Some market participants believe it’s still too soon for the central bank to signal such a tapering action, while others think the Fed will be able to find a happy medium that won’t upset the markets.\nEach scenario has different investing implications as they are expected to make big moves across asset classes.\nHere’s a playbook for traders on every scenario from the central bank’s key meeting.\nIf the Fed signals it’s staying with easy policies\nThe Fed could reiterate its transitory stance on inflation, ignoring the pick-up in price pressures reflected in recent economic data. If the central bank says its not time to remove accommodative policies and it’s not concerned about inflation, investors should stick with hedges against rising prices like commodities and stocks with high pricing power, investment banks found.\nBank of America screened S&P 500 companies that its analysts believe have the most pricing power and ability to expand margins at times of rising prices. The stocks include a few chipmakers —Nvidia,Texas InstrumentsandBroadcom— as well as consumer plays likeHome Depot,NikeandPepsiCo.Energy dividend payerExxon Mobilis also on the list.\nUBS also developed a framework for scoring corporate pricing agility, which considers pricing power, margin momentum and input cost exposure. For pricing power, UBS quantified the extent to which a company can raise prices over and above costs. For margin momentum, UBS tracked corporate pricing trends using its proprietary pricing mapping.\nFor input cost exposure, UBS searched for companies with negative sentiment around commodity and transport costs on earnings calls.\n\nBillionaire hedge fund manager Paul Tudor Jones said earlier this week that investors should “go all in on the inflation trades” if the Fed keeps ignoring higher prices.\n“If they treat these numbers — which were material events, they were very material —if they treat them with nonchalance, I think it’s just a green light to bet heavily on every inflation trade,” Tudor Jones said on “Squawk Box”on Monday.\n“If they say, ‘We’re on path, things are good,’ then I would just go all in on the inflation trades. I’d probably buy commodities, buy crypto, buy gold,” added Tudor Jones, who called the stock market crash in 1987.\nThe legendary investor believe cryptocurrencies and other commodities are favorable inflation hedges. Other than buying the commodities outright, investors could also bet on related exchange-traded funds, like gold miner ETFs.\nThe VanEck Vectors Gold Miners ETF (GDX),the biggest gold miner ETF with more than $14 billion in assets under management, has outperformed the populargold ETF GLDso far this year.\nIf the Fed signals it’s time to start removing easy policies\nAnother widely speculated scenario is for the Fed to signal that it’s nearing the time to dial back easy policy saying it will start tapering soon and move up its forecast for a rate increase. Under such a case where the central bank isn’t sufficiently dovish, many expect bond yields to shoot higher.\n“It could easily move longer yields higher,” said Kristina Hooper, Invesco’s chief global market strategist. “A revised dot plot could be one way to do that if it shows the anticipation of earlier or more aggressive rate hikes. And Fed Chair Jay Powell could easily push rates up if he shares that the Fed has started discussing tapering or suggests tapering could start in the next several months.”\nTudor Jones warned that this scenario could lead to another taper tantrum that could cause a correction in stocks.\n“If they course correct, if they say, ‘We’ve got incoming data, we’ve accomplished our mission or we’re on the way very rapidly to accomplishing our mission on employment,’ then you’re going to get a taper tantrum,”Tudor Jones said on Monday. “You’re going to get a sell-off in fixed income. You’re going to get a correction in stocks.”\nCNBC Pro combed through the returns of all S&P 500 stocks during the last five significant spikes in the 10-year Treasury yield. These five periods of a sharp move in rates occurred between 2003 and 2006, 2008 and 2009, 2012 and 2013, 2016 and 2018, and 2020 through now.\nAfter we found the stocks that beat the market every time, we looked for the names that are well-loved by analysts on Wall Street today. The stocks’ average gains during those rising interest rate periods are listed below, along with the percentage of analysts with buy ratings right now.\n\nBank of America’s head of U.S. equity and quantitative strategy Savita Subramanian is advising clients to buy high-quality stocks when tapering nears. High-quality stocks have a “B+” or better S&P quality rating.\nSubramanian said during the 2013 taper tantrum, high-quality names outperformed their low-quality counterparts by 1.3 percentage points from peak to trough in May and June.\nA hint at removing stimulus could also hurt stocks that are most sensitive to the economic recovery, including cyclicals like financials, energy and materials.\n“More hawkish = lower growth. Cyclicals should underperform,” Dennis DeBusschere, macro research analyst at Evercore ISI, said in a note. “The fact that hawkish concerns are being brought up at the same time people believe the reflation trade is in trouble and you have a poor Cyclical backdrop.”