Should investors expect similar performance over the next 12 months?
\n
Apple stock has surpassed $2.9 trillion market cap for the first time, and investors celebrate outstanding one-year returns of around 45%. Since the start of the iPhone era (i.e. 2007 to present), AAPL has produced very solid, but still lower average one-year gains of 36%.
\n
Figure 1: Apple store in Chongqing, China.
\n
Now, shareholders look forward. Is it reasonable to expect AAPL stock to climb another 45% until the end of 2022? Today, the Apple Maven sets aside business fundamentals for a moment and looks at what history has to say about this question.
\n
What to expect of AAPL
\n
I have written plenty about how Wall Street experts have recently taken sides on Apple stock. On the one hand, bulls see a strong holiday quarter of sales and growth opportunities in 2022. On the other hand, a few bears think that AAPL could be overpriced by nearly 20% due to slowing growth in a post-pandemic environment and shorter lead times on iPhones.
\n
But to understand if Apple shares could climb another 45% in the next 12 months, I turn to historical share price behavior. The gains observed in the past year may look outsized vs. the S&P 500’s historical performance. But they are fairly standard for a stock like AAPL.
\n
The chart below shows the average gains produced by holding AAPL for 12 months, since the launch year of the first iPhone model. If the stock were bought on any given day, returns would have been 36%. If bought within 5% of peak prices, gains would have been much lower: 25%.
\n
Notice that the outsized gains earned from holding Apple stock for a year tend to come from buying shares after a steep 20%-plus drawdown. The last one happened in September 2020, and the previous one had been during the initial COVID-19 bear market.
\n
Figure 2: Average 1-year gains in AAPL since 2007.
\n
The chart above reinforces the idea that buying AAPL near peaks, as is the case today, has historically led to below average returns. Of course, these averages have still been much better than what an investor would have earned from buying and holding a diversified basket of stocks, like the S&P 500 or even the Nasdaq.
\n
Averages only tell part of a story. Equally important, the range of outcomes has been very wide. For instance, buying AAPL near a peak in December 2007 would have resulted in massive loss of -57% over the following year. On the other hand, buying near the peak in January of the same year would have resulted in an impressive one-year gain of +128%.
\n
Below is the distribution (histogram) of one-year returns in AAPL, when shares are bought near peaks. Again, the range of outcomes has been very wide. That said, typical gains have been roughly in the 20%-to-30% territory.
\n
Figure 3: Distribution of 1-year returns in AAPL, near peaks.
\n
The Apple Maven’s take
\n
Can AAPL rise another 45% in the next year? It sure can, even off its current peak levels. In fact, Apple shares have, in rare cases, more than doubled in price in 12 months even after trading near all-time highs.
\n
However, for the sake of being conservative, I don’t think that investors should bet on something like it happening next. I think that more modest gains of 20% to 30% through December 2022, if reached, would already be considered outstanding.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Can Apple Stock Climb Another 45%? If bought within 5% of peak prices, gains would have been much lower: 25%.\nNotice that the outsized gains earned from holding Apple stock for a year tend to come from buying shares after a steep 20%-plus drawdown. The last one happened in September 2020, and the previous one had been during the initial COVID-19 bear market.\nFigure 2: Average 1-year gains in AAPL since 2007.\nThe chart above reinforces the idea that buying AAPL near peaks, as is the case today, has historically led to below average returns. Of course, these averages have still been much better than what an investor would have earned from buying and holding a diversified basket of stocks, like the S&P 500 or even the Nasdaq.\nAverages only tell part of a story. Equally important, the range of outcomes has been very wide. For instance, buying AAPL near a peak in December 2007 would have resulted in massive loss of -57% over the following year. On the other hand, buying near the peak in January of the same year would have resulted in an impressive one-year gain of +128%.\nBelow is the distribution (histogram) of one-year returns in AAPL, when shares are bought near peaks. Again, the range of outcomes has been very wide. That said, typical gains have been roughly in the 20%-to-30% territory.\nFigure 3: Distribution of 1-year returns in AAPL, near peaks.\nThe Apple Maven’s take\nCan AAPL rise another 45% in the next year? It sure can, even off its current peak levels. In fact, Apple shares have, in rare cases, more than doubled in price in 12 months even after trading near all-time highs.\nHowever, for the sake of being conservative, I don’t think that investors should bet on something like it happening next. I think that more modest gains of 20% to 30% through December 2022, if reached, would already be considered outstanding.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":778,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":602718517,"gmtCreate":1639066013365,"gmtModify":1639066032188,"author":{"id":"3572656728096523","authorId":"3572656728096523","name":"babyshark","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3572656728096523","authorIdStr":"3572656728096523"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Lolol","listText":"Lolol","text":"Lolol","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/602718517","repostId":"1196130142","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1196130142","kind":"news","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Providing corporate earnings prompted a pivot back to growth stocks.
