It’s the resilience of the marketplace, it suggests to me the trend is still intact,\" said David Joy, chief market strategist at Ameriprise Financial in Boston.\n\"Maybe the numbers were a surprise to the analyst community but not the reasons for the disappointment so there is still a general view that this is not business lost but business postponed and the trend in the economy and in the market continues to be to the upside.\"\nThe Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 89.08 points, or 0.25%, to 35,819.56, the S&P 500 gained 8.96 points, or 0.19%, to 4,605.38 and the Nasdaq Composite added 50.27 points, or 0.33%, to 15,498.39.\nThe S&P 500 had fallen as much as 0.65% earlier in the day. price pressures and clogs in the supply chain, and a solid earnings season has helped investors overlook a mixed macroeconomic picture with a Federal Reserve that is poised to begin to trim its massive bond purchases soon.\nThe central bank's next policy announcement is on Nov. 3.\nData showed U.S. consumer spending increased solidly in September, while inflation pressures are In fact, Blackrock is getting ready to unleash a new exchange traded fund focusing on Chinese technology stocks.
\n
The move comes weeks after a competitor overtook its largest China focused U.S. ETF,Bloomberg reported this week.
\n
The new ETF is going to be called the iShares MSCI China Multisector Tech ETF and it will passively track an index of tech and tech-related stocks. The new ETF will be similar to the $7 billion KraneShares CSI China Internet Fund, which has seen massive inflows this year amidst the pullback in China-based equities.
\n
The KraneShares CSI China Internet Fund overtook Blackrock's current largest China ETF, the iShares MSCI China ETF, to become the largest of its kind.
\n
Despite the recent ballooning of assets in the KraneShares ETF, it has fallen almost 60% this year in the midst of China's ongoing regulatory crackdown.
\n
Blackrock now has about 400 ETFs that total $6.7 trillion in assets in the U.S. industry. Seven additional ETFs have debuted this year from the asset manager, Bloomberg reported. Elsewhere, economic data on consumer confidence is also due for release.
\n
The Senate is expected to vote Monday on a procedural motion over the legislation passed by the House of Representatives last week. That bill included a plan to temporarily fund the government through early December, and came alongside a measure to raise the government debt ceiling through December 2022.
\n
The latter point has been an area of contention for Senate Republicans, who are only narrowly outnumbered by Democratic lawmakers in both chambers and who have threatened to block the bill in its current form.
\n
Senate Republicans including Minority Leader Mitch McConnell have suggested that Democratic lawmakers should use the budget reconciliation process to raise the debt ceiling without Republican support. McConnell has, however, supported a short-term government funding bill that excludes a debt ceiling suspension.
\n
\"If they [the Democrats] want to tax, borrow and spend historic sums of money without our input, they’ll have to raise the debt limit without our help. The reminder served as a standard warning one week out from Congress's deadline to reach an agreement to at least temporarily continue funding the government.
\n
Though leaders of both political parties have agreed that a continuing resolution to avoid the shutdown at the end of the month is needed, the ongoing tension over raising the debt limit has served as a potential roadblock in this effort.
\n
\"We still expect Congress to avert a partial government shutdown at the start of October. Republicans won’t vote for the current continuing resolution being touted by the Democratic leadership, which also includes a new debt ceiling suspension,\" wrote Paul Ashworth, chief North America economist for Capital Economics, in a note Friday. \"But we expect a Plan B to emerge next week with the latter stripped out, which Republicans will support.\"
\n
\"The bigger issue is that there doesn’t appear to be an easy path to raising the debt ceiling by mid-October, which is when estimates suggest the Treasury’s will exhaust the 'extraordinary measures it is currently using to keep the lights on,\" he added.
\n
Investors have also grown jittery as the debates wore on, with stocks posting their worst day since May last week amid a confluence of concerns that also included debt concerns with China Evergrande.
\n
Many strategists, however, have suggested market participants need not be overly concerned about the impacts of a potential government shutdown.
\n
\"Historically, we've seen that government shutdowns tend to be short-lived,\" Jordan Jackson, JPMorgan Asset Management global market strategist, told Yahoo Finance Live on Friday. \"We also know that for those non-essential federal employees, they do get furlough pay as well.\"
\n
\"If it lasts more than 30 days, it's certainly going to have a bigger impact on the economy. But generally speaking, these shutdowns tend to be short-lived and markets — while they may correct in the short-term — they do sort of continue to grind higher,\" he added. \"I think it's certainly a risk in terms of a short-term mini correction there. But again, with all the liquidity out there, I think any sort of blip in the markets will be short-lived.\"
\n
Historical equity performance during and immediately following a government shutdown has also tended to point to a muted market impact.