\nSo far in 2021, the energy sector has been the biggest winner among the 11 S&P 500 groupings, up 46%. Financials and real estate both gained more than 20% this year.\nIf the Fed makes both camps happy\nA third scenario could occur in which the Fed signals that it is concerned about inflation, but the central bank is not yet ready to taper.\nIf Fed chair Jerome Powell admits the discussion of tapering but nothing has been decided, then the market will likely see a modest rally, led by tech stocks, according to Tom Essaye, founder of the Sevens Report.\n“This is essentially the outcome that Powell and the Fed have been telegraphing for the past several weeks,” Essaye said. “This would be a continuation of the past two weeks’ Goldilocks market outlook. This outcome would help the S&P 500 extend last week’s breakout.”\nInvestors have been rotating back to tech as of late with bond yields coming down. The tech-heavyNasdaq Compositehas rallied about 2.5% this month, hitting a record close on Monday, its first all-time high since April 26. In comparison, the S&P 500 has risen just under 1% in June.\n“This is what the Fed has been doing for the last several months — warning that an inflation surge was coming but that it is transitory so no need to taper,” Jim Paulsen, chief investment strategist at the Leuthold Group, told CNBC. “Moreover, this is probably the most expected outcome from the Fed meeting.”\n“Yes, there may be comments by members that the time to start talking about tapering is here, but I think Powell will continue to suggest that inflation is up as expected but is not yet acting any differently than anticipated,” added Paulsen.\nThis year’s pullback in tech stocks has opened some opportunities in high-quality names that are now trading at a discount, according to top-rated technology analyst Toni Sacconaghi of Bernstein.\nThe Wall Street firm found several technology stocks that have inexpensive valuations and are high in quality. Bernstein screened for the cheapest tech names based on their forward price-to-earnings ratio. In fact, as of 1:45 p.m. EST today, the growth-stock benchmark had managed to gain more than 2.5%, leading the rest of the market higher.</p><p>A lot of well-knowngrowth stockshave taken a lot of punishment in recent weeks, as investors suffered a crisis of confidence in the prospects for many promising companies. On Thursday, though, things seemed to be turning around. In particular, shares of<b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/MELI\">MercadoLibre</a></b>(NASDAQ: MELI),<b>Okta</b>(NASDAQ: OKTA), and<b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/PYPL\">PayPal</a> Holdings</b>(NASDAQ: PYPL)are outpacing the Nasdaq's gains and aiming to bounce back fully from their setbacks in late February and earlier this month.</p><p><b>MercadoLibre's back in business</b></p><p>Less than a week ago, shares of MercadoLibre were down as much as 30% from their highs from earlier this year. Yet they've bounced back considerably, with today's nearly 10% gain helping to claw back lost ground.</p><p>The Latin American e-commerce specialist got a vote of confidence from analysts at BTIG on Thursday. They upgraded the stock from neutral to buy and set a price target of $1,720 per share. That provides MercadoLibre with additional upside of another 10% even from this afternoon's elevated price levels.</p><p>BTIG likes the strategy that MercadoLibre has been following, especially given the way that it has been able to add in ancillary services to its core e-commerce marketplace. The Mercado Pago payment network has been a hit all on its own, and it's generating considerable traffic from outside the MercadoLibre ecosystem. It also appears that the company is gaining market share overall from other players in the key Brazilian market.</p><p><b>Investors might like Okta's big buy after all</b></p><p>Shares of Okta were up 8%, continuing an advance that has taken the cyber-identity specialist's stock up about 20% from its recent lows. The stock was down as much as 30%, but fundamentally, Okta looks like it's doing things right.</p><p>The company originally lost ground when it reported fourth-quarter financial results last week. Despite year-over-year revenue gains of 40% and a modest profit for the period, investors weren't sure how to take guidance that suggested somewhat slower revenue growth and a possible loss.</p><p>Also raising a few questions wasOkta's $6.5 billion acquisition bidfor privately held Auth0, which focuses on customer identity management. That's a growth area, and some have said that the Auth0 product actually has some advantages over Okta's competing offering that made a buyout a win-win for Okta. Yet when the market was losing faith in growth stocks, it seemed like an ill-timed foray.</p><p>It's clear, though, that Okta isn't going to have any shortage of clients looking for identity verification services. That awareness is lifting the stock once again, and it could help build more momentum for Okta in the long run.</p><p><b>Paying the piper</b></p><p>Lastly, shares of PayPal Holdings gained about 5%. The payment network specialist has taken a 25% hit, but it's rising on a number of strategic moves.