Despite putting their money to work in equities for more than a century, retail investors moved stock prices like never before.</p>\n<p>The handful of companies these retail folks have piled into have come to be known as the \"meme stocks\" -- essentially, companies valued more for the hype they create on social media than their operating performance. At the top of the list for most meme investors is movie theater chain <b>AMC Entertainment</b> (NYSE:AMC), which until this past week was the top-performing stock on a year-to-date basis.</p>\n<h2>Wall Street and investors are wising up to the AMC pump-and-dump scheme</h2>\n<p>Unfortunately, AMC doesn't look as if it'll ever be \"going to the moon.\"</p>\n<p>The bull thesis for AMC, which disregards virtually all concrete fundamental data, relies on social media hype, constant misinformation, and outright lies to fuel an artificially higher share price. The problem is that Wall Street and investors are wising up to the misinformation and deceptive tactics being employed by AMC's emotionally driven retail investors, known as apes, which has resulted in AMC's shares losing 42% since June 28, with a lot more downside to go.</p>\n<p>Prior to the pandemic, AMC was never worth more than $3.8 billion. Today, with vaccination rates on the rise, AMC is worth $17 billion and it's:</p>\n<ul>\n <li>Nowhere near the peak sales produced before the pandemic.</li>\n <li>Losing money hand over fist, compared to being profitable prior to the pandemic.</li>\n <li>Contending with billions of dollars in additional debt.</li>\n <li>Carrying around $473 million in deferred rental obligations, as of the end of March.</li>\n <li>Clearly losing revenue to streaming competitors (e.g., <b>Walt Disney</b>'s Disney+ garnering $60 million in debut weekend revenue for <i>Black Widow</i>).</li>\n</ul>\n<p>To boot, virtually all claims made by apes to ignite a rally in AMC's share price can be easily proved as false or misleading. Consider the following as two good examples of ongoing mistruths designed to artificially inflate AMC's share price:</p>\n<ul>\n <li>Shares sold short have declined from around 102 million at the end of May to about 75.5 million as of the end of June, according to official (not estimated) data. Apes claiming short interest is climbing or \"shorts haven't covered\" are flat out wrong. This also severely dents the idea that \"a short squeeze is coming,\" which you'll hear echoed daily on social media without any proof or basis.</li>\n <li>Buying and short-selling stock has no impact whatsoever on the performance of an underlying business. This disproves the idea that short-selling bankrupts companies (a core and blatantly incorrect thesis of apes), and it also demonstrates that apes didn't save AMC. The capital that saved AMC from immediate bankruptcy came from share sales and debt issuances in 2020 and early January. Operating performance, not buying and selling activity from investors, determines if a company is successful or fails.</li>\n</ul>\n<p>It may be a choppy road lower, but make no mistake about it, the jig is up and we've entered the dump phase of the cycle.</p>\n<h2>This trio of stocks can go to the moon</h2>\n<p>The good news is that there <i>are</i> companies out there with tangible growth potential that really could go to the moon. If you allow your investment thesis to play out, all three of the following stocks can blast off.</p>\n<h2>Sea Limited</h2>\n<p>Don't let anyone tell you large-cap stocks can't go to the moon. Despite its seemingly lofty $144 billion market cap, Singapore-based <b>Sea Limited</b> (NYSE:SE) has three rapidly growing operating segments that could make investors rich.</p>\n<p>For the moment, Sea is generating all of its positive earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) from its gaming division. The popularity of Sea's mobile games, coupled with the pandemic keeping more people in their homes, pushed the company's quarterly active users higher by 61% in the first quarter to 649 million. More importantly, 12.3% of these users were paying to play, which is considerably higher than the industry average.</p>\n<p>Over the long run, e-commerce platform Shopee is what'll generate the most buzz. For example, the $12.6 billion in gross merchandise value (GMV) that was purchased on Shopee in Q1 2021 handily surpasses total GMV from all of 2018. Shopee is the most downloaded shopping app in Southeast Asia, and it's quickly gaining traction in Brazil.</p>\n<p>Thirdly, Sea has a relatively nascent but fast-growing digital financial services segment. When the first quarter came to a close, it had more than 26 million paying mobile wallet customers. Since many of the emerging markets Sea operates in are somewhat underbanked, this digital financial services division could be a sneaky long-term growth driver.</p>\n<h2>Skillz</h2>\n<p>Another high-growth stock that could eventually go to the moon is esports and gaming company <b>Skillz</b> (NYSE:SKLZ).