The amount of unearned fees more than doubled to $946 million, meaning more growth is on the way.</p><p>The stock, however, remained on the downward trajectory it has held for three months. It opened for trade May 19 at about $137/share. That’s still a market cap of around $85 billion, on what should be sales of $3.4 billion for the year. But it’s well down from a February high of $219.94.</p><p><b>It Was Too High</b></p><p>I’m high on the ABNB business model. I’ve used the service. I’ve been satisfied. But when I’ve looked at the numbers, soon afterits December IPO&nbsp;and againin April, I haven’t seen a buying opportunity.</p><p>Back in January, for instance, ABNB stock was worth even more than<b>Booking.Com</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>BKNG</u></b>), the longtime leader in travel reservations. That has since reversed, but Booking is still a better business. It had 2020 revenue of $6.8 billion, it should benefit from a return to travel, and it has a broader product line.</p><p>The travel reservation business looks like a two-horse race, with AirBnB stock and Booking stock miles ahead of rival<b>Expedia</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>EXPE</u></b>). But look again. Expedia’s revenues were higher than AirBnB’s last year. It has its own home rental arm, called Vrbo, which istaking market sharefrom AirBnB. But EXPE’s value is still under $25 billion. To me that makes it a better value.</p><p><b>Old Problems Return</b></p><p>Booking and Expedia grew up within the old travel ecosystem of planes, hotels, and rental cars. The argument of AirBnB bulls is that this is broken, disrupted by “the people” getting into the business.That’s still the argument.&nbsp;The 31 analysts at Tipranks covering AirBnB stock still have anaverage price target of $181.28.</p><p>But the return of travel also brought back AirBnB’s pre-pandemic problems. Guerilla action is growing against“illegal”AirBnBs let in violation of city ordinances. &nbsp;Tenant groups argue they’re being priced out by one-night rentals and the problem of homelessness is increasing.</p><p>Cities around the world, especially in popular European destinations, aretightening rulesagainst AirBnB. &nbsp;The pressure is likely to increase this year. Many AirBnBs reverted to rental housing during the pandemic, for regular income. Reopening means units will go back to being offered as nightly rentals, stranding the new tenants.</p><p>Small wonder that some traders havelost faithin the AirBnB model, even while CEO Brian Chesky says he’s ready to“conquer a reopened world.”</p><p>But how much of that growth will come from disruption and how much from just cutting costs? Chesky is moving workers out of San Francisco andinto Atlanta, where the rents are lower and the citycelebrates tech tenantsinstead of vilifying them. That’s a hit for profits. The underlying business problems will remain.</p><p><b>ABNB Stock: The Bottom Line</b></p><p>AirBnB should be worth a premium price. It should continue to grow.</p><p>But the premium is too high right now. If I were buying a travel stock it would be Expedia, which trades at about 6 times sales. AirBnB is trading at closer to 20 times sales.</p><p>AirBnB does havemarketing advantages over its rivals. Its brand name is dominant when you’re looking to rent a house for a day or a week. But how much of the travel market will that represent? AMD's shares were up 4.5% as of 11:30 a.m. EDT.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/368e9bc79febd0164dab4a88ffd13c42\" tg-width=\"840\" tg-height=\"470\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/cf04377bf945cfdaa9a52157bb5560f7\" tg-width=\"840\" tg-height=\"470\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p><p></p><p><b>So what</b></p><p>Intel, if you haven't heard, actually&nbsp;beat&nbsp;on its Q1 earnings. Despite sales declining 1% year over year, the company managed to report a pro forma profit of $1.39 per share, which was ahead of analyst expectations.</p><p>Regardless, Intel reported a steep 540 basis point decline in its gross margin to 55.2%, and it saw its operating margin cut nearly in half as the company spent heavily to race to catch up to its rivals in advanced computer chips. Analysts at Citigroup commented yesterday that Intel stock appears to be close to its peak valuation and is likely to decline as investors acclimate to the new environment in which Intel is losing, not gaining, market share.</p><p>And the reason this is good news for&nbsp;AMD&nbsp;is that, according to Citi at least, it's AMD that's taking that market share away from Intel.