\n
\"In the 14 government shutdowns since 1980, the S&P 500 generated median returns of -0.1% on the dates of budget authority expiration, 0.1% during the shutdown periods, and 0.3% on the dates of resolution,\" David Kostin, Goldman Sachs chief equity strategist, wrote in a note published on Sept. 21.
\n
\"One notable exception was the most recent federal shutdown in December 2018, when the S&P 500 fell 2% on the spending authority expiration date,\" he added. \"However, this decline was likely driven primarily by investor concerns about Fed tightening.\"
\n
Kostin also noted that the typical government shutdown since 1980 has only lasted three days before ultimately being resolved. More recent shutdowns have lasted several times longer, however, with the duration of the four most recent federal shutdowns averaging 18 days, Kostin said.
\n
Consumer confidence
\n
On the economic data front, one of the most closely watched new pieces of data will be on consumer confidence.
\n
The Conference Board is set to release its September consumer confidence index Tuesday morning. Economists expect the index to tick up only slightly compared to August, with consumers' views on the coronavirus and rising prices stabilizing near the lowest level since February.
\n
Specifically, consensus economists are looking for the index to rise to 115.0 in September after dropping to 113.8 in August. During the last monthly report, consumers' assessments of current business and labor market conditions both eased, and expectations for the next six months out also deteriorated.
\n
\"Consumer confidence fell to a six-month low in August, due to concerns around the Delta variant and inflation,\" wrote Bank of America economist Michelle Meyer in a note on Friday. \"We think these concerns largely remained in September.\"
\n
At the time, Lynn Franco, senior director of economic indicators at the Conference Board, said it was still \"too soon to conclude\" whether decline in consumer confidence would \"result in consumers significantly curtailing their spending in the months ahead.\"
\n
The latest spending data has also been equivocal. The Commerce Department's latest report showed retail sales rose 0.7% in August after declining in July. However, the categories posting the biggest declines were areas like e-commerce shops and grocery stores, suggesting consumer behavior was shifting back toward stay-in-place trends and away from in-person events like restaurant dining amid the latest wave of the coronavirus.
\n
Economic calendar
\n
\n

Monday: Durable goods orders, August preliminary (0.6% expected, -0.1% in July); More recent shutdowns have lasted several times longer, however, with the duration of the four most recent federal shutdowns averaging 18 days, Kostin said.\nConsumer confidence\nOn the economic data front, one of the most closely watched new pieces of data will be on consumer confidence.\nThe Conference Board is set to release its September consumer confidence index Tuesday morning. Economists expect the index to tick up only slightly compared to August, with consumers' views on the coronavirus and rising prices stabilizing near the lowest level since February.\nSpecifically, consensus economists are looking for the index to rise to 115.0 in September after dropping to 113.8 in August. During the last monthly report, consumers' assessments of current business and labor market conditions both eased, and expectations for the next six months out also deteriorated.\n\"Consumer confidence fell to a six-month low in August, due to concerns around the Delta variant and inflation,\" wrote Bank of America economist Michelle Meyer in a note on Friday. \"We think these concerns largely remained in September.\"\nAt the time, Lynn Franco, senior director of economic indicators at the Conference Board, said it was still \"too soon to conclude\" whether decline in consumer confidence would \"result in consumers significantly curtailing their spending in the months ahead.\"\nThe latest spending data has also been equivocal. The Commerce Department's latest report showed retail sales rose 0.7% in August after declining in July. However, the categories posting the biggest declines were areas like e-commerce shops and grocery stores, suggesting consumer behavior was shifting back toward stay-in-place trends and away from in-person events like restaurant dining amid the latest wave of the coronavirus.\nEconomic calendar\n\nMonday: Durable goods orders, August preliminary (0.6% expected, -0.1% in July); Durable goods volatility is a mistake.
\n
Better, faster, smarter: Upstart uses a cloud-based artificial intelligence platform to improve, expand and speed up the lending process for borrowers and for lenders.
\n
Upstart is an innovative leader, and it sits in the very early innings of a massive long-term secular trend.
\n
Looking for a helping hand in the market? Members of Big Dividends PLUS get exclusive ideas and guidance to navigate any climate.
