Laser-based lidar sensors help detect objects ahead of and around the vehicle, and are a key component of many self-driving systems being developed by automakers and suppliers. California-based Luminar in early March announced a deal with the self-driving software subsidiary of Volvo Cars, owned by China's Geely Automobile Holdings , to offer a combination hardware-software system to other automakers. Luminar, founded in 2012, is one of several U.S. lidar manufacturers in the past year to go public via reverse mergers with blank-check companies. SAIC, which is partnered in China with General Motors Co $(GM)$ and Volkswagen AG (VW) , plans to install Luminar's lidar sensors and software next year on its new R brand vehicle line and said it expects to standardize the equipment eventually across all its vehicles in China. GM and VW are developing self-driving technology separately from SAIC - GM through its majority-owned Cruise subsidiary, VW in part with minority-owned Argo AI. SAIC is an investor in Chinese lidar startup RoboSense, as well as other tech startups in the United States and China that are working on various aspects of self-driving vehicles. Initially, SAIC's R line vehicles will have self-driving capability on highways, as well as advanced driver assistance features, the company said. Chair Powell will likely highlight the Fed’s current forward guidance and flexible average inflation targeting (FAIT) for short-term rates in order to push back on current market liftoff pricing,\" Nomura economist Lewis Alexander wrote in a note.\"We expect Powell to reiterate that recent increases in long-term rates likely reflect increased optimism over the recovery, but that persistent signs of market illiquidity bear monitoring.\"

As of December, the Fed signaled it would keep the benchmark Fed funds rate at near-zero levels through at least 2023. While the Fed will likely say rates will remain on hold at least through the next two years, the central bank's updated Summary of Economic Projections this week may show one rate hike as soon as in 2023 as economic conditions improve, some economists have speculated.

\"We do not expect any substantive changes to the Fed’s core policies — including forward guidance and asset purchases — at the March FOMC meeting,\" Alexander added. \"Additional fiscal stimulus and moderating new COVID-19 cases should strengthen the Fed’s near-term outlook. However, we believe a stronger economic outlook — including a slightly higher inflation trajectory — will result in the median 'dot' in 2023 showing one rate hike.\"

Retail sales

One of the most closely watched economic reports this week will be the February retail sales print from the Commerce Department on Tuesday.

Consensus economists are looking for retail sales to have pulled back in February after surging by the most in seven months in January. Specifically, retail sales are expected to have fallen 0.7% month-over-month, following January's 5.3% rise.

\"The February retail sales report likely revealed a deep freeze in consumer spending,\" Bank of America economist Michelle Meyer wrote in a recent note. \"This decline reflects three main factors: 1) payback from the stimulus-induced gain in January; 2) delayed tax refunds; and 3) winter blizzard. The first two factors had a particularly negative impact on the lower income group.\"

January's retail sales report showed a strong rebound in some of the categories hardest hit during the pandemic. Department store sales spiked by nearly 24% month-over-month, bringing these stores' year-over-year sales declines to just 3%. Electronics and appliance stores also saw a nearly 15% rise in sales at the start of the year. Retail sales overall were up 7.4% year-over-year in January, extending a stretch of year-over-year gains that began last summer, as consumers increasingly spent on goods to compensate for a lack of opportunities to spend on services like leisure travel during the pandemic.

Despite the probable February drop in retail sales, the outlook for spending later this year remains strong, as a $1.9 trillion infusion of stimulus percolates through the economy and as mass vaccinations allow more spending to come back online. And consumers have been sitting on historic levels of savings as the pandemic drags out into its second year, with the personal savings rate hovering at an elevated 20.5% in January.

As in-person activities begin to reopen, the degree to which consumers reopen their wallets will depend on how they view their newly amassed capital, according to Bank of America.

“The spending multiplier will mainly depend on whether people view the money saved as ‘wealth’ or ‘deferred income.’ If it is treated like wealth, we would expect a very low payout in the order of four cents on the dollar. If it is seen as deferred income, the payout will be much higher, even if the money is mainly held by high-income households,” Ethan Harris, Bank of America head of global economics research, wrote in a note Friday. “We lean toward the latter. Therefore, we expect the glut of excess savings to help support exceptional growth this year in addition to the tailwinds from fiscal stimulus and an improving virus picture.”

