Frankly, it looks like a good time to establish a position in the children’s gaming/social media company, with millions of programmers and millions of worlds to explore.</p><p><b>Covid Considerations</b></p><p>Roblox management is quick to note that social distancing restrictions were somewhat of a boon for the company. Understandably, this will cause some hesitant investors sitting on the fence to err on the side of caution. The idea being that normalization will bring a reduction in platform interaction and revenues.</p><p>However, the metrics tell a more nuanced story. As CFOMichael Guthrie notes: “As those restrictions ease, we expect the rates of growth in 2021 will be well below the rates in 2020, however, we believe we will see absolute growth in most of our core metrics for the full year.”</p><p>Indeed, based on certain metrics there is reason for concern. First quarter daily average users (DAUs) tallied at between 37.6 million to 39.6 million users. This represented year-over-year growth of 59-68%. Hours engaged increased between 76-85% in the same period.</p><p>The company gave guidance that it expects DAUs to between 34.5 million and 36.3 million in the second quarter. And it anticipates that hours of engagement could drop as low as 7.6 billion during Q2. This is a negative trend in absolute terms from the previous year’s period. Further, the number of DAUs and hours of engagement are absolutely lower than in the first quarter.</p><p>That doesn’t seem encouraging. However, there is reason to remain positive. Actually, there are between 350 and 372 million of them. That’s because the company anticipates Q2 revenues between $350 and $372 million in Q2. That’s more than in Q1 which had more activity, and YoY growth of as high as 86%</p><p>To me, that doesn’t look like the dreaded Covid hangover.</p><p><b>Unique Platform</b></p><p>To say that Roblox is a game is fairly vague. After all, a game could be just about anything. What Roblox is is a 3D virtual universe built by users who share the space for purposes of entertainment and socializing.</p><p>A user has his or her own avatar which can travel across the multiple spaces that the platform’s 8 million developers have created. The platform includes immersive experiences in which users interact with other users around the world in various ways. The platform counted 20 million experiences by the end of 2020, 13 million of which had been explored. That means there’s plenty left to explore and develop even if nothing further were to be created.</p><p>Those same users spent over 2.5 hours per day on the platform and explored 20 experiences each month in the same period.</p><p><b>Growth</b></p><p>Roblox’s CFO was also very vocal about the growth strategy the company will pursue in the coming year: “We also expect that by expanding further into older age demographics and growing internationally in regions like western Europe and east Asia, we will have significant opportunities to grow our business at higher rates again starting in 2022 and beyond.”</p><p>In fact, some analysts believe that this could bring Roblox’sDAU to 70 millionby 2024 including China, where Roblox is planning a joint venture with<b>TencentMusic Entertainment Group</b>(NYSE:<b><u>TME</u></b>). The opportunities from that growth make the company seem far less like a pandemic flash-in-the-pan, and much more like a massive, unique growth target.</p><p>Most pundits are concerned over whether the current time presents the best entry prospect or not. The global economy is improving, too.</p>\n<p>Evenhigher interest rates are helping&nbsp;GE stock these days. GE&nbsp;has a large employee pension obligation, and higher rates means it can earn more money on pension assets. More earnings from the money already set aside to pay benefits means less cash will need to be added in the future.</p>\n<p>Those topics, and more, will be discussed at the meeting. Here’s what to watch for when management talks about the year ahead:</p>\n<p>When GE&nbsp;hosted its last outlook meetinga little more than a year ago, management expected toearn about 55 centsa share in 2020. That was before Covid-19.</p>\n<p>But the pandemic’s impact was difficult to predict. GE’s early estimate was that Covid might hurtcash flow bya few hundred million dollars. It turned out far worse than anyone imagined.</p>\n<p>Covid-19 ended up decimating demand for commercial air travel. GE’s largest business is tied to jet engine manufacturing so the pandemic hit the company harder than most. GEeked outa 1 cent per-share profit. More important, GE managed to generate positive free cash flow of about $600 million for the full year.</p>\n<p>In 2021, GE believesit can generateabout 20 cents in per-share earnings and about $3.5 billion in free cash flow from its industrial businesses. That guidance was given when the company reported fourth-quarter results.</p>\n<p>On Wednesday, analysts will check out just how conservative that guidance is. A key question that they’ll want answered: How much improvement in commercial air travel is driving GE’s numbers? Things are getting better, but slowly. Flightsare still off about 50% from this time last year, but they were down 65% only a couple of months ago.</p>\n<p>In 2020, GE’s balance sheet andthe pending sale of its healthcare business, Biopharma,toDanaher(DHR) was significant. This year, analysts will ask management about another deal—onethat would combine GE’s jet-leasing businesswithAerCap(AER). That agreement could dramatically shrink the size of GE Capital and provide the company with another source of cash. So far, GE has declined to comment on deal status or structure.