Sarah Silbiger/Bloomberg</span></p>\n<p>Goldman Sachs Group Inc. cut its forecast for U.S. economic growth after Senator Joe Manchin rejected the Biden administration’s roughly $2 trillion tax-and-spend program, leaving Democrats with few options for reviving the economic agenda.</p>\n<p>Goldman said in a research note Sunday that the likely failure of the Build Back Better legislation had prompted it to lower its real gross domestic product forecasts in 2022 to:</p>\n<ul>\n <li>2% in the first quarter from 3% previously</li>\n <li>3% in the second quarter versus. 3.5% before; and</li>\n <li>2.75% in the third quarter from 3% prior</li>\n</ul>\n<p>“We recently put the probability of a modified version of the BBB legislation passing at slightly better than even but, in light of Manchin’s comments, the odds have clearly declined and we will remove the assumption from our forecast,” Goldman economists led by Jan Hatzius said.</p>\n<p>Manchin’s announcement caught the White House off guard, following weeks of negotiations between President Joe Biden and the West Virginia Democrat and just a day after the Senate adjourned for the holidays.</p>\n<p>The administration now must determine whether it can salvage some of the tax-and-spending bill to address Manchin’s demands while maintaining the support of the rest of the Democratic caucus.</p>\n<p>Goldman said its forecast for headline CPI to reach as high as 7% in the next few months before easing means the inflation concerns Manchin and others had expressed are likely to persist, making passage more difficult. It said the omicron variant is also likely to shift political attention back to virus-related issues and away from long-term reforms.</p>\n<p>In terms of monetary policy, it said most Federal Reserve officials likely expected the BBB Act or something like it to become law, adding that a failure to pass it “would introduce some risk” to Goldman’s expectation the FOMC will deliver the first interest-rate hike in March.</p>\n<p>The note added there “is still a good chance” that Congress enacts a much smaller set of fiscal proposals dealing with manufacturing incentives and supply chain issues.</p>\n<p>“There is also still a chance that Congress retroactively extends the expanded child tax credit, with some modifications, though we think the odds of this occurring are less than even,” Goldman said.</p>\n<p>S&amp;P 500 futures dropped as much as 0.9% on Monday, while yields on 10-year Treasuries fell three basis points as risk-off sentiment swept markets. The drawback of ETFs is the same as their advantage: diversification. Its adjusted net revenue as a percentage of GMV is 12%, while its take rate has risen threefold since 2018, better than Alibaba.</p>\n<p>“Grab has the potential to be re-rated as an all-encompassing super app like Alibaba. It is becoming a one-stop shop for ride-hailing, food delivery, payments and other services. The current valuation does not reflect its potential as a super-app,” says Tiruchelvam.</p>\n<p>Grab has three main segments — deliveries, mobility and financial services. Tiruchelvam expects the company’s delivery GMV to rise by a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 42% in FY20 to 24, assuming the ratio of GMV monetisation to be 15%.</p>\n<p>The mobility revenue is expected to rise by a CAGR of 32% in FY20 to FY24. Tellimer assumes the ratio of GMV monetisation to gradually increase from 18% in FY20 to 24% by FY24.</p>\n<p>Grab’s financial services total payment volume is expected to grow at a CAGR of 43%&nbsp;in FY20 to FY24.</p>\n<p>The tech company’s operating margins for FY20 were -298.3%. Tiruchelvam estimates Grab’s operating margins to improve and turn positive during the forecast period, expecting it to reach 30% by FY24.</p>\n<p>In his risk analysis, Tiruchelvam says Grab may face serious business risks as its business segments are still in the early stages of growth. The food delivery business, for instance, is still in its infancy. Major international players such as Meituan Dianping may enter the market and undercut Grab.</p>\n<p>The end of the pandemic may also weaken the demand for food delivery and therefore affect the company’s growth trajectory, he adds.</p>\n<p>“Despite the progress in vaccination, there have been renewed restrictions in some Asean countries including Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. This could adversely affect Grab’s business, financial condition, results of operations and prospects,” says Tiruchelvam.</p>\n<p>There is also the risk of a vastly disproportionate voting share of its founder Anthony Tan, says Tiruchelvam. “Its founder Anthony Tan Tan holds 3.7% of the shares in the company by virtue of his 183 million Class B Shares. This includes 28 million shares from co-founder Tan Hooi Ling and 18 million shares from Grab president Ming Ma – these shares are beneficially owned by Tan.