receipts for the movie industry this weekend were the lowest in more than two months. It was a cruel summer, but AMC has a box of candy up its sleeve.","content":"
It was a rough weekend at the corner multiplex. Movie theaters across the country had just $61.6 million in gross ticket sales over the weekend, the weakest box office action in more than two months. Horror flick Candyman was the top draw, but in terms of audience counts, the showing proved to be more trick than treat.
\n
This is literally the worst weekend performance of the summer season, and the trend isn't kind. We've seen box office receipts post sequential declines in five of the past seven weeks since peaking with Black Widow's premiere. That particular week in early July was the only weekend that the industry broke above $100 million in ticket sales, a feat that happened every single weekend for movie studios during the 2018 and 2019 peak summer seasons.
\n
An empty theater is obviously a bad look for the industry, flying in the face of the narrative of AMC Entertainment Holdings (NYSE:AMC) as one of this year's hottest stocks. AMC is nearly a 20-bagger in 2021, but the fumbled momentum for the exhibitors this summer is defying the otherwise buoyant stock chart. Let's take a closer look at what went wrong, and why it's too soon to dismiss AMC's chances to get back on track.
\n
The \"Candyman\" can't
\n
Don't point the finger at Comcast's (NASDAQ:CMCSA) Candyman reboot as the cause for the slump. It's checking in with a solid 85% approval rating for film critics tracked by Rotten Tomatoes. You also can't blame the widespread availability of online streaming options. Candyman (as well as the weekend's second-highest grossing film, Free Guy) are exclusive theatrical releases.
\n
An easier culprit to blame right now could be the delta variant of COVID-19. The summertime surge of the deadly virus is likely keeping people away from indoor social settings, but even that's not a viable lone scapegoat. Box office receipts are 43% below the same period -- the weekend before the Labor Day holiday weekend -- in 2019. It's a safe bet that your local bars, indoor malls, and even restaurants aren't seeing a 43% plunge in sales over the past two years.
\n
This summer was supposed to be the great rebirth of going out to the movies. Studios that had to delay 2020 and even early 2021 releases are now flooding the pipeline. Comcast's Universal Studios, for example, was originally set to put out Candyman 13 months ago. Here we are, a couple of delays later, and audiences failed to materialize despite saying the film title five times in front of a mirror. Less than 1% of the country saw Candyman over the weekend, and less than 2% of the country saw any movie at the multiplex.
\n
The convenience of streaming video entertainment is something that will challenge AMC and its smaller peers. It also obviously doesn't help that folks can freely enjoy movies at home without having to mask up the way that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is suggesting for indoor gatherings at the movie house.
\n
The bullish thesis that summer audiences would build for the multiplex operators has gone the other way. This doesn't mean that the industry is doomed. It doesn't mean that folks have flocked back home after the initial retro novelty of going back to the movies.
\n
More to an AMC-specific point, it doesn't mean that the leading exhibitor took a 43% hit to its top line this weekend relative to where it was two years ago, when its stock was trading much lower. The chain has been gaining market share this year against other movie theater stocks, and it's also getting a lot better at monetizing the experience. Food and beverage purchases per customer were a whopping 42% higher at AMC in the second quarter than they were during the same financial period in 2019.
\n
We're not at the point where the concessions stand is making enough to offset the drop in attendance, but this is the high-margin part of the multiplex model. It's problematic to see the telltale summer season fizzle out this way, but there's still time to go before the end credits start to roll.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Wake Up, AMC Stock: Summer Is Ending
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nWake Up, AMC Stock: Summer Is Ending\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-08-30 22:24 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
It was a rough weekend at the corner multiplex. We've seen box office receipts post sequential declines in five of the past seven weeks since peaking with Black Widow's premiere. AMC is nearly a 20-bagger in 2021, but the fumbled momentum for the exhibitors this summer is defying the otherwise buoyant stock chart. 26","content":"
AMC Networks Inc.Chief Executive Josh Sapan is stepping down, the company said Tuesday, capping a 26-year run during which he shepherded hits including “Mad Men” and “The Walking Dead” and masterminded the company’s foray into video streaming.
\n
Mr. Sapan, 70, will be replaced in the interim by Matthew Blank, the former chairman of Showtime Networks and a senior adviser at the Raine Group, a merchant bank. The company said it would conduct a search for a permanent replacement for Mr. Sapan.
\n
Mr. Sapan will become executive vice chairman of AMC Networks, advising the company on its video-streaming efforts.
\n
He helped transform AMC Networks from a sleepy network known for airing classic movies into a TV tastemaker that took risks on critically acclaimed shows. On his watch, the company greenlighted “Mad Men,” “Breaking Bad” and “The Walking Dead,” which helped define the rise of prestige television.
\n
Mr. Sapan is stepping aside from AMC during a period of upheaval for the media industry. The rise of video-streaming services such asNetflixInc.and Amazon.comInc.’s Prime Video has pressured the traditional TV business, which for decades relied on ever-increasing growth in advertising and subscription revenue.
\n
He has launched niche streaming services to feature AMC’s programming. Rather than offering a broad array of TV shows and movies, AMC is focusing on narrower audiences with targeted services such as Shudder for horror movie fans and Acorn TV for programming from the U.K.
\n
