After the benchmarkS&P 500(SNPINDEX:^GSPC)lost a third of its value in mere weeks due to unprecedented uncertainties surrounding the coronavirus pandemic, it bounced back to gain in the neighborhood of 75% off its lows. You could rightly say that patience has paid off.
\n
But there's another reality that investors -- especially long-term investors -- are keenly aware of: the propensity of the stock market to crash or correct. Things might look great now, but the next big nosedive is always waiting in the wings.
\n
It begs the question: How likely is astock market crash? Let's take a closer look.
\n
Double-digit declines occur every 1.87 years, on average
\n
To begin with the basics, stock market corrections (i.e., declines of at least 10%) are quite common in the S&P 500. According to data from market analytics firm Yardeni Research, there have been 38 corrections in the S&P 500 since the beginning of 1950. This works out to an average double-digit decline in the benchmark indexevery 1.87 years. Since it's now been more than a year since the market hit its bear-market bottom, the averages are certainly not in investors' favor.
\n
However, averages are nothing more than that... averages. The market doesn't adhere to averages, even if some folks base their investments off of what's happened historically.
\n
We could enter a period similar to 1991 through 1996 where there were zero corrections. Or we could continue the theme since the beginning of 2010, where corrections occur, on average, every 19 months.
\n
Corrections have been an historical given within three years of a bear market bottom
\n
Another interesting piece of evidence to examine is the frequency by which the S&P 500 corrects after hitting a bear-market bottom.
\n
Since the beginning of 1960 (an arbitrary year I chose for the sake of simplicity), the widely followed index has navigated its way through nine bear markets, including the coronavirus crash. In rebounding from each of the previous eight bear market lows, there was at least one double-digit percentage decline within three years100% of the time. In aggregate, 13 corrections have occurred within three years following the last eight bear market bottoms (i.e., either one or two following each bottom).
\n
Put another way, rebounding from a bear-market bottom is rarely a straight-line move higher. Yet up, up, and away has pretty much been the theme for investors since March 23, 2020. History would suggest that there's a very good chance of a move lower in equities within the next two years.
\n
Crashes frequently occur when this valuation metric is hit
\n
But the most damning bit of evidence might just be the S&P 500's Shiller price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio. This is a valuation metric that examines the average inflation-adjusted earnings from the previous 10 years. You might also know it as the cyclically adjusted P/E ratio, or CAPE.
\n
As of the close of business on March 30, the S&P 500's Shiller P/E ratio hit 35.61. That's well over double its 150-year average of 16.8. Using continuous bull market moves as a parameter, it's the second-highest reading in its history.
\n
To some extent, itmakes sensethat equity valuations should be higher now than they've been historically. That's because interest rates are near an all-time low and access to the internet has effectively broken down barriers between Wall Street and Main Street that may have, in the past, kept P/E multiples at bay.
\n
However, previous instances of the S&P 500's Shiller P/E ratio crossing above and sustaining the 30 levelhaven't ended well. In the prior four instances where the Shiller P/E surpassed and held above 30, the benchmark index tumbled anywhere from 20% to as much as 89%. Although an 89% plunge, which was experienced during the Great Depression, is very unlikely these days, a big drop has historically been in the cards when valuations get extended, as they are now.
\n
Keep that cash handy in the event that opportunity knocks
\n
To circle back to the original question at hand, the data is pretty clear that the likelihood of a stock market crash or correction has grown considerably. It's impossible to precisely predict when a crash might occur, how long the decline will last, or how steep the drop could be. But the data strongly suggests that downside is in the offing.
\n
While this might be a disappointing revelation to some investors, it shouldn't be. Crashes and corrections are a normal part of the investing cycle. More importantly, theyprovide an opportunityfor investors to buy into great companies at a discount. Just think about all the great companies you're probably kicking yourself over for not buying last March.
