(NIO) is one of China's leading EV players, and has, through an attractive brand and its unique BaaS offering, attracted a lot of interest from consumers and investors. Today, however, the company is still way smaller than Tesla (TSLA), which is currently leading the global EV market. NIO is focused on its home market right now, which was true when Tesla was a smaller company as well, but NIO will try to grab market share in overseas markets as well. Shares are pricing in a lot of growth already, but if NIO can replicate Tesla's success, that could be more than justified.</p>\n<p><b>NIO And TSLA Stock Prices</b></p>\n<p>Both companies have benefitted from growing interest in EVs during 2020, a trend that saw share prices of most EV pureplays rise rapidly. The combination of growing market share for EVs, accommodating policies such as subsidies for EV purchases, and massive monetary stimulus let shares of NIO and TSLA rise rapidly. NIO is up 245% over the last year, while TSLA is up 101% over the same time. Both companies are currently trading below their all-time highs, however, which were hit in early 2021 before market sentiment for EV pureplays cooled to some degree.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5ff5ce865807df85283775d2293b41af\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"481\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Data by YCharts</span></p>\n<p>Taking a quick look at analyst price targets, we see that Tesla is trading almost perfectly in line with the consensus, whereas NIO trades about 30% below the analyst target. If the analyst community is right, then NIO is a substantially better investment right here, as Tesla is not expected to see its shares rise meaningfully over the next year, whereas NIO has significant upside to the analyst price target.</p>\n<p><b>Is NIO Similar To Tesla?</b></p>\n<p>The answer to that question depends on what you focus on. There are similarities between the two companies, but there are also differences. One could thus say that, in some ways, the two are similar, but in others, they are not. Let's look at a couple of things:</p>\n<p><b>Business Model</b></p>\n<p>Both companies are focused on the EV space, although Tesla has, over the years, been building out a couple of other businesses as well, such as energy storage. Most of Tesla's revenues are generated through selling electric vehicles, which is also how NIO operates. Both companies are focused on the premium segment of EVs, selling higher-priced vehicles that compete with brands such as BMW, Mercedes, and Lexus. Both companies offer a small range of different vehicles, in Tesla's case those are the well-known S, X, 3, and Y, whereas NIO offers a sedan (ET7), and three SUVs (EC6, ES6, ES8). Despite the fact that NIO is a way smaller company today, the model lineups of the two companies do thus not differ too much.</p>\n<p>Both companies offer some type of charging infrastructure to their customers, in Tesla's case, that's the Supercharger network, where Tesla owners can charge their cars with up to 250kW, depending on what version of Supercharger is installed. NIO is following a different approach, offering a battery-as-a-service solution to its customers. This shouldn't be a surprise, to be honest, as the law of large numbers dictates that maintaining massive growth rates becomes increasingly hard for a company the bigger it gets, and Tesla seems to have hit that point by now -- adding 50%+ a year to its top line will not be possible forever. This isn't even necessarily Tesla's fault, in fact, many high-quality growth companies have experienced the same. But investors should still consider this important fact -- Tesla's growth in coming years will be less exciting compared to what we have seen in the past, and peers, such as NIO, are growing faster.</p>\n<p>The same holds true when we take a longer-term view. Revenue estimates for 2025 rest at$22.6 billionfor NIO, up another 80% from the 2023 estimate, and up 320% from what analysts are forecasting for 2021. Tesla, meanwhile, is forecasted to generate revenues of $122.5 billion in 2025 -- a large number, but up by a comparatively weak 48% from 2023, and up by a total of 150% versus 2021. Between 2021 and 2025, NIO will thus 4x its revenue, while Tesla will 2.5x its revenue in the same time span -- a meaningful difference that should, all else equal, allow for a premium valuation for NIO, in the same way Tesla deserves a premium valuation versus legacy players such as Volkswagen (OTCPK:VWAGY).</p>\n<p>Looking at revenue estimates for 2025 relative to how the two companies are valued today, we see that NIO trades at 3.2x 2025 sales, while the 2025 sales multiple for Tesla is 5.2. For a long-term oriented investor, NIO thus seems like the better value today, thanks to the fact that it is trading at a significantly lower sales multiple when we take a look into the future. This does not necessarily mean that NIO is cheap, however, as even a 3.2x 2025 sales multiple is relatively high compared to how legacy auto companies are valued. NIO is looking less expensive than Tesla, however, even if its shares are not cheap on an absolute basis.</p>\n<p><b>Can NIO Be Worth As Much As Tesla?</b></p>\n<p>The answer to that depends on what time frame you are looking at. It should also be noted that there is no guarantee that Tesla's shares are a great example of how an EV company should be valued -- it is, at least, possible that its shares are significantly overpriced today, I personally believe that as well (Note that some will argue that shares are underpriced, which is also among the possibilities, although I do not hold that belief personally).</p>\n<p>When we do, for a moment, assume that Tesla is correctly valued today and that EV companies do deserve a market cap in the $600 billion range when they sell about 800,000 vehicles a year, then NIO could eventually hit that as well, although not in the near term. NIO will sell about 90,000 vehicles this year, and that amount should grow to about 400,000 in 2025. If NIO were to grow its sales by 15% a year beyond that point, it could sell around 800,000 cars in 2030, or 9 years from now. If one wants to assume faster growth, the 800,000 vehicles a year line could also be crossed before 2030, e.g. in 2028 or 2029. If we do go with 2030 for now, then NIO could, at a similar deliveries-to-market capitalization ratio to Tesla, be valued at $600+ billion in 2030. In other words, NIO could be worth as much as Tesla (today) in nine years, when we assume that current growth projections are realistic and that a Tesla-like valuation is appropriate. Those are two major ifs, of course, and especially the second point is far from certain, I believe. I personally would not be too surprised to see Tesla's valuation compress, and thus NIO could trade well below the $600 billion market cap level in 2030, even if it continues to grow meaningfully. It is also possible that NIO's growth disappoints and that current projections are too bullish, although I think that NIO is well-positioned for growth thanks to its unique BaaS model and its strong brand that is especially well-recognized in its home market.</p>\n<p>It should also be noted that Tesla's market cap in 2030 could be very different from $600 billion, thus even in case NIO hits that level, it is not at all guaranteed that the two companies will have a similar market cap. Tesla might be valued at a way higher valuation by then, e.g. if the ARK model is right (something I personally think is unlikely). To answer the above question, one could thus say that NIO might be worth hundreds of billions of dollars, like Tesla, in 8-10 years, but that is not at all guaranteed. And even if that were to happen, Tesla might be worth significantly more by then.