</p><p>First,PayPal recently finalized its agreement to buy Curv, a cryptocurrency security company. Crypto has been a big business for PayPal since late last year, when it started offering select tokens through its app. With crypto prices back near record levels, investors are excited about the potential for PayPal to keep competing effectively in the space.</p><p>Meanwhile, PayPal has also embraced efforts to allow customers to make purchases using short-term installment plans, breaking up purchase prices into four payments. PayPal'sPay in 4service isn't the only <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> in the business, but it represents the company's competitive entry into the space. Together, all these factors are making people feel good about PayPal once again.</p><p><b>Ride the wave</b></p><p>Volatility is hard to endure, but selling at lows rarely works out. Yet they've bounced back considerably, with today's nearly 10% gain helping to claw back lost ground.The Latin American e-commerce specialist got a vote of confidence from analysts at BTIG on Thursday. They upgraded the stock from neutral to buy and set a price target of $1,720 per share. That provides MercadoLibre with additional upside of another 10% even from this afternoon's elevated price levels.BTIG likes the strategy that MercadoLibre has been following, especially given the way that it has been able to add in ancillary services to its core e-commerce marketplace. The Mercado Pago payment network has been a hit all on its own, and it's generating considerable traffic from outside the MercadoLibre ecosystem. It also appears that the company is gaining market share overall from other players in the key Brazilian market.Investors might like Okta's big buy after allShares of Okta were up 8%, continuing an advance that has taken the cyber-identity specialist's stock up about 20% from its recent lows. The stock was down as much as 30%, but fundamentally, Okta looks like it's doing things right.The company originally lost ground when it reported fourth-quarter financial results last week. Recently, I came across yet another piece of evidence to support this idea.</p>\n<p>Over the past five years, Apple stock has produced monthly returns that have swung from a low of -18% in November 2018 to a high of 21% in August 2020. Although it may be hard to anticipate with much precision when the stock will perform best, there seems to be somewhat of a pattern.</p>\n<p>The graph below shows that steeper monthly losses in Apple shares tend to be followed by periods of strong stock performance. On Thursday, though, things seemed to be turning around. In particular, shares of<b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/MELI\">MercadoLibre</a></b>(NASDAQ: MELI),<b>Okta</b>(NASDAQ: OKTA), and<b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/PYPL\">PayPal</a> Holdings</b>(NASDAQ: PYPL)are outpacing the Nasdaq's gains and aiming to bounce back fully from their setbacks in late February and earlier this month.</p><p><b>MercadoLibre's back in business</b></p><p>Less than a week ago, shares of MercadoLibre were down as much as 30% from their highs from earlier this year. Yet they've bounced back considerably, with today's nearly 10% gain helping to claw back lost ground.</p><p>The Latin American e-commerce specialist got a vote of confidence from analysts at BTIG on Thursday. They upgraded the stock from neutral to buy and set a price target of $1,720 per share. That provides MercadoLibre with additional upside of another 10% even from this afternoon's elevated price levels.</p><p>BTIG likes the strategy that MercadoLibre has been following, especially given the way that it has been able to add in ancillary services to its core e-commerce marketplace. The Mercado Pago payment network has been a hit all on its own, and it's generating considerable traffic from outside the MercadoLibre ecosystem. It also appears that the company is gaining market share overall from other players in the key Brazilian market.</p><p><b>Investors might like Okta's big buy after all</b></p><p>Shares of Okta were up 8%, continuing an advance that has taken the cyber-identity specialist's stock up about 20% from its recent lows. The stock was down as much as 30%, but fundamentally, Okta looks like it's doing things right.</p><p>The company originally lost ground when it reported fourth-quarter financial results last week. Despite year-over-year revenue gains of 40% and a modest profit for the period, investors weren't sure how to take guidance that suggested somewhat slower revenue growth and a possible loss.</p><p>Also raising a few questions wasOkta's $6.5 billion acquisition bidfor privately held Auth0, which focuses on customer identity management. That's a growth area, and some have said that the Auth0 product actually has some advantages over Okta's competing offering that made a buyout a win-win for Okta. Yet when the market was losing faith in growth stocks, it seemed like an ill-timed foray.</p><p>It's clear, though, that Okta isn't going to have any shortage of clients looking for identity verification services. That awareness is lifting the stock once again, and it could help build more momentum for Okta in the long run.