\n
The reason to be excited about crashes and corrections is also found in the data. You see, of those 38 previous corrections in the S&P 500 since the beginning of 1950, each and every one has eventually been put into the rearview mirror by a bull market rally. After the benchmarkS&P 500(SNPINDEX:^GSPC)lost a third of its value in mere weeks due to unprecedented uncertainties surrounding the coronavirus pandemic, it bounced back to gain in the neighborhood of 75% off its lows. You could rightly say that patience has paid off.\nBut there's another reality that investors -- especially long-term investors -- are keenly aware of: the propensity of the stock market to crash or correct. Things might look great now, but the next big nosedive is always waiting in the wings.\nIt begs the question: How likely is astock market crash? Let's take a closer look.\nDouble-digit declines occur every 1.87 years, on average\nTo begin with the basics, stock market corrections (i.e., declines of at least 10%) are quite common in the S&P 500. According to data from market analytics firm Yardeni Research, there have been 38 corrections in the S&P 500 since the beginning of 1950. This works out to an average double-digit decline in the benchmark indexevery 1.87 years. Since it's now been more than a year since the market hit its bear-market bottom, the averages are certainly not in investors' favor.\nHowever, averages are nothing more than that... averages. The market doesn't adhere to averages, even if some folks base their investments off of what's happened historically.\nWe could enter a period similar to 1991 through 1996 where there were zero corrections. Or we could continue the theme since the beginning of 2010, where corrections occur, on average, every 19 months.\nCorrections have been an historical given within three years of a bear market bottom\nAnother interesting piece of evidence to examine is the frequency by which the S&P 500 corrects after hitting a bear-market bottom.\nSince the beginning of 1960 (an arbitrary year I chose for the sake of simplicity), the widely followed index has navigated its way through nine bear markets, including the coronavirus crash. In rebounding from each of the previous eight bear market lows, there was at least one double-digit percentage decline within three years100% of the time. In aggregate, 13 corrections have occurred within three years following the last eight bear market bottoms (i.e., either one or two following each bottom).\nPut another way, rebounding from a bear-market bottom is rarely a straight-line move higher. Yet up, up, and away has pretty much been the theme for investors since March 23, 2020. History would suggest that there's a very good chance of a move lower in equities within the next two years.\nCrashes frequently occur when this valuation metric is hit\nBut the most damning bit of evidence might just be the S&P 500's Shiller price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio. This is a valuation metric that examines the average inflation-adjusted earnings from the previous 10 years. You might also know it as the cyclically adjusted P/E ratio, or CAPE.\nAs of the close of business on March 30, the S&P 500's Shiller P/E ratio hit 35.61. That's well over double its 150-year average of 16.8. Using continuous bull market moves as a parameter, it's the second-highest reading in its history.\nTo some extent, itmakes sensethat equity valuations should be higher now than they've been historically. That's because interest rates are near an all-time low and access to the internet has effectively broken down barriers between Wall Street and Main Street that may have, in the past, kept P/E multiples at bay.\nHowever, previous instances of the S&P 500's Shiller P/E ratio crossing above and sustaining the 30 levelhaven't ended well. In the prior four instances where the Shiller P/E surpassed and held above 30, the benchmark index tumbled anywhere from 20% to as much as 89%. Although an 89% plunge, which was experienced during the Great Depression, is very unlikely these days, a big drop has historically been in the cards when valuations get extended, as they are now.\nKeep that cash handy in the event that opportunity knocks\nTo circle back to the original question at hand, the data is pretty clear that the likelihood of a stock market crash or correction has grown considerably. It's impossible to precisely predict when a crash might occur, how long the decline will last, or how steep the drop could be. But the data strongly suggests that downside is in the offing.\nWhile this might be a disappointing revelation to some investors, it shouldn't be. Crashes and corrections are a normal part of the investing cycle. More importantly, theyprovide an opportunityfor investors to buy into great companies at a discount. Just think about all the great companies you're probably kicking yourself over for not buying last March.\nThe reason to be excited about crashes and corrections is also found in the data. You see, of those 38 previous corrections in the S&P 500 since the beginning of 1950, each and every one has eventually been put into the rearview mirror by a bull market rally. Plus,at no point over the past centuryhave rolling 20-year total returns (including dividends) for the S&P 500 been negative.\nIf you need further encouragement to buy during a correction, keep in mind that 24 of the 38 double-digit declines in the S&P 500 havefound their bottom in 104 or fewer calendar days(3.5 months or less). Crashes and corrections may be steep at times but tend to resolve quickly. That's your cue to have cash at the ready in the event that opportunity knocks.