\n
\n
The digital revolution is increasingly fueled bycloud-based artificial intelligence(AI), and its long-term growth potential is astounding. However from an investment perspective, investors often miss out on the best long-term growth opportunities because they are fearful of near-term volatility. Every investor needs to understand their own personal situation and goals. If you are a long-term growth investor, with the stomach to handle a wild near-term ride, AI lending platform Upstart (UPST) has massive long-term growth potential. In this report, we review the business, the market opportunity, valuation, risks and then conclude with an important takeaway about investing.
\n
About Upstart
\n
Upstart is an AI-driven, cloud-based, lending platform that connects consumer demand for loans with Upstart's network of banks. Upstart differentiates itself from traditional lending practices by using alternative borrower evaluation metrics that allow it to approve more loans, at better rates, and with low defaults. For example, 71% of Upstart loans are instantly approved and fully automated).
\n
(source:Upstart)
\n
Important to note, Upstart generates the majority of its revenue from referral fees (~60% of total revenues). Specifically, Upstart charges banks referral fees of 3% to 4% (of the principal loan value) when a lender opts to use that bank. Not only is this an attractive revenue source, but it is low risk because Upstart is not making the loan—the bank is (therefore the bank has all the credit risk).
\n
Another significant portion of Upstart total revenue (~30%) comes from platform fees. Specifically, Upstart charges banks ~2% of the loan amount when the bank uses Upstart’s platform.
\n
The remaining ~10% of total revenue comes from other servicing fees (and a small amount of interest income).
\n
Upstart's AI Lending Model
\n
Upstart is the only major online lender that currently goes beyond the traditional FICO score in making lending decisions. For example, Upstart is able to assess borrowers based on where they went to school, their job history and other non-traditional metrics as you can see in the graphic below:
\n
(source:Upstart earnings presentation)
\n
As Upstart explains on itswebsite:
\n
\n \"Lending is centuries old, but has changed little in recent decades. Traditional lenders use simple FICO-based models to decide who is approved for credit and at what interest rate. While simple and intuitive, these “scorecard” methods are limited in their ability to quantify risk.\"\n
\n
Massive Market Opportunity
\n
Cloud-based AI lending is just getting started, and this is a massive secular trend with an extremely long runway for growth. For example, Upstart generated $194 million in revenue last quarter (up 108% year-over-year), but defines its total addressable(TAM)opportunity as much larger, per the following graphic.
\n
(source: Upstart)
\n
For perspective, Upstart currently focuses on unsecured personal loans (such as credit card consolidation, home improvement loans, medical loans, wedding loans and moving loans) with sizes ranging between $1,000 and $50,000. And more recently has expanded into auto loans. However, there is a much larger market opportunity out there still, as Upstart continues to build out and improve its platform. Basically, Upstart has massive long-term growth opportunities, and the company is just getting started.
\n
Leadership
\n
Worth mentioning, Upstart was incorporated in 2012 (and became public in December of 2020), and it is run by co-founder and CEO,Dave Girouard. Dave was previously a big-wig at Google (GOOGL). He also worked at Apple (AAPL) and Booz Allen Hamilton. Having a founder-led business is another attractive quality of Upstart, in our view.
\n
The company’s other co-founder,Paul Gu, runs Upstart’s Product and Data Science team. Again, we like founder-run businesses. Both Dave and Paul (along with other insiders) own a significant portion of the company’s business (i.e. we like to see skin in the game).
\n
Valuing Upstart
\n
One of the first things that investors notice about Upstart is the extraordinarily rapid ascent of the share price in recent months, especially sinceannouncingearnings last month (whereby the company beat earnings and revenue expectations, and significantly raised forward guidance).
\n
(source: YCharts)
\n
But rather than looking simply at the share price, it is important to consider price in relation to other fundamental metrics, such as revenue and future growth expectations. For example, here is a look at Upstart's price-to-sales and forward price-to-sales metrics since going public.
\n
(source: YCharts)
\n
Importantly, you'll notice the wide gap between current P/S and forward P/S; this is a result of the high growth expectation/guidance from the company. However, looking only 1-year ahead doesn't nearly do justice to the true long-term growth opportunity that Upstart presents. For example, the company's very high growth rate can likely continue for many years into the future considering the massive TAM and differentiated product. This is where valuation becomes more of an art than a science considering if we extrapolate the growth rate several years (and beyond) into the future, the price-to-sales ratio quickly becomes quite low. For perspective, 24.4x forward sales is expensive relative to most publicly traded companies, but most publicly traded companies do not have anywhere near the high growth trajectory of Upstart (and 24.4x isn't really that high as compared to other companies with high sales growth trajectories and large TAMs).
