These results didn't measure up, even given the pandemic, and CEO George Sherman forfeited previously granted performance shares.</p><p>GameStop faced a tough road to reverse this slide and compete with digital offerings. But an investment offered GameStop shareholders some hope that better days were ahead.</p><h2>A major investor enters</h2><p>RC Ventures, led by Ryan Cohen, who founded the successful online company <b>Chewy</b>, made a major investment in GameStop last year.</p><p>With about a 13% stake, RC Ventures has set about to make some changes. This includes Cohen, who took a board seat along with two others in January, recently stepping up as chairman. The company also announced that George Sherman, chief executive officer, was stepping down in July, or possibly earlier if his replacement is found.</p><p>With Cohen's experience, plus his push to hire executives with e-commerce experience from places like Chewy and <b>Amazon</b>, Cohen will attempt to move GameStop further into digital offerings.</p><h2>Hit the pause button</h2><p>GameStop, which has been cleaning up its balance sheet, recently announced that it would pay down debt. It plans to repay the $216 million senior notes, ridding itself of long-term debt. This gives the company some breathing room to execute its plan.</p><p>Cohen is hiring the management team, but it has provided few details on a turnaround plan. While he certainly has e-commerce credentials, and his track record is impressive, it is hard to take a leap of faith right now. There are formidable competitors in the digital download arena, making it tough for GameStop to compete. But I wouldn't stop there. This also helped first-quarter sales get off to a good start, with February's comps increasing by 23%. The average price target is $509.00, which is more than double the $250 reference price established when the stock went public last week.</p>\n<p>The stock dropped 3.7% in morning trading Wednesday, to trade 5.9% below where it closed on its first day of trading on April 14 .</p>\n<p>Horgan said he was bullish on the long-term upside of Coinbase, as it is set to benefit from the growing adoption and acceptance of cryptocurrencies. He said he was more cautious for the short-term, however, as \"the stock faces downside risk from the drawdown in the price of crypto.\"</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ca969a8b8f33073bca39b20d25585859\" tg-width=\"1240\" tg-height=\"584\"><span>FACTSET</span></p>\n<p>Bitcoin was down 1.4% in morning trading Wednesday, and has shed 12.4% since closing at a record $63,434.45 on April 13, according to FactSet data. Despite the recent pullback, bitcoin has still climbed 91.6% year to date and soared 712.7% over the past 12 months. In comparison, the S&amp;P 500 index has gained 10.4% this year and rallied 51.5% over the past year.</p>\n<p>Last week, BTIG analyst Mark Palmer initiated coverage of Coinbase with a buy rating and $500 stock price target, saying he believed the crypto exchange will be the \"primary beneficiary\" of the increased adoption of bitcoin and other digital assets, especially be institutional investors.</p>\n<p>\"We believe [Coinbase] should be regarded as the market leader in a category characterized by rapid and apparently sustainable growth driven by significant changes in consumers' behaviors and their adoption of new technology,\" Palmer wrote in a research note.</p>\n<p>Rosenblatt's Horgan said he believes it's \"reasonable\" to assume the potential for cryptocurrency market value to increase by about fivefold to the approximately $11 trillion market value of gold over the next years. First and foremost, it does not have a commercially viable product right now. The company's battery technology so far has only been sample tested in labs. There remain many unknowns between now and when the company thinks it can have a product ready for use at a commercial scale.</p><p>For example, QuantumScape uses a proprietary separator in its lithium-metal batteries. It expects engineering challenges as it increases the dimensions and volumes of this solid-state separator. Likewise, to achieve the required energy density, single-layer cells need to be stacked in multi-layer format. The company hasn't yet built multi-layer cells of dimensions required for electric vehicles and does not yet have the manufacturing processes to develop such cells in high volumes.</p><p>Further, the company hasn't yet finalized the composition of cathode material to be used in its solid-state batteries and whether it meets electric vehicle requirements or not.
