Economists surveyed by Dow Jones had been expecting a gain of 4.7%.\n\"I think there were a lot of people who held back, who wanted to see the hotter inflation number,\" CNBC's Jim Cramer said on \"Squawk on the Street.\" \"Now they've said, 'OK, now that's over with. Tricks like that. Luckily for investors, the EV market is far from a zero-sum game and newcomers continue to enter the space. Chinese EV maker NIO is a rising star in the booming market, as its sales continue to grow. The company is also focused on autonomous driving tech, as well as batteries, which are the lifeblood of the industry.</p><p>NIO sells multiple models that are somewhat in-line with Tesla, from smaller SUVs to sedans. The company said in early January that it delivered 17,353 vehicles in the fourth quarter, which marked a 110% jump.</p><p>Overall, NIO’s full-year deliveries surged 113% to nearly 44,000 vehicles in 2020. And its January 2021 figures were even more impressive, with deliveries up 350% from the year-ago period to push its overall cumulative deliveries to 83K.</p><p>With this in mind, Zacks estimates call for NIO’s FY20 revenue to jump 120% to $2.49 billion, with FY21 projected to come in another 97% higher to reach $4.89 billion. The Chinese EV company is also expected to significantly shrink its adjusted losses during this stretch.</p><p>NIO has topped our EPS estimates in the trailing two periods and its positive earnings revisions help it land a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy) heading into the release of its Q4 results on March 1.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5b6233d1784a5cb7db62b437f7632a3f\" tg-width=\"620\" tg-height=\"314\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p><p>NIO, which rocks an “A” grade for Growth in our Style Scores system, has seen its stock skyrocket over 1,000% in the last year and 300% in the past six months. Luckily for investors who missed the ride, NIO has cooled down, up only 12% in the last three months.</p><p>At roughly $55 per share, it’s down about 13% from its late January records. The recent downturn has seen it fall from overbought in terms of the Relative Strength Index to around 45—an RSI above 70 is often regarded as overbought, with any number below 30 considered oversold.</p><p>NIO’s recent price performance could give it room to run if it’s able to impress Wall Street. And the stock jumped over 1% through morning trading Friday, as it bounces off its 50-day moving average. NIO shares also trade at a discount compared to other high-flyers at 12.7X forward sales, which marks a discount against Tesla’s 15.5X and comes in 25% below its own six-months highs.</p><p>Three out of the nine brokerage recommendations that Zacks has for NIO come in at a “Strong Buy,” with none below a “Hold.” NIO might be worth buying as a long-term play that’s far less expensive than Tesla ($784 a share), in a world where EVs already accounted for over 30% of Volvo’s new car sales in Europe in 2020. And let’s remember that China is one of the world’s largest EV markets.</p><p><b>CrowdStrikeCRWD</b></p><p>CrowdStrike is a cloud-focused cybersecurity firm that utilizes machine learning and AI to protect endpoints and cloud workloads. This is crucial in the cloud age that’s full of rapidly expanding endpoints, which include laptops, desktops, smartphones, IoT devices, and more.</p><p>Remote work and schooling pushed this area of the ever-growing cybersecurity space to the forefront, but it was already booming. More importantly, as devices proliferate and our digitally-connected world grows more complex, it becomes more vulnerable.</p><p>CrowdStrike on February announced plans to bolster its offerings through the acquisition of Humio for $400 million—expected to close in the first quarter. Humio provides high-performance cloud log management and observability technology. The deal is set to “further expand its eXtended Detection and Response (XDR) capabilities by ingesting and correlating data from any log, application or feed to deliver actionable insights and real-time protection.”</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9f684cfbac7ba46e2cf8ab6e063461a2\" tg-width=\"620\" tg-height=\"280\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p><p>CrowdStrike, which went public in the summer of 2019, has soared nearly 280% in the past 12 months. More recently, the stock is up 65% in the last six months, and it already bounced back to new records—which it hit earlier in the week—after it slipped in mid-January.