Economic calendar

Monday: Empire Manufacturing, March (14.5 expected, 12.1 in February); However, we believe a stronger economic outlook — including a slightly higher inflation trajectory — will result in the median 'dot' in 2023 showing one rate hike.\"Retail salesOne of the most closely watched economic reports this week will be the February retail sales print from the Commerce Department on Tuesday.Consensus economists are looking for retail sales to have pulled back in February after surging by the most in seven months in January. Specifically, retail sales are expected to have fallen 0.7% month-over-month, following January's 5.3% rise.\"The February retail sales report likely revealed a deep freeze in consumer spending,\" Bank of America economist Michelle Meyer wrote in a recent note. \"This decline reflects three main factors: 1) payback from the stimulus-induced gain in January; 2) delayed tax refunds; and 3) winter blizzard. The first two factors had a particularly negative impact on the lower income group.\"January's retail sales report showed a strong rebound in some of the categories hardest hit during the pandemic. Department store sales spiked by nearly 24% month-over-month, bringing these stores' year-over-year sales declines to just 3%. Electronics and appliance stores also saw a nearly 15% rise in sales at the start of the year. Retail sales overall were up 7.4% year-over-year in January, extending a stretch of year-over-year gains that began last summer, as consumers increasingly spent on goods to compensate for a lack of opportunities to spend on services like leisure travel during the pandemic.Despite the probable February drop in retail sales, the outlook for spending later this year remains strong, as a $1.9 trillion infusion of stimulus percolates through the economy and as mass vaccinations allow more spending to come back online. And consumers have been sitting on historic levels of savings as the pandemic drags out into its second year, with the personal savings rate hovering at an elevated 20.5% in January. As in-person activities begin to reopen, the degree to which consumers reopen their wallets will depend on how they view their newly amassed capital, according to Bank of America.“The spending multiplier will mainly depend on whether people view the money saved as ‘wealth’ or ‘deferred income.’ If it is treated like wealth, we would expect a very low payout in the order of four cents on the dollar. If it is seen as deferred income, the payout will be much higher, even if the money is mainly held by high-income households,” Ethan Harris, Bank of America head of global economics research, wrote in a note Friday. “We lean toward the latter. Therefore, we expect the glut of excess savings to help support exceptional growth this year in addition to the tailwinds from fiscal stimulus and an improving virus picture.”Economic calendarMonday: Empire Manufacturing, March (14.5 expected, 12.1 in February); Total Net TIC Flows, January (-$0.6 billion in December); Net Long-Term TIC Flows, January ($121.0 billion in December)Tuesday: Import price index, month-over-month, February (1.0% expected, 1.4% in January); Import price index excluding petroleum, February (0.4% expected, 0.9% in January); Import price index year-over-year, February (2.6% expected, 0.9% in January); Export price index, month-over-month, February (0.9% expected, 2.5% in January); Export price index, year-over-year, February (2.3% in January); Retail sales advance month-over-month, February (-0.7% expected, 5.3% in January); Retail sales excluding autos and gas, month-over-month, February (-1.3% expected, 6.1% in January); Retail sales control group, February (-1.1% expected, 6.0% in January); Industrial production month-over-month, February (0.4% expected, 0.9% in January); Capacity utilization, February (75.6% in February, 75.6% in January); Manufacturing production, February (0.2% expected, 1.0% in January); Business inventories, January (0.3% expected, 0.6% in December); NAHB Housing Market index, March (84 expected, 84 in February)Wednesday: MBA Mortgage Applications, week ended March 12 (-1.3% during prior week); Building permits, month-over-month, February (-7.2% expected, 10.4% in January); Housing starts, February (-1.0% expected, -6.0% in January); FOMC Rate DecisionThursday: Initial jobless claims, week ended March 13 (703,000 expected, 712,000 during prior week); Continuing claims, week ended March 6 (4.144 million during prior week); Philadelphia Fed Business Outlook Index, March (24.0 expected, 23.1 in February); Leading Index, February (0.3% expected, 0.5% in January)Friday: N/AEarnings calendarMonday: N/ATuesday: Coupa Software (COUP), CrowdStrike (CRWD), Lennar (LEN) after market closeWednesday: Green Thumb Industries (GTII.CN) after market closeThursday: Dollar General (DG) before market open; Nike (NKE), FedEx (FDX), Hims & Hers Health (HIMS) after market closeFriday: N/A","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":304,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":322981458,"gmtCreate":1615767411774,"gmtModify":1703492604712,"author":{"id":"3577510395599113","authorId":"3577510395599113","name":"YOLO_HM","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3e7bd84c2cc55c1d8baa7fd8df102a86","crmLevel":7,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3577510395599113","authorIdStr":"3577510395599113"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"SNDL already up a fair bit. That makes Coupang the largest IPO in the U.S. this year and one of the top 25 biggest listings of all time stateside, by deal size.

