Covid-19 pandemic","content":"
Summary

The company is growing rapidly as a result of secular trends as well as the Covid-19 pandemic.

It is operating in a huge addressable market that is likely to grow for the foreseeable future.

Coursera enjoys many competitive advantages, among them a large, existing user base, price-to-cost advantages, and the ability to personalize content as a result of its trove of data.

Given its scale, and competitive advantages, the company should win an outsized share of its market opportunity.

However, because the company has not turned a profit, there is a chance that its stock may be too volatile in the near term. Buying when the company turns a profit is the safer bet.

Coursera (COURS), the online learning platform founded in 2012 by former Stanford University computer science professors Daphne Koller and Andrew Ng, filed itsIPO prospectuswith the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The Mountain View, California-based company offers individuals access to over 4,000 Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) from 200 educational institutions and corporations. The company also offers over two dozen degree programs at prices lower than what a learner would pay at a traditional, in-person institution. As the company grows its offering, it will be able to compete head-to-head with other “online program management” (OPM) providers, such as 2U(NASDAQ:TWOU), which is already publicly traded, and Noodle Partners.

Ng’sshareholder letter in the S-1articulated clearly just what the company is about:

“We believe that education is the source of human progress. In today’s economy in which the skills needed to succeed are rapidly evolving, education is becoming more important than ever. As automation and digital disruption are poised to replace unprecedented numbers of jobs worldwide, giving workers the opportunity to upskill and reskill will be crucial to raising global living standards and increasing social equity. Online education will play a critical role, enabling anyone, anywhere, to gain the valuable skills they need to earn a living in an increasingly digital economy.”

The filing lists Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs and Citigroup as underwriters. The number of shares and the price range of the proposed offering are yet to be determined.According to PitchBook data, Coursera’s most recent valuation in the private markets was $2.5 billion. To date, the company has raised $464 million in venture capital, most recently,$130 million in a Series F roundlast July. Coursera’s biggest institutional shareholders are New Enterprise Associates (18.3% of company stock), G Squared (15.9%) and Kleiner Perkins (9.2%).

Operating Results

The company earned $293 million in revenues for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2020, up 59% from 2019. Net losses widened by about $20 million year-on-year, reaching $66.8 million in 2020. Revenues shot up as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic’s effect on traditional education. In tandem with rising demand, operating costs associated with the company’s services rose, largely driven by the freemium content and marketing expenses. Coursera added over 12,000 new degree learners across the two years ended December 31, 2020 at an average acquisition cost of just below $2,000. The number of registered users rose by 65% year-on-year in 2020. Coursera’s accumulated deficit since its founding stood at $343.6 million as of December 31, 2020. The company does not expect to turn a profit in the foreseeable future.

The company’sCoursera for Campus, launched in late 2019to enable colleges to offer its library of MOOCs to their students, has been a key driver of recent revenue growth. At the start of the pandemic, Coursera made the program free to tertiary institutions until Sept. 30, 2020. Over 4,000 tertiary institutions from across the world signed up for the program, which, according to the company’s S-1 filing, makes it, “one of our fastest growing offerings”. As of December 31, 2020, over 130 tertiary institutions were paying for it.

At this point, it is hard to predict what the end of the pandemic would have on the company’s operating results.

The Strategy and Market Opportunity

Coursera is one of the most disruptive firms in the world. It has a flywheel approach to value creation, with significant price-to-cost advantages versus its competition. The company reported that about half of its new degree students in 2020 had been previously registered with Coursera and that its average student acquisition cost was less than $2,000. Its average student acquisition cost is lower than the industry standard. The edu-tech platform is able to efficiently acquire learners at scale because of the huge number of free, high-quality courses that it offers in partnership with top educational institutions and corporations; its ability to personalize content based on its wealth of data; the strength of word-of-mouth promotion by learners; the profitability of its affiliate paid marketing channel.

The platform offers a number of education tracks, for example:

Specializations: A learner can pay between $39 and $99 a month for job-specific content across over 500 categories.

MasterTrack Certificates: For a quarter to a year, a learner can earn a certificate issued by a university-issued certificate. Prices range from $2,000 to $6,000.

Bachelor’s or Master’s Degrees: Fees range from $9,000 to $45,000.

Coursera for Enterprise: Through this platform, businesses, educational institutions and governments can deploy content to their learners.

In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, Coursera partnered with over 330 government agencies across 30 U.S. states and cities and 70 countries as part of itsCoursera Workforce Recovery Initiative, which gave governments the chance to offer unemployed workers free access to thousands of business, data science, and technology courses from companies such as Amazon(NASDAQ:AMZN)and Google(NASDAQ:GOOG)(NASDAQ:GOOGL).

