The Cannacord analyst,Jonathan Dorsheimer, backed up his bold assertion by noting that Tesla is involved in more than just cars, just like Apple does more than just make iPhones.</p><p>The Apple-like spin is admittedly aggressive, and maybe even a bit aspirational, but such is the nature of Tesla. Investors either believe in the vision of Tesla’s chief executive, Elon Musk, or they don’t. So far, it has paid to be a believer, and the stock’s Monday rally suggests that Tesla’s investors are looking for new reasons to be evangelical.</p><p>The reason to believe could come as early as April 26, when Tesla is scheduled to reports first-quarter earnings after the market closes. Should the stock surge, investors can shout hallelujah. Should the stock stumble, look for a baptism by fire.</p><p>With Tesla’s stock around $725, aggressive investors could consider buying Tesla’s April $735call optionsthat expire April 30 for $37.50.</p><p>If the stock is at $800, the call is worth $65. Should the stock be below the strike price at expiration, the trade fails, though the call could be adjusted within the options market to keep it alive.</p><p>During the past 52 weeks, Tesla stock has ranged from $134.76 to $900.40. So far this year, the stock is up about 3%, compared with a gain of 10% for the S&amp;P 500.</p><p>The last time we mentioned Tesla was in early April, just before the company reported first-quarter vehicle deliveries.</p><p>We then suggested that investors sell Tesla’s May $500 or May $550 put options to trade delivery data when the stock was around $661.75. So far, the trade has worked well. The May $500 puts are trading at $3.50, down from $11, and the May $550 puts are trading at $6.85, down from $20.</p><p>Securing profits is largely a matter of discipline. Some investors will secure profits with gains of 70% on the puts, others will go for 90%. With my parents being very money-minded and keeping a careful eye on my finances (still), I'm caught in a predicament. \n</p>\n<p>\n  The original plan was to save up 20% to 30% for a down payment on a condo in the suburbs of Los Angeles and buy into the market within the two years or so, and right now I'm about 40% towards that goal. \n</p>\n<p>\n  However, with the Green Act possibly on the horizon again, the Model 3 has been a temptation, especially with all the extra bonus incentives my state offers, with a net final price of around $27,000. I'm not desperately in need of a new car, but this seems like a great way to save some money on a vehicle with smart features. \n</p>\n<p>\n  I am 28 years old with zero debt as of January 2021. Retirement wise, I am well on my way to maxing out 401(k) contributions this year, and I have already maxed out my Roth IRA contributions, and if everything stays the same, I'll have about $60,000 in retirement by the end of the year. \n</p>\n<p>\n  In terms of liquid assets and investments, I'm sitting on about $45,000 as of right now. I currently save and/or invest 50% to 60% of my take-home pay, since I moved back home with my parents after being laid off last year, and started a new job remotely. \n</p>\n<p>\n  I don't know if I should (a) purchase the car straight up and empty out my savings as I will probably have the time to save up the money again before a potential housing crash, (b) not purchase the car and keep saving for the down payment, (c) do both or (d) invest the money elsewhere. \n</p>\n<p>\n  As financial conservatives, my parents are strongly against me buying the car because it's a depreciating asset, and they believe entering the market should be my priority, so they think that I should have the down payment waiting, to jump into the market whenever I see a good deal. \n</p>\n<p>\n  I believe I can buy the car and strap down, and save more aggressively to replenish the funds. Don't allow an automobile, regardless of how cool you think it would be to drive, to deter you from that destination. Listen to your parents. They have seen more than you have. With my parents being very money-minded and keeping a careful eye on my finances (still), I'm caught in a predicament. \n</p>\n<p>\n  The original plan was to save up 20% to 30% for a down payment on a condo in the suburbs of Los Angeles and buy into the market within the two years or so, and right now I'm about 40% towards that goal. \n</p>\n<p>\n  However, with the Green Act possibly on the horizon again, the Model 3 has been a temptation, especially with all the extra bonus incentives my state offers, with a net final price of around $27,000. I'm not desperately in need of a new car, but this seems like a great way to save some money on a vehicle with smart features. \n</p>\n<p>\n  I am 28 years old with zero debt as of January 2021. Retirement wise, I am well on my way to maxing out 401(k) contributions this year, and I have already maxed out my Roth IRA contributions, and if everything stays the same, I'll have about $60,000 in retirement by the end of the year. \n</p>\n<p>\n  In terms of liquid assets and investments, I'm sitting on about $45,000 as of right now. It has. \n</p>\n<p>\n  Now  the question for investors is how best to ride the long-term wave. \n</p>\n<p>\n  Shares of Tesla Inc. