It is not a stretch to see Apple stock rising 40% in 12 months if the rest of the market begins to see these growth opportunities the same way.</p>\n<p><b>This ship is going down!</b></p>\n<p>Despite plenty of Wall Street love, Apple stock also has its bears. None is more pessimistic about investing in the Cupertino company’s shares than Goldman Sachs’ Rod Hall, whobelieves that the stock has over 30% downside risk.</p>\n<p>At the core of the analyst’s bearish thesis is the services segment. Rod argues that a post-pandemic world could be highly disruptive to service revenues, as consumers choose offscreen entertainment after nearly 18 months of being confined at home.</p>\n<p>Still within services, Goldman believes that Apple TV+ could see users flock as the one-year free trial period ends, in July 2021. This would be a blow to a company that is still trying to become a more relevant player in the ultra-competitive streaming video space.</p>\n<p>Lastly, the analyst believes that the iPhone 12 resembles a “redesign cycle” rather than a more meaningful “5G super cycle”. At those intraday levels, the stock had corrected 18% from the all-time peak, reached early on January 25 of this year.</p>\n<p>For the first time since September 2020, Apple could enter bear territory again, which is defined as a 20% correction for the peak.</p>\n<p>The question: is this the right time to buy Apple on weakness, or should investors wait for a steeper decline before committing to the stock?</p>\n<p><b>No sign of deteriorating fundamentals</b></p>\n<p>It helps to understand that, to the best of my knowledge, the pressure on Apple stock seems to be unrelated to the company’s fundamentals.</p>\n<p>I made this argument recently, when I pointed out that the iPhone (half of Apple’s revenues in calendar 2020) had performed superbly in the most recent year. But the 5G super cycle in the smartphone segment only begins to tell the story.</p>\n<p>The new year is also shaping up to be a good one for the Mac (nearly 10% of calendar 2020 revenues), now that the M1 chip&nbsp;seems to be helping to drive demand higher&nbsp;for Apple’s personal computers.</p>\n<p>Lastly, I believe that services could double again, as it did between 2016 and 2020, within the next five years. This should be possible for two reasons:</p>\n<ul>\n <li>The introduction of new offerings, as Apple has done with Fitness+. Each new service, even if nowhere near as successful as iCloud or Apple Music, will be accretive to revenues and boost sales growth.</li>\n <li>A more attractive pricing arrangement should increase the demand. Here, I am specifically&nbsp;thinking of the Apple One bundle, which could serve as a nudge for new subscribers.</li>\n</ul>\n<p><b>A look at history</b></p>\n<p>With fundamentals looking solid, and absent some sort of surprise, it is reasonable to assume that Apple shares will eventually find their way north once again.</p>\n<p>Of course, it is much harder to tell when this will happen, and how far lower the stock needs to go before it rebounds. Still, it helps to look at history.</p>\n<p>Many investors may not know that Apple is not at all a stranger to bear-like corrections. Since the company went public, in 1980, Apple’s share price remained 20% below previous peaks 61% of the time – i.e. 6 out of every 10 trading days, on average.</p>\n<p>Worth noting, the frequency decreased sharply in the past decade, as Apple matured.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/04a679a703e78a8e0194aeef132bedd2\" tg-width=\"1240\" tg-height=\"635\"><span>Apple's drawdowns from a previous peak.</span></p>\n<p>Because the stock has invariably rebounded off its lows, investors who bet on Apple’s weakness eventually reaped the benefits. While it is hard to tell how much lower shares might go, investors who bought Apple on the dip have historically done well.\nAt the start of Tuesday’s trading session, on February 23, Apple traded below $120 per share for the first time since November 2020 – i.e. a three-month low. At those intraday levels, the stock had corrected 18% from the all-time peak, reached early on January 25 of this year.\nFor the first time since September 2020, Apple could enter bear territory again, which is defined as a 20% correction for the peak.\nThe question: is this the right time to buy Apple on weakness, or should investors wait for a steeper decline before committing to the stock?\nNo sign of deteriorating fundamentals\nIt helps to understand that, to the best of my knowledge, the pressure on Apple stock seems to be unrelated to the company’s fundamentals.\nI made this argument recently, when I pointed out that the iPhone (half of Apple’s revenues in calendar 2020) had performed superbly in the most recent year. But the 5G super cycle in the smartphone segment only begins to tell the story.\nThe new year is also shaping up to be a good one for the Mac (nearly 10% of calendar 2020 revenues), now that the M1 chip seems to be helping to drive demand higher for Apple’s personal computers.\nLastly, I believe that services could double again, as it did between 2016 and 2020, within the next five years. This should be possible for two reasons:\n\nThe introduction of new offerings, as Apple has done with Fitness+. Each new service, even if nowhere near as successful as iCloud or Apple Music, will be accretive to revenues and boost sales growth.