The company has 77 million registered learners, as well as over 2,000 businesses (including 25% of Fortune 500 companies) and 100 government agencies who paid for its enterprise offerings. The majority of its revenue (51%) was earned outside of the United States. Converting only a fraction of its 77 million registered users into paid users would change the economics of customer acquisition. The company’s present scale is a huge competitive advantage in the market.

A learner’s curriculum is designed to be “stackable”, which is to say that a learner can go through a domain in an incremental fashion. The company is able to leverage the huge volume of data it has accumulated from its over 220 million enrollments to personalize content. So, for example, Coursera’s Skills Graphs can suggest paths for job skills.

Coursera uses technology to drive down distribution costs, make content more affordable, extend access to less economically-endowed regions, help learners keep abreast of emerging skills, and grow its market opportunity. The Covid-19 pandemic has only accelerated secular trends towards the use of technology in education.

The size of the addressable market is massive and it’s easy to see why.An August 2020 study by the United Nationsdemonstrates the degree of disruption brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic: of the 1.6 billion students in 190 countries covered in the report, or 94% of the world’s students, were prevented from going to school because of Covid-19 pandemic related school closures.

In 2017, the World Bank indicated thatof the 200 million college students in the world, many do not have job-specific skills.

The Covid-19 pandemic and prior secular trends suggest that the future of education is in blended classrooms, job-specific education and continuous, lifelong education. Online learning platforms like Coursera will be the primary means through which educational content is delivered.

Globally, spending on higher education in 2019 was $2.2 trillion, according to HolonIQ. Spending on online degrees was $36 billion and is predicted to reach $74 billion by 2025.

With a huge, existing learner base; a strong brand; and the significant advantages detailed above, Coursera is likely to grab a significant amount of the market’s growth. Of thescenarios for the future of education, it seems that Coursera will continue to grow.