</p>\n<p>The healthcare deal helped GE reduce debt. AnAerCapdeal would simplify the company’s balance sheet more. That’s important for both investors and analysts. “The subtext of the event will be that the&nbsp;GE&nbsp;story is simplifying as balance sheet and contingent liability risks diminish,” wrote Wolfe Research analystNigel Coein a report previewing GE’s outlook event. GE Capital still has some issues, such as poorly performinglong term-care insurancecontracts. Coe wants to see GE Capital fund the problems instead of taking cash flow from the industrial businesses.</p>\n<p>Coe rates shares Buy and has a $14 price target. RBC analystDeane Drayalso rates shares Buy. His price target is $13 a share. He expects more granular guidance by business segment as well as cash flow generation throughout the year.</p>\n<p>GE generates most of its cash flow in the second half of the year. The company sells a lot of expensive equipment. Businesses like to take delivery late in the year. That way they preserve cash as long as possible and still earn a tax deduction. “For tax purposes….all equipment placed in service during the taxable year is treated as placed in service at the midpoint of the year,” accounting expert Robert Willens tells<i>Barron’s.</i></p>\n<p>In one key segment, GE’s renewable energy business, Barclays analyst Julian Mitchell is looking for management to lay out the path to consistent profitability. “The three main pieces inside Renewables have very different operating margin rates,” explains Mitchell. Onshore wind is higher margin in North America than overseas. One challenge for GE is to improve international profit margins. Offshore wind is lower margin, but higher growth. Mitchell wants to hear about new orders. Mitchell, like Dray and Coe, rates GE shares Buy. His target is $13 a share.</p>\n<p>Overall, the Street like GE stock. Well, at the least, it seems the CEO and his wife didn't<i>sell</i>the shares. Judging from recent experience,that would probably have been taken as bad news. Rather, the&nbsp;<i>Journal</i>&nbsp;reports that the transfers were \"gifts ... from two trusts for which Mr. Yuan and his wife are co-trustees.\"</p>\n<p>The&nbsp;<i>Journal</i>&nbsp;added that, according to a Zoom spokeswoman, \"the distributions were made in accordance with the terms of Eric Yuan and his wife's trusts, and are consistent with the Yuans' typical estate planning practices.\"</p>\n<p><b>Now what</b></p>\n<p>And that sounds rather innocuous. Perhaps more important than the actual share transfer is what appears to have happened to the shares themselves upon their transfer to owners other than the Yuans. Secondary listings in Hong Kong have been a popular route for Chinese companies that are already listed on Wall Street.\nNio, Li Auto and Xpeng have had huge rallies so far. Nio is up over 1,000% in the last 12 months. Xpeng’s share price has nearly doubled since its initial public offering in August.\nAll three automakers have also released their forecast for vehicle deliveries for the first quarter.\nNio said it expects to deliver 20,000 to 20,500 cars in the March quarter, higher than the December quarter. That will take its share price to about $112, based on recent levels, reducing the shares outstanding to about 1.1 billion from a little less than9 billion.</p>\n<p>The question is why? Most companiesspit their stock, creating a lower share price and more shares outstanding, as stock prices rise over time. Companies appear to like to have a stock price at a certain level, following the Goldilocks principle of not too high and not too low.</p>\n<p>That appears to be the reason for this reverse split, too. A scan of GE’s peers shows share prices in the $100 to $200 range and share counts in the hundreds of millions. GE simply looks like an outlier.</p>\n<p>Investors like splits. They take them as a sign that things are getting better and that management expects prices to rise in the near future. Reverse splits, on the other hand, can make investors nervous. They can be interpreted as a sign the business is getting worse.</p>\n<p>The academic data appears to bear that fear out. A<i>Journal of Finance</i>study partly authored by Nobel laureate Eugene Fama found that splits are favorable and that reverse splits are ominous for one- and three-year forward stock returns. Splitters outperform the market and reverse splitters lag behind it.</p>\n<p>But there are a few caveats. First, the data set included almost 6,000 stock splits, but fewer than 100 reverse splits. Reverse splits are very rare. It’s tough to make a blanket statement from a small data set.</p>\n<p>What is more, many academic papers look at old data. The Fama data set includes stocks trading in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. A lot has changed in the marketplace since then.</p>\n<p>One common theme of stock-split studies, for instance, is a split’s impact on overall liquidity. A lower share price is simply within reach of more shareholders. More investors means more stock trading on any given day. That can make shares less volatile and less risky.</p>\n<p>Now, though, brokers offer share “slices” for as little as $5, essentially giving stock exposure to anyone who wants it, despite the absolute level any stock trades at.</p>\n<p>Concern about a deteriorating business may not be a factor with GE’s reverse split. The company isn’t what it once was, but that is old news. GE stock is down roughly 75% from its all-time high, but the slide happened long ago. CEOLarry Culpwas brought in during 2018 to turn around struggling operations.