Here are 3 picks that are a better value with more upside potential.","content":"<p><b>Rivian Automotive</b>(NASDAQ:RIVN)has hit the market with a bang, trading more than 30% over its IPO price and now sporting a market cap near $100 billion. This is despite only producing about 15 vehicles per week right now. The company has a bright future, but investors looking for any value in&nbsp;electric vehicle stocks&nbsp;should probably look elsewhere right now.</p>\n<p>Three of our Fool.com contributors ,Travis Hoium, Howard Smith, and Daniel Foelber think&nbsp;<b>General Motors</b>(NYSE:GM),<b>ChargePoint Holdings</b>(NYSE:CHPT), and&nbsp;<b>Lucid Group</b>(NASDAQ:LCID)&nbsp;are all better buys than Rivian today.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/38583e5ca55657c01e76a6eb4bab1782\" tg-width=\"2000\" tg-height=\"1331\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>IMAGE SOURCE: GETTY IMAGES.</span></p>\n<p><b>The leader in autonomous driving</b></p>\n<p><b>Travis Hoium(General Motors):</b>As companies like Rivian get all the headlines in electric vehicles, General Motors is quietly building out the technology and manufacturing capacity totransition entirely to electric vehicles by 2035. That includes 30 EV models that will launch globally by 2025, including cars, trucks, and SUVs.</p>\n<p>But it isn't GM's EV capacity that makes it a better buy than Rivian, it's the company's majority ownership of Cruise, the autonomous ride-sharing company, that provides the most upside. GM is providing Cruise with design and manufacturing capabilities to build autonomous vehicles like the Cruise Origin (shown above), a self-driving shuttle for ride-sharing developed in a partnership between Cruise, GM, and&nbsp;<b>Honda</b>. Cruise is developing autonomous driving hardware and software that go into Origin and eventually a ride-sharing business. GM is also providing funding to build out Cruise's vehicle infrastructure, which could cost many billions of dollars, starting with a $5 billion line of credit to buy Cruise Origins.</p>\n<p>In time, autonomous vehicles could reduce the cost of traveling in cities and even make vehicle ownership obsolete. Cruise is leading the way into this market, and that provides tremendous upside for GM. This may be an old company in the auto industry, but it's making great strategic moves to be a leader in the future of electric and autonomous vehicles.</p>\n<p><b>Picks and shovels</b></p>\n<p><b>Howard Smith(ChargePoint Holdings)</b>:Rivian's public debut&nbsp;generated a lot of excitement for good reason. The company has big backers and reportedly a backlog of orders for both fleets and consumer electric vehicles (EVs). But investors have seen plenty of examples where initial excitement causes a spike in valuation that doesn't always last.</p>\n<p>Another exciting recent event for EV investors was the passage of a federal infrastructure bill that will push $7.5 billion to help build out the charging infrastructure needed for this country to expand EV ownership. ChargePoint Holdings is the leader in that space with more than 118,000 charging ports, including more than 3,700 DC fast chargers. The vast majority of those stations are in the U.S., though the company is also growing its business in Europe where it already has 5,400 charging locations.</p>\n<p>Those federal infrastructure funds will be sent to states that will issue grants to the charging network companies, which will make up the country's network. And that should be a big shot in the arm for ChargePoint as the largest operator in the country. Even prior to the realization of that catalyst, ChargePoint was growing its business beyond what it had predicted before its public debut.</p>\n<p>The company recorded $146 million in revenue&nbsp;for its full fiscal year 2021 that ended Jan. 31, 2021. In its most recently reported quarter ended July 31, 2021, it raised its revenue guidance for its current fiscal year by 15% to a range of $225 million to $235 million. At the midpoint, that would represent annual revenue growth of 57.5%, even without the added catalyst of federal funds.</p>\n<p>ChargePoint generated its own excitement when it announced it would begin trading publicly last year. The stock is almost 50% off the peak price reached at the end of Dec. 2020 prior to the closing of its merger with the&nbsp;special purpose acquisition company (SPAC)&nbsp;that brought it public. It wouldn't be surprising to see Rivian's stock fluctuate as well. But for Rivian -- and all the other EV makers -- to be successful, there will need to be charging infrastructure in place. That makes ChargePoint a \"picks and shovels\" type of investment for the rapidly growing EV sector. That could make it a better investment today than adding to Rivian's early hype.</p>\n<p><b>Lucid is proving it can compete against the best in the business</b></p>\n<p><b>Daniel Foelber(Lucid Group):</b>Rivian's roughly $120 billion market capitalization is raising eyebrows considering the company is relatively unproven. Similarly, Lucid Motors has received its fair share of criticism for sporting a $65 billion market cap just over a month into the&nbsp;mass production of its Lucid Air Dream Edition luxury sedan.