Fool","summary":"Hoping for a short squeeze? These stocks aren't your best bet.","content":"
Since the beginning of the year, the big story on Wall Street often hasn't been the pandemic. Rather, the buzz has been about the retail movement and the desire to seek out the next short squeeze.
\n
In simple terms, short-sellers are investors betting on a lower share price. Since a company's share price can't go below $0, gains are capped at 100% for pessimists. Conversely, given that there's no theoretical ceiling as to how high a stock's share price can fly, losses for short-sellers are unlimited. A short squeeze is a very short-term event that involves short-sellers rushing for the exit at once. To exit their position they'll need to buy shares, which only further exacerbates the potential runaway upside in a publicly traded company.
\n
The thing about investing for a short squeeze is that it's usually a poor strategy with few winners. Stocks with high short interest are often struggling businesses and rightly worth avoiding. Although the following five heavily short-sold stocks are all potentially on the short-squeeze radar for retail investors, I wouldn't expect a squeeze out of any of them.
\n

\n
\n
Nikola
\n
Even though electric vehicle (EV) stocks have been a favorite among millennial investors, Nikola (NASDAQ:NKLA) has attracted quite the following of pessimists. As of the end of June, more than 44.2 million shares were held short out of 191.3 million shares in its float. But this is the perfect example of a stock where pessimism is warranted.
\n
Despite there being room for plenty of EV manufacturers in the U.S. and abroad, Nikola has frequently broken Wall Street's and investors' trust. The company exaggerated the technological capabilities of its Nikola One electric semi truck, and its founder, Trevor Milton, stepped down from his role as executive chairman in a middle-of-the-night tweet.
\n
What's more, the Securities and Exchange Commission is also conducting an investigation into Nikola on the heels of a short-seller report from Hindenburg Research last year. Some of the allegations in that report were confirmed by a Nikola internal review.
\n
Building an EV company from the ground up is a difficult and cash-consuming process to begin with. Adding a public relations nightmare on top of it all makes this stock an easy avoid and likely kills its chances of a short squeeze.
\n

\n
\n
Riot Blockchain
\n
Though young investors love cryptocurrencies and virtually anything related to crypto, short-sellers have piled into cryptocurrency mining stock Riot Blockchain (NASDAQ:RIOT). There were roughly 20 million shares held short at the end of June, which compares to a tradable float of 72 million shares.
\n
Mining for Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) might sound like a winning strategy, but it comes with three major flaws. To begin with, Bitcoin has undergone three separate corrections of at least 80% over the past decade. Since mining companies are paid via block rewards (6.25 Bitcoins, at the moment), they're entirely reliant on the rising price of Bitcoin to push revenue and profits higher, rather than innovation.
\n
Secondly, the barrier to entry for cryptocurrency mining is nonexistent. Over time, Riot is going to face increasing competition to validate groups of transactions, known as a block, on Bitcoin's blockchain.
\n
The third issue is that Bitcoin's block rewards halve every four years. By 2024, the block reward will halve again to 3.125 Bitcoin from 6.25 Bitcoin. Essentially, crypto mining stocks like Riot Blockchain are competing for a shrinking pie, and they're entirely dependent on external factors. That doesn't sound like the recipe for a sustainable business model.
\n

\n
\n
Inovio Pharmaceuticals
\n
While most investors are rooting for clinical-stage biotech stocks to succeed, short-sellers have been piling on Inovio Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:INO). By the end of June, approximately 44.6 million shares were held short, relative to a tradable float of 206 million shares.
\n
On one hand, Inovio has an impressively large pipeline consisting of 11 different clinical-stage compounds. On the other hand, the company has been in business for more than four decades and it's yet to develop a therapy that's been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Inovio always seems to offer promise, but it's consistently failed to deliver.
\n
Another reason for skepticism is the company's experimental coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine, INO-4800. Though it initially looked as if Inovio would be a vaccine frontrunner in the U.S., the FDA placed a partial clinical hold on its phase 2/3 study and requested additional info on the vaccine and the company's delivery device, Cellectra. Months later, the U.S. federal government pulled funding for the company's proposed late-stage study, forcing it to seek an international trial.
\n
Even though anything could happen during clinical trials, skeptics are historically batting 1.000 with Inovio.
\n

\n
\n
Blink Charging
\n
A company with exceptionally high short interest that I don't believe has a realistic shot at a short squeeze is electric vehicle (EV) charging equipment and network provider Blink Charging (NASDAQ:BLNK). As of June 30, 12.2 million shares were held short, compared to a float of 36.1 million shares.
\n
As with Nikola, there's plenty of hype surrounding EVs and EV infrastructure, and there'll no doubt be winners. But Blink Charging is unlikely to be one of the winners, primarily because it's not investing any of its capital into research and development, at least based on what I (and you) can see from reading its quarterly 10-Q filings. Innovation is paramount when it comes to EVs and EV infrastructure.
\n
There's also virtually no barrier to entry when it comes to EV infrastructure. There's nothing specific about Blink's charging equipment or its networks that implies it'll be the go-to for green-focused cities and auto manufacturers.
\n
Currently on pace for a meager $12 million in full-year sales (per Wall Street), yet still lugging around a $1.3 billion market cap, Blink Charging is a good candidate to be pulverized by short-sellers.
\n

\n
\n
MicroStrategy
\n
Last, but certainly not least, is enterprise analytics software provider MicroStrategy (NASDAQ:MSTR). This high-flying company has a very small float of only 7.78 million shares, of which 2.14 million are currently held short.
\n
To be blunt, MicroStrategy is a software company in name only. That's because CEO Michael Saylor has seemingly ignored his company's analytics operations in favor of buying Bitcoin. As of June 21, Saylor's company owned 105,085 Bitcoins, with an aggregate cost of $2.741 billion (about $26,080 per Bitcoin).
\n
As I alluded earlier, Bitcoin has a tendency to enter protracted bear markets where it loses 80% or more of its value. It's already retraced about 50% from its all-time highs earlier this year. The issue is this: The bulk of MicroStrategy's funding to buy Bitcoin has come from issuing debt. In other words, Saylor has put his company billions of dollars into debt to buy an unproven, highly volatile asset.