\nA more attractive pricing arrangement should increase the demand. Here, I am specifically thinking of the Apple One bundle, which could serve as a nudge for new subscribers.\n\nA look at history\nWith fundamentals looking solid, and absent some sort of surprise, it is reasonable to assume that Apple shares will eventually find their way north once again.\nOf course, it is much harder to tell when this will happen, and how far lower the stock needs to go before it rebounds. Still, it helps to look at history.\nMany investors may not know that Apple is not at all a stranger to bear-like corrections. Since the company went public, in 1980, Apple’s share price remained 20% below previous peaks 61% of the time – i.e. 6 out of every 10 trading days, on average.\nWorth noting, the frequency decreased sharply in the past decade, as Apple matured.\nApple's drawdowns from a previous peak.\nBecause the stock has invariably rebounded off its lows, investors who bet on Apple’s weakness eventually reaped the benefits. But it received a second look Wednesday, a day after the electric carmaker and its CEO Elon Musk disclosed a $1.5 billion investment in the cryptocurrency that sent bitcoin to fresh highs.</p>\n<p>Reuters could not independently verify the user’s identity or whether his initial or subsequent claims were accurate.</p>\n<p>Tesla did not respond to an email to its press office.</p>\n<p>“I am a software dev working at R&amp;D at Tesla in California, over the past 72 hours our company bought 24701 BTC at an average price of 33142$,” the user with the handle TSLAinsider posted on Reddit last month.</p>\n<p>“I have no idea what will happen once this reaches the newspapers but I think the price will explode even more,” the user wrote.</p>\n<p>“I told you so,” TSLAinsider wrote on Monday after the Tesla news on bitcoin. “I got laughed at and downvoted.”</p>\n<p>The user told the New York Post late on Tuesday that he is in fact a prankster from Germany.</p>\n<p>“If you want to know the truth: I am a young German guy and I was on Acid while I did this post in the last month,” the Post quoted him as saying. “I had this afflatus that Elon is going to buy Bitcoin, so I created this trollpost.”</p>\n<p>The user, who told the Post his name was Hendrik, told Reuters that the information in the New York Post article was correct.</p>\n<p>Tesla said it started purchasing bitcoin in January. Tesla getting involved -- the fourth biggest company in the S&amp;P 500 and helmed by the world’s&nbsp;richest&nbsp;man -- brings the discussion to the big leagues.</p><p>“We see fundamental reasons for corporate crypto treasury exposure and expect others to follow suit,” wrote strategists at Fundstrat GlobalAdvisorsincluding David Grider on Monday, citing increased payment acceptance and the threat of disruption from blockchain. “We don’t think this happens overnight, but we do think there’s much more room for corporate treasury penetration and expect the trend to continue.”</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/711d0b6d8a3fa75eb5a76824ac3d17e7\" tg-width=\"1200\" tg-height=\"675\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p><p>Bitcoin hit a fresh record above $47,000 on Tuesday after Tesla signaled its intent to begin accepting the cryptocurrency as a form of payment. It quadrupled last year and is up another 60% so far this year amid endorsements from high-profile investors like Paul Tudor Jones and companies like&nbsp;PayPal Holdings Inc.</p><p>Still, though Tesla’s investment of $1.5 billion makes up about 8% of its most recent cash reserves, it’s a drop in the ocean compared to the holdings of America’s blue-chip corporates. The purchase is worth just 0.05% of the $2.79 trillion of cash and cash-equivalents held on the balance sheets of S&amp;P 500 members, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.</p><p><b>Too Risky</b></p><p>For the likes of treasurers, the asset class is just too risky, according to James Angel, an associate professor at Georgetown University. There is no compelling business case for Tesla, or any other corporation, to speculate in Bitcoin, he said in e-mailed comments.</p><p>“Corporate cash managers are generally quite conservative and invest corporate cash balances in safe liquid assets,” Angel said. “Bitcoin is highly volatile and can easily go up or down 10% in a day or 50% in a year -- certainly not a good short-term store of value.”</p><p>And while Tesla announced plans to accept Bitcoin for purchases, hardly anyone uses the cryptocurrency for anything beyond speculation. Data from New York-based blockchain researcher Chainalysis Inc. showed that only 1.3% of economic transactions came from merchants in the first four months of 2019.</p><p><b>Corporate Interest</b></p><p>Others disagree and insist there is growing interest from the corporate world. Referred to as the “news media bargaining code,” it would require digital platforms to pay local media outlets and publishers to link their content in news feeds or search results. If both sides are unable to reach a commercial deal, government-appointed arbitrators can decide on the price.\nBoth Google and Facebook have threatened to limit their services in Australia if the law is passed.