However, it might be difficult for investors to separate the winners from the losers if they don't understand how the semiconductor supply chain works.</p>\n<p>Today, I'll highlight three chip stocks that operate in very different parts of the semiconductor market, why they're all growing, and why they could still generate even bigger returns next year.</p>\n<h2>1. ASML</h2>\n<p><b>ASML Holding</b> (NASDAQ:ASML) is a Dutch semiconductor equipment maker. It's the world's largest manufacturer of lithography machines, which are used to etch circuit patterns onto silicon wafers. It's also the only manufacturer of high-end extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines, which are required to manufacture the world's smallest chips.</p>\n<p>The world's most advanced chip foundries -- including <b>Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing</b> (NYSE:TSM), <b>Samsung</b>, and <b>Intel</b> (NASDAQ:INTC) -- all use ASML's EUV machines, which cost about $150,000 each and require several planes to ship. ASML's dominance of this crucial chipmaking technology, which it refined over the past three decades, makes it a linchpin of the global semiconductor market.</p>\n<p>ASML's revenue rose 8% in 2019 and 18% in 2020, and it anticipates about 35% growth this year. It's selling EUV systems as rapidly as it can produce them, and a growing mix of those higher-margin devices boosted its gross margin from 44.7% in 2019 to 52.2% in the first nine months of 2021.</p>\n<p>ASML's stock price has more than doubled over the past 12 months, and it isn't cheap at 45 times forward earnings. However, this stock could still have plenty of upside potential as the chip shortage drags on -- since it will be impossible to resolve the crisis without buying significantly more machines from ASML.</p>\n<h2>2. UMC</h2>\n<p>ASML's top client is TSMC, the world's largest contract chipmaker and another linchpin of the semiconductor market. However, TSMC's smaller rival <b>United Microelectronics</b> (NYSE:UMC) is a more underrated play on the same trend.</p>\n<p>Unlike TSMC -- which manufactures the world's smallest chips for fabless chipmakers like <b>Advanced Micro Devices</b> and<b> Apple</b> -- UMC primarily manufactures older, larger, and cheaper chips for cars, Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and other gadgets.</p>\n<p>These chips aren't as powerful as TSMC's top-tier chips, but they're arguably just as essential. UMC's plants are already operating at their maximum capacities, but the company faces less pressure to aggressively upgrade its plants than TSMC, Samsung, or Intel, which are all engaged in the costly \"process race\" to manufacture smaller and more advanced chips.</p>\n<p>UMC ranks a distant third in the foundry market behind TSMC and Samsung, but it still generates impressive growth: Its revenue rose 4% in 2019 and jumped 25% in 2020, and analysts expect 18% growth this year.</p>\n<p>UMC's stock has more than doubled over the past 12 months, but it still looks reasonably valued at 22 times forward earnings. Like ASML, UMC will continue to profit from the chip shortage. Moreover, the traffic jam at TSMC and other top foundries could eventually divert more lower-end orders to UMC.</p>\n<h2>3. Micron</h2>\n<p>Lastly, I believe <b>Micron Technology </b>(NASDAQ:MU) -- <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> of the world's leading producers of DRAM and NAND memory chips -- is currently undervalued at eight times forward earnings. Micron's stock has risen nearly 30% over the past 12 months, but it's stalled out in recent months amid fears of a cyclical slowdown.</p>\n<p>Micron's revenue fell 8% in fiscal 2020 (which ended last September) as a global glut of memory chips caused market prices to plunge. But in fiscal 2021, its revenue rose 29% as those supplies and prices stabilized.</p>\n<p>Micron wasn't directly affected by the chip shortage, since it manufactures its own chips instead of outsourcing them to third-party foundries. However, it expects shortages of other PC components -- including CPUs and GPUs -- to indirectly curb the market's near-term demand for its memory chips. That warning, along with a softer-than-expected forecast for the first quarter, spooked investors last month.