</p>\n<p>Rivian and Lucid are pricey, and it's hard to say which is the better value now. Rivian has received backing from&nbsp;<b>Amazon</b>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<b>Ford</b>&nbsp;as it targets the higher-end electric lifestyle truck and electric delivery van markets. Similar to&nbsp;<b>Tesla</b>(NASDAQ:TSLA), the company is bypassing the dealership framework of traditional automakers by&nbsp;marketing directly to consumers. Rivian also plans to build its own charging network to make electricity more accessible in remote places where a core part of its outdoor-focused target demographic requires the ability to charge. By comparison,Lucid doesn't feel the need to invest in its own charging network, choosing instead to save money by partnering with the growing list of third-party charging providers.</p>\n<p>Rivian has already faced delivery delays due to the global chip shortage. By comparison, Lucid has quickly built a&nbsp;reputation for delivering on its promises, having hit all of its major 2021 goals on time. Lucid also has an excellent management team and plenty of cash to fund its 2022 operations.</p>\n<p>Arguably the best reason&nbsp;why there's never been a better time to buy Lucid stock&nbsp;is that the company has achieved incredible engineering feats that&nbsp;rival Tesla-- the undisputed champ in the EV industry. Packing in more battery cells can help improve performance, but Lucid isn't doing that. Instead, it has built a&nbsp;compact battery pack&nbsp;that sports a battery efficiency of 4.5 miles per kilowatt-hour (mi/kWh) of stored energy, which is higher than the Tesla Model S, Jaguar I-Pace, Porsche Taycan, and other competitors. The company has a bright future, but investors looking for any value in electric vehicle stocks should probably look elsewhere right now.\nThree of our Fool.com contributors ,Travis Hoium, Howard Smith, and Daniel Foelber think General Motors(NYSE:GM),ChargePoint Holdings(NYSE:CHPT), and Lucid Group(NASDAQ:LCID) are all better buys than Rivian today.\nIMAGE SOURCE: GETTY IMAGES.\nThe leader in autonomous driving\nTravis Hoium(General Motors):As companies like Rivian get all the headlines in electric vehicles, General Motors is quietly building out the technology and manufacturing capacity totransition entirely to electric vehicles by 2035. That includes 30 EV models that will launch globally by 2025, including cars, trucks, and SUVs.\nBut it isn't GM's EV capacity that makes it a better buy than Rivian, it's the company's majority ownership of Cruise, the autonomous ride-sharing company, that provides the most upside. GM is providing Cruise with design and manufacturing capabilities to build autonomous vehicles like the Cruise Origin (shown above), a self-driving shuttle for ride-sharing developed in a partnership between Cruise, GM, and Honda. Cruise is developing autonomous driving hardware and software that go into Origin and eventually a ride-sharing business. GM is also providing funding to build out Cruise's vehicle infrastructure, which could cost many billions of dollars, starting with a $5 billion line of credit to buy Cruise Origins.\nIn time, autonomous vehicles could reduce the cost of traveling in cities and even make vehicle ownership obsolete. Cruise is leading the way into this market, and that provides tremendous upside for GM. This may be an old company in the auto industry, but it's making great strategic moves to be a leader in the future of electric and autonomous vehicles.\nPicks and shovels\nHoward Smith(ChargePoint Holdings):Rivian's public debut generated a lot of excitement for good reason. The company has big backers and reportedly a backlog of orders for both fleets and consumer electric vehicles (EVs). But investors have seen plenty of examples where initial excitement causes a spike in valuation that doesn't always last.\nAnother exciting recent event for EV investors was the passage of a federal infrastructure bill that will push $7.5 billion to help build out the charging infrastructure needed for this country to expand EV ownership. ChargePoint Holdings is the leader in that space with more than 118,000 charging ports, including more than 3,700 DC fast chargers. The vast majority of those stations are in the U.S., though the company is also growing its business in Europe where it already has 5,400 charging locations.\nThose federal infrastructure funds will be sent to states that will issue grants to the charging network companies, which will make up the country's network. And that should be a big shot in the arm for ChargePoint as the largest operator in the country. Even prior to the realization of that catalyst, ChargePoint was growing its business beyond what it had predicted before its public debut.