That's pretty much how investors need to think about buying stock in machine vision company <b>Cognex Corporation</b> (NASDAQ:CGNX) and industrial software stock <b>PTC</b> (NASDAQ:PTC).</p>\n<p>It's not just that these stocks are likely to recover from some problematic conditions. Many of the issues causing the problems (supply chain difficulties and logistics) will encourage companies to adopt solutions from these companies.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://g.foolcdn.com/image/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fg.foolcdn.com%2Feditorial%2Fimages%2F646336%2Fbuy-stock.jpg&amp;w=700&amp;op=resize\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"554\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>Near-term problems, long-term opportunity</h2>\n<p>It's no secret that the industrial sector is in the middle of a difficult period. Raw material prices have risen more than most people expected going into the third quarter. In addition, supply chain difficulties have created difficulties in obtaining crucial products, and logistics issues continue to plague the sector.</p>\n<p>It gets worse. Companies like <b>FedEx</b> (NYSE:FDX) have already warned of severe labor shortages caused by the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. FedEx took a $450 million hit due to these issues. Management discussed workers having safety issues and the difficulty of hiring workers who don't have child care access when daycare centers and schools are closed.</p>\n<p>It's likely to hold back some near-term investment as companies are busy fighting rising costs and logistics issues.</p>\n<p>History suggests that when business leaders receive a shock, they start to make long-term plans to guard against the risk of it happening again. As such, it's reasonable to expect investment in automation and digitization to accelerate.</p>\n<h2>Cognex's machine vision</h2>\n<p>Cognex makes machine vision systems and barcode readers used in automated factory production and logistics. Traditionally its key end markets are automotive (car makers are usually early adopters of automation) and consumer electronics (its largest customer in recent years is <b>Apple</b>). It also has a fast-growing and highly profitable logistics business (scanning and tracking orders, often used in e-fulfillment centers).</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://g.foolcdn.com/image/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fg.foolcdn.com%2Feditorial%2Fimages%2F646336%2Fe-commerce-packages.jpg&amp;w=700&amp;op=resize\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<p>Cognex certainly faces some near-term headwinds, not least due to automotive customers cutting back production plans due to semiconductor shortages and the supply chain issues that companies face worldwide.</p>\n<p>Meanwhile, CEO Rob Willett said on the second-quarter earnings call in August, \"We continue to believe revenue from consumer electronics for 2021 will be modestly below the level we recorded last year\" due to \"lower levels of investment in smartphone manufacturing and in devices needed for online learning.\"</p>\n<p>However, given the problems with keeping plants open during the COVID-19 pandemic, it's highly likely that automakers and consumer electronics companies will invest in more automated processes when conditions normalize. Similarly, Cognex's solutions make logistics operations more efficient, and they also imply less human participation.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://g.foolcdn.com/image/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fg.foolcdn.com%2Feditorial%2Fimages%2F646336%2Fauto-production.jpg&amp;w=700&amp;op=resize\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<p>In the end, the key factor in Cognex's long-term growth will be an increase in the rate of adoption of machine vision. That's something likely to increase after the current difficult period is worked through. There's no slowing of the long-term need for investment in e-fulfillment centers, production lines for electric vehicles, and the process of aligning layers of screens on consumer devices using machine vision.</p>\n<h2>PTC and the fourth industrial revolution</h2>\n<p>It's been a somewhat frustrating year for shareholders in industrial software company PTC. This was supposed to be the year when customers started to significantly adopt its growth product group solutions (Internet of Things and augmented reality). However, for reference, PTC's core products (computer-aided design and product lifecycle management) are performing pretty much as expected.</p>\n<p>Discussing the growth products group performance, CEO Jim Heppelmann said he believes that customers are conservative around committing investment on IoT \"in factories and in general as they come back to speed following COVID.\" Given the supply chain issues many factories face right now, PTC could see the conservatism extend into the second half of 2021.</p>\n<p>That said, just as with Cognex, it's highly likely that companies will be more willing to invest in digitizing their factories when conditions normalize. IoT connects physical assets to the digital world to generate actionable insights to improve performance. Meanwhile, AR allows the servicing of equipment without a technician being physically present. In addition, AR digitally enhances the ability of a technician to quickly service equipment.