Palantir is frequently lauded for its software capabilities, which provide customers with data intelligence insights that, ostensibly, improve managerial decision making, but I do not see Palantir as what everyone else does: a unique platform business cashing in on the big data market.</p>\n<p></p>\n<p>Palantir is best known for its various \"foundries.\" Palantir's foundries are data management and aggregation systems that assist institutions in efficiently centralizing and storing data. As businesses and government agencies collect more data, the complexities grow rapidly, necessitating the use of software solutions. Palantir is collaborating with businesses and governments to reduce complexity and make use of large data volumes for algorithmic predictions. Palantir has had some success with this type of business, if success is defined solely by sales growth. For example, Palantir's 3Q21 revenue increased by 36% YoY to $392 million. Palantir's main source of revenue, government revenues, increased by 34% YoY, while commercial revenues, which include all of Palantir's business activities outside of government, increased by 37% YoY.</p>\n<p></p>\n<p>Revenue growth, on the other hand, is not a concern for Palantir. Palantir's problems are much deeper, and there is clearly more than one issue here.</p>\n<p></p>\n<p>The first issue with Palantir is that, while the company's sales are increasing at a healthy clip, this is not translating into profits for shareholders. Palantir's revenue increased by 44% to $1.11 billion in the first three quarters of 2021. The sales forecast for 2021 calls for up to a 40% increase in sales. That's a good start, but what about profits?</p>\n<p></p>\n<p>Despite a 44% increase in revenue in 2021, Palantir's profit picture appears to be dire. The company lost $364 million in 2021 alone, and the year isn't even over yet. The total loss for the year could exceed $400 million. Not bad for a company that has been in operation for nearly 20 years and \"grows revenues at a 40% annual rate,\" right? Profits after nearly two decades of operation appear to be too high a bar for Palantir to clear.</p>\n<p></p>\n<p>The second major issue for Palantir, despite its big data allure, is its lack of scalability. Contrary to popular belief, Palantir is little more than a well-paid government consultant whose consulting business is not scalable in any way, shape, or form. Palantir also does not operate a \"platform business\" in the same way that Metaverse (NASDAQ:FB) or Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) do. For example, Metaverse collects customer data through a single platform, the Facebook platform. Netflix scales its moving streaming platform, which can add new customers at near-zero marginal costs. Palantir requires personnel to work with each individual client, coach them, and explain platform features. This is not a sustainable business model. It is a software-based consulting business model.</p>\n<p></p>\n<p>The third issue with Palantir, aside from its inability to operate profitably after two decades and its business model's lack of inherent scalability, is that profits made in Palantir's business are siphoned off by insiders who are compensated royally through stock packages at the expense of shareholders. Palantir has increased the number of shares by 12% in one year, and it now has more than 2 billion shares outstanding. As a result, business profits are primarily distributed to highly compensated insiders, rather than to the company's shareholders.</p>\n<p></p>\n<p><b>A Fantasy Valuation</b></p>\n<p>Let's be clear about what we're talking about. We are dealing with a company that is growing its sales by 30-40% per year, which means Palantir will have revenues in the $1.5 billion range by 2021. Give or take fifty million dollars. It is the same company that has a misunderstood \"platform business model,\" no profits after twenty years of operations, and prioritizes insider stock compensation over shareholder dilution in recent years. They are likely to see further dilution in the coming years.</p>\n<p></p>\n<p>Nonetheless, this company continues to trade at a sales multiple of twenty-four. This means that an investor pays 24 times the expected sales amount for the opportunity to invest in Palantir's loss-making \"big data prediction\" business. Palantir remains outrageously overvalued, despite a significant correction since November.</p>\n<p></p>\n<p></p>\n<p><b>My Conclusion</b></p>\n<p>I'd say the valuation is a joke or a calculation error if I didn't know any better. However, this does not appear to be the case. Apparently, a sizable portion of the investor population believes that Palantir, despite its lack of profits and excessive dilution, is worth 24 times sales. In normal circumstances, 24 times earnings would be excessive. Palantir's business has no scale, which calls into question the company's positioning as a growth stock. Palantir is expected to fall further as investors begin to exit high-multiple stocks. Our analysis shows that Palantir is extremely overvalued at the current levels and several issues are likely going to prevent its stock from appreciating further anytime soon. For that reason, we continue to believe that it’s better to avoid Palantir at the current price, as its upside appears to be limited.