\n
Further, Upstart's growth is attractive because the margins are strong and the company is already profitable (many high growth companies have negative net income while they focus on growth).
\n
(source: StockRover)
\n
Overall, it is impossible to assign a precise valuation to Upstart (because the future is unknown), however it is not impossible to see the high growth trajectory, the large TAM, the attractive business model, and the potential for these shares to go dramatically higher still in the long-term.
\n
Risks
\n
Volatility Risk: No one knows where the stock market will be tomorrow or next month, but over the long-term it is likely going higher and Upstart is likely going higher at a dramatically higher rate considering its leadership position and the opportunities (TAM) that are ahead. For example, as the company notes in its most recent10Q:
\n
\n \"Our quarterly results are likely to fluctuate and as a result may adversely affect the trading price of our common stock.\"\n
\n
Technically speaking, for the long-term investor, volatility is not a risk (it's often just the price of admission). And if you have the stomach to buy and hang-on, five years down the road there is a good chance you will be extremely happy you did.
\n
Concentration Risk:Credit Karma accounts for almost 1/2 of all loan origination so far in 2021. Per Upstart's10Q:
\n
\n ...for each of the six months ended June 30, 2020 and 2021, 49% of loan originations were derived from traffic from Credit Karma. However it is important to note, the direct-to-Upstart revenue channel is growing rapidly (a very good sign).
\n
Another concentration risk (noted in the company's 10Q) is that Cross River Bank and one other bank partner account for a substantial portion of the total number of loans facilitated by Upstart's platform and its revenue. However, as the non-FICO fintech lending space expands, the expectation is that this reliance will decline. For example, Upstart CEO Dave Girouard recentlysaid:
\n
\n \"he'd be shocked in a couple of years if we don't have hundreds of banks and credit unions on the platform.\"\n
\n
In fact, if Upstart continues to overcome these concentration risks (which the company expects to) it will be a further catalyst for dramatic upside for the business and the share price.
\n
Conclusion
\n
Despite recent share price gains, Upstart still has massive long-term upside potential. This is a business that sits in the early innings of a massive long-term secular trend, as we also wrote about in this recent article:3 Top Fintech Stocks(Secular Behemoths in the Making). Members of Big Dividends PLUS get exclusive ideas and guidance to navigate any climate.\n\nThe digital revolution is increasingly fueled bycloud-based artificial intelligence(AI), and its long-term growth potential is astounding. In this report, we review the business, the market opportunity, valuation, risks and then conclude with an important takeaway about investing.\nAbout Upstart\nUpstart is an AI-driven, cloud-based, lending platform that connects consumer demand for loans with Upstart's network of banks. Upstart differentiates itself from traditional lending practices by using alternative borrower evaluation metrics that allow it to approve more loans, at better rates, and with low defaults. For example, 71% of Upstart loans are instantly approved and fully automated).\n(source:Upstart)\nImportant to note, Upstart generates the majority of its revenue from referral fees (~60% of total revenues). Specifically, Upstart charges banks referral fees of 3% to 4% (of the principal loan value) when a lender opts to use that bank. Not only is this an attractive revenue source, but it is low risk because Upstart is not making the loan—the bank is (therefore the bank has all the credit risk).\nAnother significant portion of Upstart total revenue (~30%) comes from platform fees. Specifically, Upstart charges banks ~2% of the loan amount when the bank uses Upstart’s platform.\nThe remaining ~10% of total revenue comes from other servicing fees (and a small amount of interest income).\nUpstart's AI Lending Model\nUpstart is the only major online lender that currently goes beyond the traditional FICO score in making lending decisions. For example, Upstart is able to assess borrowers based on where they went to school, their job history and other non-traditional metrics as you can see in the graphic below:\n(source:Upstart earnings presentation)\nAs Upstart explains on itswebsite:\n\n\"Lending is centuries old, but has changed little in recent decades. Traditional lenders use simple FICO-based models to decide who is approved for credit and at what interest rate. While simple and intuitive, these “scorecard” methods are limited in their ability to quantify risk.\"\n\nMassive Market Opportunity\nCloud-based AI lending is just getting started, and this is a massive secular trend with an extremely long runway for growth. For example, Upstart generated $194 million in revenue last quarter (up 108% year-over-year), but defines its total addressable(TAM)opportunity as much larger, per the following graphic.