</p>\n<p><b>Is NIO A Good Stock To Buy Or Sell Now?</b></p>\n<p>When considering NIO as an investment, it doesn't really matter all that much whether it will become as large or highly valued as Tesla eventually. Instead, investors should ask themselves what total returns they can expect over the next couple of years, and whether those expected returns are high enough relative to the risks in NIO's business model. Regarding those risks, one should mention the fact that the company isn't profitable yet, which means that NIO is dependent on cash on its balance sheet for growth investments. On top of that, competition in the EV space is growing, and market share battles could pressure margins in coming years, although NIO seems relatively well-positioned thanks to its battery-swapping, which is, I believe, a strong USP. Last but not least, the company's dependence on its home market China is a potential risk that should be kept in mind, although it should also be noted that, for now, it seems like the Chinese government is very accommodating to Chinese EV companies.</p>\n<p>One could argue that valuations across the whole EV industry are too high, relative to how legacy auto companies are valued. Market corrections are par for the course when investing in stocks, but that same history shows these downturns lay the foundation for great returns afterward.</p>\n<p>If you've been thinking about buying shares of a video game stock, the next market pullback would be a great buying opportunity. <b>Activision Blizzard</b> (NASDAQ:ATVI), <b>Electronic Arts</b> (NASDAQ:EA), and <b>Tencent</b> (OTC:TCEHY) are cash-rich leaders in the burgeoning video game industry that can deliver market-beating returns over the long term. A $1,000 investment in Activision stock in 2003, right after the first <i>Call of Duty</i> title was released, would be worth nearly $30,000 today.</p>\n<p>The <i>Call of Duty</i> franchise continues to grow. It's included in the company's Activision segment, which reached a record 150 million monthly active users (MAUs) in the first quarter. With seven other major franchises under its umbrella, Activision Blizzard sees an opportunity to improve those titles to more than double its MAUs to 1 billion.</p>\n<p>Making big-budget video game titles does require investing in thousands of employees and can involve significant marketing expenses, but many other aspects of production are not as capital intensive when compared to other industries. This allows top game companies that can sell millions of copies of new releases to produce robust amounts of free cash flow. Over the past four quarters, Activision Blizzard generated $2.8 billion in free cash flow on $8.5 billion in revenue.</p>\n<p>It pays out less than a fifth of that free cash flow in dividends, bringing the current dividend yield to 0.52%. There's clearly potential for Activision to safely double or triple that yield by increasing the payout ratio over time.</p>\n<p>Activision Blizzard owns several franchises that each have a built-in base of millions of fans, including <i>World of Warcraft</i>, <i>Diablo</i>, and <i>Overwatch</i>. The company is well stocked with cash, with $9.3 billion on the balance sheet, which should provide plenty of capital to continue reinvesting for growth.</p>\n<h2>2. Electronic Arts</h2>\n<p>Electronic Arts is known for its EA Sports titles, most notably <i>Madden</i> and <i>FIFA</i>. EA added 42 million new players to its network during the pandemic. It has a total of 230 million players and viewers, but management is targeting 500 million over the next five years.</p>\n<p>Most importantly, EA has demonstrated the ability to bring out new hits. The free-to-play shooter <i>Apex Legends</i> launched in 2019 and recently surpassed $1 billion in bookings. EA also revealed plans earlier this year to relaunch its previous <i>NCAA Football</i> franchise under the new title <i>EA Sports College Football</i>, which should be released within the next few years.</p>\n<p>EA's success in growing its sports business in recent years has left it with lots of cash to reinvest. It entered fiscal 2022 with $6.3 billion of cash and investments and has already put that to work. So far this year, EA has spent a combined $4.7 billion to buy Glu Mobile, Codemasters, and Playdemic. These studios bring their own game development prowess and popular titles to accelerate EA's expansion into mobile.</p>\n<p>In fiscal 2021, EA's free cash flow came to $1.8 billion on $5.6 billion of revenue. EA started paying a dividend within the last year, which signals management's confidence in its growth strategy. The quarterly dividend amounts to $0.17 per share, bringing the current dividend yield to 0.48%. The company's growing sports lineup and willingness to return capital to shareholders makes it a top video game stock to consider buying.</p>\n<h2>3. Tencent</h2>\n<p>Tencent is the largest video game company in the world by revenue and also operates the popular WeChat social media platform in China. It owns Riot Games, the operator of one of the top esports titles in the world in <i>League of Legends</i>. It also has ownership stakes in several other companies, including Epic Games and Activision Blizzard.</p>\n<p>Gaming makes up 29% of its annual revenue, with online advertising, fintech, and business services composing most of the balance. But gaming is Tencent's largest business segment. It's the diversity of revenue streams across fast-growing markets, including gaming and cloud services, that make it a stock worth keeping on your radar.</p>\n<p>Over the last four quarters, Tencent generated $18.5 billion in free cash flow. It has $39 billion of dry powder on the balance sheet, in addition to a portfolio of investees that was worth over $200 billion in the first quarter. That's a lot of firepower.</p>\n<p>Tencent compares the current state of the video game industry to the movie business in the 1930s, and it's investing to maintain its leadership status. Last year, management announced a deep pipeline of 40 new titles, including internally developed and licensed games in development. It's particularly focusing on where gamers are spending more time, which is with big-budget, immersive gaming experiences.</p>\n<p>\"The development speed, scale, range, and depth of information technology is much greater than the last Industrial Revolution,\" said Senior Vice President Steven Ma. \"This brings unimaginable opportunities for games and the space is almost limitless.\"</p>\n<p>However, investors should note the risks of investing in Chinese companies. Apple will give its employees at least a month's warning before mandating a return to offices, the people said, asking not to be identified discussing internal policy.\nChief executive officer Tim Cook said in June that employees should begin returning to offices in early September for at least three days a week. In an internal memo, Cook cited the availability of vaccinations and declining infection rates. The S&P 500,for comparison, rose 0.2% Monday and is up 2% over the past month. Call options volume, which rose almost 200% on Monday compared to Friday, is perhaps the biggest reason NIO shares might be more volatile.</p>\n<p>Call options give the holder the right to buy a stock at a fixed price. (Buying a call is a bullish take on the underlying stock.) Brokers will sell and trade options contracts because they want to earn a commission on a trade. But brokers don’t want to be short a call option, which means they’ll have to take a loss if the stock rises.