Conclusion

Coursera seems poised to meet the challenges of a changing education landscape. With its vast, existing user base, its flywheel model, its competitive advantages, and its existence in a huge and growing addressable market, the company is likely to do very well. Buying when the company turns a profit is the safer bet.Coursera (COURS), the online learning platform founded in 2012 by former Stanford University computer science professors Daphne Koller and Andrew Ng, filed itsIPO prospectuswith the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The Mountain View, California-based company offers individuals access to over 4,000 Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) from 200 educational institutions and corporations. The company also offers over two dozen degree programs at prices lower than what a learner would pay at a traditional, in-person institution. As the company grows its offering, it will be able to compete head-to-head with other “online program management” (OPM) providers, such as 2U(NASDAQ:TWOU), which is already publicly traded, and Noodle Partners.Ng’sshareholder letter in the S-1articulated clearly just what the company is about:“We believe that education is the source of human progress. Online education will play a critical role, enabling anyone, anywhere, to gain the valuable skills they need to earn a living in an increasingly digital economy.”The filing lists Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs and Citigroup as underwriters. The number of shares and the price range of the proposed offering are yet to be determined.According to PitchBook data, Coursera’s most recent valuation in the private markets was $2.5 billion. To date, the company has raised $464 million in venture capital, most recently,$130 million in a Series F roundlast July. Coursera’s biggest institutional shareholders are New Enterprise Associates (18.3% of company stock), G Squared (15.9%) and Kleiner Perkins (9.2%).Operating ResultsThe company earned $293 million in revenues for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2020, up 59% from 2019. As of December 31, 2020, over 130 tertiary institutions were paying for it.At this point, it is hard to predict what the end of the pandemic would have on the company’s operating results. The Strategy and Market OpportunityCoursera is one of the most disruptive firms in the world. The platform offers a number of education tracks, for example:Specializations: A learner can pay between $39 and $99 a month for job-specific content across over 500 categories.MasterTrack Certificates: For a quarter to a year, a learner can earn a certificate issued by a university-issued certificate. Prices range from $2,000 to $6,000.Bachelor’s or Master’s Degrees: Fees range from $9,000 to $45,000.Coursera for Enterprise: Through this platform, businesses, educational institutions and governments can deploy content to their learners. In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, Coursera partnered with over 330 government agencies across 30 U.S. states and cities and 70 countries as part of itsCoursera Workforce Recovery Initiative, which gave governments the chance to offer unemployed workers free access to thousands of business, data science, and technology courses from companies such as Amazon(NASDAQ:AMZN)and Google(NASDAQ:GOOG)(NASDAQ:GOOGL).The company has 77 million registered learners, as well as over 2,000 businesses (including 25% of Fortune 500 companies) and 100 government agencies who paid for its enterprise offerings. The majority of its revenue (51%) was earned outside of the United States. Converting only a fraction of its 77 million registered users into paid users would change the economics of customer acquisition. The company’s present scale is a huge competitive advantage in the market.A learner’s curriculum is designed to be “stackable”, which is to say that a learner can go through a domain in an incremental fashion. The company is able to leverage the huge volume of data it has accumulated from its over 220 million enrollments to personalize content. So, for example, Coursera’s Skills Graphs can suggest paths for job skills.Coursera uses technology to drive down distribution costs, make content more affordable, extend access to less economically-endowed regions, help learners keep abreast of emerging skills, and grow its market opportunity. Online learning platforms like Coursera will be the primary means through which educational content is delivered.Globally, spending on higher education in 2019 was $2.2 trillion, according to HolonIQ. Spending on online degrees was $36 billion and is predicted to reach $74 billion by 2025.With a huge, existing learner base; a strong brand; and the significant advantages detailed above, Coursera is likely to grab a significant amount of the market’s growth. Of thescenarios for the future of education, it seems that Coursera will continue to grow.ConclusionCoursera seems poised to meet the challenges of a changing education landscape. With its vast, existing user base, its flywheel model, its competitive advantages, and its existence in a huge and growing addressable market, the company is likely to do very well. The company’s value proposition is compelling. However, long run success does not equate to a good investment in the short run. An unprofitable company like Coursera is likely to be very volatile on the markets until it reaches profitability. It is better to wait for Coursera to turn a profit before investing in the company.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":397,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":354810403,"gmtCreate":1617157400502,"gmtModify":1634522352716,"author":{"id":"3574754394074573","authorId":"3574754394074573","name":"Ngansee","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5592622e25c1a3d93c1476af2d6f8035","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false},"themes":[],"htmlText":"[微笑] relatively new investor or someone who's been putting your money to work in the market for five decades, there's always something new or unforeseen happening that keeps things interesting.
