Photographer: Bing Guan/Bloomberg</span></p>\n<p>Breakups are tough — even amicable&nbsp;ones. But a reassessment usually lays bare the issues that inform the future. So it’s worth wondering about the&nbsp;relationship between the century-old&nbsp;Ford Motor Co. and recently-floated electric vehicle company Rivian Automotive Inc.</p>\n<p>It was meant to work —&nbsp;on paper. A large, traditional manufacturer ties up with a new startup that boasts&nbsp;all the right technology and specs, to make an electric version of an American favorite —&nbsp;the SUV. They looked like&nbsp;the perfect couple.&nbsp;This month, though,the companies abandoned plans to jointly develop&nbsp;an EV.</p>\n<p>It’s a shame. Investors loved it. For Ford, it was a big, bold bet on the future at a time when it didn’t know much better and skittishness around the incessant rise of EV-maker Tesla Inc. made traditional carmakers splash out. They took&nbsp;big stakes in various futuristic technologies or forged&nbsp;partnerships that aligned them with the next-generation of vehicles and the&nbsp;technology that would power them. For Rivian, a hot startup with all the&nbsp;ideas à la&nbsp;mode around sustainability and greener vehicles, the partnership&nbsp;with a manufacturing giant would ensure that production issues didn’t impede its rise.</p>\n<p>Rivian went public on Nov. 10 in one of the biggest offerings ever. The value of Ford’s stake stands at around $12 billion. Just 10 days&nbsp;later,&nbsp;they called off jointly making an electric vehicle —&nbsp;mutually, they say.&nbsp;Ford still holds its 12%. Both companies seem to have come out fine, in theory. A subsidiary of the Detroit giant has a supply agreement with the EV-maker.</p>\n<p>But the making-a-car bit was the premise of the relationship. So what about those&nbsp;lofty goals set at the time&nbsp;of the initial investment led to it falling apart?&nbsp;In April 2019, after the announcement, when Ford’s then-Chief Executive Officer James Hackett was asked by an analyst how much his company thought it could save from its partnership versus “the $1 billion to $2 billion needed to bring a new vehicle to market,” he said: “We see significant opportunity” in terms of cost and speed to market, noting that the latter was important.</p>\n<p>He went on to say that the skateboard platform, Rivian’s chassis that packages together the systems, motor, batteries and other controls, had a lot of capability they could leverage. Rivian founder&nbsp;R.J. Scaringe noted that just as important as its 100,000 electric van-Amazon.com Inc. relationship&nbsp;was&nbsp;bringing in a partner “that has manufacturing expertise, supply chain expertise and the ability to actually use our skateboard.” They didn’t get into details but investors liked the idea.</p>\n<p>Just over two years later, the reality couldn’t be further from those&nbsp;optimistic statements. Ford is coming out with its own vehicles, as is Rivian,&nbsp;while&nbsp;it&nbsp;scouts out manufacturing plants in Georgia.</p>\n<p>Perhaps they just couldn’t see eye-to-eye on technology and manufacturing, and never would —&nbsp;their foundations are so different. Within a year of the tie-up, in early April 2020,Ford’s luxury brand Lincoln Motors canceled plans to make an all new EV on Rivian’s platform. It maintained the partnership was still strong, noting that they were working on “an alternative vehicle.”</p>\n<p>In the rush to pair up and give investors some hope&nbsp;in a cloak-and-dagger string of events, the Ford and Rivian decision, in retrospect, looks like it was just aesthetically pleasing. By the time Ford put in the half-million dollars, Rivian had already&nbsp;raised over $1.5 billion and was valued at close to $7 billion.</p>\n<p>In a way, it’s a sign of how both companies underestimated themselves —&nbsp;perhaps&nbsp;we’re still in for all sorts of great electric trucks and SUVs? Ford’s current CEO Jim Farley said this month his firm&nbsp;plans to double its EV production capacity. But the reality is, we’ll need to start seeing more of&nbsp;them first. In addition, there has to be further discussion and disclosure around what didn’t work for the two parties — because it sounded like it should have been straightforward. That would do the vibrant electric vehicle conversation a big favor.</p>\n<p>Many EV manufacturers are contracting out production and have often struggled to get it up and running (including Tesla in the early days). What issues are they running into? Is this a tech — hardware or software — issue or just philosophical? What seems like a good, synergistic partnership or tie-up may need a more considered look.