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/TSLA\">$(TSLA)$</a> soared last year, but during 2021, volatility has been painful for shorter-term investors whose timing has been less than ideal. Here's a price chart from the end of 2019: \n</p>\n<p>\n  That is an eye-pleasing chart, especially if you have been in the stock the whole time. But Tesla's shares fell 27% through April 1 from its intraday high Jan. 25. Then on April 5, the shares rose 4% following the company's report that it had delivered 184,800 electric vehicles during the first quarter . \n</p>\n<p>\n  Tesla is an expensive stock. The shares trade for 147.5 times the consensus earnings estimate for the next 12 months, among analysts polled by FactSet. Among those 35 analysts, less than a third rate Tesla a \"buy\" or the equivalent, and their consensus 12-month price target of $658.26 is slightly below where the shares closed April 1. \n</p>\n<p>\n  Tesla's biggest competitors in the EV space in the U.S. seem likely to be General Motors Co. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/GM\">$(GM)$</a>, Volkswagen AG  and Ford Motor Co. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/F\">$(F)$</a>, based on the companies' announced plans. \n</p>\n<p>\n  But there are many other ways to play this long-term secular trend. Semiconductor manufacturers will continue to benefit from the growth of EVs and makers of all sorts of components. Here's a recent screen of semiconductor stocks . \n</p>\n<p>\n  To come up with a broader list of EV and related stock plays that might have significant upside, we began by putting together a list of stocks held by <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> or more of these ETFs: \n</p>\n<p>\n  We looked at the holdings of three ETFs: \n</p>\n<p>\n  Adding the three portfolios and removing duplicates produced a list of 175 stocks, with 76 listed in the U.S. \n</p>\n<p>\n  Among those 175 stocks, 111 are covered by at least 10 analysts. It is good to have a large number of opinions factored-in -- if a company isn't widely covered by the brokerage industry, it might be overlooked by institutional investors (or paid by the few analysts who do cover it). \n</p>\n<p>\n  Among the pared list of 111 stocks, here are the 20 with more than two-thirds \"buy\" or equivalent ratings, with the most implied upside potential for the next 12 months: \n</p>\n<p>\n  Share prices and price targets in the table are in local currencies where the stocks or American depositary receipts are listed. \n</p>\n<p>\n  As always,  this type of list is only a start -- you should do your own research before investing in anything. The company provides hydrogen fuel-cell services. \n</p>\n<p>\n  Second on the list is Baidu Inc. (K3SD.SG), with analysts expecting a 59% gain. Here's a price chart from the end of 2019: \n</p>\n<p>\n  That is an eye-pleasing chart, especially if you have been in the stock the whole time. But Tesla's shares fell 27% through April 1 from its intraday high Jan. 25. Then on April 5, the shares rose 4% following the company's report that it had delivered 184,800 electric vehicles during the first quarter . \n</p>\n<p>\n  Tesla is an expensive stock. The shares trade for 147.5 times the consensus earnings estimate for the next 12 months, among analysts polled by FactSet. Investors that got used to earning over 80% return on the stock in the past two years must be anxious about shares spinning their wheels for the past several months. The stock has been down about 16% from the all-time high, and 10% off early September levels.</p>\n<p>To be clear, the recent lack of traction could be justified by the stock's outstanding performance prior to September 2020, and its need to consolidate (i.e., wait for much of the rest of the market to catch up) before climbing higher. While Apple takes a breather, I think investors could position themselves in the stock now and benefit over a multi-year period.</p>\n<p><b>Fundamentals look solid</b></p>\n<p>I challenge an unbiased analyst or investor to make a strong bearish case against Apple's fundamentals and growth opportunities:</p>\n<ul>\n <li>The iPhone's 5G upgrade cycle has been questioned, particularly after&nbsp;reports of soft demand&nbsp;for the smaller 12 mini. But otherwise, the Pro and Pro Max versions helped to&nbsp;lift iPhone sales&nbsp;in the holiday quarter substantially (see graph below), after a pitiful fiscal fourth quarter. Maybe more importantly, upcoming versions of Apple's smartphones will probably see increased demand as 5G networks expand across global markets.</li>\n</ul>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/dd7d7fa78d96342c588663825be779e3\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"348\"><span>Source: DM Martins Research, data from company reports</span></p>\n<ul>\n <li>Doubling service revenues in five years, between 2016 and 2020, was quite a feat. Off a much higher base, Apple could be ready to do it again through 2025, at least&nbsp;according to one analyst. I would not doubt it, since (1) the iPhone installed base is much larger now,at over 1 billion active devices, (2) new services keep getting added to the portfolio, even if some may not have caught on yet, and (3) the Apple One bundle could serve as a nudge for increased user penetration.</li>\n <li>The wearables revolution is probably still in the earlier innings. Apple joined the party when it launched the Watch in 2015 and followed through with the AirPods in late 2016. Both devices have proven successful,beyond many experts' initial projections. The \"next big thing\" is probably VR and AR technology and devices. Credible rumors that Apple might be gearing up to make a move here have already&nbsp;started to surface.</li>\n <li>Apple sits on $200 billion in cash (gross of debt), and the company might not even know what to do with so much money. Investment in growth is a given, with the ambitious&nbsp;development of the Apple Car&nbsp;a likely recipient of some cash infusion. But even an increase in share buybacks and dividends could also be on the table.