</p><p><b>Paying the piper</b></p><p>Lastly, shares of PayPal Holdings gained about 5%. The payment network specialist has taken a 25% hit, but it's rising on a number of strategic moves.</p><p>First,PayPal recently finalized its agreement to buy Curv, a cryptocurrency security company. Crypto has been a big business for PayPal since late last year, when it started offering select tokens through its app. With crypto prices back near record levels, investors are excited about the potential for PayPal to keep competing effectively in the space.</p><p>Meanwhile, PayPal has also embraced efforts to allow customers to make purchases using short-term installment plans, breaking up purchase prices into four payments. PayPal'sPay in 4service isn't the only <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> in the business, but it represents the company's competitive entry into the space. Together, all these factors are making people feel good about PayPal once again.</p><p><b>Ride the wave</b></p><p>Volatility is hard to endure, but selling at lows rarely works out. In particular, shares ofMercadoLibre(NASDAQ: MELI),Okta(NASDAQ: OKTA), andPayPal Holdings(NASDAQ: PYPL)are outpacing the Nasdaq's gains and aiming to bounce back fully from their setbacks in late February and earlier this month.MercadoLibre's back in businessLess than a week ago, shares of MercadoLibre were down as much as 30% from their highs from earlier this year. Yet they've bounced back considerably, with today's nearly 10% gain helping to claw back lost ground.The Latin American e-commerce specialist got a vote of confidence from analysts at BTIG on Thursday. They upgraded the stock from neutral to buy and set a price target of $1,720 per share. Some market participants believe it’s still too soon for the central bank to signal such a tapering action, while others think the Fed will be able to find a happy medium that won’t upset the markets.\nEach scenario has different investing implications as they are expected to make big moves across asset classes.\nHere’s a playbook for traders on every scenario from the central bank’s key meeting.\nIf the Fed signals it’s staying with easy policies\nThe Fed could reiterate its transitory stance on inflation, ignoring the pick-up in price pressures reflected in recent economic data. If the central bank says its not time to remove accommodative policies and it’s not concerned about inflation, investors should stick with hedges against rising prices like commodities and stocks with high pricing power, investment banks found.\nBank of America screened S&P 500 companies that its analysts believe have the most pricing power and ability to expand margins at times of rising prices. The stocks include a few chipmakers —Nvidia,Texas InstrumentsandBroadcom— as well as consumer plays likeHome Depot,NikeandPepsiCo.Energy dividend payerExxon Mobilis also on the list.\nUBS also developed a framework for scoring corporate pricing agility, which considers pricing power, margin momentum and input cost exposure. For pricing power, UBS quantified the extent to which a company can raise prices over and above costs. For margin momentum, UBS tracked corporate pricing trends using its proprietary pricing mapping.\nFor input cost exposure, UBS searched for companies with negative sentiment around commodity and transport costs on earnings calls.\n\nBillionaire hedge fund manager Paul Tudor Jones said earlier this week that investors should “go all in on the inflation trades” if the Fed keeps ignoring higher prices.\n“If they treat these numbers — which were material events, they were very material —if they treat them with nonchalance, I think it’s just a green light to bet heavily on every inflation trade,” Tudor Jones said on “Squawk Box”on Monday.\n“If they say, ‘We’re on path, things are good,’ then I would just go all in on the inflation trades. I’d probably buy commodities, buy crypto, buy gold,” added Tudor Jones, who called the stock market crash in 1987.\nThe legendary investor believe cryptocurrencies and other commodities are favorable inflation hedges. Other than buying the commodities outright, investors could also bet on related exchange-traded funds, like gold miner ETFs.\nThe VanEck Vectors Gold Miners ETF (GDX),the biggest gold miner ETF with more than $14 billion in assets under management, has outperformed the populargold ETF GLDso far this year.\nIf the Fed signals it’s time to start removing easy policies\nAnother widely speculated scenario is for the Fed to signal that it’s nearing the time to dial back easy policy saying it will start tapering soon and move up its forecast for a rate increase. Under such a case where the central bank isn’t sufficiently dovish, many expect bond yields to shoot higher.\n“It could easily move longer yields higher,” said Kristina Hooper, Invesco’s chief global market strategist. “A revised dot plot could be one way to do that if it shows the anticipation of earlier or more aggressive rate hikes. And Fed Chair Jay Powell could easily push rates up if he shares that the Fed has started discussing tapering or suggests tapering could start in the next several months.”\nTudor Jones warned that this scenario could lead to another taper tantrum that could cause a correction in stocks.