markets plunged, after scientists detected a new COVID variant in South Africa that could be to blame for a recent sharp surge in cases, especially in Europe.
\n
U.S. markets were closed for Thanksgiving on Thursday and ended at 1 p.m. Eastern Time on Friday, three hours earlier than usual, and bond market trading ends at 2 p.m., an hour earlier than is typical.
\n
How are The Nasdaq Composite Index rose 0.4% to 15,84.23.
\n
What's driving the market?
\n
It was an ugly day for stock investors during a thinly traded Black Friday session, which was susceptible to big swings on alarming news from public health officials who were assessing a new variant of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19.
\n
Late in the session, the World Health Organization's technical advisory group assigned the B. 1.1.529 variant of the virus the Greek letter omicron and declared it a \"variant of concern,\" as it did with the delta variant.
\n
Fear of a new variant overshadowed the usual focus on U.S. Black Friday shopping day, which puts the focus on retailers as consumers shop for bargains.
\n
Particularly notable about the variant is the \"large number of mutations, some of which are concerning,\" the WHO group said in a statement. The Merck news triggered an across-the-board sell-off in vaccine stocks at that time.
\n
These two companies with deep pockets and marketing expertise are vying for a piece of the COVID-19 treatment market, making the competitive landscape all the more interesting.
\n
Pfizer Vs. Merck Data Comparison:As opposed the 89% reduction in risk of hospitalization or death reported by Pfizer for Paxlovid, an interim analysis of Merck's Phase 3 data released on Oct. 1 showed molnupiravir reducing the risk of hospitalization or death by approximately 50%.
\n
Only about 0.8% of patients who received Paxlovid were hospitalized through day 28 compared to 7% of patients who received placebo and were hospitalized or died.
\n
Similar reductions in COVID-19-related hospitalization or death were observed in patients treated within five days of symptom onset.
\n
Merck reported that 7.3% of patients who received molnupiravir were either hospitalized or died through day 29 compared with 14.1% of placebo-treated patients.
\n
Through day 28, no deaths were reported in patients who received Paxlovid as compared to 10 deaths in patients who received placebo. With Merck, through day 29, no deaths were reported in patients who received molnupiravir, as compared to eight deaths in patients who received placebo.
\n
Not only is Pfizer's drug safe, but the level of efficacy is so high that it will very meaningfully shake up the COVID landscape looking to next year— including the outlook for boosters, BofA Securities analyst Geoff Meacham said in a note.
\n
\"Between Roche Holding AG's recent failure and Merck's decent efficacy, Pfizer's drug will be the clear best-in-class oral, and well positioned to capitalize on the longer term C-19 treatment market that could be in the mid-to-high billions next year,\" Meacham said.
\n
Authorization Before Year-End?At the recommendation of an independent Data Monitoring Committee and in consultation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Pfizer will cease further enrollment into the study due to the overwhelming efficacy demonstrated in these results, the company said.
\n
It plans to submit the data as part of its ongoing rolling submission to the authorization as soon as possible.
\n
BofA expects the application to be soon submitted to the FDA, with an authorization likely by the end of the year.
\n
Meanwhile, Merck announced Thursday it has received the first authorization for molnupiravir in the U.K., with the drug to be marketed under the brand name Lagevrio.
\n
Its application with the FDA is under review. The European Medicines Agency has recently initiated a rolling review of its Marketing Authorization Application. Merck also said it is actively working to submit applications to other regulatory agencies around the world.
\n
The commercial outlook could dramatically shift in favor of Pfizer's pill given how much more impressive the data is, BofA said. Merck's revenue guidance of $5 billion to $7 billion through 2022 provided on its third-quarter call last week could be reduced meaningfully, the firm added.
\n
Meanwhile, Gilead, Inc.'s antiviral remdesivir could remain an option for hospitalized patients, but overall its use is likely to further diminish, in BofA's view.