</p>\n<p>For investors, that’s a warning, especially as the rush to go electric and a slew of new technologies mushroom across the electric vehicle value chain. Photographer: Bing Guan/Bloomberg\nBreakups are tough — even amicable ones. But a reassessment usually lays bare the issues that inform the future. So it’s worth wondering about the relationship between the century-old Ford Motor Co. and recently-floated electric vehicle company Rivian Automotive Inc.\nIt was meant to work — on paper. A large, traditional manufacturer ties up with a new startup that boasts all the right technology and specs, to make an electric version of an American favorite — the SUV. They looked like the perfect couple. This month, though,the companies abandoned plans to jointly develop an EV.\nIt’s a shame. Investors loved it. For Ford, it was a big, bold bet on the future at a time when it didn’t know much better and skittishness around the incessant rise of EV-maker Tesla Inc. made traditional carmakers splash out. They took big stakes in various futuristic technologies or forged partnerships that aligned them with the next-generation of vehicles and the technology that would power them. For Rivian, a hot startup with all the ideas à la mode around sustainability and greener vehicles, the partnership with a manufacturing giant would ensure that production issues didn’t impede its rise.\nRivian went public on Nov. 10 in one of the biggest offerings ever. The value of Ford’s stake stands at around $12 billion. Just 10 days later, they called off jointly making an electric vehicle — mutually, they say. Ford still holds its 12%. Both companies seem to have come out fine, in theory. A subsidiary of the Detroit giant has a supply agreement with the EV-maker.\nBut the making-a-car bit was the premise of the relationship. So what about those lofty goals set at the time of the initial investment led to it falling apart? In April 2019, after the announcement, when Ford’s then-Chief Executive Officer James Hackett was asked by an analyst how much his company thought it could save from its partnership versus “the $1 billion to $2 billion needed to bring a new vehicle to market,” he said: “We see significant opportunity” in terms of cost and speed to market, noting that the latter was important.\nHe went on to say that the skateboard platform, Rivian’s chassis that packages together the systems, motor, batteries and other controls, had a lot of capability they could leverage. Rivian founder R.J. Scaringe noted that just as important as its 100,000 electric van-Amazon.com Inc. relationship was bringing in a partner “that has manufacturing expertise, supply chain expertise and the ability to actually use our skateboard.” They didn’t get into details but investors liked the idea.\nJust over two years later, the reality couldn’t be further from those optimistic statements. Ford is coming out with its own vehicles, as is Rivian, while it scouts out manufacturing plants in Georgia.\nPerhaps they just couldn’t see eye-to-eye on technology and manufacturing, and never would — their foundations are so different. Within a year of the tie-up, in early April 2020,Ford’s luxury brand Lincoln Motors canceled plans to make an all new EV on Rivian’s platform. It maintained the partnership was still strong, noting that they were working on “an alternative vehicle.”\nIn the rush to pair up and give investors some hope in a cloak-and-dagger string of events, the Ford and Rivian decision, in retrospect, looks like it was just aesthetically pleasing. By the time Ford put in the half-million dollars, Rivian had already raised over $1.5 billion and was valued at close to $7 billion.\nIn a way, it’s a sign of how both companies underestimated themselves — perhaps we’re still in for all sorts of great electric trucks and SUVs? Ford’s current CEO Jim Farley said this month his firm plans to double its EV production capacity. But the reality is, we’ll need to start seeing more of them first. In addition, there has to be further discussion and disclosure around what didn’t work for the two parties — because it sounded like it should have been straightforward. That would do the vibrant electric vehicle conversation a big favor.\nMany EV manufacturers are contracting out production and have often struggled to get it up and running (including Tesla in the early days). What issues are they running into? Is this a tech — hardware or software — issue or just philosophical? What seems like a good, synergistic partnership or tie-up may need a more considered look.