On April 29, it was Amazon's (AMZN) turn to drop the mic with another earnings smasher, its fourth consecutive all-around beat. The tech and consumer goods giant topped expectations across the board, and remained on track to achieve world domination: by far the largest global retailer and IaaS cloud provider.
\n
One very important piece of Amazon's business seems to justify bullish after-hours reaction more than anything else, as I watch the stock soar 4% ahead of the earnings call. Amazon Web Services delivered much higher-than-forecasted revenues and solid margins of 30.8%, fueling optimism for cloud and digital transformation.
\n
Results were spotless
\n
Wall Street already expected Amazon to have an outstanding quarter, with EPS climbing by nearly 100%. Little did analysts know that the company's earnings would top aggressive projections by the third widest margin of the past five years, at least. EPS of $15.79 was an astonishing 215% increase YOY.
\n
The table below, particularly the area highlighted, depicts Amazon's impressive top-line performance. The broad North America and International segments, which basically encompass everything except cloud infrastructure services, experienced growth of at least 40%, fueled by:
\n
\n
lingering stay-at-home tailwinds from the pandemic;
\n
a likely permanent shift in how consumers shop (i.e. online);
\n
the ramp up of smaller initiatives that are still in high-growth stage.
\n
\n
Source: Collage from earnings report
\n
The slower growth, smaller revenue AWS segment, however, is what I believe impressed investors the most in the first quarter. Top-line growth of 32% was quite an achievement, compared to 28% last quarter. The four percentage-point growthaccelerationcompares very favorably to Microsoft (MSFT) Azure's two percentage-point deceleration in the same period. This apparent shift in market share may explain why AMZN was up strongly after hours, while MSFT was down about 0.4%.
\n
I believe that the market pays too much attention to quarter-by-quarter cloud revenue flows. Matters like revenue recognition and lumpiness in large contracts can impact short-term performance. Yet, investor sentiment seems to get a boost whenever AWS performs well, as it did in the first quarter. All the better for Amazon shareholders.
\n
Stock is hot, company is hotter
\n
Some might feel uneasy buying AMZN after the stock climbed 16% in the past month alone, while the S&P 500 traded higher by \"only\" 6% during the same period. This is especially true if one considers recent bullishness in Amazon stock to have been driven by a speculated stock split that, until now, has not been confirmed.
\n
But on the heels of a killer quarter, I believe that it is very hard to build a bearish case on Amazon. Yes, multiples are high (see below), and they likely will continue to be for the foreseeable future. But the company's staggering fundamentals seem to justify the valuation premium. Consider the dizzying growth pace of virtually all Amazon's sub-segments, much of which I would credit to secular (not temporary, pandemic-related) trends in digital commerce and cloud adoption.
\n
Data by YCharts
\n
To invest in AMZN, I believe that one needs to focus on the long term. In the short term, anything can happen to the stock. A post-earnings, \"sell the news\" pullback driven by profit taking is certainly not out of question.
\n
But look farther out in time, and it is likely that AMZN will continue to grow into its valuation. For example, 2026 EPS projections currently stand at over $200. Judging by what Amazon delivered in Q1, they could prove to be conservative estimates. At current levels, shares trade at a five-year forward P/E of only 17x, which is absurdly low (in my view) for a company that will likely continue to thrive well beyond the next few years.
