Not every cyclical sector enjoyed the same success - industrials and materials have still been laggards - but the broad energy sector gained more than 10%. A few factors are at play here. OPEC has been hesitant to fully open up the crude oil production floodgates and that's helped keep the supply/demand curve imbalanced. It's gotten to the point now where there is a legitimate energy supply crunch that could last into the winter months. Energy prices are skyrocketing and that's been good for explorers and drillers, but it's creating a mini-crisis worldwide that could take some time to unwind. Add in the ongoing supply chain bottlenecks and we've got an unstable macro backdrop.</p>\n<p>Global energy demand, however, is expected to continue looking strong, especially as we get closer to the holiday travel season. The Fed has essentially confirmed that the U.S. economic recovery (with a few hiccups) is mostly on track to the point where the central bank is likely going to begin withdrawing some of its support later this year. In case you were wondering, the \"12 month\" funds spread out their exposures to contracts with expirations from 1 to 12 months out. The others, at least before the energy market crash last year, mostly focused on the nearest-month expiration contracts but have since expanded their strategies to avoid the chances such a debacle happens again. The figure is massive, as it has represented nearly 90% of the free cash flow that Apple has produced in fiscal 2021 so far.</p>\n<p>At this pace, and assuming a share price of $150 apiece, Apple can retire around 600 million shares per year going forward, or just short of 4% of the total number of shares outstanding annually. Give it five years, and Apple’s share count could drop by almost 20%.</p>\n<p>Think of the EPS calculation, which is net income divided by shares outstanding. Repurchases alone can boost Apple’s bottom line quite substantially. Share buybacks in Q2 has risen nearly 12% sequentially and 124% YOY. This is a strong rebound from the post-COVID period of uncertainty that led to a temporary reduction in repurchase activity.\nThis is a reminder for Apple stock investors that the Cupertino company’s share price can continue to benefit from stock buybacks. The Apple Maven recaps why this might be the case.\nFigure 1: Apple store in New York, NY.\nApple’s “secret sauce”\nA bit over a year ago,I talked about one of Apple’s tricks to driving share price higher in the past decade. “Tenfold in ten years” was possible not merely because of robust business fundamentals. Sure, the popularity of the iPhone and success of iPad contributed greatly to compelling stock performance. But share repurchase was also an important piece of the puzzle.\nThink about it: since 2011, Apple’s net income grew an impressive 190%. But at the same time, EPS (earnings per share) shot up by 325% over the same period. This “net income leverage” effect was only possible because share count was slashed by around 30% between 2013 and 2020. See chart below, which was published in June 2020 and not adjusted for the most recent stock split.\nFigure 2: Apple's net cash & shares outstanding since 2011.\nIn the S&P’s most recent report, Apple was cited as the leader of the pack in stock buybacks by “not only spending the most of any [company], but its Q2 expenditure ranked second highest in S&P history”. The Cupertino company seems highly committed to supporting its stock, which should be a bullish sign.\nApple Maven’s take: quick math\nContinuing to retire shares is, in my view, a crucial tenet of the investment thesis on AAPL stock – and Apple’s management team seems to agree. Year-to-date, the Cupertino company has spent $66.2 billion on repurchases, 20% more than in fiscal 2020. The figure is massive, as it has represented nearly 90% of the free cash flow that Apple has produced in fiscal 2021 so far.\nAt this pace, and assuming a share price of $150 apiece, Apple can retire around 600 million shares per year going forward, or just short of 4% of the total number of shares outstanding annually. Give it five years, and Apple’s share count could drop by almost 20%.\nThink of the EPS calculation, which is net income divided by shares outstanding. Repurchases alone can boost Apple’s bottom line quite substantially. It's essentially a reversal of the behavior we saw after the March interest rate peak where both groups actually gained more than 10% at the same time.</p>\n<p>One group that didn't suffer, however, was energy. Not every cyclical sector enjoyed the same success - industrials and materials have still been laggards - but the broad energy sector gained more than 10%. A few factors are at play here. OPEC has been hesitant to fully open up the crude oil production floodgates and that's helped keep the supply/demand curve imbalanced. It's gotten to the point now where there is a legitimate energy supply crunch that could last into the winter months. The Fed has essentially confirmed that the U.S. economic recovery (with a few hiccups) is mostly on track to the point where the central bank is likely going to begin withdrawing some of its support later this year. In case you were wondering, the \"12 month\" funds spread out their exposures to contracts with expirations from 1 to 12 months out. The others, at least before the energy market crash last year, mostly focused on the nearest-month expiration contracts but have since expanded their strategies to avoid the chances such a debacle happens again. Natural gas prices, in particular, have been taking off as some forecasters have begun predicting a cold snap for this winter. The<b>Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLE)</b>is the biggest name, but the<b>Invesco S&amp;P 500 Equal Weight Energy ETF (RYE)</b>, the<b>Fidelity MSCI Energy ETF (FENY)</b>, the<b>Vanguard Energy ETF (VDE)</b>and the<b>iShares Energy ETF (IYE)</b>are all represented with gains of at least 8%.