\n
In addition, the company's enterprise software sales have declined for six consecutive years. You'd think the CEO would be focused on turning a tangible business around. However, Saylor seems to spend more time promoting Bitcoin on Twitter. Suffice it to say, MicroStrategy is unlikely to squeeze its short-sellers out of their positions.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
5 Heavily Short-Sold Stocks That Won't Squeeze
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n5 Heavily Short-Sold Stocks That Won't Squeeze\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-07-19 17:22 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Since the beginning of the year, the big story on Wall Street often hasn't been the pandemic. The company exaggerated the technological capabilities of its Nikola One electric semi truck, and its founder, Trevor Milton, stepped down from his role as executive chairman in a middle-of-the-night tweet.\nWhat's more, the Securities and Exchange Commission is also conducting an investigation into Nikola on the heels of a short-seller report from Hindenburg Research last year. Some of the allegations in that report were confirmed by a Nikola internal review.\nBuilding an EV company from the ground up is a difficult and cash-consuming process to begin with. Adding a public relations nightmare on top of it all makes this stock an easy avoid and likely kills its chances of a short squeeze.\n\nImage source: Getty Images.\nRiot Blockchain\nThough young investors love cryptocurrencies and virtually anything related to crypto, short-sellers have piled into cryptocurrency mining stock Riot Blockchain (NASDAQ:RIOT). There were roughly 20 million shares held short at the end of June, which compares to a tradable float of 72 million shares.\nMining for Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) might sound like a winning strategy, but it comes with three major flaws. To begin with, Bitcoin has undergone three separate corrections of at least 80% over the past decade. Since mining companies are paid via block rewards (6.25 Bitcoins, at the moment), they're entirely reliant on the rising price of Bitcoin to push revenue and profits higher, rather than innovation.\nSecondly, the barrier to entry for cryptocurrency mining is nonexistent. Over time, Riot is going to face increasing competition to validate groups of transactions, known as a block, on Bitcoin's blockchain.\nThe third issue is that Bitcoin's block rewards halve every four years. By 2024, the block reward will halve again to 3.125 Bitcoin from 6.25 Bitcoin. Essentially, crypto mining stocks like Riot Blockchain are competing for a shrinking pie, and they're entirely dependent on external factors. That doesn't sound like the recipe for a sustainable business model.\n\nImage source: Getty Images.\nInovio Pharmaceuticals\nWhile most investors are rooting for clinical-stage biotech stocks to succeed, short-sellers have been piling on Inovio Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:INO). By the end of June, approximately 44.6 million shares were held short, relative to a tradable float of 206 million shares.\nOn one hand, Inovio has an impressively large pipeline consisting of 11 different clinical-stage compounds. On the other hand, the company has been in business for more than four decades and it's yet to develop a therapy that's been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Inovio always seems to offer promise, but it's consistently failed to deliver.\nAnother reason for skepticism is the company's experimental coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine, INO-4800. Though it initially looked as if Inovio would be a vaccine frontrunner in the U.S., the FDA placed a partial clinical hold on its phase 2/3 study and requested additional info on the vaccine and the company's delivery device, Cellectra. Months later, the U.S. federal government pulled funding for the company's proposed late-stage study, forcing it to seek an international trial.\nEven though anything could happen during clinical trials, skeptics are historically batting 1.000 with Inovio.\n\nImage source: Getty Images.\nBlink Charging\nA company with exceptionally high short interest that I don't believe has a realistic shot at a short squeeze is electric vehicle (EV) charging equipment and network provider Blink Charging (NASDAQ:BLNK). As of June 30, 12.2 million shares were held short, compared to a float of 36.1 million shares.\nAs with Nikola, there's plenty of hype surrounding EVs and EV infrastructure, and there'll no doubt be winners. But Blink Charging is unlikely to be one of the winners, primarily because it's not investing any of its capital into research and development, at least based on what I (and you) can see from reading its quarterly 10-Q filings. Innovation is paramount when it comes to EVs and EV infrastructure.\nThere's also virtually no barrier to entry when it comes to EV infrastructure. There's nothing specific about Blink's charging equipment or its networks that implies it'll be the go-to for green-focused cities and auto manufacturers.\nCurrently on pace for a meager $12 million in full-year sales (per Wall Street), yet still lugging around a $1.3 billion market cap, Blink Charging is a good candidate to be pulverized by short-sellers.\n\nImage source: Getty Images.\nMicroStrategy\nLast, but certainly not least, is enterprise analytics software provider MicroStrategy (NASDAQ:MSTR). This high-flying company has a very small float of only 7.78 million shares, of which 2.14 million are currently held short.\nTo be blunt, MicroStrategy is a software company in name only. That's because CEO Michael Saylor has seemingly ignored his company's analytics operations in favor of buying Bitcoin. As of June 21, Saylor's company owned 105,085 Bitcoins, with an aggregate cost of $2.741 billion (about $26,080 per Bitcoin).\nAs I alluded earlier, Bitcoin has a tendency to enter protracted bear markets where it loses 80% or more of its value. It's already retraced about 50% from its all-time highs earlier this year. The issue is this: The bulk of MicroStrategy's funding to buy Bitcoin has come from issuing debt. In other words, Saylor has put his company billions of dollars into debt to buy an unproven, highly volatile asset.\nIn addition, the company's enterprise software sales have declined for six consecutive years. You'd think the CEO would be focused on turning a tangible business around. However, Saylor seems to spend more time promoting Bitcoin on Twitter. Suffice it to say, MicroStrategy is unlikely to squeeze its short-sellers out of their positions.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":482,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":173773762,"gmtCreate":1626691521656,"gmtModify":1631888838147,"author":{"id":"3572592743475560","authorId":"3572592743475560","name":"Asycroft","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3572592743475560","authorIdStr":"3572592743475560"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$MMEX Resources Corporation(MMEXD)$😭","listText":"$MMEX Resources Corporation(MMEXD)$😭","text":"$MMEX Resources Corporation(MMEXD)$😭","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2183b7435d35eeb4579727c3d7c7e4e3","width":"1440","height":"2560"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/173773762","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":207,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":179607350,"gmtCreate":1626511349970,"gmtModify":1631893807692,"author":{"id":"3572592743475560","authorId":"3572592743475560","name":"Asycroft","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3572592743475560","authorIdStr":"3572592743475560"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Patten Energy Solutions Group, Inc.(PTTN)$cannot sell","listText":"$Patten Energy Solutions Group, Inc.(PTTN)$cannot sell","text":"$Patten Energy Solutions Group, Inc.(PTTN)$cannot sell","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3b720581495423b1571f167347cca702","width":"1440","height":"2560"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/179607350","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":372,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":170411965,"gmtCreate":1626445451257,"gmtModify":1633926664632,"author":{"id":"3572592743475560","authorId":"3572592743475560","name":"Asycroft","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3572592743475560","authorIdStr":"3572592743475560"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$GameStop(GME)$woo","listText":"$GameStop(GME)$woo","text":"$GameStop(GME)$woo","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2f2a0bc3aa06ca488dba37dec4e817e4","width":"1440","height":"2560"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":5,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/170411965","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":443,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":170633651,"gmtCreate":1626425192973,"gmtModify":1633926859137,"author":{"id":"3572592743475560","authorId":"3572592743475560","name":"Asycroft","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3572592743475560","authorIdStr":"3572592743475560"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"NOT A DEAD CAT","listText":"NOT A DEAD CAT","text":"NOT A DEAD CAT","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":9,"commentSize":2,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/170633651","repostId":"1119858603","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":514,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":147633544,"gmtCreate":1626355378588,"gmtModify":1633927590184,"author":{"id":"3572592743475560","authorId":"3572592743475560","name":"Asycroft","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3572592743475560","authorIdStr":"3572592743475560"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Of course AVG down. The forces that drive price competition and bring down retail prices are bound to emerge as consumers seek out more deals and as firms refocus on locking in, if not expanding, their market share.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":336,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":142771123,"gmtCreate":1626180657762,"gmtModify":1631893807696,"author":{"id":"3572592743475560","authorId":"3572592743475560","name":"Asycroft","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3572592743475560","authorIdStr":"3572592743475560"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Patten Energy Solutions Group, Inc.(PTTN)$[流泪] ","listText":"$Patten Energy Solutions Group, Inc.(PTTN)$[流泪] ","text":"$Patten Energy Solutions Group, Inc.