","source":"seekingalpha","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Amazon Earnings Review: On Track For World Domination
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nAmazon Earnings Review: On Track For World Domination\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-04-30 15:53 GMT+8 seekingalpha\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Summary\n\nBig Tech has been having an outstanding Q1, with Amazon being the latest to drop the mic with another massive all-around beat.\nAWS seems to justify bullish after-hours reaction more than ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"AMZN":"亚马逊"},"source_url":"https://seekingalpha.com/article/4422778-amazon-earnings-review-on-track-for-world-domination","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/5a36db9d73b4222bc376d24ccc48c8a4","article_id":"1103818454","content_text":"Summary\n\nBig Tech has been having an outstanding Q1, with Amazon being the latest to drop the mic with another massive all-around beat.\nAWS seems to justify bullish after-hours reaction more than anything else, on the back of growth acceleration and solid margins.\nAmazon shares are looking hot, after a 16% one-month rally. At current levels, shares trade at a five-year forward P/E of only 17x, which is absurdly low (in my view) for a company that will likely continue to thrive well beyond the next few years.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":820,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":109287309,"gmtCreate":1619700448401,"gmtModify":1634210627729,"author":{"id":"3575595890903505","authorId":"3575595890903505","name":"AudricJohn","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/33c25f684f7a95d0644c49a22a65f870","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false},"themes":[],"htmlText":"More greens![财迷]","listText":"More greens![财迷]","text":"More greens![财迷]","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/109287309","repostId":"1153401332","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1153401332","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Providing stock market headlines, business news, financials and earnings ","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Tiger Newspress","id":"1079075236","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8274c5b9d4c2852bfb1c4d6ce16c68ba"},"pubTimestamp":1619698148,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1153401332?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-04-29 20:09","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Toplines Before US Market Open on Thursday","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1153401332","media":"Tiger Newspress","summary":"US stock futures all rose, Dow Jones futures rose 0.39%, Nasdaq 100 futures rose 1.04%, and S&P 500 ","content":"
US stock futures all rose, Dow Jones futures rose 0.39%, Nasdaq 100 futures rose 1.04%, and S&P 500 futures rose 0.68%.As investors considered a batch of stronger-than-expected earnings results from major companies and a sweeping set of proposals from President Joe Biden aimed at revamping the country's infrastructure and supporting families, children and students.
\n
*Source From Tiger Trade, EST 08:10
\n
TheFederal Reserveupgraded its view of the economy and held its line that any near-term inflation rises will be temporary, while keeping rates near zero and asset purchases steady as it concluded its latest meeting on Wednesday.
\n
Additionally, U.S. PresidentJoe Bidenused his first joint address to Congress to outline his new $1.8 trillion plan aimed toward children and families while proposing raised taxes on corporations and rich Americans.
\n
Turning to economic data, in addition to the weekly data onjobless claims, Thursday brings us the first quarterGDPnumber, at 8:30 AM ET (1330 GMT), which is expected to show growth of 6.1% on a yearly basis after growing 4.3% in the fourth quarter of 2020, fueled by unprecedented monetary policy support and fiscal stimulus.
\n
Take a look at some of the biggest movers in the premarket:
\n
Facebook(FB) – Facebook exceeded analysts’ forecasts by $1.03 a share, with quarterly profit of $3.30 per share. There is the potential for this to be a very noisy quarterly report given what happened throughout the quarter, so we could be in store for a lot of one-time items. With the stock having rebounded a bit in recent weeks, investors are looking for significant signs of progress and a major update on the yearly forecast.
\n
While expectations dipped throughout the quarter, Tesla ended up with a preliminary delivery record of 184,800 vehicles for Q1 2021, up a little more than 4,000 units sequentially. However, that was all due to sales of the Model 3/Y increasing by more than 21,000 units from Q4, as there were only about 2,000 S/X units sold. Despite Elon Musk's statement on the Q4 conference call, as well as his tweets that the new versions of the S/X were already in production and deliveries would start in February, those new vehicles didn't make it to customers during Q1. Investors will be looking for an explanation as to what happened that caused Model S/X production to be zero for the quarter, and what the status is there as we are a number of weeks into Q2.
\n
As for the headline financials, everyone will be comparing the major results to the Q4 figures that Tesla reported. For that period, total revenues were just above $10.74 billion. Of that, more than $9.31 billion came from automotive revenues, with $401 million of that being regulatory revenue credits sales. Tesla had automotive GAAP gross margins of 25.6%, but when excluding those highly profitable credit sales, non-GAAP margins were just 21.0%. Tesla delivered GAAP net income of $270 million, or $0.24 per share, while non-GAAP EPS came in at $0.80.
