In such a gold rush-like environment, it's entirely possible that more companies than ever would be clamoring for funding from IIP to fuel their new operations. Pfizer expects the vaccine will rake in $33.5 billion over the entire year. Even with the company splitting profits with BioNTech, Pfizer should conservatively make in the ballpark of $17 billion from BNT162b2 this year.</p>\n<p>Even more money could be on the way. Pfizer is busy working on its next potential COVID-19 blockbuster -- and it isn't a vaccine.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2e39eb3485964eb8dab974f72921be8b\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"393\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"></p>\n<p>Image source: Getty Images.</p>\n<h3>Stopping the coronavirus in its tracks</h3>\n<p>Pfizer has stated for a while that it wouldn't restrict its efforts to fight COVID-19 to only vaccines. It has also focused on developing potential treatments for the infectious disease. The company provided an update on <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> especially promising therapy in its second-quarter conference call last week.</p>\n<p>Protease inhibitors are a class of antiviral drugs that have been effective in treating HIV and hepatitis C. These therapies bind to protease enzymes in viruses and prevent the virus from replicating.</p>\n<p>Pfizer initiated an early stage clinical study evaluating oral protease inhibitor PF-07321332 in March of this year. The company had good news to report from that study in its Q2 update.</p>\n<p>Chief scientific officer Mikael Dolsten said that in the phase 1 study, PF-07321332 exceeded the level predicted to inhibit coronavirus viral replication by more than fivefold. Dolsten also stated that the experimental protease inhibitor showed powerful antiviral activity in preclinical testing that could be effective against \"all currently known COVID-19 variants.\"</p>\n<p>So far, the experimental antiviral drug appears to have a good safety profile. Dolsten said that there haven't been any safety issues in giving doses of up to 500 milligrams twice per day over a 10-day period.</p>\n<p>Based on these encouraging results, Pfizer advanced the oral protease inhibitor into phase 2/3 testing in July. The company will evaluate PF-07321332 in five-day and 10-day treatments for individuals who have been in close contact with someone with COVID-19.</p>\n<h3>A big market opportunity</h3>\n<p>Pfizer estimates that the addressable market for its protease inhibitor could be in the hundreds of millions of patients. That doesn't seem farfetched considering the rapid spread of COVID-19 exposure due to the delta variant.</p>\n<p>The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has already granted Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) to <b>Regeneron</b>'s (NASDAQ:REGN) antibody cocktail REGEN-COV as a treatment for hospitalized COVID-19 patients and for post-exposure prophylaxis. However, there are a few drawbacks to Regeneron's therapy.</p>\n<p>First, REGEN-COV is expensive -- more than $2,000 per dose. Second, it must be administered via infusion or subcutaneous injection. Third, the current U.S. EUA for post-exposure prophylaxis only applies to individuals who have been exposed to COVID-19 who have a high risk of developing COVID-19 and who haven't been fully vaccinated.</p>\n<p>Pfizer's PF-07321332 would be much more convenient than REGEN-COV since it's taken orally. Although the big drugmaker hasn't given any hints about what the pricing for the antiviral therapy might be should it win EUA or approval, a lower price tag could open up a wide market that might include lower-risk individuals who are exposed to COVID-19.</p>\n<h3>Coming soon?</h3>\n<p>There shouldn't be a long wait for Pfizer's next potential COVID-19 blockbuster. Assuming the phase 2/3 testing goes well, the company thinks that it will be able to file for U.S. EUA in the fourth quarter of this year.</p>\n<p>Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said in the company's Q2 call that he's given the green light to manufacture \"significant quantities\" of the oral protease inhibitor so that large volumes of doses will be available if EUA is granted. He added that Pfizer is absorbing the risk of making this investment because \"it is the right thing to do.\"</p>\n<p>PF-07321332 probably won't be as big a catalyst for the big pharma stock as the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. However, Pfizer won't have to split the profits on the oral therapy as it does with BNT162b2. The COVID-19 vaccine BNT162b2, developed by Pfizer and BioNTech (NASDAQ:BNTX), generated sales of $7.8 billion in the first half of 2021 alone. Pfizer expects the vaccine will rake in $33.5 billion over the entire year. Even with the company splitting profits with BioNTech, Pfizer should conservatively make in the ballpark of $17 billion from BNT162b2 this year.