(PTTN)$[流泪]","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/7b44a552e196c9ad442aea9e8c3557bd","width":"1440","height":"2560"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/142771123","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":420,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":142451574,"gmtCreate":1626170665298,"gmtModify":1633929442143,"author":{"id":"3572592743475560","authorId":"3572592743475560","name":"Asycroft","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3572592743475560","authorIdStr":"3572592743475560"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Let's go!","listText":"Let's go!","text":"Let's go!","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/142451574","repostId":"1121575153","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":142,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":146776207,"gmtCreate":1626101483109,"gmtModify":1633930094459,"author":{"id":"3572592743475560","authorId":"3572592743475560","name":"Asycroft","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3572592743475560","authorIdStr":"3572592743475560"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"To the moon","listText":"To the moon","text":"To the moon","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":8,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/146776207","repostId":"1105917995","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":325,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":154017250,"gmtCreate":1625460322570,"gmtModify":1633940462661,"author":{"id":"3572592743475560","authorId":"3572592743475560","name":"Asycroft","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3572592743475560","authorIdStr":"3572592743475560"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Let's go ","listText":"Let's go ","text":"Let's go","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/154017250","repostId":"1193340451","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1193340451","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1625456464,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1193340451?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-07-05 11:41","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Bank of America: Billions are about to pour into EV infrastructure — and these stocks will benefit","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1193340451","media":"CNBC","summary":"Electric vehicle adoption is at an inflection point, according toBank of Americaanalysts who identified a new way to play the trend. An increasing need for EVcharging technologyis set to benefit a raft of global stocks, according to the bank, including semiconductor and Big Oil companies, as well as auto suppliers.\nBank of America analysts led by Harry Wyburd flagged a rapid rise in ownership of electric vehicles, with EVs on Europe’s roads up 100% since pre-Covid.\nIn a research note published last week, they wrote: “Our updated charger forecasts see c. [circa] $80bn of potential charging infrastructure investment by 2040E [estimate].”\nThe bank estimates there are currently around nine public charging points per 100 electric vehicles in Europe and expects the number to rise as more of the cars hit the road. BofA also expects “significant” growth in home charging points, with around 60 million electric connectors by 2030.\nBofA’s stock picks include:\nSemiconductors\n“We estimate that power semiconductor demand related to charger deployments in Europe can increase from low tens of millions of US dollars per annum to c$50m per annum by 2025 and c$100m per annum by 2030,” the analysts stated, pickingInfineonandSTMicroas beneficiaries of this.\nOil majors\nBig Oil can create “significant value” from “shifting their equity story to Big Energy,” with more of a focus on decarbonization, according to BofA. Its analysts noted the shift was becoming more urgent for these companies, given shareholder pressure and the Hague District Court’sdemands for Shellto meet climate targets set out in the Paris Agreement.\nThe analysts pickedBP,ShellandTotaland said: “We believe EV charging will grow in importance in linking Big Oil’s existing Marketing footprints (including global brand recognition and backing from their commodity trading desks) with Big Oils’ expansion into electricity supply.”\nAuto suppliers\nValeomakes parts for EVs of all sizes as well as a range of charging components for the likes ofVWand Mercedes. It is buy-rated by BofA, which noted that its joint venture withSiemensnow has around a 40% market share of the high voltage charging sector.\nMetals and mining\nCopper producerAntofagastaand minerBolidenare buy-rated picks for BofA, with copper likely to be a key part of EV chargers as well as inside the vehicle. “New technologies such as renewables, energy storage and electric vehicles that are gaining traction have one thing in common: they require a set of commodities we define as MIFTs, or metals important for future technologies,” BofA’s analysts wrote.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":244,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":152770870,"gmtCreate":1625360813890,"gmtModify":1633941335060,"author":{"id":"3572592743475560","authorId":"3572592743475560","name":"Asycroft","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3572592743475560","authorIdStr":"3572592743475560"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Nice","listText":"Nice","text":"Nice","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":7,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/152770870","repostId":"1188153141","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1188153141","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1625276221,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1188153141?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-07-03 09:37","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Suze Orman worries about a market crash — here's what you should do","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1188153141","media":"MoneyWise","summary":"As stock markets continue setting records, fallout from COVID-19 continues to create problems for th","content":"
As stock markets continue setting records, fallout from COVID-19 continues to create problems for the economy.
\n
That clash has worried investing experts, including Suze Orman, who's gone so far as to say she’s now preparing for an inevitable market crash.
\n
And a famous measurement popularized by Warren Buffett — known as the Buffett Indicator — shows Orman might be onto something.
\n
Here’s an explanation of where the concern is coming from and some techniques you can use tokeep your investment portfolio growingeven if the market goes south.
\n
What does Suze Orman think?
\n
Mediapunch/Shutterstock
\n
Suze Orman has avidly watched the market for decades. She knows ups and downs are to be expected, but what she’s seeing happen with investment fads like GameStop has her concerned.
\n
“I don’t like what I see happening in the market right now,” Orman said in a video for CNBC. “The economy has been horrible, but the stock market has been going.”
\n
While investing is as easy now asusing a smartphone app, Orman is concerned about where we can go from these record highs.
\n
And even with stimulus checks, which are still going out, and the real estate market breaking its own records last year, Orman worries about what will come with the coronavirus — especially as new variants continue to pop up.
\n
What's more, she feels it’s just been too long since the last crash to stay this high much longer.
\n
“This reminds me of 2000 all over again,” Orman says.
\n
The Buffett Indicator
\n
Larry W Smith/EPA/Shutterstock
\n
One metric Warren Buffett uses to assess the market so regularly that it’s been named after him has been flashing red for long enough that market watchers are starting to wonder if it’s an outdated tool.
\n
But the Buffett Indicator, a measurement of the ratio of the stock market’s total value against U.S. economic output, continues to climb to previously unseen levels.
\n
And those in the know are wondering if it's a sign that we’re about to see a hard fall.
\n
How to prepare for a crashFreedomz / Shutterstock
\n
Orman has three recommendations for setting up a simple investment strategy to help you successfully navigate any sharp turns in the market.
\n
1. Buy low
\n
Part of what upsets Orman so much about the furor over meme stocks like GameStop is it goes completely against the average investor’s interests.
\n
“All of you have your heads screwed on backwards,” she says. “All you want is for these markets to go up and up and up. What good is that going to do you?”
\n
She points out the only extra money most people have goes towardinvesting for retirementin their 401(k) or IRA plans.
\n
Because you probably don’t plan to touch that money for decades, the best long-term strategy is to buy low. That way, your dollar will go much further now, leaving plenty of room for growth over the next 20, 30 or 40 years.
\n
2. Invest on a schedule
\n
katjen / Shutterstock
\n
While she prefers to buy low, Orman doesn’t recommend you stop investing completely when the market goes up.
\n
She wants casual investors to not get caught up in the daily ups and downs of the market.
\n
In fact, cheering for downturns now may be your best bet at getting a larger piece of very profitable investments — like some lucky investors were able to do back in 2007 and 2008.
\n
“When the market went down, down, down you could buy things at nothing,” says Orman. “And now look at them 15 years later.”
\n
She suggests you set up a dollar-cost averaging strategy, which means you invest your money in equal portions at regular intervals, regardless of the market’s fluctuations.
\n
This kind of approach is easy to implement with any of the many investing apps currently available to DIY investors.
\n
There are even apps that willautomatically invest your spare changeby rounding up your debit and credit card purchases to the nearest dollar.
\n
3. Diversify with fractional shares
\n
To help weather dips in specific corners of the market, Orman suggests you diversify your investments — balance your portfolio with investments in many different types of assets and sectors of the economy.
\n
Orman particularly recommends fractional-share investing. This approach allows you to buy a slice of a share for a big-name company that you otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford.
\n
With the help of apopular stock-trading tool, anyone at any budget can afford the fractional share strategy.
\n
“The sooner you begin, the more money you will have,” says Orman. “Just don’t stop, and when these markets go down, you should be so happy because your dollars find more shares.”
\n
“And the more shares you have, the more money you’ll have 20, 40, 50 years from now.”
\n
What else you can do
\n
goodluz / Shutterstock
\n
Whether or not a big crash is around the corner, investors who are still decades out from retirement can make that work for them, Orman said in theCNBC video.
\n
First, prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Since the onset of the pandemic, Orman now recommends everyone have an emergency fund that can cover their expenses for a full year.
\n
Then, to set yourself up fora comfortable retirement, she suggests you opt for a Roth account, whether that’s a 401(k) or IRA.
\n
That will help you avoid paying tax when you take money out of your retirement account because your contributions to a Roth account are made after tax. Traditional IRAs, on the other hand, aren’t taxed when you make contributions, so you’ll end up paying later.
\n
If you find you need a little more guidance, working with aprofessional financial adviser, can help point you in the right direction so you can confidently ride out any market volatility.
\n
While everyone else is veering off course or overcorrecting, you’ll be firmly in the driver’s seat with your sunset years planned for.