</p>\n<p>Admittedly, gaming is a highly competitive industry. Developing new games is a time-consuming and costly process, and there's no guarantee that a new game will be well-received. It's for all of these reasons that Skillz didn't go the traditional development route. Rather, it operates a gaming platform that allows players to compete against each other for cash prizes. Maintaining this platform doesn't cost an arm and a leg (gross margin has consistently been 95%), and both Skillz and gaming developers get to keep a cut of the cash prizes.</p>\n<p>When the first quarter came to a close, Skillz had approximately 467,000 monthly active users (MAUs) that were paying to pay on its platform. That's 17% of its MAU base. According to Wappier Gaming Apps, the conversion rate for paying gamers ranged from 1.6% to 2% in 2020. In other words, Skillz is converting casual gamers to paying members at a considerably higher rate than other gaming companies.</p>\n<p>Skillz also has an incredibly lucrative partnership in its back pocket. In February, it signed a multiyear agreement with the National Football League (NFL). Football is the most popular sport by a long shot in the U.S. The expectation is that we'll see NFL-themed games and competitions hitting the platform by no later than 2022.</p>\n<p>Though Skillz is likely to lose money through 2022 as it beefs up marketing, its insane growth potential and potentially lucrative margins can't be overlooked.</p>\n<h2>Trulieve Cannabis</h2>\n<p>A final stock that can go to the moon is U.S. marijuana stock <b>Trulieve Cannabis</b> (OTC:TCNNF). According to <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/NFC.U\">New Frontier</a> Data, the U.S. pot industry could be generating north of $41 billion in annual sales by 2025.</p>\n<p>Whereas most U.S. multistate operators are angling to have a presence in as many legalized markets as possible, Trulieve has taken on a strategy that looked odd at first, but has paid off incredibly well. Of the 91 dispensaries it had open in early July, 85 of them were located in medical marijuana-legal Florida. By absolutely saturating the Sunshine State, Trulieve has effectively gobbled up around half of all dried cannabis flower and oils market share. At the same time, its marketing costs have been kept low, pushing the company to 13 consecutive quarters of profitability.</p>\n<p>But make no mistake about it, Trulieve does have aspirations of moving beyond Florida. For instance, it recently announced the largest U.S. cannabis acquisition in history -- a $2.1 billion all-stock deal to acquire multistate operator <b>Harvest Health &amp; Recreation</b> (OTC:HRVSF). Harvest has a focus on five states, <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> of which is Florida. This means Trulieve's presence in the Sunshine State will soon get even bigger.</p>\n<p>However, the real lure of this deal is the 15 dispensaries Harvest Health operates in its home market of Arizona, a state that legalized recreational weed in November. Trulieve shouldn't have any problem taking its Florida blueprint and applying it in other key markets. At the top of the list for most meme investors is movie theater chain AMC Entertainment (NYSE:AMC), which until this past week was the top-performing stock on a year-to-date basis.\nWall Street and investors are wising up to the AMC pump-and-dump scheme\nUnfortunately, AMC doesn't look as if it'll ever be \"going to the moon.\"\nThe bull thesis for AMC, which disregards virtually all concrete fundamental data, relies on social media hype, constant misinformation, and outright lies to fuel an artificially higher share price. The problem is that Wall Street and investors are wising up to the misinformation and deceptive tactics being employed by AMC's emotionally driven retail investors, known as apes, which has resulted in AMC's shares losing 42% since June 28, with a lot more downside to go.\nPrior to the pandemic, AMC was never worth more than $3.8 billion. Today, with vaccination rates on the rise, AMC is worth $17 billion and it's:\n\nNowhere near the peak sales produced before the pandemic.\nLosing money hand over fist, compared to being profitable prior to the pandemic.\nContending with billions of dollars in additional debt.\nCarrying around $473 million in deferred rental obligations, as of the end of March.\nClearly losing revenue to streaming competitors (e.g., Walt Disney's Disney+ garnering $60 million in debut weekend revenue for Black Widow).\n\nTo boot, virtually all claims made by apes to ignite a rally in AMC's share price can be easily proved as false or misleading. Consider the following as two good examples of ongoing mistruths designed to artificially inflate AMC's share price:\n\nShares sold short have declined from around 102 million at the end of May to about 75.5 million as of the end of June, according to official (not estimated) data. Apes claiming short interest is climbing or \"shorts haven't covered\" are flat out wrong. This also severely dents the idea that \"a short squeeze is coming,\" which you'll hear echoed daily on social media without any proof or basis.