\n
In 2021, it's been the rise of the Reddit trader.
\n
\n
Beginning in mid-January, retail investors -- mostly millennials who are relatively new to investing -- on Reddit's WallStreetBets (WSB) community chatroom began banding together to buy shares and out-of-the-money call options in highly short-sold stocks. Short-sellers are investors who are betting against a stock and hoping for its share price to decline. Since gains are capped at 100% while losses are unlimited, short-sellers tend not to stick around if a stock begins to gain a lot of upside momentum.
\n
Reddit's WSB community was able to effect short squeezes in dozens of short-sold stocks. In order for short-sellers to exit their positions, they must buy to cover. Buying stock only exacerbates the runaway train effect to the upside.
\n
Since mid-January, movie theater chain AMC Entertainment (NYSE:AMC), video game and accessories retailer GameStop (NYSE:GME), and Canadian marijuana stock Sundial Growers (NASDAQ:SNDL) have been the three most-popular plays of Reddit's retail investors. Unfortunately, they're also three of the worst stocks money can buy.
\n
\n
Here's why it could be lights-out for AMC
\n
AMC's popularity has to do with its perceived-to-be low share price, as well as the reopening of 99% of its theaters by March 26, according to the company. As many folks have also pointed out to me on social media, technical analysis (i.e., chart patterns) is also driving interest.
\n
However, none of these catalysts offers true substance.
\n
For instance, AMC Entertainment was on the verge of bankruptcy in mid-January, and was ultimately saved by issuing close to 165 million new shares of stock and taking on over $400 million in debt capital. The company may have more than $1 billion in cash on hand now, but it's facing aggregate operating losses over the next two years that, by Wall Street's consensus, will come in around a median of $1.7 billion. This is a fancy way of saying that AMC Entertainment almost certainly doesn't have enough cash to make it through the next 12-to-24 months, based on projected losses.
\n
Another thing to keep in mind is that AMC's theaters reopening doesn't mean things are back to normal. A vast majority of its theaters will be operating at limited capacity, and there's always the possibility that coronavirus variants lead to certain cities, counties, or states scaling back their reopening plans.
\n
But maybe the biggest slap in the face for shareholders is that AMC executives pocketed $8.3 million in bonuses just a month after stepping back from the bankruptcy ledge for their \"extraordinary efforts\" to keep AMC afloat during these challenging times.
\n
If you still need one more damning reason to avoid AMC like the plague, here it is: The model is being disrupted. Both AT&T's WarnerMedia and Walt Disney are releasing new movies in 2021 on their respective streaming platforms (HBO Max and Disney+) the same day they'll hit theaters. The growth heyday for movie chains is over, and so are AMC's chances for success, in my view.
\n
\n
Game over for GameStop?
\n
Even though it's the stock that began the Reddit frenzy, GameStop is not a company that any investors should desire to own at its current valuation.
\n
The primary buy thesis for GameStop has been its high level of short interest. When the short squeeze began in mid-January, the company's short interest, relative to float, was by far the highest on Wall Street. It's come down substantially since then, but GameStop's share price has not.
\n
If I could grasp at straws and perhaps find one shred of good news to share, it's that the company's e-commerce sales have been soaring of late. During the 2020 holiday season, digital gaming sales rose by 309%. But here's the kicker: Even with a more-than-quadrupling in e-commerce sales, total sales during the holiday season still declined by 3.1%. That's primarily because GameStop shuttered 11% of its stores between the 2019 and 2020 holiday seasons.
\n
The plain-as-day issue here is that GameStop waited far too long to shift its operating focus to digital gaming. With fewer people trading in or buying used games, which used to be GameStop's high-margin, bread-and-butter growth driver, GameStop's only recourse is to attempt to backpedal its way back into the profit column. This means closing hundreds of stores annually to reduce expenses. But in spite of these precipitous closures, GameStop is likely looking at its fourth-consecutive annual loss in 2021.
\n
While it may not be game over for GameStop, the company's glory days are long gone. Its market cap today is roughly two times higher than its previous all-time high set back in 2007. The thing is, revenue has gone nowhere, and the company has pushed from recurring profits to ongoing losses. There's no way to logically justify this valuation.
\n
\n
Sundial might go up in smoke
\n
Finally, there's Sundial Growers, which I believe is the worst marijuana stock money can buy.
\n