\nEven more money could be on the way. Pfizer is busy working on its next potential COVID-19 blockbuster -- and it isn't a vaccine.\n\nImage source: Getty Images.\nStopping the coronavirus in its tracks\nPfizer has stated for a while that it wouldn't restrict its efforts to fight COVID-19 to only vaccines. It has also focused on developing potential treatments for the infectious disease. The company provided an update on one especially promising therapy in its second-quarter conference call last week.\nProtease inhibitors are a class of antiviral drugs that have been effective in treating HIV and hepatitis C. These therapies bind to protease enzymes in viruses and prevent the virus from replicating.\nPfizer initiated an early stage clinical study evaluating oral protease inhibitor PF-07321332 in March of this year. The company had good news to report from that study in its Q2 update.\nChief scientific officer Mikael Dolsten said that in the phase 1 study, PF-07321332 exceeded the level predicted to inhibit coronavirus viral replication by more than fivefold. Dolsten also stated that the experimental protease inhibitor showed powerful antiviral activity in preclinical testing that could be effective against \"all currently known COVID-19 variants.\"\nSo far, the experimental antiviral drug appears to have a good safety profile. Dolsten said that there haven't been any safety issues in giving doses of up to 500 milligrams twice per day over a 10-day period.\nBased on these encouraging results, Pfizer advanced the oral protease inhibitor into phase 2/3 testing in July. The company will evaluate PF-07321332 in five-day and 10-day treatments for individuals who have been in close contact with someone with COVID-19.\nA big market opportunity\nPfizer estimates that the addressable market for its protease inhibitor could be in the hundreds of millions of patients. That doesn't seem farfetched considering the rapid spread of COVID-19 exposure due to the delta variant.\nThe U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has already granted Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) to Regeneron's (NASDAQ:REGN) antibody cocktail REGEN-COV as a treatment for hospitalized COVID-19 patients and for post-exposure prophylaxis. However, there are a few drawbacks to Regeneron's therapy.\nFirst, REGEN-COV is expensive -- more than $2,000 per dose. Second, it must be administered via infusion or subcutaneous injection. Third, the current U.S. EUA for post-exposure prophylaxis only applies to individuals who have been exposed to COVID-19 who have a high risk of developing COVID-19 and who haven't been fully vaccinated.\nPfizer's PF-07321332 would be much more convenient than REGEN-COV since it's taken orally. Although the big drugmaker hasn't given any hints about what the pricing for the antiviral therapy might be should it win EUA or approval, a lower price tag could open up a wide market that might include lower-risk individuals who are exposed to COVID-19.\nComing soon?\nThere shouldn't be a long wait for Pfizer's next potential COVID-19 blockbuster. Assuming the phase 2/3 testing goes well, the company thinks that it will be able to file for U.S. EUA in the fourth quarter of this year.\nPfizer CEO Albert Bourla said in the company's Q2 call that he's given the green light to manufacture \"significant quantities\" of the oral protease inhibitor so that large volumes of doses will be available if EUA is granted. He added that Pfizer is absorbing the risk of making this investment because \"it is the right thing to do.\"\nPF-07321332 probably won't be as big a catalyst for the big pharma stock as the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. However, Pfizer won't have to split the profits on the oral therapy as it does with BNT162b2. Though BNPL services accounted for just 2% of U.S. e-commerce payments last year according to FIS Global, they're rapidly gaining in popularity. The value of purchases made using BNPL offerings rose 132% in the first quarter, per data from Cardify.ai.</p>\n<p>BNPL services are more prevalent overseas, accounting for more than 7% of European e-commerce transactions in 2020 and 10% of Australian ones, according to FIS Global. In Sweden, home to BNPL provider Klarna, installments accounted for 23% of e-commerce transactions last year.