</p>\n<p>“Each Class B share equals 45 votes, while each Class A share is equal to one vote. Accordingly, Tan controls more than 60% of the voting shares after the merger with Altimeter. Its adjusted net revenue as a percentage of GMV is 12%, while its take rate has risen threefold since 2018, better than Alibaba.\n“Grab has the potential to be re-rated as an all-encompassing super app like Alibaba. The&nbsp;S&amp;P 500&nbsp;fell 0.9%.</p>\n<p>Mahaney offers a four-part thesis on his more bullish stance on Shopify.</p>\n<p>For one thing, he notes that the stock was off about 20% from its high for the year. Mahaney observes that the stock’s valuation, as measured by enterprise value as a multiple of forward sales, is back down to pre-Covid levels. And he argues that Shopify is “one of the biggest structural winners” from the Covid crisis, as more sellers shift business to a digital model.</p>\n<p>Mahaney writes that he views Shopify as “one of the highest quality” companies he covers. Through 2023, the company should grow at a compound annual growth rate of 34%, according to the analyst, which he says makes it among the fastest-growing midsize or large internet companies, trailing only&nbsp;Snap&nbsp;(SNAP) and&nbsp;Uber Technologies&nbsp;(UBER), both beneficiaries of easy 2021 comparisons.</p>\n<p>Mahaney also thinks Shopify’s Ebitda margins (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) will expand from 14% in 2019 to 18% this year, with levels above 20% in three of the last four quarters. “The long-term margin profile of Shopify was historically a key investor concern and we believe this year they have proved that this business can generate significant free cash flow,” he writes.</p>\n<p>A third positive for the stock, Mahaney contends, is growth in new and emerging areas. To wit, daily options volumes are up 70% in April, up from YTD lows of $2.4bn on 30-Mar.</p><p><b>In total, across single stocks, $544BN of options are set to expiry today, including $305BN calls.</b>As such, today’s expiry could be important for stocks with large open interest in at-the-money(ATM) options, as market makers delta-hedging their unusually large options portfolios will be active. This flow is likely to dampen volatility in some names while exacerbating stock price moves in others.</p><p>How to trade this?</p><p>As Goldman's Vishal Vivek writes, at major expirations, options traders track situations where<b>a large amount of open interest is set to expire.</b>In situations where there is a significant amount of expiring open interest in at-the-money strikes (strike prices at or very near the current stockprice), delta-hedging activity can impact the underlying stock’s trading that day. If market makers or other options traders who delta-hedge their positions are net long ATM options, expiration-related flow could have the effect of dampening stock price movements, causing the stock price to settle near the strike with large open interest. This situation is often referred to as a “pin” and can be an ideal situation fora large investor trying to enter/exit a stock position. Alternatively, if delta-hedgers are net short ATM options (have a “negative gamma” position), their hedging activity could exacerbate stock price moves.</p><p>What that means it expiration-related trades may cause trading activity to aggressively pick up for stocks with a significant amount of ATM open interest.</p><p>So to help traders looking to hop on for daytrading opportunities, here is a table identifying possible focus stocks with large ATM open interest expiring today, which is compared to the average daily volume of the underlying stocks. As Goldman puts it, \"<i>expiration-related activity is likely to have more of an impact if the open interest represents a significant percentage of the stock’s volume.\"</i></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0dac61cb87c2f2700d8a0e8e64324f81\" tg-width=\"500\" tg-height=\"638\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">Finally, for what it's worth, this morning our friends at SpotGamma write that this has been a rather strange OPEX cycle, \"with a consistent almost mechanical bid pushing markets higher. We’ve not seen the Call Wall “breached” this many times before, but there are other aberrations that we’ve mentioned in previous notes – like net put sales. We’ve got some theories on this we are posting in a longer form piece.\"</p><p>According to SG, because implied volatility has now compressed (ie VIX at new lows) there is now more potential for “long term” volatility. Recall how as of late any sharp, violent drop in markets was bought so quickly (see chart below).<b>These bursts lower coincided with record VIX spikes, but a reflective snap-back bid would bring a market recovery of equal force as the VIX&nbsp; (i.e. implied volatility) reversed.