</p><p>The stock is firmly a growth play at the moment, trading at 42.7X forward sales, which puts it right in line with e-commerce giant ShopifySHOP. Despite its run, the stock is not currently considered overbought, with an RSI of 64.</p><p>CRWD’s positive earnings revisions help it grab a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy) at the moment, with it set to release its fourth quarter fiscal 2021 results on March 16. Meanwhile, 14 of the 19 brokerage ratings Zacks has for CRWD come in at a “Strong Buy,” with none lower than a “Hold.”</p><p>Looking back, the company crushed our Q3 estimates in December, with sales up 86%. CrowdStrike also lifted its guidance at the time. Zacks estimates currently call for it to swing from an adjusted loss of -$0.02 a share in the year-ago period to +$0.09 in the fourth quarter on 65% stronger sales.</p><p>In total, the cybersecurity firm is projected to soar from a loss of -$0.42 a share to +$0.23 in fiscal 2021. Plus, CRWD’s FY22 EPS figure is projected to climb another 70% higher, all the way to $0.39 a share. Meanwhile, its revenue is projected to jump 79% to hit $861 million in FY21 and then climb another 42% to $1.22 billion in FY22.</p><p>CrowdStrike’s expected growth would come on top of FY20’s 93% sales expansion. The stock has clearly already gone on an impressive run. But it is poised to continue to grow in a world where everything is connected and data is endless. Excluding special purpose acquisition vehicles, U.S. IPOs last year raised $83 billion in gross proceeds.&nbsp; The prices of these IPOs jumped during the initial day of trading by 36% on average.</p>\n<p>Despite these high returns, index funds — including mutual funds and exchange-traded funds — almost never bought IPOs at their initial offering price.&nbsp; Instead, index funds waited to buy IPO stocks until near the date on which they were added to the relevant index — typically at the end of a quarter within six months to a year after the IPO.</p>\n<p>Yet as the index inclusion date nears for any IPO, its price typically surges in anticipation of a barrage of purchases — driving up the price that index funds must pay for that stock.&nbsp; For example, the price of Tesla&nbsp;spiked once it became likely that the company would be added to the S&amp;P500.</p>\n<p>In this article, I outline the data from 2010 to 2018 about the high initial returns for IPOs as well as the concerns holding back index funds from buying IPOs before they are included in the index.&nbsp; Then, I make a path-breaking proposal — allowing any index fund that tracks the Russell 1000 Index&nbsp;to meet these concerns by early buying of IPOs if, and only if, they are large relative to the size of the index.</p>\n<p>Like many other studies,the study that I co-authored with two experts on indexing&nbsp;found high returns in IPO stock prices during the initial day of trading. After this initial day of trading, the study evaluated IPO returns by a measure known as the index-adjusted performance (IAP) — the difference between the total return of the security and the total return of the index from the closing price on the first day of trading to the closing price of any following day.&nbsp; For example, a positive IAP would signal that an IPO has outperformed the index from the close of the first day of trading until the date the IPO is included in the relevant index.</p>\n<p>The study calculated these two metrics of returns for all 932 U.S. IPOs offered in the nine years between January 2010 and December 2018.&nbsp; Of these 932 IPOs, 115 were included in the Russell 1000 within the first six months of trading.</p>\n<p>The study used the Russell 1000 because it includes 92% of the total market capitalization of all listed stocks in the U.S. equity market.&nbsp; The Russell 1000 contains the top 1000 publicly traded U.S. companies according to market capitalization.&nbsp; IPOs are considered for inclusion at the end of each quarter, strictly based on their market capitalization.</p>\n<p>The first-day return for these 115 IPOs was highly positive — 22% on average with a median gain of 10%. &nbsp;Similarly, looking at the IAP for these 115 IPOs included in the Russell 1000, the study found a positive trend — with an average IAP of 6.89% and median of 5.24% between the IPO and the index inclusion date.</p>\n<p>Both of these trends show that index funds could generate excess return by buying IPOs before they are added to the index.&nbsp; The greatest return could be realized by buying IPOs at the initial offering price and holding them through the index inclusion date.