</p>\n<p>One way brokers can hedge options positions is to buy the underlying stock. If a broker sells a call and buys the stock, they can earn the options commission and, if the stock rises, they can deliver the stock purchased to the call holder. In that scenario, the broker doesn’t have to buy shares at a higher price. That process is one way higher-than-average call buying can drive buying in the underlying stock.</p>\n<p>Other factors don’t seem to be at play. Wall Street, for example, can’t be credited with the rally. The average analystprice targetfor NIO stock is up about 1% over the past month and not much has happened to those targets since the companyreported earningsat the end of April. Looking back to that point, the average analyst price target has gone up about $1 to a little more than $59 a share.</p>\n<p>News doesn’t seem to be a credible reason for NIO’s rally, either. The last release on NIO’s website is fromJune 1when the company reported May deliveries. Those numbers relieved investors because the electric vehicle company maintained second-quarter delivery guidance despite a global automotive semiconductor shortage that has roiled the entire industry.</p>\n<p>NIO shares are now up 1% year to date. It’s been a wild ride so far in 2021. The S&P 500,for comparison, rose 0.2% Monday and is up 2% over the past month. Call options volume, which rose almost 200% on Monday compared to Friday, is perhaps the biggest reason NIO shares might be more volatile.\nCall options give the holder the right to buy a stock at a fixed price. (Buying a call is a bullish take on the underlying stock.) Brokers will sell and trade options contracts because they want to earn a commission on a trade. But brokers don’t want to be short a call option, which means they’ll have to take a loss if the stock rises.\nOne way brokers can hedge options positions is to buy the underlying stock. If a broker sells a call and buys the stock, they can earn the options commission and, if the stock rises, they can deliver the stock purchased to the call holder. In that scenario, the broker doesn’t have to buy shares at a higher price. (NIO) is one of China's leading EV players, and has, through an attractive brand and its unique BaaS offering, attracted a lot of interest from consumers and investors. Today, however, the company is still way smaller than Tesla (TSLA), which is currently leading the global EV market. NIO is focused on its home market right now, which was true when Tesla was a smaller company as well, but NIO will try to grab market share in overseas markets as well. Shares are pricing in a lot of growth already, but if NIO can replicate Tesla's success, that could be more than justified.</p>\n<p><b>NIO And TSLA Stock Prices</b></p>\n<p>Both companies have benefitted from growing interest in EVs during 2020, a trend that saw share prices of most EV pureplays rise rapidly. The combination of growing market share for EVs, accommodating policies such as subsidies for EV purchases, and massive monetary stimulus let shares of NIO and TSLA rise rapidly. NIO is up 245% over the last year, while TSLA is up 101% over the same time. Both companies are currently trading below their all-time highs, however, which were hit in early 2021 before market sentiment for EV pureplays cooled to some degree.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5ff5ce865807df85283775d2293b41af\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"481\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Data by YCharts</span></p>\n<p>Taking a quick look at analyst price targets, we see that Tesla is trading almost perfectly in line with the consensus, whereas NIO trades about 30% below the analyst target. If the analyst community is right, then NIO is a substantially better investment right here, as Tesla is not expected to see its shares rise meaningfully over the next year, whereas NIO has significant upside to the analyst price target.</p>\n<p><b>Is NIO Similar To Tesla?</b></p>\n<p>The answer to that question depends on what you focus on. There are similarities between the two companies, but there are also differences. One could thus say that, in some ways, the two are similar, but in others, they are not. Let's look at a couple of things:</p>\n<p><b>Business Model</b></p>\n<p>Both companies are focused on the EV space, although Tesla has, over the years, been building out a couple of other businesses as well, such as energy storage. Most of Tesla's revenues are generated through selling electric vehicles, which is also how NIO operates. Both companies are focused on the premium segment of EVs, selling higher-priced vehicles that compete with brands such as BMW, Mercedes, and Lexus. Both companies offer a small range of different vehicles, in Tesla's case those are the well-known S, X, 3, and Y, whereas NIO offers a sedan (ET7), and three SUVs (EC6, ES6, ES8). Despite the fact that NIO is a way smaller company today, the model lineups of the two companies do thus not differ too much.</p>\n<p>Both companies offer some type of charging infrastructure to their customers, in Tesla's case, that's the Supercharger network, where Tesla owners can charge their cars with up to 250kW, depending on what version of Supercharger is installed. NIO is following a different approach, offering a battery-as-a-service solution to its customers. NIO owners can get their battery switched out to a fully-charged battery at NIO's stations, a process that takes a couple of minutes and is thus significantly quicker compared to the regular EV charging offered by Tesla and other EV players. BaaS thus has advantages when it comes to the time it takes for a charge/swap, but it should be noted that Tesla's Superchargers are way more common around the world compared to NIO's battery-swapping stations. Rolling out that feature in additional markets will require large capital expenditures, but NIO's offering is a unique selling point compared to what all other EV players, including Tesla, are offering. It remains to be seen whether that will ultimately pay off, but this could become a major advantage for NIO as competition in the EV space is heating up.</p>\n<p><b>Size, growth, and valuation</b></p>\n<p>The two companies differ significantly in size, both when it comes to revenues and vehicle sales, as well as when it comes to the market value of the two companies. NIO has delivered22,000 vehicles in Q2, up 112% year over year, for an annual pace of around 90,000 vehicles. Tesla, meanwhile, has delivered 201,000 vehicles during Q2, up from 103,000 vehicles delivered during Q2 2020. This is strong growth on a year-over-year basis, although slightly below 100%, and thus below the growth rate that NIO is generating for now.</p>\n<p>Tesla delivers around 9x as many vehicles compared to NIO per quarter, when we look at the market capitalizations of the two companies, we see that the ratio is almost exactly the same, as Tesla's market cap of $640 billion is ~9x as high as that of NIO, at $72 billion. At similar growth rates, that would make perfect sense, but it looks like NIO might be the better deal for now, as it trades at a comparable valuation while generating better growth. This will be especially true in the coming quarters, where Tesla's growth is expected to slow down:</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a986ea65130206f99961a46ce6cfed55\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"515\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Data by YCharts</span></p>\n<p>Tesla is forecasted to grow its revenue from $49 billion in 2021 to $83 billion in 2023, for an annual growth rate of 30%. NIO, meanwhile, is expected to see its revenue explode upwards from $5.4 billion to $12.8 billion between 2021 and 2023, for an annual growth rate of 54%. NIO is thus expected to grow way faster than Tesla over the next two years, on a relative basis. This shouldn't be a surprise, to be honest, as the law of large numbers dictates that maintaining massive growth rates becomes increasingly hard for a company the bigger it gets, and Tesla seems to have hit that point by now -- adding 50%+ a year to its top line will not be possible forever. This isn't even necessarily Tesla's fault, in fact, many high-quality growth companies have experienced the same. But investors should still consider this important fact -- Tesla's growth in coming years will be less exciting compared to what we have seen in the past, and peers, such as NIO, are growing faster.