That, however, is below the grid's all-time high of 74,820 MW set in August 2019.</p>\n<p>In the U.S. Pacific Northwest, power prices at the Mid Columbia hub in Washington state slipped to $123 per megawatt hour for Thursday from $174 for Wednesday. High temperatures in Portland, Oregon, were expected to top 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 Celsius) on Aug. 11-13. The city's normal high is 80 F at this time of year.</p>\n<p>In the Atlantic basin, meanwhile, Tropical Depression Fred was expected to strengthen into a storm as it marches toward the South Florida area on Saturday.</p>\n<p>Data provider Refinitiv said gas output in the U.S. Lower 48 states rose to an average of 92.0 billion cubic feet per day (bcfd) so far in August from 91.6 bcfd in July. That compares with an all-time high of 95.4 bcfd in November 2019.</p>\n<p>With hot weather remaining through late August and liquefied natural gas <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/LNG.AU\">$(LNG.AU)$</a> exports expected to increase as units return from maintenance work, Refinitiv projected average U.S. gas demand, including exports, would rise from 92.3 bcfd this week to 93.0 bcfd next week. The forecast for this week, however, was lower than Refinitiv expected on Wednesday due to less hot weather.</p>\n<p>The amount of gas flowing to U.S. LNG export plants slipped to an average of 10.2 bcfd so far in August, due mostly to what were expected to be short-term reductions at the Cameron and Sabine plants in Louisiana and Freeport in Texas, down from 10.8 bcfd in July and a record 11.5 bcfd in April.</p>\n<p>But with European and Asian gas both trading over $15 per mmBtu, compared with just $4 for the U.S. fuel, analysts said buyers around the world would keep purchasing all the LNG the United States can produce. That, however, is below the grid's all-time high of 74,820 MW set in August 2019.</p>\n<p>In the U.S. Pacific Northwest, power prices at the Mid Columbia hub in Washington state slipped to $123 per megawatt hour for Thursday from $174 for Wednesday. High temperatures in Portland, Oregon, were expected to top 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 Celsius) on Aug. 11-13. The city's normal high is 80 F at this time of year.</p>\n<p>In the Atlantic basin, meanwhile, Tropical Depression Fred was expected to strengthen into a storm as it marches toward the South Florida area on Saturday.</p>\n<p>Data provider Refinitiv said gas output in the U.S. Lower 48 states rose to an average of 92.0 billion cubic feet per day (bcfd) so far in August from 91.6 bcfd in July. That compares with an all-time high of 95.4 bcfd in November 2019.</p>\n<p>With hot weather remaining through late August and liquefied natural gas <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/LNG.AU\">$(LNG.AU)$</a> exports expected to increase as units return from maintenance work, Refinitiv projected average U.S. gas demand, including exports, would rise from 92.3 bcfd this week to 93.0 bcfd next week. Most of the focus is likely to center on Chairman Jerome Powell’s news conference at 2:30 p.m. Here’s what to watch:</p>\n<p><b>Taper timing</b></p>\n<p>Officials are likely to receive a formal staff briefing around when to start paring their monthly purchases of $80 billion in Treasury securities and $40 billion in mortgage securities, and how quickly to reduce, or taper, them.</p>\n<p>The Fed began buying large quantities of the securities in March 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic triggered a near-meltdown in financial markets. With the Fed’s short-term interest rate at zero, the purchases are designed to provide additional stimulus by holding down long-term interest rates.</p>\n<p>Some officials are concerned&nbsp;that a burst of inflation this year from bottlenecks associated with reopening the economy will prove more durable than previously anticipated. These policy makers are eager to start the taper, in part because they and their colleagues have said they aren’t likely to consider raising interest rates from near zero until they are done tapering the asset purchases.</p>\n<p>Another camp thinks recent&nbsp;price pressures will subside&nbsp;and could leave the Fed in the same position that it faced for much of the past decade, in which global forces kept inflation below 2% even with historically low interest rates. They are worried that accelerating plans to wind down the asset purchases could raise questions among investors about the Fed’s commitment to achieving its economic goals.