Similar to GameStop and AMC, Sundial has been buoyed by the Reddit crowd for its high short interest and the lure of its penny stock share price. Canadian pot stocks have also received a boost following the election of Joe Biden as President and Democrats retaking the Senate by the slimmest of majorities. There's hope that cannabis legalization in the U.S. would allow Canadian players like Sundial to enter the more lucrative U.S. market.
\n
But if there's one thing tenured investors are acutely familiar with, it's that next-big-thing investments always have losers. Sundial looks like one of those losing investment.
\n
To begin with, Sundial just might be the worst share-based diluter I've seen in years. Since the end of September, Sundial has boosted its cash on hand to $719 million Canadian, but has done so by issuing more than 1.15 billion shares (yes, with a 'b') through a combination of direct share offerings, debt-to-equity swaps, and at-the-market issuances. Were this not enough, its board approved another $1 billion (that's U.S.) mixed-shelf offering. In theory, Sundial could issue hundreds of millions of additional shares.
\n
Because of its 1.66 billion outstanding shares, Sundial has virtually no chance of ever generating a meaningful per-share profit, and it probably runs the risk of being delisted if it falls back below $1 a share. Sundial could enact a reverse split to bump up its share price and shrink its outstanding share count, but companies that utilize reverse splits are historically viewed as struggling businesses.
\n
What's more, Sundial isn't anywhere near profitability, and investors are paying close to $1.9 billion for it, excluding cash. That's close to 38 times sales for a company that's lagging the vast majority of its Canadian and U.S. peers.
\n
AMC, GameStop, and Sundial might be today's buzzy stocks, but they lack substance and have little long-term staying power. That makes all three terrible buys.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Why AMC, GameStop, and Sundial Are 3 of the Worst Stocks to Buy
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nWhy AMC, GameStop, and Sundial Are 3 of the Worst Stocks to Buy\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-03-22 23:30 GMT+8 Motley Fool \n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Don't let the Reddit frenzy lure you into buying terrible businesses.\nWhether you're a relatively new investor or someone who's been putting your money to work in the market for five decades, there's ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"SNDL":"SNDL Inc.","GME":"游戏驿站","AMC":"AMC院线"},"source_url":"https://www.fool.com/investing/2021/03/22/amc-gamestop-and-sundial-3-of-worst-stocks-to-buy/","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"2121120348","content_text":"Don't let the Reddit frenzy lure you into buying terrible businesses.\nWhether you're a relatively new investor or someone who's been putting your money to work in the market for five decades, there's always something new or unforeseen happening that keeps things interesting.\nIn 2021, it's been the rise of the Reddit trader.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nBeginning in mid-January, retail investors -- mostly millennials who are relatively new to investing -- on Reddit's WallStreetBets (WSB) community chatroom began banding together to buy shares and out-of-the-money call options in highly short-sold stocks. That makes all three terrible buys.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":193,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":359699443,"gmtCreate":1616388864682,"gmtModify":1634526101316,"author":{"id":"3574754394074573","authorId":"3574754394074573","name":"Ngansee","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5592622e25c1a3d93c1476af2d6f8035","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false},"themes":[],"htmlText":"[微笑] ","listText":"[微笑] ","text":"[微笑]","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":2,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/359699443","repostId":"1142823107","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1142823107","pubTimestamp":1616384869,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1142823107?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-03-22 11:47","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Australia's Crown Resorts receives $6.2 billion proposal from Blackstone","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1142823107","media":"reuters","summary":"(Reuters) - Troubled Australian casino operator Crown Resorts Ltd on Monday said it had received a c","content":"
(Reuters) - Troubled Australian casino operator Crown Resorts Ltd on Monday said it had received a conditional buyout proposal from U.S. private equity giant Blackstone, sending its shares 19% higher.
\n
The indicative proposal comes as casinos and gaming operators around the world have seen values plunge as coronavirus lockdowns battered earnings, putting them on the radar of cashed-up investment firms.
\n
Crown has suffered more than most after a year-long regulatory inquiry aired allegations of money laundering and governance failures at the company, leading to the loss of its gambling licence for its new A$2.2 billion Sydney casino last month.
\n
Since then, top executives including its chief executive resigned, paving the way for Crown to repair its reputation and regain its licence with ex-federal communications minister and Chairman Helen Coonan at the helm of the overhaul.
\n
Crown said Blackstone’s proposal was A$11.85 per share, a premium of 20.2% to the company’s last closing price, and valuing it at A$8.02 billion ($6.2 billion).
\n
Its shares jumped to A$11.750 following news of the proposal on Monday, their highest in a year.