\nThe company recorded $146 million in revenue for its full fiscal year 2021 that ended Jan. 31, 2021. In its most recently reported quarter ended July 31, 2021, it raised its revenue guidance for its current fiscal year by 15% to a range of $225 million to $235 million. At the midpoint, that would represent annual revenue growth of 57.5%, even without the added catalyst of federal funds.\nChargePoint generated its own excitement when it announced it would begin trading publicly last year. The stock is almost 50% off the peak price reached at the end of Dec. 2020 prior to the closing of its merger with the special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) that brought it public. It wouldn't be surprising to see Rivian's stock fluctuate as well. But for Rivian -- and all the other EV makers -- to be successful, there will need to be charging infrastructure in place. That makes ChargePoint a \"picks and shovels\" type of investment for the rapidly growing EV sector. That could make it a better investment today than adding to Rivian's early hype.\nLucid is proving it can compete against the best in the business\nDaniel Foelber(Lucid Group):Rivian's roughly $120 billion market capitalization is raising eyebrows considering the company is relatively unproven. Similarly, Lucid Motors has received its fair share of criticism for sporting a $65 billion market cap just over a month into the mass production of its Lucid Air Dream Edition luxury sedan.\nRivian and Lucid are pricey, and it's hard to say which is the better value now. Rivian has received backing from Amazon and Ford as it targets the higher-end electric lifestyle truck and electric delivery van markets. Similar to Tesla(NASDAQ:TSLA), the company is bypassing the dealership framework of traditional automakers by marketing directly to consumers. Rivian also plans to build its own charging network to make electricity more accessible in remote places where a core part of its outdoor-focused target demographic requires the ability to charge. By comparison,Lucid doesn't feel the need to invest in its own charging network, choosing instead to save money by partnering with the growing list of third-party charging providers.\nRivian has already faced delivery delays due to the global chip shortage. By comparison, Lucid has quickly built a reputation for delivering on its promises, having hit all of its major 2021 goals on time. Lucid also has an excellent management team and plenty of cash to fund its 2022 operations.\nArguably the best reason why there's never been a better time to buy Lucid stock is that the company has achieved incredible engineering feats that rival Tesla-- the undisputed champ in the EV industry. Packing in more battery cells can help improve performance, but Lucid isn't doing that. Instead, it has built a compact battery pack that sports a battery efficiency of 4.5 miles per kilowatt-hour (mi/kWh) of stored energy, which is higher than the Tesla Model S, Jaguar I-Pace, Porsche Taycan, and other competitors. Revenue also exceeded estimates, helped by higher jet deliveries and stronger results from the company’s defense and global service operations. Shares rallied 4.6% in the premarket.</p>\n<p><b>Pfizer(PFE)</b> – Pfizer beat estimates by 10 cents with adjusted quarterly earnings of 97 cents per share, and revenue above estimates as well. The drugmaker also raised its full-year forecast, anticipating continued strong sales of its Covid-19 vaccine.</p>\n<p><b>Spotify(SPOT)</b> – Spotify fell 3.2% in the premarket, despite reporting a smaller-than-expected loss for its latest quarter and better-than-expected revenue. The music-streaming service noted that its monthly active user numbers did fall below its prior guidance.</p>\n<p><b>Shopify(SHOP)</b> – Shopify rose 1.3% in premarket trading, after reporting adjusted quarterly earnings of $2.24 per share compared to a 97 cent consensus estimate. The e-commerce platform provider continued to benefit from the boom in online shopping.</p>\n<p><b>Apple(AAPL)</b> – Apple fell 0.7% in premarket trading after warning that the negative impact of the global chip shortage would worsen this quarter. That caution came after Apple reported quarterly earnings of $1.30 per share, beating the $1.01 consensus estimate, and seeing revenue surge past estimates as well.</p>\n<p><b>Alphabet(GOOGL)</b> – Alphabet earned $27.26 per share for its latest quarter, well above the $19.34 consensus estimate. Revenue for the Google parent also trounced estimates amid the ongoing surge in online ad spending. Alphabet shares jumped 3.5% in premarket action.</p>\n<p><b>Microsoft(MSFT)</b> – Microsoft beat estimates by 25 cents with quarterly earnings of $2.17 per share, while revenue beat estimates as well on continued strong growth in the company’s cloud computing business. Microsoft continues to benefit from the pandemic shift to working and learning from home. Microsoft added 1.2% in premarket trading.</p>\n<p><b>Starbucks(SBUX)</b> – Starbucks earned an adjusted $1.01 per share for its latest quarter, beating the 78 cent consensus estimate, with revenue beating forecasts as well. The coffee chain did say higher costs for labor and supplies could remain for months to come and the stock fell 3% in the premarket.