&nbsp; Index funds could also realize significant excess returns by buying IPOs after their first day of trading and holding them through the index inclusion date.</p>\n<p><b>Risks in the returns</b></p>\n<p>Index funds would face several risks associated with such early purchases of IPOs.</p>\n<p>First, and most importantly, no one knows which IPOs will be added to the index at the time of the IPO.&nbsp; An index fund might purchase an IPO stock that doesn’t get added to the index.&nbsp; In that event, the fund would have to sell the IPO stock, potentially at a loss. The price of the IPO stock would decline because there would no longer be the expectation that other index funds would be required to buy that stock when it is added to the index.</p>\n<p>A second concern is that an index fund would not get a large enough allocation in an IPO to reflect the stock’s future position in the index — for example, when a popular tech company goes public.&nbsp;Even so, an index fund can still generate excess returns by buying more of such a stock on the day following an IPO and holding that stock until it is added to the index.</p>\n<p>Third, since the index fund would be holding stocks that are not included in the index — at least for several months — the fund would experience tracking error.&nbsp; Tracking error occurs when the returns on an index fund portfolio differ materially from those of the index it is benchmarked against.&nbsp; But investors would probably not be overly concerned if the fund beat the index it was designed to track.</p>\n<p>Of course, the prospectus of such an index fund would have to make clear that it would be buying stocks in the initial offerings of IPOs and after their first day of trading. The prospectus should also delineate the risks involved when the fund buys IPOs before they are included in the index.</p>\n<p>To mitigate the most important risk — that the IPO will not be included in the index — I recommend that index funds should purchase an IPO only if its expected weight in the Russell 1000 is relatively large. The expected weight equals the gross proceeds raised by the IPO, divided by the total freely traded float of stocks in the index. &nbsp; Since the Russell 1000 Index is composed of the top 1000 U.S. companies by market capitalization, the larger the IPO is relative to the index, the more likely that the IPO will be added to that index.</p>\n<p>This strategy could be adapted to varying risk tolerances of index funds by adjusting the size threshold for early purchases of an IPO.&nbsp; In a conservative strategy, the index fund would purchase only IPOs with the largest expected weight in the index, since they are most likely to be included in the index.&nbsp; In a more aggressive strategy, by contrast, the size threshold for buying IPOs would be lower.</p>\n<p>The study examined three thresholds for risk appetite, defined in terms of the expected weight of the IPO in the index: 1.0 basis point for conservative; 0.75 basis point for pragmatic and 0.50 basis point for aggressive. (One basis point equals 1/100 of 1%)</p>\n<p>The results, summarized in the table below, show that this strategy would have been successful at generating excess returns without significant risks during the period from 2010 through 2018.</p>\n<p>For example, 100% of the largest IPOs that would have been purchased under the conservative strategy during this period were added to the index within the first six months and generated excess returns above 15%.&nbsp; Under the aggressive strategy, 88% of the IPOs that would have been purchased during this period were included in the index within six months and generated excess returns of close to 17%.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0fc52461985f7a3ca10fac53ba2ccf05\" tg-width=\"1260\" tg-height=\"476\"></p>\n<p>My recommendation is that an index fund based on the Russell 1000 buy relatively large IPOs in their initial offerings or, if necessary, immediately after their first day of trading. The price of the IPO stock would decline because there would no longer be the expectation that other index funds would be required to buy that stock when it is added to the index.\nA second concern is that an index fund would not get a large enough allocation in an IPO to reflect the stock’s future position in the index — for example, when a popular tech company goes public. Even so, an index fund can still generate excess returns by buying more of such a stock on the day following an IPO and holding that stock until it is added to the index.