\n
As I discussed in my most recent Tesla article, my main focus will be on the company's margins this quarter. If overall revenues are close to the street average, say within $100 million without any major surprises like credit sales, I won't make a big deal about the top line. Gross margins are more in focus given a number of price cuts early in the quarter, some price increases later in the quarter, the China Model Y ramp, and increases in key commodity prices. If Tesla can keep its margin profile close to that of Q4, then expectations for long term increased profitability will probably remain elevated. As I usually do, the table below shows my three cases for what results could look like. Dollar values are in millions.
\n

\n
I'm not expecting any major surprises here for the first quarter, as I'm a little below the current street average for revenues but higher on the bottom line. If management was correct that there were a number of one-time items that dragged down Q4 profitability, then I think Tesla will be a little better off on its expense structure than analysts are expecting. Of course, credit sales are always a wildcard, and the Model S/X situation could complicate things a bit. As a point of reference, the numbers above exclude any potential gains from the sales of Bitcoin, which could be in the hundreds of millions of dollars or even more if Tesla sold some of or even all of its position during the quarter.
\n
The second major item to watch is the yearly forecast. While management called for deliveries of over 750,000 for 2021, investors are looking for a lot more than that, especially after the Q1 figures. With even a very modest contribution from the S/X in Q2, the next stage of the Made in China Model Y ramp should easily get deliveries over 200k in this quarter. The table below shows Tesla's installed capacity update from its prior reports along with actual production reported.
\n
Source: Tesla quarterly reports on IR site
\n
Over the last three quarters, Tesla has been running production at about 94% of the previous earnings report's four quarter rolling average for total production capacity (annual figure divided by four). Extrapolating out at say 95% for the rest of the year with no additional capacity increases puts Tesla at about 882,000 units, and that doesn't include any help from the new factories in Berlin or Texas. Thus, even if you take out a few thousand units for the slow S/X ramp and assume nothing from those two places, Tesla should be able to produce at least 875,000 units for the year. Realistically, the number should be closer to 900,000 unless there are any major problems, so the yearly delivery forecast really should be in the high 800k area. Whether or not management does give us a concrete number or even an approximation is uncertain, however.
\n
The final item I'll be watching for is for a major update on Tesla's autonomy progress. Elon Musk's statement of a million robo-taxis on the road in 2020 obviously didn't pan out, and some have suggested the company will launch an Uber (UBER) like driver based ride hailing service soon. Late last week, Tesla released its Q1 vehicle safety report, and the results were a bit underwhelming. For the first time since releasing this data, the year over year Autopilot data worsened, with the number of miles per crash coming down by nearly 10.5% from Q1 2020. Another horrible deadly crash over the weekend has put the company in the spotlight again, and not in a good way. Tesla's self-driving ambitions are a big reason why investors have been bidding up this stock, but the program continues to fall behind almost every timeline that Elon Musk has put out there.
\n
Tesla shares go into this earnings report at an interesting time. As the chart below shows, they spent nearly two months below their 50-day moving average (green line) before getting above it recently. Should shares drop after earnings, this key technical level would likely continue its fall at a brisk pace, increasing the chance of a death cross happening in a couple of months. On the flip side, a positive earnings reaction could get the 50-day line moving higher and help to form a support base.
\n
Source: Yahoo! Finance
\n
In the end, Tesla's earnings report next week will certainly be an interesting one. This has the potential to be a very noisy report, given no Model S/X production and potentially large Bitcoin gains. I'll be most focusing on margins as the Model Y started to ramp in China, and we saw numerous price changes during the quarter. Now that almost a third of the year is done, investors will be waiting to see if management gives a more concrete yearly delivery forecast, with expectations rising after Q1's print. Finally, questions over autonomy plans will only grow as autopilot statistics weakened and another high profile crash occurred. While Tesla shares are still well off their all-time highs, they've rebounded a bit in recent weeks to get above a key technical level recently.