\nBuying and short-selling stock has no impact whatsoever on the performance of an underlying business. This disproves the idea that short-selling bankrupts companies (a core and blatantly incorrect thesis of apes), and it also demonstrates that apes didn't save AMC. The capital that saved AMC from immediate bankruptcy came from share sales and debt issuances in 2020 and early January. Operating performance, not buying and selling activity from investors, determines if a company is successful or fails.\n\nIt may be a choppy road lower, but make no mistake about it, the jig is up and we've entered the dump phase of the cycle.\nThis trio of stocks can go to the moon\nThe good news is that there are companies out there with tangible growth potential that really could go to the moon. If you allow your investment thesis to play out, all three of the following stocks can blast off.\nSea Limited\nDon't let anyone tell you large-cap stocks can't go to the moon. Despite its seemingly lofty $144 billion market cap, Singapore-based Sea Limited (NYSE:SE) has three rapidly growing operating segments that could make investors rich.\nFor the moment, Sea is generating all of its positive earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) from its gaming division. The popularity of Sea's mobile games, coupled with the pandemic keeping more people in their homes, pushed the company's quarterly active users higher by 61% in the first quarter to 649 million. More importantly, 12.3% of these users were paying to play, which is considerably higher than the industry average.\nOver the long run, e-commerce platform Shopee is what'll generate the most buzz. For example, the $12.6 billion in gross merchandise value (GMV) that was purchased on Shopee in Q1 2021 handily surpasses total GMV from all of 2018. Shopee is the most downloaded shopping app in Southeast Asia, and it's quickly gaining traction in Brazil.\nThirdly, Sea has a relatively nascent but fast-growing digital financial services segment. When the first quarter came to a close, it had more than 26 million paying mobile wallet customers. Since many of the emerging markets Sea operates in are somewhat underbanked, this digital financial services division could be a sneaky long-term growth driver.\nSkillz\nAnother high-growth stock that could eventually go to the moon is esports and gaming company Skillz (NYSE:SKLZ).\nAdmittedly, gaming is a highly competitive industry. Developing new games is a time-consuming and costly process, and there's no guarantee that a new game will be well-received. It's for all of these reasons that Skillz didn't go the traditional development route. Rather, it operates a gaming platform that allows players to compete against each other for cash prizes. Maintaining this platform doesn't cost an arm and a leg (gross margin has consistently been 95%), and both Skillz and gaming developers get to keep a cut of the cash prizes.\nWhen the first quarter came to a close, Skillz had approximately 467,000 monthly active users (MAUs) that were paying to pay on its platform. That's 17% of its MAU base. According to Wappier Gaming Apps, the conversion rate for paying gamers ranged from 1.6% to 2% in 2020. In other words, Skillz is converting casual gamers to paying members at a considerably higher rate than other gaming companies.\nSkillz also has an incredibly lucrative partnership in its back pocket. In February, it signed a multiyear agreement with the National Football League (NFL). Football is the most popular sport by a long shot in the U.S. The expectation is that we'll see NFL-themed games and competitions hitting the platform by no later than 2022.\nThough Skillz is likely to lose money through 2022 as it beefs up marketing, its insane growth potential and potentially lucrative margins can't be overlooked.\nTrulieve Cannabis\nA final stock that can go to the moon is U.S. marijuana stock Trulieve Cannabis (OTC:TCNNF). According to New Frontier Data, the U.S. pot industry could be generating north of $41 billion in annual sales by 2025.\nWhereas most U.S. multistate operators are angling to have a presence in as many legalized markets as possible, Trulieve has taken on a strategy that looked odd at first, but has paid off incredibly well. Of the 91 dispensaries it had open in early July, 85 of them were located in medical marijuana-legal Florida. By absolutely saturating the Sunshine State, Trulieve has effectively gobbled up around half of all dried cannabis flower and oils market share. At the same time, its marketing costs have been kept low, pushing the company to 13 consecutive quarters of profitability.\nBut make no mistake about it, Trulieve does have aspirations of moving beyond Florida. For instance, it recently announced the largest U.S. cannabis acquisition in history -- a $2.1 billion all-stock deal to acquire multistate operator Harvest Health & Recreation (OTC:HRVSF). Harvest has a focus on five states, one of which is Florida. This means Trulieve's presence in the Sunshine State will soon get even bigger.