</b></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ae7a60d873792b825bdda669cafa0ed3\" tg-width=\"500\" tg-height=\"297\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">And one other curious observation from SpotGamma:</p><blockquote>When implied volatility is very high, its very sensitive to market moves and also signaling that markets are expecting more large moves ahead. As soon as markets would pause or catch a support level, that implied volatility would quickly reverse lower. <b>We often think of this analogy that if a shark stops swimming, it sinks ( partially true!). If the market stops dropping then Implied volatility sinks.</b></blockquote><p>With this, as we often talk about, lower implied volatility (ie lower VIX) signals market makers have to buy back short hedges which fuels rallies. SG's conclusion: this current level of lower implied volatility now gives the market more downside firepower.&nbsp; Starting with a lower implied volatility “slows down” that responsive “snap-back” buying mechanism.&nbsp; To wit, daily options volumes are up 70% in April, up from YTD lows of $2.4bn on 30-Mar.In total, across single stocks, $544BN of options are set to expiry today, including $305BN calls.As such, today’s expiry could be important for stocks with large open interest in at-the-money(ATM) options, as market makers delta-hedging their unusually large options portfolios will be active. This flow is likely to dampen volatility in some names while exacerbating stock price moves in others.How to trade this?As Goldman's Vishal Vivek writes, at major expirations, options traders track situations wherea large amount of open interest is set to expire.In situations where there is a significant amount of expiring open interest in at-the-money strikes (strike prices at or very near the current stockprice), delta-hedging activity can impact the underlying stock’s trading that day. If market makers or other options traders who delta-hedge their positions are net long ATM options, expiration-related flow could have the effect of dampening stock price movements, causing the stock price to settle near the strike with large open interest. This situation is often referred to as a “pin” and can be an ideal situation fora large investor trying to enter/exit a stock position. Alternatively, if delta-hedgers are net short ATM options (have a “negative gamma” position), their hedging activity could exacerbate stock price moves.What that means it expiration-related trades may cause trading activity to aggressively pick up for stocks with a significant amount of ATM open interest.So to help traders looking to hop on for daytrading opportunities, here is a table identifying possible focus stocks with large ATM open interest expiring today, which is compared to the average daily volume of the underlying stocks. As Goldman puts it, \"expiration-related activity is likely to have more of an impact if the open interest represents a significant percentage of the stock’s volume.\"Finally, for what it's worth, this morning our friends at SpotGamma write that this has been a rather strange OPEX cycle, \"with a consistent almost mechanical bid pushing markets higher. We’ve not seen the Call Wall “breached” this many times before, but there are other aberrations that we’ve mentioned in previous notes – like net put sales. We’ve got some theories on this we are posting in a longer form piece.\"According to SG, because implied volatility has now compressed (ie VIX at new lows) there is now more potential for “long term” volatility. Recall how as of late any sharp, violent drop in markets was bought so quickly (see chart below).These bursts lower coincided with record VIX spikes, but a reflective snap-back bid would bring a market recovery of equal force as the VIX  (i.e. implied volatility) reversed.And one other curious observation from SpotGamma:When implied volatility is very high, its very sensitive to market moves and also signaling that markets are expecting more large moves ahead. As soon as markets would pause or catch a support level, that implied volatility would quickly reverse lower. We often think of this analogy that if a shark stops swimming, it sinks ( partially true!). If the market stops dropping then Implied volatility sinks.With this, as we often talk about, lower implied volatility (ie lower VIX) signals market makers have to buy back short hedges which fuels rallies. This performance lags that of the broader market, as the <b>S&amp;P 500 </b>index has returned 9.5% and the tech-heavy <b>Nasdaq Composite</b> has gained 4.7% over this period.