\n(source: Upstart)\nFor perspective, Upstart currently focuses on unsecured personal loans (such as credit card consolidation, home improvement loans, medical loans, wedding loans and moving loans) with sizes ranging between $1,000 and $50,000. And more recently has expanded into auto loans. However, there is a much larger market opportunity out there still, as Upstart continues to build out and improve its platform. Basically, Upstart has massive long-term growth opportunities, and the company is just getting started.\nLeadership\nWorth mentioning, Upstart was incorporated in 2012 (and became public in December of 2020), and it is run by co-founder and CEO,Dave Girouard. Dave was previously a big-wig at Google (GOOGL). He also worked at Apple (AAPL) and Booz Allen Hamilton. Having a founder-led business is another attractive quality of Upstart, in our view.\nThe company’s other co-founder,Paul Gu, runs Upstart’s Product and Data Science team. Again, we like founder-run businesses. Both Dave and Paul (along with other insiders) own a significant portion of the company’s business (i.e. we like to see skin in the game).\nValuing Upstart\nOne of the first things that investors notice about Upstart is the extraordinarily rapid ascent of the share price in recent months, especially sinceannouncingearnings last month (whereby the company beat earnings and revenue expectations, and significantly raised forward guidance).\n(source: YCharts)\nBut rather than looking simply at the share price, it is important to consider price in relation to other fundamental metrics, such as revenue and future growth expectations. For example, here is a look at Upstart's price-to-sales and forward price-to-sales metrics since going public.\n(source: YCharts)\nImportantly, you'll notice the wide gap between current P/S and forward P/S; this is a result of the high growth expectation/guidance from the company. For perspective, 24.4x forward sales is expensive relative to most publicly traded companies, but most publicly traded companies do not have anywhere near the high growth trajectory of Upstart (and 24.4x isn't really that high as compared to other companies with high sales growth trajectories and large TAMs).\nFurther, Upstart's growth is attractive because the margins are strong and the company is already profitable (many high growth companies have negative net income while they focus on growth).\n(source: StockRover)\nOverall, it is impossible to assign a precise valuation to Upstart (because the future is unknown), however it is not impossible to see the high growth trajectory, the large TAM, the attractive business model, and the potential for these shares to go dramatically higher still in the long-term.\nRisks\nVolatility Risk: No one knows where the stock market will be tomorrow or next month, but over the long-term it is likely going higher and Upstart is likely going higher at a dramatically higher rate considering its leadership position and the opportunities (TAM) that are ahead. However, the shares could go dramatically lower before going higher. For example, as the company notes in its most recent10Q:\n\n\"Our quarterly results are likely to fluctuate and as a result may adversely affect the trading price of our common stock.\"\n\nTechnically speaking, for the long-term investor, volatility is not a risk (it's often just the price of admission). And if you have the stomach to buy and hang-on, five years down the road there is a good chance you will be extremely happy you did.\nConcentration Risk:Credit Karma accounts for almost 1/2 of all loan origination so far in 2021.
This is the reality,” McConnell said on the Senate floor last week.
\n
Democratic lawmakers, for their part, have called for the move to raise the debt limit be bipartisan to prevent the government from defaulting on its obligations. The Treasury Department has warned that the U.S. could default on its debts as soon as October in absence of congressional action.
\n
\"The U.S. has always paid its bills on time, but the overwhelming consensus among economists and Treasury officials of both parties is that failing to raise the debt limit would produce widespread economic catastrophe,\" Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen wrote in an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal last week.
\n
Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell also warned of the consequences of a failure to raise the debt ceiling during his post-FOMC meeting press conference last week.
\n
\"It's just very important that the debt ceiling be raised in a timely fashion so that the United States can pay its bills when and as they come due. That's a critically important thing,\" he said. \"The failure to do that is something that could result in severe reactions, severe damage to the economy and to the financial markets ... no one should assume that the Fed or anyone else can protect the markets or the economy in the event of a failure.\"
\n
A dead Elm tree is removed on the West Front of the Capitol in Washington, Friday, Sept. 10, 2021. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)ASSOCIATED PRESS
\n
Amid the standoff, the Office of Management and Budget began warning federal agencies last week to prepare for a potential government shutdown.