</p>\n<p>The explorers were the best performing subgroup to be found within energy, but clean energy ETFs are nowhere to be found. Among the winners: the<b>VanEck Vectors Unconventional Oil &amp; Gas ETF (FRAK)</b>, the<b>Invesco Dynamic Energy Exploration &amp; Production ETF (PXE)</b>, the<b>SPDR S&amp;P Oil &amp; Gas Exploration &amp; Production ETF (XOP)</b>and the<b>iShares U.S. Oil &amp; Gas Explorers &amp; Producers ETF (IEO)</b>all delivered gains of at least 15% on the month.</p>\n<p>A fund that has made regular appearances on both the top and performing ETF lists, the<b>Breakwave Dry Bulk Shipping ETF (BDRY)</b>, is back on the leaderboard again with a 27% gain. Supply chain issues, again, are the main driver as ships still remain stranded in harbors for weeks at a time waiting to dock and delivery their loads. Shipping issues, which were originally expected to be only short-term in nature, I think could easily last into summer 2022 or beyond. Shipping costs are likely to remain sky high and that could play into BDRY's hands, but expect a LOT of volatility in this fund for a while.</p>\n<p>Other ETFs worth noting:</p>\n<p>Uranium ETFs have taken advantage of soaring prices over the past two months. The price of an ounce of uranium went from $30 in mid-August to as high as $50 recently before pulling back to its current level around $43. The<b>Global X Uranium ETF (URA)</b>is the best-known name of the group, returning more than 13%, but the<b>North Shore Global Uranium Mining ETF (URNM)</b>, a fund that has been around for nearly 2 years but is comparatively smaller, was the bigger winner logging a 22% return.</p>\n<p>China ETFs have done poorly,but that didn't stop the<b>Global X MSCI China Utilities ETF (CHIU)</b>from logging a 10% gain. This is a strong rebound from the post-COVID period of uncertainty that led to a temporary reduction in repurchase activity.</p>\n<p>This is a reminder for Apple stock&nbsp;investors that the Cupertino company’s share price can continue to benefit from stock buybacks. The Apple Maven recaps why this might be the case.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b3facec59ae76a6c28f4c5847600b4de\" tg-width=\"1240\" tg-height=\"886\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Figure 1: Apple store in New York, NY.</span></p>\n<p><b>Apple’s “secret sauce”</b></p>\n<p>A bit over a year ago,I talked about one of Apple’s tricks&nbsp;to driving share price higher in the past decade. “Tenfold in ten years” was possible not merely because of robust business fundamentals. Sure, the popularity of the iPhone and success of iPad contributed greatly to compelling stock performance. But share repurchase was also an important piece of the puzzle.</p>\n<p>Think about it: since 2011, Apple’s net income grew an impressive 190%. But at the same time, EPS (earnings per share) shot up by 325% over the same period. This “net income leverage” effect was only possible because share count was slashed by around 30% between 2013 and 2020. See chart below, which was published in June 2020 and not adjusted&nbsp;for the most recent stock split.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/10126c1a8a7f21648f44ba54c038c518\" tg-width=\"656\" tg-height=\"352\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Figure 2: Apple's net cash &amp; shares outstanding since 2011.</span></p>\n<p>In the S&amp;P’s most recent report, Apple was cited as the leader of the pack in stock buybacks by “not only spending the most of any [company], but its Q2 expenditure ranked second highest in S&amp;P history”. The Cupertino company seems highly committed to supporting its stock, which should be a bullish sign.</p>\n<p><b>Apple Maven’s take: quick math</b></p>\n<p>Continuing to retire shares is, in my view, a crucial tenet of the investment thesis on AAPL stock – and Apple’s management team seems to agree. Year-to-date, the Cupertino company has&nbsp;spent&nbsp;$66.2 billion on repurchases, 20% more than in fiscal 2020. The figure is massive, as it has represented nearly 90% of the free cash flow that Apple has produced in fiscal 2021 so far.</p>\n<p>At this pace, and assuming a share price of $150 apiece, Apple can retire around 600 million shares per year going forward, or just short of 4% of the total number of shares outstanding annually. Give it five years, and Apple’s share count could drop by almost 20%.</p>\n<p>Think of the EPS calculation, which is net income divided by shares outstanding. Repurchases alone can boost Apple’s bottom line quite substantially. Berkshire is netting nearly $800 million in annual income via dividends from Apple, and regular share repurchases are providing a positive lift on Apple's earnings per share.</p>\n<p>Meanwhile, cloud data-warehousing company Snowflake represents the first of what could be many tech stocks chosen by Buffett's investing lieutenants, Todd Combs and Ted Weschler. Since Buffett doesn't follow tech stocks all too closely, Combs and Weschler will be tasked with ensuring that Berkshire's portfolio offers some cutting-edge tech representation. These long periods of growth allow banks to take advantage of loan and deposit growth.</p>\n<p>Likewise, long periods of economic growth often lead to rising interest rates. As rates and yields rise, banks tend to reap the rewards via added net interest income. <b>Bank of America</b> (NYSE:BAC), the second-largest holding in Buffett's portfolio, is the most interest sensitive of the big bank stocks. Following its second-quarter operating results, Bank of America noted it would net $8 billion in extra net interest income in 12 months with a 100-basis-point parallel shift in the interest rate yield curve. Since this added income derives from outstanding loans, it would pretty much all go straight to BofA's bottom line.</p>\n<p>Another reason Buffett is a big fan of financials is their robust capital return programs. Take <b>U.S. Bancorp</b> (NYSE:USB) as a perfect example.