</p>\n<p><b>Visa(V)</b> – Visa came in 14 cents ahead of consensus forecasts with an adjusted quarterly profit of $1.49 per share. The payment network’s revenue topped estimates as well. Visa benefited from the rebound in spending on travel and entertainment, but the stock slid 0.7% in premarket trading.</p>\n<p><b>Advanced Micro Devices(AMD)</b> – AMD shares rose 3.1% in premarket action as the chipmaker forecast current-quarter revenue above analyst expectations. It predicts strong demand for chips used in gaming consoles and data centers, following a quarter that saw it beat Street estimates on the top and bottom lines.</p>\n<p><b>Mattel(MAT)</b> – Mattel beat estimates for its latest quarter, and also raised its full-year forecast. The toymaker is expecting continued strong demand for its Barbie and Hot Wheels brands, even as it plans to raise prices. Shares surged 7% in the premarket.</p>\n<p><b>Teladoc Health(TDOC)</b>– Teladoc lost 86 cents per share for its latest quarter, wider than the 56 cent loss that Wall Street had been expecting. Revenue did beat forecasts, but the stock is under pressure on weaker-than-expected membership growth for the telehealth service provider. traders of Reddit's Wall Street Bets community shocked the investment world this year by bidding up<b>AMC Entertainment</b>(NYSE:AMC), sending shares higher by nearly 3,000% at one point. However, at Friday's prices, the stock was down more than 40% from its June highs.</p>\n<p>Many traders held a \"buy first, ask questions later\" mentality when opening up a stake. But now, the time for questions has come.Can AMC deliversustained growthover the long term?</p>\n<p><b>Upcoming catalysts</b></p>\n<p>The COVID-19 pandemic has created a massive backlog of unreleased films. Production delays have played a role, but studio executives have also postponed releases until theaters reopened to maximize revenue. Over the next year, a number of big franchises will have new installments, including<i>Jurassic Park</i>,<i>Batman</i>,<i>Transformers</i>,<i>John Wick</i>,<i>Avatar</i>,<i>Indiana Jones</i>,<i>Mission</i><i>Impossible</i>, and Marvel. Keep in mind that AMC is the largest theater chain in the country, with over 60% market share. So there's no doubt there would be an impressive boost to the company's bottom line when these movies hit the theaters (keep in mind that AMC's business wasn't consistently profitable before COVID, so even a blockbuster year may not be a sure thing).</p>\n<p>In addition, AMC may have been saved simply by the efforts of Reddit traders to boost the stock. Thanks to a high stock price, AMC raised $1.246 billion in cash via equity offerings in the second quarter alone. That increased its total liquidity to over $2 billion, against $5.5 billion of long-term debt.</p>\n<p>If AMC used the cash to pay back debt, then the return on investment would be immediate (we'll have to wait until second-quarter earnings on Aug. 5 to learn more). The average interest rate of AMC's debt exceeds 10%, and interest payments outweighed total revenue in the first quarter. Moreover, Adam Aron, the company's CEO, announced on July 6 that he would scrap a plan to issue 25 million additional shares. Aron does not anticipate any other stock offerings in 2021, which suggests the company believes its turnaround is on track. The company is acting as if it believes it has enough cash to execute its plans for now.</p>\n<p><b>Upcoming inhibitors</b></p>\n<p>A major risk ahead for AMC is the spread of the delta and lambda coronavirus variants in the country. Moviegoers may be inclined to stay at home and watch new releases on streaming services instead, especially when it comes to new releases available to both channels. As a result, don't expect the company's traffic to rebound to pre-pandemic levels anytime soon.</p>\n<p>In addition, it's not clear yet how the company could sustain its growth or earnings in the long term. After the movie backlog clears up, AMC would be competing with multiple movie-streaming services and home-entertainment enthusiasts for traffic. But it can't spare much cash for the sake of innovation; the company still needs to generate cash flow to pay off its ballooning debt stack. On top of that, it still owes $400 million in rent to theater landlords due to the lockdowns in the past year.</p>\n<p><b>The missing element</b></p>\n<p>The problem of achieving innovation is a big one in the long run, and AMC is stuck in a catch-22. There isn't anything stopping AMC from launching a paid subscription streaming service for new movies. However, that will inevitably cannibalize revenue from its theaters, leading to a net-zero outcome.</p>\n<p>Offering a subscription pass to its theaters wouldn't really work either. MoviePass had already attempted that. To match the value proposition of streaming services, the company had to price its pass at $10 per month, resulting in staggering losses before it went bankrupt.