\nFor investors, that’s a warning, especially as the rush to go electric and a slew of new technologies mushroom across the electric vehicle value chain. A former Ford executive once told Rivian’s Scaringe, “Just because you got engaged to someone doesn’t mean you need to marry them.” In fact, you don’t even have to. That’s worth bearing in Anything Musk does to make buying electrics easier is good for Tesla. Besides, Tesla could make a lot of money by opening its network. Although Tesla didn’t respond to a question about potential pricing, charging won’t be free, and refusing to let others use the system would be like a gas station only servicing Fords. It's included in the company's Activision segment, which reached a record 150 million monthly active users (MAUs) in the first quarter.&nbsp;With seven other major franchises under its umbrella, Activision Blizzard sees an opportunity to improve those titles to more than double its MAUs to 1 billion.</p>\n<p>Making big-budget video game titles does require investing in thousands of employees and can involve significant marketing expenses, but many other aspects of production are not as capital intensive when compared to other industries. This allows top game companies that can sell millions of copies of new releases to produce robust amounts of free cash flow. Over the past four quarters, Activision Blizzard generated $2.8 billion in free cash flow on $8.5 billion in revenue.</p>\n<p>It pays out less than a fifth of that free cash flow in dividends, bringing the current dividend yield to 0.52%. There's clearly potential for Activision to safely double or triple that yield by increasing the payout ratio over time.</p>\n<p>Activision Blizzard owns several franchises that each have a built-in base of millions of fans, including <i>World of Warcraft</i>, <i>Diablo</i>, and <i>Overwatch</i>. The company is well stocked with cash, with $9.3 billion on the balance sheet,&nbsp;which should provide plenty of capital to continue reinvesting for growth.</p>\n<h2>2. Electronic Arts</h2>\n<p>Electronic Arts is known for its EA Sports titles, most notably <i>Madden</i> and <i>FIFA</i>. EA added 42 million new players to its network during the pandemic. It&nbsp;has a total of 230 million players and viewers, but management is targeting 500 million over the next five years.</p>\n<p>Most importantly, EA has demonstrated the ability to bring out new hits. The free-to-play shooter <i>Apex Legends</i> launched in 2019&nbsp;and recently surpassed $1 billion in bookings.&nbsp;EA also revealed plans earlier this year to relaunch its previous <i>NCAA Football</i> franchise under the new title <i>EA Sports College Football</i>, which should be released within the next few years.</p>\n<p>EA's success in growing its sports business in recent years has left it with lots of cash to reinvest. It entered fiscal 2022 with $6.3 billion of cash and investments and has already put that to work.&nbsp;So far this year, EA has spent a combined $4.7 billion to buy Glu Mobile, Codemasters, and Playdemic.&nbsp;These studios bring their own game development prowess and popular titles to accelerate EA's&nbsp;expansion into mobile.</p>\n<p>In fiscal 2021, EA's free cash flow came to $1.8 billion on $5.6 billion of revenue. EA started paying a dividend within the last year,&nbsp;which signals management's confidence in its growth strategy. The quarterly dividend amounts to $0.17 per share, bringing the current dividend yield to 0.48%.&nbsp;The company's growing sports lineup and willingness to return capital to shareholders makes it a top video game stock to consider buying.</p>\n<h2>3. Tencent</h2>\n<p>Tencent is the largest video game company in the world by revenue and also operates the popular WeChat social media platform in China.&nbsp;It owns Riot Games,&nbsp;the operator of one of the top esports titles in the world in <i>League of Legends</i>. It also has ownership stakes in several other companies, including Epic Games and Activision Blizzard.</p>\n<p>Gaming makes up 29% of its annual revenue, with online advertising, fintech, and business services composing most of the balance. But gaming is Tencent's largest business segment. It's the diversity of revenue streams across fast-growing markets, including gaming and cloud services, that make it a stock worth keeping on your radar.</p>\n<p>Over the last four quarters, Tencent generated $18.5 billion in free cash flow.