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":96,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":166721468,"gmtCreate":1624025807754,"gmtModify":1631885219079,"author":{"id":"3566813001427529","authorId":"3566813001427529","name":"Junz95","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/eb33d072934c711cfaeb9b8c6b5873b3","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3566813001427529","idStr":"3566813001427529"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Roblox Corporation(RBLX)$ will add shares if drop to $80~~","listText":"$Roblox Corporation(RBLX)$ will add shares if drop to $80~~","text":"$Roblox Corporation(RBLX)$ will add shares if drop to $80~~","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":6,"commentSize":2,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/166721468","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":107,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":344693531,"gmtCreate":1618403855623,"gmtModify":1634293200122,"author":{"id":"3566813001427529","authorId":"3566813001427529","name":"Junz95","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/eb33d072934c711cfaeb9b8c6b5873b3","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3566813001427529","idStr":"3566813001427529"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Coinbase Global, Inc.(COIN)$this is ridiculously overpriced..","listText":"$Coinbase Global, Inc.(COIN)$this is ridiculously overpriced..","text":"$Coinbase Global, Inc.(COIN)$this is ridiculously overpriced..","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":6,"commentSize":2,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/344693531","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":2017,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":386229464,"gmtCreate":1613187383658,"gmtModify":1634554209394,"author":{"id":"3566813001427529","authorId":"3566813001427529","name":"Junz95","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/eb33d072934c711cfaeb9b8c6b5873b3","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3566813001427529","idStr":"3566813001427529"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Roblox Corporation(RBLX)$ now postpone to March..","listText":"$Roblox Corporation(RBLX)$ now postpone to March..","text":"$Roblox Corporation(RBLX)$ now postpone to March..","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":6,"commentSize":2,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/386229464","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1669,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":176837531,"gmtCreate":1626875732123,"gmtModify":1631888989394,"author":{"id":"3566813001427529","authorId":"3566813001427529","name":"Junz95","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/eb33d072934c711cfaeb9b8c6b5873b3","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3566813001427529","idStr":"3566813001427529"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$AvePoint Inc.(AVPT)$limited downside. About the same thing it does to everything else. Itreduces purchasing poweras the dollar doesn’t stretch as far as it previously did. However, there are other effects to consider.

For example, investors looking for stocks that generate income through dividends are likely going to turn bearish with rising inflation. That’s due to the dividends paid out by companies not being able to keep up with inflation rates.

So what does this mean for these stocks? Typically, they see their value decline as investors deem them not worthy of buying due to inflation outpacing dividend payments. However, it is worth pointing out that those dividends can act as a partial hedge against rising inflation rates.

Of course, that doesn’t mean there aren’t investment opportunities to be found among income-generating stocks right now. Investors can keep an eye on these stocks as they decline and buy them on the dip. Then they profit as inflation tapers off and the stocks gain value again.

That last bit is worth pointing out as the sticker shock from inflation isn’t expected to last beyond 2021. The Federal Reserve is expecting inflation to rise this year before slowing down the following year. However, it is worth pointing out that those dividends can act as a partial hedge against rising inflation rates.Of course, that doesn’t mean there aren’t investment opportunities to be found among income-generating stocks right now. However, there are concerns that inflation will keep rising and policymakers will have to put a stop to it, reportsInvestor’s Business Daily.Investors that want to see what else is happening with the market today can keep on reading.InvestorPlacecovers crypto, stocks, and other hot topics every day. Momentum investing -- trying to ride the wave of other investors' sentiment -- is popular for day-traders, especially during the current meme-stock craze. But it can also work over the long term.
\n
Below is a list of momentum stocks of companies expected to show the strongest sales growth over the next two years.
\n
Momentum ETF
\n
To begin with a large group of momentum stocks, we can look at the iShares MSCI USA Momentum Factor ETF (MTUM). This is the largest U.S. ETF that follows a momentum strategy, according to Mark Hulbert performance relative to its benchmark, the S&P 500 Growth Index.
\n
For example, the largest holding of the ETF is Tesla Inc. $(TSLA)$, which \"has experienced strong risk-adjusted performance related to the market over the past 12 months,\" according to iShares (a subsidiary of BlackRock Inc. $(BLK)$). But shares of Merck & Co. Inc. $(MRK)$ are excluded from MTUM because even though iShares considered its 12-month return \"attractive,\" the stock's six-month risk-adjusted return underperformed the benchmark.