\n
A pull-back in economically sensitive cyclicals kept the S&P 500’s and the blue-chip Dow’s gains muted, while small-caps underperformed their larger rivals.
\n
But megacap tech and tech-adjacent stocks, such as Microsoft Corp, Amazon.com, Apple Inc, Facebook Inc and Alphabet Inc, rose ahead of their quarterly results next week, putting the Nasdaq out front.
\n
All three major U.S. stock indexes ended the session within 1% of their record closing highs.
\n
Growth stocks, which outperformed throughout the health crisis, were back in favor, gaining 0.8%, while the value index slipped by 0.5%.
\n
“The market is flip-flopping between the view that economic growth has almost peaked so you need to buy stocks that manufacture their own growth like tech names, versus the view that economic growth will continue and you want to own cyclicals and value names,” said David Carter, chief investment officer at Lenox Wealth Advisors in New York.
\n
The number of U.S. workers filing first-time applications for unemployment benefits spiked unexpectedly to 419,000 last week, a two-month high, according to the Labor Department.
\n
Market participants are closely watching labor market indicators for hints as to when the Federal Reserve, expected to convene next week for its two-day monetary policy meeting, will begin discussions about hiking key interest rates from near zero.
\n
“The jobless data today didn’t have a meaningful impact on markets or the economic outlook,” Carter added. “It’s now all about how much longer the Fed will tolerate low rates. The Fed seems to be favoring its full employment mandate more than its price stability mandate.”
\n
“Accordingly, the upcoming Fed meeting could be impactful,” Carter said.
\n
Benchmark Treasury yields eased after the bid at the largest-ever TIPS auction touched a record low, pressuring rate sensitive banks.
\n
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 25.35 points, or 0.07%, to 34,823.35, the S&P 500 gained 8.79 points, or 0.20%, to 4,367.48 and the Nasdaq Composite added 52.64 points, or 0.36%, to 14,684.60.
\n
Of the 11 major sectors of the S&P 500, tech was shining brightest, gaining 0.7%. Energy stocks suffered the largest percentage drop.
\n
The second-quarter reporting season barreled ahead at full-throttle, with 104 of the companies in the S&P 500 having reported. Of those, 88% have beaten consensus estimates, according to Refinitiv.
\n
Drugmaker Biogen Inc gained 1.1% after hiking its full-year revenue guidance, while Domino’s Pizza Inc surged 14.6% to an all-time high on the heels of its quarterly report.
\n
Southwest Airlines Co posted a bigger-than-expected quarterly loss, sending its stock down 3.5%, and American Airlines Group Inc dipped 1.1% even after reporting a quarterly profit.
\n
The S&P 1500 Airlines index ended the session off 1.7%.
\n
Shares of Texas Instruments Inc slid 5.3% after its current-quarter revenue forecast cast concerns as to whether the company will be able to meet spiking demand in the face of a global semiconductor shortage.
\n
The Philadelphia SE Semiconductor index ended the session down 0.9%.
\n
Chipmaker Intel Corp slipped more than 1% in extended trading after the chipmaker posted results and raised its annual revenue forecast.
\n
Declining issues outnumbered advancing ones on the NYSE by a 1.82-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq, a 1.90-to-1 ratio favored decliners.
\n
The S&P 500 posted 39 new 52-week highs and no new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 70 new highs and 54 new lows.
\n
Volume on U.S. exchanges was 8.25 billion shares, compared with the 10.12 billion average over the last 20 trading days.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; Unity is an advanced game development engine that powers over half of the world's mobile, PC, and console games.
\n
Roblox encourages users to monetize their games with an in-app currency called Robux within its walled garden. Unity offers developers more flexible tools for integrating in-app ads, in-app purchases, and other features into their games.
\n
The bulls claim Roblox's self-sustaining cycle of content creation, self-promotion, and monetization will fuel its long-term growth. The bears will point out that half of the platform's daily active users (DAUs) are under the age of 13, and they might eventually grow out of Roblox's simple experiences or graduate to a more advanced game development engine like Unity.
\n
The bulls will point to Roblox's growth rates. Between the first quarters of 2018 and 2021, Roblox's DAUs more than quadrupled from 10.3 million to 42.1 million, its total hours engaged surged from 2.1 billion to 9.7 billion, and its average bookings per DAU jumped from $11.62 to $15.48.