As of December 31, 2020, over 130 tertiary institutions were paying for it.At this point, it is hard to predict what the end of the pandemic would have on the company’s operating results. The Strategy and Market OpportunityCoursera is one of the most disruptive firms in the world. It is better to wait for Coursera to turn a profit before investing in the company.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":397,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":352557007,"gmtCreate":1616987785409,"gmtModify":1634523280272,"author":{"id":"3574754394074573","authorId":"3574754394074573","name":"Ngansee","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5592622e25c1a3d93c1476af2d6f8035","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Tiger Brokers(TIGR)$[难过] ","listText":"$Tiger Brokers(TIGR)$[难过] ","text":"$Tiger Brokers(TIGR)$[难过]","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a781228a21497a66edd585844c55d0e7","width":"1242","height":"2151"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":8,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/352557007","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":410,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":359699443,"gmtCreate":1616388864682,"gmtModify":1634526101316,"author":{"id":"3574754394074573","authorId":"3574754394074573","name":"Ngansee","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5592622e25c1a3d93c1476af2d6f8035","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false},"themes":[],"htmlText":"[微笑] ","listText":"[微笑] ","text":"[微笑]","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":2,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/359699443","repostId":"1142823107","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1142823107","pubTimestamp":1616384869,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1142823107?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-03-22 11:47","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Australia's Crown Resorts receives $6.2 billion proposal from Blackstone","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1142823107","media":"reuters","summary":"(Reuters) - Troubled Australian casino operator Crown Resorts Ltd on Monday said it had received a c","content":"
Investors that got used to earning over 80% return on the stock in the past two years must be anxious about shares spinning their wheels for the past several months. The stock has been down about 16% from the all-time high, and 10% off early September levels.
\n
To be clear, the recent lack of traction could be justified by the stock's outstanding performance prior to September 2020, and its need to consolidate (i.e., wait for much of the rest of the market to catch up) before climbing higher. While Apple takes a breather, I think investors could position themselves in the stock now and benefit over a multi-year period.
\n
Fundamentals look solid
\n
I challenge an unbiased analyst or investor to make a strong bearish case against Apple's fundamentals and growth opportunities:
\n
\n
The iPhone's 5G upgrade cycle has been questioned, particularly after reports of soft demand for the smaller 12 mini. But otherwise, the Pro and Pro Max versions helped to lift iPhone sales in the holiday quarter substantially (see graph below), after a pitiful fiscal fourth quarter. Maybe more importantly, upcoming versions of Apple's smartphones will probably see increased demand as 5G networks expand across global markets.
\n
\n
Source: DM Martins Research, data from company reports
\n
\n
Doubling service revenues in five years, between 2016 and 2020, was quite a feat. Off a much higher base, Apple could be ready to do it again through 2025, at least according to one analyst. I would not doubt it, since (1) the iPhone installed base is much larger now,at over 1 billion active devices, (2) new services keep getting added to the portfolio, even if some may not have caught on yet, and (3) the Apple One bundle could serve as a nudge for increased user penetration.
\n
The wearables revolution is probably still in the earlier innings. But even an increase in share buybacks and dividends could also be on the table.
\n
\n
What best explains the funk
\n
In addition to an old-fashioned pullback, following two very strong years of performance, I believe that there are two other key factors putting pressure on Apple shares.
\n
The first is rising yields. Higher interest rates can impact a company and its stock in many different ways (higher interest expenses, disincentive to borrow, etc.), but the most relevant is probably market sentiment. Just ahead of the reopening of the US economy and others around the world to follow,it has made more sense to be exposed to cyclical stocks since the announcement of the first fully-tested COVID-19 vaccine. Also, with yields rising, soon some might start to consider fixed income a viable investment once again, to the detriment of growth stocks.
\n
Data by YCharts
\n
The last time that the 30-year yield climbed substantially over a short period of time was in 2012-2013: up from 2.4% to 4.0% in about 18 months (see graph above, divide index level by 1,000 to arrive at rate). Notice that Apple traded opposite to the yield movement in that case, dropping in value when rates increased, and vice-versa. Worth noting, the stock began to recover about six months before yields peaked.
\n
The second possible explanation for weakness in Apple is tough comps in 2021, particularly in certain segments that benefited from the stay-at-home economy. The graph below shows that product categories once considered to be in their mature or declining life cycles, namely laptops and tablets, came back to life last year. It is unlikely that 2021 will be as good a period for either.
\n
Source: DM Martins Research, data from company reports
\n
Attractive below $120
\n
While short-term headwinds can continue to exist, I believe that an investor with a multi-year time horizon in mind will probably benefit from buying Apple at or below $120 per share. The graph below shows that buying the stock on a 15%-plus dip has historically produced annual returns that are 17 percentage points higher than if shares had been bought within 10% of the all-time high.
\n
Fortunately, for aspiring Apple shareholders, the stock ended the trading session on March 19 at $119.99 – a tease for anyone awaiting an entry point below $120. While stocks undergoing a correction can behave erratically in the near term, a bullish move on Apple today seems quite reasonable to me.
\n
Source: DM Martins Research, data from company reports
","source":"seekingalpha","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Apple: The Deeper It Digs, The Better The Opportunity