\n
So keeping in mind the weighting by price performance relative to the index, tempered by volatility (going back as much as three years), here are the top 10 holdings of the iShares MSCI USA Momentum Factor ETF:
\n
\n
\n
\n
Company
\n
Ticker
\n
Share of MTUM
\n
\n
\n
Tesla Inc.
\n
TSLA
\n
5.00%
\n
\n
\n
JPMorgan Chase & Co.
\n
JPM
\n
4.76%
\n
\n
\n
Berkshire Hathaway Inc. Banks and insurers make up half the list, which makes sense because financials have been the second-best performing sector in the S&P 500 , after the materials sector.
\n
Momentum stock screen -- expected sales growth
\n
Thinking again about financials, they have had plenty of momentum as investors have gained confidence the U.S. economy will continue roaring back from the damage caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
\n
But revenue growth can be an important driver, especially for individual stock prices over the long term. From here, the financials might not be the best place to look for rapidly rising revenue over the next two years.
\n
Starting with the 125 momentum stocks held by MTUM, here are the 15 companies expected by analysts polled by FactSet to increase revenue the most over the next two calendar years, with 2021 as the baseline. The figures are in millions of dollars:
\n
Those are stellar sales-growth numbers -- if the analysts are close to being correct. Many of the stocks are also expensive relative to the expected 2023 sales numbers. In comparison, the iShares S&P 500 Growth ETF $(IVW)$ (which tracks the entire S&P 500 Growth Index) trades for 4.2 times estimated 2023 sales.
\n
Plug Power Inc. $(PLUG)$ tops the list, with analysts expecting sales to increase to $1.1 billion in 2023. The company said on June 10 it would build a hydrogen-production plant in Camden County, Ga.
\n
Snap Inc. (SNAP) CEO Evan Spiegal said recently the company had grown to 500 million active daily users and that almost half of U.S. smartphone users were using Snapchat.
\n
Novavax Inc. $(NVAX)$ expects to apply for FDA approval of its coronavirus vaccine during the third quarter.
\n
Carvana Co. (CVNA) has been on a tear, with used-car demand spiking in the wake of component shortages for automobile production. The company's sales by units increased 76% in the first quarter from a year earlier.
\n
Uber Technologies Inc. $(UBER)$ and Lyft Inc $(LYFT)$ are also expected to ride the economic recovery wave, although analysts expect Lyft to take longer to exceed its pre-pandemic revenue level .
\n
Palantir Technologies Inc. (PLTR) rounds out the list. The developer of software used by government defense and intelligence agencies was included in this analysis of meme stocks .
\n
Earnings
\n
Some of these companies are still in relatively early growth stages, and aren't expected to achieve full-year profitability until 2023. Here are consensus earnings-per-share estimates for three years:
\n
Those are very high price-to-earnings ratios based on current stock prices and consensus estimates for 2023. But for rapidly growing companies, earnings typically aren't a priority, which explains why Amazon.com Inc. $(AMZN)$ always trades at a high P/E. In comparison, the the iShares S&P 500 Growth ETF trades for 23.3 times its weighted aggregate consensus earnings estimate for 2023.
\n
Wall Street's opinion
\n
Here's a summary of opinion about the 15 companies held by MTUM that analysts expect to grow their revenue the most over the next two years:
\n
The 12-month price targets may not be useful -- for traders, this is an eternity; it may be a short period for long-term investors looking to profit for years as sales (and hopefully earnings, eventually) compound. It is important to do your own research and form your own opinion about a company's financial health and its ability to remain competitive.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
15 momentum stocks expected to show the best sales growth over the next two years, including Carvana, Tesla and Palantir
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n15 momentum stocks expected to show the best sales growth over the next two years, including Carvana, Tesla and Palantir\n
\n\n
\n\n\n<div class=\"head\" \">\n\n\n

\n\n
\n
Dow Jones
\n
2021-06-12 12:00
\n
\n\n
\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
Several companies on a stock screen have estimated two-year revenue growth of over 100%.