&nbsp;It has $39 billion of dry powder on the balance sheet,&nbsp;in addition to a portfolio of investees that was worth over $200 billion in the first quarter.&nbsp;That's a lot of firepower.</p>\n<p>Tencent compares the current state of the video game industry to the movie business in the 1930s,&nbsp;and it's investing to maintain its leadership status. Review your risk tolerances and asset allocation model</h2>\n<p>When you invest, you should get rewarded for holding risky investments like stocks. That reward often comes in the form of earning a higher-than-average rate of return. But you should also understand that the riskier your holdings, the higher the extremes on that rate in both good years and bad years.</p>\n<p>The table below, compiled by Vanguard, shows average annual returns between 1926 and 2000 among index funds using the asset allocation listed. It also shows the best one-year return rate for that model and the worst one-year return rate for the various asset allocation models. Note too that the number of years where a loss was reported increases as the allocation goes more toward 100% stocks.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8e70af3c789c62b5afab01a3b7ad6e32\" tg-width=\"1149\" tg-height=\"460\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Data source: Vanguard Group.</span></p>\n<p>Part of assessing your risk tolerances involves gauging your comfort level. You should examine how you feel about volatility but also make sure you can withstand all of the return rate scenarios that a particular asset class provides.</p>\n<p>So if losing 43% of your wealth in a single year terrifies you, a portfolio made up of 100% stocks probably isn't a good fit. And a model with a slightly lower average rate of return but lower potential losses will probably make you more comfortable.</p>\n<h2>2. Rebalance your portfolio</h2>\n<p>As the stock market does well or badly, your asset allocation model could shift over time. This could result in you being either too aggressive or conservative compared to the model you chose. As an example, let's say we have $100,000 invested with 70% stocks and 30% bonds at the start of 2008. That year was not a good one for stocks (darn you, Great Recession!), and the $70,000 wound up as $44,100 by the end of the year. Bonds did better, gaining a little over 5% and turning $30,000 into $31,572. So at the start of 2009, an unchanged portfolio would be 58% stocks and 42% bonds.</p>\n<p>In 2009, stocks began their recovery from the Great Recession and did well. If you left your 2008 asset allocations alone (58% stocks/42% bonds), you would have seen a 17.87% return in 2009. That's a decent return. But if you adjusted your portfolio allocation back to 70% stocks/30% bonds, your return in 2009 would have been more like 20.35%. Using our hypothetical numbers, not rebalancing costs the hypothetical investor $1,877 in potential returns just in 2009.</p>\n<p>Because the stock market has done so well over the last 13 years, your portfolio may have experienced the opposite situation from our scenario above. Now instead of your allocations becoming less risky, they could've become riskier (i.e. more invested in stocks). A rebalancing may be overdue.</p>\n<p>Rebalancing basically means selling a portion of your stocks and buying bonds when the stock market does well. And you will sell bonds and buy stocks when stocks have had an off-year. Most investment advisors suggest doing this once a year, but if there is a year with a lot of volatility, you could end up doing it more often. The goal is to get your allocations back in line with your risk tolerance.</p>\n<h2>3. Revisit stock market crashes of the past</h2>\n<p>Even though stock market crashes will happen, they don't happen often. Technically one happens when there is a loss of 10% or more in a stock market index in a short period of time. And since 1929, that has only happened five times.</p>\n<p>But we don't know when the next one could happen. It could be tomorrow, next week, next month, or next year. And there is no exact way of telling how many years you'll have between crashes. For example, after 1929, the next crash didn't come until 1987. But a crash happened in 2007, roughly six years after the dot-com crash ended in 2000. The stock market had mostly positive growth following the 2007-2009 Great Recession until 2020's pandemic-induced crash.</p>\n<p>What you can take from this information is that even though you'll probably endure at least one crash in your lifetime, you probably won't experience many. And if history repeats itself, you will probably get many more years of positive growth than negative.