\n“If they course correct, if they say, ‘We’ve got incoming data, we’ve accomplished our mission or we’re on the way very rapidly to accomplishing our mission on employment,’ then you’re going to get a taper tantrum,”Tudor Jones said on Monday. “You’re going to get a sell-off in fixed income. You’re going to get a correction in stocks.”\nCNBC Pro combed through the returns of all S&P 500 stocks during the last five significant spikes in the 10-year Treasury yield. These five periods of a sharp move in rates occurred between 2003 and 2006, 2008 and 2009, 2012 and 2013, 2016 and 2018, and 2020 through now.\nAfter we found the stocks that beat the market every time, we looked for the names that are well-loved by analysts on Wall Street today. The stocks’ average gains during those rising interest rate periods are listed below, along with the percentage of analysts with buy ratings right now.\n\nBank of America’s head of U.S. equity and quantitative strategy Savita Subramanian is advising clients to buy high-quality stocks when tapering nears. High-quality stocks have a “B+” or better S&P quality rating.\nSubramanian said during the 2013 taper tantrum, high-quality names outperformed their low-quality counterparts by 1.3 percentage points from peak to trough in May and June.\nA hint at removing stimulus could also hurt stocks that are most sensitive to the economic recovery, including cyclicals like financials, energy and materials.\n“More hawkish = lower growth. Cyclicals should underperform,” Dennis DeBusschere, macro research analyst at Evercore ISI, said in a note. “The fact that hawkish concerns are being brought up at the same time people believe the reflation trade is in trouble and you have a poor Cyclical backdrop.”\nSo far in 2021, the energy sector has been the biggest winner among the 11 S&P 500 groupings, up 46%. Financials and real estate both gained more than 20% this year.\nIf the Fed makes both camps happy\nA third scenario could occur in which the Fed signals that it is concerned about inflation, but the central bank is not yet ready to taper.\nIf Fed chair Jerome Powell admits the discussion of tapering but nothing has been decided, then the market will likely see a modest rally, led by tech stocks, according to Tom Essaye, founder of the Sevens Report.\n“This is essentially the outcome that Powell and the Fed have been telegraphing for the past several weeks,” Essaye said. “This would be a continuation of the past two weeks’ Goldilocks market outlook. This outcome would help the S&P 500 extend last week’s breakout.”\nInvestors have been rotating back to tech as of late with bond yields coming down. The tech-heavyNasdaq Compositehas rallied about 2.5% this month, hitting a record close on Monday, its first all-time high since April 26. In comparison, the S&P 500 has risen just under 1% in June.\n“This is what the Fed has been doing for the last several months — warning that an inflation surge was coming but that it is transitory so no need to taper,” Jim Paulsen, chief investment strategist at the Leuthold Group, told CNBC. “Moreover, this is probably the most expected outcome from the Fed meeting.”\n“Yes, there may be comments by members that the time to start talking about tapering is here, but I think Powell will continue to suggest that inflation is up as expected but is not yet acting any differently than anticipated,” added Paulsen.\nThis year’s pullback in tech stocks has opened some opportunities in high-quality names that are now trading at a discount, according to top-rated technology analyst Toni Sacconaghi of Bernstein.\nThe Wall Street firm found several technology stocks that have inexpensive valuations and are high in quality. My fears over the&nbsp;market cap dipping below $2 trillionfor the first time since November were also confirmed, maybe more quickly than I could have anticipated.</p>\n<p>Apple stock is now nearly 19% off the peak of less than 30 trading days ago, and one inch away from bear territory. Investors must be feeling uneasy about holding shares during this uncomfortable pullback.</p>\n<p>But I believe that shareholders also have reasons to be optimistic.</p>\n<p><b>History says: buy Apple</b></p>\n<p>Of course, a successful investment in Apple depends primarily on the company performing well and delivering above-consensus financial results going forward. In that regard, Apple’s business seems to be in very good shape, at least judging by&nbsp;the company’s most recent earnings report.</p>\n<p>So, I turn away from business fundamentals for now and focus on price action. Historically, the best strategy has been&nbsp;to buy Apple when it is well off its peak. Recently, I came across yet another piece of evidence to support this idea.</p>\n<p>Over the past five years, Apple stock has produced monthly returns that have swung from a low of -18% in November 2018 to a high of 21% in August 2020. Although it may be hard to anticipate with much precision when the stock will perform best, there seems to be somewhat of a pattern.