\n
There are many broad approaches to the stock market for selecting individual companies or groups for investments. Momentum investing -- trying to ride the wave of other investors' sentiment -- is popular for day-traders, especially during the current meme-stock craze. But it can also work over the long term.\nBelow is a list of momentum stocks of companies expected to show the strongest sales growth over the next two years.\nMomentum ETF\nTo begin with a large group of momentum stocks, we can look at the iShares MSCI USA Momentum Factor ETF (MTUM). This is the largest U.S. ETF that follows a momentum strategy, according to Mark Hulbert performance relative to its benchmark, the S&P 500 Growth Index.\nFor example, the largest holding of the ETF is Tesla Inc. $(TSLA)$, which \"has experienced strong risk-adjusted performance related to the market over the past 12 months,\" according to iShares (a subsidiary of BlackRock Inc. $(BLK)$). But shares of Merck & Co. Inc. $(MRK)$ are excluded from MTUM because even though iShares considered its 12-month return \"attractive,\" the stock's six-month risk-adjusted return underperformed the benchmark.\nSo keeping in mind the weighting by price performance relative to the index, tempered by volatility (going back as much as three years), here are the top 10 holdings of the iShares MSCI USA Momentum Factor ETF:\n\n\n\nCompany\nTicker\nShare of MTUM\n\n\nTesla Inc.\nTSLA\n5.00%\n\n\nJPMorgan Chase & Co.\nJPM\n4.76%\n\n\nBerkshire Hathaway Inc. Class B\nBRK.B\n4.58%\n\n\nWalt Disney Co.\nDIS\n4.48%\n\n\n$Bank of America Corp(BAC-N)$.\nBAC\n4.29%\n\n\nPayPal Holdings Inc.\nPYPL\n3.66%\n\n\nWells Fargo & Co.\nWFC\n3.11%\n\n\nApplied Materials Inc.\nAMAT\n3.00%\n\n\nAlphabet Inc. Class C\nGOOG\n2.67%\n\n\nAlphabet Inc. Class A\nGOOGL\n2.45%\n\n\nGoldman Sachs Group Inc.\nGS\n2.30%\n\n\n(FactSet)\n\n\n\n\n\nActually, there are 11 stocks listed, as MTUM holds both share classes of Alphabet Inc. Banks and insurers make up half the list, which makes sense because financials have been the second-best performing sector in the S&P 500 , after the materials sector.\nMomentum stock screen -- expected sales growth\nThinking again about financials, they have had plenty of momentum as investors have gained confidence the U.S. economy will continue roaring back from the damage caused by the coronavirus pandemic.\nBut revenue growth can be an important driver, especially for individual stock prices over the long term. From here, the financials might not be the best place to look for rapidly rising revenue over the next two years.\nStarting with the 125 momentum stocks held by MTUM, here are the 15 companies expected by analysts polled by FactSet to increase revenue the most over the next two calendar years, with 2021 as the baseline. The figures are in millions of dollars:\nThose are stellar sales-growth numbers -- if the analysts are close to being correct. Many of the stocks are also expensive relative to the expected 2023 sales numbers. In comparison, the iShares S&P 500 Growth ETF $(IVW)$ (which tracks the entire S&P 500 Growth Index) trades for 4.2 times estimated 2023 sales.\nPlug Power Inc. $(PLUG)$ tops the list, with analysts expecting sales to increase to $1.1 billion in 2023. The company said on June 10 it would build a hydrogen-production plant in Camden County, Ga.\nSnap Inc. (SNAP) CEO Evan Spiegal said recently the company had grown to 500 million active daily users and that almost half of U.S. smartphone users were using Snapchat.\nNovavax Inc. $(NVAX)$ expects to apply for FDA approval of its coronavirus vaccine during the third quarter.\nCarvana Co. (CVNA) has been on a tear, with used-car demand spiking in the wake of component shortages for automobile production. The company's sales by units increased 76% in the first quarter from a year earlier.\nUber Technologies Inc. $(UBER)$ and Lyft Inc $(LYFT)$ are also expected to ride the economic recovery wave, although analysts expect Lyft to take longer to exceed its pre-pandemic revenue level .\nPalantir Technologies Inc. (PLTR) rounds out the list. The developer of software used by government defense and intelligence agencies was included in this analysis of meme stocks .\nEarnings\nSome of these companies are still in relatively early growth stages, and aren't expected to achieve full-year profitability until 2023. Here are consensus earnings-per-share estimates for three years:\nThose are very high price-to-earnings ratios based on current stock prices and consensus estimates for 2023. But for rapidly growing companies, earnings typically aren't a priority, which explains why Amazon.com Inc. $(AMZN)$ always trades at a high P/E. In comparison, the the iShares S&P 500 Growth ETF trades for 23.3 times its weighted aggregate consensus earnings estimate for 2023.