The Apple Maven looks at three key metrics that may provide a clue.</p>\n<p>Following a “mini flash crash” in the last 10 minutes of trading on Tuesday, May 18, Apple stock (ticker $AAPL) dipped by more than 1% for the day once again. This was Apple’s fifth day of losses&nbsp;in the past seven trading sessions, as share price remainsstuck at late August 2020 levels.</p>\n<p>From here, investors must be asking themselves: is this a good time to buy Apple stock? The Apple Maven believes that three key metrics may help aspiring shareholders make the best decision.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ad10237664683dc4e202ae64f0c3d856\" tg-width=\"1007\" tg-height=\"470\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Figure 1: AAPL performance on May 18 session.</span></p>\n<p><b>Keep an eye on valuation</b></p>\n<p>Forward price-to-earnings, or P/E, is a popular and helpful valuation metric to track.</p>\n<p>The ratio compares the stock’s current price to the company’s expected current-year or next-year earnings per share, or EPS. It represents how many years’ worth of earnings the market is willing to pay on shares of equity. The lower the figure, the cheaper the stock, and the more appealing of a buy it is.</p>\n<p>Apple’s projected current-year EPS is $5.20, suggesting a forward P/E of exactly 24 times at the current stock price of nearly $125. This is the lowest multiple at which Apple stock has been valued compared to 30, 60, 90 days ago and this time last year. See chart below.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/51f2c0c8a7b3727ca797e4611a027eb8\" tg-width=\"1200\" tg-height=\"722\"><span>Figure 2: AAPL forward P/E today vs. past.</span></p>\n<p>In addition, AAPL’s P/E premium above the S&amp;P 500’s comparable ratio (orange dots above) is also currently about as low as it has been in the past 12 months: 3 turns higher than the broad market today vs. more than 7 turns one quarter ago and around 3.3 turns in May 2020.</p>\n<p>Based on P/E alone, therefore, Apple stock is looking particularly attractive at current levels compared to its own 12-month history and the S&amp;P 500.</p>\n<p><b>Updates to EPS growth</b></p>\n<p>A close cousin to P/E, another metric that could signal a buy of Apple stock is the company’s projected earnings growth trends. Compared to fiscal 2020, current year EPS growth estimates have been increasing progressively this year: 59% year-over-year today vs. 36% three months ago.</p>\n<p></p>\n<p>Some might choose to look a bit further out in the future – say, five years from now. Even so, growth rates have been trending in the right direction: currently at 13.4% annualized through fiscal 2025 vs. around 11% as of the beginning of 2021.</p>\n<p>Should earnings growth expectations continue to rise, this could be yet another indication that Apple stock might be worth owning at current prices, as the business fundamentals continue to improve.</p>\n<p><b>Will shares trend again?</b></p>\n<p>The third and final metric that might be worth monitoring are the stock’s moving averages. These are indicators that technical analysts (also known as chart readers) like to track to determine things like support, breakout patterns, etc.</p>\n<p>At a high level, the following interpretations of moving averages tend to be consensus among analysts:</p>\n<ul>\n <li>A stock that breaks through the averages on the way up is usually believed to be trending in a bullish manner. The opposite is true when share price moves below the averages.</li>\n <li>A stock that moves lower but not past the moving averages is believed to have found support.</li>\n <li>A stock that cannot move above the moving averages is believed to have met resistance.</li>\n</ul>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9bef78b042977e4d00cb4b406e9cb8bc\" tg-width=\"630\" tg-height=\"377\"><span>Figure 3: AAPL stock vs. 50-day and 200-day MA.</span></p>\n<p>A couple of interesting observations can be made from the chart above. First, the 50-trading day moving average served as a great buy and sell “advisor” between May 2019 and this time last year. During this period, AAPL clearly moved in trending patterns.</p>\n<p>Investors would have done well if they had paid close attention to the orange line above and:</p>\n<ol>\n <li>held Apple stock through February 2020;</li>\n <li>sold it once the share price dipped below the 50-day average, that same month;</li>\n <li>bought back once the stock breached the average on the way up, in April 2020;</li>\n <li>held again until September 2020.</li>\n</ol>\n<p>But after the third quarter of 2020, Apple stock seems to have traded sideways and choppily, except for a brief bullish period between November and January. Now, shares trade very much at the conversion point between the 50-day and the 200-day moving averages. Will the stock break out in either direction, finally catching another wave higher (or lower)?