</p>\n<p>But the biggest killer of AMC's prospects going forward is probably a combination of 5G and synchronized viewing. For example, the social community platform Discord allows its users to stream movies via its screen-share feature. While the movie plays, users are free to talk with each other, eat their own food, and otherwise enjoy the experience in ways that might be taboo in an actual theatre.</p>\n<p>With the rise of 5G, folks can watch movies via screen sharing just about anywhere. Bored while swimming in the lake? Just boot up your phone and watch a movie stream with friends. The best part is that the activity is free; intellectual property laws haven't caught on to the innovation yet, resulting in a grey area. At the end of the day, it would be extremely difficult for AMC to compete with these \"mini-virtual theaters\" where patrons can watch from anywhere and do whatever they like while watching.</p>\n<p><b>The verdict</b></p>\n<p>Since its inception, AMC has lost a cumulative $5.9 billion, and that number is growing. Investors should note that aside from another near-term spike/short squeeze, there are not many fundamentals backing the company's long-term prospects. In addition, its inability to devote cash to innovation will almost guarantee more revenue and bottom-line woes in the long run. That's on top of its inability to compete with peer-to-peer synchronized movie-viewing experiences. At a forward-looking price-to-sales (P/S) ratio over 8, AMC stock looks incredibly expensive for a company that could yet fall off another cliff in terms of growth. However, at Friday's prices, the stock was down more than 40% from its June highs.\nMany traders held a \"buy first, ask questions later\" mentality when opening up a stake. But now, the time for questions has come.Can AMC deliversustained growthover the long term?\nUpcoming catalysts\nThe COVID-19 pandemic has created a massive backlog of unreleased films. Production delays have played a role, but studio executives have also postponed releases until theaters reopened to maximize revenue. Over the next year, a number of big franchises will have new installments, includingJurassic Park,Batman,Transformers,John Wick,Avatar,Indiana Jones,MissionImpossible, and Marvel. Keep in mind that AMC is the largest theater chain in the country, with over 60% market share. So there's no doubt there would be an impressive boost to the company's bottom line when these movies hit the theaters (keep in mind that AMC's business wasn't consistently profitable before COVID, so even a blockbuster year may not be a sure thing).\nIn addition, AMC may have been saved simply by the efforts of Reddit traders to boost the stock. Thanks to a high stock price, AMC raised $1.246 billion in cash via equity offerings in the second quarter alone. That increased its total liquidity to over $2 billion, against $5.5 billion of long-term debt.\nIf AMC used the cash to pay back debt, then the return on investment would be immediate (we'll have to wait until second-quarter earnings on Aug. 5 to learn more). The average interest rate of AMC's debt exceeds 10%, and interest payments outweighed total revenue in the first quarter. Moreover, Adam Aron, the company's CEO, announced on July 6 that he would scrap a plan to issue 25 million additional shares. Aron does not anticipate any other stock offerings in 2021, which suggests the company believes its turnaround is on track. The company is acting as if it believes it has enough cash to execute its plans for now.\nUpcoming inhibitors\nA major risk ahead for AMC is the spread of the delta and lambda coronavirus variants in the country. Moviegoers may be inclined to stay at home and watch new releases on streaming services instead, especially when it comes to new releases available to both channels. As a result, don't expect the company's traffic to rebound to pre-pandemic levels anytime soon.\nIn addition, it's not clear yet how the company could sustain its growth or earnings in the long term. After the movie backlog clears up, AMC would be competing with multiple movie-streaming services and home-entertainment enthusiasts for traffic. But it can't spare much cash for the sake of innovation; the company still needs to generate cash flow to pay off its ballooning debt stack. On top of that, it still owes $400 million in rent to theater landlords due to the lockdowns in the past year.\nThe missing element\nThe problem of achieving innovation is a big one in the long run, and AMC is stuck in a catch-22. There isn't anything stopping AMC from launching a paid subscription streaming service for new movies. However, that will inevitably cannibalize revenue from its theaters, leading to a net-zero outcome.\nOffering a subscription pass to its theaters wouldn't really work either. MoviePass had already attempted that. To match the value proposition of streaming services, the company had to price its pass at $10 per month, resulting in staggering losses before it went bankrupt.