\nWall Street's opinion\nHere's a summary of opinion about the 15 companies held by MTUM that analysts expect to grow their revenue the most over the next two years:\nThe 12-month price targets may not be useful -- for traders, this is an eternity; it may be a short period for long-term investors looking to profit for years as sales (and hopefully earnings, eventually) compound. It is important to do your own research and form your own opinion about a company's financial health and its ability to remain competitive.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":153,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":861324789,"gmtCreate":1632460807341,"gmtModify":1632464471133,"author":{"id":"3566813001427529","authorId":"3566813001427529","name":"Junz95","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/eb33d072934c711cfaeb9b8c6b5873b3","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3566813001427529","idStr":"3566813001427529"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Commented","listText":"Commented","text":"Commented","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/861324789","repostId":"1142735556","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1142735556","pubTimestamp":1632455568,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1142735556?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-09-24 11:52","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Why Did Norway Become The First Western Country To Raise Interest Rates Since The Pandemic Started?","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1142735556","media":"Benzinga","summary":"Norway has become the first Western country whose central bank has raised interest rates since the s","content":"
Norway has become the first Western country whose central bank has raised interest rates since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
\n
What Happened:The Monetary Policy and Financial Stability Committee of Norges Bank voted unanimously to raise the policy rate from 0% to 0.25%. Do These 4 Things Now","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2133387578","media":"Motley Fool","summary":"Stock market downturns can be daunting. Here's what you need to do to prepare.","content":"
When will the stock market crash? That's the big question on many investors' minds at a time when stocks are, across the board, pretty overvalued. In fact, if the stock market doesn't tank completely in the near term, investors should at the very least begin bracing for a correction, where stock values drop 10% or more.
\n
Of course, the idea of a stock market crash can be very scary, especially if you're a newer investor and you haven't experienced one before. But rather than allow yourself to get spooked, you're better off taking action. Here are a few crucial moves to make if you're worried that May is when the stock market will finally take a major turn for the worse.
\n
1. Pad your emergency savings
\n
What does the amount of money you have in the bank have to do with your stock portfolio? A lot, actually. If you secure your emergency fund so you have ample cash to cover unplanned expenses, you won't have to tap your investments out of desperation. That could, in turn, prevent you from needing to liquidate stocks at a time when their value has dropped substantially.
\n
2. Diversify
\n
A diverse portfolio could help you ride out a stock market crash, so if you're heavily invested in one or two market segments right now, take the opportunity to branch out -- before things take a turn for the worse. Diversifying could simply mean buying stocks in sectors you're not currently invested in. Or you could load up on some index funds or exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that give you access to the broader market. For example, if you invest in an S&P 500 index fund or ETF, you'll effectively be putting money into the 500 largest publicly traded companies on the market. It doesn't get much more diverse than that.
\n
3. Add dividend stocks to your portfolio
\n
Companies that pay dividends tend to do so even when stock values are down. And that's a good way to hedge your bets. If your portfolio takes a hit, you can offset those losses with incoming dividend payments, and that's money you'll have the option to cash out and use as needed or reinvest.
\n
4. Stockpile some cash
\n
Market crashes tend to spell opportunity, and so it's important to have cash at the ready for when stocks go on sale. While your first priority should be to shore up your emergency fund, if you're also able to divert some extra cash to your brokerage account, you'll put yourself in a great position to pounce while stocks are temporarily discounted.