</p>\n<p>Because Mr. Powell has pledged&nbsp;to provide ample notice&nbsp;to financial markets before the Fed starts tapering&nbsp;to avoid catching investors by surprise, the central bank looks unlikely to start the process now or at its next meeting in September. Mr. Powell’s press conference will be heavily scrutinized for clues on how officials judge recent economic progress. In April, he said the Fed was “a long way from” its tapering goals, and he characterized the economy as “still a ways off” from them in June.</p>\n<p><b>Purchase pace</b></p>\n<p>Officials also must consider the pace of any reductions. Some officials have discussed concluding the purchases around October 2022 so they could lift rates soon thereafter if the recovery is stronger or inflation is higher than now anticipated.</p>\n<p>During a prior asset-purchase program that ended in 2014, the Fed shrank its purchases in modest, equal amounts over the course of 10 months. It then waited another 14 months before raising interest rates.</p>\n<p>Another tactical question centers on whether&nbsp;to reduce the pace of Treasurys and mortgage-backed securities equally. Some officials have raised concerns about rising home prices and are pressing to stop purchases of mortgage bonds sooner.</p>\n<p>But Mr. Powell and other officials have poured cold water on those concerns in recent weeks. They have said mortgage buying, by purchasing longer-dated assets, provides a way to more broadly stimulate the economy and isn’t focused squarely on housing markets.</p>\n<p>“If the housing market has you really worried, that’s an argument for just tapering everything sooner and faster,” said William English, a former senior Fed economist who is now a professor at the Yale School of Management.</p>\n<p><b>Inflation outlook</b></p>\n<p>For a third straight month in June,inflation ran hotter&nbsp;than many economists had expected. Most of the focus is likely to center on Chairman Jerome Powell’s news conference at 2:30 p.m. Here’s what to watch:\nTaper timing\nOfficials are likely to receive a formal staff briefing around when to start paring their monthly purchases of $80 billion in Treasury securities and $40 billion in mortgage securities, and how quickly to reduce, or taper, them.\nThe Fed began buying large quantities of the securities in March 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic triggered a near-meltdown in financial markets. With the Fed’s short-term interest rate at zero, the purchases are designed to provide additional stimulus by holding down long-term interest rates.\nSome officials are concerned that a burst of inflation this year from bottlenecks associated with reopening the economy will prove more durable than previously anticipated. These policy makers are eager to start the taper, in part because they and their colleagues have said they aren’t likely to consider raising interest rates from near zero until they are done tapering the asset purchases.\nAnother camp thinks recent price pressures will subside and could leave the Fed in the same position that it faced for much of the past decade, in which global forces kept inflation below 2% even with historically low interest rates. They are worried that accelerating plans to wind down the asset purchases could raise questions among investors about the Fed’s commitment to achieving its economic goals.\nBecause Mr. Powell has pledged to provide ample notice to financial markets before the Fed starts tapering to avoid catching investors by surprise, the central bank looks unlikely to start the process now or at its next meeting in September. They were closer to being bets than investments, which can be fun and rewarding but not exactly safe when the market starts to unravel. As the old adage goes, the higher they fly, the farther they fall. That's especially true when a company can't even come close to justifying its stock price with actual fundamentals. Yes, I'm looking at you, <b>AMC Entertainment</b>.</p>\n<p>Most investors innately know this is the smart-money move to make when the broad market is closer to a major high than a major low. Some investors, however, just need to hear someone else say it. I just did.</p>\n<h3>2. I'm prioritizing cash over equities</h3>\n<p>At first glance, this seems a lot like the aforementioned move -- backing off on my exposure to riskier equities. After all, if I'm selling anything, those proceeds are inherently turned into cash anyway.</p>\n<p>To be clear, however, I'm not merely swapping out my more speculative, vulnerable names for more reliable blue chips. I'm reducing my overall exposure to the market by converting a sizable stake of my holdings to cash.</p>\n<p>It's not always a fully understood (or even believed) facet of investing, but \"safe\" stocks like consumer goods names and utilities companies aren't actually protection from a correction. Shares of consumer packaged goods giant <b>Procter &amp; Gamble</b> fell nearly 24% between last year's February high and March low when the coronavirus began to spread across the world, including within the U.S. Utility name <b>The Southern Company</b> fell 39% during this timeframe. Both recovered -- and then some -- but neither actually offered any true defense from sweeping weakness.