</p>\n<p><b>There Are Several Red Flags, Which You Shouldn’t Ignore</b></p>\n<p>Palantir specializes in creating custom software solutions for collecting data for its clients, who are mostly government agencies and public companies. While some might think that Palantir is a young company with lots of potential, the reality is that it’s not a startup, as it has been in the business for almost two decades already, and since that time it has managed to add less than 200 customers. As a result, the company is exposed to a limited pool of organizations, who generate most of the revenues. This is mostly because Palantir doesn’t have a scalable business. The value of the company’s average contract ranges from $5 million to $6 million, which prevents small and medium businesses from using its services. While Palantir tries to tackle this issue by offering its Foundry platform for the commercial sector at attractive terms, it’s still too soon to tell whether it will improve its affordability to most of the third parties and have any major impact on its financials in the long run.</p>\n<p>In addition, while bulls might want to deny this, but Palantir operates like a consulting company. The company has a special position of a forward-deployed engineer, who analyzes different processes of potential clients and then explains how Palantir’s software could help them improve their operations. Considering this, it’s safe to say that Palantir doesn’t have a unique business model since its whole proposition is that it can analyze the available data better than others. However, nothing stops new entrants from entering the field and offering similar solutions, and nothing stops organizations' internal IT departments from developing better tools to analyze all of the processes at a more affordable price.</p>\n<p>Another downside of Palantir is that despite the increase in margins and gross profit in recent quarters, it never made a profit in its history after being so long in the business. Its operating loss has onlywidenedin recent years from -$600 million in 2018 to -$1.17 billion in 2020, to -$1.22 billion in the last twelve months. This is due to the excessive stock-based compensation program that results in increased expenses and massive dilution, which is something that a lot of bulls tend to ignore. Let’s not forget that the company’s expenses relating to the SBC program increased by around 257% year over year last quarter and were $193 million. At the same time, Palantir already has 1.8 billion shares outstanding, an increase from 1.52 billion shares, which were outstanding at the end of last year. The problem is that the excessive SBC program will continue to be a major issue for the company’s investors since there are still 477 million optionsoutstanding, which will dilute the current shareholders by more than 20% if fully exercised.</p>\n<p>For that reason, we continue to believe that Palantir’s stock will continue to be an unattractive investment and it’ll likely continue to underperform the market. It’s already down ~15% since our bearisharticlewas published a month ago and we believe that there’s more room for a depreciation.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/facca499bd702a4193cac4eabbe4a9a2\" tg-width=\"1280\" tg-height=\"443\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Chart: Seeking Alpha</span></p>\n<p>Another reason to be bearish about Palantir is due to the fact that there’s an extreme selling pressure, which is created by the company’s insiders and its CEO in particular, who are constantly dumping their shares on an open market. In July alone insiderssoldin total $63 million worth of Palantir shares, which is only $31 million slightly less than what they sold in Q1 when the lockup period expired. Considering this and the fact that they still have ~10% ownership stake in the company, it’s safe to assume they’ll continue to sell their shares and create an even greater selling pressure, which is likely going to prevent the stock from significantly appreciating from the current levels.</p>\n<p><b>Valuation</b></p>\n<p>We created a discounted cash flow model to find Palantir’s fair value. By looking at the numbers below, we could safely say that Palantir is extremely overvalued to others, especially since its EBITDA margin of -72.8% is the worst among its peers, and at a market cap of ~$40 billion, its stock is overpriced.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/70de8f9f7b52ae29d77492ed21083982\" tg-width=\"751\" tg-height=\"335\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Source: Capital IQ</span></p>\n<p>By consolidating the DCF model and the relative valuation method and giving the former 75% weight in the final analysis, while giving the latter 25$ weight in the final analysis, we concluded that Palantir’s final fair value is $8.22 per share, which is significantly below its current market price of ~$22 per share.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/05db90bdfb26c691331c9cdede01a87b\" tg-width=\"595\" tg-height=\"297\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Source: Own estimates</span></p>\n<p><b>Takeaway</b></p>\n<p>Despite its advanced data software solutions, Palantir continues to be an unattractive investment in our opinion and its stock is unlikely to move significantly higher anytime soon. The company doesn’t have a unique proposition at an affordable price on the market and there’s every reason to believe that its expenses will continue to increase in the following years due to the higher inflation and increased competition, while its bottom line will continue to suffer. As a result, despite signing new multi-million contracts from time to time, it’s still hard to justify its ~$40 billion market cap. Considering this, we strongly believe that Palantir is not a value investment at this stage, and not a growth play as well since the dilution risk and the continuous selling pressure are likely going to prevent the appreciation of its stock anytime soon.