\nHowever, the real lure of this deal is the 15 dispensaries Harvest Health operates in its home market of Arizona, a state that legalized recreational weed in November. Trulieve shouldn't have any problem taking its Florida blueprint and applying it in other key markets. However, seeing where analysts believe there are difficulties ahead for certain stocks could be a great place to start your research -- whether you agree with them or vehemently disagree. Below, we'll look at three stocks that the most pessimistic analysts on Wall Street see plunging 50% or more in the near future, with the goal of providing some insight that could help you make your own decision.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1d1f7dc1f700e609bc5edb8afc726c47\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"540\"><span>IMAGE SOURCE: GETTY IMAGES.</span></p>\n<p><b>1. Transocean</b></p>\n<p>Shares of drilling specialist&nbsp;<b>Transocean</b>(NYSE:RIG)&nbsp;have seen a lot of ups and downs in recent years, and unfortunately, long-term investors have suffered through a lot more down times. With oil prices having fallen from triple-digit levels, Transocean's stock has lost more than 90% of its value since the early to mid-2010s. Yet more recently, the stock has perked up along with rising crude prices, jumping nearly sevenfold from its worst levels just last October.</p>\n<p>Most analysts seem to think the driller's shares have come too far too quickly. Currently trading at nearly $4.50 per share, the average price target is 44% lower at $2.50. The lowest target is at just $0.50 per share -- nearly 90% lower than current share prices.</p>\n<p>Comments from&nbsp;<b>Barclays</b>&nbsp;are fairly representative of what Wall Street is saying about Transocean. In March, Barclays cut its rating from equal weight to underweight, and its $2 price target for the stock represented a more than 50% haircut from where the stock was trading at the time. Barclays argued the share price seemed overly optimistic about a&nbsp;recovery in offshore drilling activity.</p>\n<p>Nevertheless, crude prices have continued to rise since then, and the stock has climbed despite short interest of about 14% of Transocean's current float. Further strength in oil markets should help Transocean's business, but it's unclear whether the stock has already taken a recovery into account.</p>\n<p><b>2. American Airlines Group</b></p>\n<p>A different recovery play is somewhat more controversial.<b>American Airlines Group</b>(NASDAQ:AAL)&nbsp;saw its stock plunge at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, as air travel ground to a halt. Massive losses have plagued the airline since, and those losses could continue well into the future. Yet hopes for a long-term recovery have helped American's stock regain much of the ground it lost.</p>\n<p>Analysts are also divided on American's prospects.<b>Jefferies</b>&nbsp;upgraded the stock from underperform to hold and set a $25 per share price target, pointing to recovery prospects that should outweigh the danger from high debt levels. Analysts at Susquehanna, however, haven't budged from their negative rating on American, and its $10 per share price target reflected the belief that&nbsp;domestic-only airlines&nbsp;would likely outperform in the early stage of the recovery as international pandemic-related restrictions have remained in place.</p>\n<p>With short interest of more than 14% of the stock's float, American has a large contingent of investors betting against it. Yet theairlines&nbsp; have been popular picks among retail investors, and that sets up the tug of war that we've seen with many companies in recent months.</p>\n<p><b>3. AMC Entertainment Holdings</b></p>\n<p>Finally,<b>AMC Entertainment Holdings</b>(NYSE:AMC)is a big battleground in the investing community. The movie theater operator's stock has soared 2,500% since the beginning of the year. Yet analysts are universally convinced that the share price will fall back to earth, with price targets ranging from $16 on the high side to just $1 on the low side. Those calls imply declines of 70% to 98% from current levels.</p>\n<p>Here, though, the investment community itself has defied those analyst calls. In early June, AMC raised $587 million by selling 11.55 million shares at a price above $50 per share. That was a huge improvement over an earlier capital raise in late April and early May of 43 million shares at an average stock price just under $10.</p>\n<p>Despite -- or perhaps because of -- the huge run-up in AMC's stock price, short interest remains high at 17% of float. It's inevitable that AMC's business will improve when people return to theaters again in full force, butwhether the stock can hold onto its gainsis a different story entirely.</p>\n<p><b>Will Wall Street win?</b></p>\n<p>Wall Street has been notoriously wrong with some of its short-selling calls in recent months. In many investors' minds, that makes bearish picks like these potential<i>buy</i>candidates rather than stocks to be shunned.</p>\n<p>Nevertheless, all three of these stocks serve as reminders that stock prices rise in advance of improving industry conditions. Yet the WallStreetBets phenomenon has crushed some major institutions that have tried using that strategy, sending some stocks sharply higher despite their challenges.