</p>\n<p>The same holds true when we take a longer-term view. Revenue estimates for 2025 rest at$22.6 billionfor NIO, up another 80% from the 2023 estimate, and up 320% from what analysts are forecasting for 2021. Tesla, meanwhile, is forecasted to generate revenues of $122.5 billion in 2025 -- a large number, but up by a comparatively weak 48% from 2023, and up by a total of 150% versus 2021. Between 2021 and 2025, NIO will thus 4x its revenue, while Tesla will 2.5x its revenue in the same time span -- a meaningful difference that should, all else equal, allow for a premium valuation for NIO, in the same way Tesla deserves a premium valuation versus legacy players such as Volkswagen (OTCPK:VWAGY).</p>\n<p>Looking at revenue estimates for 2025 relative to how the two companies are valued today, we see that NIO trades at 3.2x 2025 sales, while the 2025 sales multiple for Tesla is 5.2. For a long-term oriented investor, NIO thus seems like the better value today, thanks to the fact that it is trading at a significantly lower sales multiple when we take a look into the future. This does not necessarily mean that NIO is cheap, however, as even a 3.2x 2025 sales multiple is relatively high compared to how legacy auto companies are valued. NIO is looking less expensive than Tesla, however, even if its shares are not cheap on an absolute basis.</p>\n<p><b>Can NIO Be Worth As Much As Tesla?</b></p>\n<p>The answer to that depends on what time frame you are looking at. Today, NIO is significantly smaller than Tesla and thus rightfully trades at a way smaller market cap. It should also be noted that there is no guarantee that Tesla's shares are a great example of how an EV company should be valued -- it is, at least, possible that its shares are significantly overpriced today, I personally believe that as well (Note that some will argue that shares are underpriced, which is also among the possibilities, although I do not hold that belief personally).</p>\n<p>When we do, for a moment, assume that Tesla is correctly valued today and that EV companies do deserve a market cap in the $600 billion range when they sell about 800,000 vehicles a year, then NIO could eventually hit that as well, although not in the near term. NIO will sell about 90,000 vehicles this year, and that amount should grow to about 400,000 in 2025. If NIO were to grow its sales by 15% a year beyond that point, it could sell around 800,000 cars in 2030, or 9 years from now. If one wants to assume faster growth, the 800,000 vehicles a year line could also be crossed before 2030, e.g. in 2028 or 2029. If we do go with 2030 for now, then NIO could, at a similar deliveries-to-market capitalization ratio to Tesla, be valued at $600+ billion in 2030. In other words, NIO could be worth as much as Tesla (today) in nine years, when we assume that current growth projections are realistic and that a Tesla-like valuation is appropriate. Those are two major ifs, of course, and especially the second point is far from certain, I believe. I personally would not be too surprised to see Tesla's valuation compress, and thus NIO could trade well below the $600 billion market cap level in 2030, even if it continues to grow meaningfully. It is also possible that NIO's growth disappoints and that current projections are too bullish, although I think that NIO is well-positioned for growth thanks to its unique BaaS model and its strong brand that is especially well-recognized in its home market.</p>\n<p>It should also be noted that Tesla's market cap in 2030 could be very different from $600 billion, thus even in case NIO hits that level, it is not at all guaranteed that the two companies will have a similar market cap. Tesla might be valued at a way higher valuation by then, e.g. if the ARK model is right (something I personally think is unlikely). To answer the above question, one could thus say that NIO might be worth hundreds of billions of dollars, like Tesla, in 8-10 years, but that is not at all guaranteed. And even if that were to happen, Tesla might be worth significantly more by then.</p>\n<p><b>Is NIO A Good Stock To Buy Or Sell Now?</b></p>\n<p>When considering NIO as an investment, it doesn't really matter all that much whether it will become as large or highly valued as Tesla eventually. Instead, investors should ask themselves what total returns they can expect over the next couple of years, and whether those expected returns are high enough relative to the risks in NIO's business model. Regarding those risks, one should mention the fact that the company isn't profitable yet, which means that NIO is dependent on cash on its balance sheet for growth investments. On top of that, competition in the EV space is growing, and market share battles could pressure margins in coming years, although NIO seems relatively well-positioned thanks to its battery-swapping, which is, I believe, a strong USP. Last but not least, the company's dependence on its home market China is a potential risk that should be kept in mind, although it should also be noted that, for now, it seems like the Chinese government is very accommodating to Chinese EV companies.</p>\n<p>One could argue that valuations across the whole EV industry are too high, relative to how legacy auto companies are valued. Even those legacy players with attractive EV offerings such as Volkswagen or Ford trade at huge discounts compared to EV pureplays. But if one wants to invest in an EV pureplay, NIO doesn't seem like a bad choice. The company combines a strong brand, a unique BaaS offering, high growth rates, and shares trade at a discount compared to how the EV king Tesla is valued. At a little above 3x 2025 revenue, NIO does not seem overly expensive relative to other EV pureplays, although this still represents a premium versus legacy players, of course. If NIO manages to execute well and continues to roll out new models that are well-received by consumers, its shares could have significant upside potential in the long run. If EV stocks ever become an out-of-favor investment, NIO stock also could have considerable downside, however, this thus is not a low-risk pick. (NIO) is one of China's leading EV players, and has, through an attractive brand and its unique BaaS offering, attracted a lot of interest from consumers and investors. Today, however, the company is still way smaller than Tesla (TSLA), which is currently leading the global EV market. NIO is focused on its home market right now, which was true when Tesla was a smaller company as well, but NIO will try to grab market share in overseas markets as well. Shares are pricing in a lot of growth already, but if NIO can replicate Tesla's success, that could be more than justified.