\nBut the biggest killer of AMC's prospects going forward is probably a combination of 5G and synchronized viewing. For example, the social community platform Discord allows its users to stream movies via its screen-share feature. While the movie plays, users are free to talk with each other, eat their own food, and otherwise enjoy the experience in ways that might be taboo in an actual theatre.\nWith the rise of 5G, folks can watch movies via screen sharing just about anywhere. Bored while swimming in the lake? Just boot up your phone and watch a movie stream with friends. The best part is that the activity is free; intellectual property laws haven't caught on to the innovation yet, resulting in a grey area. At the end of the day, it would be extremely difficult for AMC to compete with these \"mini-virtual theaters\" where patrons can watch from anywhere and do whatever they like while watching.\nThe verdict\nSince its inception, AMC has lost a cumulative $5.9 billion, and that number is growing. Investors should note that aside from another near-term spike/short squeeze, there are not many fundamentals backing the company's long-term prospects. In addition, its inability to devote cash to innovation will almost guarantee more revenue and bottom-line woes in the long run. That's on top of its inability to compete with peer-to-peer synchronized movie-viewing experiences. At a forward-looking price-to-sales (P/S) ratio over 8, AMC stock looks incredibly expensive for a company that could yet fall off another cliff in terms of growth. The case for viewing this situation as unique, and distinct from other cyclical experiences, is based on the view that a fall and rise this violent never allowed for a traditional 'reset'.</p>\n<p>But 'normal' in markets is a funny concept, with the rough edges of memory often smoothed and polished by the passage of time. The cycle of 2003-07 ended with the largest banking and housing crisis since the Great Depression. The cycle of 1992-2000 ended with the bursting of an enormous equity bubble, widespread accounting fraud and unspeakable tragedy. 'Normal' cycles are nice in theory, harder in practice.</p>\n<p>Instead, let’s consider why we use the term ‘cycle’ at all. Economies and markets tend to follow cyclical patterns, patterns that tend to show up in market performance. It is those patterns we care about, and if they still apply, they can provide a useful guide in uncertain terrain.</p>\n<p>Was last year’s recession preceded by late-cycle conditions such as an inverted yield curve, low volatility, low unemployment, high consumer confidence and narrowing equity market breadth? It was. Did the resulting troughs in equities, credit, yields and yield curves match the usual cadence between market and economic lows? They did. And were the leaders of the ensuing rally the usual early-cycle winners, like small and cyclical stocks, high yield credit and industrial metals? They were.</p>\n<p>If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, we think that it’s a normal cycle. Or as normal as these things realistically are.&nbsp;If a lot of 'normal' cycle behavior has played out so far, it should&nbsp;<i>continue</i>&nbsp;to do so.</p>\n<p>Specifically, this relates to patterns of performance as the market recovers. And as that recovery advances, those patterns should shift. As noted by my colleague Michael Wilson, we think that we are moving to a mid-cycle market, despite being just 16 months removed from the lows of economic activity. We see a number of similarities between current conditions and 1H04, a mid-cycle period that followed a large, reflationary rally. And importantly, despite recent fears about growth, we think that the global recovery will keep pushing on (see&nbsp;The Growth Scare Anniversary, July 11, 2021).</p>\n<p>Because one can always find an indicator that fits their particular cycle view, we’ve long been fans of a composite. That’s our ‘cycle model’, which combines ten US metrics across macro, the credit cycle and corporate aggression to gauge where we are in the market cycle. After moving into late-cycle ‘downturn’ in June 2019, and early-cycle ‘repair’ in April 2020, it’s rocketed higher.<b>It has risen so fast that it’s blown right past what should be the next phase ('recovery'), and moved right into ‘expansion’.</b></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/41879c4f66b33597ee236bdd52841004\" tg-width=\"904\" tg-height=\"490\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">Thisis unusual. ‘Expansion’ is meant to capture conditions that are 'better than normal, and improving',<b>and since 1980, it has taken an average of 35 months to get there after 'downturn' ends</b>. Its speedy arrival speaks to a speedy recovery powered by enormous policy support.<b>It also hints at another possibility:&nbsp;this hotter cycle could be shorter.</b>This is our thesis, and it’s showing up in our quantitative measure.</p>\n<p>All this has a number of implications:</p>\n<ul>\n <li><b>The shorter the cycle, the worse for credit relative to other risky assets; credit enjoys fewer of the gains from the 'boom', is exposed if the next downturn is early, and faces more supply as corporate confidence increases</b>.
