But it may not be as bad this time.</p>\n<p>Fund managers cited a taper tantrum as the second-biggest risk after inflation in a recent survey by Bank of America. Emerging markets felt the brunt of the last taper tantrum, with the MSCI Emerging Markets index falling roughly 10% in four months as investors yanked money out as higher yields in the U.S. offered them alternatives in 2013. That added pressure to emerging market countries, exacerbating precarious fiscal positions in countries reliant on foreign funding.</p>\n<p>Many emerging market countries have better fiscal positions and stronger reserves to deal this time to deal with the fallout from another Fed taper. Increased demand for commodities should also help insulate non-Asian markets from disruptive outflows, giving policy makers more room to maneuver, according to Gavkeal Research analysts Udith Sikand and Vincent Tsui.</p>\n<p>The duo expects a less extreme reaction in emerging markets, writing in a note this month that the Fed may also be more attuned to the fragility of the global backdrop and careful to avoid sparking a panic.</p>\n<p>Plus, U.S. real yields are already inching up, which could mean any further rise in yields on the back of a Fed tapering could be smaller. As a result, the analysts think several emerging markets could be less vulnerable this time around and even outperform.</p>\n<p>Of course, if a Fed taper triggers the type of outflows seen last time from emerging markets—roughly $30 billion—there will be few places to hide. The growth outlook for emerging markets, especially outside of India and China, is also less exciting and many countries will likely be grappling with higher levels of debt post-Covid. And the most fiscally fragile could still be vulnerable (think Turkey and South Africa).</p>\n<p>But some money managers see pockets of opportunity in emerging markets. While 2013 is still fresh in the minds of emerging market investors, not all instances of Fed tightening have created such painful periods. Between 2004 to 2006, the MSCI Emerging Markets index returned more than 80% as the Federal Reserve raised the fed-funds rate by 4.25 percentage points, analysts at RockCreek wrote in a note to clients this week. A strong economic recovery led to the tightening in 2004—a period where emerging markets also saw the benefits of a strong commodities market. The RockCreek team highlighted similarities to that period: Commodities are&nbsp;booming again&nbsp;and the U.S. is in the throes of an economic recovery.</p>\n<p>Picking the right spots in emerging markets will be important, as some countries are better-positioned for stronger commodity demand and to withstand volatility from a Fed taper. Others, like China are still&nbsp;grappling with country-specific issues,like antimonopoly measures that loom over not just the e-commerce and internet sectors but also education.</p>\n<p>Oxford Economics strategists favor commodity-oriented beneficiaries in emerging markets in Brazil, for example, where valuations are less stretched than in “new-economy” areas of the market like Chinese technology stocks.</p>\n<p>Some emerging markets managers are also looking to banks in&nbsp;countries like Brazil&nbsp;as a way to benefit from the commodities boom and broader recovery. JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co.</h2>\n<p><b>Dividend yield: 2.2%</b></p>\n<p><b>JPMorgan Chase</b>'s (NYSE:JPM) current yield of 2.2% is healthy, but it's hardly head-turning. Income-seeking investors could certainly find names with bigger payouts right now.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f7177164a17e3f0ea9b7f34f50305791\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<p>But there's an important detail that's not evident in the yield alone. That's the rate at which the company <i>raises</i> its dividend. Over the course of the past 10 years, JPMorgan's quarterly payout has improved from $0.25 to $0.90 per share, growing at an annualized clip of 13.7%. That's huge.</p>\n<p>Be aware that this diversified banking and finance name trimmed its dividend pretty significantly in the wake of the subprime mortgage meltdown, and could certainly do so again should the company find itself in similar circumstances. After all, about half of its revenue is ultimately linked to interest rates.</p>\n<p>Even with inflationary pressures rising, however, a recreation of those unusual underpinnings isn't very likely. Then, interest rates were peeling back from above-average highs, sapping loan margins in addition to piling on costs linked to soured loans. Now, conversely, rates are hovering near record lows and poised to rise in a way that actually makes lending more profitable. A recession curbs the demand for loans, but shouldn't outright kill that demand unless economic weakness turns downright cataclysmic. In the meantime, the other half of JPMorgan's business comes from things like asset management, credit cards, investment banking, and even consumer banking. These businesses are pretty resilient even if they don't exactly thrive in a lethargic environment.</p>\n<h2>2. Hewlett Packard Enterprise</h2>\n<p><b>Dividend yield: 3.1%</b></p>\n<p>Would it surprise you to know that technology company <b>Hewlett Packard Enterprise</b> (NYSE:HPE) is a dividend stock? And while we don't know what the future holds, it certainly seems as if several growth-first companies have become a bit riskier as investments than they were just a few months back.\nWith this in mind, here's a rundown of three great all-weather dividend stocks that should be able to push through whatever economic headwind awaits on the horizon. In no particular order...\n1. JPMorgan Chase & Co.\nDividend yield: 2.2%\nJPMorgan Chase's (NYSE:JPM) current yield of 2.2% is healthy, but it's hardly head-turning. That's the rate at which the company raises its dividend. Over the course of the past 10 years, JPMorgan's quarterly payout has improved from $0.25 to $0.90 per share, growing at an annualized clip of 13.7%.