\nGoogle said it could pull its search engine from the country, where it holds a staggering 94.5% market share. For its part, Facebook has threatened to stop allowing Australians to share local and international news on the social network and on Instagram if the law is passed.\nAustralia doesn’t want to see Google leave\nFletcher was part of an Australian delegation that held a conversation with Google CEO Sundar Pichaito discuss the contentious bill and its implications. But the 5G super cycle in the smartphone segment only begins to tell the story.</p>\n<p>The new year is also shaping up to be a good one for the Mac (nearly 10% of calendar 2020 revenues), now that the M1 chip&nbsp;seems to be helping to drive demand higher&nbsp;for Apple’s personal computers.</p>\n<p>Lastly, I believe that services could double again, as it did between 2016 and 2020, within the next five years. This should be possible for two reasons:</p>\n<ul>\n <li>The introduction of new offerings, as Apple has done with Fitness+. Each new service, even if nowhere near as successful as iCloud or Apple Music, will be accretive to revenues and boost sales growth.</li>\n <li>A more attractive pricing arrangement should increase the demand. Here, I am specifically&nbsp;thinking of the Apple One bundle, which could serve as a nudge for new subscribers.</li>\n</ul>\n<p><b>A look at history</b></p>\n<p>With fundamentals looking solid, and absent some sort of surprise, it is reasonable to assume that Apple shares will eventually find their way north once again.</p>\n<p>Of course, it is much harder to tell when this will happen, and how far lower the stock needs to go before it rebounds. Still, it helps to look at history.</p>\n<p>Many investors may not know that Apple is not at all a stranger to bear-like corrections. The banks are expected to outline business prospects for this year along with their fourth-quarter earnings.\nThe city-state’s largest lender,DBS Group Holdings, will be the first to report earnings on Wednesday. Smaller peersOversea-Chinese Banking CorpandUnited Overseas Bankwill release earnings on Feb. 24 and Feb. 25, respectively.\nSingapore-listed banks are typically favored by investors for their steady dividends. But like many bank stocks around the world, they fell out of favor early last year as many countries went into lockdown to contain the spread of Covid-19.\n\n“We moved from being very negative Singapore banks about same time last year and then shifting to a reasonably positive view,” Harsh Modi, JPMorgan’s co-head for financials research in Asia excluding Japan, told CNBC’s“Street Signs Asia”in late-January.\nModi explained that the banks’ asset quality — which refers to risks associated with repayments of loans — has held up “much better” than expected.\nThat’s in part due toan uptick in economic activity in Singapore, where “everybody’s up and about,” he added.\nEstimates for fourth quarter 2020\nSingapore posted its worst ever economic recession in 2020,when its economy contracted by 5.8% from a year ago, according to the government’s advance estimates. Retail investors bid for 1,204 times the amount of Kuaishou shares on offer for them in the IPO, mostly backed by borrowed money.\nThe Friday spike in Kuaishou shares was mainly driven by demand from customers in mainland China, who cannot invest in IPOs but can buy in the secondary market, and retail investors in Hong Kong who failed to get shares in Kuaishou’s IPO, said Louis Tse, managing director of brokerage Wealthy Securities.\nIt was also driven by pent-up retail demand following the last-minute suspension of Ant Group’s blockbuster $37 billion dual-listing in November, Tse added.\n“This bodes well for other Hong Kong IPOs, if the companies are well known on the mainland,” he said.\nTikTok-owner Bytedance has been considering listing its onshore Chinese short video app Douyin in Hong Kong, Reuters reported last year.\nDouyin and Kuaishou are rivals.\nKuaishou was the world’s No.2 short video platform in the first nine months last year, its IPO prospectus said.\nIt had an average of 275.9 million daily active users over the period, the prospectus adds, citing iResearch, as the pandemic forced people to spend more time online.\nWhile access to Kuaishou is free, the company makes money through selling virtual items which users gift to the creators of the videos, online marketing and commissions from e-commerce sales on the platform.\nThe company plans to use the proceeds of the IPO to grow its ecosystem, strengthen research and for selective acquisitions, it said in an exchange filing.\nBUBBLE WORRIES\nKuaishou’s sharp spike on debut, however, comes against the backdrop of growing fears about an asset bubble, with amateur investors boosting the price of assets ranging from cryptocurrencies to new market listings.\nShares in Smoore International gained 150% in July last year after it raised $1.1 billion at its IPO.\nJD Health International Inc gained 56% when it debuted in December after raising about $3.48 billion, and toy maker Pop Mart International Group closed nearly 80% higher on its first day.\nThe recent sharp rise and fall in U.S. videogame retailer GameStop and some other stocks have put investors on edge and prompted some brokerages to raise margin requirements or stop offering leverage for buying securities.\n($1 = 7.7523 Hong Kong dollars)","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":91,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"lives":[]}