The price is also above the company’s most recent expected range of between $32 and $34 a share.

Market leader

Yoo explained that the valuation and IPO price likely rose because Coupang is the only e-commerce company in South Korea that showed a sizeable gain in market share last year. He said its market size rose from 18.1% in 2019 to about 24.6% last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“Most of the other competitors really did not show any type of changes in terms of market share,” he said. Coupang’s rivals include eBay-owned Gmarket, WeMakePrice, Naver Shopping among others.

“The fact is that (Coupang is) becoming the biggest e-commerce business within Korea and 24% market share, I think, it might actually even rise further,” Yoo said. “It is possible that they can actually gain as much as 30%+ over the next few years.” That, he explained, would justify why the company’s IPO price has increased.

Coupang’s regulatory filing showed the company sustained losses over eight quarters through Dec. 31. But a sharp jump in sales last year helped narrow net losses from $770.2 million in 2019 to $567.6 million in 2020

Comparisons with Alibaba, Amazon

The company, whose prominent backers include SoftBank’s Vision Fund and Sequoia Capital, has drawn comparisons with Amazon and Alibaba. Those firms have become tech behemoths after making their public debuts.

But Yoo said that the consumer markets in the U.S. and China are significantly larger than South Korea. So, even if Coupang is able to increase its market share, he said it is unlikely to see the same kind of sales growth the other two companies saw in the last decade.

South Korea’s e-commerce market has an estimated value of $90.1 billion in 2020 with an annual growth rate of 22.3%, according to data analytics firm GlobalData. That is expected to grow at a compounded annual rate of 12% to reach $141.8 billion in 2024.

Spending some of its IPO proceeds on building out a strong distribution platform within Korea could benefit Coupang, according to Yoo.

The e-commerce firm was founded by Korean-American billionaire Bom Suk Kim in 2010 and is headquartered in Seoul. It has more than 100 fulfilment and logistics centers in over 30 cities that provide next-day delivery for orders placed before midnight. Coupang employs 15,000 drivers in South Korea for its deliveries and has branched out into other services such as food and grocery delivery.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Coupang spikes 85% on its first day of trading
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nCoupang spikes 85% on its first day of trading\n
\n\n
\n\n\n\n\n\n

\n\n
\n
Tiger Newspress
\n
2021-03-12 01:27
\n
\n\n\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
Coupang shares opened at $64.8 each on Thursday, about 85% higher than the company’s IPO price.

Investors looking to buy shares of South Korean e-commerce firm Coupang when it goes public in New York should consider if the company has what it takes to be profitable in the future.

That’s the advice Daniel Yoo, head of global asset allocation at Yuanta Securities, Korea, has for clients.

“What you really need to know is whether or not, in the business environment of Korea and e-commerce, can they be able to generate a huge, profitable return on capital,” Yoo said Thursday on CNBC’s “Street Signs Asia.”

Coupang is set to debut on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker “CPNG” later in the day when U.S. markets open.