</p><p><b>Now what</b></p><p>So what's an investor to do with all this information?</p><p>At a valuation of just 13.6 times trailing earnings, Intel stock certainly looks like a relative bargain when compared with AMD stock, which trades at 38.4 times earnings. But AMD has acash-rich balance sheet, versus Intel that's carrying $13.5 billion in net debt. As Goldman puts it, \"expiration-related activity is likely to have more of an impact if the open interest represents a significant percentage of the stock’s volume.\"Finally, for what it's worth, this morning our friends at SpotGamma write that this has been a rather strange OPEX cycle, \"with a consistent almost mechanical bid pushing markets higher. We’ve not seen the Call Wall “breached” this many times before, but there are other aberrations that we’ve mentioned in previous notes – like net put sales. We’ve got some theories on this we are posting in a longer form piece.\"According to SG, because implied volatility has now compressed (ie VIX at new lows) there is now more potential for “long term” volatility. Recall how as of late any sharp, violent drop in markets was bought so quickly (see chart below).These bursts lower coincided with record VIX spikes, but a reflective snap-back bid would bring a market recovery of equal force as the VIX  (i.e. implied volatility) reversed.And one other curious observation from SpotGamma:When implied volatility is very high, its very sensitive to market moves and also signaling that markets are expecting more large moves ahead. As soon as markets would pause or catch a support level, that implied volatility would quickly reverse lower. We often think of this analogy that if a shark stops swimming, it sinks ( partially true!). If the market stops dropping then Implied volatility sinks.With this, as we often talk about, lower implied volatility (ie lower VIX) signals market makers have to buy back short hedges which fuels rallies. Semiconductor maker Nvidia climbed 3%, Tesla rose 8.6%.\nThe Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 68.13 points, 0.2%, to close at 33,677.27 after dropping more than 150 points earlier in the session.\nReopening trades came under pressure Tuesday morning after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said it’s recommending a pause in the Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccine after reported cases of blood clotting.\nThere have been six reported cases of a rare and severe type of blood clot after receiving the J&J vaccine, the FDA said. And, via share repurchases, they’re buying with other peoples’ money — their corporate cash. Companies historically have been wrong more than right in timing stock buybacks.</p>\n<p>Earlier this year I wrote about insiders’ aggressive selling from their own accounts, and this has become even more pronounced in the weeks since. Winston Chua, a data analyst at EPFR, a division of Informa Financial Intelligence, reports that insider selling in the first quarter of this year was at a 14-year high.</p>\n<p>At the same time that insider selling has jumped, companies have also accelerated the pace of repurchasing their shares. The total of stock buybacks in the first quarter, according to Chua, was the most in seven quarters.</p>\n<p>To appreciate how bad companies are at timing their share repurchases, take a look at the chart below. It plots the S&amp;P 500’sSPX,+0.77%so-called buyback yield: total repurchases of S&amp;P 500 companies in a given quarter as a percentage of the S&amp;P 500’s market capitalization. Notice that the lowest buyback yields over the past 15 years occurred at the two most significant bear market bottoms — March 2009 and March 2020.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2d391d714df3653fdc975b81b3575c4a\" tg-width=\"620\" tg-height=\"418\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>If companies had good market-timing skills in deciding when to repurchase shares, of course, the buyback yield would have been highest at those bottoms, not lowest. Just the reverse would have been the case at the 2007 bull market high: If companies were good market timers, the buyback yield would have been lowest then, rather than at one of its highest levels in decades.