on Wednesday. This follows just a pair of IPOs by SPACs last week and compares to more than 20 deals a week during most of the year.</p>\n<p>Worse, according to Bloomberg data, public SPAC offerings are poised for their slowest two-week stretch since the end of 2020.&nbsp; While a reversal remains possible as we get further from Easter weekend,<b>investors have been signaling a growing distaste for these deals.</b>More than 100 or about a third of SPACs that went public this year are trading below their IPO price as investors&nbsp;wait&nbsp;for news of an acquisition. In all, 2021’s SPACs are trading 0.8% above their debut levels, compared with an average 6.0% gain by the year’s traditional IPOs.</p>\n<p>The trouble in SPACs comes alongside other signs of&nbsp;weakness&nbsp;in the global IPO market even as the S&amp;P 500 continues to trade near record highs. From Tiger Trade, EST 09:30</span></p><p>U.S. stock index futures rose on Monday, indicating new record highs at the opening bell for the Dow and S&amp;P 500.</p><p>Dow futures gained 80 points, or 0.24%. S&amp;P 500 futures advanced 0.05%, while Nasdaq 100 futures were up 0.1%.</p><p>Stocks that will benefit most from a swift economic comeback from the pandemic led the gains in premarket trading. American Airlines and United Airlines shares were both up more than 2% in premarket trading. Boeing, Gap and various energy stocks were also higher.</p><p>The U.S. 10-year Treasury hit its highest level in more than a year on Friday. The benchmark Treasury note rate reached 1.642%, its highest level since February 2020.</p><p>The10-year Treasury yieldwas trading flat to slightly lower early Monday.</p><p>“Investors will have to continually grapple with the anxiety about economic overheating and Fed tightening that has gripped markets in recent weeks,” wrote David Kostin, Goldman’s chief U.S. equity strategist, in a note. “We believe equity valuations should be able to digest 10-year yields of roughly 2% without much difficulty.”</p><p>Stocks rose last week with the Dow Jones Industrial Average rising 4% and the S&amp;P 500 gaining 2.6%. The S&amp;P 500 and the Dow&nbsp;both closed at record highs Friday.</p><p>The Nasdaq Composite advanced 3% last week, despite a sell-off on Friday spurred by rising interest rates. The jump in bond yields has challenged growth stocks in recent weeks and sent investors into cyclical pockets of the market. The Nasdaq is up less than 1% this month, while the Dow and S&amp;P are up 6% and 3.5%, respectively.</p><p>The small-cap benchmark Russell 2000 surged more than 7% last week as investors rotated into smaller stocks that benefit from a sharp economic comeback.</p><p>Last week, investors cheered the $1.9 trillion stimulus package that President Joe Biden signed into law. The IRS started processing $1,400 direct payments on Friday and checks started hitting bank accounts over the weekend. The bill will also put nearly $20 billion into Covid-19 vaccinations and $350 billion into state, local and tribal government relief.</p><p>Investors will be gearing up for Wednesdaywhen the Federal Reserve will deliver its decision on interest rates. The bond market in the coming week will likely take its cues from the Fed.</p><p>The central bank is expected to acknowledge much better growth in the economy. Bond pros are also watching to see whether Fed officials will tweak their interest rate outlook, which now does not include any rate hikes through 2023.</p><p>On the vaccine front, Biden announced last week that he would&nbsp;direct states to make all adults eligible&nbsp;for the vaccine by May 1. The SPDR S&amp;P Bank (ticker: KBE), Industrial Select Sector SPDR (XLI) and Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) exchange-traded funds are all up double digits year to date, dwarfing the S&amp;P 500’s roughly 6% gain and the Nasdaq Composite’s 3.3% advance.</p>\n<p>Tons of cyclicals now look fairly overextended. Caterpillar (CAT), for example, is up 27% year to date. The average analyst price target is 6% below its current trading price. Fortunately, there are some out there trading at attractive valuations with earnings momentum on their side.</p>\n<p>Strategists at Citigroup compiled a list on Monday of stocks with tolerable valuations, a few of which are cyclical in nature. Citi looked at the PEG ratio, or price/earnings to growth, which divides the forward earnings multiple by the expected earnings growth rate. It tells how justified a stock’s valuation is by showing the gap between the multiple and earnings growth. The slimmer the gap, the cheaper the stock. Citi looked at large capitalization stocks—those with market caps above $10 billion--and looked for those with the 25 lowest PEG ratios.</p>\n<p>When economic demand rises robustly, so do manufacturing projects, increasing demand for industrial metals used to build machinery. That’s propelled shares of Freeport McMoRan (FCX), the $50 billion by market capitalization metal miner. The company is worth a quarter more now than it was at the beginning of 2021. But the stock still trades at a PEG ratio of about 0.3, based on an expected compound annual growth rate of earnings for the next 3 years. By comparison, the average stock on the S&amp;P 500 trades at a PEG ratio of 1.3. Freeport McMoRan shares could have plenty of runway ahead.</p>\n<p>Auto makers and other manufacturers need steel to build more products and machines when demand firms up. That’s good news for steelmaker Nucor (NUE), which has seen its currently $20 billion market cap rise by about a third this year. It trades at a 0.9 PEG ratio.</p>\n<p>Shares of General Motors (GM) are up 45% but still trade at a PEG ratio around 1.3, in line with that of the broader market. The stock looks a little less attractive than the others on the list and earnings are only expected to compound in the high single digits over the next 3 years. Still, earnings in 2022 are expected to grow 19% over 2021, according to analysts polled by FactSet. The stock could therefore enjoy plenty of momentum in the near-term. People purchase more cars when they have more discretionary spending capacity.</p>\n<p>Hotel chain Marriott International (MAR) is up more than 20% this year. It trades at a PEG ratio of 0.4. As the virus risk associated with hotels fades, people may be more comfortable visiting them. The challenge was to limit the severity and duration of the fallout to avoid longer-run damage,” he said.</p>\n<p>Powell and his colleagues engineered a rapid response to the crisis, based on the lesson learned from slow recovery to the Great Recession of 2008-2009 that swift action might have been better.</p>\n<p>The central bank quickly slashed its policy interest rate to zero and launched an open-ended asset purchase program known as quantitative easing.</p>\n<p>With economists penciling in strong growth for 2021 and more Americans getting vaccinated every day, financial markets are wondering how long Fed support will last.</p>\n<p>In the op-ed, Powell said the situation “is much improved.”</p>\n<p>“But the recovery is far from complete, so at the Fed we will continue to provide the economy with the support that it needs for as long as it takes,” Powell said.</p>\n<p>“I truly believe that we will emerge from this crisis stronger and better, as we have done so often before,” he said.</p>\n<p>On Wednesday, the Fed recommitted to its easy money policy stance at its latest policy meeting despite a forecast for stronger economic growth and higher inflation this year.</p>\n<p>The Fed chairman did not mention the outlook for inflation in his Friday article .