</p>\n<p>While we don’t expect the stock to depreciate to its fair value of $8.22 per share in the foreseeable future, a decent decline from the current market price is more than possible, especially since the company already trades at 28 times its revenues and is considered to be overvalued. Our analysis shows that Palantir is extremely overvalued at the current levels and several issues are likely going to prevent its stock from appreciating further anytime soon. For that reason, we continue to believe that it’s better to avoid Palantir at the current price, as its upside appears to be limited.\nThere Are Several Red Flags, Which You Shouldn’t Ignore\nPalantir specializes in creating custom software solutions for collecting data for its clients, who are mostly government agencies and public companies. While some might think that Palantir is a young company with lots of potential, the reality is that it’s not a startup, as it has been in the business for almost two decades already, and since that time it has managed to add less than 200 customers. As a result, the company is exposed to a limited pool of organizations, who generate most of the revenues. This is mostly because Palantir doesn’t have a scalable business. The value of the company’s average contract ranges from $5 million to $6 million, which prevents small and medium businesses from using its services. While Palantir tries to tackle this issue by offering its Foundry platform for the commercial sector at attractive terms, it’s still too soon to tell whether it will improve its affordability to most of the third parties and have any major impact on its financials in the long run.\nIn addition, while bulls might want to deny this, but Palantir operates like a consulting company. The company has a special position of a forward-deployed engineer, who analyzes different processes of potential clients and then explains how Palantir’s software could help them improve their operations. Considering this, it’s safe to say that Palantir doesn’t have a unique business model since its whole proposition is that it can analyze the available data better than others. However, nothing stops new entrants from entering the field and offering similar solutions, and nothing stops organizations' internal IT departments from developing better tools to analyze all of the processes at a more affordable price.\nAnother downside of Palantir is that despite the increase in margins and gross profit in recent quarters, it never made a profit in its history after being so long in the business. Its operating loss has onlywidenedin recent years from -$600 million in 2018 to -$1.17 billion in 2020, to -$1.22 billion in the last twelve months. This is due to the excessive stock-based compensation program that results in increased expenses and massive dilution, which is something that a lot of bulls tend to ignore. Let’s not forget that the company’s expenses relating to the SBC program increased by around 257% year over year last quarter and were $193 million. At the same time, Palantir already has 1.8 billion shares outstanding, an increase from 1.52 billion shares, which were outstanding at the end of last year. The problem is that the excessive SBC program will continue to be a major issue for the company’s investors since there are still 477 million optionsoutstanding, which will dilute the current shareholders by more than 20% if fully exercised.\nFor that reason, we continue to believe that Palantir’s stock will continue to be an unattractive investment and it’ll likely continue to underperform the market. In July alone insiderssoldin total $63 million worth of Palantir shares, which is only $31 million slightly less than what they sold in Q1 when the lockup period expired. Considering this and the fact that they still have ~10% ownership stake in the company, it’s safe to assume they’ll continue to sell their shares and create an even greater selling pressure, which is likely going to prevent the stock from significantly appreciating from the current levels.\nValuation\nWe created a discounted cash flow model to find Palantir’s fair value. As a result, despite signing new multi-million contracts from time to time, it’s still hard to justify its ~$40 billion market cap. Still, by making sure you have cash available before the next crash, you set yourself up to be much better situated after the crash happens.</p>\n<p>There are a couple of key reasons for this. First, stock market crashes and job losses often go hand in hand with each other. If you lose your job after the market crashes, having a cash reserve can go a long way toward keeping you from having to sell near market lows.</p>\n<p>Second, if you have cash available, buying stocks <i>after </i>they've crashed is a great way to make your money work harder for you. Selling one cheap stock after a crash to buy another doesn't make all that much sense, but raising cash when stocks are pricy to invest when they're cheap can be a much smarter wealth building strategy.</p>\n<p>The key trade-off, of course, is that money you have set aside in cash isn't earning much in the way of a return at the moment, especially when compared to inflation. A good rule of thumb is that you need at least a 3-6 month emergency fund in cash. In addition, having around 5 or so years' worth of expenses you need your portfolio to cover in a less volatile and higher certainty investment than stocks can help you ride out typical downturns.</p>\n<h2>No. 2: Know the value of what you own</h2>\n<p>Ultimately, a share of stock is nothing more than a fractional ownership stake in a business. A reasonable value can be estimated for most companies by using techniques like the discounted cash flow model to assess the current value of its expected future earnings stream. In a rapidly rising market, relying on valuations can seem old school, but when the market is crashing, valuation plays a much bigger role.