</p>\n<p>It’s probably not an accident that insider selling and share repurchases are trending higher at the same time. Rob Arnott, founder of Research Affiliates, explains why:</p>\n<p>“Say you’re a CEO, and you have 10 million shares of stock options [that you want to redeem],” he told me a couple of months ago. “You’ll want to mitigate market impact by doing a stock buyback at the same time. So, noisily announce a 10 million share stock buyback for a certain date… Issue yourself 10 million shares of new stock at about the same time and promptly sell it. Change in the float of the stock? None. Perception in the marketplace? ‘They did another big buyback! Applause!’”</p>\n<p>Arnott was speaking hypothetically, but if you have any doubt that the situation he describes is real, consider a study published in the November 2018 issue of Review of Financial Studies entitled “Strategic News Releases in Equity Vesting Months.” Its authors are Alex Edmans and Moqi Groen-Xu of the London Business School; Luis Gonclaves-Pinto of the Chinese University of Hong Kong; and Yanbo Wang of Sungkyunkwan University.</p>\n<p>The researchers found strong evidence that the average CEO in the U.S. manipulates the flow of news about his company in his “vesting” months, increasing the frequency of positive news and delaying or killing neutral or negative stories. These vesting months represent the first opportunity the CEO has to sell shares or exercise options granted him in prior years. One way in which executives manipulate this flow of positive news is to strategically time the announcement of a new share repurchase program. The authors conclude that the CEO’s manipulation “generates a temporary increase in stock prices and market liquidity, which the CEO exploits by cashing out shortly afterwards.”</p>\n<p>This research also helps us to understand why the stock market remains so strong despite aggressive insider selling from their own accounts: The increase in share repurchases softens the bearish impact of that selling. Its reach and operating practices were such that Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan said that when LTCM failed, “he had never seen anything in his lifetime that compared to the terror” he felt. LTCM was deemed “too big to fail,” and he engineered a bailout by 14 major U.S. financial institutions.</p>\n<p>Exactly a decade later, too much leverage by some of those very institutions, and the bursting of a U.S. real estate bubble, led to the near collapse of the U.S. financial system. Once again, big banks were deemed too big to fail and taxpayers came to the rescue.</p>\n<p>The trend? Every 10 years or so, and they all look different.&nbsp;Are we in the early stages of a new crisis now, with the blowup at the family office Archegos Capital Management LP?</p>\n<p>A family office, for the uninitiated, is a private wealth management vehicle for the ultra-wealthy. Here’s what I mean by ultra-wealthy: Consulting firm EY estimates there are some 10,000 family offices globally, but manage, says a separate estimate by market research firm Campden Research, nearly $6 trillion. That $6 trillion is likely far higher now given that it’s based on 2019 data.</p>\n<p><b>Unregulated money managers</b></p>\n<p>Here’s the potential danger. Family offices generally aren’t regulated. The 1940 Investment Advisers Act says firms with 15 clients or fewer don’t have to register with the Securities and Exchange Commission. What this means is that trillions of dollars are in play and no one can really say who’s running the money, what it’s invested in, how much leverage is being used, and what kind of counterparty risk may exist. (Counterparty risk is the probability that one party involved in a financial transaction could default on a contractual obligation to someone else.)</p>\n<p>This appears to be the case with Archegos. The firm bet heavily on certain Chinese stocks, including e-commerce player&nbsp;Vipshop Holdings&nbsp;Ltd.VIPS,-1.19%,U.S.-listed Chinese tutoring company&nbsp;GSX Techedu&nbsp;Inc.GSX,-10.63%and U.S. media companiesViacomCBS&nbsp;Inc.VIAC,-3.90%and&nbsp;Discovery&nbsp;Inc.DISCA,-3.86%,among others. Share prices have tumbled lately, sparking large sales — some $30 billion — by Archegos.</p>\n<p>The problem is that only about a third of that, or $10 billion, was its own money. We now know that Archegos worked with some of the biggest names on Wall Street, including&nbsp;Credit Suisse Group AGCS,+1.59%,UBS Group AGUBS,+1.01%,Goldman Sachs Group Inc.GS,-1.25%,&nbsp;Morgan StanleyMS,-0.28%,Deutsche Bank AGDB,+0.74%and Nomura Holdings Inc.&nbsp;NMR,+1.87%.</p>\n<p>But since family offices are largely allowed to operate unregulated, who’s to say how much money is really involved here and what the extent of market risk is? My colleague Mark DeCambre&nbsp;reported last week that Archegos’ true exposures to bad trades could actuallybe closer to $100 billion.