</p>\n<h2>4. Get a long-term investing perspective</h2>\n<p>Even knowing that crashes are relatively rare, you still need to answer some questions about how you are investing. What is the money for? Are you saving for a goal like your retirement that's 20 years or more out? And if so, how much of an impact will a stock market crash now have on you meeting your goal?</p>\n<p>Say, for instance, you lose 20% of your portfolio because of a crash but you don't need the money for 25 years. You'll have plenty of time to recover those lost funds. That would suggest you can be more aggressive with your asset allocation. But what if you'll need your money sooner? That's when you should rethink an aggressive asset allocation model. If you don't have enough time, you risk having to sell your stocks before they've recovered from a crash. Money that is needed over the next year or two should be kept out of the stock market completely.</p>\n<h2>Investor takeaway</h2>\n<p>Short-term losses are a part of the investing process and often aren't worth avoiding. And while no one can predict exactly when one will happen, you can rest assured that they do occur and they can't be avoided.\nThis very real potential investing threat could mean huge losses and a major hit to your hard-earned portfolio. But know that there are at least four ways to mitigate the situation and prepare for the eventuality and perhaps calm your fears and better manage your portfolio.\nImage source: Getty Images.\n1. Review your risk tolerances and asset allocation model\nWhen you invest, you should get rewarded for holding risky investments like stocks. That reward often comes in the form of earning a higher-than-average rate of return. But you should also understand that the riskier your holdings, the higher the extremes on that rate in both good years and bad years.\nThe table below, compiled by Vanguard, shows average annual returns between 1926 and 2000 among index funds using the asset allocation listed. It also shows the best one-year return rate for that model and the worst one-year return rate for the various asset allocation models. Note too that the number of years where a loss was reported increases as the allocation goes more toward 100% stocks.\nData source: Vanguard Group.\nPart of assessing your risk tolerances involves gauging your comfort level. You should examine how you feel about volatility but also make sure you can withstand all of the return rate scenarios that a particular asset class provides.\nSo if losing 43% of your wealth in a single year terrifies you, a portfolio made up of 100% stocks probably isn't a good fit. And a model with a slightly lower average rate of return but lower potential losses will probably make you more comfortable.\n2. Rebalance your portfolio\nAs the stock market does well or badly, your asset allocation model could shift over time. This could result in you being either too aggressive or conservative compared to the model you chose. As an example, let's say we have $100,000 invested with 70% stocks and 30% bonds at the start of 2008. That year was not a good one for stocks (darn you, Great Recession!), and the $70,000 wound up as $44,100 by the end of the year. Bonds did better, gaining a little over 5% and turning $30,000 into $31,572. So at the start of 2009, an unchanged portfolio would be 58% stocks and 42% bonds.\nIn 2009, stocks began their recovery from the Great Recession and did well. If you left your 2008 asset allocations alone (58% stocks/42% bonds), you would have seen a 17.87% return in 2009. That's a decent return. But if you adjusted your portfolio allocation back to 70% stocks/30% bonds, your return in 2009 would have been more like 20.35%. Using our hypothetical numbers, not rebalancing costs the hypothetical investor $1,877 in potential returns just in 2009.\nBecause the stock market has done so well over the last 13 years, your portfolio may have experienced the opposite situation from our scenario above. Now instead of your allocations becoming less risky, they could've become riskier (i.e. more invested in stocks). A rebalancing may be overdue.\nRebalancing basically means selling a portion of your stocks and buying bonds when the stock market does well. And you will sell bonds and buy stocks when stocks have had an off-year. Most investment advisors suggest doing this once a year, but if there is a year with a lot of volatility, you could end up doing it more often. The goal is to get your allocations back in line with your risk tolerance.