\nThird, since the index fund would be holding stocks that are not included in the index — at least for several months — the fund would experience tracking error.  Tracking error occurs when the returns on an index fund portfolio differ materially from those of the index it is benchmarked against.  But investors would probably not be overly concerned if the fund beat the index it was designed to track.\nOf course, the prospectus of such an index fund would have to make clear that it would be buying stocks in the initial offerings of IPOs and after their first day of trading. The prospectus should also delineate the risks involved when the fund buys IPOs before they are included in the index.\nTo mitigate the most important risk — that the IPO will not be included in the index — I recommend that index funds should purchase an IPO only if its expected weight in the Russell 1000 is relatively large. The expected weight equals the gross proceeds raised by the IPO, divided by the total freely traded float of stocks in the index.   Since the Russell 1000 Index is composed of the top 1000 U.S. companies by market capitalization, the larger the IPO is relative to the index, the more likely that the IPO will be added to that index.\nThis strategy could be adapted to varying risk tolerances of index funds by adjusting the size threshold for early purchases of an IPO.  In a conservative strategy, the index fund would purchase only IPOs with the largest expected weight in the index, since they are most likely to be included in the index.  In a more aggressive strategy, by contrast, the size threshold for buying IPOs would be lower.\nThe study examined three thresholds for risk appetite, defined in terms of the expected weight of the IPO in the index: 1.0 basis point for conservative; 0.75 basis point for pragmatic and 0.50 basis point for aggressive. (One basis point equals 1/100 of 1%)\nThe results, summarized in the table below, show that this strategy would have been successful at generating excess returns without significant risks during the period from 2010 through 2018.\nFor example, 100% of the largest IPOs that would have been purchased under the conservative strategy during this period were added to the index within the first six months and generated excess returns above 15%.  Under the aggressive strategy, 88% of the IPOs that would have been purchased during this period were included in the index within six months and generated excess returns of close to 17%.\n\nMy recommendation is that an index fund based on the Russell 1000 buy relatively large IPOs in their initial offerings or, if necessary, immediately after their first day of trading. And when Tesla stock drops, other EV stocks follow because Wall Street often relies on Tesla’s valuation to come up with price targets.</p><p>Monday, shares of three other&nbsp;high-flying&nbsp;EV stocks with significant sales—NIO(NIO),XPeng(XPEV) andLi Auto(LI)—fell roughly 7% to 8%. And since Tesla stock hit its all-time high, NIO, XPeng and&nbsp;Li Auto&nbsp;shares are down roughly 20% on average, just like Tesla.</p><p>It looks as if Tesla is the benchmark for EV stocks just like the&nbsp;S&amp;P 500&nbsp;is the basis for comparison for U.S. stocks. That raises an interesting idea for EV investors: the Tesla version of beta. The beta concept can be thought of, in a sense, as a measure of a stock’s systemic risk. What happens to a market is linked to what happens to an individual stock by that stock’s beta.</p><p>If a stock, for instance, has a beta of 2, it would be expected to rise about 2% if the market rose 1%. Beta values aren’t always above 1. Gold-mining companies in theS&amp;P 500,for instance, have a beta of roughly 0.5, so they don’t rise as fast if the broader index goes up.</p><p>Investors can interpret the gold beta as saying roughly half of what happens to those golds stock is explained by what happens to the S&amp;P 500, and the other half is due to other factors, such as what’s going on with gold prices.</p><p>Beta is just a mathematical calculation. Investors, if they want, can calculate a stock’s beta relative to atmospheric pressure in Central Park. The math has to mean something, though, so no one does that. In the case of EVs, however, the idea of Tesla-as-risk to any EV stock doesn’t feel like a stretch.</p><p>The “Tesla beta” of the three Chinese EV stocks—NIO, XPeng and Li—is about 0.5. That can be interpreted, as with gold stocks, as saying about half of what happens to those three shares is a function of what happens to Tesla stock.