</p>\n<p>The point is, during market corrections, there's really no place to hide. You'll just have to let the long-term holdings you're committed to take their lumps on faith they'll bounce back. If you don't have that faith with any particular stock, just replace it with cash until the dust settles.</p>\n<h3>3. I'm adding (a little) gold</h3>\n<p>While most stocks are going to be dragged lower by a market-wide correction, not every sort of holding is a stock. There are also bonds and commodities, which still trade independently of equities. That doesn't preclude them from pulling back if and when the stock market does. But if they do peel back, they're doing so independently of the broad market.</p>\n<p>I'm not bothering with bonds right now. Interest rates are pointlessly low, and with inflation seemingly on the verge of racing out of control, bonds are little more than a coin toss at this time anyway.</p>\n<p>Commodities, however, are a different story. If anything, they've become bigger movers against a rising inflation backdrop and a Federal Reserve that's being increasingly pressured to respond. Should stocks tank, commodities -- already pumped and primed -- may see a swell of demand that drives prices higher. The easiest way to plug into this dynamic is with a simple pick like the <b>SPDR Gold Trust</b>.</p>\n<h3>4. Mostly, I'm doing nothing</h3>\n<p>Finally, and perhaps most importantly, I'm doing nothing about a possible market correction.</p>\n<p>You read that right.</p>\n<p>There are two schools of thought behind the decision to do nothing rather than trying to evade the impact of a correction. The first of these is the simple fact that most of my holdings really are long-haul positions I had (and have) every intention of hanging onto through bear markets. Stocks are still chugging along, but at times, it feels like the only thing keeping the rally going is its momentum. Notice that none of them are particularly complicated moves.\n1. Some officials have raised concerns about rising home prices and are pressing to stop purchases of mortgage bonds sooner.</p>\n<p>But Mr. Powell and other officials have poured cold water on those concerns in recent weeks. They have said mortgage buying, by purchasing longer-dated assets, provides a way to more broadly stimulate the economy and isn’t focused squarely on housing markets.</p>\n<p>“If the housing market has you really worried, that’s an argument for just tapering everything sooner and faster,” said William English, a former senior Fed economist who is now a professor at the Yale School of Management.</p>\n<p><b>Inflation outlook</b></p>\n<p>For a third straight month in June,inflation ran hotter&nbsp;than many economists had expected. (NAVI)</b></p>\n<p><b>Dividend yield:</b>3.2%</p>\n<p>Student loan provider Navient was not exactly a popular stock a year or two ago amid political discussions ofstudent debtforgiveness, which were followed closely by fears of an economic downturn caused by coronavirus disruptions that would upset the payments of young graduates. The financial firm's quarterly dividend of 16 cents, however, went uninterrupted throughout the upheaval, and now NAVI stock is facing an uptrend considering that both the economic and political outlook have improved. Shares are up a huge 150% or so in the last 12 months, and it still offers a dividend that's more than twice the S&amp;P 500, even after that run.</p>\n<p><b>Pfizer Inc. (PFE)</b></p>\n<p><b>Dividend yield:</b>3.6%</p>\n<p>Big Pharma mainstay Pfizer has outperformed the broader stock market slightly in 2021, continuing to ride high on its high-profile success developing an effective coronavirus vaccine. Given the risk posed by variants of the disease, along with a continued push to vaccinate worldwide now that many developed markets have gotten their shots, investors could continue to see a decent tailwind for PFE in the near term. On top of that, don't forget this $240 billion drugmaker remains <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> of the most dominanthealth care companieson the planet, and one of the most reliable dividend stocks out there with an amazing streak of 330 consecutive quarterly dividends paid to shareholders.