</p>\n<p><b>Danger of counterparty risk</b></p>\n<p>This is where counterparty risk comes in. As Archegos’ bets went south, the above banks — looking at losses of their own — hit the firm with margin calls. Deutsche quickly dumped about $4 billion in holdings, while Goldman and Morgan Stanley are also said to have unwound their positions, perhaps limiting their downside.</p>\n<p>So is this a financial crisis? It doesn’t appear to be. Even so, the Securities and Exchange Commission has opened a preliminary investigation into Archegos and its founder, Bill Hwang.</p>\n<p>One peer, Tom Lee, the research chief of Fundstrat Global Advisors, calls Hwang one of the “top 10 of the best investment minds” he knows.</p>\n<p>But federal regulators may have a lesser opinion. In 2012, Hwang’s former hedge fund, Tiger Asia Management, pleaded guilty and paid more than $60 million in penalties after it was accused of trading on illegal tips about Chinese banks. The SEC banned Hwang from managing money on behalf of clients — essentially booting him from the hedge fund industry. So Hwang opened Archegos, and again, family offices aren’t generally aren’t regulated.</p>\n<p><b>Yellen on the case</b></p>\n<p>This issue is on Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen’s radar. She said last week that greater oversight of these private corners of the financial industry is needed. The Financial Stability Oversight Council (FSOC), which she oversees, has revived a task force to help agencies better “share data, identify risks and work to strengthen our financial system.”</p>\n<p>Most financial crises end up with American taxpayers getting stuck with the tab. Gains belong to the risk-takers. But losses — they belong to us. To paraphrase Abe Lincoln, family offices — a multi-trillion dollar industry largely allowed to operate in the shadows in a global financial system that is more intertwined than ever — are of the super-wealthy, by the super-wealthy and for the super-wealthy. And no one else.</p>\n<p>The Archegos collapse may or may not be the beginning of yet another financial crisis. This will serve as a massive tailwind for ChargePoint Holdings.</p><p>ChargePoint Holdings is an EV charging network company that has been around since 2007. It has recently gone public. The recent tech and EV selloff pulled share prices down, but the long-term picture remains bright. And Biden’s commitment to accelerate the EV infrastructure buildout serves as an immediate catalyst.</p><p>ChargePoint has been building out the EV infrastructure charging network since 2007. Thus, it is a pioneer in the EV space. The other pioneering American name in the space,<b>Tesla</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>TSLA</u></b>), didn’t release its first vehicle until 2008.</p><p>ChargePoint currently boasts a network of over 132,000 places to charge vehicles in North America and Europe. Additionally, it has 7X more market share than its next closest competitor in networked level 2 charging.</p><p>CHPT stock only began trading on the<b>New York Stock Exchange</b>on March 1, following its initial public offering (IPO) with Switchback Energy. 2020 fiscal year revenuesincreased to $146.5 million, from $144.5 million in 2019. The company is still experiencing losses and will continue to do so. It remains a long-term play, but the short-term catalyst is there.</p><p><b>Cleveland-Cliffs (CLF)</b></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d58f5a192f0b60a4852a611a526745a5\" tg-width=\"300\" tg-height=\"169\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">Source: IgorGolovniov / Shutterstock.com</p><p>My next pick on this list of infrastructure stocks is CLF. The proposed infrastructure buildout is going to require lots of steel. Cleveland-Cliffs mines ore and manufactures just about every kind of steel imaginable. Biden’s plan calls for $650 billion in spending on infrastructure at home and $621 billion of spending on transportation infrastructure. Therefore, investors can easily understand the opportunity for a leading steelmaker like Cleveland-Cliffs.</p><p>Investors already keen to make a play on steel manufacturing may be considering a few other names, including<b>Nucor</b>(NYSE:<b><u>NUE</u></b>) and<b>ArcelorMittal</b>(NYSE:<b><u>MT</u></b>). However, there’s good reason to consider Cleveland-Cliffs over either of them. Firstly, Nucor is already above its pre-pandemic price, and it looks like investors have already rotated into it as a cyclical play. All of its growth seems to be priced into current share prices.