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nApple: The Deeper It Digs, The Better The Opportunity\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-03-22 23:06 GMT+8 seekingalpha\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Summary\n\nApple has been struggling to find its footing, as rising yields and tough segment comps have put a lid on the stock price.\nHowever, business fundamentals remain quite solid.
This is a fancy way of saying that AMC Entertainment almost certainly doesn't have enough cash to make it through the next 12-to-24 months, based on projected losses.\nAnother thing to keep in mind is that AMC's theaters reopening doesn't mean things are back to normal. A vast majority of its theaters will be operating at limited capacity, and there's always the possibility that coronavirus variants lead to certain cities, counties, or states scaling back their reopening plans.\nBut maybe the biggest slap in the face for shareholders is that AMC executives pocketed $8.3 million in bonuses just a month after stepping back from the bankruptcy ledge for their \"extraordinary efforts\" to keep AMC afloat during these challenging times.\nIf you still need one more damning reason to avoid AMC like the plague, here it is: The model is being disrupted. Both AT&T's WarnerMedia and Walt Disney are releasing new movies in 2021 on their respective streaming platforms (HBO Max and Disney+) the same day they'll hit theaters. The growth heyday for movie chains is over, and so are AMC's chances for success, in my view.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nGame over for GameStop?\nEven though it's the stock that began the Reddit frenzy, GameStop is not a company that any investors should desire to own at its current valuation.\nThe primary buy thesis for GameStop has been its high level of short interest. When the short squeeze began in mid-January, the company's short interest, relative to float, was by far the highest on Wall Street. It's come down substantially since then, but GameStop's share price has not.\nIf I could grasp at straws and perhaps find one shred of good news to share, it's that the company's e-commerce sales have been soaring of late. During the 2020 holiday season, digital gaming sales rose by 309%. But here's the kicker: Even with a more-than-quadrupling in e-commerce sales, total sales during the holiday season still declined by 3.1%. That's primarily because GameStop shuttered 11% of its stores between the 2019 and 2020 holiday seasons.\nThe plain-as-day issue here is that GameStop waited far too long to shift its operating focus to digital gaming. With fewer people trading in or buying used games, which used to be GameStop's high-margin, bread-and-butter growth driver, GameStop's only recourse is to attempt to backpedal its way back into the profit column. This means closing hundreds of stores annually to reduce expenses. But in spite of these precipitous closures, GameStop is likely looking at its fourth-consecutive annual loss in 2021.\nWhile it may not be game over for GameStop, the company's glory days are long gone. Its market cap today is roughly two times higher than its previous all-time high set back in 2007. The thing is, revenue has gone nowhere, and the company has pushed from recurring profits to ongoing losses. There's no way to logically justify this valuation.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nSundial might go up in smoke\nFinally, there's Sundial Growers, which I believe is the worst marijuana stock money can buy.\nSimilar to GameStop and AMC, Sundial has been buoyed by the Reddit crowd for its high short interest and the lure of its penny stock share price. Canadian pot stocks have also received a boost following the election of Joe Biden as President and Democrats retaking the Senate by the slimmest of majorities. There's hope that cannabis legalization in the U.S. would allow Canadian players like Sundial to enter the more lucrative U.S. market.\nBut if there's one thing tenured investors are acutely familiar with, it's that next-big-thing investments always have losers. Sundial looks like one of those losing investment.\nTo begin with, Sundial just might be the worst share-based diluter I've seen in years. In theory, Sundial could issue hundreds of millions of additional shares.\nBecause of its 1.66 billion outstanding shares, Sundial has virtually no chance of ever generating a meaningful per-share profit, and it probably runs the risk of being delisted if it falls back below $1 a share. Sundial could enact a reverse split to bump up its share price and shrink its outstanding share count, but companies that utilize reverse splits are historically viewed as struggling businesses.\nWhat's more, Sundial isn't anywhere near profitability, and investors are paying close to $1.9 billion for it, excluding cash. That's close to 38 times sales for a company that's lagging the vast majority of its Canadian and U.S. peers.\nAMC, GameStop, and Sundial might be today's buzzy stocks, but they lack substance and have little long-term staying power. That makes all three terrible buys.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":193,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":350281296,"gmtCreate":1616212029815,"gmtModify":1634526706007,"author":{"id":"3574754394074573","authorId":"3574754394074573","name":"Ngansee","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5592622e25c1a3d93c1476af2d6f8035","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false},"themes":[],"htmlText":"💪 [微笑] ","listText":"💪 [微笑] ","text":"💪 [微笑]","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8743f831d585ff0fe2efe0ce0dab543c","width":"1125","height":"2550"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/350281296","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":37,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":356039194,"gmtCreate":1616739237518,"gmtModify":1631885344216,"author":{"id":"3574754394074573","authorId":"3574754394074573","name":"Ngansee","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5592622e25c1a3d93c1476af2d6f8035","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Ford(F)$[微笑] ","listText":"$Ford(F)$[微笑] ","text":"$Ford(F)$[微笑]","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/49b4bbb54e2abfcb2817de4f6439baed","width":"1242","height":"2151"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/356039194","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":237,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":353992457,"gmtCreate":1616452319779,"gmtModify":1634525804083,"author":{"id":"3574754394074573","authorId":"3574754394074573","name":"Ngansee","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5592622e25c1a3d93c1476af2d6f8035","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false},"themes":[],"htmlText":"[惊讶] ","listText":"[惊讶] ","text":"[惊讶]","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c2bcd7133bec370a4971853563e9d131","width":"1125","height":"2713"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/353992457","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":299,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":350288136,"gmtCreate":1616212156125,"gmtModify":1634526705885,"author":{"id":"3574754394074573","authorId":"3574754394074573","name":"Ngansee","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5592622e25c1a3d93c1476af2d6f8035","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false},"themes":[],"htmlText":"[微笑] ","listText":"[微笑] ","text":"[微笑]","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/350288136","repostId":"1191190020","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1191190020","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Stock Market Quotes, Business News, Financial News, Trading Ideas, and Stock Research by Professionals","home_visible":0,"media_name":"Benzinga","id":"1052270027","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d08bf7808052c0ca9deb4e944cae32aa"},"pubTimestamp":1616143711,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1191190020?