</p>\n<p>A key reason is this: if you can buy a company for a reasonable or even cheap price based on its ability to generate cold hard cash, why would you sell just because the market is panicking? Indeed, a discounted cash flow analysis or other fundamentals-based valuation technique can help the savviest investors know why it's OK to buy more shares even as the market is collapsing.</p>\n<p>Beyond that, understanding what a company is really worth can help you prepare for a crash. If a stock you own has risen to the point where there is absolutely no financial justification for its market price, it might be a good candidate to sell to raise the cash you need.</p>\n<h2>No. 3: Have a shopping list of companies you want to buy</h2>\n<p>Even the best investors can feel overwhelmed as the market moves swiftly and strongly against them. That's where having a plan for what you'd like to buy -- and at what price -- can come in handy. With a list of great companies and a reasonable valuation estimate for each of them, a market crash can turn into an incredible buying opportunity to buy their stocks while they're on sale.</p>\n<p>Of course, you do need to keep in mind that the market often has a good reason for crashing in the first place. At 24 times sales, I believe PLTR stock is still significantly overvalued, and investors should brace themselves for new lows.</p>\n<p></p>\n<p><b>A Government Consulting Business With Three Major Issues</b></p>\n<p>Someone needs to explain to me what all the fuss is about with the big data analytics company Palantir. Palantir is frequently lauded for its software capabilities, which provide customers with data intelligence insights that, ostensibly, improve managerial decision making, but I do not see Palantir as what everyone else does: a unique platform business cashing in on the big data market.</p>\n<p></p>\n<p>Palantir is best known for its various \"foundries.\" Palantir's foundries are data management and aggregation systems that assist institutions in efficiently centralizing and storing data. As businesses and government agencies collect more data, the complexities grow rapidly, necessitating the use of software solutions. Palantir is collaborating with businesses and governments to reduce complexity and make use of large data volumes for algorithmic predictions. Palantir has had some success with this type of business, if success is defined solely by sales growth. For example, Palantir's 3Q21 revenue increased by 36% YoY to $392 million. Palantir's main source of revenue, government revenues, increased by 34% YoY, while commercial revenues, which include all of Palantir's business activities outside of government, increased by 37% YoY.</p>\n<p></p>\n<p>Revenue growth, on the other hand, is not a concern for Palantir. Palantir's problems are much deeper, and there is clearly more than one issue here.</p>\n<p></p>\n<p>The first issue with Palantir is that, while the company's sales are increasing at a healthy clip, this is not translating into profits for shareholders. Palantir's revenue increased by 44% to $1.11 billion in the first three quarters of 2021. The sales forecast for 2021 calls for up to a 40% increase in sales. That's a good start, but what about profits?</p>\n<p></p>\n<p>Despite a 44% increase in revenue in 2021, Palantir's profit picture appears to be dire. The company lost $364 million in 2021 alone, and the year isn't even over yet. The total loss for the year could exceed $400 million. Not bad for a company that has been in operation for nearly 20 years and \"grows revenues at a 40% annual rate,\" right? Profits after nearly two decades of operation appear to be too high a bar for Palantir to clear.</p>\n<p></p>\n<p>The second major issue for Palantir, despite its big data allure, is its lack of scalability. Contrary to popular belief, Palantir is little more than a well-paid government consultant whose consulting business is not scalable in any way, shape, or form. Palantir also does not operate a \"platform business\" in the same way that Metaverse (NASDAQ:FB) or Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) do. For example, Metaverse collects customer data through a single platform, the Facebook platform. Netflix scales its moving streaming platform, which can add new customers at near-zero marginal costs. Palantir requires personnel to work with each individual client, coach them, and explain platform features. This is not a sustainable business model. It is a software-based consulting business model.</p>\n<p></p>\n<p>The third issue with Palantir, aside from its inability to operate profitably after two decades and its business model's lack of inherent scalability, is that profits made in Palantir's business are siphoned off by insiders who are compensated royally through stock packages at the expense of shareholders. Palantir has increased the number of shares by 12% in one year, and it now has more than 2 billion shares outstanding. As a result, business profits are primarily distributed to highly compensated insiders, rather than to the company's shareholders.</p>\n<p></p>\n<p><b>A Fantasy Valuation</b></p>\n<p>Let's be clear about what we're talking about. We are dealing with a company that is growing its sales by 30-40% per year, which means Palantir will have revenues in the $1.5 billion range by 2021. Give or take fifty million dollars. It is the same company that has a misunderstood \"platform business model,\" no profits after twenty years of operations, and prioritizes insider stock compensation over shareholder dilution in recent years. They are likely to see further dilution in the coming years.</p>\n<p></p>\n<p>Nonetheless, this company continues to trade at a sales multiple of twenty-four. This means that an investor pays 24 times the expected sales amount for the opportunity to invest in Palantir's loss-making \"big data prediction\" business. Palantir remains outrageously overvalued, despite a significant correction since November.