\nNIO And TSLA Stock Prices\nBoth companies have benefitted from growing interest in EVs during 2020, a trend that saw share prices of most EV pureplays rise rapidly. The combination of growing market share for EVs, accommodating policies such as subsidies for EV purchases, and massive monetary stimulus let shares of NIO and TSLA rise rapidly. NIO is up 245% over the last year, while TSLA is up 101% over the same time. Both companies are currently trading below their all-time highs, however, which were hit in early 2021 before market sentiment for EV pureplays cooled to some degree.\nData by YCharts\nTaking a quick look at analyst price targets, we see that Tesla is trading almost perfectly in line with the consensus, whereas NIO trades about 30% below the analyst target. If the analyst community is right, then NIO is a substantially better investment right here, as Tesla is not expected to see its shares rise meaningfully over the next year, whereas NIO has significant upside to the analyst price target.\nIs NIO Similar To Tesla?\nThe answer to that question depends on what you focus on. There are similarities between the two companies, but there are also differences. One could thus say that, in some ways, the two are similar, but in others, they are not. Let's look at a couple of things:\nBusiness Model\nBoth companies are focused on the EV space, although Tesla has, over the years, been building out a couple of other businesses as well, such as energy storage. Most of Tesla's revenues are generated through selling electric vehicles, which is also how NIO operates. Both companies are focused on the premium segment of EVs, selling higher-priced vehicles that compete with brands such as BMW, Mercedes, and Lexus. Both companies offer a small range of different vehicles, in Tesla's case those are the well-known S, X, 3, and Y, whereas NIO offers a sedan (ET7), and three SUVs (EC6, ES6, ES8). Despite the fact that NIO is a way smaller company today, the model lineups of the two companies do thus not differ too much.\nBoth companies offer some type of charging infrastructure to their customers, in Tesla's case, that's the Supercharger network, where Tesla owners can charge their cars with up to 250kW, depending on what version of Supercharger is installed. NIO is following a different approach, offering a battery-as-a-service solution to its customers. NIO owners can get their battery switched out to a fully-charged battery at NIO's stations, a process that takes a couple of minutes and is thus significantly quicker compared to the regular EV charging offered by Tesla and other EV players. BaaS thus has advantages when it comes to the time it takes for a charge/swap, but it should be noted that Tesla's Superchargers are way more common around the world compared to NIO's battery-swapping stations. Rolling out that feature in additional markets will require large capital expenditures, but NIO's offering is a unique selling point compared to what all other EV players, including Tesla, are offering. It remains to be seen whether that will ultimately pay off, but this could become a major advantage for NIO as competition in the EV space is heating up.\nSize, growth, and valuation\nThe two companies differ significantly in size, both when it comes to revenues and vehicle sales, as well as when it comes to the market value of the two companies. NIO has delivered22,000 vehicles in Q2, up 112% year over year, for an annual pace of around 90,000 vehicles. Tesla, meanwhile, has delivered 201,000 vehicles during Q2, up from 103,000 vehicles delivered during Q2 2020. This is strong growth on a year-over-year basis, although slightly below 100%, and thus below the growth rate that NIO is generating for now.\nTesla delivers around 9x as many vehicles compared to NIO per quarter, when we look at the market capitalizations of the two companies, we see that the ratio is almost exactly the same, as Tesla's market cap of $640 billion is ~9x as high as that of NIO, at $72 billion. At similar growth rates, that would make perfect sense, but it looks like NIO might be the better deal for now, as it trades at a comparable valuation while generating better growth. This will be especially true in the coming quarters, where Tesla's growth is expected to slow down:\nData by YCharts\nTesla is forecasted to grow its revenue from $49 billion in 2021 to $83 billion in 2023, for an annual growth rate of 30%. NIO, meanwhile, is expected to see its revenue explode upwards from $5.4 billion to $12.8 billion between 2021 and 2023, for an annual growth rate of 54%. NIO is thus expected to grow way faster than Tesla over the next two years, on a relative basis. This shouldn't be a surprise, to be honest, as the law of large numbers dictates that maintaining massive growth rates becomes increasingly hard for a company the bigger it gets, and Tesla seems to have hit that point by now -- adding 50%+ a year to its top line will not be possible forever. This isn't even necessarily Tesla's fault, in fact, many high-quality growth companies have experienced the same. But investors should still consider this important fact -- Tesla's growth in coming years will be less exciting compared to what we have seen in the past, and peers, such as NIO, are growing faster.\nThe same holds true when we take a longer-term view. Revenue estimates for 2025 rest at$22.6 billionfor NIO, up another 80% from the 2023 estimate, and up 320% from what analysts are forecasting for 2021. Tesla, meanwhile, is forecasted to generate revenues of $122.5 billion in 2025 -- a large number, but up by a comparatively weak 48% from 2023, and up by a total of 150% versus 2021. Between 2021 and 2025, NIO will thus 4x its revenue, while Tesla will 2.5x its revenue in the same time span -- a meaningful difference that should, all else equal, allow for a premium valuation for NIO, in the same way Tesla deserves a premium valuation versus legacy players such as Volkswagen (OTCPK:VWAGY).\nLooking at revenue estimates for 2025 relative to how the two companies are valued today, we see that NIO trades at 3.2x 2025 sales, while the 2025 sales multiple for Tesla is 5.2. For a long-term oriented investor, NIO thus seems like the better value today, thanks to the fact that it is trading at a significantly lower sales multiple when we take a look into the future. This does not necessarily mean that NIO is cheap, however, as even a 3.2x 2025 sales multiple is relatively high compared to how legacy auto companies are valued. NIO is looking less expensive than Tesla, however, even if its shares are not cheap on an absolute basis.\nCan NIO Be Worth As Much As Tesla?\nThe answer to that depends on what time frame you are looking at. Today, NIO is significantly smaller than Tesla and thus rightfully trades at a way smaller market cap. It should also be noted that there is no guarantee that Tesla's shares are a great example of how an EV company should be valued -- it is, at least, possible that its shares are significantly overpriced today, I personally believe that as well (Note that some will argue that shares are underpriced, which is also among the possibilities, although I do not hold that belief personally).