\n
\n

Monday: Durable goods orders, August preliminary (0.6% expected, -0.1% in July); Elsewhere, economic data on consumer confidence is also due for release.\nThe Senate is expected to vote Monday on a procedural motion over the legislation passed by the House of Representatives last week. That bill included a plan to temporarily fund the government through early December, and came alongside a measure to raise the government debt ceiling through December 2022.\nThe latter point has been an area of contention for Senate Republicans, who are only narrowly outnumbered by Democratic lawmakers in both chambers and who have threatened to block the bill in its current form.\nSenate Republicans including Minority Leader Mitch McConnell have suggested that Democratic lawmakers should use the budget reconciliation process to raise the debt ceiling without Republican support. McConnell has, however, supported a short-term government funding bill that excludes a debt ceiling suspension.\n\"If they [the Democrats] want to tax, borrow and spend historic sums of money without our input, they’ll have to raise the debt limit without our help. This is the reality,” McConnell said on the Senate floor last week.\nDemocratic lawmakers, for their part, have called for the move to raise the debt limit be bipartisan to prevent the government from defaulting on its obligations. The Treasury Department has warned that the U.S. could default on its debts as soon as October in absence of congressional action.\n\"The U.S. has always paid its bills on time, but the overwhelming consensus among economists and Treasury officials of both parties is that failing to raise the debt limit would produce widespread economic catastrophe,\" Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen wrote in an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal last week.\nFederal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell also warned of the consequences of a failure to raise the debt ceiling during his post-FOMC meeting press conference last week.\n\"It's just very important that the debt ceiling be raised in a timely fashion so that the United States can pay its bills when and as they come due. That's a critically important thing,\" he said. \"The failure to do that is something that could result in severe reactions, severe damage to the economy and to the financial markets ... no one should assume that the Fed or anyone else can protect the markets or the economy in the event of a failure.\"\nA dead Elm tree is removed on the West Front of the Capitol in Washington, Friday, Sept. 10, 2021. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)ASSOCIATED PRESS\nAmid the standoff, the Office of Management and Budget began warning federal agencies last week to prepare for a potential government shutdown. The reminder served as a standard warning one week out from Congress's deadline to reach an agreement to at least temporarily continue funding the government.\nThough leaders of both political parties have agreed that a continuing resolution to avoid the shutdown at the end of the month is needed, the ongoing tension over raising the debt limit has served as a potential roadblock in this effort.\n\"We still expect Congress to avert a partial government shutdown at the start of October. Republicans won’t vote for the current continuing resolution being touted by the Democratic leadership, which also includes a new debt ceiling suspension,\" wrote Paul Ashworth, chief North America economist for Capital Economics, in a note Friday. \"But we expect a Plan B to emerge next week with the latter stripped out, which Republicans will support.\"\n\"The bigger issue is that there doesn’t appear to be an easy path to raising the debt ceiling by mid-October, which is when estimates suggest the Treasury’s will exhaust the 'extraordinary measures it is currently using to keep the lights on,\" he added.\nInvestors have also grown jittery as the debates wore on, with stocks posting their worst day since May last week amid a confluence of concerns that also included debt concerns with China Evergrande.\nMany strategists, however, have suggested market participants need not be overly concerned about the impacts of a potential government shutdown.\n\"Historically, we've seen that government shutdowns tend to be short-lived,\" Jordan Jackson, JPMorgan Asset Management global market strategist, told Yahoo Finance Live on Friday. \"We also know that for those non-essential federal employees, they do get furlough pay as well.\"\n\"If it lasts more than 30 days, it's certainly going to have a bigger impact on the economy. But generally speaking, these shutdowns tend to be short-lived and markets — while they may correct in the short-term — they do sort of continue to grind higher,\" he added. \"I think it's certainly a risk in terms of a short-term mini correction there. But again, with all the liquidity out there, I think any sort of blip in the markets will be short-lived.\"\nHistorical equity performance during and immediately following a government shutdown has also tended to point to a muted market impact.\n\"In the 14 government shutdowns since 1980, the S&P 500 generated median returns of -0.1% on the dates of budget authority expiration, 0.1% during the shutdown periods, and 0.3% on the dates of resolution,\" David Kostin, Goldman Sachs chief equity strategist, wrote in a note published on Sept. 21.\n\"One notable exception was the most recent federal shutdown in December 2018, when the S&P 500 fell 2% on the spending authority expiration date,\" he added. \"However, this decline was likely driven primarily by investor concerns about Fed tightening.\"\nKostin also noted that the typical government shutdown since 1980 has only lasted three days before ultimately being resolved. More recent shutdowns have lasted several times longer, however, with the duration of the four most recent federal shutdowns averaging 18 days, Kostin said.