\n
Even if you're a seasoned investor who follows the market closely, you probably won't be able to predict exactly when the stock market will crash next. While a May crash is certainly possible, it's also certainly not a given. But rather than spin your wheels trying to determine when that crash is coming, you should instead focus your energy on checking off the boxes above. That way, you'll really be ready for whatever is ahead.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Think Stocks Will Crash in May? If you secure your emergency fund so you have ample cash to cover unplanned expenses, you won't have to tap your investments out of desperation. That could, in turn, prevent you from needing to liquidate stocks at a time when their value has dropped substantially.\n2. Diversify\nA diverse portfolio could help you ride out a stock market crash, so if you're heavily invested in one or two market segments right now, take the opportunity to branch out -- before things take a turn for the worse. It doesn't get much more diverse than that.\n3. Add dividend stocks to your portfolio\nCompanies that pay dividends tend to do so even when stock values are down. And that's a good way to hedge your bets. If your portfolio takes a hit, you can offset those losses with incoming dividend payments, and that's money you'll have the option to cash out and use as needed or reinvest.\n4. Stockpile some cash\nMarket crashes tend to spell opportunity, and so it's important to have cash at the ready for when stocks go on sale. While your first priority should be to shore up your emergency fund, if you're also able to divert some extra cash to your brokerage account, you'll put yourself in a great position to pounce while stocks are temporarily discounted.\nEven if you're a seasoned investor who follows the market closely, you probably won't be able to predict exactly when the stock market will crash next. While a May crash is certainly possible, it's also certainly not a given. But rather than spin your wheels trying to determine when that crash is coming, you should instead focus your energy on checking off the boxes above. That way, you'll really be ready for whatever is ahead.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":258,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":821294620,"gmtCreate":1633745526377,"gmtModify":1633745797064,"author":{"id":"3566813001427529","authorId":"3566813001427529","name":"Junz95","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/eb33d072934c711cfaeb9b8c6b5873b3","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3566813001427529","idStr":"3566813001427529"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Out of all of these, I only know about GitLab ","listText":"Out of all of these, I only know about GitLab ","text":"Out of all of these, I only know about GitLab","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/821294620","repostId":"1167388174","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1167388174","pubTimestamp":1633742914,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1167388174?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-10-09 09:28","market":"us","language":"en","title":"US IPO Week Ahead: Software, payments, telecom towers, and more in an 8 IPO week","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1167388174","media":"renaissancecap...","summary":"The Fall IPO market is expected to stay busy with eight IPOs schedule to raise $1.9 billion in the w","content":"
The Fall IPO market is expected to stay busy with eight IPOs schedule to raise $1.9 billion in the week ahead.
\n
Software development platform GitLab(GTLB) plans to raise $598 million at a $9.4 billion market cap. Financials were the best-performing S&P 500 sector with a 1.3% gain. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 237.02 points, or 0.7%, to 34,433.84, sitting less than 2% from its record. The Nasdaq Composite erased earlier gains and closed 0.1% lower at 14,360.39 amid a rise in bond yields. The 10-year Treasury yield jumped 4 basis points to 1.52%.\nThe S&P 500 rallied 2.7% for the week, notching its biggest weekly gain since early February. The Dow gained 3.4% this week for its best week since mid-March, while the Nasdaq advanced 2.4%.\nFriday’s rally came after a key inflation indicator that the Federal Reserve uses to set policy rose 3.4% in May, the fastest increase since the early 1990s, the Commerce Department reported Friday. The reading matched the expectation from economists polled by Dow Jones. The core index rose 0.5% for the month, which actually was below the 0.6% estimate.\nThe core personal consumption expenditures price index increase reflects the rapid pace of economic expansion and resulting price pressures, and amplified how far the nation has come since the pandemic-induced shutdown of 2020.\n“This provided support to the Fed’s argument that inflation is transitory and will help allay fears that we are witnessing runaway inflation,” said Anu Gaggar, senior global Investment analyst at Commonwealth Financial Network. “This should continue to provide support to risk assets such as equities.”\nBank shares jumped after the Federal Reserve announced the banking industry could easily withstand a severe recession. The Fed, in releasing the results of its annual stress test, said the 23 institutions in the 2021 exam remained “well above” minimum required capital levels during a hypothetical economic downturn. The decision cleared the way for the banks to raise dividends and buy back more stock, which was suspended during the pandemic.