The company said it had priced 130 million shares at $35 apiece, raising $4.55 billion and valuing the company around $60 billion. That makes Coupang the largest IPO in the U.S. this year and one of the top 25 biggest listings of all time stateside, by deal size. The price is also above the company’s most recent expected range of between $32 and $34 a share.Market leaderYoo explained that the valuation and IPO price likely rose because Coupang is the only e-commerce company in South Korea that showed a sizeable gain in market share last year. He said its market size rose from 18.1% in 2019 to about 24.6% last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.“Most of the other competitors really did not show any type of changes in terms of market share,” he said. Coupang’s rivals include eBay-owned Gmarket, WeMakePrice, Naver Shopping among others.“The fact is that (Coupang is) becoming the biggest e-commerce business within Korea and 24% market share, I think, it might actually even rise further,” Yoo said. “It is possible that they can actually gain as much as 30%+ over the next few years.” That, he explained, would justify why the company’s IPO price has increased.Coupang’s regulatory filing showed the company sustained losses over eight quarters through Dec. 31. This marks a mouth-watering rise in the valuation of the ecommerce company as it was valued at $9 billion in 2019 after Softbank acquired a bigger stake in the business. The Japanese investing bank now holds a 35.1% stake in the company that recorded a loss of $567.6 million in 2020. This is better than a loss of $770.2 million reported a year ago as the pandemic fueled a rapid rise of the e-commerce business. Coupang said its net sales exploded 91% to $11 billion last year. “The fact is that (Coupang is) becoming the biggest e-commerce business within Korea and 24% market share, I think, it might actually even rise further. It is possible that they can actually gain as much as 30%+ over the next few years,” Daniel Yoo, head of global asset allocation at Yuanta Securities, told CNBC. “What you really need to know is whether or not, in the business environment of Korea and e-commerce, can they be able to generate a huge, profitable return on capital.”Shares of the company will make a debut today on NYSE under the ticker “CPNG.”","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":327,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":321427755,"gmtCreate":1615464741877,"gmtModify":1703489401244,"author":{"id":"3577510395599113","authorId":"3577510395599113","name":"YOLO_HM","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3e7bd84c2cc55c1d8baa7fd8df102a86","crmLevel":7,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3577510395599113","authorIdStr":"3577510395599113"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Likely","listText":"Likely","text":"Likely","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/321427755","repostId":"2118603672","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":481,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":321427697,"gmtCreate":1615464715519,"gmtModify":1703489400552,"author":{"id":"3577510395599113","authorId":"3577510395599113","name":"YOLO_HM","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3e7bd84c2cc55c1d8baa7fd8df102a86","crmLevel":7,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3577510395599113","authorIdStr":"3577510395599113"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Me too","listText":"Me too","text":"Me too","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/321427697","repostId":"1149862961","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1149862961","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1615464666,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1149862961?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-03-11 20:11","market":"us","language":"en","title":"GE signs $30 billion deal for aircraft leasing unit, but investors aren’t sold on the stock","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1149862961","media":"cnbc","summary":"General Electric is deep in its turnaround efforts.\nThe industrial conglomerate announced Wednesday ","content":"
\n
General Electric is deep in its turnaround efforts.\nThe industrial conglomerate announced Wednesday it would merge its aircraft leasing unit with Irish company AerCap in a deal worth $30 billion, the ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n","source":"cnbc_highlight","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; With a $30 billion headline, what we’re able to do here is bring cash in … which will allow us to put that toward additional debt reduction.”\nMichael Binger, president of Gradient Investments, applauded the company’s efforts to right the ship.\n“Culp and his predecessor Mr. Flannery have done a great job in their restructuring here. They’ve had four tasks: they’re shedding assets, they’re paying down debt, they’re focusing on their core businesses and they’re getting their underfunded pension fund healthy. I think as GE gets smaller and smaller, the market is going to like it more and more,” Binger told CNBC’s “Trading Nation” on Wednesday.\nOther recent efforts include GE’s sale of its biopharma business to Danaher and its majority divestment of oil company Baker Hughes.\nInvestors did not rally on the AerCap deal, though. GE shares tumbled 5% on Wednesday after the company also released full-year earnings guidance on the soft side.\nBinger, while confident in the restructuring plans, does not see the stock as a buy here, either.