","source":"lsy1621813427262","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; She knows ups and downs are to be expected, but what she’s seeing happen with investment fads like GameStop has her concerned.\n“I don’t like what I see happening in the market right now,” Orman said in a video for CNBC. “The economy has been horrible, but the stock market has been going.”\nWhile investing is as easy now asusing a smartphone app, Orman is concerned about where we can go from these record highs.\nAnd even with stimulus checks, which are still going out, and the real estate market breaking its own records last year, Orman worries about what will come with the coronavirus — especially as new variants continue to pop up.\nWhat's more, she feels it’s just been too long since the last crash to stay this high much longer.\n“This reminds me of 2000 all over again,” Orman says.\nThe Buffett Indicator\nLarry W Smith/EPA/Shutterstock\nOne metric Warren Buffett uses to assess the market so regularly that it’s been named after him has been flashing red for long enough that market watchers are starting to wonder if it’s an outdated tool.\nBut the Buffett Indicator, a measurement of the ratio of the stock market’s total value against U.S. economic output, continues to climb to previously unseen levels.\nAnd those in the know are wondering if it's a sign that we’re about to see a hard fall.\nHow to prepare for a crashFreedomz / Shutterstock\nOrman has three recommendations for setting up a simple investment strategy to help you successfully navigate any sharp turns in the market.\n1. Buy low\nPart of what upsets Orman so much about the furor over meme stocks like GameStop is it goes completely against the average investor’s interests.\n“All of you have your heads screwed on backwards,” she says. “All you want is for these markets to go up and up and up. What good is that going to do you?”\nShe points out the only extra money most people have goes towardinvesting for retirementin their 401(k) or IRA plans.\nBecause you probably don’t plan to touch that money for decades, the best long-term strategy is to buy low. That way, your dollar will go much further now, leaving plenty of room for growth over the next 20, 30 or 40 years.\n2. Invest on a schedule\nkatjen / Shutterstock\nWhile she prefers to buy low, Orman doesn’t recommend you stop investing completely when the market goes up.\nShe wants casual investors to not get caught up in the daily ups and downs of the market.\nIn fact, cheering for downturns now may be your best bet at getting a larger piece of very profitable investments — like some lucky investors were able to do back in 2007 and 2008.\n“When the market went down, down, down you could buy things at nothing,” says Orman. “And now look at them 15 years later.”\nShe suggests you set up a dollar-cost averaging strategy, which means you invest your money in equal portions at regular intervals, regardless of the market’s fluctuations.\nThis kind of approach is easy to implement with any of the many investing apps currently available to DIY investors.\nThere are even apps that willautomatically invest your spare changeby rounding up your debit and credit card purchases to the nearest dollar.\n3. Diversify with fractional shares\nTo help weather dips in specific corners of the market, Orman suggests you diversify your investments — balance your portfolio with investments in many different types of assets and sectors of the economy.\nOrman particularly recommends fractional-share investing. This approach allows you to buy a slice of a share for a big-name company that you otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford.\nWith the help of apopular stock-trading tool, anyone at any budget can afford the fractional share strategy.\n“The sooner you begin, the more money you will have,” says Orman. “Just don’t stop, and when these markets go down, you should be so happy because your dollars find more shares.”\n“And the more shares you have, the more money you’ll have 20, 40, 50 years from now.”\nWhat else you can do\ngoodluz / Shutterstock\nWhether or not a big crash is around the corner, investors who are still decades out from retirement can make that work for them, Orman said in theCNBC video.\nFirst, prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Since the onset of the pandemic, Orman now recommends everyone have an emergency fund that can cover their expenses for a full year.\nThen, to set yourself up fora comfortable retirement, she suggests you opt for a Roth account, whether that’s a 401(k) or IRA.\nThat will help you avoid paying tax when you take money out of your retirement account because your contributions to a Roth account are made after tax. Traditional IRAs, on the other hand, aren’t taxed when you make contributions, so you’ll end up paying later.\nIf you find you need a little more guidance, working with aprofessional financial adviser, can help point you in the right direction so you can confidently ride out any market volatility.\nWhile everyone else is veering off course or overcorrecting, you’ll be firmly in the driver’s seat with your sunset years planned for.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":166,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":152770066,"gmtCreate":1625360781355,"gmtModify":1631886370360,"author":{"id":"3572592743475560","authorId":"3572592743475560","name":"Asycroft","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3572592743475560","authorIdStr":"3572592743475560"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$CBD Life Sciences Inc.(CBDL)$this sucks","listText":"$CBD Life Sciences Inc.(CBDL)$this sucks","text":"$CBD Life Sciences Inc.(CBDL)$this sucks","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c71500d5f3147fee14663651c5af946f","width":"1440","height":"2560"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/152770066","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":125,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":152747160,"gmtCreate":1625360746750,"gmtModify":1633941336229,"author":{"id":"3572592743475560","authorId":"3572592743475560","name":"Asycroft","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3572592743475560","authorIdStr":"3572592743475560"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Very Lame","listText":"Very Lame","text":"Very Lame","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ed990bd503dfcf271b1ca5afea51ca59","width":"1440","height":"4401"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/152747160","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":193,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":158975327,"gmtCreate":1625126963369,"gmtModify":1633944509776,"author":{"id":"3572592743475560","authorId":"3572592743475560","name":"Asycroft","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3572592743475560","authorIdStr":"3572592743475560"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Hopefully it'll rise again today","listText":"Hopefully it'll rise again today","text":"Hopefully it'll rise again today","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":2,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/158975327","repostId":"2148849816","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":375,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":158979856,"gmtCreate":1625126782875,"gmtModify":1633944514217,"author":{"id":"3572592743475560","authorId":"3572592743475560","name":"Asycroft","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3572592743475560","authorIdStr":"3572592743475560"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Nice","listText":"Nice","text":"Nice","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/158979856","repostId":"1106223449","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1106223449","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1625122086,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1106223449?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-07-01 14:48","market":"us","language":"en","title":"The S&P 500 Notches Its Second-Best First Half Since the Dot-Com Bubble. Since 1998, only 2019’s 17.4% first-half surge has been larger.
\n
The market got a boost from Covid-19 vaccinations, which have helped the U.S. economy reopen, while trillions of dollars of fiscal stimulus have helped shore up demand. Others worry that U.S. economic growth could slow faster than investors anticipate, causing a pullback in the process.
\n
For those who take that view, there is no better time to back away from the stock market than the present. That period included Black Monday, when the S&P 500 dropped 20% in one day, still a record loss. While selling linked to so-called portfolio insurance was ultimately blamed for the size and speed of the loss, the second half of 1987 was a period of rising bond yields and high stock-market valuations, just like the first half of 2021.
\n
Still, the market has been acting like it wants to go higher, not lower. Pullbacks, a normal event in the midst of bull runs, have been mild in 2021, with the largest drops being less than 4%. “What the [S&P 500] has done throughout 2021 is pick itself up when and where it has needed to, maintaining an uptrend all along,” writes Frank Cappelleri, chief market technician at Instinet.