\nWhen we do, for a moment, assume that Tesla is correctly valued today and that EV companies do deserve a market cap in the $600 billion range when they sell about 800,000 vehicles a year, then NIO could eventually hit that as well, although not in the near term. NIO will sell about 90,000 vehicles this year, and that amount should grow to about 400,000 in 2025. If NIO were to grow its sales by 15% a year beyond that point, it could sell around 800,000 cars in 2030, or 9 years from now. If one wants to assume faster growth, the 800,000 vehicles a year line could also be crossed before 2030, e.g. in 2028 or 2029. If we do go with 2030 for now, then NIO could, at a similar deliveries-to-market capitalization ratio to Tesla, be valued at $600+ billion in 2030. In other words, NIO could be worth as much as Tesla (today) in nine years, when we assume that current growth projections are realistic and that a Tesla-like valuation is appropriate. Those are two major ifs, of course, and especially the second point is far from certain, I believe. I personally would not be too surprised to see Tesla's valuation compress, and thus NIO could trade well below the $600 billion market cap level in 2030, even if it continues to grow meaningfully. It is also possible that NIO's growth disappoints and that current projections are too bullish, although I think that NIO is well-positioned for growth thanks to its unique BaaS model and its strong brand that is especially well-recognized in its home market.\nIt should also be noted that Tesla's market cap in 2030 could be very different from $600 billion, thus even in case NIO hits that level, it is not at all guaranteed that the two companies will have a similar market cap. Tesla might be valued at a way higher valuation by then, e.g. if the ARK model is right (something I personally think is unlikely). To answer the above question, one could thus say that NIO might be worth hundreds of billions of dollars, like Tesla, in 8-10 years, but that is not at all guaranteed. And even if that were to happen, Tesla might be worth significantly more by then.\nIs NIO A Good Stock To Buy Or Sell Now?\nWhen considering NIO as an investment, it doesn't really matter all that much whether it will become as large or highly valued as Tesla eventually. Instead, investors should ask themselves what total returns they can expect over the next couple of years, and whether those expected returns are high enough relative to the risks in NIO's business model. Regarding those risks, one should mention the fact that the company isn't profitable yet, which means that NIO is dependent on cash on its balance sheet for growth investments. On top of that, competition in the EV space is growing, and market share battles could pressure margins in coming years, although NIO seems relatively well-positioned thanks to its battery-swapping, which is, I believe, a strong USP. Last but not least, the company's dependence on its home market China is a potential risk that should be kept in mind, although it should also be noted that, for now, it seems like the Chinese government is very accommodating to Chinese EV companies.\nOne could argue that valuations across the whole EV industry are too high, relative to how legacy auto companies are valued. Even those legacy players with attractive EV offerings such as Volkswagen or Ford trade at huge discounts compared to EV pureplays. But if one wants to invest in an EV pureplay, NIO doesn't seem like a bad choice. The company combines a strong brand, a unique BaaS offering, high growth rates, and shares trade at a discount compared to how the EV king Tesla is valued. At a little above 3x 2025 revenue, NIO does not seem overly expensive relative to other EV pureplays, although this still represents a premium versus legacy players, of course. If NIO manages to execute well and continues to roll out new models that are well-received by consumers, its shares could have significant upside potential in the long run. If EV stocks ever become an out-of-favor investment, NIO stock also could have considerable downside, however, this thus is not a low-risk pick. Depending on your risk tolerance, NIO could still be of value if you want a high-growth EV Call me old-school, but I've always considered a market cap in excess of $100 billion to be a megacap stock (today, some folks believe in a megacap cutoff of $200 billion).</p>\n<p>Historically, companies that surpass a $100 billion market cap are slow-growing, but they're often profitable, time-tested, and offer modest long-term appreciation. However, the latter may not be the case for a trio of megacap stocks.</p>\n<p>Of the nearly 120 companies with at least a $100 billion market cap, only three have a high-water Wall Street price target that implies a doubling in their respective share prices. Can these megacap stocks actually double? Let's take a closer look.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://g.foolcdn.com/image/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fg.foolcdn.com%2Feditorial%2Fimages%2F635058%2Fdividend-cash-on-financial-newspaper-getty.jpg&w=700&op=resize\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>Tesla Motors: Implied upside of 129%</h2>\n<p>Perhaps unsurprisingly, auto stock <b>Tesla Motors</b> (NASDAQ:TSLA) offers the highest implied upside, based on the beefiest Wall Street price target -- $1,471 a share -- as of this past weekend. If this price target came to fruition, we'd be talking about a 129% increase in Tesla's stock. It's also worth mentioning that ARK invest CEO and Chief Investment Officer Cathie Wood believes Tesla can hit $3,000 a share by mid-decade.</p>\n<p>The obvious reason for bullishness has to do with the epic multi-decade vehicle replacement cycle that'll see people and businesses switching to electric vehicles (EV) and other forms of alternative energy-powered transportation. Tesla had a first-mover advantage in the U.S., and it's building a name for itself in China, which is the largest auto market in the world. By 2035, the Society of Automotive Engineers of China estimates that half of all new vehicles sold in China will be powered by alternative energy.</p>\n<p>Another reason some Wall Street analysts have rallied around Tesla is the company's clear-cut competitive advantages. For example, Tesla's batteries have higher capacity, more power, and better range than the batteries being developed by its peers. The introduction of the Model 3 also brought the price of entry-level EV ownership down considerably.</p>\n<p>But Tesla is also a highly polarizing stock, with a low price target from Wall Street of just $67. That's because there's a mountain of competition brewing in the EV space domestically and abroad. <b>General Motors</b> (NYSE:GM) plans to spend $35 billion on EVs and autonomous innovation through mid-decade. Meanwhile, <b>Ford Motor Company</b> (NYSE:F) is planning to spend $30 billion through 2025 on EVs. GM and Ford will each be launching 30 new electric vehicles globally within five years.</p>\n<p>An even bigger concern might just be Tesla's inability to generate a profit from selling EVs. Although it's been reporting adjusted quarterly profits for more than a year, Tesla's \"profitability\" has hinged on it selling renewable energy credits to other automakers or selling its digital assets (<b>Bitcoin</b>) for a profit. It's hard to envision Tesla being worth $1.4 trillion without even demonstrating to Wall Street that it can generate a recurring profit from selling EVs.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/16ca48e46c5ed915bdfaeb115d44e553\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"467\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>JD.com: Implied upside of 101%</h2>\n<p>Wall Street is also expecting big things from China's second-largest online retailer, <b>JD.com</b> (NASDAQ:JD). Though the consensus of all analysts is that JD offers a hearty 43% upside, <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> analyst foresees the company making a currency-converted run at close to $105 a share. This implies potential gains of 101% for the e-commerce giant.