</p>\n<p>Also pay attention to the grey line above. Notice that Apple stock price has bounced off the 200-day moving average consistently over the past two years. This was Apple’s fifth day of losses in the past seven trading sessions, as share price remainsstuck at late August 2020 levels.\nFrom here, investors must be asking themselves: is this a good time to buy Apple stock? The Apple Maven believes that three key metrics may help aspiring shareholders make the best decision.\nFigure 1: AAPL performance on May 18 session.\nKeep an eye on valuation\nForward price-to-earnings, or P/E, is a popular and helpful valuation metric to track.\nThe ratio compares the stock’s current price to the company’s expected current-year or next-year earnings per share, or EPS. It represents how many years’ worth of earnings the market is willing to pay on shares of equity. The lower the figure, the cheaper the stock, and the more appealing of a buy it is.\nApple’s projected current-year EPS is $5.20, suggesting a forward P/E of exactly 24 times at the current stock price of nearly $125. This is the lowest multiple at which Apple stock has been valued compared to 30, 60, 90 days ago and this time last year. See chart below.\nFigure 2: AAPL forward P/E today vs. past.\nIn addition, AAPL’s P/E premium above the S&P 500’s comparable ratio (orange dots above) is also currently about as low as it has been in the past 12 months: 3 turns higher than the broad market today vs. more than 7 turns one quarter ago and around 3.3 turns in May 2020.\nBased on P/E alone, therefore, Apple stock is looking particularly attractive at current levels compared to its own 12-month history and the S&P 500.\nUpdates to EPS growth\nA close cousin to P/E, another metric that could signal a buy of Apple stock is the company’s projected earnings growth trends. Compared to fiscal 2020, current year EPS growth estimates have been increasing progressively this year: 59% year-over-year today vs. 36% three months ago.\n\nSome might choose to look a bit further out in the future – say, five years from now. First, the 50-trading day moving average served as a great buy and sell “advisor” between May 2019 and this time last year. During this period, AAPL clearly moved in trending patterns.\nInvestors would have done well if they had paid close attention to the orange line above and:\n\nheld Apple stock through February 2020;\nsold it once the share price dipped below the 50-day average, that same month;\nbought back once the stock breached the average on the way up, in April 2020;\nheld again until September 2020.\n\nBut after the third quarter of 2020, Apple stock seems to have traded sideways and choppily, except for a brief bullish period between November and January. Now, shares trade very much at the conversion point between the 50-day and the 200-day moving averages. What is remarkable is that if we apply the same approach to the comparative valuation of the company using multiples, we will fail. At least I have not been able to find a single revenue-based multiple that would make it possible to successfully compare Amazon to other companies. In a sense, this is a startup with $73 billion cash.</li><li>The fact that Amazon remains in the acceleration phase does not mean that its capitalization is constantly undervalued. But in this case, based on the patterns between the company's capitalization and the parameters of its revenue, we can conclude that the company is<b>undervalued</b>.</li><li>Comparing Amazon to other companies through the prism of expected EPS growth, it must be admitted that the company is<b>much cheaper</b>than the market.</li><li>DCF model based on average expectations analysts indicate a 30% undervaluation. At the start of the year, a similarmodelindicated a 20% undervaluation.</li><li>When you look at Amazon's revenue forecast for the next decade, you realize that the company will face growth problems. The Apple Maven believes that three key metrics may help aspiring shareholders make the best decision.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ad10237664683dc4e202ae64f0c3d856\" tg-width=\"1007\" tg-height=\"470\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Figure 1: AAPL performance on May 18 session.</span></p>\n<p><b>Keep an eye on valuation</b></p>\n<p>Forward price-to-earnings, or P/E, is a popular and helpful valuation metric to track.</p>\n<p>The ratio compares the stock’s current price to the company’s expected current-year or next-year earnings per share, or EPS. It represents how many years’ worth of earnings the market is willing to pay on shares of equity. The lower the figure, the cheaper the stock, and the more appealing of a buy it is.</p>\n<p>Apple’s projected current-year EPS is $5.20, suggesting a forward P/E of exactly 24 times at the current stock price of nearly $125. This is the lowest multiple at which Apple stock has been valued compared to 30, 60, 90 days ago and this time last year. See chart below.