\nWall Street analysts are usually reluctant to recommend against stocks, and they certainly don't have a perfect track record. However, seeing where analysts believe there are difficulties ahead for certain stocks could be a great place to start your research -- whether you agree with them or vehemently disagree. Below, we'll look at three stocks that the most pessimistic analysts on Wall Street see plunging 50% or more in the near future, with the goal of providing some insight that could help you make your own decision.\nIMAGE SOURCE: GETTY IMAGES.\n1. Transocean\nShares of drilling specialist Transocean(NYSE:RIG) have seen a lot of ups and downs in recent years, and unfortunately, long-term investors have suffered through a lot more down times. With oil prices having fallen from triple-digit levels, Transocean's stock has lost more than 90% of its value since the early to mid-2010s. Yet more recently, the stock has perked up along with rising crude prices, jumping nearly sevenfold from its worst levels just last October.\nMost analysts seem to think the driller's shares have come too far too quickly. Currently trading at nearly $4.50 per share, the average price target is 44% lower at $2.50. The lowest target is at just $0.50 per share -- nearly 90% lower than current share prices.\nComments from Barclays are fairly representative of what Wall Street is saying about Transocean. In March, Barclays cut its rating from equal weight to underweight, and its $2 price target for the stock represented a more than 50% haircut from where the stock was trading at the time. Barclays argued the share price seemed overly optimistic about a recovery in offshore drilling activity.\nNevertheless, crude prices have continued to rise since then, and the stock has climbed despite short interest of about 14% of Transocean's current float. Further strength in oil markets should help Transocean's business, but it's unclear whether the stock has already taken a recovery into account.\n2. American Airlines Group\nA different recovery play is somewhat more controversial.American Airlines Group(NASDAQ:AAL) saw its stock plunge at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, as air travel ground to a halt. Massive losses have plagued the airline since, and those losses could continue well into the future. Yet hopes for a long-term recovery have helped American's stock regain much of the ground it lost.\nAnalysts are also divided on American's prospects.Jefferies upgraded the stock from underperform to hold and set a $25 per share price target, pointing to recovery prospects that should outweigh the danger from high debt levels. Analysts at Susquehanna, however, haven't budged from their negative rating on American, and its $10 per share price target reflected the belief that domestic-only airlines would likely outperform in the early stage of the recovery as international pandemic-related restrictions have remained in place.\nWith short interest of more than 14% of the stock's float, American has a large contingent of investors betting against it. Yet theairlines  have been popular picks among retail investors, and that sets up the tug of war that we've seen with many companies in recent months.\n3. AMC Entertainment Holdings\nFinally,AMC Entertainment Holdings(NYSE:AMC)is a big battleground in the investing community. The movie theater operator's stock has soared 2,500% since the beginning of the year. Yet analysts are universally convinced that the share price will fall back to earth, with price targets ranging from $16 on the high side to just $1 on the low side. Those calls imply declines of 70% to 98% from current levels.\nHere, though, the investment community itself has defied those analyst calls. In early June, AMC raised $587 million by selling 11.55 million shares at a price above $50 per share. That was a huge improvement over an earlier capital raise in late April and early May of 43 million shares at an average stock price just under $10.\nDespite -- or perhaps because of -- the huge run-up in AMC's stock price, short interest remains high at 17% of float. It's inevitable that AMC's business will improve when people return to theaters again in full force, butwhether the stock can hold onto its gainsis a different story entirely.\nWill Wall Street win?\nWall Street has been notoriously wrong with some of its short-selling calls in recent months. But hidden amid the meme stocks, SPACs, and crypto coins could be some valuable businesses.</p>\n<p>“Somewhere in the hundreds of SPACs and scores of meme stocks are some decent companies and potentially even a few huge opportunities,” DataTrek’s Nicholas Colas wrote in a note this week. “For example: Hertz, which was supposed to be a retail investor graveyard, actually exited bankruptcy with its equity value intact. The same exact thing happened with U-Haul about 20 years ago, by the way.”</p>\n<p>While many of the assets used for speculation may have similar price spikes as viral interest or short interest affect people’s perceptions, most of these things are all pretty different, with different stories and long term possibilities.