</p>\n<p>Nonetheless, analysts still expect Micron's revenue and earnings to rise 15% and 44%, respectively, this year, as it benefits from the secular expansion of the gaming, data center, cloud, 5G, and automotive markets. Low-income nations account for less than 1% of the more than seven billion doses administered worldwide. Still, with the stock now changing hands at around $50, investors continue to undervalue the company. Investors are pricing Pfizer at 12 times next year’s expected earnings, cheaper than peers like&nbsp;Johnson &amp; Johnson&nbsp;(JNJ) and&nbsp;Eli Lilly&nbsp;(LLY).</p>\n<p>The Pfizer discount can be attributed to concerns over the patent cliff the drugmaker faces at the end of the decade. The company stands to lose exclusivity over a handful of drugs that bring in billions in annual revenue.</p>\n<p>The worries are legitimate, but Pfizer’s scientific coup should give investors confidence that the company’s science can carry it safely over that cliff. It may take time for the market to catch up, but for long-term investors, it’s a promising opportunity.</p>\n<p>The success of the antiviral is the best illustration yet of Pfizer’s scientific prowess.</p>\n<p>While Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine came out of the labs of the German biotech&nbsp;BioNTech&nbsp;(BNTX), the new Covid-19 antiviral was whipped up by what Dolsten called a “dream team” of scientists at Pfizer’s own labs across the Northeast U.S.</p>\n<p>In the earliest days of the pandemic, Pfizer split its efforts between its collaboration with BioNTech on the vaccine and its quest for a Covid-19 pill. The vaccine effort operated on a huge scale; Dolsten called it a “mega team” that spanned the Atlantic.</p>\n<p>The antiviral project was a much smaller operation—a group of Pfizer experts operating with resources left over from the vaccine push.</p>\n<p>“The small molecule was more like a nimble, laser-focused, high-end team, with rather moderate resources,” Dolsten said.</p>\n<p>Dolsten gathered some of Pfizer’s most experienced scientists to work on the antiviral project, including its head of medicine design, Charlotte Allerton. The scientists started with work Pfizer had done years ago on a type of antiviral called a protease inhibitor.</p>\n<p>“[Pfizer’s] pharmaceutical R&amp;D is better than people had thought.”</p>\n<p>The protease inhibitors in the Pfizer library, however, had been administered intravenously, and had not worked well when delivered orally. The team had to figure out how to adapt the drugs to oral administration, a substantial undertaking.</p>\n<p>“They had to really create a lot of new chemistry,” Dolsten said. The scientists created 600 compounds to nail down the right drug, a process that might normally take years, and which they accomplished in a matter of months. “Four years turned into four months here,” he said.</p>\n<p>Pfizer started testing the pill in humans in March. It is now running a number of Phase 2/3 trials of the drug, including one for patients who are high risk, one for patients not high risk, and one as a prophylaxis for patients who have been exposed to the virus but aren’t yet sick. In the first readout, the drug looked substantially more effective than the Covid treatment pill from&nbsp;Merck&nbsp;(MRK).</p>\n<p>“It definitely helps prove the point that [Pfizer’s] pharmaceutical R&amp;D is better than people had thought,” says Louise Chen, an analyst at Cantor Fitzgerald, who has an Overweight rating and a $61 price target on the stock.</p>\n<p>Chen says that she doesn’t expect investors to come around to her way of thinking until there is more clarity on the durability of Covid-19 vaccine and pill sales, and the rest of the pipeline gets proved out.</p>\n<p>“There is not one event that I think will trigger a re-rating of the stock at the next level,” she says. “Until those things play out, I don’t think that it necessarily will.”</p>\n<p>That makes a bet on Pfizer a long-term play. Earlier this month, Pfizer CEO Bourla blamed low-income countries for unfair vaccine distribution, telling <i>Barron’s</i> that it was their fault for not placing orders. Pfizer has sold a billion vaccine doses to the U.S. at a not-for-profit price to donate to poor countries, and says that a total of at least two billion doses will be delivered to low- and middle-income nations by the end of next year.</p>\n<p>When it comes to antivirals, Pfizer has said only that it will offer tiered pricing for poorer nations, the same approach it has taken with its vaccine.</p>\n<p>That contrasts sharply with Merck’s plan to make its own Covid-19 pill available to poor countries. tech stocks as investors expect a robust earnings season while interest rates remain low.