\n3. Revisit stock market crashes of the past\nEven though stock market crashes will happen, they don't happen often. Technically one happens when there is a loss of 10% or more in a stock market index in a short period of time. And since 1929, that has only happened five times.\nBut we don't know when the next one could happen. It could be tomorrow, next week, next month, or next year. And there is no exact way of telling how many years you'll have between crashes. For example, after 1929, the next crash didn't come until 1987. But a crash happened in 2007, roughly six years after the dot-com crash ended in 2000. The stock market had mostly positive growth following the 2007-2009 Great Recession until 2020's pandemic-induced crash.\nWhat you can take from this information is that even though you'll probably endure at least one crash in your lifetime, you probably won't experience many. And if history repeats itself, you will probably get many more years of positive growth than negative.\n4. Get a long-term investing perspective\nEven knowing that crashes are relatively rare, you still need to answer some questions about how you are investing. What is the money for? Are you saving for a goal like your retirement that's 20 years or more out? And if so, how much of an impact will a stock market crash now have on you meeting your goal?\nSay, for instance, you lose 20% of your portfolio because of a crash but you don't need the money for 25 years. You'll have plenty of time to recover those lost funds. That would suggest you can be more aggressive with your asset allocation. But what if you'll need your money sooner? That's when you should rethink an aggressive asset allocation model. If you don't have enough time, you risk having to sell your stocks before they've recovered from a crash. Money that is needed over the next year or two should be kept out of the stock market completely.\nInvestor takeaway\nShort-term losses are a part of the investing process and often aren't worth avoiding. Six have Nobel Prizes in Economics: Harry Markowitz, the founder of Modern Portfolio Theory, the basis of the modern investment portfolio; his protégé William Sharpe, creator of the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) and the beta risk measure that changed how we think about risk and reward in the financial markets; Eugene Fama, who developed the Efficient Market Hypothesis; Myron Scholes and Robert Merton, two of the co-creators of the Black-Scholes/Merton option pricing model; and Robert Shiller, the behavioral economist whose work challenged the notion of market efficiency.</p>\n<p>The other four are portfolio managers, investors and bestselling authors who have sold millions of investment books, including The Vanguard Group’s founder Jack Bogle; the “Bond Guru,” Marty Leibowitz; the “Wisest Man on Wall Street” and Greenwich Associates founder Charles Ellis; and the “Wizard of Wharton,” Jeremy Siegel.</p>\n<p>It’s no surprise that there isn’t consensus among their suggestions, given their varied backgrounds and interests. The different viewpoints of these financial luminaries illustrate the complexity of portfolio management—one size clearly doesn’t fit all.</p>\n<p>Think of the Perfect Portfolios of our experts as building blocks for your own Perfect Portfolio, collectively capable of accommodating the goals and constraints of all investors, if used in the right combination.</p>\n<p>Markowitz suggests that first and foremost, you should diversify. Focus only on portfolios of securities, and in particular, those that have the highest level of expected returns for a given level of risk, Markowitz’s famous efficient frontier. The same concept applies across asset classes like bonds, real estate and commodities. The key for the investor is to find securities and asset classes with low correlations to each other, so that movements in one are not necessarily reflected in the others.</p>\n<p>Sharpe’s Perfect Portfolio is just what his famous Capital Asset Pricing Model suggests: investing in the market as a whole. Sharpe recommends a U.S. total stock market fund, a non-U.S. total stock market fund, a U.S. total bond market fund, and a non-U.S. total bond market fund.</p>\n<p>Fama and his collaborator Ken French created a model that starts with Sharpe’s CAPM and augments it with two other factors. One captures the difference in returns between value and growth stocks, while the other captures the difference between stocks in companies with small and large market capitalizations. Fama suggests tilting your diversified portfolio toward value stocks and small-cap stocks, both of which tend to do well over time.