</p>\n<p>Wall Street's fascination with JD has to do with its similarities to <b>Amazon.com</b> and its (pardon the pun) prime location (i.e., at the heart of China's rapidly growing economy). Though the company does, in certain instances, act as a third-party marketplace, it's primarily a direct retailer of goods to online shoppers and maintains its own inventory. Having greater control over product quality and logistics is what's helped Amazon to generate insane amounts of cash flow, and it should do the same for JD. As of the end of March, JD's annual active customer count was a stone's throw from 500 million, up 29% from the prior-year period.</p>\n<p>Equally exciting is the rapid growth JD is experiencing from its service operations, which encompasses things like healthcare services, cloud services, and advertising. In late April, <b>Cloudflare</b> announced that it would partner with JD to expand its network in China. For JD, Cloudflare's use of its cloud infrastructure will create another channel of fast-growing sales. In Q1, this service segment grew sales by a blistering 73% from the prior-year quarter.</p>\n<p>However, JD is far from being the only fish in the pond in the world's second-largest economy. Though being a direct retailer comes with its advantages, it's nevertheless under constant pressure from the likes of <b>Alibaba</b> and <b>Pinduoduo</b>. Even <b>Tencent Holdings</b>, which has been a longtime shareholder of JD, is a potential threat with its slow but steady push into mobile e-commerce.</p>\n<p>Yet, even with increasing competition and regulatory uncertainty in China, JD offers a very realistic shot at eventually hitting Wall Street's upper echelon price target. Take note, I'm not saying JD gets there within 12 months, as is the common timeframe for Wall Street price targets. But within the next few years, $105 is a very realistic target given its 20%-plus sustainable growth rate and cloud services push.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://g.foolcdn.com/image/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fg.foolcdn.com%2Feditorial%2Fimages%2F635058%2Fsiblings-watch-tv-family-entertainment-show-network-getty.jpg&w=700&op=resize\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>Netflix: Implied upside of 124%</h2>\n<p>The last megacap stock that Wall Street believes has the potential to double is streaming content provider <b>Netflix</b> (NASDAQ:NFLX). The most aggressive price target on Wall Street foresees Netflix galloping to $1,154 a share, or 124% higher than where the company settled this past week.</p>\n<p>Similar to Tesla, Wall Street's fascination with Netflix has a lot to do with the company's first-mover advantage. Folks were scratching their heads when CEO Reed Hastings decided to shift away from a highly profitable DVD-delivery business and focus his company's attention on streaming. With hindsight being 20/20, we know this was a genius move. Netflix ended June with almost 209.2 million global streaming subscribers.</p>\n<p>Netflix also has a long history of turning heads thanks to its original programming. It's released dozens of original shows and movies, many of which have turned casual subscribers into users who become hooked on the service.</p>\n<p>But there are also a number of good reasons to believe that $1,154 isn't achievable. For instance, competition in the streaming space has been steadily picking up, with Netflix losing some of its share in the United States. In particular, <b>Walt Disney</b>'s streaming service Disney+ took just 16 months to go from launch to more than 100 million subscribers. The timing of the pandemic certainly helped Disney+, however its ascension can't be ignored.</p>\n<p>Furthermore, there's uncertainty about subscriber growth in a post-pandemic world. Make no mistake about it, we're still in a global pandemic. But with vaccination rates climbing, it's a fair assumption that people are going to be spending more time outside their homes rather than in front of their televisions or laptops. This could certainly slow Netflix's subscriber growth.</p>\n<p>A final reason for skepticism in this high-water price target is Netflix's long history of net cash outflows. It's no secret that Netflix wants to expand internationally, and it's willing to spend big to gobble up international streaming share. Call me old-school, but I've always considered a market cap in excess of $100 billion to be a megacap stock (today, some folks believe in a megacap cutoff of $200 billion).\nHistorically, companies that surpass a $100 billion market cap are slow-growing, but they're often profitable, time-tested, and offer modest long-term appreciation. However, the latter may not be the case for a trio of megacap stocks.\nOf the nearly 120 companies with at least a $100 billion market cap, only three have a high-water Wall Street price target that implies a doubling in their respective share prices. Can these megacap stocks actually double? Let's take a closer look.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nTesla Motors: Implied upside of 129%\nPerhaps unsurprisingly, auto stock Tesla Motors (NASDAQ:TSLA) offers the highest implied upside, based on the beefiest Wall Street price target -- $1,471 a share -- as of this past weekend. If this price target came to fruition, we'd be talking about a 129% increase in Tesla's stock. It's also worth mentioning that ARK invest CEO and Chief Investment Officer Cathie Wood believes Tesla can hit $3,000 a share by mid-decade.\nThe obvious reason for bullishness has to do with the epic multi-decade vehicle replacement cycle that'll see people and businesses switching to electric vehicles (EV) and other forms of alternative energy-powered transportation. Tesla had a first-mover advantage in the U.S., and it's building a name for itself in China, which is the largest auto market in the world. By 2035, the Society of Automotive Engineers of China estimates that half of all new vehicles sold in China will be powered by alternative energy.\nAnother reason some Wall Street analysts have rallied around Tesla is the company's clear-cut competitive advantages. For example, Tesla's batteries have higher capacity, more power, and better range than the batteries being developed by its peers. The introduction of the Model 3 also brought the price of entry-level EV ownership down considerably.\nBut Tesla is also a highly polarizing stock, with a low price target from Wall Street of just $67. That's because there's a mountain of competition brewing in the EV space domestically and abroad. General Motors (NYSE:GM) plans to spend $35 billion on EVs and autonomous innovation through mid-decade. Meanwhile, Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) is planning to spend $30 billion through 2025 on EVs. GM and Ford will each be launching 30 new electric vehicles globally within five years.\nAn even bigger concern might just be Tesla's inability to generate a profit from selling EVs. Although it's been reporting adjusted quarterly profits for more than a year, Tesla's \"profitability\" has hinged on it selling renewable energy credits to other automakers or selling its digital assets (Bitcoin) for a profit. It's hard to envision Tesla being worth $1.4 trillion without even demonstrating to Wall Street that it can generate a recurring profit from selling EVs.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nJD.com: Implied upside of 101%\nWall Street is also expecting big things from China's second-largest online retailer, JD.com (NASDAQ:JD). Though the consensus of all analysts is that JD offers a hearty 43% upside, one analyst foresees the company making a currency-converted run at close to $105 a share. This implies potential gains of 101% for the e-commerce giant.