</li>\n</ul>\n<p><b>What best explains the funk</b></p>\n<p>In addition to an old-fashioned pullback, following two very strong years of performance, I believe that there are two other key factors putting pressure on Apple shares.</p>\n<p>The first is rising yields. Higher interest rates can impact a company and its stock in many different ways (higher interest expenses, disincentive to borrow, etc.), but the most relevant is probably market sentiment. Just ahead of the reopening of the US economy and others around the world to follow,it has made more sense to be exposed&nbsp;to cyclical stocks since the announcement of the first fully-tested COVID-19 vaccine. Also, with yields rising, soon some might start to consider fixed income a viable investment once again, to the detriment of growth stocks.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/52143f5b78656200592c94ae3acf32ad\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"419\"><span>Data by YCharts</span></p>\n<p>The last time that the 30-year yield climbed substantially over a short period of time was in 2012-2013: up from 2.4% to 4.0% in about 18 months (see graph above, divide index level by 1,000 to arrive at rate). Notice that Apple traded opposite to the yield movement in that case, dropping in value when rates increased, and vice-versa. Worth noting, the stock began to recover about six months before yields peaked.</p>\n<p>The second possible explanation for weakness in Apple is tough comps in 2021, particularly in certain segments that benefited from the stay-at-home economy. The graph below shows that product categories once considered to be in their mature or declining life cycles, namely laptops and tablets, came back to life last year. Investors that got used to earning over 80% return on the stock in the past two years must be anxious about shares spinning their wheels for the past several months. The stock has been down about 16% from the all-time high, and 10% off early September levels.\nTo be clear, the recent lack of traction could be justified by the stock's outstanding performance prior to September 2020, and its need to consolidate (i.e., wait for much of the rest of the market to catch up) before climbing higher. While Apple takes a breather, I think investors could position themselves in the stock now and benefit over a multi-year period.\nFundamentals look solid\nI challenge an unbiased analyst or investor to make a strong bearish case against Apple's fundamentals and growth opportunities:\n\nThe iPhone's 5G upgrade cycle has been questioned, particularly after reports of soft demand for the smaller 12 mini. But otherwise, the Pro and Pro Max versions helped to lift iPhone sales in the holiday quarter substantially (see graph below), after a pitiful fiscal fourth quarter. Maybe more importantly, upcoming versions of Apple's smartphones will probably see increased demand as 5G networks expand across global markets.\n\nSource: DM Martins Research, data from company reports\n\nDoubling service revenues in five years, between 2016 and 2020, was quite a feat. Off a much higher base, Apple could be ready to do it again through 2025, at least according to one analyst. I would not doubt it, since (1) the iPhone installed base is much larger now,at over 1 billion active devices, (2) new services keep getting added to the portfolio, even if some may not have caught on yet, and (3) the Apple One bundle could serve as a nudge for increased user penetration.\nThe wearables revolution is probably still in the earlier innings. Apple joined the party when it launched the Watch in 2015 and followed through with the AirPods in late 2016. Both devices have proven successful,beyond many experts' initial projections. The \"next big thing\" is probably VR and AR technology and devices. Credible rumors that Apple might be gearing up to make a move here have already started to surface.\nApple sits on $200 billion in cash (gross of debt), and the company might not even know what to do with so much money. Investment in growth is a given, with the ambitious development of the Apple Car a likely recipient of some cash infusion. But even an increase in share buybacks and dividends could also be on the table.\n\nWhat best explains the funk\nIn addition to an old-fashioned pullback, following two very strong years of performance, I believe that there are two other key factors putting pressure on Apple shares.\nThe first is rising yields. Higher interest rates can impact a company and its stock in many different ways (higher interest expenses, disincentive to borrow, etc.), but the most relevant is probably market sentiment. Just ahead of the reopening of the US economy and others around the world to follow,it has made more sense to be exposed to cyclical stocks since the announcement of the first fully-tested COVID-19 vaccine. Also, with yields rising, soon some might start to consider fixed income a viable investment once again, to the detriment of growth stocks.\nData by YCharts\nThe last time that the 30-year yield climbed substantially over a short period of time was in 2012-2013: up from 2.4% to 4.0% in about 18 months (see graph above, divide index level by 1,000 to arrive at rate). Notice that Apple traded opposite to the yield movement in that case, dropping in value when rates increased, and vice-versa. Worth noting, the stock began to recover about six months before yields peaked.\nThe second possible explanation for weakness in Apple is tough comps in 2021, particularly in certain segments that benefited from the stay-at-home economy. The graph below shows that product categories once considered to be in their mature or declining life cycles, namely laptops and tablets, came back to life last year.