\n
That 6.3% average second-half rise would push the S&P 500’s full-year gain to around 23%. As yields moved up, stocks, particularly high-multiple megacap stocks, moved down. If yields dropped, tech rallied.\nThat relationship has broken down.\nYields have been down three days in a row, yet tech did not react.\nMegacap tech like Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Micron, and Xilinx were down 1.5% to 3%.\nMore importantly, the market's favoritehigh-growth names got clobbered.\nWood'sARK Innovation Fund (ARKK), a bellwether for the big-growth tech crowd, was down 5% and is now 28% off the 52-week high it hit on February 16, which is just when interest rates starting moving up.\nArk Innovation Fund on Wednesday\n(largest holdings)\n\nCrispr down 9%\nBaidu down 9%\nZoom down 7%\nRokudown 7%\nTeladoc down 6%.\n\n\"You'd think with all this stimulus, money would be pouring into Cathie Wood [funds], and it's just not happening,\" Josh Brown, CEO of Ritholtz Wealth Management, said on CNBC.\n Are retail traders losing interest?\nOne major surprise has been a pullback in volume. The NYSE volume was 80% of the 30-day average, Nasdaq activity was 90% of the average, unusually low volume given the declines in certain sectors.\n\"Volume was heavy for Triple Witching last Friday, but Monday, Tuesday and today volumes have been light,\" Rich Repetto from Piper Sandler told me\nHave retail traders, who have been such a large part of the increase in volume last year, suddenly lost interest?\n\"It seems to show that the retail customer has walked away,\" Matt Maley from Miller Tabak told me. \"The question is, why? Is it higher rates? Concerns about lockdowns? Or are they betting on March Madness?\"\nAnother example: Reddit favorite GameStop wasdown all day on disappointing earningsbut collapsed going into the close, down 33%. But only 23 million shares changed hands, well short of the 30-day average of 34 million shares.\nLow volume on a big down day implies not a lot of owners interested in selling, but also not many buyers interested in purchasing, even with shares down over 30%.\nSame with another Reddit-crowd favorite: AMC, down 15% on volume two-thirds of its average.\nIs Cathie Wood the key?\nFor the high-beta, high-growth, high-momentum crowd, watching Wood has been an obsession. Maley says the flagship Ark Innovation fund is now set up for a key technical test.\n\n\"The closing low for ARK was $110.26 on March 8th,\" he told me. It bounced nicely off of that, but has been trending down for the last week, Maley noted.\n\"It closed today at $114. If it drops below that $110 level, that will be very negative on a technical basis,\" with the trader noting that a \"lower low\" is usually a negative indicator.\n\"If buy on weakness doesn't work this time, that is going to worry a lot of people,\" Maley said.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":172,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"3577856128840768","authorId":"3577856128840768","name":"KamenRider","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a2f699db0bfbdac787144690340af5e1","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"idStr":"3577856128840768","authorIdStr":"3577856128840768"},"content":"brother just keep holding those bananas","text":"brother just keep holding those bananas","html":"brother just keep holding those bananas"}],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":146776207,"gmtCreate":1626101483109,"gmtModify":1633930094459,"author":{"id":"3572592743475560","authorId":"3572592743475560","name":"Asycroft","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3572592743475560","authorIdStr":"3572592743475560"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"To the moon","listText":"To the moon","text":"To the moon","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":8,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/146776207","repostId":"1105917995","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":325,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":147633544,"gmtCreate":1626355378588,"gmtModify":1633927590184,"author":{"id":"3572592743475560","authorId":"3572592743475560","name":"Asycroft","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3572592743475560","authorIdStr":"3572592743475560"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Of course AVG down. The video game retailer plummeted 27% on Thursday, but it moved nicely higher the other four days of the week -- trimming its weeklong decline to just 6%.
\n
AMC closed out the week with a 3% gain, following the 83% burst higher the week before. The multiplex operator is benefiting from a surge in box office receipts, but they continue to track at less than half of where the industry was two years ago.
\n
Finally we have Carnival sinking 2% for the week. Cruise stocks have been buoyant ahead of a return to sailing this month, but we're already seeing COVID-19 cases pop up in the limited number of voyages taking place so far.
\n
\n
Those three stocks averaged a 1.7% decline for the week. The S&P 500 rose by 0.4% in that time, so I won. Right now, I see Royal Caribbean (NYSE:RCL), AMC Entertainment Holdings, and Osprey Bitcoin Trust (OTC:OBTC) as vulnerable investments in the near term. Here's why I think these are three stocks to avoid this week.
\n
\n
1. Royal Caribbean
\n
This was supposed to be the summer that the cruise industry finally roars back into being, but we're already seeing some choppy waters. Royal Caribbean's Celebrity Millennium became the first major cruise ship available to North American seafarers earlier this month since the industry shut down last March. A few days into the maiden voyage, a pair of passengers contracted the COVID-19 virus.
\n
There's also an operational standoff in Royal Caribbean's home state of Florida, where the governor is threatening to fine cruise lines for requiring vaccinations of its passengers. It's a Catch-22 for the industry, as the CDC requires at least 95% of a ship's passengers to be fully vaccinated to resume sailings without having to go through a series of costly test cruises.
\n
Royal Caribbean is my favorite of the three cruise lines as an investment, but it's also held up the best during the lull. With the reopening off to a bumpy start it also makes the stock vulnerable here.
\n
2. AMC Entertainment
\n
I'm a fan of a lot that AMC Entertainment has done to get bet better at a time when many of its smaller rivals have been merely walking in place. The country's largest multiplex operator has upped its seat reservations and mobile order tech and carved out a new revenue stream with actively promoted private rentals. The new Investor Connect program is sheer genius, monetizing its newborn attention as a meme stock with millions of retail investors by trying to convert them into customers.
\n
However, after ballooning its share count north of 500 million -- and the stock still moving higher -- there will eventually be a price to be paid in terms of valuation. AMC Entertainment enters this week with an enterprise value above $35 billion, and sooner or later someone is going to have to pay the tab at the end of the party.
\n
AMC is doing the right things to stay on top of a declining industry, but it's not enough to justify today's sticker price. This has historically been a low-margin business -- in the low single digits for net margin most years -- despite the markup on concessions. You'll see a year-over-year bounce this year, but we may never return to 2019 as a baseline. Theatrical release windows are being shattered by streaming initiatives. AMC has bloated its debt levels and share count to stay alive, but all of this comes at a price that right now seems too dear to pay.
\n
3. Osprey Bitcoin Trust
\n
I believe in keeping a small percent of your risk-tolerant portfolio in crypto, but not every vehicle is in the same boat. Osprey Bitcoin Trust offers investors a low-cost way to play the popularity of Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) in a stock exchange-listed vehicle.
\n
Osprey Bitcoin Trust is a lot smaller than the market's original Bitcoin-owning trust, and it's also trading at an unsustainable premium. Osprey's mark-up to its stake of Bitcoin tokens has been contracting since hitting the market earlier this year, and I was starting to get interested when the premium narrowed to 12% a week ago.
\n
The mark-up is going the wrong way again. Osprey Bitcoin Trust owns what is currently $12.68 in Bitcoin, but it closed last week at $14.95. Is an 18% premium worth it when the much larger -- but admittedly more high-cost -- Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (OTC:GBTC) is fetching an 11% discount to its net asset value?