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2230902e50c7b6b2f283790d8fe0a203\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<p>PTC's core product group is likely to grow as its computer-aided design and product lifecycle management solutions are increasingly adopted as a software-as-a-service option rather than an on-premise option. That's something likely to increase in the post-pandemic world as workers are more used to working remotely and desire to access their work through various devices.</p>\n<h2>Stocks to buy?</h2>\n<p>Both stocks are attractive, but near-term conditions for both companies' customers are complicated, and it's impossible to predict when they will start to improve. As a result, the upcoming earnings season will undoubtedly contain a host of companies giving profit warnings. Given “they have huge power in terms of their ability to source semiconductors as such a key customer, then everyone else will be having greater issues than they are.”</p>\n<p>Apple’s scaleback is a clear sign that the supply disruptions that have wreaked havoc around the world are worsening, which may jeopardize the outlook for the post-pandemic economic recovery. Almost all major manufacturers have been impacted both by a lack of key materials such as semiconductors, but also an inability to get finished goods into the hands of consumers.</p>\n<p>President Joe Biden&nbsp;is set to focus on transportation bottleneckson Wednesday, with the congested Port of Los Angeles planning a 24 hours a day, seven days a week effort to confront the squeeze on goods. A.P. Moller-Maersk A/S said it had to&nbsp;divert some ships&nbsp;from the U.K.’s largest container port because of congestion tied to a trucker shortage.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/00b2ca1b624d644ffd4f99c2be9f0ec7\" tg-width=\"956\" tg-height=\"562\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"></p>\n<p>“Recent rumblings from chip producers suggest that the problems are expected to persist,”Deutsche Bank AG&nbsp;strategists including Jim Reid, global head of fundamental credit strategy wrote in a note. That “will make central bank decisions even more complicated over the coming weeks as they grapple with increasing supply-side constraints that push up inflation whilst threatening to undermine the recovery.”</p>\n<p>Apple had expected to produce 90 million new iPhone models this year, but is now telling manufacturing partners that the total will be lower because&nbsp;Broadcom Inc.andTexas Instruments Inc.are struggling to deliver enough components, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the situation is private.</p>\n<p>Japan Display Inc., which gets more than half of its revenue from Apple, fell as much as 5.6%, joining U.S. suppliers that fell in postmarket trading.</p>\n<p>The shortage of semiconductors stems mainly from years of under-investment coupled with a failure to gauge the explosion in demand for connected devices. Even industry insiders were caught by surprise.ASML Holding NVCEO Peter Wennink, whose company sells the machines that enable most cutting-edge chipmaking, said in July it’s&nbsp;underestimated&nbsp;the growth of the semiconductor industry over the past 15 years.</p>\n<p>The amount of time that companies need to wait for chip orders to get filled has set records for nine straight months, signaling that semiconductor shortages will continue to&nbsp;plague&nbsp;businesses well into 2022 and likely beyond.Alix&nbsp;Partners, a global consulting firm, estimated last month that the global automotive industry will lose about $210 billion in sales for 2021 alone.</p>\n<p>Earlier this year, Apple had already warned that it would face supply constraints of the iPhone and iPad during the quarter that ended September. In premarket trading Wednesday morning as of 8 a.m. EDT, futures on the <b>Dow Jones Industrial Average </b>(DJINDICES:^DJI) were down 326 points to 33,857. Futures on the <b>S&amp;P 500 </b>(SNPINDEX:^GSPC) dropped 48 points to 4,286, and <b>Nasdaq Composite </b>(NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC) futures fell 186 points to 14,470.</p>\n<p>Stock market volatility levels have been on the rise, and many investors are looking to protect themselves against further declines by looking to the options market. A key measure of volatility, the <b>CBOE Volatility Index </b>(VOLATILITYINDICES:^VIX), has seen a couple of its biggest spikes all year come in the last couple of weeks. That has some investors looking for ways to profit -- and this morning, they're turning to exchange-traded funds designed to try to track the VIX.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/22719786dce6b2278c6f4132a5bc86ff\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"467\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"></p>\n<p>Image source: Getty Images.</p>\n<h3>Volatility ETFs and the VIX</h3>\n<p>The ETF universe has found ways to invest in nearly anything, and volatility is no exception. Because there's no way to invest directly in movements in the VIX, volatility ETFs concentrate on VIX futures contracts.