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-03-19 16:48","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Apple Warns App Makers: Don't Even Think About Unauthorized Tracking","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1191190020","media":"Benzinga","summary":"Apple Inc. While he has maintained his bullish rating on the shares intact, he upped the ante and set a Street-high price target of $175 apiece this week – for upside of over 40% from current levels.
\n
Today, the Apple Maven looks closer into why the analyst believes Apple is such a strong buy today. I then add the perspective of another bullish expert, who believes Apple’s market value is heading to $3 trillion in the foreseeable future.
\n
Not all about the iPhone
\n
Apple has been most closely associated with iPhones in the past decade and a half. But this analyst supports his bullish thesis on factors that do not always make the headlines: services and wearables.
\n
Here is what Evercore currently sees:
\n
\n “A clear path to $100 billion in services revenue by fiscal 2025 and $70 billion for wearables. The growth should help drive margin expansion and help smooth out the cyclical nature of the hardware business.”\n
\n
Should the research shop be right about the services opportunity, Apple would effectively double segment revenues in five years, as it did between 2016 and 2020. I recently argued that the feat could be achieved, especially with the introduction of new service offerings (that are either too nascent or have yet to caught on, such as Fitness+ and Arcade+) and the launch of the Apple One bundle.
\n
On the wearables side, growing to $70 billion by 2025 would mean more than doubling fiscal 2020 revenues of $31 billion. There are a couple of ways that Apple could reach this goal, and the company would probably need to execute on all fronts at the same time to be successful:
\n
\n
Grow market penetration in smartwatches;
\n
Widen the product portfolio in earphones and home devices;
\n
Introduce category-defining products, such as mixed reality headsets.
\n
\n
Wrapping up the bull case, Evercore mentions two other factors. First, share buybacks could accelerate, as Apple tries to put its cash pile to use in a low-interest environment. Second, the research company sees valuation multiples staying higher for longer, as Apple earns a consumer goods premium.
\n
The usual suspects: 5G super cycle, Apple Car
\n
On the path to $175 per share, Evercore did not forget to mention some of the trendier, high-flying growth opportunities – among them, the Apple Car. But when it comes to seeing the longer-term trends, Wedbush’s Dan Ives is probably the analyst that relies on them the most to support his own $175 price target (or $225, under his best-case scenario).
\n
According to Wedbush, the “super cycle party” should continue with the launch of the iPhone 13, later in 2021. While he has maintained his bullish rating on the shares intact, he upped the ante and set a Street-high price target of $175 apiece this week – for upside of over 40% from current levels.\nToday, the Apple Maven looks closer into why the analyst believes Apple is such a strong buy today. I then add the perspective of another bullish expert, who believes Apple’s market value is heading to $3 trillion in the foreseeable future.\nNot all about the iPhone\nApple has been most closely associated with iPhones in the past decade and a half. But this analyst supports his bullish thesis on factors that do not always make the headlines: services and wearables.\nHere is what Evercore currently sees:\n\n “A clear path to $100 billion in services revenue by fiscal 2025 and $70 billion for wearables. The growth should help drive margin expansion and help smooth out the cyclical nature of the hardware business.”\n\nShould the research shop be right about the services opportunity, Apple would effectively double segment revenues in five years, as it did between 2016 and 2020. I recently argued that the feat could be achieved, especially with the introduction of new service offerings (that are either too nascent or have yet to caught on, such as Fitness+ and Arcade+) and the launch of the Apple One bundle.\nOn the wearables side, growing to $70 billion by 2025 would mean more than doubling fiscal 2020 revenues of $31 billion. There are a couple of ways that Apple could reach this goal, and the company would probably need to execute on all fronts at the same time to be successful:\n\nGrow market penetration in smartwatches;\nWiden the product portfolio in earphones and home devices;\nIntroduce category-defining products,such as mixed reality headsets.\n\nWrapping up the bull case, Evercore mentions two other factors. First, share buybacks could accelerate, as Apple tries to put its cash pile to use in a low-interest environment. Second, the research company sees valuation multiples staying higher for longer, as Apple earns a consumer goods premium.\nThe usual suspects: 5G super cycle, Apple Car\nOn the path to $175 per share, Evercore did not forget to mention some of the trendier, high-flying growth opportunities – among them, the Apple Car. But when it comes to seeing the longer-term trends, Wedbush’s Dan Ives is probably the analyst that relies on them the most to support his own $175 price target (or $225, under his best-case scenario).\nAccording to Wedbush, the “super cycle party” should continue with the launch of the iPhone 13, later in 2021. The analyst believes that roughly 40% of the global iPhone installed base is due for an upgrade.\nOn the electric vehicle front, the opportunity could reach $5 trillion over the next decade. Wedbush thinks that Apple could announce a production partner this summer, and soon kickstart its fight for share in this promising new market.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":41,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0}],"lives":[]}