\n
If you're looking for safe stocks, you aren't likely to find them in Royal Caribbean, AMC Entertainment, and Osprey Bitcoin Trust this week.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
3 Stocks to Avoid This Week
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n3 Stocks to Avoid This Week\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-06-15 09:10 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
In last week's article on three stocks to avoid, I predicted that GameStop (NYSE:GME), AMC Entertainment Holdings (NYSE:AMC), and Carnival (NYSE:CCL) would have a rough few days.\n\nGameStop lived up to...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"GME":"游戏驿站","OBTC":"Osprey Bitcoin Trust","CCL":"嘉年华邮轮","AMC":"AMC院线"},"source_url":"https://www.fool.com/investing/2021/06/14/3-stocks-to-avoid-this-week/","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"2143178756","content_text":"In last week's article on three stocks to avoid, I predicted that GameStop (NYSE:GME), AMC Entertainment Holdings (NYSE:AMC), and Carnival (NYSE:CCL) would have a rough few days.\n\nGameStop lived up to my prediction on tumbling the day after reporting quarterly results, something that has now happened in 10 of the past 11 reports. The video game retailer plummeted 27% on Thursday, but it moved nicely higher the other four days of the week -- trimming its weeklong decline to just 6%.\nAMC closed out the week with a 3% gain, following the 83% burst higher the week before. The multiplex operator is benefiting from a surge in box office receipts, but they continue to track at less than half of where the industry was two years ago.\nFinally we have Carnival sinking 2% for the week. Cruise stocks have been buoyant ahead of a return to sailing this month, but we're already seeing COVID-19 cases pop up in the limited number of voyages taking place so far.\n\nThose three stocks averaged a 1.7% decline for the week. The S&P 500 rose by 0.4% in that time, so I won. Right now, I see Royal Caribbean (NYSE:RCL), AMC Entertainment Holdings, and Osprey Bitcoin Trust (OTC:OBTC) as vulnerable investments in the near term. Here's why I think these are three stocks to avoid this week.\nImage source: Getty Images.\n1. Royal Caribbean\nThis was supposed to be the summer that the cruise industry finally roars back into being, but we're already seeing some choppy waters. Royal Caribbean's Celebrity Millennium became the first major cruise ship available to North American seafarers earlier this month since the industry shut down last March. A few days into the maiden voyage, a pair of passengers contracted the COVID-19 virus.\nThere's also an operational standoff in Royal Caribbean's home state of Florida, where the governor is threatening to fine cruise lines for requiring vaccinations of its passengers. It's a Catch-22 for the industry, as the CDC requires at least 95% of a ship's passengers to be fully vaccinated to resume sailings without having to go through a series of costly test cruises.\nRoyal Caribbean is my favorite of the three cruise lines as an investment, but it's also held up the best during the lull. With the reopening off to a bumpy start it also makes the stock vulnerable here.\n2. AMC Entertainment\nI'm a fan of a lot that AMC Entertainment has done to get bet better at a time when many of its smaller rivals have been merely walking in place. The country's largest multiplex operator has upped its seat reservations and mobile order tech and carved out a new revenue stream with actively promoted private rentals. If you owned the stock coming into 2021, it was a lot of fun watching the per-share price go from about $17 to the current $212.
\n
But you shouldn't get lulled into buying the hype surrounding this meme stock. The run was partly fueled by a Reddit group, which promoted the stock and also created a short squeeze that led the price higher. That makes for great headlines, but there are strong reasons to avoid getting pulled in.
\n
Trying to transition
\n
GameStop, which sells video game consoles and software, was already experiencing weakening sales heading into 2020. Same-store sales (comps) fell by 19.4% in 2019, following that up with a 9.5% drop last year.
\n
While the company was experiencing strong sales growth for a long time, the last few years have been rough. It posted negative comps in four out of the last five years. That's due in no small part to a world that is changing, and people can increasingly download games from a variety of reputable companies such as Epic Games, Steam, Microsoft, and Sony.
\n
A major investor saw an opportunity to turn around GameStop's fortunes. RC Ventures, headed by Ryan Cohen, founder of the online company Chewy, built a 13% ownership in the company. He is now chairman of GameStop and has made key management changes, including hiring a new CEO and CFO who previously worked for Amazon.
\n
Clearly, Cohen has committed his financial resources and time to making GameStop successful. While he built up impressive credentials at Chewy, which PetSmart bought for $3.4 billion (and still owns a majority stake in despite taking the company public), can he work his magic this time around?
\n
Don't get fooled
\n
It's a tough road to get GameStop moving in the right direction. Management didn't provide a comparable sales figure, but the fiscal first quarter's top line did increase by better than 25% to $1.3 billion for the period ended on May 1. But you shouldn't get overly excited by this impressive headline figure.
\n
It is difficult to make year-over-year comparisons since the company cut its store base by 12%. While this would make the sales growth seem more impressive, remember, GameStop was forced to close stores last year due to the pandemic. So this depressed the year-ago figure. Then, the current period benefited from Sony and Microsoft releasing new game consoles last year. This will prove to be a temporary lift since it's a one-time purchase.
\n
The company will need to follow this up with improved game sales. However, software sales were down during the period. While the company blamed this on lower used game inventory, it has gotten a boost in the past when companies released new systems. If you owned the stock coming into 2021, it was a lot of fun watching the per-share price go from about $17 to the current $212.\nBut you shouldn't get lulled into buying the hype surrounding this meme stock. The run was partly fueled by a Reddit group, which promoted the stock and also created a short squeeze that led the price higher. That makes for great headlines, but there are strong reasons to avoid getting pulled in.\nTrying to transition\nGameStop, which sells video game consoles and software, was already experiencing weakening sales heading into 2020. Same-store sales (comps) fell by 19.4% in 2019, following that up with a 9.5% drop last year.\nWhile the company was experiencing strong sales growth for a long time, the last few years have been rough. It posted negative comps in four out of the last five years. That's due in no small part to a world that is changing, and people can increasingly download games from a variety of reputable companies such as Epic Games, Steam, Microsoft, and Sony.\nA major investor saw an opportunity to turn around GameStop's fortunes. RC Ventures, headed by Ryan Cohen, founder of the online company Chewy, built a 13% ownership in the company. He is now chairman of GameStop and has made key management changes, including hiring a new CEO and CFO who previously worked for Amazon.\nClearly, Cohen has committed his financial resources and time to making GameStop successful. While he built up impressive credentials at Chewy, which PetSmart bought for $3.4 billion (and still owns a majority stake in despite taking the company public), can he work his magic this time around?\nDon't get fooled\nIt's a tough road to get GameStop moving in the right direction. Management didn't provide a comparable sales figure, but the fiscal first quarter's top line did increase by better than 25% to $1.3 billion for the period ended on May 1. But you shouldn't get overly excited by this impressive headline figure.\nIt is difficult to make year-over-year comparisons since the company cut its store base by 12%. While this would make the sales growth seem more impressive, remember, GameStop was forced to close stores last year due to the pandemic. So this depressed the year-ago figure. Then, the current period benefited from Sony and Microsoft releasing new game consoles last year. This will prove to be a temporary lift since it's a one-time purchase.\nThe company will need to follow this up with improved game sales. However, software sales were down during the period. While the company blamed this on lower used game inventory, it has gotten a boost in the past when companies released new systems. This suggests that GameStop's hope for a multi-year bounce from the new systems is already facing hurdles.\nDetails lacking\nWhile the new management team has online e-commerce experience, details on a plan forward remain lacking. Undoubtedly, that is coming as the executives meet and figure out where they want to go. However, with stiff online competition, it is tough to invest in the company without knowing how it will turn itself around and get sales back to sustained profitability.\nThat's why you should leave GameStop's shares on the shelf.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":44,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":357524119,"gmtCreate":1617286132431,"gmtModify":1634521601906,"author":{"id":"3572592743475560","authorId":"3572592743475560","name":"Asycroft","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3572592743475560","authorIdStr":"3572592743475560"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"If you sell, you can't have a squeeze. Here are three great ones.
\n
\n
Introduction
\n
On a recent Bloomberg video call, Ray Dalio suggested that the Fed will have a lot of trouble doing any rate hike without having significantly adverse effects on stocks.
\n
Following the Fed meeting last week, the news that rates might be raised in two years rather than three gave the markets a jolt, as the message was interpreted as hawkish by the investing community.
\n
This caused Jerome Powell to backpedal, reminding everyone of his favorite word: \"transitory\". It was important that he once again reminded everyone that inflation would head back to 2%, and that nobody needs to worry.
\n
He did cover his 6 however, stating:
\n
\n We have to be very humble about our ability to really try to draw a signal out of it [...] It might take some patience to really see what’s happening.\n
\n
\n Larry Summers had adifferent take on it: \n I don't think the arithmetic is terribly difficult.\n
\n
\n You're looking at an average GDP gap deficit to potential GDP of 2%, and we're looking at a 14% of GDP fiscal stimulus. [...] The important question is whether there is 6 points of transitory inflation or 2 points of transitory inflation.\n
\n
This idea is very important. Rather than asking whether inflation is transitory or not, we should be asking how much of it is transitory.
\n
And this is where the risk currently lies. While the S&P 500 (SPY) performed a roundtrip from 4250 to 4250 with a 90 point drop in between, a lot of the more cyclical stocks took a hit which put them back in our \"Buy List\".