</p><p>It’s an interesting idea. But what is happening to Tesla stock anyway?</p><p>It’s all about the potential for higher inflation. Increasing inflation, a growing concern in the market, tends to punish high-growth stocks more than low-growth stocks because of the way financial discount rates work. Most of Tesla’s cash flow comes in future years, and future cash flow is worth less today when interest rates rise.</p><p>Monday, many growth stocks took it on the chin. The&nbsp;Nasdaq Composite,known as the home of many fast-growing tech companies, fell 2.5%. Tesla’s beta value relative to the Nasdaq is about 2, so investors shouldn’t be surprised by a 5% drop in Tesla stock.</p><p>Tesla shares fell 9%, though. The extra 4% remains a mystery. The news site&nbsp;Electrek&nbsp;reported Tesla stopped taking orders for its lowest-priced Model Y, but high demand for lower-price EV models isn’t really a bad thing.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/728e2afa9536498c3500bf3fdae26f29\" tg-width=\"642\" tg-height=\"213\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p><p>CEO&nbsp;Elon Musk&nbsp;is also spending a lot of time tweeting about&nbsp;cryptocurrencies. That’s a problem for the entire EV sector.Tesla shares closed down 8.6% Monday at $714.50 a share. That leaves them down almost $186 from the 52-week high of $900.40 they reached in January. That’s a drop of roughly 21%.It seems odd to say, given that the term is usually applied to broad groups of stocks, but there is a new bear market—a drop of 20% from a high—in Tesla shares.Of course, Tesla is the 800-pound gorilla in the EV sector. It is worth almost as much as all other traditional car makers combined. And when Tesla stock drops, other EV stocks follow because Wall Street often relies on Tesla’s valuation to come up with price targets.Monday, shares of three other high-flying EV stocks with significant sales—NIO(NIO),XPeng(XPEV) andLi Auto(LI)—fell roughly 7% to 8%. And since Tesla stock hit its all-time high, NIO, XPeng and Li Auto shares are down roughly 20% on average, just like Tesla.It looks as if Tesla is the benchmark for EV stocks just like the S&P 500 is the basis for comparison for U.S. stocks. That raises an interesting idea for EV investors: the Tesla version of beta. The beta concept can be thought of, in a sense, as a measure of a stock’s systemic risk. What happens to a market is linked to what happens to an individual stock by that stock’s beta.If a stock, for instance, has a beta of 2, it would be expected to rise about 2% if the market rose 1%. Beta values aren’t always above 1. Gold-mining companies in theS&P 500,for instance, have a beta of roughly 0.5, so they don’t rise as fast if the broader index goes up.Investors can interpret the gold beta as saying roughly half of what happens to those golds stock is explained by what happens to the S&P 500, and the other half is due to other factors, such as what’s going on with gold prices.Beta is just a mathematical calculation. Investors, if they want, can calculate a stock’s beta relative to atmospheric pressure in Central Park. The math has to mean something, though, so no one does that. In the case of EVs, however, the idea of Tesla-as-risk to any EV stock doesn’t feel like a stretch.The “Tesla beta” of the three Chinese EV stocks—NIO, XPeng and Li—is about 0.5. That can be interpreted, as with gold stocks, as saying about half of what happens to those three shares is a function of what happens to Tesla stock.It’s an interesting idea. But what is happening to Tesla stock anyway?It’s all about the potential for higher inflation. Increasing inflation, a growing concern in the market, tends to punish high-growth stocks more than low-growth stocks because of the way financial discount rates work. Most of Tesla’s cash flow comes in future years, and future cash flow is worth less today when interest rates rise.Monday, many growth stocks took it on the chin. The Nasdaq Composite,known as the home of many fast-growing tech companies, fell 2.5%. Tesla’s beta value relative to the Nasdaq is about 2, so investors shouldn’t be surprised by a 5% drop in Tesla stock.Tesla shares fell 9%, though. The extra 4% remains a mystery. The news site Electrek reported Tesla stopped taking orders for its lowest-priced Model Y, but high demand for lower-price EV models isn’t really a bad thing.CEO Elon Musk is also spending a lot of time tweeting about cryptocurrencies. That might be unnerving Tesla investors. His tweeting, however, isn’t really any different than recent history.