</p><p>Cleveland-Cliffs acquired substantially all of ArcelorMittal’s U.S. operations back in December. CLF stock has been trending upward since, and it looks like it should continue on the infrastructure plan news.</p><p>CLF’s stock appreciation has outpaced its peersover the past three years. The company also acquired AK steel in 2020. The acquisitions have transformed Cleveland-Cliffs into the largest flat-rolled steel manufacturer in North America.</p><p><b>Vulcan Materials (VMC)</b></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/39932fac423a7a708494a061632593d1\" tg-width=\"300\" tg-height=\"169\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">Source: madamF / Shutterstock.com</p><p>Vulcan Materials is the United States’ largest producer of construction aggregates. This includes crushed stone, sand, gravel, asphalt and concrete. Under Biden’s plan, $115 billion has been earmarked for improving highways, bridges and roads.</p><p>Vulcanoperations serve 19 of the 25fastest growing U.S. markets. Moreover, the company operates across what is essentially the southern half of the continental U.S. Growth in this geography’s population, household and employment is projected to far outpace the areas Vulcan Materials doesn’t operate in. Therefore, Vulcan Materials has a strong ability to capture a higher portion of that $115 billion in spending.</p><p>For the full year 2020, Vulcan Materials recorded$4.86 billion in revenue, a record EBITDA of $1.324 billion and earnings of $585 million. The company focused on improved efficiency during the pandemic year. Revenues declined by 1%, yet profits increased 2%.</p><p>Vulcan Materials CEO Tom Hill noted gains in construction employment as a positive catalyst of late for the company. This infrastructure plan only strengthens the case for investing in VMC stock.</p><p><b>Brookfield Infrastructure Partners (BIP)</b></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/259558d5e4a485a8520b52e65a9ac51e\" tg-width=\"300\" tg-height=\"169\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">Source: Shutterstock</p><p>Brookfield Infrastructure Partners manages a portfolio of infrastructure assets, making it a natural pick for this list of infrastructure stocks. The company’s holdings include assets across utilities, transport, energy and data infrastructure. Therefore, the company has wide exposure to many of the sectors Biden’s plan intends to address.</p><p>One thing that I appreciate about Brookfield Infrastructure Partners is that the company sets out clear expectations for potential investors. It states that its objective is “to generate a long-term return of 12-15% on equity and provide sustainable distributionsfor unitholders while targeting annual distribution growth of 5-9%.”</p><p>The company has grown over the past year on a net income basis. Net income in 2020 reached $394 million, up from $233 million in the year prior. Perhaps as important, the company saw a large increase in revenues during 2020. Brookfield Infrastructure Partners recorded$8.885 billion in 2020 revenues. In 2019, that figure was a much more modest $6.597 billion.</p><p>So the company itself looks to be in strong position, regardless of the positive catalyst provided by President Biden’s American Jobs Plan. The company israted overweightby Wall Street analysts, and its Q4 earnings-per-share (EPS) earnings beat along with all of the other positives make it a strong play right now.</p><p><b>American Tower REIT (AMT)</b></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d7ceef64c5fa59dffdd1dd6a453f1e43\" tg-width=\"300\" tg-height=\"169\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">Source: Pavel Kapysh / Shutterstock.com</p><p>American Tower REIT (real estate investment trust) is another stock that Wall Street is fond of at present.Eight analysts rate it a buy, while only one rates it a hold. The company builds and operates cell phone towers across the globe. I like this stock as a broader play on the buildout of 5G in the United States. It just makes sense to invest in it as a play on a different narrative in 5G than network competition. AMT stock recently dropped below $200 and has rebounded sharply in the past three weeks to around $240 per share.</p><p>American Tower REIT released Q4 and full-year earnings back on Feb. 25. Althoughrevenue, net income and EBITDA all increasedfor the full year, AMT stock pitched downward for the next week and a half. Perhaps this was attributable to the fact that it missed quarterly EPS expectations. In any case, AMT shares are up again and more than retraced the prior losses.