AMC Networks shares fell slightly Tuesday morning. The stock has risen by more than one-third for the year. The company said it would conduct a search for a permanent replacement for Mr. Sapan.\nMr. Sapan will become executive vice chairman of AMC Networks, advising the company on its video-streaming efforts.\nHe helped transform AMC Networks from a sleepy network known for airing classic movies into a TV tastemaker that took risks on critically acclaimed shows. The hedge fund now owns more than 1.8 million shares of AMC stock.
\n
Jim Simons, the billionaire who runs the hedge fund, seems to be saying yes to moviegoers returning to the cinemas. I don’t think there’s any doubt that this will happen.
\n
After all, a day without the cinema is like a day without sunshine. But that’s not the same thing as AMC stock being an outright buy at $37.
\n
Here’s why.
\n
AMC Stock Weighting
\n
While my colleague brought to my attention Renaissance’s near tripling of its AMC holdings in the second quarter, for which I’m grateful, he didn’t mention what that change meant to the hedge fund’s overall portfolio.
\n
I’ll tell you.
\n
Based on the hedge fund’s 13F, it represents 0.13% of its $80.1 billion in net assets at the end of June. Furthermore, the value of its AMC stock at the end of June was $102.7 million. Today, those same 1.81 million shares are worth $67.9 million, or 34% less.
\n
So, what’s more important if you’re Simons is the price you paid for your additional shares. As my colleague stated, it had 516,333 shares at the end of March, according to its 13F. Therefore, through April, May, and June, it added 1,296,012 shares.
\n
During those three months, AMC stock had a high and low share price of $61.34 (June) and $8.31 (April). Given Renaissance is in business to make money for its clients, I would suggest that it picked up most of the 1.2 million shares between $8 and $15.
\n
Based on a midpoint average price paid of $11.50, it’s sitting on a $47 million profit for the 1.2 million shares it picked up in the second quarter.
\n
However, as I said, AMC shares have lost 34% of their value in the seven weeks since the end of the second quarter. Further, the 516,333 shares it held in AMC at the end of March were acquired in the first three months of 2021.It held none at the end of December.
\n
AMC stock had a high and low of $20.36 and $1.91, respectively, in January, February and March. But, again, based on the fact it’s in business to make money for its clients, I would argue that it bought most of the 516,333 in January when the shares traded between $1.91 and $6. At the midpoint, let’s say it paid $3.96 a share.
\n
So, my estimate suggests Renaissance paid $2.04 million for its AMC shares in the first quarter and $14.9 million for those in the second quarter. That means it was sitting on an overall return of 506% at the end of June. Today, that’s down to 301%.
\n
The Odds Are Good That Simons Moved On
\n
As I said, AMC stock only accounted for 0.13% of Renaissance’s total assets at the end of June. The hedge fund had 15 investments in the “A” section alone with a higher dollar amount than AMC. I won’t bother telling you about the “Bs” or further into the alphabet.
\n
So, to characterize its top-up as a sign Renaissance is in some way super-stoked about AMC’s future potential isn’t accurate. It’s merely another opportunity by the hedge fund to use artificial intelligence to seek out quick profits. Nothing more.
\n
With that in mind, I find it hard to believe that the hedge fund hasn’t sold at least a portion of its AMC shares this quarter. We’ll know for sure when it reports its Q3 13F in mid-November.
\n
Now, if Renaissance releases its 13F in mid-November and the holdings have doubled or tripled from 1.8 million, then I’d be super-stoked about the company’s future.
\n
If you want to rely on Simons’ take on the markets, Renaissance’s largest holding at the end of Q2 was Novo Nordisk(NYSE:NVO) at $2.03 billion, or 2.53% of its portfolio.
\n
If you want to buy based on the hedge fund’s largest increase during the second quarter – only including billion-dollar market caps – you should consider CSX(NASDAQ:CSX) or Nio(NYSE:NIO). It added 7.5 million and 5.3 million shares, respectively, during the second quarter.
\n
As for AMC itself, I would hesitate to own its stock given its debt and the fact it’s done nothing to diversify its revenue stream beyond moviegoing.
","source":"lsy1606302653667","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Should You Follow Jim Simons’ Lead and Jump on AMC Stock?
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nShould You Follow Jim Simons’ Lead and Jump on AMC Stock?\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-08-24 22:47 GMT+8 InvestorPlace\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
InvestorPlace’s Brenden Rearick reported on Aug. 17 that Renaissance Technologies upped its stake in AMC Entertainment(NYSE:AMC) in the second quarter by 260%. It added 7.5 million and 5.3 million shares, respectively, during the second quarter.\nAs for AMC itself, I would hesitate to own its stock given its debt and the fact it’s done nothing to diversify its revenue stream beyond moviegoing.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":24,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":834287748,"gmtCreate":1629807242884,"gmtModify":1631888499311,"author":{"id":"3566422009404750","authorId":"3566422009404750","name":"RyantKing","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/21cb807f554e780c7da77b8008cbe145","crmLevel":3,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3566422009404750","authorIdStr":"3566422009404750"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Vivos Therapeutics(VVOS)$Pump n dump lor","listText":"$Vivos Therapeutics(VVOS)$Pump n dump lor","text":"$Vivos Therapeutics(VVOS)$Pump n dump lor","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/834287748","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":73,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":838880588,"gmtCreate":1629385049044,"gmtModify":1631888295853,"author":{"id":"3566422009404750","authorId":"3566422009404750","name":"RyantKing","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/21cb807f554e780c7da77b8008cbe145","crmLevel":3,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3566422009404750","authorIdStr":"3566422009404750"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$SGOCO Group Ltd(SGOC)$Pump and dump. On last Wednesday, its shares skyrocketed another 95.6% after the company announced it would launch an exclusive web platform for retail investors. Shareholders would receive many perks, including free popcorn, exclusive new screenings, and the chance to speak with CEO Adam Aron.