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/51f2c0c8a7b3727ca797e4611a027eb8\" tg-width=\"1200\" tg-height=\"722\"><span>Figure 2: AAPL forward P/E today vs. past.</span></p>\n<p>In addition, AAPL’s P/E premium above the S&amp;P 500’s comparable ratio (orange dots above) is also currently about as low as it has been in the past 12 months: 3 turns higher than the broad market today vs. more than 7 turns one quarter ago and around 3.3 turns in May 2020.</p>\n<p>Based on P/E alone, therefore, Apple stock is looking particularly attractive at current levels compared to its own 12-month history and the S&amp;P 500.</p>\n<p><b>Updates to EPS growth</b></p>\n<p>A close cousin to P/E, another metric that could signal a buy of Apple stock is the company’s projected earnings growth trends. Compared to fiscal 2020, current year EPS growth estimates have been increasing progressively this year: 59% year-over-year today vs. 36% three months ago.</p>\n<p></p>\n<p>Some might choose to look a bit further out in the future – say, five years from now. Even so, growth rates have been trending in the right direction: currently at 13.4% annualized through fiscal 2025 vs. around 11% as of the beginning of 2021.</p>\n<p>Should earnings growth expectations continue to rise, this could be yet another indication that Apple stock might be worth owning at current prices, as the business fundamentals continue to improve.</p>\n<p><b>Will shares trend again?</b></p>\n<p>The third and final metric that might be worth monitoring are the stock’s moving averages. These are indicators that technical analysts (also known as chart readers) like to track to determine things like support, breakout patterns, etc.</p>\n<p>At a high level, the following interpretations of moving averages tend to be consensus among analysts:</p>\n<ul>\n <li>A stock that breaks through the averages on the way up is usually believed to be trending in a bullish manner. During this period, AAPL clearly moved in trending patterns.</p>\n<p>Investors would have done well if they had paid close attention to the orange line above and:</p>\n<ol>\n <li>held Apple stock through February 2020;</li>\n <li>sold it once the share price dipped below the 50-day average, that same month;</li>\n <li>bought back once the stock breached the average on the way up, in April 2020;</li>\n <li>held again until September 2020.</li>\n</ol>\n<p>But after the third quarter of 2020, Apple stock seems to have traded sideways and choppily, except for a brief bullish period between November and January. Now, shares trade very much at the conversion point between the 50-day and the 200-day moving averages. Recently, the company hit&nbsp;100,000 deliveries, a feat that even Elon Musk applauded.</p>\n<p>Currently, NIO stock has an upsized market capitalization of more than $60 billion. However, as we have seen in the sector, investors are ready to pay for sustained growth. Nio has an upscale position in the EV market and makes luxury vehicles with a strong affinity for technology. Moreover, the company is well-capitalized to fund its growth efforts. As of December last year, it had a&nbsp;massive $6.5 billion&nbsp;in its cash till.</p>\n<p>Looking ahead, Nio plans to make its move into the luxury-sedan segment in order to expand its margins further and turn a profit. What’s encouraging, though, is that its gross margins and operating cash flows went positive in the past year, showing that profitability is in sight.</p>\n<p><b>Fisker (FSR)</b></p>\n<p>Fisker is one of the most intriguing names in the EV industry, with a seasoned veteran in the automotive sector at its helm: Henrik Fisker. The company has its all-electric SUV called the Ocean in development. Moreover, it has also entered into a partnership with the famous Taiwanese contracts manufacturer&nbsp;<b>Foxconn</b>&nbsp;for&nbsp;producing its EVs in 2023. Therefore, without making a single dime in revenues, FSR stock has become one of the top speculative electric vehicle stocks in the market.</p>\n<p>There are a few differentiating elements that make Fisker one of the more promising EV companies out there. Firstly, it operates an asset-light model that focuses primarily on its car design and technological abilities. Moreover, the Ocean has an attractive price point with an all-covering lease option. As of today, BLNK stock is up a whopping 306% in the past six months. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, it has done exceptionally well to grow its revenues and asset base. With&nbsp;over 23,000 charging stations&nbsp;across North America, Europe, the Middle East and elsewhere, the company has cemented itself as an industry leader.</p>\n<p>Blink Charging recently reported fourth-quarter results. For Q4, revenues shot up&nbsp;roughly 250%&nbsp;on a year-over-year (YOY) basis. Moreover, it noted that its commercially deployed charging stations&nbsp;grew 51%&nbsp;YOY.