There are now more than 250,000 developers as active Twilio customers, and they're spending 31% more on the platform than they were a year ago.</p>\n<p>Red ink is a problem, and investors are concerned enough about the losses to detract from the spectacular top-line gains that Twilio is producing in a booming niche. We're only going to be spending more time on smartphone apps, and with that comes the challenge for app developers to make sure they beef up their in-app communication solutions. Twilio's future is bright, even if the stock is now 41% below the all-time high it established earlier this year.</p>\n<p><b>Roku</b></p>\n<p>We're streaming a lot of video from the biggest screen in the house -- our smart TV -- and that's not going to change anytime soon. Roku is the top solution, available freely as the default operating system in 38% of the smart TVs sold in North America. Folks can also buy Roku dongles for as little as $20 that plug into their TVs for access to Roku's free-to-use platform.</p>\n<p>Business is strong. Platform revenue soared 82% in its latest quarter. Hardware sales haven't been as kind, and supply-chain constraints and rising costs on that front will linger into the year ahead. The audience continues to grow despite the hardware hiccups, thankfully due to its market leadership in factory-installed new TVs.</p>\n<p>Roku plays nice with thousands of streaming apps. It's had a few tense negotiations with media and tech giants to keep them on its hub -- more recently with YouTube and YouTube TV -- but they have&nbsp;always been resolved&nbsp;before starting to get in the way of user growth. Advertisers and providers of streaming apps know that they have to work with Roku if they want to reach younger audiences who aren't consuming traditional marketing outposts.</p>\n<p>Roku stock has fallen 54% from this year's summertime highs. This would be an alarming sight if we hadn't seen&nbsp;similar drawdowns&nbsp;before. The stock has fallen between 43% and 61% every year since going public in 2017, only to hit a fresh all-time high the following year. But you should also understand that the riskier your holdings, the higher the extremes on that rate in both good years and bad years.</p>\n<p>The table below, compiled by Vanguard, shows average annual returns between 1926 and 2000 among index funds using the asset allocation listed. It also shows the best one-year return rate for that model and the worst one-year return rate for the various asset allocation models. And a model with a slightly lower average rate of return but lower potential losses will probably make you more comfortable.</p>\n<h2>2. Rebalance your portfolio</h2>\n<p>As the stock market does well or badly, your asset allocation model could shift over time. This could result in you being either too aggressive or conservative compared to the model you chose. As an example, let's say we have $100,000 invested with 70% stocks and 30% bonds at the start of 2008. That year was not a good one for stocks (darn you, Great Recession!), and the $70,000 wound up as $44,100 by the end of the year. Bonds did better, gaining a little over 5% and turning $30,000 into $31,572. So at the start of 2009, an unchanged portfolio would be 58% stocks and 42% bonds.</p>\n<p>In 2009, stocks began their recovery from the Great Recession and did well. If you left your 2008 asset allocations alone (58% stocks/42% bonds), you would have seen a 17.87% return in 2009. That's a decent return. But if you adjusted your portfolio allocation back to 70% stocks/30% bonds, your return in 2009 would have been more like 20.35%. Using our hypothetical numbers, not rebalancing costs the hypothetical investor $1,877 in potential returns just in 2009.</p>\n<p>Because the stock market has done so well over the last 13 years, your portfolio may have experienced the opposite situation from our scenario above. Now instead of your allocations becoming less risky, they could've become riskier (i.e. more invested in stocks). A rebalancing may be overdue.</p>\n<p>Rebalancing basically means selling a portion of your stocks and buying bonds when the stock market does well. And you will sell bonds and buy stocks when stocks have had an off-year. Most investment advisors suggest doing this once a year, but if there is a year with a lot of volatility, you could end up doing it more often. ValuAnalysis uses price as a multiple of normalized net free cash flow as its benchmark, and identifies the imaginary dividing line between value and growth stocks at 35x, which is the market median.</p>\n<p>The value vs. growth divide would suggest that a company trading at a 17x earnings multiple is undervalued. In reality, ValuAnalysis says it is likely a company that won't grow.</p>\n<p>In reality, a stock's value is based on the company's ability to grow free cash flow in an environment where the cost of capital is 5% to 6%. So if a company isn't outpacing that by improving revenue and margins, the multiple won't increase and the stock price is unlikely to rise.</p>\n<p>Stocks that are actually undervalued will trade between 25x and 35x free cash flow, Costantini says, outpacing the cost of capital but not breaking past the market median.</p>\n<p>To have potential, a company's accumulation of assets or revenue growth must outpace increases in global gross domestic product, and ideally show signs of accelerating. There must also be an increase in operational leverage through revenue or margins.