Enthusiasm about AMC's turnaround prospects have sent its shares soaring more than 400% in the past month and 2,100% year to date. Is the stock a safe investment right now?

What's behind the hype?

During the first quarter of 2021, AMC operated 585 of its domestic theaters at just 15% to 60% capacity, while only 27% of its 133 international ones stayed partly open. People steered clear of packed indoor movie screenings with the coronavirus pandemic still going strong, but that's less of a risk as more of the U.S. population has been vaccinated.

Hence, investors are betting that AMC's revenue and earnings will experience a massive rebound starting in the second quarter. In 2019, the company generated $5.42 billion from ticket, concessions (food and beverage), and entertainment sales and posted a free cash flow of $84 million.

But there's more. The pandemic also led to extended production delays, as social distancing can be difficult on a movie set. Many producers also did not want to release completed films in a purely digital format and miss out on lucrative box office revenue.

There is now a massive backlog of new films from blockbuster franchise properties such as Avatar, Dungeons & Dragons, Ghostbusters, Halloween, Kingsman, The Matrix, Minecraft, Mission: Impossible, and Tomb Raider, as well as several new offerings from the comic book universes of DC and Marvel. They are all scheduled to be released by the end of 2022.

The schedule is so packed that prominent films like Black Widow and Cinderella are set to hit theaters within two weeks of one another in July. Given its sheer size, AMC might even see its box office revenue hit record highs in 2022.

Can you count on AMC?

Generally speaking, most investors tend to buy on emotion and justify with reason. Now is probably time to look at the latter. When the stock was trading for just $12 last month, it looked pretty undervalued.

However, things have changed as AMC's market cap has surged to nearly $25 billion. To put things into perspective, the company's market cap was less than one-fifth of that amount in 2016, before streaming services like Netflix gained momentum and took away some of its market share.

What's more, AMC has $5.4 billion in long-term debt and owes $4.9 billion per year in theater rent. Even in its heyday, the company operated at razor-thin margins. Now its balance sheet looks even worse as liabilities outpace its assets by over $2 billion. For these reasons, it's probably a good time to take profits on the stock and consolidate gains.

But watch for its next move

Based on the poor fundamentals (and experience with market bubbles), it can be very tempting to see the recent rally as nothing more than a pump-and-dump scheme or a total scam. But there is something that even prudent investors are missing.

With a $25 billion market cap, AMC only has to issue 22% more shares to raise cash to pay off its entire debt balance. That's right: The company has the potential to do a \"soft reset\" and start afresh. The returns would be immediate, as after closing, it would no longer have to pay $151.5 million per quarter in interest. In the first quarter of 2021, the company's interest expense outweighed its total revenue.

Not only would its profit margins increase, but it could also use new cash to increase its theater count, upgrade its recliner seats and big screens, introduce dine-in restaurants at its locations, and more. Since there is still a lot of demand from retail investors at these levels, I don't think it would have trouble finding buyers for the offering, either.

In fact, the company did just that on June 3. AMC sold 11.5 million shares of stock hours after announcing the offering, raising $587.4 million in much-needed cash. The stock fell by more than 30% from the previous day's close before recovering. Investors should continue to expect further dilutions ahead, as the new capital is still not enough for a soft reset of its liabilities.

Overall, AMC stock is very overvalued at these levels. But thanks to the help of 10.3 million traders/followers/influencers of WallStreetBets, the company now has the option to refinance or eliminate its crippling liabilities. If the share price comes down to something more reasonable (say, $20), I'd definitely give the new AMC a chance.