</p>\n<p>Earnings performance for the full year was mighty impressive, considering the circumstances. And with the exponential growth in EVs over the next few decades or so, the need for additional charging equipment is evident. However, despite the massive growth runway ahead, BLNK stock is highly overvalued. Investors need to wait for a better entry point in this name.</p>\n<p><b>Chargepoint (CHPT)</b></p>\n<p>EV charging specialist Chargepoint recently completed its merger with shell company Switchback Energy Acquisition. Currently, Chargepoint has a dominating position in the EV charging realm with a huge&nbsp;market share of 73%&nbsp;in North America. Moreover, it plans to&nbsp;increase its revenues&nbsp;from $146.5 million last year to&nbsp;roughly $1 billion&nbsp;by 2024.</p>\n<p>CHPT stock took a hit when it announced its earnings results back in mid-March. Revenues came in slightly higher than estimates and only slightly up from 2019’s $144.5 million in revenue. However, gross margins improved to 22.6%, the brightest spot in the results. Moreover, its cash reserves increased significantly after the merger transaction.</p>\n<p>Chargepoint plans to use this cash as part of its efforts to expand its charging-station footprint. On top of that, the company’s investments in the fast-growing European market could give it an edge over other electric vehicle stocks.</p>\n<p><b>Xpeng (XPEV)</b></p>\n<p>Xpeng is among the three juggernauts of the EV space in China. It is arguably one of the fastest-growing companies in its sphere, with its YOY revenue growth at about 152%. Now, revenues are estimated to reach $2.21 billion in 2021 and $4.29 billion the following year. Moreover, Xpeng is currently building an impressive&nbsp;autonomous driving lidar systems&nbsp;in-house. As a consequence, XPEV stock is up a healthy 57% for the past six months.</p>\n<p>Xpeng’s delivery numbers for its most recent quarter were also very healthy, coming in at&nbsp;nearly 13,000&nbsp;vehicles. Despite chip shortages, the company is on track to deliver some&nbsp;57,500 units&nbsp;for the year. Xpeng has also done an incredible job in separating itself from other electric vehicle stocks in terms of technology; its flagship XPILOT software continues to be upgraded with better&nbsp;capabilities.</p>\n<p>So, with so many exciting developments in the pipeline, XPEV stock is a pick that can’t be missed on the dip.</p>\n<p><b>Li Auto (LI)</b></p>\n<p>The last Chinese EV maker on this list is Li Auto, a company that has in many ways played second fiddle to Xpeng and Nio in the domestic market. However, with its remarkable discipline in costs and margins, along with some interesting features, Li could be the first to break into profitability among its peers. Moreover, its revenues have also increased substantially in the past few quarters. That’s a testament to its solid brand equity.</p>\n<p>The company started off the year strong, with its January deliveries up more than 356% from the prior-year period. Li Auto’s total deliveries&nbsp;increased to 38,976. Looking ahead, Xpeng is also looking at a possible 70,000 deliveries this year, making for YOY growth of&nbsp;approximately 115%&nbsp;according to&nbsp;<i>Seeking Alpha</i>.</p>\n<p>That’s not all, however. Additionally, Li Auto has been investing heavily in its autonomous technology. Its partnership with&nbsp;<b>Nvidia</b>&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<b><u>NVDA</u></b>) could also&nbsp;aid delivery growth. LI stock, however, is as overbought as its peers. That’s why it would be prudent to wait for a dip before investing in this one of the electric vehicle stocks.</p>\n<p><b>Arrival (ARVL)</b></p>\n<p>United Kingdom-based EV startup Arrival has been getting a lot of traction this year among the electric vehicle stocks. The company specializes in EV bus and van production and recently completed its merger with blank-check company CIIG Merger.</p>\n<p>This merger helped Arrival raise&nbsp;$660 million&nbsp;in proceeds. What’s more, although it has entered a crowded space, Arrival’s decentralized manufacturing model is also poised to give it greater flexibility and a quicker path toward commercial production. This makes the company disruptive.</p>\n<p>Arrival expects to begin commercial production in the coming two years. However, one of its customers —<b>United Parcel Service</b>&nbsp;(NYSE:<b><u>UPS</u></b>) — has already ordered&nbsp;10,000 of its EVs, which the company will produce through its “microfactories.”</p>\n<p>All in all, ARVL stock could become a significant player in the EV space based on its current progression and unique production model. Finally, the company has struck a few pertinent contract, delivery and fleet management deals in Europe and North America in anticipation of the Ocean’s commercial release in 2022.\nIt will be interesting to see how things progress, but FSR stock is looking highly attractive at this time.