</p>\n<p>Take Hertz. Last year, the company was bankrupt and shares were on a roller coaster – investors could try to double or triple their money in a day. But if an investor held on and didn’t sell shares out of boredom or when the stock stopped being compelling (Yahoo Finance traffic data showed interest and trading volume fell off in July 2020 they would be in a pretty good situation, returns-wise.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/65a250ca4c5310d48d33b9614cd6f6a5\" tg-width=\"678\" tg-height=\"565\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Hertz had fallen from a June 2020 peak of over $6 to well under a dollar during the months after interest waned and was delisted from the NYSE in 2020. But in May, it ended up being worth over $6 a share when the company emerged from bankruptcy via auction, rewarding shareholders who stayed.</p>\n<p>The only thesis there would have been “this name-brand rental car company would get its mojo back when people start renting cars again,” not a huge jump.</p>\n<h3><b>'Meme’ stocks and SPACs could have moonshot potential, even if tiny</b></h3>\n<p>On the SPAC boom, Colas mused that most will probably fail or at least “dramatically underperform,” but that “somewhere in this barrage of moonshots there will almost certainly be a few huge winners that leverage disruptive technology.”</p>\n<p>According to a Reuters investigation, 100 SPACs, most of which began trading last year, gained just 2% from their first-traded prices, dramatically underperforming the S&amp;P 500 index.</p>\n<p>But Colas has a reminder that there is an easy way to get exposure to any breakaway successes in the SPAC world — by simply getting involved in a broad equity portfolio like the S&amp;P 500.</p>\n<p>“If you own a diversified US equity portfolio like the S&amp;P 500, then SPACs and meme stocks are basically free call options,” Colas wrote. “Somewhere in that basket of oddball ideas could be the next Amazon or Apple, and you absolutely want to see those companies funded. At some point, the 1 percent of SPACs that actually work will end up in the S&amp;P 500, driving future returns. And the 99 percent that fail will have cost you nothing.”</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ebd83ac5026e8ce00574edaae7d0a630\" tg-width=\"677\" tg-height=\"568\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>While you might not get the jaw-dropping ground-floor gains, a transformative company would have plenty of gains still to give an index after it’s added. Just look at Apple, Amazon, or even Tesla. If the company is a good <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a>, it will do well, and even if you don’t get those ground-floor gains, not having the losers is a huge advantage.</p>\n<p>This is key because you never know what’s going to happen. For a SPAC with a nebulous business, you can have the moon in your sights. The vaguer things are, the higher you can shoot. But for GameStop, AMC, and Hertz, we’re talking about a game store, a movie theater chain, and a car-rental company — hardly the next Apple. At least, you’d think. And rightly so -- they are illustrating the power of communications, as traders and investors seek to follow momentum to big profits.</p><p>It's easy to dismiss the phenomenon, because it isn't based on companies' traditional measures of profitability or sales growth, ratios of share prices to earnings or sales, or even innovative products or services. But so much money is trading around these stocks that you should at least learn about what is going on.</p><p>Traders trying to understand the momentum and make quick gains will, of course, look at daily trading volumes and the immediate direction of share prices. But there are also measures of momentum among people communicating in Reddit's WallStreetBets channel and other social media. One of these, called a \"social sentiment analysis,\" was developed by HypeEquity and described here  by Thornton McEnery.</p><p>But you might also be interested in whether any of these stocks might make good long-term investments. Or you may want to see financial information and standard stock valuations for the meme stocks, as part of your arguments against them.</p><p><b>The meme stocks</b></p><p>In talk of meme stocks, there is an acronym, BANG. BlackBerry Ltd. (BB.T) is the first of the group of four, which also includes AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc., Nokia Corp. and GameStop Corp.. But there are four other meme stocks that have had a lot of recent social-media buzz and trading activity that we can add to make a list of eight.</p><p>Here they are, sorted by market capitalization in millions of dollars:</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/aba33d56ca09708aa22c36412ba22e13\" tg-width=\"1260\" tg-height=\"460\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>(FACTSET)</span></p><p>AMC's market capitalization is up more than sevenfold this year. All of the listed meme stocks' valuations have rocketed, although only by double digits for Nokia and Bed Bath &amp; Beyond.</p><p>The boards of directors of AMC and GameStop each took advantage of the excitement among traders and sold new shares to the public to raise billions of dollars. AMC announced and completed the sale of 11.55 million new shares  June 3.