</p>\n<p>The installment wave has drawn the interest of established giants like <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/V\">Visa</a> Inc. (V) and <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/PYPL\">PayPal</a> Holdings Inc. (PYPL), as well as a host of newer fintech players that have carved out different paths as they seek to stake their claims in the nascent U.S. market.</p>\n<p>The trend is of growing relevance to investors. U.S. startup Affirm recently went public, while Australia's Afterpay Ltd. , which trades in its home country, is contemplating a U.S. listing given the growing importance of the U.S. market to its business. Sweden's Klarna is considering an IPO in the U.K ., according to Bloomberg, though its chief executive has expressed some concerns about potential regulations.</p>\n<p>In the credit-card model, merchants pay transaction fees when they accept card payments and consumers pay accrued interest if they carry a balance. BNPL services, which can sometimes be interest-free to the consumer, charge a steeper fee to merchants, who've been increasingly willing to pay up for the services so that consumers will be more inclined to go through with an online purchase.</p>\n<p>BNPL sits amid a number of attractive industry trends, according to Jefferies analyst John Hecht, who sees a $600 billion total transaction opportunity for the industry in the U.S., based on the value of e-commerce purchases made outside of Amazon.com Inc. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AMZN\">$(AMZN)$</a> He expects that the services could take a bite out of what he views as an $840 billion dollar total addressable market for fintech-enabled credit products.</p>\n<p>While BNPL offerings are structured differently than traditional credit, they aren't without risk. The various BNPL companies have different policies about missed payments, but some will charge late fees or report to the credit bureaus about failures to make good on payment commitments. The industry is largely unregulated and there are concerns that consumers could end up taking on more installment commitments than they can afford to pay back in the allotted timeframes, especially in a credit crunch.</p>\n<p>The companies have different approaches to the U.S. as they try to build or expand their BNPL businesses. MarketWatch spoke to executives at some of the leading offerings to find out their strategies for the market.</p>\n<p><b>Affirm</b></p>\n<p>While Peloton is Affirm's largest customer, the BNPL company has been expanding its merchant mix, which doubled from a year earlier in the latest quarter to reach almost 12,000 retailers.</p>\n<p>One move to diversify the company's merchant base is a recent arrangement with <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/SHOP\">Shopify Inc</a>. (SHOP.T) that makes it easy for the e-commerce company's merchants to enable Affirm's installment offerings. In exchange, Shopify got equity interest in Affirm.</p>\n<p>\"Because of the nature of the relationship, they have every incentive in the world to make sure it's successful,\" Chief Financial Officer Michael Linford said. He expects that the deal \"will add substantially more value to us than we had to give up\" since Shopify's vast merchant base is \"really difficult if not impossible to build.\"</p>\n<p>Affirm offers a mix of simple-interest and interest-free installment options, and Linford said that the company is particularly differentiated in its work with high-value purchases as its tech and risk-management capabilities enable it to \"create a lot of value for merchants.\" Affirm's underwriting determines which customers would be capable of making their installment payments on big-ticket items.</p>\n<p>At the same time, Affirm sees value in helping to facilitate ordinary spending as well, and it recently announced a debit card that will let people buy things and split them after the fact using their cards.</p>\n<p>The company doesn't charge late fees for customers who miss payments, according to Linford. For customers who ultimately fail to make good on smaller-value payments, the company may lock down access to the Affirm network going forward. Those who don't pay up for bigger-ticket items could be reported to a credit bureau.</p>\n<p>About 30% of Affirm transactions originate from within the company's \"properties\"--mainly its mobile app--rather than from merchants' own sites. The app is \"really, really powerful for re-engagement\" of users, Linford said, and merchants can pay to show new products or offers on the platform.</p>\n<p>As e-commerce booms, there's a \"quite aggressive fight to get any sort of mindshare,\" Linford said, and he argued that the platform holds appeal with brands looking to reach younger-generation consumers who have \"high intent and capacity to purchase.