\nConsumer confidence\nOn the economic data front, one of the most closely watched new pieces of data will be on consumer confidence.\nThe Conference Board is set to release its September consumer confidence index Tuesday morning. However, the categories posting the biggest declines were areas like e-commerce shops and grocery stores, suggesting consumer behavior was shifting back toward stay-in-place trends and away from in-person events like restaurant dining amid the latest wave of the coronavirus.\nEconomic calendar\n\nMonday: Durable goods orders, August preliminary (0.6% expected, -0.1% in July); Durable goods excluding transportation, August preliminary (0.5% expected, 0.8% in July); Non-defense capital goods orders excluding aircraft, August preliminary (0.3% expected, 0.1% in July); Non-defense capital goods orders excluding aircraft, August preliminary (0.9% in July); Dallas Fed Manufacturing Activity Index, September (11.0 expected, 9.0 in July)\nTuesday: Advance goods trade balance, August (-$87.0 billion expected, -$86.4 billion in July); Wholesale inventories, month-over-month, August preliminary (0.6% in July); Retail inventories, month-over-month, August (0.4% in July); FHFA House Price Index, month-over-month, July (1.5% expected, 1.6% in July); S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller 20-City Composite Index, month-over-month, July (1.62% expected, 1.77% in June); S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller 20-City Composite Index, month-over-month, July (20.1% expected, 19.08% in June); Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index, September (114.2 expected, 113.8 in August); Richmond Fed Manufacturing Index, September (9 in August)\nWednesday: MBA Mortgage Applications, week ended September 24 (4.9% during prior month); Pending home sales, month-over-month, August (1.0% expected, -1.8% in July)\nThursday: Initial jobless claims, week ended September 25 (320,000 expected, 351,000 during prior week); Continuing claims, week ended September 18 (2.845 million during prior week); GDP annualized, quarter-over-quarter, second-quarter third estimate (6.7% expected, 6.6% in prior estimate); Personal consumption, second-quarter third estimate (11.9% in prior estimate); Core personal consumption expenditures, second quarter third estimate (6.1% in prior estimate); MNI Chicago PMI, September (65.0 expected, 66.8 in August)\nFriday: Personal income, August (0.2% expected, 1.1% in July); Personal spending, August (0.7% expected, 0.3% in July); Personal consumption expenditures core deflator, month-over-over, August (0.2% expected, 0.3% in July); Personal consumption expenditures core deflator, year-over-year, August (3.6% expected, 3.6% in July); Markit manufacturing PMI, September final (60.5 in prior estimate); Construction spending, month-over-month, August (0.3% expected, 0.3% in July); University of Michigan sentiment, September final (71.0 expected, 71.0 in prior print); ISM Manufacturing, September (59.5 expected, 59.9 in August)\n\nEarnings calendar\n\nMonday: Aurora Cannabis (ACB) after market close\nTuesday: Micron Technology (MU) after market close.\nWednesday: No notable reports scheduled for release\nThursday: CarMax (KMX), Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY) before market open; Jefferies (JEF) after market close\nFriday: No notable reports scheduled for releas","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":97,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":840085953,"gmtCreate":1635568564236,"gmtModify":1635568564313,"author":{"id":"3555557009386362","authorId":"3555557009386362","authorIdStr":"3555557009386362","name":"2c3154a7","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3555557009386362"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Like","listText":"Like","text":"Like","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/840085953","repostId":"2179424781","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2179424781","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Reuters.com brings you the latest news from around the world, covering breaking news in markets, business, politics, entertainment and technology","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Reuters","id":"1036604489","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/443ce19704621c837795676028cec868"},"pubTimestamp":1635538990,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/2179424781?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-10-30 04:23","market":"hk","language":"en","title":"Wall Street shakes off Amazon, Apple weakness to end modestly higher","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2179424781","media":"Reuters","summary":"* $Apple$, Amazon fall on dismal holiday-quarter forecast. * $Microsoft$ tops Apple as the most valuable U.S. public company. However, following its second-quarter 2021 results, the newly minted public company saw its shares decline. On Friday, Sept. 17, the company's stock experienced a more than 7% one-day plunge in value. This, combined with the fact it was the third-most-mentioned stock on the WallStreetBets Reddit subforum at the time of its IPO, has led to speculation it could become a \"meme stock\" -- but is such a possibility realistic? Important factors seem to weigh against it.
\n
Krispy Kreme is doing OK, but not leading the market
\n
After its initial jump, traders appear to think Krispy shares are somewhat overheated and should be trading at a more modest level. Its Q2 earnings report shows revenue climbing approximately 43% year over year to $349.2 million. Even this gain, of course, is mostly a rebound from the lockdowns and closures of 2020's COVID-19 response. It boosted its worldwide \"points of access\" about 15.7% year over year. However, at the bottom line, its net loss increased about $3.3 million compared to the same quarter last year, and adjusted loss per share went from a $0.10 loss in Q2 2020 to a $0.13 loss in Q2 2021.