</p>\n<p>As the creator of the first index mutual fund, Bogle’s portfolio was all about stock and bond index funds, such as Vanguard’s ETF that tracks the S&amp;P 500 index SPX, +0.60%. His mantra was to lower your costs through index funds and not take actions that might destroy value: “Don’t do something, just stand there!”</p>\n<p>For Scholes, the Perfect Portfolio is about risk management. Your investment success will depend most on avoiding the downside “tail risks,” rare but severe stock market downturns such as the financial crisis of 2007–2009 or the COVID-19 pandemic, while capitalizing on the positive “tail gains.”</p>\n<p>Pay attention to what the derivatives markets such as the VIX volatility index VIX, -1.39% are telling you. For example, when the VIX is at a level below its historical average, you may feel more comfortable investing a greater proportion of your assets in risky stocks.</p>\n<p>For Merton, ultimately, the Perfect Portfolio should be your very own risk-free asset, like the inflation-protected government bond TIPS. For your retirement goal, ideally you would take your savings at retirement, and buy an annuity that would provide a lifetime income to meet your anticipated needs.</p>\n<p>Leibowitz’s Perfect Portfolio is about the amount of risk you can personally bear. Be prepared to try to make some tough judgment calls, and consider all of your circumstances, including potential life events, current taxes and estate taxes. In addition to equities, you should include bonds to reduce its overall volatility. Have a contingency plan to deal with serious adverse events.</p>\n<p>For Shiller, your Perfect Portfolio should be widely diversified, not only across major asset classes, but internationally as well. Place a heavier than typical weight in stocks around the world, where Shiller’s CAPE ratios—that is, cyclically adjusted price-to-earnings ratios—are relatively low.</p>\n<p>For Ellis, one of the original advocates of passive investing, your Perfect Portfolio should of course include index funds, especially if you want to have a good chance of being in the top 20% of funds over the next 20 years. You should invest in bond index funds and low-cost international index funds, such as the MSCI EAFE (Europe, Australasia, and Far East) index. Pay attention to your taxes.</p>\n<p>And Siegel encourages you to have reasonable expectations in line with financial history, no surprise for the author of the bestselling “Stocks for the Long Run”. The longer your investment horizon, the greater proportion of your Perfect Portfolio should be in stocks. Consider developing-country stocks. That gives the companies a head start. BioNTech is by far the smallest of the companies with COVID-19 vaccines already on the market, which makes its shares more likely to jump higher on a positive catalyst. It's also easily the cheapest of these vaccine stocks, based on forward earnings multiples.</p>\n<p>What if there isn't an imminent market crash? BioNTech is still set to rake in billions of dollars with sales of its COVID-19 vaccine. The company will almost certainly use its growing cash stockpile to invest in expanding its pipeline. The company is also undertaking a major initiative to \"establish itself as a health destination.\" While Dollar General didn't provide many details on exactly what its plans are, moving more into healthcare sounds like a smart move to me.</p>\n<h3>Viatris</h3>\n<p>There are at least two reasons why a given stock might hold up well during a big market sell-off. One is that its underlying business isn't impacted much by the reason behind the broader plunge. Another is that the stock is so cheap that investors scoop up shares if it falls much below its existing price. My take is that&nbsp;<b>Viatris</b> (NASDAQ:VTRS) qualifies on both of these criteria.</p>\n<p>Viatris specializes in biosimilars and generic drugs. Patients need these drugs, regardless of what the stock market does. The drugs are also less expensive than branded prescription drugs.</p>\n<p>The stock is irrefutably dirt cheap. Viatris' shares trade at a little over four times expected earnings. It's unlikely that the stock is going to move much lower because it would simply be too much of a steal for investors to ignore.</p>\n<p>Granted, Viatris probably won't keep up with the overall stock market's performance if the current uptrend continues. However, the company's dividend is attractive.