</p>\n<p>One relatively simple exchange-traded volatility product is <b>iPath Series B S&amp;P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures </b>(NYSEMKT:VXX). This security is designed to track the daily movements in the front month and second month VIX futures contracts. Given this morning's rise in anticipated volatility, shares of the iPath volatility product are up more than 4% in pre-market trading.</p>\n<p>A similar product is <b>ProShares VIX Short-Term Futures ETF </b>(NYSEMKT:VIXY). It uses a slightly different methodology in selecting futures contracts to achieve the same goal. It's also up nearly 4% as of 8 a.m. EDT Wednesday.</p>\n<p>Those investors seeking an even larger gain from rising volatility levels can use leveraged volatility ETFs. The <b>ProShares Ultra VIX Short-Term Futures ETF </b>(NYSEMKT:UVXY) offers moves that are 1.5 times the corresponding daily movement of various VIX futures contracts. That multiple has the ProShares fund up nearly 6% in the pre-market session Wednesday.</p>\n<h3>The dangers of volatility ETFs</h3>\n<p>Investing in volatility is dangerous. The first thing to keep in mind is that these products are all designed to tie to <i>daily </i>returns, and that makes them less than ideal for long-term investors. For instance, looking at the iPath's history, it lost money every single year from 2009 to 2017, eked out a tiny positive return in 2018, lost two-thirds of its value in 2019, and climbed just 11% in 2020's turbulent stock market year. It's down more than 60% so far in 2021.</p>\n<p>However, the massive returns you can earn if you have perfect timing are tempting. From mid-February to mid-March in 2020, the iPath product jumped more than 320%. The ProShares Ultra volatility ETF gained nearly 700%. But you do have to have perfect timing on both ends -- by the end of April 2020, the funds had given back 50% to 60% of those gains. By the end of the year, the ProShares fund had actually dropped back to a net loss after its huge spike.</p>\n<p>Because of their big daily moves, volatility ETFs are attractive to short-term traders. For long-term investors, though, the better way to play volatility is to have cash on hand to buy attractive stocks when they're cheap after a downswing. Futures on the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC) dropped 48 points to 4,286, and Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC) futures fell 186 points to 14,470.\nStock market volatility levels have been on the rise, and many investors are looking to protect themselves against further declines by looking to the options market. A key measure of volatility, the CBOE Volatility Index (VOLATILITYINDICES:^VIX), has seen a couple of its biggest spikes all year come in the last couple of weeks. That has some investors looking for ways to profit -- and this morning, they're turning to exchange-traded funds designed to try to track the VIX.\n\nImage source: Getty Images.\nVolatility ETFs and the VIX\nThe ETF universe has found ways to invest in nearly anything, and volatility is no exception. Because there's no way to invest directly in movements in the VIX, volatility ETFs concentrate on VIX futures contracts.\nOne relatively simple exchange-traded volatility product is iPath Series B S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures (NYSEMKT:VXX). This security is designed to track the daily movements in the front month and second month VIX futures contracts. Given this morning's rise in anticipated volatility, shares of the iPath volatility product are up more than 4% in pre-market trading.\nA similar product is ProShares VIX Short-Term Futures ETF (NYSEMKT:VIXY). It uses a slightly different methodology in selecting futures contracts to achieve the same goal. It's also up nearly 4% as of 8 a.m. EDT Wednesday.\nThose investors seeking an even larger gain from rising volatility levels can use leveraged volatility ETFs. The ProShares Ultra VIX Short-Term Futures ETF (NYSEMKT:UVXY) offers moves that are 1.5 times the corresponding daily movement of various VIX futures contracts. That multiple has the ProShares fund up nearly 6% in the pre-market session Wednesday.\nThe dangers of volatility ETFs\nInvesting in volatility is dangerous. The first thing to keep in mind is that these products are all designed to tie to daily returns, and that makes them less than ideal for long-term investors. For instance, looking at the iPath's history, it lost money every single year from 2009 to 2017, eked out a tiny positive return in 2018, lost two-thirds of its value in 2019, and climbed just 11% in 2020's turbulent stock market year. It's down more than 60% so far in 2021.\nHowever, the massive returns you can earn if you have perfect timing are tempting. From mid-February to mid-March in 2020, the iPath product jumped more than 320%. The ProShares Ultra volatility ETF gained nearly 700%. But you do have to have perfect timing on both ends -- by the end of April 2020, the funds had given back 50% to 60% of those gains. By the end of the year, the ProShares fund had actually dropped back to a net loss after its huge spike.\nBecause of their big daily moves, volatility ETFs are attractive to short-term traders. However, even excluding more volatile food and energy prices, the CPI likely still rose at a 4.0% annual pace.</p>\n<p>The so-called core measure of CPI has moderated from June's 4.5% annual clip, or the fastest rate since 1991, but has still held markedly higher compared to pre-pandemic standards.