\n“Being cash flow positive is good, focusing on core positives is good, and getting down to a targeted EBITDA-to-debt level is good, but after the stock has doubled, we would not be buyers here. We would wait for lower prices before we stepped in,” he said.\nGE’s shares have rallied more than 120% in the past six months, hitting a fresh 52-week high as recently as this week.\nQuint Tatro, president of Joule Financial, is also wary of putting money to work in the stock.\n“General Electric keeps shedding businesses, albeit with good intentions to shore up that balance sheet, but they’re doing it in sectors and environments that are finally turning around. We’re seeing energy turn around. We’re seeing aircrafts coming out of Covid and the quarantine, and people are going to be traveling. So they’re selling business that I think they could be benefiting from,” Tatro said in the same interview.\nHe added that there are far better places for investors to look to instead of GE.\n“I just don’t think it’s worthy of capital here, there are too many other options. Even though it looks cheap, among a variety of metrics, I think investors need to steer clear,” Tatro said.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":207,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":321170987,"gmtCreate":1615417916649,"gmtModify":1703488707485,"author":{"id":"3577510395599113","authorId":"3577510395599113","name":"YOLO_HM","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3e7bd84c2cc55c1d8baa7fd8df102a86","crmLevel":7,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3577510395599113","authorIdStr":"3577510395599113"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Adding this to my tracking list 😊. Company officials have said they are interested in increasing the use of Roblox for things such as virtual concerts and meetings.Who plays Roblox and how?Roblox is accessible on computers, consoles and mobile devices. The company said it had roughly 33 million daily users last year, of whom more than half are under the age of 13. Players in Roblox appear in the form of customizable avatars.Roblox’s Covid boomRoblox has been a huge beneficiary of the Covid-19 shutdowns, which forced kids out of the classroom and away from their friends. With no school to attend and birthday parties canceled, kids turned to Roblox, where they can socialize virtually, navigating theme parks, attending concerts and playing action games while also staying in touch using its popular text chat feature.Daily active users jumped 85% in 2020 to 32.6 million. The number of hours that players spent on the app more than doubled to 30.6 billion. That unexpected and unprecedented growth has created some challenges around its developer community. The company has had to contend with an influx ofspammers and scammers who are out to take advantage of some of the millions of kids who are ready and willing to spend their parents money on Robux.In-game pop-ups lure users with the promise of free Robux if they fill out a survey, only to reroute them to other sites where there’s no Robux and even more spam. In some cases, Roblox developers unknowingly install a malicious plug-in from the game development studio, infecting their own game.“Because of the popularity of our platform, we believe that we are an attractive target for these sorts of attacks,” Roblox said in its prospectus. The company said it’s investing to make sure outside parties can’t access user data and to prevent phishing, spamming and malware as much as possible.Roblox’s second-biggest expense, behind developer fees, is infrastructure, privacy and safety. Those costs jumped 69% last year to $264.2 million.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":218,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":321147850,"gmtCreate":1615417840970,"gmtModify":1703488706450,"author":{"id":"3577510395599113","authorId":"3577510395599113","name":"YOLO_HM","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3e7bd84c2cc55c1d8baa7fd8df102a86","crmLevel":7,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3577510395599113","authorIdStr":"3577510395599113"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Kaixin Auto Group(KXIN)$ still holding on for higher. At its session high, the 30-stock average jumped 650 points to hit an intraday record high. The S&P 500 erased a 1% gain to close 0.5% lower at 3,821.35. The Nasdaq Composite slid 2.4% in volatile trading to 12,609.16 as Apple dropped 4.2% and Tesla fell 5.8%. Alphabet and Netflix both slipped more than 4%.\nThe tech-heavy benchmark closed more than 10% below its Feb.12 closing high, falling into correction territory.\nThe Senate passed a$1.9 trillion economic relief and stimulus bill on Saturday, paving the way for extensions to unemployment benefits, another round of stimulus checks and aid to state and local governments. The Democrat-controlled House is expected to pass the bill later this week. President Joe Biden is expected to sign it into law before unemployment aid programs expire on March 14.\nMeanwhile, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Monday people who've been fully vaccinated against Covid-19can meet safely indoors without masks, further boosting reopening hopes. The positive news boosted stocks banking on a strong economic recovery.\nDisney shares added more than 6% afterCalifornia eased Covid rules, paving the way for Disneyland to reopen on a limited basis in April. American Airlines jumped nearly 5%, while United Airlines popped 7%. Target rose 2.5%.\n\"More stimulus could provide a big lift to the stock market, but it may come with some bumps,\" said Lindsey Bell, chief investment strategist at Ally Invest. \"Runaway inflation worries have been a stumbling block for stocks as of late. Because of this, there could be more market weakness ahead as investors grapple with the short- and long-term effects of stimulus. High-flying stocks like tech and the 'stay at home' stocks may be hit the hardest.