","source":"seekingalpha","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Tesla: 3 Key Earnings Questions
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nTesla: 3 Key Earnings Questions\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-04-20 15:13 GMT+8 seekingalpha\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Summary\n\nMargins in focus after unusual quarter and China factory ramp.\nInvestors expecting guidance update given Q1 deliveries.\nRobo-taxi situation still unclear as autopilot data weakens.\n\nPhoto by ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"TSLA":"特斯拉"},"source_url":"https://seekingalpha.com/article/4419885-tesla-3-key-earnings-questions","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/5a36db9d73b4222bc376d24ccc48c8a4","article_id":"1186349790","content_text":"Summary\n\nMargins in focus after unusual quarter and China factory ramp.\nInvestors expecting guidance update given Q1 deliveries.\nRobo-taxi situation still unclear as autopilot data weakens.\n\nPhoto by AdrianHancu/iStock Editorial via Getty Images\nAll eyes will be on electric vehicle maker Tesla (TSLA) next Monday as the company reports earnings after the bell. There is the potential for this to be a very noisy quarterly report given what happened throughout the quarter, so we could be in store for a lot of one-time items. With the stock having rebounded a bit in recent weeks, investors are looking for significant signs of progress and a major update on the yearly forecast.\nWhile expectations dipped throughout the quarter, Tesla ended up with a preliminary delivery record of 184,800 vehicles for Q1 2021, up a little more than 4,000 units sequentially. Despite having a large share of the luxury EV market, the company has posted several years of significant losses in its history. Investors are now hoping that the days of red ink are behind us, which is why the focus must now shift to key margin metrics.
\n
Tesla's GAAP and non-GAAP numbers have always varied wildly due to stock-based compensation. That gap has been quite large recently thanks to Elon Musk's large bonus plan hitting a number of tranches in 2020. Analysts primarily use the adjusted numbers, and Tesla delivered $2.24 in adjusted EPS last year. As the graphic below shows, estimates for this year have been rising for more than a year, with the current average of $4.22 up a bit from the $3.98 average seen at the end of last year.
\n
Source: Seeking Alpha Tesla analyst estimates page
\n
It will be very interesting to see the margin numbers reported when Tesla earnings come out on Monday, April 26th. While the company did beat estimates for Q1 production and deliveries, there was no production of the Model S or X in the quarter. Elon Musk had said on the Q1 conference call that the refreshed versions of those luxury models were in production already and would be delivered in February, but that obviously did not happen. With these being higher margin vehicles in the past, you would figure overall margins will be hurt.
\n
Q1 also saw sharp rises in key commodity prices like nickel and cobalt, as well as the initial ramp of the Model Y made in China. Tesla skeptics also believe that highly profitable credit sales will fade over time, but it remains to be seen in the short term how much they will contribute. There also were a number of price cuts during the quarter, like for the Model 3 in Japan and a number of European countries. For a time, Tesla also cut prices in the US on the Model Y and also had a much lower priced Standard Range variant that was sold for part of the quarter.
\n
As the graphic below details, Tesla's GAAP automotive gross margins have mostly been in the mid 20s percentage-wise over the past five quarters. Credit sales have helped quite a bit, but don't forget that this is only just part of the business. Tesla's energy business has seen low margins or negative margins in recent periods, and the services/other segment loses plenty of money each quarter. Overall for Q4 2020, the company's total GAAP gross margin figure was 19.23%, nearly 500 basis points below the automotive segment's GAAP gross margin figure.
\n
Source: Tesla Q4 2020 investor letter
\n
With almost no Model S/X vehicles sold during the period, company-wide average selling prices will certainly decline. The key question is was Tesla able to keep costs at a reasonable level, or are we going to see a significant drop in gross margins? Management spoke on the conference call about a number of supposedly one-time items that were headwinds in Q4, which if they truly dissipate could really help things in Q1.
\n
On the operating side, there shouldn't be as much expense given a shorter quarter, less coming from the CEO pay package, and Q4 having a larger part of expenses relating to the employee performance grant process. As a point of reference, the current estimates call for $10.12 billion in Q1 revenue and $0.74 in non-GAAP EPS, compared to $10.74 billion and $0.80 in Q4 2020.
\n
While the Street expects more than $4 in earnings this year, that number is forecast to surge into the low-double digits by 2024. It certainly helps that expected sharply rising deliveries over time should result in more revenue. However, if there are too many price cuts needed to achieve that growth, whether it be to competition or other factors like global economics, certain margin targets will not be met.