\"</p>\n<p>Because the company enables shopping from within its app, its customers can split purchases even from merchants that don't list Affirm as payment options on their own websites. There's no Affirm button on Amazon's traditional website, for instance, but the e-commerce giant is <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> of the largest merchants within the Affirm app, Linford said. Affirm uses virtual cards to split customers' Amazon purchases on the back end.</p>\n<p><b>Afterpay</b></p>\n<p>After helping to kick off the BNPL trend in Australia, Afterpay came to the U.S. market less than three years ago with a focus on interest-free offerings.</p>\n<p>Afterpay is \"not trying to upsell someone credit,\" Co-Chief Executive Nick Molnar told MarketWatch, and the company has been \"purposefully focused on the couple-hundred-dollar purchase\" thus far.</p>\n<p>The company charges a late fee after an initial grace period for consumers who fall behind on payments, and it cuts customers off from making future purchases until they pay back what they owe.</p>\n<p>\"Unlike a finance company that wants you to be late...with Afterpay you can't keep shopping\" after missing a payment, Molnar said. That dynamic fosters a better relationship with customers, in his view.</p>\n<p>Afterpay's North America merchant base grew more than 150% in the latest quarter relative to a year earlier. In the U.S., underlying sales, or the value of items purchased through its service, increased 211%.</p>\n<p>The company now works with 23,000 retail brands in the U.S. including Bed Bath &amp; Beyond Inc. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/BBBY\">$(BBBY)$</a> and Lululemon Athletica Inc. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/LULU\">$(LULU)$</a>. A recent partnership with Stripe made it easy for that company's merchants to easily activate Afterpay as a checkout option.</p>\n<p>The company may process 10% to 30% of transactions for its retail partners once enabled as a payment option, Molnar said.</p>\n<p>Afterpay is building a presence beyond the checkout button, with 17% of purchases globally during the month of February originating from Shop Directory, meaning that these customers are locating merchants through Afterpay's app or site.</p>\n<p>While Afterpay is relatively new in the U.S., its success in Australia \"puts into perspective where Afterpay can expand as a business,\" Molnar said. The index SLYG tracks includes stocks with the strongest growth traits based on sales growth, earnings change to price and momentum.</p>\n<p>Back to SLYV, financials accounted for the biggest sector weight at 24% of assets. Industrials weighed in at about 17%, consumer discretionary 15% and real estate 10%. Information technology was next at 8% and materials, energy and health care, 6% each.&nbsp;Smaller positions in consumer staples, utilities and communication services made up the rest.</p>\n<p>SPDR S&amp;P 600 Small Cap Value is in IBD's ETF Leaders, but SPDR S&amp;P 600 Small Cap Growth is not.</p>\n<p><b>GameStop Stock Leads</b></p>\n<p><b>GameStop</b>(GME),<b>Macy's</b>(M),<b>PDC Energy</b>(PDCE),<b>Resideo Technologies</b>(REZI) and<b>BankUnited</b>(BKU) were the top five holdings as of Wednesday.</p>\n<p><b>Pacific Premier Bancorp</b>(PPBI),<b>Bed Bath &amp; Beyond</b>(BBBY),<b>Ameris Bancorp</b>(ABCB),<b>First Hawaiian</b>(FHB) and<b>Insight Enterprises</b>(NSIT) rounded out the top 10.</p>\n<p>GameStop has undergone wide swings this year. It rocketed about 2,500% early this year amid theshort-squeeze rallyfueled by the Reddit/WallStreetBets crowd.GME stockthen crashed 92% from a Jan. 28 high to its mid-February low. That was followed by an 805% surge the next three weeks, and a 66% drop over the next two weeks.</p>\n<p>Action had been relatively subdued since, until Thursday's 27% dive. Even after that, GameStop stock was up 1,070% year to date through Thursday's close.</p>\n<p>Could GME be inflating SLYV's performance? Certainly, given its quadruple-digit gain. But a look at SLYG's portfolio is interesting. GameStop stock is also the top holding in the growth stock ETF, though the rest of the top 10 differ vastly.</p>\n<p><b>Second Meme Stock In Top 10</b></p>\n<p>PDC Energy, up 130%, saw the next biggest gain in the top 10. The Colorado-based oil and gas explorer has a 97Relative Strength Rating, which mean it's in the top 3% of all stocks. Its relative strength line is at a 52-week high, a bullish sign.</p>\n<p>Bed Bath &amp; Beyond, another meme stock, is up 78% this year. Shares surged more than 200% in January, amid a spate of wild double-digit swings. BBBY stock then gave back the bulk of its gains.