\"\nTech stocks remained the biggest losers on Monday, continuing the trend for the last few weeks. High-growth stocks, which were among the best performers last year, are particularly vulnerable as higher rates reduce the value of future cash flows.\nApple has fallen 15% in the past month, while Tesla has dropped 34% in that period. Pandemic bets Zoom Video and Peloton have tumbled 24% and 30% over the past month.\nSentiment got a boost earlier Monday afterhedge fund manager David Tepper said the recent sharp rise in rates is likely overand it's hard to be bearish on stocks right now.\n\"Basically I think rates have temporarily made the most of the move and should be more stable in the next few months, which makes it safer to be in stocks for now,\" Tepper told CNBC's Joe Kernen, who shared the comments on \"Squawk Box.\"\nThe benchmark 10-year yield has risen sharply in recent weeks in anticipation of more stimulus on top of a booming economic recovery. The10-year Treasury yieldrose 4 basis points to 1.6% Monday. The benchmark rate started the calendar year below the 1% mark.\nTepper believes the sell-off in Treasurys that has driven rates higher is likely over as big foreign buyers like Japan are poised to come in. He also said \"bellwether\" stocks like Amazon are starting to look attractive after the pullback. Amazon shares have fallen 11% over the past month.\nThe market rotation has created a big divergence among the major averages. For March, the Dow Industrials, leveraged more to the reopening, is up 2.8%, while the Nasdaq Composite is off by 4.4%. Meanwhile, the broader S&P 500 is up 0.3%.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":98,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":324738992,"gmtCreate":1616029858816,"gmtModify":1703496569917,"author":{"id":"3577510395599113","authorId":"3577510395599113","name":"YOLO_HM","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3e7bd84c2cc55c1d8baa7fd8df102a86","crmLevel":7,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3577510395599113","idStr":"3577510395599113"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Kaixin Auto Group(KXIN)$ didn't sell when it came down to $3.15. The company's COVID-19 vaccine has put Moderna on the map with investors, sending its market cap from less than $10 billion to more than $52 billion. And if its CEO is right about COVID-19 being around forever, the vaccine could deliver recurring income for many years.
\n
However, Moderna's shares have been crashing over the past month despite a strong earnings report. Is March a good time to load up on the stock or should investors wait for more of a dip in price before investing in the company?
\n
\n
A lot depends on the future of COVID-19
\n
Moderna's vaccine for COVID-19, mRNA-1273, has significant sales potential. The company expects the vaccine (which is also the first product Moderna's ever brought to market) will generate a staggering $18.4 billion in revenue in 2021. Those numbers would blow past Moderna's 2020 revenue, which at $803.4 million was already 13 times higher than 2019's top line of $60.2 million.
\n
Whether you think Moderna is a buy or not will likely come down to your outlook for the pandemic. If you anticipate that it will be around for the long term, then Moderna could certainly play a big role in containing the coronavirus. However, there is also the risk is that as more companies get the nod from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for their vaccines, there will also be more options for health officials to choose from, which will chip away at Moderna's market share.
\n
The FDA granted Johnson & Johnson's single-dose vaccine Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) on Feb. 27, making it the third vaccine that will now be available in the U.S., in addition to those from Moderna and Pfizer.AstraZeneca anticipates the FDA will issue its vaccine EUA in April while Novavax projects it will get the green light in May.
\n
But Moderna's vaccine doesn't need to be one of the only two or three options to generate significant sales. Even if it generated half of that $18 billion on a recurring basis (perhaps through booster shots to treat variants of COVID-19), that along with other products in the pipeline could make it a formidable healthcare investment worth hanging on to.
\n
One of the most promising vaccines in its pipeline today is mRNA-1647, which is for cytomegalovirus (CMV). On Feb. 25, when the company released its fourth-quarter earnings for the period ending Dec. 31, 2020, Moderna said its phase 3 study for the drug would begin \"soon.\" But even that vaccine, at its peak, could generate between $2 billion and $5 billion in sales for the company -- a small fraction of what Moderna looks to make from mRNA-1273. The company's COVID-19 vaccine has put Moderna on the map with investors, sending its market cap from less than $10 billion to more than $52 billion. And if its CEO is right about COVID-19 being around forever, the vaccine could deliver recurring income for many years.\nHowever, Moderna's shares have been crashing over the past month despite a strong earnings report. Is March a good time to load up on the stock or should investors wait for more of a dip in price before investing in the company?\nImage source: Getty Images.\nA lot depends on the future of COVID-19\nModerna's vaccine for COVID-19, mRNA-1273, has significant sales potential. The company expects the vaccine (which is also the first product Moderna's ever brought to market) will generate a staggering $18.4 billion in revenue in 2021. Those numbers would blow past Moderna's 2020 revenue, which at $803.4 million was already 13 times higher than 2019's top line of $60.2 million.