</p><p><b>Short interest</b></p><p>What started this year's meme-stock craze was an opportunity described on WallStreetBets to create short-squeezes on heavily shorted stocks.</p><p>Here's a definition of short-selling and its risks:</p><p>So you have unlimited risk if you short-sell stock -- you never know how high its price might go. If you buy shares outright (that is, take a long position), you have only risked the amount you invested.</p><p>If you have shorted a stock and its price has gone the wrong way -- up -- your broker might make a margin call, which means you need to deliver cash to cover the broker's risk. Short-sellers are told these rules by their brokers before entering short trades. But the margin requirements can lead to short squeezes when investors run out of cash. Brokers will force-sell the shares if the required cash margin isn't maintained by the investor/trader.</p><p>So at the early stage of meme-stock mania, the WallStreetBets crew was able to buy shares of heavily shorted stocks as a group, which drove their prices higher and even led to covering (at losses) by professionals. The resulting short-squeeze made a lot of money for traders whose timing was right. And the buzz has continued since then as the meme stocks have bounced up and down.</p><p>Here's a year-to-date chart showing total returns for the BANG stocks through June 3:</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ab1dfc0cfac9109e4ee8cc15580a220e\" tg-width=\"1259\" tg-height=\"1038\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>(FACTSET)</span></p><p>How much short interest is there now for this group of eight stocks? Here they are, ranked again by market cap:</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f2ed9c41992b0fdf7c30467bbb882e58\" tg-width=\"1259\" tg-height=\"499\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>(FACTSET)</span></p><p>FactSet's data on short positions as a percentage of shares outstanding is updated twice a month, with the second update around the 25th day of the month.</p><p>The \"dollars short\" figure is of interest, as it gives some additional perspective to the short percentages. For example, 4.2% of Tesla Inc. shares are sold short, but that amounts to $24.2 billion in short interest, because the market cap is $583 billion.</p><p>In late January,when GameStop had a seemingly impossible 138% in short interest, Brad Lamensdorf, CEO of ActiveAlts in Westport, Conn., who runs long and short investment strategies, said a short percentage “over 30% to 40% is outrageously high.” At that time we listed 30 stocks in the S&amp;P Composite 1500 Index that were shorted 25% or more. (Lamensdorf co-manages the AdvisorShares Ranger Equity Bear ETF,which is meant to be used as a hedging tool.)</p><p>But now, only four stocks in the index are short 25% or more, according to FactSet's most recent data: Geo Group Inc., which operates prisons, with 33.2% short interest, Bed Bath Beyond, PetMed Express Inc., with 28.7% short interest and B&amp;G Foods Inc., with 25.8% of shares sold short. (Getting back to Geo Group, President Biden signed an executive order to phase-out federal contracts with private prison operator</p><p>So this year's action with the meme stocks has had quite an effect on the stock market, quelling short-selling in general. That said, even with low short-interest numbers for Nokia and Koss Corp., both stocks have had short-squeezes this year.</p><p><b>Meme stocks' fundamentals</b></p><p>To analyze the meme companies' financial results and prospects, we will look back and then ahead. The coronavirus pandemic had an obvious brutal affect on AMC, as its theaters were all closed. It had reopened nearly all U.S. theaters with limited capacity by he end of March.</p><p>GameStop has been challenged for years by a fundamental problem for a videogame retailer: More content being sold online, even for console gaming systems, rather than through Blu-ray or other media that were sold at the stores.</p><p>So AMC and GameStop were obvious candidates for shorting until traders were able to group together via Reddit and online trading applications, including Robinhood, to cause the short-squeezes.</p><p><b>Five-year review</b></p><p>First, let's look at the direction of all eight companies' sales results over the past five full fiscal years. We're looking at fiscal years because for several of these companies, fiscal years don't match the calendar:</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5d17671a0a5c84afe766af5c33337e8f\" tg-width=\"1260\" tg-height=\"535\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>(FACTSET)</span></p><p>Even before the pandemic, AMC's sales had declined during 2019. So did Nokia's, although the company is putting up impressive sales numbers for one that makes mobile telecommunications devices and isn't Apple Inc. or Samsung. GameStop has suffered four years of annual sales declines, while Bed Bath &amp; Beyond Inc. has been a little better.