</p>\n<p>The Roundhill Ball Metaverse ETF is an index fund that's designed to track the performance of the Ball Metaverse Index, which consists of a portfolio of worldwide companies involved in the metaverse. It had 40 holdings as of Dec. 16. That is, the computer gaming and tech giant provides the tools other companies need to create their own metaverses. Most notable among these tools is its recently launched Omniverse platform. The \"Omniverse brings together Nvidia's expertise in AI [artificial intelligence], simulation, graphics, and computing infrastructure,\" CEO Jensen Huang said last month in the company's release of its stellar fiscal third-quarter results.</p>\n<p>Roblox (No. 2) and Unity Software (No. 5) are gaming engines that can be used to create virtual worlds. They're both relatively new to the public markets: Roblox went public in March 2021 via a direct listing on the New York Stock Exchange and Unity held its initial public offering (IPO) in September 2020. Both companies are rapidly growing revenue, but neither is profitable from an accounting standpoint.</p>\n<p>Microsoft has been building Mesh, its mixed-reality platform that will power Microsoft Teams and other applications. Users will be able to access Mesh on the company's enterprise-focused augmented-reality headset HoloLens 2, as well as virtual reality (VR) headsets, mobile phones, tablets, or PCs using any Mesh-enabled app.</p>\n<p>Last week, Meta Platforms took its first leap into the metaverse via its public launch of Horizon Worlds to adults in the U.S. and Canada. Horizon Worlds is a free social VR platform in which users equipped with the company's Oculus Quest 2 VR headsets can interact.</p>\n<h2>A solid way to invest in the metaverse</h2>\n<p>The Roundhill Ball Metaverse ETF looks like a solid way for investors to get exposure to the metaverse. The drawback of ETFs is the same as their advantage: diversification. Indeed, investors willing to do some work and select individual stocks should have a decent shot at outperforming this fund.</p>\n<p>If you're looking for a larger company that's profitable, it's probably hard to go wrong with Nvidia, Microsoft, Amazon, or Apple. Meta Platforms (the former Facebook) isn't as good a bet. It has higher regulatory risk than the other big U.S.-based tech companies, in my view. Moreover, it has nearly all its (revenue) eggs in one basket because it generates almost all of its revenue from digital advertising.</p>\n<p>Risk-averse investors should steer clear of Tencent Holdings because it's headquartered in China. Its adjusted net revenue as a percentage of GMV is 12%, while its take rate has risen threefold since 2018, better than Alibaba.</p>\n<p>“Grab has the potential to be re-rated as an all-encompassing super app like Alibaba. It is becoming a one-stop shop for ride-hailing, food delivery, payments and other services. The current valuation does not reflect its potential as a super-app,” says Tiruchelvam.</p>\n<p>Grab has three main segments — deliveries, mobility and financial services. Tiruchelvam expects the company’s delivery GMV to rise by a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 42% in FY20 to 24, assuming the ratio of GMV monetisation to be 15%.</p>\n<p>The mobility revenue is expected to rise by a CAGR of 32% in FY20 to FY24. Tellimer assumes the ratio of GMV monetisation to gradually increase from 18% in FY20 to 24% by FY24.</p>\n<p>Grab’s financial services total payment volume is expected to grow at a CAGR of 43%&nbsp;in FY20 to FY24.</p>\n<p>The tech company’s operating margins for FY20 were -298.3%. Tiruchelvam estimates Grab’s operating margins to improve and turn positive during the forecast period, expecting it to reach 30% by FY24.</p>\n<p>In his risk analysis, Tiruchelvam says Grab may face serious business risks as its business segments are still in the early stages of growth. The food delivery business, for instance, is still in its infancy. Major international players such as Meituan Dianping may enter the market and undercut Grab.</p>\n<p>The end of the pandemic may also weaken the demand for food delivery and therefore affect the company’s growth trajectory, he adds.</p>\n<p>“Despite the progress in vaccination, there have been renewed restrictions in some Asean countries including Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. This could adversely affect Grab’s business, financial condition, results of operations and prospects,” says Tiruchelvam.</p>\n<p>There is also the risk of a vastly disproportionate voting share of its founder Anthony Tan, says Tiruchelvam. “Its founder Anthony Tan Tan holds 3.7% of the shares in the company by virtue of his 183 million Class B Shares. This includes 28 million shares from co-founder Tan Hooi Ling and 18 million shares from Grab president Ming Ma – these shares are beneficially owned by Tan.</p>\n<p>“Each Class B share equals 45 votes, while each Class A share is equal to one vote. Accordingly, Tan controls more than 60% of the voting shares after the merger with Altimeter.
