Genuine Parts</h2>\n<p>You may know aftermarket auto parts retailer <b>Genuine Parts</b> (NYSE:GPC) better as the owner of NAPA Auto Parts stores. It has a long history of outperformance with sales growing in 87 of the last 93 years (last year being <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> of those anomalies where revenue dropped, though for obvious reasons).</p>\n<p>Still, the long-term outlook remains not only positive, but quite upbeat. The auto industry was also hurt by the pandemic, which means people were buying new cars but keeping their rust buckets on the road longer and they'll need parts to keep them running.</p>\n<p>Worse for new car dealers, the computer chip shortage that's plaguing numerous industries, and the auto industry in particular, has manufacturers lowering expectations for production for the coming year. <b>Ford</b> just issued a fairly robust earnings report but its guidance that it expects production to fall by 1.1 million vehicles this year put a damper on its stock.</p>\n<p>Again, that means car owners will need to keep their current vehicles in good shape, so Genuine Parts will still be needed. And it's that constant ebb and flow of demand for people to fix their cars that has sustained the auto parts retailer over the past century, and will likely keep it motoring for at least another 100 years into the future. (Even if we're driving flying cars by then, owners will still need the parts to repair them.)</p>\n<p>One of the most attractive things about Genuine Parts, however, is its record of dividend payments. The company has paid investors a cash dividend every year since going public in 1928, and its payout this year of $3.26 per share represents the 65th consecutive year it increased the dividend, which currently yields 2.6% annually.</p>\n<h2>2. Leggett &amp; Platt</h2>\n<p>Robinhood's meme stock crowd would probably never pile into <b>Leggett &amp; Platt</b> (NYSE:LEG) because making innerspring coils for mattresses and sofas is not the sort of sexy play that pops up in internet chatrooms. Yet this study business has been around since 1883 and keeps chugging along largely out of view of the masses, but producing outsized returns for those in the know.</p>\n<p>Over the last 40 years, Leggett &amp; Platt has returned almost 10,600% for investors, compared to nearly 3,800% by the <b>S&amp;P 500</b>, meaning $10,000 invested in this oh-so-boring company at the start of 1980 would be worth well over $1 million today (the stock index would have generated $387,000 in the same time frame).</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9a359d21957cbcf9962e9b005b965fb7\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"435\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">Data by YCharts.</p>\n<p>Leggett &amp; Platt has done that by sticking to its knitting, or rather its steel coils. It rarely extends far outside those operations, which account for half of its annual revenue, and when it does it tends to be in closely related fields.</p>\n<p>Beyond mattresses and sofas, the company supplies the auto and aerospace industries, furniture manufacturers, and flooring and textile businesses with products that are in some fashion closely related to its core components, such as mechanical and lumbar support for seats; steel mechanisms and motion hardware for chairs; and synthetic fabrics for ground stabilization, drainage protection, erosion, and weed control.</p>\n<p>Yet like Genuine Parts, Leggett &amp; Platt is also a longtime dividend payer, and it notes that maintaining its inclusion in the list of Dividend Aristocrat stocks, or those companies that have increased their shareholder payout for 25 consecutive years or more, is a high priority for the company.</p>\n<p>The dividend actually ranks second on its list of priorities after investing in organic growth, and with 49 straight years of dividend hikes, Leggett &amp; Platt is poised to become a Dividend King, or a company with 50 or more years of raising its payout (a much smaller elite group of stocks, of which Genuine Parts is also a member).</p>\n<p>Because it is a conservatively run business in a fairly conservative industry, there's little reason why it shouldn't be able to keep going as it has for many years to come, and that's why Leggett &amp; The real value comes from holding on to your stocks for years -- decades is best -- and watching as their businesses grow and appreciate. It's not as exciting as taking a flier on a WallStreetBets stock, but buying good companies that still possess long-term potential and never selling is how you really accumulate wealth. That's why I plan to hold these two stocks forever.\n\nImage source: Getty Images.\n1. Genuine Parts\nYou may know aftermarket auto parts retailer Genuine Parts (NYSE:GPC) better as the owner of NAPA Auto Parts stores. It has a long history of outperformance with sales growing in 87 of the last 93 years (last year being one of those anomalies where revenue dropped, though for obvious reasons).\nStill, the long-term outlook remains not only positive, but quite upbeat. The auto industry was also hurt by the pandemic, which means people were buying new cars but keeping their rust buckets on the road longer and they'll need parts to keep them running.\nWorse for new car dealers, the computer chip shortage that's plaguing numerous industries, and the auto industry in particular, has manufacturers lowering expectations for production for the coming year. Ford just issued a fairly robust earnings report but its guidance that it expects production to fall by 1.1 million vehicles this year put a damper on its stock.\nAgain, that means car owners will need to keep their current vehicles in good shape, so Genuine Parts will still be needed. And it's that constant ebb and flow of demand for people to fix their cars that has sustained the auto parts retailer over the past century, and will likely keep it motoring for at least another 100 years into the future. (Even if we're driving flying cars by then, owners will still need the parts to repair them.)