\nWells Fargo climbed 2.6%, while Fifth Third and PNC all gained over 2%. JPMorgan and Bank of America both rose more than 1%.\nNike’s stock surged 15.5%, helping to boost sentiment for the Dow. The company reported earnings and revenue that blew past Wall Street estimates. Digital sales also jumped 41% since last year and 147% from two years ago.\nOn the flipside,FedEx dipped 3.6% despite beating on the top and bottom lines of its earnings. FedEx also gave a strong yearly outlook.\nFriday saw heightened trading volume as FTSE Russell was set to rebalance its U.S. stock indexes at the market close. Bank of America estimated that more than $170 billion worth of shares would be changed hands as a result of 625 changes in total to Russell indexes, including the Russell 1000 and Russell 2000.\nPresident Joe Biden announced Thursday that the White House struck an infrastructure deal with a bipartisan group of senators. The lawmakers have worked for weeks to craft a roughly $1 trillion package that could get through Congress with support from both parties. The framework will include $579 billion in new spending on transportation like roads, bridges and rail, electric vehicle infrastructure and electric transit, among other things.\nThe stock market came back from last week’s swoon induced by worries about a tighter Federal Reserve. That said, investors should aware that the company is under investigation by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for its share run-up, that was primarily orchestrated by the Reddit commmunity WallStreetBets (WSB).
\n
Many WSB traders publicly disclosed their identities while promoting the stock in the past six months, leading to them becoming prime targets for possible litigation or criminal investigations. Meanwhile, GameStop is taking advantage of the run-up to issue more stock at the expense of existing shareholders. Is the stock still a safe bet for potential investors?
\n
The good news
\n
GameStop had a spectacular quarter. In Q1 2021, the company closed down 12.7% of its roughly 4,000 stores in operations. Despite this, it managed to grow its sales by 25% year-over-year to $1.277 billion.
\n
At the same time, GameStop's operating loss narrowed to $21.6 million from $98.8 million a year ago. Thanks to a once-in-a-lifetime short squeeze, the company was able to offer additional equity to pay back all its debt and start afresh. It currently has more than $700 million in cash and investments on its balance sheet.
\n
The bad news
\n
After the earnings release, GameStop shares fell by as much as 27% in a single trading session. In addition, the company announced it would issue up to five million additional shares over a period of time, representing a dilution of up to 7% to its 70 million shares outstanding.
\n
That aside, there's the major risk of lawsuits against those involved in the coordinated \"pump and dump\" activities of the WSB community. Reddit user profiles of these traders are pretty much public. In fact, lawsuits have already been filed against prominent members of the community for allegedly promoting GameStop while the stock was at \"artificially high levels\".
\n
On June 9, the SEC announced it was probing GameStop concerning recent trading activities. While the investigation is still in its infancy, WSB members are growing increasingly concerned about legal and privacy issues from the fallout. The agency could potentially subpoena popular platforms like Reddit to access personal information/identities of members regarding their roles in the run-up. I believe this rapidly spreading fear, especially among those who are \"holding-on-for-dear-life\" (HODLers), is responsible for the sell-off.
\n
What's next?
\n
The same community that propped up GameStop's stock in a greed-fueled frenzy is equally capable of sending the shares crashing if fear takes center stage. While the company is generating solid growth, the company has a negative free cash flow of about $33.5 million per quarter, including a net cash outflow of nearly $19 million in operating activites. It's a noticeable improvement from $55.9 million negative FCF last year -- but still isn't good news yet. GameStop sold investors on the dream of a turnaround into an e-commerce giant and now has to live up to its reputation.
\n
There is a lot of uncertainty as to how profitable the new GameStop could be. Maybe its net margins will improve to 5% to 10%; perhaps it will hover around 0%, perhaps it will keep running at a loss for quite some time. After all, its gross margins actually fell 1.8 percentage points to 25.9% in Q1. Until the company can prove its new business model is working, it's probably better to look at retailers with both revenue growth and solid profitability instead.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Can You Still Count on GameStop Stock?
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nCan You Still Count on GameStop Stock?\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-06-23 10:50 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
GameStop (NYSE:GME) reported impressive revenue growth in Q1 2021, crushing the narrative that it's a failing brick-and-mortar video game retailer with a bleak outlook.