</p>\n<p>A lot of progress has been made. GE has paid back more than $70 billion in debt over the past few years. Deals such as the jet-leasing sale toAerCap(AER), the sale of the biopharma business toDanaher(DHR) and sales of stock in the oil-services providerBaker Hughes(BKR) are making the reduction possible.</p>\n<p>Despite the pandemic, which devastated demand for travel and the jet-aircraft engines GE makes, the stock is trading at the highest level since Culp took over. Coming into Wednesday, shares were up about30% year to date, far better than comparable gains of theS&amp;P 500andDow Jones Industrial Average.</p>\n<p>Investors are focusing now on what GE said about its future. GEmaintained its forecastsfor about 20 cents in per-share earnings and about $3.5 billion in free cash flow for 2021. Management says there will be modest growth in the key aviation business.</p>\n<p>That limited growth would return GE Aviation’s sales to levels realized around 2017, far from their pre-pandemic level in 201. That looks like a cautious call now that vaccines are rolling out across the globe, but Culp is fine with that.</p>\n<p>““We won’t be offended if [anyone] calls us conservative,” he told<i>Barron’s</i>.</p>\n<p>Being conservative is probably the right move for GE given all the internal and industrywide challenges the company has faced in recent years.</p>\n<p>The stock split is neither conservative nor aggressive. But the multibillion-dollar deal and theoutlookfor the post-pandemic industrial landscape take a back seat to the conglomerate’s plan for a reverse stock split.\nGeneral Electric (ticker: GE) is proposing to give investors one share for every eight they now hold. That will take its share price to about $112, based on recent levels, reducing the shares outstanding to about 1.1 billion from a little less than9 billion.\nThe question is why? Most companiesspit their stock, creating a lower share price and more shares outstanding, as stock prices rise over time. Companies appear to like to have a stock price at a certain level, following the Goldilocks principle of not too high and not too low.\nThat appears to be the reason for this reverse split, too. A scan of GE’s peers shows share prices in the $100 to $200 range and share counts in the hundreds of millions. GE simply looks like an outlier.\nInvestors like splits. They take them as a sign that things are getting better and that management expects prices to rise in the near future. Reverse splits, on the other hand, can make investors nervous. They can be interpreted as a sign the business is getting worse.\nThe academic data appears to bear that fear out. AJournal of Financestudy partly authored by Nobel laureate Eugene Fama found that splits are favorable and that reverse splits are ominous for one- and three-year forward stock returns. Splitters outperform the market and reverse splitters lag behind it.\nBut there are a few caveats. First, the data set included almost 6,000 stock splits, but fewer than 100 reverse splits. Reverse splits are very rare. It’s tough to make a blanket statement from a small data set.\nWhat is more, many academic papers look at old data. The Fama data set includes stocks trading in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. A lot has changed in the marketplace since then.\nOne common theme of stock-split studies, for instance, is a split’s impact on overall liquidity. A lower share price is simply within reach of more shareholders. More investors means more stock trading on any given day. That can make shares less volatile and less risky.\nNow, though, brokers offer share “slices” for as little as $5, essentially giving stock exposure to anyone who wants it, despite the absolute level any stock trades at.\nConcern about a deteriorating business may not be a factor with GE’s reverse split. The company isn’t what it once was, but that is old news. GE stock is down roughly 75% from its all-time high, but the slide happened long ago. CEOLarry Culpwas brought in during 2018 to turn around struggling operations.\nA lot of progress has been made. GE has paid back more than $70 billion in debt over the past few years. Deals such as the jet-leasing sale toAerCap(AER), the sale of the biopharma business toDanaher(DHR) and sales of stock in the oil-services providerBaker Hughes(BKR) are making the reduction possible.\nDespite the pandemic, which devastated demand for travel and the jet-aircraft engines GE makes, the stock is trading at the highest level since Culp took over. Coming into Wednesday, shares were up about30% year to date, far better than comparable gains of theS&P 500andDow Jones Industrial Average.\nInvestors are focusing now on what GE said about its future. GEmaintained its forecastsfor about 20 cents in per-share earnings and about $3.5 billion in free cash flow for 2021. Management says there will be modest growth in the key aviation business.\nThat limited growth would return GE Aviation’s sales to levels realized around 2017, far from their pre-pandemic level in 201. That looks like a cautious call now that vaccines are rolling out across the globe, but Culp is fine with that.\n““We won’t be offended if [anyone] calls us conservative,” he toldBarron’s.\nBeing conservative is probably the right move for GE given all the internal and industrywide challenges the company has faced in recent years.\nThe stock split is neither conservative nor aggressive. But it is another sign things are changing and that GE wants to be viewed as an industrial conglomerate, and not as the hybrid of manufacturing and finance the company became during the 1990s and