</p><p>Biden’s plan calls for a $100 billion investment into high-speed broadband. Although his plan hasn’t been enacted as law, broadband will certainly be less contentious than some green initiatives. American Tower REIT should benefit along with other infrastructure stocks.</p><p><b>Union Pacific (UNP)</b></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ccda0ccf43b233e8fd63d9138bde861f\" tg-width=\"300\" tg-height=\"169\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">Source: Michael Rosebrock / Shutterstock.com</p><p>Union Pacific is a company and a stock with a few overarching catalysts currently. Firstly, Union Pacific is a strong economic reopening play. Freight is a highly cyclical portion of the economy, and investors are rotating in. Some investors may worry that gains are already priced in. It doesn’t appear so. UNP stock is still below analyst target prices by roughly $10.</p><p>That tangent aside, let’s get back to the overarching catalysts in Union Pacific’s favor. Secondly,Biden’s Jobs for America Plan includes $80 billion of investment toward passenger and freight rail. Both scenarios bode well for Union Pacific and owners of its stock.</p><p>Union Pacific also has a few strong metrics backing it as a business. Its net margin, return on equity and return on assets areall above the 90th percentileof peers in the transportation industry. Further, Union Pacific is broadly value-creating with a return on capital that exceeds its cost of capital.</p><p><b>Deere &amp; Co. (DE)</b></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a577460eb08f8218ccf86b5929ad86c2\" tg-width=\"300\" tg-height=\"169\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">Source: Shutterstock</p><p>Last on this list of infrastructure stocks is Deere &amp; Co. stock. DE stock was flat through all of 2018 and 2019. Shares pretty much hovered around $155, give or take five or 10 bucks. However, DE stock has shot skyward over the past year. Shares are up 233% from the pandemic trough and a still very respectable 127% from pre-pandemic prices.</p><p>Some readers will wonder if that means that most of the getting has been gotten. Analyst target prices indicate there’s room left for growth on average. Optimistic estimates suggest there’s another $50-60 until DE shares max out.</p><p>Although many readers will associate Deere &amp; Co. with lawn mowers and smaller tractors, the company also manufactures a lot of construction equipment. Therefore, investors can easily understand the opportunity for a leading steelmaker like Cleveland-Cliffs.Investors already keen to make a play on steel manufacturing may be considering a few other names, includingNucor(NYSE:NUE) andArcelorMittal(NYSE:MT). However, there’s good reason to consider Cleveland-Cliffs over either of them. Firstly, Nucor is already above its pre-pandemic price, and it looks like investors have already rotated into it as a cyclical play. All of its growth seems to be priced into current share prices.Cleveland-Cliffs acquired substantially all of ArcelorMittal’s U.S. operations back in December. It states that its objective is “to generate a long-term return of 12-15% on equity and provide sustainable distributionsfor unitholders while targeting annual distribution growth of 5-9%.”The company has grown over the past year on a net income basis. Net income in 2020 reached $394 million, up from $233 million in the year prior. Perhaps as important, the company saw a large increase in revenues during 2020. Brookfield Infrastructure Partners recorded$8.885 billion in 2020 revenues. In 2019, that figure was a much more modest $6.597 billion.So the company itself looks to be in strong position, regardless of the positive catalyst provided by President Biden’s American Jobs Plan. It just makes sense to invest in it as a play on a different narrative in 5G than network competition. AMT stock recently dropped below $200 and has rebounded sharply in the past three weeks to around $240 per share.American Tower REIT released Q4 and full-year earnings back on Feb. 25. Althoughrevenue, net income and EBITDA all increasedfor the full year, AMT stock pitched downward for the next week and a half. Perhaps this was attributable to the fact that it missed quarterly EPS expectations. In any case, AMT shares are up again and more than retraced the prior losses.Biden’s plan calls for a $100 billion investment into high-speed broadband. Although his plan hasn’t been enacted as law, broadband will certainly be less contentious than some green initiatives.
