report “Net Zero by 2050: A Roadmap for the Global Energy Sector.”\nCatalysts driving this growth in the U.S. are expected to come from car manufacturers increasing both the total number of electric vehicles and the number of models they offer, government agencies offering incentives to consumers to purchase electric vehicles and support from President Biden to increase the use of electric vehicles, according to Edmunds. The bank’s analysts said they “hold a very bullish call on earnings for this year” in a note published Monday, and listed their top global picks across a variety of sectors.\nThe analysts, led by JPMorgan’s Mislav Matejka, noted “substantial increases” in 2021 earnings per share (EPS) projections — a key indicator of a company’s profitability— for so-called cyclical stocks and said this trend looked set to continue. Cyclical stocks are those that tend to track the economy’s overall performance.\n“We believe that the next leg higher in equities is upon us,” they added.\nHere are a dozen of their top picks across Europe:\nFinancials\nJPMorgan likes British firms Barclays, M&G and Jupiter, as well as French companies Societe Generaleand BNP Paribas. Also on its list is Dutch firmING, and JPM is overweight all of the stocks. “Sector looks cheap, has underperformed, earnings are improving and stands to benefit from rising bond yields,” the bank’s analysts stated.\nUtilities\nThey also like electricity firms Enel and EDP, and are overweight-rated on the sector as a whole.\nMaterials and industrials\nThe bank’s picks include steel firm Arcelor Mittal, auto maker Volvo, construction materials firm Saint Gobain and electrical supplier Rexel, all of which are rated overweight.\n‘An opportunity’\nJPMorgan’s analysts noted that earnings per share “momentum” was likely reaching a peak, however this should not be negative for stocks. “Activity is expected to remain significantly above trend for the foreseeable future. This could ensure that forward earnings projections keep advancing, and that EPS revisions do not move back persistently into negative territory,” they wrote.\nThere is a widening gap between earnings between cyclicals and defensives — defensives tend to provide consistent earnings regardless of the market in general — with cyclical stocks “overwhelmingly” outperforming defensives, JPMorgan said. And the bank’s analysts think the gap will remain wide: “We do not expect the gap to close through forward earnings of Cyclicals peaking, especially not while the growth delivery is substantially above trend,” the analysts stated.\n“Therefore, this could be an opportunity, in particular if we get a resumption of the upmove in bond yields in 2H [second half],” they added. Investors often expect stock prices to fall when bond yields rise.\n“Regionally, we expect the outperformance of Eurozone vs the US so far this year to continue, in contrast to last year, when we were OW [overweight] US vs Europe,” the analysts added.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":567,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":857581577,"gmtCreate":1635549207755,"gmtModify":1635549207755,"author":{"id":"3580796057108749","authorId":"3580796057108749","name":"Hotpillows","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Nicee","listText":"Nicee","text":"Nicee","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/857581577","repostId":"850756569","repostType":1,"repost":{"id":850756569,"gmtCreate":1634631211448,"gmtModify":1635853120757,"author":{"id":"36984908995200","authorId":"36984908995200","name":"小虎活动","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4f487d6799e86204e80dfde72e6040c0","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false},"themes":[],"title":"[Halloween Game] Trade or Treat!","htmlText":"Hello, dear Tigers!