</p>\n<p><b>Vedanta Ltd. (VEDL)</b></p>\n<p><b>Dividend yield:</b>5.1%</p>\n<p>Vedanta is an India-based industrial conglomerate that operates a diversified natural resources business spanning oil and gas production as well as coal,silverandcoppermining. It also takes the energy sources it extracts and operates power generation facilities, operating an arm that is a major electric utility in the nation. Given that this stock is in an emerging market and not as large as other materials stocks at only about $14 billion, there's a bit more risk here than in other similar stocks. But with a generous dividend and rising revenues, thanks to the global economic recovery, this stock has been a top performer lately with year-to-date returns of more than 60% in 2021.</p>\n<p><b>Vistra Corp. (VST)</b></p>\n<p><b>Dividend yield:</b>3.1%</p>\n<p>A Texas-based utility company, Vistra is an electricity provider -- one of the most stable businesses on Wall Street. But VST also has modest growth potential as it operates in six of the seven wholesale markets where utilities compete for customers, thanks to deregulation. Right now, it has nearly 5 million residential, commercial and industrial connections in about 20 states. Additionally, it announced construction of a 1,600 megawatt-hour battery energy storage system in California, which has captivated investors. Yes, I'm looking at you, <b>AMC Entertainment</b>.</p>\n<p>Most investors innately know this is the smart-money move to make when the broad market is closer to a major high than a major low. Some investors, however, just need to hear someone else say it. I just did.</p>\n<h3>2. I'm prioritizing cash over equities</h3>\n<p>At first glance, this seems a lot like the aforementioned move -- backing off on my exposure to riskier equities. After all, if I'm selling anything, those proceeds are inherently turned into cash anyway.</p>\n<p>To be clear, however, I'm not merely swapping out my more speculative, vulnerable names for more reliable blue chips. I'm reducing my overall exposure to the market by converting a sizable stake of my holdings to cash.</p>\n<p>It's not always a fully understood (or even believed) facet of investing, but \"safe\" stocks like consumer goods names and utilities companies aren't actually protection from a correction. Shares of consumer packaged goods giant <b>Procter &amp; Gamble</b> fell nearly 24% between last year's February high and March low when the coronavirus began to spread across the world, including within the U.S. Utility name <b>The Southern Company</b> fell 39% during this timeframe. Both recovered -- and then some -- but neither actually offered any true defense from sweeping weakness.</p>\n<p>The point is, during market corrections, there's really no place to hide. You'll just have to let the long-term holdings you're committed to take their lumps on faith they'll bounce back. If you don't have that faith with any particular stock, just replace it with cash until the dust settles.</p>\n<h3>3. I'm adding (a little) gold</h3>\n<p>While most stocks are going to be dragged lower by a market-wide correction, not every sort of holding is a stock. There are also bonds and commodities, which still trade independently of equities. That doesn't preclude them from pulling back if and when the stock market does. But if they do peel back, they're doing so independently of the broad market.</p>\n<p>I'm not bothering with bonds right now. Interest rates are pointlessly low, and with inflation seemingly on the verge of racing out of control, bonds are little more than a coin toss at this time anyway.</p>\n<p>Commodities, however, are a different story. If anything, they've become bigger movers against a rising inflation backdrop and a Federal Reserve that's being increasingly pressured to respond. Should stocks tank, commodities -- already pumped and primed -- may see a swell of demand that drives prices higher. The easiest way to plug into this dynamic is with a simple pick like the <b>SPDR Gold Trust</b>.</p>\n<h3>4. Mostly, I'm doing nothing</h3>\n<p>Finally, and perhaps most importantly, I'm doing nothing about a possible market correction.</p>\n<p>You read that right.</p>\n<p>There are two schools of thought behind the decision to do nothing rather than trying to evade the impact of a correction. The first of these is the simple fact that most of my holdings really are long-haul positions I had (and have) every intention of hanging onto through bear markets. One of the greatest upsides of a legitimate buy-and-hold approach is that you don't even have to worry about temporary headwinds.</p>\n<p>The other idea at work here is the fact that guessing the market's next near-term reversal is just darn difficult to do ... so much so that most people don't do it very well. Indeed, the effort to time the stock market's peaks and valleys often does more harm than good, by virtue of getting you out too soon or too late, or getting you back in too soon or too late. The market's going to do what the market's going to do in its own time, and it's<i> not</i> going to telegraph what's around the corner to anyone.