\nWhether you think Moderna is a buy or not will likely come down to your outlook for the pandemic. If you anticipate that it will be around for the long term, then Moderna could certainly play a big role in containing the coronavirus. However, there is also the risk is that as more companies get the nod from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for their vaccines, there will also be more options for health officials to choose from, which will chip away at Moderna's market share.\nThe FDA granted Johnson & Johnson's single-dose vaccine Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) on Feb. 27, making it the third vaccine that will now be available in the U.S., in addition to those from Moderna and Pfizer.AstraZeneca anticipates the FDA will issue its vaccine EUA in April while Novavax projects it will get the green light in May.\nBut Moderna's vaccine doesn't need to be one of the only two or three options to generate significant sales. Even if it generated half of that $18 billion on a recurring basis (perhaps through booster shots to treat variants of COVID-19), that along with other products in the pipeline could make it a formidable healthcare investment worth hanging on to.\nOne of the most promising vaccines in its pipeline today is mRNA-1647, which is for cytomegalovirus (CMV). The company also has a vaccine for the Zika virus that is still in its early stages and that could be a \"several hundred-million-dollar annual peak sales opportunity.\"\nThe business isn'tentirely dependent on COVID-19, but the outlook for the pandemic definitely factors into the stock's hefty valuation; the worse it is, the more valuable Moderna becomes.\nModerna's stock is cheap(er) -- but is it low enough to buy?\nAlthough Moderna is coming off a strong fourth quarter, where sales came in at $570.7 million (compared to just $14.1 million in the prior-year period), its shares have fallen more than 30% in just the past month while the S&P 500 is down just 1%. However, when looking at its forward price-to-sales (P/S) ratio, there does appear to be some great hidden value here:\nMRNA PS Ratio (Forward) data by YCharts\nModerna compares well against the other COVID-19 stocks mentioned earlier as its future revenue from mRNA-1273 makes its valuation look attractive.\nShould you buy Moderna stock?\nWith a low P/S multiple and a good year ahead, Moderna's stock could potentially make for a solid investment. I wouldn't go so far as to say it is a greatlong-terminvestment, only because there are too many question marks surrounding COVID-19 in the years ahead. The announcement is expected shortly before a press briefing that starts at 4:30pm local time.\nThe city's stock market is already undergoing change at a time when China's tech giants hold growing sway, forcing the index compiler to act on a staid gauge overstuffed with banks and insurers. Hong Kong has become the preferred venue for a wave of Chinese megacaps to sell shares, including standouts like Kuaishou Technology, which surged 161 per cent at its debut in early February after holding the world's largest internet initial public offering since Uber Technologies.\nThe announcement will also come on the heels of a record buying frenzy from mainland traders that propelled the HSI past the 30,000 point level in January for the first time since May 2019, led by heavyweights like Tencent Holdings and Hong Kong Exchanges & Clearing. If the wide-ranging changes are approved, analysts say that the HSI, which in 2020 lagged global peers by the most in decades, could have more room to run.\n\"The valuation of the index will be pushed higher as more new economy stocks are expected to join under the changes,\" said Dickie Wong, executive director of research at Kingston Securities. \"This could also make the index more volatile.\"\nAs part of the proposed changes, Hang Seng Indexes is looking at ensuring that a certain number of benchmark members are classified as Hong Kong firms, which could dilute the influence of some of the largest stocks. The portion of mainland companies in the index by market value was 79 per cent in 2020, according to the December consultation paper.\nOn Friday, Hang Seng Indexes added three companies to its index following its quarterly review, expanding the constituent count to 55 members from 52. The changes are effective March 15. The benchmark index was 1.3 per cent higher as of 10.36am on Monday in Hong Kong, with Meituan and Tencent Holdings among leading gainers.\nLaunched in 1969, the Hang Seng Index started out with 33 constituents, rising to 38 in 2007 when it began to include H-share firms. Last year, Hang Seng Indexes added dual class shares and secondary listings to its index in a major revamp, allowing Chinese giants like Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. into the city's benchmark.\nKey changes under consideration\n• Increase the number of constituents to between 65 and 80, from 52 members\n• Remove minimum listing history requirement for inclusion into index. Currently, there is minimum three-month listing based on market value rank\n• Lower the weighting cap of individual constituents, now at 10 per cent, and align the weighting cap of secondary-listed members to 8 per cent\n• Select constituents by industry group to balance representation, Currently, among 12 industries, telecoms, financials and IT cover 80 per cent in terms of market capitalisation as of December 2020\n• Maintain a certain number of constituents classified as Hong Kong companies.