\n

","source":"lsy1606299360108","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; The Merck news triggered an across-the-board sell-off in vaccine stocks at that time.\nThese two companies with deep pockets and marketing expertise are vying for a piece of the COVID-19 treatment market, making the competitive landscape all the more interesting.\nPfizer Vs. Merck Data Comparison:As opposed the 89% reduction in risk of hospitalization or death reported by Pfizer for Paxlovid, an interim analysis of Merck's Phase 3 data released on Oct. 1 showed molnupiravir reducing the risk of hospitalization or death by approximately 50%.\nOnly about 0.8% of patients who received Paxlovid were hospitalized through day 28 compared to 7% of patients who received placebo and were hospitalized or died.\nSimilar reductions in COVID-19-related hospitalization or death were observed in patients treated within five days of symptom onset.\nMerck reported that 7.3% of patients who received molnupiravir were either hospitalized or died through day 29 compared with 14.1% of placebo-treated patients.\nThrough day 28, no deaths were reported in patients who received Paxlovid as compared to 10 deaths in patients who received placebo. With Merck, through day 29, no deaths were reported in patients who received molnupiravir, as compared to eight deaths in patients who received placebo.\nNot only is Pfizer's drug safe, but the level of efficacy is so high that it will very meaningfully shake up the COVID landscape looking to next year— including the outlook for boosters, BofA Securities analyst Geoff Meacham said in a note.\n\"Between Roche Holding AG's recent failure and Merck's decent efficacy, Pfizer's drug will be the clear best-in-class oral, and well positioned to capitalize on the longer term C-19 treatment market that could be in the mid-to-high billions next year,\" Meacham said.\nAuthorization Before Year-End?At the recommendation of an independent Data Monitoring Committee and in consultation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Pfizer will cease further enrollment into the study due to the overwhelming efficacy demonstrated in these results, the company said.\nIt plans to submit the data as part of its ongoing rolling submission to the authorization as soon as possible.\nBofA expects the application to be soon submitted to the FDA, with an authorization likely by the end of the year.\nMeanwhile, Merck announced Thursday it has received the first authorization for molnupiravir in the U.K., with the drug to be marketed under the brand name Lagevrio.\nIts application with the FDA is under review. The European Medicines Agency has recently initiated a rolling review of its Marketing Authorization Application. Merck also said it is actively working to submit applications to other regulatory agencies around the world.\nThe commercial outlook could dramatically shift in favor of Pfizer's pill given how much more impressive the data is, BofA said. Merck's revenue guidance of $5 billion to $7 billion through 2022 provided on its third-quarter call last week could be reduced meaningfully, the firm added.\nMeanwhile, Gilead, Inc.'s antiviral remdesivir could remain an option for hospitalized patients, but overall its use is likely to further diminish, in BofA's view.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":244,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":846603477,"gmtCreate":1636075706718,"gmtModify":1636075706888,"author":{"id":"4096938196974520","authorId":"4096938196974520","name":"Potatohead","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/af58cbfb41401d988882a0ddee3c9f27","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4096938196974520","authorIdStr":"4096938196974520"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"<a The Merck news triggered an across-the-board sell-off in vaccine stocks at that time.

Merck's revenue guidance of $5 billion to $7 billion through 2022 provided on its third-quarter call last week could be reduced meaningfully, the firm added.\nMeanwhile, Gilead, Inc.'s antiviral remdesivir could remain an option for hospitalized patients, but overall its use is likely to further diminish, in BofA's view.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":244,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":846600208,"gmtCreate":1636075620374,"gmtModify":1636079579370,"author":{"id":"4096938196974520","authorId":"4096938196974520","name":"Potatohead","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/af58cbfb41401d988882a0ddee3c9f27","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"4096938196974520","idStr":"4096938196974520"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Big regret not buying DBS at the peak of COVID!","listText":"Big regret not buying DBS at the peak of COVID!","text":"Big regret not buying DBS at the peak of COVID!","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":2,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/846600208","repostId":"1155962755","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":540,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":878200911,"gmtCreate":1637193848300,"gmtModify":1637193848300,"author":{"id":"4096938196974520","authorId":"4096938196974520","name":"Potatohead","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/af58cbfb41401d988882a0ddee3c9f27","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"4096938196974520","idStr":"4096938196974520"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"[Smile] ","listText":"[Smile] ","text":"[Smile]","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/878200911","repostId":"2184510828","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2184510828","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Reuters.com brings you the latest news from around the world, covering breaking news in markets, business, politics, entertainment and technology","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Reuters","id":"1036604489","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/443ce19704621c837795676028cec868"},"pubTimestamp":1637190577,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/2184510828?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-11-18 07:09","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Wall Street ends lower as retailers stoke inflation fears","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2184510828","media":"Reuters","summary":" - Wall Street benchmarks ended Wednesday lower on inflation fears and supply chain concerns stemming from retailers' earnings, with investors betting the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates sooner than expected to tame rising prices.$Target Corp$ was the latest big-name retailer to report positive results, upping its annual forecasts and beating profit expectations, citing an early start to holiday shopping. But shares of the firm fell 4.7%, tracking declines in those of peer $Walmart$ on ","content":"
(Reuters) - Wall Street benchmarks ended Wednesday lower on inflation fears and supply chain concerns stemming from retailers' earnings, with investors betting the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates sooner than expected to tame rising prices.
\n
Target Corp was the latest big-name retailer to report positive results, upping its annual forecasts and beating profit expectations, citing an early start to holiday shopping.
\n
But shares of the firm fell 4.7%, tracking declines in those of peer Walmart on Tuesday, as both retailers flagged a hit to their third-quarter margins from supply chain issues.read more
\n
Other retailers yet to report earnings traded lower. Macy's Inc and Kohls Corp(KSS.N)dropped 4.5% and 3.1% respectively, ahead of posting numbers on Thursday morning, and Gap Inc and Urban Outfitters Inc(URBN.O), on deck next week, slipped 5.2% and 4.2%.
\n
Some retailers bucked the trend.