\nWall Street's fascination with JD has to do with its similarities to Amazon.com and its (pardon the pun) prime location (i.e., at the heart of China's rapidly growing economy). Though the company does, in certain instances, act as a third-party marketplace, it's primarily a direct retailer of goods to online shoppers and maintains its own inventory. Having greater control over product quality and logistics is what's helped Amazon to generate insane amounts of cash flow, and it should do the same for JD. As of the end of March, JD's annual active customer count was a stone's throw from 500 million, up 29% from the prior-year period.\nEqually exciting is the rapid growth JD is experiencing from its service operations, which encompasses things like healthcare services, cloud services, and advertising. In late April, Cloudflare announced that it would partner with JD to expand its network in China. For JD, Cloudflare's use of its cloud infrastructure will create another channel of fast-growing sales. In Q1, this service segment grew sales by a blistering 73% from the prior-year quarter.\nHowever, JD is far from being the only fish in the pond in the world's second-largest economy. Though being a direct retailer comes with its advantages, it's nevertheless under constant pressure from the likes of Alibaba and Pinduoduo. Even Tencent Holdings, which has been a longtime shareholder of JD, is a potential threat with its slow but steady push into mobile e-commerce.\nYet, even with increasing competition and regulatory uncertainty in China, JD offers a very realistic shot at eventually hitting Wall Street's upper echelon price target. Take note, I'm not saying JD gets there within 12 months, as is the common timeframe for Wall Street price targets. But within the next few years, $105 is a very realistic target given its 20%-plus sustainable growth rate and cloud services push.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nNetflix: Implied upside of 124%\nThe last megacap stock that Wall Street believes has the potential to double is streaming content provider Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX). The most aggressive price target on Wall Street foresees Netflix galloping to $1,154 a share, or 124% higher than where the company settled this past week.\nSimilar to Tesla, Wall Street's fascination with Netflix has a lot to do with the company's first-mover advantage. Folks were scratching their heads when CEO Reed Hastings decided to shift away from a highly profitable DVD-delivery business and focus his company's attention on streaming. With hindsight being 20/20, we know this was a genius move. Netflix ended June with almost 209.2 million global streaming subscribers.\nNetflix also has a long history of turning heads thanks to its original programming. It's released dozens of original shows and movies, many of which have turned casual subscribers into users who become hooked on the service.\nBut there are also a number of good reasons to believe that $1,154 isn't achievable. For instance, competition in the streaming space has been steadily picking up, with Netflix losing some of its share in the United States. In particular, Walt Disney's streaming service Disney+ took just 16 months to go from launch to more than 100 million subscribers. The timing of the pandemic certainly helped Disney+, however its ascension can't be ignored.\nFurthermore, there's uncertainty about subscriber growth in a post-pandemic world. Make no mistake about it, we're still in a global pandemic. But with vaccination rates climbing, it's a fair assumption that people are going to be spending more time outside their homes rather than in front of their televisions or laptops. This could certainly slow Netflix's subscriber growth.\nA final reason for skepticism in this high-water price target is Netflix's long history of net cash outflows. It's no secret that Netflix wants to expand internationally, and it's willing to spend big to gobble up international streaming share. Call options volume, which rose almost 200% on Monday compared to Friday, is perhaps the biggest reason NIO shares might be more volatile.</p>\n<p>Call options give the holder the right to buy a stock at a fixed price. (Buying a call is a bullish take on the underlying stock.) Brokers will sell and trade options contracts because they want to earn a commission on a trade. But brokers don’t want to be short a call option, which means they’ll have to take a loss if the stock rises.</p>\n<p>One way brokers can hedge options positions is to buy the underlying stock. If a broker sells a call and buys the stock, they can earn the options commission and, if the stock rises, they can deliver the stock purchased to the call holder. In that scenario, the broker doesn’t have to buy shares at a higher price. That process is one way higher-than-average call buying can drive buying in the underlying stock.</p>\n<p>Other factors don’t seem to be at play. Wall Street, for example, can’t be credited with the rally. The average analystprice targetfor NIO stock is up about 1% over the past month and not much has happened to those targets since the companyreported earningsat the end of April. Looking back to that point, the average analyst price target has gone up about $1 to a little more than $59 a share.</p>\n<p>News doesn’t seem to be a credible reason for NIO’s rally, either. The last release on NIO’s website is fromJune 1when the company reported May deliveries. Those numbers relieved investors because the electric vehicle company maintained second-quarter delivery guidance despite a global automotive semiconductor shortage that has roiled the entire industry.</p>\n<p>NIO shares are now up 1% year to date. While a surge in the volume of options trading isn’t a perfect explanation for the rally, it certainlyhelped shares soaron Monday.\nNIO (ticker: NIO) stock gained almost 10% Monday and shares are up 28% over the past month. The S&P 500,for comparison, rose 0.2% Monday and is up 2% over the past month. Call options volume, which rose almost 200% on Monday compared to Friday, is perhaps the biggest reason NIO shares might be more volatile.\nCall options give the holder the right to buy a stock at a fixed price. (Buying a call is a bullish take on the underlying stock.) Brokers will sell and trade options contracts because they want to earn a commission on a trade. But brokers don’t want to be short a call option, which means they’ll have to take a loss if the stock rises.\nOne way brokers can hedge options positions is to buy the underlying stock. If a broker sells a call and buys the stock, they can earn the options commission and, if the stock rises, they can deliver the stock purchased to the call holder. In that scenario, the broker doesn’t have to buy shares at a higher price. That process is one way higher-than-average call buying can drive buying in the underlying stock.\nOther factors don’t seem to be at play. Wall Street, for example, can’t be credited with the rally. The average analystprice targetfor NIO stock is up about 1% over the past month and not much has happened to those targets since the companyreported earningsat the end of April. Looking back to that point, the average analyst price target has gone up about $1 to a little more than $59 a share.\nNews doesn’t seem to be a credible reason for NIO’s rally, either. The last release on NIO’s website is fromJune 1when the company reported May deliveries. Those numbers relieved investors because the electric vehicle company maintained second-quarter delivery guidance despite a global automotive semiconductor shortage that has roiled the entire industry.\nNIO shares are now up 1% year to date. It’s been a wild ride so far in 2021.