</p>\n<p>Big tech companies including Facebook Inc, Netflix Inc, Twitter Inc and Nvidia Corp were among the biggest boosts to the S&amp;P 500 and the Nasdaq.</p>\n<p>The S&amp;P 500 continued its recent momentum after paring some earlier losses, recording its third record high in a row, after logging its best weekly performance in 20 weeks last Friday.</p>\n<p>In contrast, cyclical sectors dropped sharply amid fears over a spike in COVID-19 cases across Asia. Financials and energy posted the biggest sectoral loss on S&amp;P 500, down by 0.81% and 3.33%, respectively.</p>\n<p>“It’s end of the quarter and investors may want to take some profits and rotate out of energy and stick with tech,” said Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist at CFRA Research in New York.</p>\n<p>Stovall expects stocks should continue their near-term climb as investors await the new earnings season, in which year-over-year earnings growth of S&amp;P 500 companies is expected to top 60%.</p>\n<p>The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 150.57 points, or 0.44%, to close at 34,283.27. The S&amp;P 500 pared earlier losses and advanced from Friday’s record high by gaining 9.91 points, or 0.23%, to 4,290.61. The Nasdaq Composite added 140.12 points, or 0.98%, to 14,500.51.</p>\n<p>Both the S&amp;P 500 and the Nasdaq hit a series of record highs last week. the tech-heavy Nasdaq’s 5% gain in June is outpacing its peers as investors pile back in to tech-oriented growth stocks on diminishing worries about runaway inflation.</p>\n<p>“We believe with the Fed putting a realistic goal post, investors now have much more of a risk-on mentality going into the second half of the year. A lot of these tech names have underperformed, while fundamentals were very robust going into the June quarter,” said Wedbush Securities analyst Daniel Ives, who expects the Nasdaq to hit 16,000 by year-end.</p>\n<p>Facebook jumped over 4% as a U.S. judge granted the company’s motion to dismiss a Federal Trade Commission lawsuit. The social media giant finished Monday with over $1 trillion in market capitalization.</p>\n<p>On the Nasdaq 100, the largest gainer was Nvidia Corp, which rose 5.0% after major chip makers Broadcom Inc, Marvell and Taiwan-based MediaTek endorsed its $40 billion deal to buy UK chip designer Arm.</p>\n<p>With the S&amp;P 500 up almost 14% as the first half of 2021 draws to a close, activity in some areas of the market indicates concern over potential volatility, with some investors suggesting the market may be overdue for a significant pullback.</p>\n<p>On the economic front, investor attention will be focused on consumer confidence data, a private jobs report and a crucial monthly employment report due later this week. Investor Vance Howard thinks he’s found it.</p>\n<p>Howard and his small army of computer programmers atHoward Capital Managementin Roswell, Ga., have a quantitative system that posts great returns.</p>\n<p>His HCM Tactical Growth Fund&nbsp;HCMGX,+0.35%beats its Russell 1000&nbsp;benchmark index and large-blend fund category by 8.5-10.4 percentage points annualized over the past five years, according to Morningstar. That is no small feat, and not only because it has to overcome a 2.22% fee. Beating the market is simply not easy. His HCM Dividend Sector PlusHCMQX,-0.05%) and HCM Income PlusHCMLX,+0.30%funds post similar outperformance.</p>\n<p>There are drawbacks, which I detail below. (Among them: Potentially long stretches of underperformance and regular tax bills.) But first, what can we learn from this winner?</p>\n<p>So-called quants never share all the details of their proprietary systems, but Howard shares a lot, as you’ll see. And this Texas rancher has a lot of good advice based on “horse sense” — not surprising, given his infectious passion for the markets, and his three decades of experience as a pro.</p>\n<p>Here are five lessons, 12 exchange traded funds (ETFs) and four stocks to consider, from a recent interview with him.</p>\n<p><b>Lesson #1: Don’t be emotional</b></p>\n<p>It’s no surprise so many people do poorly in the market. Evolution has programmed us to fail. For survival, we’ve learned to run from things that frightens us. And crave more of things that are pleasurable — like sweets or fats to store calories ahead of what might be a long stretch without food. But in the market, acting on the emotions of fear and greed invariably make us do the wrong thing at the wrong time. Sell at the bottom, buy at the top.