\nOne of the most attractive things about Genuine Parts, however, is its record of dividend payments. The company has paid investors a cash dividend every year since going public in 1928, and its payout this year of $3.26 per share represents the 65th consecutive year it increased the dividend, which currently yields 2.6% annually.\n2. Leggett & Platt\nRobinhood's meme stock crowd would probably never pile into Leggett & Platt (NYSE:LEG) because making innerspring coils for mattresses and sofas is not the sort of sexy play that pops up in internet chatrooms. Yet this study business has been around since 1883 and keeps chugging along largely out of view of the masses, but producing outsized returns for those in the know.\nOver the last 40 years, Leggett & Platt has returned almost 10,600% for investors, compared to nearly 3,800% by the S&P 500, meaning $10,000 invested in this oh-so-boring company at the start of 1980 would be worth well over $1 million today (the stock index would have generated $387,000 in the same time frame).\nData by YCharts.\nLeggett & Platt has done that by sticking to its knitting, or rather its steel coils. Some of the questions that came up in Saturday's livestream dealt with moves Berkshire made during the early stages of the pandemic last year -- including what led the company to exit most of its banking positions while loading up on<b>Bank of America</b>(NYSE:BAC). After months of speculation, Buffett gave a little bit of insight into what drove his decision making.</p>\n<p>Too much exposure</p>\n<p>Prior to the pandemic, Berkshire owned a slate of bank stocks, and Buffett seemed to have a bullish stance toward the sector. However, as stay-at-home orders and economic shutdowns spread across the country and banks braced for heavy loan losses, Buffett seemed to do a 180 and exited many of his holdings.</p>\n<p>Berkshire eliminated its stake in investment bank<b>Goldman Sachs</b>&nbsp;and eventually<b>JPMorgan Chase</b>, America's largest bank by assets. Berkshire also sold its position in regional banks like<b>PNC Financial Services Group</b>&nbsp;and<b>M&amp;T Bank</b>. And Buffett appears to be looking for an exit on former favorite<b>Wells Fargo</b>, selling shares gradually for the past several quarters.</p>\n<p>While all of this was going on, Buffett and Berkshire pumped more than $2 billion of stock into Bank of America and increased the company's stake to 11.9% of outstanding shares, a move that required special regulatory approval.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c2da7d6438277757a73f9e626ebc6fc2\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>IMAGE SOURCE: GETTY IMAGES.</p>\n<p>While we don't yet know what moves Buffett has made in 2021, he doesn't appear to have done much, since the cost basis of Berkshire's bank, insurance, and finance stocks after the first quarter was just slightly higher than it was at the end of 2020.</p>\n<p>During the Q&amp;A part of Berkshire's shareholder meeting, Buffett was asked why he had sold most of his bank stocks last year.</p>\n<p>\"I like banks generally, I just didn't like the proportion we had compared to the possible risk if we got the bad results that so far we haven't gotten,\" Buffett said. \"We overall didn't want as much in banks as we had.\"</p>\n<p>The Oracle of Omaha added: \"The banking business is way better than it was in the United States 10 or 15 years ago. The banking business around the world -- in various places -- might worry me. But our banks are in far, far better shape than 10 or 15 years ago. But when things froze for a short period of time, the biggest thing the banks had going for them was that the Federal Reserve was behind them, and the Federal Reserve is not behind Berkshire. It's up to us take care of ourselves.\"</p>\n<p>What to make of this</p>\n<p>Buffett is one of the greatest investing minds of all time, if not No. 1, so it's important to realize that it will be difficult for us to see these moves exactly as he does. And I can certainly appreciate his remark about having too much exposure. Keep in mind, Buffett is managing an equities portfolio of hundreds of billions of dollars, so a few percentage points one way or the other is huge. He needs to think about safety much more than your standard responsible investor (Buffett sometimes refers to himself as Berkshire's \"chief risk officer,\" and he did so again on Saturday). But it really is difficult for me to understand all these moves.</p>\n<p>Goldman Sachs is not very loan-heavy, so it didn't really face the same degree of risk as other large banks like Bank of America and JPMorgan Chase. Investment banks also tend to do better in periods of volatility, and Goldman is working to build up its consumerbankand asset and wealth management divisions to generate steadier revenues. Its reserves for loan losses peaked at $34 billion during 2020, but the bank was prepared for scenarios where its reserves would have peaked at $52 billion. JPMorgan also engineered its way through the Great Recession better than any of the largest banks in America. Buffett officially eliminated Berkshire's stake in JPMorgan in the fourth quarter of the year. Financial Secretary Paul Chan has previously estimated the economy will expand 3.5% to 5.5% in 2021, but that’s likely to be revised higher now, given the strong growth data.</p>\n<p>Citigroup Inc. raised its full-year growth forecast by 2 percentage points to 6%, while Goldman Sachs Group Inc. economists upgraded theirs to 9.2% from 4.6%.</p>\n<p>Still, economic activity remains below pre-recession levels as the pandemic and social distancing measures continue to weigh on consumer spending and tourism, the government said in its report Monday. While export demand is set to remain strong, “the revival of tourism-related activities will likely be slow in view of the still austere pandemic situation in many places around the world,” it said.</p>\n<p>“Gradual relaxation of social distancing bodes well for domestic activities,” said Raymond Yeung, chief economist for Greater China at Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Ltd. “What’s concerning is the relatively slow vaccination rate and the variant of virus strain.