\nBlink Charging (BLNK)\nEV equipment charging provider Blink Charging has been one of the best-performing electric vehicle stocks in the market. As of today, BLNK stock is up a whopping 306% in the past six months. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, it has done exceptionally well to grow its revenues and asset base. With over 23,000 charging stations across North America, Europe, the Middle East and elsewhere, the company has cemented itself as an industry leader.\nBlink Charging recently reported fourth-quarter results. For Q4, revenues shot up roughly 250% on a year-over-year (YOY) basis. Moreover, it noted that its commercially deployed charging stations grew 51% YOY.\nEarnings performance for the full year was mighty impressive, considering the circumstances. And with the exponential growth in EVs over the next few decades or so, the need for additional charging equipment is evident. However, despite the massive growth runway ahead, BLNK stock is highly overvalued. Investors need to wait for a better entry point in this name.\nChargepoint (CHPT)\nEV charging specialist Chargepoint recently completed its merger with shell company Switchback Energy Acquisition. Currently, Chargepoint has a dominating position in the EV charging realm with a huge market share of 73% in North America. Moreover, it plans to increase its revenues from $146.5 million last year to roughly $1 billion by 2024.\nCHPT stock took a hit when it announced its earnings results back in mid-March. Revenues came in slightly higher than estimates and only slightly up from 2019’s $144.5 million in revenue. However, gross margins improved to 22.6%, the brightest spot in the results. Moreover, its cash reserves increased significantly after the merger transaction.\nChargepoint plans to use this cash as part of its efforts to expand its charging-station footprint. On top of that, the company’s investments in the fast-growing European market could give it an edge over other electric vehicle stocks.\nXpeng (XPEV)\nXpeng is among the three juggernauts of the EV space in China. It is arguably one of the fastest-growing companies in its sphere, with its YOY revenue growth at about 152%. Now, revenues are estimated to reach $2.21 billion in 2021 and $4.29 billion the following year. Moreover, Xpeng is currently building an impressive autonomous driving lidar systems in-house. As a consequence, XPEV stock is up a healthy 57% for the past six months.\nXpeng’s delivery numbers for its most recent quarter were also very healthy, coming in at nearly 13,000 vehicles. Despite chip shortages, the company is on track to deliver some 57,500 units for the year. Xpeng has also done an incredible job in separating itself from other electric vehicle stocks in terms of technology; its flagship XPILOT software continues to be upgraded with better capabilities.\nSo, with so many exciting developments in the pipeline, XPEV stock is a pick that can’t be missed on the dip.\nLi Auto (LI)\nThe last Chinese EV maker on this list is Li Auto, a company that has in many ways played second fiddle to Xpeng and Nio in the domestic market. However, with its remarkable discipline in costs and margins, along with some interesting features, Li could be the first to break into profitability among its peers. Moreover, its revenues have also increased substantially in the past few quarters. That’s a testament to its solid brand equity.\nThe company started off the year strong, with its January deliveries up more than 356% from the prior-year period. Li Auto’s total deliveries increased to 38,976. Looking ahead, Xpeng is also looking at a possible 70,000 deliveries this year, making for YOY growth of approximately 115% according to Seeking Alpha.\nThat’s not all, however. Additionally, Li Auto has been investing heavily in its autonomous technology. Its partnership with Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) could also aid delivery growth. LI stock, however, is as overbought as its peers. That’s why it would be prudent to wait for a dip before investing in this one of the electric vehicle stocks.\nArrival (ARVL)\nUnited Kingdom-based EV startup Arrival has been getting a lot of traction this year among the electric vehicle stocks. The company specializes in EV bus and van production and recently completed its merger with blank-check company CIIG Merger.\nThis merger helped Arrival raise $660 million in proceeds. What’s more, although it has entered a crowded space, Arrival’s decentralized manufacturing model is also poised to give it greater flexibility and a quicker path toward commercial production. This makes the company disruptive.\nArrival expects to begin commercial production in the coming two years. However, one of its customers —United Parcel Service (NYSE:UPS) — has already ordered 10,000 of its EVs, which the company will produce through its “microfactories.”\nAll in all, ARVL stock could become a significant player in the EV space based on its current progression and unique production model.