</p>\n<p>Likewise, we’re programmed to believe being with the crowd brings safety. If you’re a zebra on the Savanna, you are more likely to get picked off by a predator if you go it alone. The problem here is being part of a crowd — and crowd psychology — dumb us down to a purely emotional level. This is why people in crowds do terrible things they would never do on their own. It doesn’t matter how smart you are. When you join a crowd, you lose a lot of IQ points. Base emotions take over.</p>\n<p>To do well in the market, you have to counteract these tendencies. “One of the biggest mistakes individual investors and money managers make is getting emotional,” says Howard. “Let your emotions go.”</p>\n<p><b>Lesson #2: Have a system and stick to it</b></p>\n<p>To exorcise emotion, have a system. “And don’t second guess it,” says Howard. “This keeps you from letting the pandemic or Afghanistan scare you out of the market.” He calls his system the HCM-BuyLine. It is basically a momentum and trend-following system — which often works well in the markets.</p>\n<p>The HCM-BuyLine basically works like this. First, rather than use the S&amp;P 500SPX,-0.03%or the Dow Jones Industrial AverageDJIA,-0.21%,Howard blends several stock indices to create his own index. Then he uses a moving average that tells him whether the market is in an uptrend or downtrend.</p>\n<p>When the moving average drops 3.5%, he sells 35%. If it drops 6.5%, he sells another 35%. He rarely goes to 100% cash.</p>\n<p>“If the BuyLine is positive, we will stay long no matter what,” he says. “We take all the emotion out of the equation by letting the math decide.”</p>\n<p>Right now, it’s bullish. (More on this below.)</p>\n<p>Your system also has to tell you when to get back in.</p>\n<p>“That’s where most people screw up,” he says. “They get out of the market, and they don’t know when to get back in.” The HCM-BuyLine gives a buy signal when his custom index trades above its moving average for six consecutive sessions, and then goes on to trade above the high hit during those six days.</p>\n<p>You don’t need a system that calls exact market tops or bottoms. Instead, the BuyLine keeps Howard out of down markets 85% of the time, and in for 85% of the good times.</p>\n<p>“If we can do that consistently, we have superior returns and a less stressful life,” he says. “Being all in during a bad tape is no fun.”</p>\n<p>His system is slow to get him out of the market, but quick to get him back in. Not even a 10% correction will necessarily move him out. He’s often buying those pullbacks. Getting back in fast makes sense, because recoveries off bottoms tend to happen fast.</p>\n<p>“The HCM-BuyLine takes all the emotion out of the process,” says Howard.</p>\n<p><b>Lesson #3: Don’t fight the tape</b></p>\n<p>This concept is one of the core pieces of wisdom from Marty Zweig’s classic book, “Winning on Wall Street.”</p>\n<p>“You have to stay on the right side of market,” agrees Howard. “If you try to trade long in a bad market, it is painful.”</p>\n<p>In other words, don’t try to be a hero.</p>\n<p>“Sometimes, not losing money is where you want to be,” he says.</p>\n<p>Likewise, don’t turn cautious just because the market hits new highs — like now. You should love new highs, because it is a sign of market strength that may likely endure.</p>\n<p><b>Lesson #4: Keep it simple</b></p>\n<p>As you’ll see below, Howard doesn’t use esoteric instruments such as derivatives, swaps or index options. He doesn’t even trade foreign stocks or currencies. This is refreshing for individual investors, because we have a harder time accessing those tools.</p>\n<p>“You don’t have to trade crazy stuff,” he says. “You can trade plain-vanilla ETFs and beat everybody out there.”</p>\n<p><b>Lesson #5: How to trade the current market</b></p>\n<p>First, be long.</p>\n<p>“The HCM-BuyLine is very positive. We are 100% in,” says Howard. “The market is broadening out. It is getting pretty exciting. We do not see it turn around any time soon. We are buying pullbacks.”</p>\n<p>One bullish signal is all the cash on the sidelines. “If there is any relief in Covid, we may see a big rally. We may end up with a great fall [season].”</p>\n<p>Howard uses momentum indicators to select stocks and ETFs, too. For sectors he favors the following.