quarterly reports even as some worried that it was too early to celebrate.
\n
In its fifth straight session of gains, the benchmark S&P 500 index finished just 0.4% below its early September record close while the Dow Jones Industrials average ended the day about 0.5% below its record reached in mid-August.
\n
Johnson & Johnson's shares added 2.3% providing a big boost to the S&P 500 after it raised its 2021 adjusted profit forecast. Insurer Travelers Cos Inc climbed 1.6% after beating its profit estimates.
\n
High-profile technology and communications companies were also big S&P boosts with Apple Inc, Facebook and Microsoft all rising.
\n
But in the second week of earnings with a \"very small sample\" of releases, Steve Sosnick, chief strategist at Interactive Brokers, worried about a possible pullback.
\n
\"We're seeing volatility measures like the VIX flipping from nervous to complacent in a really short period of time,\" said Sosnick. \"We may be a bit ahead of ourselves. The market was expecting an increase. In its fiscal second quarter ended June 30, Pinterest reported a drop of 24 million users from the previous quarter -- down to a total of 454 million monthly active users. These are folks around the world who spend time browsing the app. Advertisers are interested in gaining their attention and are willing to pay Pinterest for the privilege to do so. Fewer users mean advertisers pay less to Pinterest.
\n
The surprising turnaround in the trend makes investors unsure if the loss in Pinterest users was a one-quarter event or if it will continue downward. After spending so much time cooped up at home, it's understandable that folks are going out more often as economies reopen. That boost in ad sales increased Pinterest's revenue by 125% in the second quarter vs. the same time last year.
\n
Moreover, even though the numbers show a decline in monthly active users, it doesn't necessarily mean Pinterest has lost those consumers permanently; it just means they haven't opened their app or logged in from a computer browser in the past month. Using that metric, the stock is still not cheap, trading right around its historical average.
\n
That could be why intelligent investors are not buying the stock in large quantities just yet. Pinterest is likely on their watch lists, and they are waiting for the stock to either fall further or for better news regarding monthly active users. Cryptocurrencies are decentralized digital money based on blockchain technology. They are not issued by the authority and therefore do not enjoy the legal recognition that fiat money has. Cryptocurrencies should not be used as money in the market and enter circulation. Financial activities that involve cryptocurrencies are all illegal activities, the central bank stated in the notice. Financial services that facilitate the exchange between cryptocurrency and fiat money, exchange of information on cryptocurrency trading, pricing of cryptocurrency, trading of cryptocurrency derivatives, and financing through cryptocurrency are forbidden and considered illegal. Criminal liabilities can be imposed if relevant violations constitute a criminal offense.
\n
The notice also states that it is also considered an illegal financial activity for overseas cryptocurrency exchange organizations to provide exchange services through the Internet for residents within China. Employees of such overseas exchange organizations who knowingly engage in cryptocurrency services and provide services on the marketing of cryptocurrency, payment, and technical support are punishable by law.
\n
The notice calls for more efforts in establishing a working mechanism in response to cryptocurrency trading as well. The notice states that it is important to establish coordination between government departments, and between the central government and local governments to monitor cryptocurrency activities.
\n
In addition, a risk forecast on cryptocurrency trading should be built, according to the notice. The central bank and the Cyberspace Administration of China should optimize their monitoring technology that targets cryptocurrency activities. Financial institutions and non-bank payment organizations should also enhance their efforts in monitoring cryptocurrency activities.
\n
Lastly, the notice calls for the development of a multi-level mechanism to prevent cryptocurrency trading and enforce relevant laws and regulations.