</p>\n<p>The graph below shows that steeper monthly losses in Apple shares tend to be followed by periods of strong stock performance. Notice the dotted arrows:</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/45802af85db02f208dc6687c52dd4a63\" tg-width=\"1240\" tg-height=\"284\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Stock Rover</span></p>\n<p>Below are some numbers to help illustrate the point.</p>\n<p>Since 2016, Apple has produced an average three-month return of 3.5%, with worst decline of -11% in the fourth quarter of 2018. But an investor who waited to buy shares only after two months of material losses (defined here as -3%) in the previous three periods earned an average three-month return that was nearly twice as high, at 6.7%.</p>\n<p>March is shaping up to be a bad month for Apple, after January saw shares tank and February failed to impress. Judging only by the pattern described above, this could be a good time to jump in.</p>\n<p><b>Calendar pattern says: buy Apple</b></p>\n<p>The second reason to buy Apple now has to do with annual patterns in stock returns. The graph below tells a compelling story.</p>\n<p>Notice that the average monthly gains in Apple shares over the past five years have been best in the summer months of July and August. Prior to this period, the returns improve slowly throughout the spring, as the stock recovers from an underwhelming holiday quarter.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/563f095f6d02bf7c530705e701c30e2b\" tg-width=\"1240\" tg-height=\"299\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Stock Rover</span></p>\n<p>There is some logic to this pattern. September tends to be the month in which the new iPhone model is announced, a few weeks ahead of Black Friday. At that point, investors have likely already bid up the share price in anticipation for Apple’s “hot season” of sales. Sell-the-news pressures begin to accumulate.</p>\n<p>In 2021, something similar could happen. The market’s preference for small-cap value stocks over mega-cap growth ones during a year of economic recovery will eventually fizzle. At that point, chatter about&nbsp;Apple’s iPhone 13 will begin to surface. However, two price patterns suggest that this could be a good time to buy the stock.\nOn Monday, March 8, Apple stock had its worst day of trading since October 2020: down 4.2%, despite lack of company-specific news. My fears over the market cap dipping below $2 trillionfor the first time since November were also confirmed, maybe more quickly than I could have anticipated.\nApple stock is now nearly 19% off the peak of less than 30 trading days ago, and one inch away from bear territory. Investors must be feeling uneasy about holding shares during this uncomfortable pullback.\nBut I believe that shareholders also have reasons to be optimistic.\nHistory says: buy Apple\nOf course, a successful investment in Apple depends primarily on the company performing well and delivering above-consensus financial results going forward. In that regard, Apple’s business seems to be in very good shape, at least judging by the company’s most recent earnings report.\nSo, I turn away from business fundamentals for now and focus on price action. Historically, the best strategy has been to buy Apple when it is well off its peak. Recently, I came across yet another piece of evidence to support this idea.\nOver the past five years, Apple stock has produced monthly returns that have swung from a low of -18% in November 2018 to a high of 21% in August 2020. Although it may be hard to anticipate with much precision when the stock will perform best, there seems to be somewhat of a pattern.\nThe graph below shows that steeper monthly losses in Apple shares tend to be followed by periods of strong stock performance. Notice the dotted arrows:\nStock Rover\nBelow are some numbers to help illustrate the point.\nSince 2016, Apple has produced an average three-month return of 3.5%, with worst decline of -11% in the fourth quarter of 2018. But an investor who waited to buy shares only after two months of material losses (defined here as -3%) in the previous three periods earned an average three-month return that was nearly twice as high, at 6.7%.\nMarch is shaping up to be a bad month for Apple, after January saw shares tank and February failed to impress. Judging only by the pattern described above, this could be a good time to jump in.\nCalendar pattern says: buy Apple\nThe second reason to buy Apple now has to do with annual patterns in stock returns. The graph below tells a compelling story.\nNotice that the average monthly gains in Apple shares over the past five years have been best in the summer months of July and August. Prior to this period, the returns improve slowly throughout the spring, as the stock recovers from an underwhelming holiday quarter.\nStock Rover\nThere is some logic to this pattern. September tends to be the month in which the new iPhone model is announced, a few weeks ahead of Black Friday. At that point, investors have likely already bid up the share price in anticipation for Apple’s “hot season” of sales. Sell-the-news pressures begin to accumulate.\nIn 2021, something similar could happen. The market’s preference for small-cap value stocks over mega-cap growth ones during a year of economic recovery will eventually fizzle. At that point, chatter about Apple’s iPhone 13 will begin to surface.