</p><p><b>Looking ahead -- sales</b></p><p>What if AMC and GameStop were able to put all that money they have raised to good use? Nokia looks cheap, and Wall Street analysts concur, as you will see below. And rightly so -- they are illustrating the power of communications, as traders and investors seek to follow momentum to big profits.It's easy to dismiss the phenomenon, because it isn't based on companies' traditional measures of profitability or sales growth, ratios of share prices to earnings or sales, or even innovative products or services. But so much money is trading around these stocks that you should at least learn about what is going on.Traders trying to understand the momentum and make quick gains will, of course, look at daily trading volumes and the immediate direction of share prices. But there are also measures of momentum among people communicating in Reddit's WallStreetBets channel and other social media. One of these, called a \"social sentiment analysis,\" was developed by HypeEquity and described here  by Thornton McEnery.But you might also be interested in whether any of these stocks might make good long-term investments. BlackBerry Ltd. (BB.T) is the first of the group of four, which also includes AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc., Nokia Corp. and GameStop Corp.. But there are four other meme stocks that have had a lot of recent social-media buzz and trading activity that we can add to make a list of eight.Here they are, sorted by market capitalization in millions of dollars:(FACTSET)AMC's market capitalization is up more than sevenfold this year. All of the listed meme stocks' valuations have rocketed, although only by double digits for Nokia and Bed Bath & Beyond.The boards of directors of AMC and GameStop each took advantage of the excitement among traders and sold new shares to the public to raise billions of dollars. AMC announced and completed the sale of 11.55 million new shares  June 3.Short interestWhat started this year's meme-stock craze was an opportunity described on WallStreetBets to create short-squeezes on heavily shorted stocks.Here's a definition of short-selling and its risks:So you have unlimited risk if you short-sell stock -- you never know how high its price might go. If you buy shares outright (that is, take a long position), you have only risked the amount you invested.If you have shorted a stock and its price has gone the wrong way -- up -- your broker might make a margin call, which means you need to deliver cash to cover the broker's risk. Short-sellers are told these rules by their brokers before entering short trades. But the margin requirements can lead to short squeezes when investors run out of cash. Brokers will force-sell the shares if the required cash margin isn't maintained by the investor/trader.So at the early stage of meme-stock mania, the WallStreetBets crew was able to buy shares of heavily shorted stocks as a group, which drove their prices higher and even led to covering (at losses) by professionals. The resulting short-squeeze made a lot of money for traders whose timing was right. Here they are, ranked again by market cap:(FACTSET)FactSet's data on short positions as a percentage of shares outstanding is updated twice a month, with the second update around the 25th day of the month.The \"dollars short\" figure is of interest, as it gives some additional perspective to the short percentages. For example, 4.2% of Tesla Inc. shares are sold short, but that amounts to $24.2 billion in short interest, because the market cap is $583 billion.In late January,when GameStop had a seemingly impossible 138% in short interest, Brad Lamensdorf, CEO of ActiveAlts in Westport, Conn., who runs long and short investment strategies, said a short percentage “over 30% to 40% is outrageously high.” At that time we listed 30 stocks in the S&P Composite 1500 Index that were shorted 25% or more. (Lamensdorf co-manages the AdvisorShares Ranger Equity Bear ETF,which is meant to be used as a hedging tool.)But now, only four stocks in the index are short 25% or more, according to FactSet's most recent data: Geo Group Inc., which operates prisons, with 33.2% short interest, Bed Bath Beyond, PetMed Express Inc., with 28.7% short interest and B&G Foods Inc., with 25.8% of shares sold short. That said, even with low short-interest numbers for Nokia and Koss Corp., both stocks have had short-squeezes this year.Meme stocks' fundamentalsTo analyze the meme companies' financial results and prospects, we will look back and then ahead. The coronavirus pandemic had an obvious brutal affect on AMC, as its theaters were all closed. It had reopened nearly all U.S. theaters with limited capacity by he end of March.GameStop has been challenged for years by a fundamental problem for a videogame retailer: More content being sold online, even for console gaming systems, rather than through Blu-ray or other media that were sold at the stores.So AMC and GameStop were obvious candidates for shorting until traders were able to group together via Reddit and online trading applications, including Robinhood, to cause the short-squeezes.Five-year reviewFirst, let's look at the direction of all eight companies' sales results over the past five full fiscal years.