</p>\n<p>He likes health care, tradable through the iShares US HealthcareIYH,-0.04%and ProShares Ultra Health CareRXL,+0.12%ETFs. Buy low</b></p>\n<p>Part of what upsets Orman so much about the furor over meme stocks like GameStop is it goes completely against the average investor’s interests.</p>\n<p>“All of you have your heads screwed on backwards,” she says. “All you want is for these markets to go up and up and up. What good is that going to do you?”</p>\n<p>She points out the only extra money most people have goes towardinvesting for retirementin their 401(k) or IRA plans.</p>\n<p>Because you probably don’t plan to touch that money for decades, the best long-term strategy is to buy low. That way, your dollar will go much further now, leaving plenty of room for growth over the next 20, 30 or 40 years.</p>\n<p><b>2. Invest on a schedule</b></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e4102f8a6d5002090743b1cbded32ef9\" tg-width=\"703\" tg-height=\"293\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">katjen / Shutterstock</p>\n<p>While she prefers to buy low, Orman doesn’t recommend you stop investing completely when the market goes up.</p>\n<p>She wants casual investors to not get caught up in the daily ups and downs of the market.</p>\n<p>In fact, cheering for downturns now may be your best bet at getting a larger piece of very profitable investments — like some lucky investors were able to do back in 2007 and 2008.</p>\n<p>“When the market went down, down, down you could buy things at nothing,” says Orman. “And now look at them 15 years later.”</p>\n<p>She suggests you set up a dollar-cost averaging strategy, which means you invest your money in equal portions at regular intervals, regardless of the market’s fluctuations.</p>\n<p>This kind of approach is easy to implement with any of the many investing apps currently available to DIY investors.</p>\n<p>There are even apps that willautomatically invest your spare changeby rounding up your debit and credit card purchases to the nearest dollar.</p>\n<p><b>3. Diversify with fractional shares</b></p>\n<p>To help weather dips in specific corners of the market, Orman suggests you diversify your investments — balance your portfolio with investments in many different types of assets and sectors of the economy.</p>\n<p>Orman particularly recommends fractional-share investing. This approach allows you to buy a slice of a share for a big-name company that you otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford.</p>\n<p>With the help of apopular stock-trading tool, anyone at any budget can afford the fractional share strategy.</p>\n<p>“The sooner you begin, the more money you will have,” says Orman. “Just don’t stop, and when these markets go down, you should be so happy because your dollars find more shares.”</p>\n<p>“And the more shares you have, the more money you’ll have 20, 40, 50 years from now.”</p>\n<p><b>What else you can do</b></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5e79c6fd1f8fa6e3a7c3a6c94f1e14b5\" tg-width=\"703\" tg-height=\"293\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">goodluz / Shutterstock</p>\n<p>Whether or not a big crash is around the corner, investors who are still decades out from retirement can make that work for them, Orman said in theCNBC video.</p>\n<p>First, prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Since the onset of the pandemic, Orman now recommends everyone have an emergency fund that can cover their expenses for a full year.</p>\n<p>Then, to set yourself up fora comfortable retirement, she suggests you opt for a Roth account, whether that’s a 401(k) or IRA.</p>\n<p>That will help you avoid paying tax when you take money out of your retirement account because your contributions to a Roth account are made after tax. The company has Services revenues up to $17.5 billion in quarterly sales accounting for some 21% of sales for the first 9 months of FY21.</p>\n<p>Apple is poised to roll these recurring revenues into more consistent growth, but the growth rates will be as annual revenues top $400 billion. Without the recency bias of the last year, investors would understand this concept and appropriately value the stock at a more normal valuation of ~15x future earnings.</p>\n<p>If the tech giant earns $5.92 in even FY23, the stock would only trade at $89 using a 15x multiple. Remember, one would normally question whether Apple even deserves a 15x forward multiple when earnings are only forecast to grow at a 5% clip in FY23.
