I'm wondering: Why could it NOT be that the shorts had ALREADY covered well before that price rise to $450 ? If you are short at $20, how much of a rise can you really hold through ?

That is not something you would like to believe, but that is the most likely scenario : That shorts had already covered well before $450, and the FOMO crowd was still chasing it up in hopes of $1000, $10000 etc.. !!!

In that case, the temporary halt of buying actually saved more people from bigger losses.