\n
Roblox's revenue rose 56% in 2019, soared 82% in 2020, and analysts expect 167% growth this year. But next year, they expect its revenue to rise just 26% after the pandemic ends and more students return to school.
\n
The bears will point out Roblox isn't profitable, and it probably can't achieve profitability without reducing its exchange rate between U.S. dollars and Robux for developers. However, doing so could alienate its developers and throttle the platform's output of new content.
\n
Why Roblox probably can't hit $1 trillion by 2030
\n
Even if Roblox maintains a premium price-to-sales ratio of 20 through 2030, it would need to generate $50 billion in annual sales to hit the $1 trillion mark. Roblox generated just $933 million in revenues in 2020, so it would need to generate a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of nearly 50% to hit $50 billion by 2030.
\n
If Roblox's valuations cool off, as they'll likely do over the years, it will need to generate an ever higher CAGR to become a $1 trillion company. By comparison, Amazon grew its revenues at a CAGR of 27.4% over the past decade -- and it currently trades at just four times this year's sales. Therefore, it seems highly unlikely Roblox will become a $1 trillion company within the next decade.
\n
But that doesn't mean Roblox won't generate multibagger gains over the next decade. It could remain popular long after the pandemic passes, attract a new generation of younger users, and launch more powerful tools for advanced users. As it continues to expand, economies of scale should kick in and strengthen its earnings growth. Let's find out a bit more about these three stocks.
\n
\n
1. Activision Blizzard
\n
Activision Blizzard owns eight franchises that have achieved at least $1 billion in lifetime bookings. It's best known for making one of the most-played first-person shooters on the market in Call of Duty. A $1,000 investment in Activision stock in 2003, right after the first Call of Duty title was released, would be worth nearly $30,000 today.
\n
The Call of Duty franchise continues to grow. It's included in the company's Activision segment, which reached a record 150 million monthly active users (MAUs) in the first quarter. With seven other major franchises under its umbrella, Activision Blizzard sees an opportunity to improve those titles to more than double its MAUs to 1 billion.
\n
Making big-budget video game titles does require investing in thousands of employees and can involve significant marketing expenses, but many other aspects of production are not as capital intensive when compared to other industries. This allows top game companies that can sell millions of copies of new releases to produce robust amounts of free cash flow. Over the past four quarters, Activision Blizzard generated $2.8 billion in free cash flow on $8.5 billion in revenue.
\n
It pays out less than a fifth of that free cash flow in dividends, bringing the current dividend yield to 0.52%. There's clearly potential for Activision to safely double or triple that yield by increasing the payout ratio over time.
\n
Activision Blizzard owns several franchises that each have a built-in base of millions of fans, including World of Warcraft, Diablo, and Overwatch. The company is well stocked with cash, with $9.3 billion on the balance sheet, which should provide plenty of capital to continue reinvesting for growth.
\n
2. Electronic Arts
\n
Electronic Arts is known for its EA Sports titles, most notably Madden and FIFA. EA added 42 million new players to its network during the pandemic. It has a total of 230 million players and viewers, but management is targeting 500 million over the next five years.
\n
Most importantly, EA has demonstrated the ability to bring out new hits. The free-to-play shooter Apex Legends launched in 2019 and recently surpassed $1 billion in bookings. EA also revealed plans earlier this year to relaunch its previous NCAA Football franchise under the new title EA Sports College Football, which should be released within the next few years.
\n
EA's success in growing its sports business in recent years has left it with lots of cash to reinvest. It entered fiscal 2022 with $6.3 billion of cash and investments and has already put that to work. So far this year, EA has spent a combined $4.7 billion to buy Glu Mobile, Codemasters, and Playdemic. These studios bring their own game development prowess and popular titles to accelerate EA's expansion into mobile.
\n
In fiscal 2021, EA's free cash flow came to $1.8 billion on $5.6 billion of revenue. EA started paying a dividend within the last year, which signals management's confidence in its growth strategy. The quarterly dividend amounts to $0.17 per share, bringing the current dividend yield to 0.48%. The company's growing sports lineup and willingness to return capital to shareholders makes it a top video game stock to consider buying.
\n
3. Tencent
\n
Tencent is the largest video game company in the world by revenue and also operates the popular WeChat social media platform in China. It owns Riot Games, the operator of one of the top esports titles in the world in League of Legends. It also has ownership stakes in several other companies, including Epic Games and Activision Blizzard.
\n
Gaming makes up 29% of its annual revenue, with online advertising, fintech, and business services composing most of the balance. But gaming is Tencent's largest business segment. It's the diversity of revenue streams across fast-growing markets, including gaming and cloud services, that make it a stock worth keeping on your radar.