</p>\n<p>But the home goods retailer appears to be back on the radar of the WallStreetBets discussion group. On June 2, Bed Bath &amp; Beyond soared 62% before diving 28% the next session.</p>\n<p>The rest of the top 10 stocks have also outperformed the broader market. Macy's is up 68% year to date, while Resideo, Pacific Premier and Ameris have risen more than 40% each. The lowest gainer, bank holding company First Hawaiian, has advanced 20%. I've spoken with a few of the stock's skeptics, and their refrain is always the same: Things are great right now, but legalization will wipe it out, so don't touch it. As a shareholder, I don't believe that this argument is true -- but let's break the issue down into bite-sized pieces to analyze it.</p>\n<h2>The bears might have a point</h2>\n<p>To appreciate how legalization might impact Innovative Industrial's stock, it's necessary to understand why it's so successful under the current legal scheme. One of the persistent problems for cannabis companies in the U.S. is that it's hard to raise money to expand, as major financial institutions are leery of the legality of working with the industry.</p>\n<p>That's why IIP is a lifesaver for those businesses. In case you aren't familiar, Innovative Industrial's business model is to run sale-leaseback transactions that result in cannabis companies getting liquid capital.</p>\n<p>For the uninitiated, sale-leasebacks are a type of real estate deal in which a company with working property sells it to a buyer like Innovative Industrial, which then promptly rents it right back to the seller. Leasebacks are a win-win because the cannabis business gets cash up front without any disruption to their production floor, and IIP gets another piece of property in its portfolio, as well as a trickle of rental income. Thanks to its steady drumbeat of signing new leasebacks, IIP has grown its quarterly revenue by more than 1,000% over the last three years and expanded its dividend by 328.6%.</p>\n<p>If the law eventually changes such that cannabis companies can get access to financing through traditional institutions like investment banks, they won't need to raise funds by doing sale-leaseback transactions with IIP. Though the option will remain on the table, it'll probably be easier to take on debt, which doesn't entail sacrificing ownership of property.</p>\n<p>In theory, that means IIP won't be able to expand its holdings as rapidly as it has in the past. IIP holds 76 marijuana-cultivation properties, and I like to joke that it's the industry's landlord. It's also one of my highest-conviction stocks.\nThe prospect of marijuana legalization has profound impacts for every player in the business, and IIP is no exception. I've spoken with a few of the stock's skeptics, and their refrain is always the same: Things are great right now, but legalization will wipe it out, so don't touch it. As a shareholder, I don't believe that this argument is true -- but let's break the issue down into bite-sized pieces to analyze it.\nThe bears might have a point\nTo appreciate how legalization might impact Innovative Industrial's stock, it's necessary to understand why it's so successful under the current legal scheme. One of the persistent problems for cannabis companies in the U.S. is that it's hard to raise money to expand, as major financial institutions are leery of the legality of working with the industry.\nThat's why IIP is a lifesaver for those businesses. In case you aren't familiar, Innovative Industrial's business model is to run sale-leaseback transactions that result in cannabis companies getting liquid capital.\nFor the uninitiated, sale-leasebacks are a type of real estate deal in which a company with working property sells it to a buyer like Innovative Industrial, which then promptly rents it right back to the seller. Leasebacks are a win-win because the cannabis business gets cash up front without any disruption to their production floor, and IIP gets another piece of property in its portfolio, as well as a trickle of rental income. Thanks to its steady drumbeat of signing new leasebacks, IIP has grown its quarterly revenue by more than 1,000% over the last three years and expanded its dividend by 328.6%.\nIf the law eventually changes such that cannabis companies can get access to financing through traditional institutions like investment banks, they won't need to raise funds by doing sale-leaseback transactions with IIP. Though the option will remain on the table, it'll probably be easier to take on debt, which doesn't entail sacrificing ownership of property.\nIn theory, that means IIP won't be able to expand its holdings as rapidly as it has in the past.