</p>\n<p></p>\n<p></p>\n<p><b>My Conclusion</b></p>\n<p>I'd say the valuation is a joke or a calculation error if I didn't know any better. However, this does not appear to be the case. Apparently, a sizable portion of the investor population believes that Palantir, despite its lack of profits and excessive dilution, is worth 24 times sales. In normal circumstances, 24 times earnings would be excessive. Palantir's business has no scale, which calls into question the company's positioning as a growth stock. Palantir is expected to fall further as investors begin to exit high-multiple stocks. At 24 times sales, I believe PLTR stock is still significantly overvalued, and investors should brace themselves for new lows.\n\nA Government Consulting Business With Three Major Issues\nSomeone needs to explain to me what all the fuss is about with the big data analytics company Palantir. Palantir is frequently lauded for its software capabilities, which provide customers with data intelligence insights that, ostensibly, improve managerial decision making, but I do not see Palantir as what everyone else does: a unique platform business cashing in on the big data market.\n\nPalantir is best known for its various \"foundries.\" Palantir's foundries are data management and aggregation systems that assist institutions in efficiently centralizing and storing data. As businesses and government agencies collect more data, the complexities grow rapidly, necessitating the use of software solutions. Palantir is collaborating with businesses and governments to reduce complexity and make use of large data volumes for algorithmic predictions. Palantir has had some success with this type of business, if success is defined solely by sales growth. For example, Palantir's 3Q21 revenue increased by 36% YoY to $392 million. Palantir's main source of revenue, government revenues, increased by 34% YoY, while commercial revenues, which include all of Palantir's business activities outside of government, increased by 37% YoY.\n\nRevenue growth, on the other hand, is not a concern for Palantir. Palantir's problems are much deeper, and there is clearly more than one issue here.\n\nThe first issue with Palantir is that, while the company's sales are increasing at a healthy clip, this is not translating into profits for shareholders. Palantir's revenue increased by 44% to $1.11 billion in the first three quarters of 2021. The sales forecast for 2021 calls for up to a 40% increase in sales. That's a good start, but what about profits?\n\nDespite a 44% increase in revenue in 2021, Palantir's profit picture appears to be dire. The company lost $364 million in 2021 alone, and the year isn't even over yet. The total loss for the year could exceed $400 million. Not bad for a company that has been in operation for nearly 20 years and \"grows revenues at a 40% annual rate,\" right? Profits after nearly two decades of operation appear to be too high a bar for Palantir to clear.\n\nThe second major issue for Palantir, despite its big data allure, is its lack of scalability. Contrary to popular belief, Palantir is little more than a well-paid government consultant whose consulting business is not scalable in any way, shape, or form. Palantir also does not operate a \"platform business\" in the same way that Metaverse (NASDAQ:FB) or Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) do. For example, Metaverse collects customer data through a single platform, the Facebook platform. Netflix scales its moving streaming platform, which can add new customers at near-zero marginal costs. Palantir requires personnel to work with each individual client, coach them, and explain platform features. This is not a sustainable business model. It is a software-based consulting business model.\n\nThe third issue with Palantir, aside from its inability to operate profitably after two decades and its business model's lack of inherent scalability, is that profits made in Palantir's business are siphoned off by insiders who are compensated royally through stock packages at the expense of shareholders. Palantir has increased the number of shares by 12% in one year, and it now has more than 2 billion shares outstanding. As a result, business profits are primarily distributed to highly compensated insiders, rather than to the company's shareholders.\n\nA Fantasy Valuation\nLet's be clear about what we're talking about. We are dealing with a company that is growing its sales by 30-40% per year, which means Palantir will have revenues in the $1.5 billion range by 2021. Give or take fifty million dollars. It is the same company that has a misunderstood \"platform business model,\" no profits after twenty years of operations, and prioritizes insider stock compensation over shareholder dilution in recent years. They are likely to see further dilution in the coming years.\n\nNonetheless, this company continues to trade at a sales multiple of twenty-four. This means that an investor pays 24 times the expected sales amount for the opportunity to invest in Palantir's loss-making \"big data prediction\" business. Palantir remains outrageously overvalued, despite a significant correction since November.\n\n\nMy Conclusion\nI'd say the valuation is a joke or a calculation error if I didn't know any better. However, this does not appear to be the case. Apparently, a sizable portion of the investor population believes that Palantir, despite its lack of profits and excessive dilution, is worth 24 times sales. In normal circumstances, 24 times earnings would be excessive. Palantir's business has no scale, which calls into question the company's positioning as a growth stock. Palantir is expected to fall further as investors begin to exit high-multiple stocks.