\n

\n
\n
The enterprise's business model, selling half-dozen or dozen packages of doughnuts, doesn't have the same everyday or multiple-times-daily customer sales generation coffee chains enjoy. On the positive side, e-commerce has increased, now accounting for 19% of sales around the world. Some analysts are also throwing their support behind the doughnut chain, notably Morgan Stanley. The firm rates Krispy Kreme as overweight with a $23 price target, citing the company's market opportunities both in the U.S. and overseas, along with evidence of growth shown by its Q2 results, to support its bull case.
\n
Another potentially worrisome facet of the company is its debt. Its $1.63 billion in debt dwarfs its $71.6 million operating cash flow and its $38.1 million cash reserves. Its debt has more than doubled since the start of the year, and the current portion of its long-term debt has exploded 1,212% over the same time frame. Its operating margin for the trailing 12 months is just under 2.3%, while the margins for its United States and Canadian operations -- its most important regions -- actually dropped in Q2. The margins of its Insomnia Cookies subsidiary increased, but this brand accounts for only 200 out of Krispy's approximately 9,600 points of access, so margin growth here is not particularly significant at this time.
\n
While Krispy Kreme seems likely to continue growing, there is nothing in its situation to suggest it will outperform the market anytime soon, either. It has growth opportunities and seems to be executing competently to further them. But it also has a large amount of debt, low margins, and relatively few locations compared to other quick-service restaurants, and a product focus with possibly less continuous demand than coffee.
\n
Krispy Meme? Not likely
\n
While Krispy Kreme was unable to support its initial princely valuation, it seems highly unlikely to become a meme stock in the same way that GameStop and AMC Entertainment have. Its performance may not justify a high share price, but it is also not sliding toward bankruptcy due to an obsolete business model. It could even start making modest gains once the market finds an acceptable price for its shares.
\n
Because it is successful within its niche, despite being possibly temporarily overvalued, short-sellers aren't flocking to it in expectation of steadily worsening news. Even with options already available after its IPO, short interest as percentage of float is hovering around 3%. GameStop's short interest is around 12.4%, while around 18.7% of AMC shares are shorted. Without double-digit short interest, it seems improbable WallStreetBets' army of retail investor \"apes\" will bid Krispy Kreme's shares up.
\n
On the flip side, while Krispy Kreme isn't bearish enough for shorts or \"apes,\" it also doesn't seem bullish enough for other investors. With many other choices available, its performance is too humdrum to merit much attention. Even another IPO in the same sector, Dutch Bros. Coffee (NYSE: BROS), appears more energetic; its shares are up more than 100% since its IPO.
\n
When choosing among newly public restaurant stocks, Dutch Bros. likely comes out ahead of Krispy Kreme, with vigorous expansion plans, a significant company loyalty program, and alignment with the growing coffee market in its favor.
\n
Here, too, investor caution is merited, with the company potentially seeing a post-IPO share price spike unsustainable over the longer term. With a smorgasbord of stock picks in today's market, Dutch Bros. looks moderately bullish for a start-up, and Krispy Kreme is likely overvalued, while many other companies are potentially better bets than either -- at least under current circumstances.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":35,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":861944045,"gmtCreate":1632451835687,"gmtModify":1632722295792,"author":{"id":"3555557009386362","authorId":"3555557009386362","authorIdStr":"3555557009386362","name":"2c3154a7","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3555557009386362"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Like","listText":"Like","text":"Like","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/861944045","repostId":"2169695404","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2169695404","pubTimestamp":1632451322,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/2169695404?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-09-24 10:42","market":"us","language":"en","title":"What's Going On With Palantir Stock Today?","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2169695404","media":"Benzinga","summary":"Palantir Technologies (NYSE: PLTR) is trading higher Thursday amid overall market strength as well a","content":"
Palantir Technologies (NYSE: PLTR) is trading higher Thursday amid overall market strength as well as continued attention on the WallStreetBets forum.
\n
Trading volume was nearing 34 million at publication time, pacing pretty close to its daily average of about 45 million.
\n
Palantir recently broke through strong resistance near the $27.50 level and has seen continued momentum since.
\n
Related Link: Palantir Busts Through Heavy Resistance, Options Trader Hammer Calls
\n
Palantir is among the top 10 most mentioned stocks on the subreddit r/wallstreetbets over the last 24 hours.