\n
Our take is that the Fed is realizing that it can't really increase rates without causing ruckus in markets.
\n
When you add this to the fact that they might not have any choice but to keep printing money to buy bonds as the supply of bonds might overshoot the demand of these from foreign countries who already hold lots of US debt and show limited interest in purchasing the debt at negative real interest rates. This is according to Ray Dalio in the same call with Larry Summers mentioned above.
\n
The risk of monetary inflation is very real. The likelihood of demand to continue increasing dramatically as money stored in financial markets hits the economy is also very high.
\n
What we've learned in investing, is that investors are too eager to wrap up a trade and move on to the \"next thing\". Many times, this is shortsighted, as even when the train has left the station, there is a lot of track left ahead.
\n
This is one of these situations.
\n
Valuations in high quality blue chips which are sensitive to the economy reopening are still so far from pre-Covid levels.
\n
The fact that they are taking a breather doesn't detract from their ultimate destination, which is a lot higher.
\n
In this article I highlight 3 such stocks.
\n
Plus in the meantime you get to sleep well at night, knowing that they offer a great combination of dividend yield and dividend growth.
\n
Heads you win, tails you win more.
\n
IBM (IBM)
\n
While IBM has increased from our latest mention of it in a public article, when we were purchasing the stock at a 5%+ yield, it still hovers just below our target \"Buy Below\" price of $150, courtesy of a small pull back last week.
\n
Source: Dividend Freedom Tribe.
\n
Dividend growth has come to a stand still, and while we loaded up lower, it is still a great opportunity.
\n
The real value lies in the fact that investors are not pricing Krishna's operational excellence since taking over.
\n
IBM stunned investors with its Q1 results. Fellow author Virginia Backaitis states in her excellent articleanalyzing IBM'soperations:
\n
\n I like how Krishna is thinking, and I like former Red Hat CEO Jim Whitehurst at his side. They are making purchases that align with IBM's strategy which hasn't always been the case at the company. The product lines that IBM is selling off now are smart choices... and they have others left to sell (but maybe there isn't a buyer).\n
\n
This value will likely be realized following the spin-off of the legacy business into an entity which will benamed kyndryl.
\n
Investors will likely be left with a high yield managed infrastructure business, and a low yield high growth cloud stock.
\n
When it happens, we'll decide which of both we'll hold onto, but we're quite confident that the two pieces will be worth than the sum of the part.
\n
And while you wait for this, you still get paid 4.5% by a super safe Blue Chip stock, which has the pricing power to fight inflation.
\n
KeyCorp (KEY)
\n
One thing the last round of stress tests showed, was that US banks are resilient, and well capitalized. Yet last week they took a hit after the fed meeting. This week stress tests will be released, and most large banks are expected to do really well.
\n
After that, dividend increases will come in July as banks are eager to start returning wealth to shareholders.
\n
Keycorp is no exception. For an analysis of KEY's earnings development you can read Sheen Bay Research'sarticleon the stock.
\n
Where I differ from his opinion is on the question of the dividend. While he doesn't expect a dividend hike, I expect all major banks to compete in their dividend increases.
\n
What investors must not forget is that in 2008 KEY paid a dividend of $0.38 per quarter, or double the current dividend.
\n
Since then, the company has been slowly redeeming itself, increasing the dividend every year.
\n
The pandemic restrictions stopped KEY in their tracks.
\n
A look at our MAD Chart shows how eager the bank was at returning capital to shareholders in the past 10 years. Each time the dividend increases, the inferred value ranges shown on the MAD chart goes up.
\n
In the past 10 years the dividend grew at 20% per annum, the rate dropped to 15% in the past 5 years, hindered by 0 growth last year.
\n
Source: Dividend Freedom Tribe.
\n
I believe that a 10-15% increase is very likely this year.
\n
In this event, KEY's current yield of 3.6% would effectively become a 4% yield.
\n
But to get fantastic income from KEY, you don't even need that much growth.
\n
At a 3.6% yield, if you can get 7.5% annual dividend growth you get a fantastic income opportunity.
\n
Let's look at a simulation.
\n
Let's suggest a $10K investment in KEY, with dividends reinvested and dividend growth of 7.5% per annum.
\n
In year 10, you'd expect $1,004 of income, or 10% of your original investment, which is our threshold for a \"great\" income opportunity.
\n
Source: Dividend Freedom Tribe.
\n
In our mind there is no way that KEY doesn't grow at this rate, which would suggest hitting its pre 2008 dividend in 10 years.
\n
As such we believe KEY to be a great pick for income investors. As KEY's dividend growth is on the back of growth in earnings and tangible book value per share, there is no doubt in our mind that sooner or later, the price will catch up with the higher income. The fed stress tests might be the catalyst banks need to move higher.
\n
In the meantime get paid to wait.
\n
Chevron (CVX)
\n
Chevron is another stock which is hovering just below our target \"Buy Below\" price.
\n
Source: Dividend Freedom Tribe.
\n
We're surprised that the oil trade is taking so long to play out. In late 2015, early 2016, the recovery to historically normal yields was a lot faster.
\n
Yet CVX still yields 5%, after proving its resilience, superior balance sheet and increasing the dividend by 4% this year, sustaining their history of higher dividends every year for the past three decades.
\n
Consider the following slide from their latestearnings call:
\n
Source: Earnings Call.
\n
At $40 brent, the dividend is covered with a little extra debt. As the energy major with the best balance sheet, it can afford this. At $60 brent, there would be excess cash above $25bn, or enough to fund the dividend for two and a half years.
\n
Brent is currently above $70. The longer it stays above that level, the higher the likelihood that CVX will actually have the excess cash suggested in the latter scenario.
\n
Back in August last year we suggested that you'll belaughing your wayto the bank with CVX's 6% yield.
\n
Since then, CVX has marginally beaten the S&P 500, but is far from over.