\n
Over the last four quarters, Tencent generated $18.5 billion in free cash flow. It has $39 billion of dry powder on the balance sheet, in addition to a portfolio of investees that was worth over $200 billion in the first quarter. That's a lot of firepower.
\n
Tencent compares the current state of the video game industry to the movie business in the 1930s, and it's investing to maintain its leadership status. Last year, management announced a deep pipeline of 40 new titles, including internally developed and licensed games in development. It's particularly focusing on where gamers are spending more time, which is with big-budget, immersive gaming experiences.
\n
\"The development speed, scale, range, and depth of information technology is much greater than the last Industrial Revolution,\" said Senior Vice President Steven Ma. \"This brings unimaginable opportunities for games and the space is almost limitless.\"
\n
However, investors should note the risks of investing in Chinese companies. Tencent has come under scrutiny by regulators that have cracked down on \"inappropriate\" content in the company's games, but Tencent has been able to navigate through these obstacles and deliver market-beating returns to investors. Can it go on a run like Nvid","content":"
AMD is breaking out to multi-month highs and clearing range resistance. Can it go on a run like Nvidia has over the last few months?
\n
First it was Nvidia that enjoyed the big gains. It it now Advanced Micro Devices’ turn?
\n
Shares have risen 2.8% on Tuesday as the stock ishitting its highest levels since February.
\n
The stock was flirting with a move over range resistance on Monday, but is really pushing higher on Tuesday. The rally comes on positive reports regarding U.K. regulators and AMD’s acquisition of Xilinx.
\n
For its part, Xilinx shares are also hitting the highest levels since February.
\n
Nvidia and the VanEck Semiconductor ETF both hit new highs this week. With AMD stock continuing to consolidate and now making progresson its $35 billion acquisition, can it too break out to new highs?
\n
Let’s look at the chart.
\n
Trading AMD
\n
Weekly chart of AMD stock.
\n
In July 2020, AMD stock exploded over $60 resistance, quickly climbing to a high of $87.29 in just a couple of weeks.
\n
After that, the stock settled down, bouncing between $74 and $88. Eventually, AMD broke out to a new range, with $88 acting assupportinstead of resistance, and the $94 to $96 area acting as resistance.
\n
Interestingly, support eventually gave way and AMD fell back into prior trading range.
\n
As I mentioned in the opening part of the story, AMD is breaking out over $87 to $88 range resistance again as the stock is pushing to multi-month highs. Can it go on a run like Nvidia has over the last few months?\nFirst it was Nvidia that enjoyed the big gains. It it now Advanced Micro Devices’ turn?\nShares have risen 2.8% on Tuesday as the stock ishitting its highest levels since February.\nThe stock was flirting with a move over range resistance on Monday, but is really pushing higher on Tuesday. The rally comes on positive reports regarding U.K. regulators and AMD’s acquisition of Xilinx.\nFor its part, Xilinx shares are also hitting the highest levels since February.\nNvidia and the VanEck Semiconductor ETF both hit new highs this week. With AMD stock continuing to consolidate and now making progresson its $35 billion acquisition, can it too break out to new highs?\nLet’s look at the chart.\nTrading AMD\nWeekly chart of AMD stock.\nIn July 2020, AMD stock exploded over $60 resistance, quickly climbing to a high of $87.29 in just a couple of weeks.\nAfter that, the stock settled down, bouncing between $74 and $88. Eventually, AMD broke out to a new range, with $88 acting assupportinstead of resistance, and the $94 to $96 area acting as resistance.\nInterestingly, support eventually gave way and AMD fell back into prior trading range.\nAs I mentioned in the opening part of the story, AMD is breaking out over $87 to $88 range resistance again as the stock is pushing to multi-month highs. It’s also pushing through the 61.8% retracement.\nFrom here, bulls are looking for the $87 to $88 area to again turn from resistance into support. If that happens, the $94 to $96 area is certainly within reach.\nIf AMD can push through that zone, look for a test of the all-time high at $99.13 and then $100 above that.\nShould shares really get moving - like Nvidia did - then the $115 level could be in play near the 161.8% extension.\nOn the downside, a move back below $87 needs to be met by support from the 50-day moving average. Otherwise, $80 could be on the table.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":257,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":691658411,"gmtCreate":1640186771259,"gmtModify":1640186771455,"author":{"id":"3572656728096523","authorId":"3572656728096523","name":"babyshark","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3572656728096523","authorIdStr":"3572656728096523"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"And