\n
Don't forget, Tesla's share count is rising over time, which is pressuring the EPS forecast for a given level of net income. The unit sales surge in Japan is a good example of how things can change, as it was driven by price cuts of 13%-17% for the Model 3. I can certainly sell more dollar bills for 90 cents each than I can for 95 cents, but it won't be good for my bottom line.
\n
As for Tesla shares, they are at a very interesting point right now. They closed Monday just above the 100-day moving average (green line below), but remain under the 50-day (purple line). The current Street price target average implies $60 of downside from here, and the stock's movement until earnings will likely be dependent on whether inflation data results in bond yields moving sharply higher or not. If the stock cannot break above the 50-day, that declining key technical level could provide more resistance, and it brings up the possibility of the stock seeing the dreaded death cross later this year.
\n
Source: Yahoo! Analyst estimates are certainly on the rise, with the Street now calling for a more than $2.2 billion improvement in non-GAAP net income this year. Two of the financial world's biggest stories over the last 12 months have been Bitcoin's incredible rally and the success of Cathie Wood's ARK Invest company and its growth-focused exchange-traded funds (ETFs). The value of a single Bitcoin has risen roughly 800% over the last year and is currently at $58,600. Meanwhile the value of the ARK Innovation ETF has risen roughly 170% across the same stretch, a highly impressive performance in its own right.

Bitcoin has crushed it over the last year. It's possible that Bitcoin has more huge gains ahead, and the coin has certainly far outperformed where I thought it would be over the last year. However, I generally stick to the Peter Lynch \"invest in what you know\" approach, and the difficulty I have mapping out why Bitcoin should go up or down means there are growth stocks held in ARK funds that I find more appealing.

It's not that I haven't looked into Bitcoin. I've read and heard about its 21 million hard coin supply cap, hash rates, the Lightning Network, and the related critiques of fiat currency that underpin many arguments for new digital assets. My investing focus skews toward growth stocks that are riskier than the market at large, but at the end of the day, I just don't have a great case for why Bitcoin should be worth more one year from now -- particularly when there are other cryptocurrencies that offer superior functionality in many respects.

While I'm not super bullish on Bitcoin or the ARK-favored Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (OTC:GBTC), there are stocks in the company's actively managed ETFs that are right up my ally. As such, these stakes are more of a speculative trade and less of an actual commitment to the premise of cryptocurrency. Wood's ARK Fintech Innovation ETF (NYSEMKT:ARKF) as well as the ARK Next Generation Internet ETF sold off a bunch of PayPal shares recently. It's still the fintech fund's fourth-biggest holding, though, making it clear that Wood and her management team see something in it. Investing in her strategy definitely provides the speculation and big potential returns that those interested in cryptocurrencies covet so dearly. Overall, the heavy focus on tech is a bit too concentrated for my tastes, as a shift in sector trends could be significantly troublesome. That being said, Wood has created some great gains in her ARK Innovation ETF, and there are lessons to be learned from it.

Among Wood's largest holdings, I like Square because of its strategic positioning within e-commerce. Because its services allow businesses to create online stores easily, and link it all with their inventory and marketing, Square serves as a middle man for all kinds of different industries. The company's suite of mobile payment software offers a great deal of utility to the customer. Annual revenue growth has been strong, but 2020 was certainly the biggest year for the company. Sales doubled to $9.48 billion, with earnings more than doubling to $0.84 per diluted share.

The one catch, of course, is valuation. As with most of these rapidly growing tech names, Square is not cheap, trading at over 300 times last year's earnings. This one is all about the future, and the big premiums are no different than investing in something as unbelievably speculative as Bitcoin. Square offers utility. Overall, the heavy focus on tech is a bit too concentrated for my tastes, as a shift in sector trends could be significantly troublesome. That being said, Wood has created some great gains in her ARK Innovation ETF, and there are lessons to be learned from it.Among Wood's largest holdings, I like Square because of its strategic positioning within e-commerce.