\n
In the past 10 years CVX has yielded a median 3.86%. Its forward outlook is arguably better now than it was in much of the past decade, which had the energy market dealing with endemic oversupply. Here are three great ones.\n\nIntroduction\nOn a recent Bloomberg video call, Ray Dalio suggested that the Fed will have a lot of trouble doing any rate hike without having significantly adverse effects on stocks.\nFollowing the Fed meeting last week, the news that rates might be raised in two years rather than three gave the markets a jolt, as the message was interpreted as hawkish by the investing community.\nThis caused Jerome Powell to backpedal, reminding everyone of his favorite word: \"transitory\". It was important that he once again reminded everyone that inflation would head back to 2%, and that nobody needs to worry.\nHe did cover his 6 however,stating:\n\nWe have to be very humble about our ability to really try to draw a signal out of it [...] It might take some patience to really see what’s happening.\n\n\n Larry Summers had adifferent take on it: \n I don't think the arithmetic is terribly difficult.\n\n\n You're looking at an average GDP gap deficit to potential GDP of 2%, and we're looking at a 14% of GDP fiscal stimulus. [...] The important question is whether there is 6 points of transitory inflation or 2 points of transitory inflation.\n\nThis idea is very important. Rather than asking whether inflation is transitory or not, we should be asking how much of it is transitory.\nAnd this is where the risk currently lies. While the S&P 500 (SPY) performed a roundtrip from 4250 to 4250 with a 90 point drop in between, a lot of the more cyclical stocks took a hit which put them back in our \"Buy List\".\nOur take is that the Fed is realizing that it can't really increase rates without causing ruckus in markets.\nWhen you add this to the fact that they might not have any choice but to keep printing money to buy bonds as the supply of bonds might overshoot the demand of these from foreign countries who already hold lots of US debt and show limited interest in purchasing the debt at negative real interest rates. This is according to Ray Dalio in the same call with Larry Summers mentioned above.\nThe risk of monetary inflation is very real. The likelihood of demand to continue increasing dramatically as money stored in financial markets hits the economy is also very high.\nWhat we've learned in investing, is that investors are too eager to wrap up a trade and move on to the \"next thing\". Many times, this is shortsighted, as even when the train has left the station, there is a lot of track left ahead.\nThis is one of these situations.\nValuations in high quality blue chips which are sensitive to the economy reopening are still so far from pre-Covid levels.\nThe fact that they are taking a breather doesn't detract from their ultimate destination, which is a lot higher.\nIn this article I highlight 3 such stocks.\nPlus in the meantime you get to sleep well at night, knowing that they offer a great combination of dividend yield and dividend growth.\nHeads you win, tails you win more.\nIBM (IBM)\nWhile IBM has increased from our latest mention of it in a public article, when we were purchasing the stock at a 5%+ yield, it still hovers just below our target \"Buy Below\" price of $150, courtesy of a small pull back last week.\nSource: Dividend Freedom Tribe.\nDividend growth has come to a stand still, and while we loaded up lower, it is still a great opportunity.\nThe real value lies in the fact that investors are not pricing Krishna's operational excellence since taking over.\nIBM stunned investors with its Q1 results. Fellow author Virginia Backaitis states in her excellent articleanalyzing IBM'soperations:\n\nI like how Krishna is thinking, and I like former Red Hat CEO Jim Whitehurst at his side. They are making purchases that align with IBM's strategy which hasn't always been the case at the company. The product lines that IBM is selling off now are smart choices... and they have others left to sell (but maybe there isn't a buyer).\n\nThis value will likely be realized following the spin-off of the legacy business into an entity which will benamed kyndryl.\nInvestors will likely be left with a high yield managed infrastructure business, and a low yield high growth cloud stock.\nWhen it happens, we'll decide which of both we'll hold onto, but we're quite confident that the two pieces will be worth than the sum of the part.\nAnd while you wait for this, you still get paid 4.5% by a super safe Blue Chip stock, which has the pricing power to fight inflation.\nKeyCorp (KEY)\nOne thing the last round of stress tests showed, was that US banks are resilient, and well capitalized. Yet last week they took a hit after the fed meeting. This week stress tests will be released, and most large banks are expected to do really well.\nAfter that, dividend increases will come in July as banks are eager to start returning wealth to shareholders.\nKeycorp is no exception. For an analysis of KEY's earnings development you can read Sheen Bay Research'sarticleon the stock.\nWhere I differ from his opinion is on the question of the dividend. While he doesn't expect a dividend hike, I expect all major banks to compete in their dividend increases.\nWhat investors must not forget is that in 2008 KEY paid a dividend of $0.38 per quarter, or double the current dividend.\nSince then, the company has been slowly redeeming itself, increasing the dividend every year.\nThe pandemic restrictions stopped KEY in their tracks.\nA look at our MAD Chart shows how eager the bank was at returning capital to shareholders in the past 10 years. Each time the dividend increases, the inferred value ranges shown on the MAD chart goes up.\nIn the past 10 years the dividend grew at 20% per annum, the rate dropped to 15% in the past 5 years, hindered by 0 growth last year.\nSource: Dividend Freedom Tribe.\nI believe that a 10-15% increase is very likely this year.\nIn this event, KEY's current yield of 3.6% would effectively become a 4% yield.\nBut to get fantastic income from KEY, you don't even need that much growth.\nAt a 3.6% yield, if you can get 7.5% annual dividend growth you get a fantastic income opportunity.\nLet's look at a simulation.\nLet's suggest a $10K investment in KEY, with dividends reinvested and dividend growth of 7.5% per annum.\nIn year 10, you'd expect $1,004 of income, or 10% of your original investment, which is our threshold for a \"great\" income opportunity.\nSource: Dividend Freedom Tribe.\nIn our mind there is no way that KEY doesn't grow at this rate, which would suggest hitting its pre 2008 dividend in 10 years.\nAs such we believe KEY to be a great pick for income investors. As KEY's dividend growth is on the back of growth in earnings and tangible book value per share, there is no doubt in our mind that sooner or later, the price will catch up with the higher income. The fed stress tests might be the catalyst banks need to move higher.\nIn the meantime get paid to wait.\nChevron (CVX)\nChevron is another stock which is hovering just below our target \"Buy Below\" price.\nSource: Dividend Freedom Tribe.\nWe're surprised that the oil trade is taking so long to play out. In late 2015, early 2016, the recovery to historically normal yields was a lot faster.\nYet CVX still yields 5%, after proving its resilience, superior balance sheet and increasing the dividend by 4% this year, sustaining their history of higher dividends every year for the past three decades.\nConsider the following slide from their latestearnings call:\nSource: Earnings Call.\nAt $40 brent, the dividend is covered with a little extra debt. As the energy major with the best balance sheet, it can afford this. At $60 brent, there would be excess cash above $25bn, or enough to fund the dividend for two and a half years.\nBrent is currently above $70. The longer it stays above that level, the higher the likelihood that CVX will actually have the excess cash suggested in the latter scenario.\nBack in August last year we suggested that you'll belaughing your wayto the bank with CVX's 6% yield.\nSince then, CVX has marginally beaten the S&P 500, but is far from over.\nIn the past 10 years CVX has yielded a median 3.86%. Its forward outlook is arguably better now than it was in much of the past decade, which had the energy market dealing with endemic oversupply. With underinvestment, the opposite is likely to be true in upcoming years.\nIf anything CVX should gravitate back towards its median yield which suggests further upside of 20%, much of which we expect will be realized in the latter half of 2021.\nIf you simulate a $10K investment in CVX assuming a 5% yield and 4% dividend growth, and reinvest dividends, then in year 10 you'd expect $1,154 in dividends of which $409 is expected to come from dividend reinvestments.\nThis equates to 11.54% of the initial investment, making CVX also an excellent income opportunity at current prices.\nSource: Dividend Freedom Tribe.\nConclusion\nAs long term dividend investors, we're always eager to get top companies at great valuations. The fed meeting changed nothing to the reopening trade. If anything it gave them a warning that even the slightest hint of a rate increase would be interpreted as hawkish, which will likely have the consequence of them acting later than they should, which exacerbates the likelihood of the value trade continuing.\nDon't confuse the market taking a breather with the end of the trade.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":90,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":373803149,"gmtCreate":1618836173781,"gmtModify":1634290527180,"author":{"id":"3572592743475560","authorId":"3572592743475560","name":"Asycroft","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3572592743475560","authorIdStr":"3572592743475560"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Please like and comment thanks","listText":"Please like and comment thanks","text":"Please like and comment thanks","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":2,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/373803149","repostId":"2128525488","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":220,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":145782027,"gmtCreate":1626246206269,"gmtModify":1633928667488,"author":{"id":"3572592743475560","authorId":"3572592743475560","name":"Asycroft","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3572592743475560","authorIdStr":"3572592743475560"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Nice","listText":"Nice","text":"Nice","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/145782027","repostId":"1148011457","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":336,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":158970198,"gmtCreate":1625126756414,"gmtModify":1633944514934,"author":{"id":"3572592743475560","authorId":"3572592743475560","name":"Asycroft","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3572592743475560","authorIdStr":"3572592743475560"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Should have got in when it was 30+","listText":"Should have got in when it was 30+","text":"Should have got in when it was 30+","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/158970198","repostId":"1114101721","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":125,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":123675034,"gmtCreate":1624423006728,"gmtModify":1634006318359,"author":{"id":"3572592743475560","authorId":"3572592743475560","name":"Asycroft","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3572592743475560","authorIdStr":"3572592743475560"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"What do you guys thing about 'The Big Short' saying it'll crash soon","listText":"What do you guys thing about 'The Big Short' saying it'll crash soon","text":"What do you guys thing about 'The Big Short' saying it'll crash soon","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/123675034","repostId":"1115637073","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":174,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"lives":[]}
